Sprint Swaps Flash Market Doubts Over Fate of T-Mobile Tie-Up - Yahoo Finance Posted: 14 Jan 2020 10:13 PM PST (Bloomberg) -- Sprint Corp. bondholders have long bet that the wireless company's acquisition by T-Mobile US Inc. will be allowed to go through, but by at least one measure, they're growing more worried about the deal's potential to get done. The cost to protect Sprint's debt against default for five years has nearly doubled since September to around 333 basis points, according to ICE Data Services. Credit traders have been digesting court testimony from a takeover challenge brought by Democratic attorneys general. The attorneys, who hail from 13 states and the District of Columbia, say the merger could lead to higher prices and poorer service for consumers. Closing arguments in the case are scheduled for Wednesday. A victory for Sprint could be a boon to bondholders, potentially sending risk premiums on the debt tumbling as much as 200 basis points, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Stephen Flynn wrote in a note. But if the deal falls apart, the consequences for Sprint could be dire. Flynn said in a separate note Tuesday that Sprint could face ratings downgrades and require a liquidity injection from backer SoftBank Group Corp. To some investors, the debt still looks too risky to buy. "What we try to look at is, 'Are we being compensated for the risks?'" said John McClain, a portfolio manager at Diamond Hill Capital Management, which doesn't own Sprint debt. "With Sprint, you absolutely are not." A spokeswoman for Sprint declined to comment. Analysts are split on the potential outcome of the case. Cowen & Co. analyst Paul Gallant put the odds of a ruling favoring the states at 60% in a note earlier this month, while LightShed Partners' Walt Piecyk sees a higher likelihood of a decision tipped toward the companies. The spread between T-Mobile's offer price for Sprint and the trading price rose to around $3.29 a share on Tuesday from a low of 53 cents in May 2018. The higher the gap, the more uncertain the market is of a deal happening. Either outcome would have broad implications for the $1.3 trillion U.S. junk-bond market. With more than $35 billion of long-term debt outstanding, Sprint is the second-largest issuer of speculative-grade notes, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. T-Mobile is seeking a split debt structure for the combined company, with about 55% of the obligations carrying investment-grade ratings. Sprint, which carries single B range ratings from the three major credit ratings companies, has seen its debt surge since it agreed to combine with higher-rated T-Mobile. Its 7.785% bonds due in 2023 change hands for more than 108 cents on the dollar, up from a low of around 60 cents in early 2016. If the deal fails to close, Sprint will be left to contend with some $25 billion of debt that matures in the next five years, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Flynn said in a note that SoftBank may need to invest $3 billion to $5 billion to help the wireless company deal with its upcoming maturities. "If it doesn't go through, Sprint is on its own," said Dave Novosel, a senior bond analyst at Gimme Credit. "At some point over the next year or two years, Sprint is going to need to consider coming to market to refinance some of that debt, which could pressure the market on the whole. --With assistance from Scott Moritz. Posted: 14 Jan 2020 10:11 PM PST Less than two weeks after being arrested on the charge of second-degree murder of her mother, court documents show that actress Mollie Fitzgerald told police she acted in self-defense. According to The Kansas City Star, medical examiners, however, found no signs that her mother was ever in control of the weapon. An overturned chair, a broken lamp and damaged drywall indicated to authorities that there was a struggle, police said. Mollie Fitzgerald, 38, played a small role in "Captain America: The First Avenger" in 2011. She is now accused of stabbing her mother, Patricia Fitzgerald, to death in Olathe, Kansas. 'CAPTAIN AMERICA' ACTRESS CHARGED WITH SECOND-DEGREE MURDER OF MOTHER In the affidavit for the arrest, obtained by The Kansas City Star, Fitzgerald's father told law enforcement that her "aggressive behaviors [had] been escalating." The documents say that Mollie Fitzgerald allegedly called the police on Dec. 20, 2019, to report that she had killed her mother in self-defense. Police arrived at the home and found Patricia Fitzgerald on the floor with a knife in her back, The Kansas City Star reported. Mollie Fitzgerald said that her mother first came at her with a knife, but she took the weapon after hitting her with a vacuum attachment, court records said, according to the outlet. ![]() Mollie Fitzgerald, 38, was arrested on charges of second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of her mother, authorities say. (Johnson County Detention Center) According to the affidavit, "[Mollie Fitzgerald] said her mother just would not stop trying to take the knife to kill her, so she had to kill her mom." Mollie Fitzgerald was treated for minor cuts, and an autopsy revealed that Patricia Fitzgerald suffered from bruising consistent with being choked, as well as other "defensive injuries," the newspaper reported. According to the website IMDb, Mollie Fitzgerald is a movie director and producer, as well as an actress. She worked on mostly low-budget films, including "The Lawful Truth" in 2014 and "The Creeps" in 2017. Warren makes the case that a woman can beat Trump - CNN Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:25 PM PST ![]() Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg insisted that he would be able to overcome his scant support among black voters. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders argued that his embrace of socialism would not be off-putting to a broader electorate. And businessman Tom Steyer said it would not be his wealth that was important to voters, but rather his ability to take on Trump on the issue that matters most to them: the economy. But it was Sen. Elizabeth Warren's answer about she would overcome the skepticism of voters who do not believe a woman can win the presidency that won the night. "Look, this question about whether or not a woman can be president has been raised and it's time for us to attack it head-on," the Massachusetts senator said. "Can a woman beat Donald Trump? Look at the men on this stage. Collectively, they have lost 10 elections," she added. "The only people on this stage who have won every single election that they've been in are the women: Amy and me," she said, referring to the only other woman onstage: Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar. "So true," Klobuchar chimed in from the other side of the stage. The Minnesota senator pointed to her winning record in the Midwest. "I have