| Posted: 09 Sep 2019 03:52 AM PDT 'IT Chapter Two' Filmmakers Break Down The Ritual of Chüd & Adapting Stephen King's Cosmic Mythology - Collider.com Pennywise is back and more vicious than ever before in IT Chapter Two, director Andy Muschietti's followup to his record-smashing 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's IT. Set up 27 years after the events of the first film, Chapter Two picks up with the adult Losers club — James McAvoy's Bill Denbrough, Jessica Chastain's Beverly Marsh, Bill Hader's Richie Tozier, Jay Ryan's Ben Hanscom, James Ransone's Eddie Kaspbrak, Isaiah Mustafah's Mike Hanlon and Andy Bean's Stanley Uris — when the child-eating creature known as It returns from slumber with a rather literal vengeance. Adapting King's sprawling horror classic was never going to be an easy task, but the second half, in particular, has always been a tricky beast. Where the childhood adventures of the Losers club offered a tight coming-of-age narrative to tackle in the first film, the epic finale of their adult journey includes mind-bending rituals, astral journeys into cosmic voids, and a giant god-like turtle that threw up the known world in a fit of indigestion. It's almost too much to fully wrap your head around when you read the book, and certainly not the kind of storytelling that easily translates to the screen.  Image via Warner Bros. / New Line Which means that when it came time to figure out how to reinvent King's cosmic mythology for IT Chapter Two, the filmmakers had to find a way to make impossible ideas cinematic. And that meant a lot of changes to the source material. Muschietti explained,
In King's novel, the Ritual of Chüd involves two parties metaphorically/spiritually biting down on each other's tongues and telling jokes until one party, the losing party, laughs. It's a psychic battle of wits, waged with the power of belief in the vast expanse of the Macroverse. In the book, it happens twice. First, Bill enacts the ritual as a child, when he communes with the Turtle god Maturin while floating through the Macroverse. Stick with me here. Maturin is sort-of an anti-Pennywise; a more-or-less benevolent Lovecraftian god-creature, who accidentally created our universe by throwing up. He's also a power player in King's Dark Tower series but we do not have time for all that here. While Maturin usually keeps out of human affairs, he occasionally nudges people in the right direction, as he does with young Bill in King's novel, pushing the boy towards the Ritual of Chüd and his battle against It. In the movies, things are quite different. The Ritual of Chüd is never mentioned in the first film (though Muschietti noted he wanted too, but could never find the right spot for it) and the ritual doesn't play a part in the Losers' battle against Pennywise, though there a few easter egg references to the Turtle throughout the film. (Most notably when the kids go for a swim in the quarry.) In IT Chapter Two, however, The Ritual of Chüd becomes a key anchor to the film's structure, with some massive revisions from the ritual in the book.  Image via Warner Bros. As the only Loser who stays in Derry, Mike bears the memory of Pennywise alone and spend his years researching a way to kill him, which leads him to a Native tribe just outside of Derry (and thus, just outside of Its reach,) who teach him about the ritual. Mike passes his knowledge on to Bill when he drugs him with the Maturin root (a nice Easter egg for book fans) and shows him the visions of the ritual, which involves hunting down totems of their forgotten memories and sacrificing them in a ritual to trap It in an ancient receptacle. Of course, what the Losers quickly learn is that the ritual doesn't work at all. Mike hid a key bit of information from them — the last people who tried it were all slaughtered by It. As Muschietti explains, Mike saw it as a way of unifying their belief.