won every race, every place, every time. I have won in the reddest of districts. I have won in the suburban areas, in the rural areas," she said. The exchange came after Warren had affirmed what four sources told CNN: Sanders told her at that private dinner that a woman could not win. But on Tuesday night, Sanders once again insisted he never made that statement and said he would support whoever ends up being the Democratic nominee. Warren had also noted she was the only person onstage who had beaten an incumbent Republican in the past 30 years. "Just to set the record straight, I defeated an incumbent Republican running for Congress," Sanders said when his turn came. Warren pressed him on when that was and he said 1990. "Wasn't that 30 years ago?" Warren asked after appearing to do the math in her head. "I was the only one who's beaten an incumbent Republican in 30 years." "Well, 30 years ago is 1990, as a matter of fact," Sanders replied. Iran dominates opening stagesThe debate started with the candidates tangling over who was best positioned to keep the country safe as they face voters who are increasingly anxious about another conflict in the Middle East after President Donald Trump ordered the targeted killing of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani. During the first few moments of the debate, Sanders faulted former Vice President Joe Biden for voting in 2002 to authorize the use of force in Iraq while he was a senator for Delaware. Sanders noted that he and Biden listened to the same intelligence from the administration of former President George W. Bush claiming that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, but they voted differently on the Iraq War Resolution. Crosby posts goal, 3 assists in return, Pens rout Wild 7-3 - USA TODAY Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:23 PM PST ![]() PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists in his first game back from abdominal surgery and the Pittsburgh Penguins rolled past Minnesota 7-3 on Tuesday night. Crosby needed less than eight minutes to pick up his first point since before Halloween, assisting on Evgeni Malkin's first goal of the night 7:57 in. Crosby added his sixth goal of the season in the third period when he slipped a backhand past Devan Dubnyk as the Penguins rolled to their fourth straight victory. Malkin finished with two goals and a pretty no-look drop pass to set up Bryan Rust's 19th of the season. Jared McCann scored for the fourth time in five games for Pittsburgh, Dominik Simon added his fifth, and Tristan Jarry stopped 25 shots to improve to 11-0-1 in his last 12 starts against Western Conference opponents. Crosby skated 17:53 after missing 28 games following abdominal surgery and looked just as dangerous as ever as the Penguins pulled within four points of first-place Washington in the Metropolitan Division. Zach Parise scored twice and Marcus Foligno added his ninth for the Wild, who spotted the Penguins a four-goal lead. Dubnyk finished with 22 saves, and the Wild fell to 1-5-1 in their last seven games. BLUE JACKETS 3, BRUINS 0 COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Elvis Merzlikins recorded his second consecutive shutout and Columbus beat Atlantic Division-leading Boston for its fourth win in five games. Alexander Wennberg, Kevin Stenlund and Riley Nash scored for Columbus. Merzlikins won for the sixth time in his last eight starts and turned aside all 34 shots he faced. His five wins since Dec. 31 tie him for the NHL lead with Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy. Boston goaltender Jaroslav Halak entered the game at 1:12 of the first period after Tukka Rask was inadvertently struck in the head by an elbow in the crease. Halak stopped 24 shots in relief as the Bruins lost their second straight and were shut out for the first time this season. SABRES 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Jack Eichel scored the go-ahead goal on an end-to-end rush 7:57 into the third period in Buffalo's win over slumping Vegas. The goal was Eichel's career-high-matching 28th of the season and came in a game in which he added an assist to become Buffalo's first player in 27 years to reach the 60-point mark in 46 or fewer games. Sam Reinhart had a goal and two assists, and Kyle Okposo and Curtis Lazar, with an empty-netter, also scored. Linus Ullmark stopped 23 shots, and the Sabres improved to 4-2 in their past six. Reilly Smith and Tomas Nosek scored for the Golden Knights, who have lost four straight to match their longest streak without a point in their three-year franchise history. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 22 shots. ISLANDERS 8, RED WINGS 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Brock Nelson scored twice and the Islanders routed Detroit. New York scored three times in the first eight minutes. The league-worst Red Wings were out of it early, and Thomas Greiss made 34 saves to back the Islanders. Jordan Eberle, Josh Bailey and Nelson chased Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard with their three early goals. Calvin Pickard relieved and stopped 14 of 19 shots. Anders Lee, Anthony Beauvillier, Noah Dobson and Leo Komarov also scored for the Islanders. Filip Hronek and Givani Smith scored for Detroit. LIGHTNING 4, KINGS 3, SO TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Nikita Kucherov scored late to force overtime and Steven Stamkos delivered the game-deciding goal in a shootout as Tampa Bay rallied to beat Los Angeles. Brayden Point also beat Kings goalie Jonathan Quick in the shootout, helping the Lightning rebound from a 2-1 loss to New Jersey that stopped Tampa Bay's franchise record-tying 10-game winning streak on Sunday. Stamkos and Alex Killorn also scored in regulation for the Lightning, who overcame deficits of 2-0 and 3-2. Kucherov's 18th goal of the season made it 3-3 with 1:15 remaining in the third period. Quick stopped 35 of 38 shots for Los Angeles, which took a 3-2 lead when Dustin Brown scored on the power play at 12:00 of the third. Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy, who blanked the Arizona Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers in his previous two starts, finished with 38 saves. MAPLE LEAFS 7, DEVILS 4 TORONTO (AP) — Auston Matthews had his first hat trick since scoring four times in his NHL debut and Toronto beat New Jersey. John Tavares scored as part of a three-point night for the Leafs and Rasmus Sandin had two assists in his first game since getting called up from the minors to help reinforce the injury-riddled defense corps. William Nylander and Zach Hyman each had a goal and an assist, and Frederik Gauthier had the other goal for Toronto (25-16-6), which entered winless in its previous three games. Mitch Marner chipped in with two assists. Frederik Andersen made 24 saves for the Leafs. Blake Coleman, with his first-career hat trick, and P.K. Subban scored for New Jersey. Will Butcher had three assists. Louis Domingue allowed five goals on 19 shots before getting yanked midway through the second period. Veteran backup Cory Schneider finished with 13 saves. BLACKHAWKS 3, SENATORS 2, OT OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Jonathan Toews scored 42 seconds into overtime and assisted on Chicago's two other goals in a win over Ottawa. Dominik Kubalik added a pair of goals for the Blackhawks. Robin Lehner stopped 20 shots. Connor Brown and Chris Tierney scored first-period goals for the Senators. Rookie goaltender Marcus Hogberg started in net for the third straight game and made 27 saves. JETS 4, CANUCKS 0 WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Kyle Connor scored twice, Connor Hellebuyck made 41 saves in his fourth shutout of the season, and Winnipeg snapped a six-game home losing streak with a win over Vancouver. It was the 18th shutout of Hellebuyck's career and gave him the franchise record for shutouts, surpassing Ondrej Pavelec. Jack Roslovic and Blake Wheeler also had a goal each and Patrik Laine picked up a pair of assists for the Jets, who have won their past 10 games against Vancouver. Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced for the Canucks, who have been shut out three times this season. ___ More AP NHL: https://apnews.com/NHL and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports "Goal" - Google News January 14, 2020 at 08:04PM https://ift.tt/2FSzTq0 Crosby posts goal, 3 assists in return, Pens rout Wild 7-3 - USA TODAY "Goal" - Google News https://ift.tt/35TEe8t Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Microsoft enables native mobile development with Blazor - InfoWorld Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:13 PM PST ![]() Microsoft has rolled out an experimental project to allow developers to build native mobile apps using the Blazor web framework for C# and .NET. The Experimental Mobile Blazor Bindings project enables development of native mobile apps via C# and .NET for Android and iOS, leveraging familiar web programming patterns. The goal of the project is to find out if developers like the option of writing markup and performing data binding for native mobile applications using the Blazor-style programming model with Razor syntax and features. If so, Microsoft may support it in a future version of the Visual Studio IDE. With the mobile Blazor bindings, developers can leverage existing web skills to build native iOS and Android apps powered by .NET. The Blazor programming model and Razor markup syntax can be used to define UI components as well as behaviors of an application. The UI components included are based on Xamarin.Forms native UI controls. Blazor runs on .NET Standard 2.0. To begin working with mobile Blazor bindings, developers must have the .NET Core 3.0 or 3.1 SDK, Visual Studio, or Visual Studio for the Mac. Also needed are ASP.NET web development and mobile development with .NET (Xamarin.Forms) workloads installed. Sample apps are available on GitHub. Templates can be installed by running the following command from a command/shell window:
Developers can create their first project by using the following command: The SLN file must be opened in Visual Studio, with developers marking Android or iOS as the startup project. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren square off over Trump's USMCA trade deal - CNBC Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:55 PM PST ![]() Democratic presidential hopeful Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders speaks during the seventh Democratic primary debate of the 2020 presidential campaign season co-hosted by CNN and the Des Moines Register at the Drake University campus in Des Moines, Iowa on January 14, 2020. Robyn Beck | AFP | Getty Images Progressive Democratic candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders sparred over their trade policy disagreements at the seventh presidential primary debate Tuesday. While most Democrats vying to defeat President Donald Trump in 2020 have criticized his protectionist trade policies and trade war with China, Warren and Sanders have both said they are open to using tariffs in some ways. And while Democrats and Republicans alike have championed the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement, or USMCA, as a beneficial update to the North American Free Trade Agreement, Warren and Sanders have been more critical of it. Still both carved out distinctions between their policies on the debate stage Tuesday night. Warren has said she would vote to approve the USMCA. Sanders, asked about the Trump-brokered deal, said he would refuse to back the trilateral trade deal, despite previously saying it made some "modest improvements." "We can do much better than a Trump-led trade deal," Sanders said, claiming that USMCA will exacerbate job loss through outsourcing. Sanders also noted the lack of support for the deal from environmental organizations. "Every major environmental organization has said no to this new trade agreement because it does not even have the phrase 'climate change' in it." "I will not vote for a trade agreement that does not incorporate very very strong principles to significantly lower fossil fuel emissions in the world," he said. Warren began by touting her populist bona fides, saying she had opposed prior trade deals. "But we have farmers here in Iowa who are hurting," she said, "and they are hurting because of Donald Trump" and his trade wars. The USMCA, she said, "will give some relief" to U.S. farmers and workers: "I believe we accept that relief, we try to help the people who need help, and we get up the next day and fight for a better trade deal." Sanders responded that retooling existing trade deals is no easy task. "I believe if this deal is passed, it will set us back a number of years," he said. Pro-AOC group spent $20,000 on anti-Biden Facebook ads - Quartz Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:25 PM PST ![]() From our ObsessionThe New PropagandaWhat are the new weapons in the arsenal of influence? A dark-money group linked to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has spent about $20,000 on anti-Biden Facebook ads aimed at South Carolina voters. It's one of the first salvos of negative advertising in a primary race that's otherwise remained mostly positive. The group, a 501(c)4 called Organize for Justice, uses a barely month-old Facebook page called "Watercooler Politics." Organize for Justice is a sister organization to Justice Democrats, which is a liberal political action committee closely linked to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; the group even recruited AOC to run for office. "Sometimes the candidate that seems like the safest choice isn't the safest choice." reads the ad on which Organize for Justice has spent the most money, at least $7,500, as of Monday. In close second is an ad on which at least $5,500 has been spent, which reads: "The United States has the largest prison system in the world. As Senator, Joe Biden helped build it." Both ads have been shown about half a million times, if not more, to South Carolina voters since Dec. 19. All of the ads link directly to news articles, sometimes months old, that support the ad's argument. None of them appear to collect contact information or solicit donations—suggesting that the goal of the ads is to change South Carolina voters' minds. South Carolina is the fourth state to vote in the race to decide the Democratic nominee for US president, voting on Feb. 29. The state is seen as a stronghold for Biden—in large part because many of the state's Democratic voters are African-Americans who, polls show, overwhelmingly support Biden. It seems likely that the ads are meant to appeal to African-American voters in particular, based on the the prison-related message and also on an electability argument, factors many political strategists believe resonate with that demographic group. It's not clear how Organize for Justice has used Facebook's powerful targeting tools to seek its voters; Facebook doesn't publish the choices that advertisers make. Waleed Shahid, a spokesman for Organize for Justice said the ads were targeted to South Carolina Democrats generally. "I think Democrats in general care about racial justice and civil rights issues," he said. Other ads that Organize for Justice may have concluded were less successful at getting clicks—and thus, perhaps, changing minds and votes—focused on foreign policy; social security; and Anita Hill. Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee when it harshly questioned Hill over her accusation of sexual harassment against Clarence Thomas, who, at the time in 1991, was being considered for a seat on the Supreme Court." Joe Biden did a disservice to me. A disservice, more importantly, to the public," reads the Anita Hill quote in Organize for Justice's ad. A few ads from Organize for Justice, on which very little money has been spent, criticize Pete Buttigieg and were targeted to Iowa voters. Shahid said the group was still testing its messages in Iowa, but planned to ramp up its ads shortly. In a press release sent after Quartz asked Organize for Justice about the ads, the group said it hoped to spend "at least half a million dollars on paid digital advertisements in the next two months." Justice Democrats has focused on primary challenges against less-liberal Democrats. Encouraging primary challenges against non-white members of Congress has earned Justice Democrats the ire of the Congressional Black Caucus. Jeffrey Chester, director of the Center for Digital Democracy, told Quartz he thinks ads that target voters based on location should not be used. "All candidates should agree that they will not use data-driven ads without full disclosure of the techniques, spending and impact," he wrote in an email. Shahid, from Organize for Justice, said the ads were designed to "educate" voters about Biden and Buttigieg's records. "Joe Biden is still the frontrunner in many national polls. He has a record that I don't think voters have gotten to be as familiar with as they should be." Shahid said the organization was looking into video advertisements on various platforms, potentially including YouTube. Let us know if you know more. This story is from Quartz's investigations team. T-Mobile provides 400 hotspots for Staunton students to get internet access - WHSV Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:13 PM PST ![]() STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) — In Staunton, students without internet at home will soon be able to get free hotspots for the year. Thanks to T-Mobile, students will be able to rent an internet hotspot for free from their school libraries and take it home for a school year. The school's technology division is also helping parents connect by giving about 300 Chromebooks to families who don't have anything at home. "Between the mobile hotspots that we're getting from T-Mobile and giving these devices to families, that, with these two kinds of approaches at the same time, we can completely bridge the digital divide in Staunton City Schools," Superintendent Dr. Garett Smith said. T-Mobile is also giving $26,000 to Staunton City Schools Equity First Fund. The gift is called the T-Mobile Empowered Award, and is valued at about $40,000 to provide the hotspot equipment and internet connectivity to give students a better chance to complete school work with internet access. T-Mobile leased hotspots to the Staunton school district for several years in the past, but the new contribution increases their hotspot inventory by 200 units and made them all free, plus added the ability for students to check one out for an entire school year. "We conducted a recent survey which revealed that approximately 10 percent of SCS families do not have internet connectivity at home," said Tom Lundquist, director of technology for Staunton City Schools. "Our goal is to ensure that every student and parent who needs access to technology receives it, and remove barriers to student success by ensuring each family has the digital tools they need for a modern-day education. We're excited to achieve that goal thanks to the contributions from T-Mobile." Right now, students can check one out for two weeks max, with teacher input and parental approval. The new system is expected to be set up in the coming months. T-Mobile says anonymous donors helped launched the Equity First Fund with $105,000 in contributions late last year. Hollywood actress supports Buttigieg 'because he's a real human' - Washington Examiner Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:11 PM PST ![]() Actress Mandy Moore raved about 2020 presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg and his presidential campaign, saying she thinks he will "get the job done" as president. "He's a veteran, he's brilliant, he's a Rhodes scholar, he speaks seven languages. He's compassionate, he's authentic, he's a real human," the Tangled star said. "I feel like that's a quality that's often overlooked in a presidential candidate. I talked about this on stage, but he's someone who obviously has incredible policy ideas, but they're never ideas that feel unattainable. Feels like — it feels like he's speaking directly to you, and you know he's going to get the job done." Moore, 35, announced last week that she would be joining Buttigieg in Iowa on the campaign trail. The actress said she loves the candidate's "message of unity." "I don't think that anyone can sit this one out. I, again, have been sort of hesitant to speak out politically in the past," she said. "I think we all need to use whatever platform we have to not