| Rose McGowan Wants Lisa Bloom Disbarred - Variety Posted: 09 Sep 2019 03:52 AM PDT Rose McGowan Wants Lisa Bloom Disbarred - Variety "She Said," Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey's account of reporting their New York Times investigation of Harvey Weinstein that helped reignite the #MeToo movement, will be published on Tuesday — but a story about the book in the New York Times on Sunday has already set off a firestorm on the internet. In an interview with Variety, Rose McGowan said that the revelations about her from the news story were "deeply wounding." The story, by Alexandra Alter, revealed previously unreported details about how the orginal Weinstein investigation was sourced, and included the duplicitous ways the famous executive and his representatives tried to kill it. Some of the most shocking instances involve a plan to smear McGowan, who has alleged that Weinstein raped her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, and who received a $100,000 settlement from him afterward. McGowan, an activist and firebrand, was one of Weinstein's first public accusers. Related "What these people have done to my standing in the world has been systematic — it's been evil," McGowan said. "It's one of the worst cases of gaslighting I've ever heard, and it's starring me." In "She Said," which Variety has obtained, lawyers Lisa Bloom and David Boies emerge as ruthless advocates on behalf of Weinstein. Kantor and Twohey include a damning memo from Bloom to Weinstein from December 2016 that is a six-point plan for him to fight McGowan, and also to repair his reputation. Toward the end of the memo, Bloom wrote, "A reminder: would you please connect me with David Boies so that I can get retained?" McGowan was the first person Kantor interviewed off the record, as is revealed in the book. Weinstein knew McGowan was writing a memoir, and was positive she was going to expose him, which is why Bloom focused on undermining the actor. Alter's story quotes from Bloom's memo: "I feel equipped to help you against the Roses of the world, because I have represented so many of them." Bloom also adds: "We can place an article re her becoming increasingly unglued, so that when someone Googles her this is what pops up and she's discredited." Bloom, the daughter of feminist attorney Gloria Allred, had made a name for herself before representing Weinstein as a victim's right's advocate. But in Susan Faludi's New York Times review of "She Said," also published on Sunday, she wrote, "Maybe the most appalling figure in this constellation of collaborators and enablers is Lisa Bloom, Allred's daughter." "Her email is staggering. Staggering!" McGowan said. "This woman should never work again." "Lisa Bloom should be disbarred. So should David Boies," McGowan added. Bloom and a representative for Boies did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment. Bloom did tweet in response to the story, and apologized: "To those who missed my 2017 apology, and especially to the women: I am sorry." McGowan now lives in London, and feels she is still blacklisted in Hollywood — even though it was the disgraced Weinstein who instigated the blacklist. She has been working on her "Planet 9" art/music project, and recently performed at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. She looks forward to the publication of "She Said." "I hope this book will go a long way to exonerating me and the other victims who've dealt with slander and mental assault for years now," McGowan said. "As for me, in Hollywood I suppose I'll continue not working. It doesn't make any sense, and it's really hurtful. "But in my own life, I'm incredibly happy now and feeling very balanced. NEWS Jesy Nelson attempted suicide after being targeted by online trolls. The Little Mix star opened up about her experience in a new BBC Three documentary called Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out. As fans will recall, Nelson auditioned for The X Factor in 2011. While she auditioned as a solo artist, she was eventually put into a girl group called Little Mix with Jade Thirlwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards. During one of the episodes, the band sang a cover of Nicki Minaj's hit "Super Bass." They then gathered backstage to watch their performance on YouTube. "I was very naive," she told The Guardian in an interview published Sunday. "I thought it would be people giving their opinion on our performance. But nearly every comment was about the way I looked: 'She's a fat ugly rat'; 'How has she got in this girl group?'; 'How is the fat one in this?'" Soon, Nelson became "obsessed" with reading people's comments. "I had a routine of waking up, going on Twitter, searching for the worst things I could about myself. I'd type in the search bar: 'Jesy fat', or 'Jesy ugly', and see what would come up," she told the newspaper. "Sometimes I didn't even need to do that, I'd just write 'Jesy' and then I'd see all the horrible things. Everyone told me to ignore it–but it was like an addiction." Little Mix ended up winning the competition. While many would think this would be one of the happiest moments in Nelson's life, this wasn't the case. According to the newspaper, the artist received a Facebook message from a stranger just hours after the win that read, "You are the ugliest thing I've seen in my life, you do not deserve to be in this girl band. You deserve to die.'" As Little Mix's popularity increased, so did the online criticism. According to The Guardian, Nelson became depressed; however, she