only educate ourselves about the different candidates that are out there but to get out and vote. I mean, this is, it's too important to stay silent." Buttigieg, 37, is currently polling in fourth place nationally at 7.2%, according to RealClearPolitics. House Democrats provide new evidence of Giuliani's push to meet with Zelensky - CNN Posted: 14 Jan 2020 06:55 PM PST The documents show how the associate, Lev Parnas, sought to set up a meeting between Giuliani and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and connect with members of his government. The records also add more details about the push by Giuliani to seek the ouster of the then-US ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch. The House Intelligence Committee pored through the reams of material provided by Parnas as they prepared for Trump's Senate impeachment trial, and the transition of the material to the Senate suggests House Democrats may cite the documents while presenting their case. Joseph Bondy, Parnas' attorney, hand-delivered the contents of an iPhone to the Intelligence panel's staff over the weekend. The House panel made some of the documents that Parnas provided public on Tuesday, including a letter from Giuliani to then-President-elect Zelensky requesting a meeting as the President's personal attorney, in which Giuliani said he was working "with the President's knowledge and consent." There are also text messages that show Parnas' communications with members of Zelesnky's aides where he pursued a meeting between Zelensky and Giuliani and provided negative information about former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. The documents also include a hand-written note on stationery from the Ritz-Carlton in Vienna, Austria, that Bondy said was written by his client, which says: "get Zalensky (sic) to Annonce (sic) that the Biden case will Be Investigated." There are also cryptic text messages suggesting that Yovanovitch's movements were being tracked. The Senate trial is expected to begin next week, and House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, is expected to lead the House's presentation of the case against the President. The House is expected to have to present exhibits and trial records ahead of time, according to sources, which means Democrats expected to need to provide materials on the front end — although the House has yet to see the formal resolution laying out the trial rules from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. "I think it's something we can't ignore," said Rep. Val Demings, a Florida Democrat on the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees, told CNN when asked about Parnas' documents. "To what extent we can get through it before the Senate trial remains to be seen." In response to the House committee releasing the records, Bondy tweeted: "HPSCI has just transmitted evidence from Lev Parnas to the Judiciary Committee, which it deemed relevant to @POTUS' impeachment inquiry. Mr. Parnas remains committed to testifying as to all the actions he took in Ukraine on behalf of @realDonaldTrump." 'With his knowledge and consent'The tranche of documents released Tuesday included the previously undisclosed letter from Giuliani to Zelensky asking for a meeting in mid-May of last year. Parnas included a screenshot of the letter in a text to Serhiy Shefir, an aide to Zelensky. "Along with many others, I am very hopeful that your election is a real turning point and allows the Ukraine to prosper and overcome some of the long-standing problems of the past," Giuliani wrote. He then made his ask: "In my capacity as personal counsel to President Trump and with his knowledge and consent, I request a meeting with you on this upcoming Monday, May 13th or Tuesday, May 14th. I will need no more than a half-hour of your time and I will be accompanied by my colleague Victoria Toensing, a distinguished American attorney who is very familiar with this matter." Subsequent texts between Parnas and Shefir indicate the two met in Kyiv at Restaurant Prague after Giuliani canceled his trip. The new documents also provide additional details on Giuliani's efforts to obtain a visa for former Ukrainian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin, which had been denied by the State Department. Giuliani repeatedly told Parnas in text messages that he would help him obtain a visa after it was denied, and provided Parnas with the contact info of the President's attorney Jay Sekulow. The visa was ultimately not issued. The texts help establish the role that Parnas played in Giuilani's Ukrainian efforts. In the early stages of the impeachment investigation, Trump allies described Parnas as a low-level "translator" who assisted Giuliani and occasionally had his photo snapped with Trump at events for political donors. But the documents make it clear that Parnas was not a bit player -- he was in direct communication with members of the incoming Zelensky administration in spring 2019. The documents reveal that Parnas communicated with Ivan Bakanov, who is the chief of Ukraine's Security Service, which means he is one of the senior law enforcement and intelligence officials in Ukraine. House Democrats say the documents show how Parnas sent articles to Bakanov containing smears and "false allegations" against Biden, and that Bakanov said he shared the articles with Zelensky. The articles were about alleged corruption by Biden and his son, the same claims Trump has promoted without providing any evidence. A new figure emergesThe texts disclosed Tuesday also revealed a previously unknown participant in Parnas' efforts: Republican Connecticut congressional candidate Robert Hyde. In a series of texts, Hyde ranted in crude language about a person identified by the House of Representative committee officials as Yovanovitch. "F--- that bitch," Hyde wrote to Parnas on March 22, 2019, in response to a series of articles and tweets Parnas sent him. The following day, he continued: "Wow. Can't believe Trumo (sic) hasn't fired this bitch. I'll get right in that." The House Intelligence Committee said that the texts suggested he had Yovnoavitch under physical surveillance while in Kiev. "Wake up Yankees man. She's talked to three people. Her phone is off. Computer is off. She's next to the embassy. Not in the embassy. Private security. Been there since Thursday." Hyde told Parnas "that address I sent you checks out" and "they are willing to help if we/you would like a price." He added: "Guess you can do anything in the Ukraine with money ... what I was told." The text messages also provide the first evidence that Giuliani and Parnas had advance notice Trump had made the decision in April to remove Yovanovitch as ambassador to Ukraine. One day before she was informed by her bosses at the State Department that she was being stripped of her position, Giuliani texted Parnas, "he fired her again," according to the documents. Giuliani has spoken openly about his role in removing Yovanovitch, but the information released Tuesday is the first contemporaneous written record of his central role in the scheme. Reached by a CNN reporter by phone Tuesday, Hyde declined to comment when asked about the House Democrats' statement that the text messages suggested Hyde had Yovanovitch under physical surveillance in Kiev. He said he has not heard from prosecutors. Told he was speaking to a CNN reporter, Hyde said: "Communist News Network? Sorry, I only talk to Fox, OAN and Blaze reporters like Eric Bolling." Larry Robbins, Yovanovitch's lawyer, declined to comment on the texts. Questions on how the documents will be used in Senate trialOn Tuesday, Schiff said he didn't know if the House impeachment managers would be able to present in the Senate any new evidence that has emerged since the chamber impeached Trump in late December because they don't know what the trial procedures will look like under the resolution being drafted by McConnell, a Kentucky Republican. "This is going to be a partisan resolution by Mitch McConnell, and I'm sure it will be drafted with the White House lawyers to give the President every advantage," Schiff said on MSNBC. "I will say this, though. It's going to be hard for the Senate to ignore information that comes into the public record and say we're not going to consider that, even though it's directly relevant, even though it's directly incriminating." Parnas and Igor Fruman worked with Giuliani in Ukraine as part of the President's lawyer's efforts to oust the US ambassador to Ukraine and then push the country to investigate Burisma, the Ukrainian gas company which made up the core of the House's impeachment case. Parnas and Fruman were indicted by federal prosecutors late last year. Parnas' document dump is one of several developments that have occurred since the House passed two impeachment articles against the President — and additional information could be released during the trial. The watchdog group American Oversight has already received documents from the State Department, thanks to Freedom of Information Act lawsuits, and is slated to receive Ukraine records from the Energy Department on January 28 — which is likely to be in the middle of the Senate trial. If new documents come up in the trial, Chief Justice John Roberts could have to rule on whether they are admissible. Fifty-one senators could vote to overturn a chief justice's decision, senators said. "We could" overturn Roberts' rulings, said Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri, a member of Senate GOP leadership. "Or if he doesn't admit (records), we could overturn the chief justice." It's not yet clear how Schiff and other potential House impeachment managers would use any new information during the trial that wasn't available when the House voted to impeach the President, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has touted the new development as part of her argument that the strategy of withholding the impeachment articles for nearly a month was effective. This story has been updated with additional developments Tuesday.

Mom's viral reaction to daughter's accident sparks debate on punishing kids - ABC News Posted: 14 Jan 2020 06:22 PM PST A North Carolina mother's viral Facebook post is igniting conversations surrounding parenting styles, and how to approach your child when they've done something wrong. Rosie Lamphere, co-founder of the blog Play At Home Mom, recently shared an incident with followers describing how her kids put a hole in the wall. Lamphere, of Raleigh, explained how she addressed the situation with her daughters, Sienna, 8, Mia, 9, and Briella, 11: She didn't need me to make her feel guilty. She didn't need me to shame her. "I'm sorry!!!"" I know you are. "Daddy is going to be so mad!!! I'm not ready to tell him yet." That is OK. When you are ready, you will tell him. She knew. She knew that he was the one most impacted by this. He would be the one taking time from his day to fix this. Lamphere went on, sharing how she and her spouse knew they had two choices: 1. Scream and yell and make her feel more awful than she already does. 2. Accept that little girl for each bit of awesome that she is ... even in her mistakes. To realize that it was SO hard for her to come down and tell you how she made a mistake. Our response will 100% determine how she comes to us with mistakes in the future. "My husband, if it was anything to test his patience this was it -- so it was comical," Lamphere told "Good Morning America," explaining how her girls accidentally ran into the wall and one of them offered allowance money for the damages. "For me, I think it's very important not to corrupt the relationship between my daughter and I. The consequence was the hole in the wall and she had already experienced all the guilt from that. She didn't need anything from me." "Communication is very important with our children," Lamphere added. "We talk about mistakes a lot. No one's perfect. We try to show them how we can be vulnerable ... it's important for them to see that so she [knows] we are not superheroes as parents." Lamphere's post on Play At Home Mom's Facebook page garnered 249,000 shares and 27,000 comments, many of which applauded the mother of three for her grace. "So very important. We as adults make mistakes and have accidents too. We're human," one wrote. Others shared personal experiences. "This made me super emotional. I wonder if I'd still be the anxious, fearful mess I am today if I had been raised the way you raise your daughters," one said. "The same thing happened recently to us but it was because of a meltdown," another commented. "I sat on the floor with her. I didn't yell. I tried to meet her where she was emotionally." Other parents, however, said Lamphere's calm approach wouldn't work in their home. "I have kids who feel no remorse," a mother wrote. "Parenting is impossible." Dr. Stephanie Samar, a clinical psychologist at the Mood Disorders Center of the Child Mind Institute, said as a parent, your reaction should be in line with your priorities. "It depends on who your kid is, what you're working on with your kids and what you want your kid to learn," Samar told "GMA." "How you respond is dependent on what your goals are as a parent." But relying heavily on punishment may only put out "small fires" rather than creating long term, sustainable change, Samar added. "Our natural urge is to go to punishment, if we're angry or hurt or upset -- the urge is to retaliate," she explained. "But really, if we're thinking about parenting, we are thinking about learning and teaching and these very big, long term goals for our children." "Punishment doesn't really achieve that." Here, Samar offers tactics for choosing appropriate consequences. Genuine expression: Be