refused antidepressants, and therapy wasn't working. She also started to "starve" herself. In 2013, the band returned to The X Factor as guest stars. Nelson said she had lost weight and hoped the bullying would stop. However, it didn't and Nelson became "severely depressed." "The only way I can describe the pain is like constantly being heartbroken," she said in the documentary, per the BBC. "I remember going to the kitchen and I just took as many tablets as I could. Then my ex, who was with me at the time, he woke up and was like, 'Why are you crying?' I kept saying, 'I just want to die.'" According to the BBC, Nelson was then taken to the hospital. Per the news outlet, she wasn't left with any complications following the suicide attempt. Now, Nelson is hoping her story will help others. "I think this is important now because social media is such a huge part of everyone's lives," she said in a trailer for the documentary. "You can say one nasty comment and think they're not going to see it or it doesn't mean anything to you but it does. It affects people massively, and I'm meeting a lot of people along the way who also suffered from online trolling. They're telling their story of how it's affected them." I" really am just trying to figure out my own life at the moment," Khloe admits. "I have so many raw emotions toward Tristan. I'm just healing and processing and going through the motions, I guess." Tristan is not giving up on trying to win Khloe back with flowers and a flood of calls and texts, but luckily, she sees right through it. "Tristan thinks people are disposable," Khloe tells her sisters. "Like if he sends me enough flowers or text messages, I'm going to come around." At this point, Khloe had not seen Tristan in person since his night with Jordyn. "I know I'll get to that place," she says. "Right now, it's really challenging and tough for me. My feelings are super raw and I'm hurt and humiliated by what he did to me." Of course, with the pair's daughter, True Thompson's, first birthday approaching, Khloe is put in a tough spot: Should she invite Tristan or not? "It's too soon," she tells Kris Jenner. "[He doesn't] deserve to be there. But is that unfair to True? Yes." Khloe knows she could talk to Tristan before the party, so things are less awkward than them seeing each other for the first time at the event, but she's admittedly not ready for that because she knows it will end in a "screaming match." However, she has an alternative plan — speaking with him over the phone with a therapist present. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the result she was hoping for. "We did a therapy session to figure out how to co-parent True, but I wish I didn't," Khloe says. "It was a really hard time for me. I'm fighting with myself now…did I make the right choice by including Tristan in True's birthday?" Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian even consider uninviting the basketball star, but Kris urges Khloe to think things through. "I'm not going to tell you what to do with Tristan because those feelings are really raw," she reveals. "'I'm just asking you to be a little easier." Khloe's inner drama continues when Kim Kardashian shows up with a different view of the situation. "Do you really think that's a good idea? "she asks. "I just feel like it's going to be such a spectacle that it's the first time you guys are seeing each other." This pisses Khloe off and builds up her anxiety even more. "I already made the decision that I want True's dad at her birthday," she tells Kim. "I want this s** behind me so it's sooner that we can move on with my life." Eventually, Khloe storms out. On the morning of the party, though, she reveals that she decided to have Tristan over the night before so things would be slightly less awkward at the party. "It was fine," she tells her assistant. "At first he texted saying I'm here, and I brought True to the door to answer and she was so excited and it was really cute. Then literally he was just kind of lingering so I'm like…are you going to put her to sleep tonight? [But he stayed] with intention to see me. He's like…do you want to grab a glass of wine? I'm like…it must say dumb f***ing w**ore on my forehead. And then he's like…can I have a hug, so I one-arm hugged him, but that's not nice enough. He tried to kiss me. I'm like…that's the problem with you. You can't just take what you get. The next morning he's like, thank you for letting me see True. She looked great and you looked even better." Finally, it's time for the party, and things are definitely awkward when Tristan walks in. Then, he and Khloe take a photo with True in front of everyone and all eyes are on them. The real drama unfolds, though, when Kim spots Kanye West talking to Tristan and approaches him to ask what they were chatting about. Kanye explains that Tristan didn't like the fact that they used 'Ye's song in a KUWTK teaser from the previous season, where the footage was showing the cheating scandal unfold. "He felt like we were using my music to reinforce his narrative," Kanye explains. Seeing all of this back and forth worries Khloe. "I'm just trying to be mature and put my s*** to the side," she says. "I don't need this." She lets Kim know that she's NOT happy that she's bringing even more drama to the event, and eventually storms off. "I know with so many family members, everyone thinks they're doing the right thing and everyone's intention is to help and be protective," Khloe says in her confessional. "But at Trues' birthday party, it's not the right timing."