careful about your emotionsSince children learn through modeled behavior, try not to yell and scream if you do not want them to scream and yell at others. "Express emotion in the way we'd want them to respond to others," Samar noted. Take a pause for yourselfThis way, you can think objectively on how you'll deal with the issue at hand. Get on their levelKneel down, hold eye contact and keep explanations short so you won't lose their attention. If removing privileges, make sure it's short term and age-appropriateFor younger children, keep it to a few minutes to a couple of hours. For older kids and teens, maybe it's 24 to 48 hours. Taking punishments far beyond this is a waste considering the learning experience has already happened, Samar said. "Because the longer the punishment goes, as well as the more often parents use it, kids lose sight of what they're being punished for." Samar said the right approach could encourage your child to confide more in the future. Lamphere agreed, saying in her post that her daughter "walks around with a little more trust." "She walks around feeling loved and connected," she wrote. "She walks around knowing that she can tell her parents anything and that she is safe." The lawyer of a key impeachment witness is trolling Trump and the Republicans - indy100 Posted: 14 Jan 2020 05:25 PM PST ![]() The lawyer for a man who could become a star witness in the ongoing impeachment process against Donald Trump is trolling the president as part of a campaign to win his client the chance to reveal what he knows about the Ukraine scandal to Congress. Lev Parnas is one of two Eastern European-born associates of Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani that were arrested back in October after being charged with campaign finance violations relating to Trump's re-election effort. Parnas, along with his business partner Igor Fruman, were apprehended as Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia and it subsequently transpired both men had access to Trump's inner circle and might have played a part in the plot to uncover dirt on the president's domestic political rival Joe Biden. With the president found to have abused his power and obstructed Congress by the House, his trial in the Senate is expected to get underway within weeks and Joseph A Bondy, Parnas's lawyer, is starting to make a lot of noise on Twitter with his client willing to testify. According to Bondy a "trove" of Parnas's WhatsApp messages, texts and images have been handed over could that contain details of others who are relevant to the impeachment inquiry. Bondy has also added that the contents of two phones that belong to his client have been handed over to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence but the contents of which, remain under a protective order preventing it from entering the public discourse before adding that they are working on obtaining more materials for the HPSCI. Since those tweets, which were posted on Monday, Bondy has adopted a much more relaxed and comedic tone where he has taken to mocking the likes of Trump, Giuliani and Mitch McConnell. One tweet sees him call out Rep. Steve Scalise, the Republican's Minority Whip in the House of Representatives who back in November called Trump's impeachment a "charade." Bondy quote retweeted Scalise's post about the impeachment with a picture of Scalise stood alongside Parnas and Fruman which isn't awkward for the Republican at all. Another tweet sees Bondy tag Trump, Giuliani, McConnell and Democratic senator and Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer demanding that they 'call the witnesses' followed by the hashtags #LetLevSpeak and #LevRembers. The creme de la creme of this tweet is the video that Bondy has including which is basically a slide show of Parnas photographed alongside Trump and Giuliani set to MC Hammer's 'U Can't Touch This.' We're not entirely sure what has warranted this kind of iconic behaviour from Bondy but Twitter is here for it. Phase one trade deal could be less than market hopes: 'Tariffs have now become a roach motel' - CNBC Posted: 14 Jan 2020 05:25 PM PST ![]() U.S. President Donald Trump, and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during a welcome ceremony outside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Nov. 9, 2017. Qilai Shen | Bloomberg | Getty Images Investors have been waiting for details of the "phase one" trade deal, expected to be signed between the U.S. and China Wednesday, but they may already know most of what's in it and there may be little new. Stocks have been buoyed by optimism around the deal for weeks now. Tuesday was no different, and the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 were at all-time highs before a trade-related headline from a news service rattled markets and sent the indexes into negative territory. Analysts have said there could be some volatility around the release of the trade deal details. An agreement that is very light on details with no teeth to stop trade abuses could potentially be seen as a negative. So stocks were rattled, when Bloomberg news service Tuesday afternoon reported that tariffs were not expected to be lifted until a phase two deal. The report also said the phase two deal was not expected until after the November election, but strategists say that was not a surprise, and a market, looking to sniff out a positive surprise, was dealt a temporary setback. The deal is expected to stop any further tariffs and roll back some 15% tariffs to 7.5% on some Chinese goods. "There's always 'buy the rumor, sell the news.' Part of the reason why we had this tremendous, incredible rally last year and especially toward the end of the year, and why we got off to a good start this year, was we had a raft of good news, on earnings, and also on China trade," said Ed Keon, chief investment strategist at QMA. "Stocks are not cheap and any bit of news could have an impact on the market." Tom Block, Washington policy analyst at Fundstrat, said it is unusual for there to be so few details on a deal that is about to be signed. "Everything I've read, and everyone I talked to has said this was basically a standstill agreement with some side things, and we now know one of those side things was that the U.S. dropped that China was a currency manipulator," he said. "I don't think that's a coincidence." Block said the deal could still be being finalized, and if there is a sticking point it could be over how China's commitment to buying U.S. agricultural products was to be worded. He expects to see an agreement on Chinese purchases of agricultural and energy products. There could also be some language protecting U.S. intellectual property. "This is a real cease-fire. This is the most substance of cease-fire that we've seen," he said. Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer of Bleakley Advisory Group, said there was really nothing new in the headline. Stock indexes fluctuated, with the Dow moving back to positive territory. "It's not surprising. There was no blueprint to remove the tariffs. We saw that upon the announcement of a deal when they slightly trimmed some of the tariffs from 15% to 7.5% even though they left tariffs on all the existing goods," Boockvar said. "The assumption was the tariffs would not come off until there was a phase two deal and Trump said the other day there would be no phase two until the after the election. It was always my belief they would not come off until we got a phase two deal. We're still stuck with these tariffs which are a drag on growth in trade and manufacturing." "These tariffs have now become a roach motel," said Boockvar. Keon said the market is not really looking for much more on the trade deal. "It looks like we'll agree to take some tariffs down. We already took them off the currency manipulator list. They're going to agree to buy some agricultural products., There's probably some language that says they'll cooperate on intellectual property. It's my guess there will be some vague language." Block said Trump will leave the door open for further tariffs on Europe but he is not likely to launch any new ones just now. "He wants NATO to do more in the Middle East, and it's hard to do that if you're escalating the trade war," said Block. VIDEO: Lukaku continues tear with goal in opening 20 seconds - ProSoccerTalk Posted: 14 Jan 2020 04:53 PM PST Romelu Lukaku has settled in quite well since joining Inter Milan from Manchester United last summer, hasn't he? [ MORE: Inter Milan still chasing January deal for Christian Eriksen ] The 26-year-old Belgian forward already has 14 Serie A goals (in 19 games) to his name, plus another four in various other competitions, including the opening goal in Inter's 4-1 Coppa Italia victory over Cagliari on Tuesday. Just like he hasn't taken long to get started in his Inter career, Lukaku needed very little time to start firing on Tuesday. He struck the ball with 00:20 on the clock, and by the time it read 00:21 he had already put Inter 1-0 ahead.
That 20th-second strike stood up as the potential game-winner for more than 70 minutes, until Cagliari pulled a consolation goal back late. Fortunately for Inter, Lukaku had already bagged his second of the game (49th minute), sandwiching a supplementary goal from Borja Valero in the first half. Andrea Ranocchia tacked on a late insurance goal and Inter are through to the quarterfinals on Jan. 29. [ FA CUP: Spurs do just enough to beat Boro, reach 4th round (video) ] Lukaku's early successes at Inter have been such that it almost seems impossible that he could have been anything but a similarly raging success at Manchester United. If Inter manage to do the unthinkable — dethrone Juventus by winning the Serie A title — he'll almost certainly be remembered as the key protagonist. After Tuesday's game, Lukaku sounded like a player who was back to enjoying the game when he gave all credit to his Inter teammates, coaches, staff and fans — translation via Google:

French director detained, accused of abusing teen actress - WDIV ClickOnDetroit Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:11 AM PST PARIS – A French filmmaker is in custody while authorities investigate accusations that he sexually abused an actress when she was between 12 and 15 years old. Director Christophe Ruggia was detained for questioning Tuesday based on allegations last year by actress Adele Haenel, according to the Paris prosecutor's office. Ruggia denies the allegations. He's facing potential charges of sexual harassment and sexual assault of a minor by a person of authority, according to the prosecutor's office. Haenel says the director repeatedly touched her inappropriately during and after filming of the the movie "Les Diables" in the early 2000s. She told French media that she didn't file a legal complaint because she didn't trust the French legal system. The investigation is unusual in France, which hasn't seen a wave of accusations of sexual misconduct by men in positions of power like the #MeToo movement that shook Hollywood and U.S. politics. Liverpool to end Awoniyi's Mainz loan amid interest from Europe - Goal.com Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:53 AM PST ![]() Liverpool are likely to end Taiwo Awoniyi's loan at Mainz this month, with the Nigerian striker the subject of interest from a host of European clubs. The 22-year-old had hoped to shine when moving to Germany last summer, but has made just six appearances for the Bundesliga strugglers. Only one of those was from the start, and Awoniyi was substituted at half-time in that game with Mainz down to 10 men away at Fortuna Dusseldorf. In fact, the forward has managed only 150 minutes in total for his club this term. And with Jean-Philippe Mateta, Mainz's main striker, having returned to action just before the winter break, it is anticipated that Awoniyi will find it even harder to get regular football in the second half of the campaign. Liverpool have the option to terminate the loan agreement, but will not do so unless a clear opportunity for game-time arises. They have not been short of interest, with Greek giants Olympiacos among those keen. Ligue 1 trio Montpellier, Brest and Nimes are also understood to be monitoring the situation, while Turkish outfit Besiktas and La Liga duo Leganes and Real Mallorca have also made enquiries. Liverpool intend to meet with interested parties in the coming days, but are aware that Awoniyi would ideally prefer to remain in Germany. The Nigeria Under-23 international joined the Reds in 2015 but has since spent his time out on loan, with the club unable to secure a UK work permit. Spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen and Gent failed to work out, but Awoniyi was impressive in two stints with Belgian outfit Mouscron. He scored 10 goals in 28 appearances during the 2017-18 campaign, then returned for the second half of last season and netted 11 times in 15 games. Liverpool had fielded interest from across Europe last summer, and had intended to take him on their three-game tour of the USA in July, as back-up to Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster. But a thigh injury suffered a week before he was due to report for pre-season scuppered that plan. Awoniyi did not return to full training until mid-August, by which time Mainz had added Adam Szalai, the veteran Hungary striker, to their squad. Szalai, 32, has remained ahead in the pecking order, despite scoring just once in 14 Bundesliga appearances. Mainz return to league action at home to Freiburg on Saturday, but the expectation at Anfield is that Awoniyi is unlikely to remain at the club until the end of the season. The question now is simply which proposal offers the best chance of regular football.
