Record rain in Indonesia kills at least 60 - NHK WORLD

Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:07 AM PST

At least 60 people have died in extreme flooding and landslides in and around the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Record rainfall over New Year's caused rivers to burst their banks and submerge a dozen districts.

Flood waters are now receding, allowing locals to assess the damage.
People near Jakarta are beginning to clean up.
But many outlying villages remain inundated by water, or buried in mud.
The government says about 90,000 people still can't return home.
People are bracing for further downpours which are forecast for the coming days and weeks.
Health officials are also attempting to guard against waterborne diseases, by spraying disinfectant.

Golden Globes: Awkwafina Becomes First Asian-American to Win Best Actress - The New York Times

Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:04 AM PST

Awkwafina on Sunday night became the first Asian-American woman to win a Golden Globe Award for best actress, winning in the musical or comedy category for her role in "The Farewell."

Her award was the only win of the night for the movie, in which Awkwafina plays a Chinese-American immigrant struggling with her cultural identity while trying to shield her grandmother (Zhao Shuzhen) from a grim diagnosis.

"The Farewell" was also nominated for best foreign film, which went to "Parasite."

"If I fall upon hard times, we can sell this," Awkwafina said in her speech, hoisting her trophy in the air. "So that's good."

It was a dry year at the Globes for films directed by or about women, with "The Farewell" director Lulu Wang — and all other women — being left out of the directing category.

"You gave me this chance, the chance of a lifetime, and you taught me so much," Awkwafina said to Wang in her speech. "And just filming this story, being with you, was incredible."

Here is Awkwafina's speech in its entirety.

This is great. Thank you. If anything, if I fall upon hard times, we can sell this, so that's good. First of all, thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press. I've never been to the Golden Globes, so I'm here now, and it's this and it's great. I'd like to thank everyone at A24, Peter Saraf, Dani Melia, Big Beach and Andrew Miano.

I'd like to thank the woman who plays my grandma in "The Farewell," Zhao Shuzhen. … Thank you, and most importantly, to Lulu Wang, our incredible director. You gave me this chance, the chance of a lifetime, and you taught me so much. And just filming this story, being with you, was incredible. I'd like to dedicate this to my dad, Wally. I told you I'd get a job, Dad. And to my grandma, my best friend, the woman who raised me. And to my mother, Tia, who I always hoped was watching from somewhere above, and I hope that she's watching now. Thank you all, thank you.

Iraq could become 'very dangerous' as US-Iran tensions ramp up, says former ambassador - CNBC

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:37 PM PST

Supporters of the Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary force attend the funeral procession of Iraqi paramilitary chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, and eight others in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 4, 2020.

While much of the world is fearing a potential escalation in tensions between the U.S. and Iran, a former American ambassador has warned that violence within Iraq could also become a major source of instability in the Middle East.

That comment by Douglas Silliman, former U.S. ambassador to Iraq from 2016 to 2019, came after a American airstrike last week killed top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani. Silliman pointed out that along with Soleimani, the strike also took out a powerful Iraqi militia leader, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis — a detail that escaped much media coverage.

"What worries me the most is that much of the world press and much of the world, as they're looking at an American-Iranian potential conflict, the impact on Iraq could be huge," the ambassador told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on Monday.

"I think that the loss of Soleimani and Muhandis could be very dangerous inside Iraq," he added.

What you might see is less experienced, less well-trained militias who are angry, feeling they can take it upon themselves to make these decisions to use violence and that could be dangerous for Iraq.

former U.S. ambassador to Iraq

Soleimani led the Iranian Quds Force — the foreign operations wing of the elite paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while al-Muhandis oversaw Iran-backed Iraqi militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces.

Al-Muhandis was at Baghdad's international airport on Friday to receive Soleimani who had just arrived by plane when the U.S. airstrike occurred, the Associated Press reported.

The two men had "alternately acted as an accelerator for violent actions against American forces, against their rivals and into Syria," said Silliman, who's now president of Washington-based think tank The Arab Gulf States Institute.

On the other hand, they also prevented escalation in violence when they felt the moves were not in the interest of Iran or Shia militias, the ambassador added.

Al-Muhandis had "consolidated control over the bulk of pro-Iranian Shia militias inside Iraq" and his death has left a leadership vacuum that could set loose those militias, explained Silliman. That's especially so because the various Shia militia groups are unlike Iran's Quds Force, which is a "very structured and disciplined military organization," he added.

"What you have taken out of this equation in Iraq is the command and control structure that had unified the numerous Shia militias inside Iraq, who may now feel free to think they can go off and do things on their own," the ambassador said.

"So, what you might see is less experienced, less well-trained militias who are angry, feeling they can take it upon themselves to make these decisions to use violence and that could be dangerous for Iraq," he concluded.

Actress Michelle Williams touts importance of 'a woman's right to choose' | TheHill - The Hill

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:04 PM PST

Actress Michelle Williams is making an impassioned pro-choice plea, saying she wouldn't have been able to live a life of her own making without "employing a woman's right to choose."

"When you put this in someone's hands, you're acknowledging the choices that they make as an actor — moment by moment, scene by scene, day by day — but you're also acknowledging the choices they make as a person," Williams said as she was honored at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards for her role in FX's "Fosse/Verdon."

Williams took home the trophy in the "Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television" category.

The 39-year-old performer, who's pregnant with her second child, told the audience she was "grateful to have lived at a moment in our society when choice exists because as women and as girls things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice."

"I've tried my very best to live a life of my own making and not just a series of events that happened to me but one that I could stand back and look at and recognize my handwriting all over," Williams said. "sometimes messy and scrawling, sometimes careful and precise, but one that I had carved with my own hand. And I wouldn't have been able to do this without employing a women's right to choose."

Cries of "Preach!" could be heard when Williams paused before continuing her remarks.

"To choose when to have my children and with whom, when I felt supported and able to balance our lives knowing as all mothers know that the scales must and will tip towards our children," Williams said.

"Now I know my choices might look different than yours," the actress said, "but thank god or whoever you pray to, that we live in a country founded on a principle that I'm free to live by my faith and you're free to live by yours."

"So women 18 to 118, when it's time to vote, please do so in your own self-interest," Williams said to applause. "It's what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them," she added.

"But don't forget we are the largest voting body in this country — let's make it look more like us."

An epic comeback, a confident Vrana and another clutch Eller goal - NBCSports.com

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:23 PM PST

A two-goal deficit with only a minute to play? No problem for the Caps who battled back for a 5-4 against the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.

Check out a recap of the game here.

Observations from the win

An epic comeback

What can you even say about this one? This was an incredible game.

Logan Couture scored an empty-netter with one minute to go in regulation. That put San Jose up 4-2. To me, to the writers, to many of the fans who began streaming to the exits, the game was over. Not to the Caps, however.

Jakub Vrana scored just 13 seconds later and T.J. Oshie scored 32 seconds after that to complete the two-goal comeback in the final minute. Lars Eller finished off an incredible overtime with the game-winner.

That's why you keep pulling the goalie

When a team pulls the goalie and the opponent scores on the empty net, it seems to be standard operating procedure to return the goalie to the net and just take the loss at that point. Why? Why not keep pulling him?

Goal differential matters very little in the NHL. At the end of the season it is the 5th tie-breaker after regulation wins, ROW, total wins and points earned in games between two teams. Basically, there is very little difference in the standings between a 4-2 loss and a 5-2 or 6-2 loss. Now yes, if you're down 7-1 and there are five seconds left, you can put a bow on that one, but you have to applaud Todd Reirden for pulling Braden Holtby again after Couture's empty-netter made it 4-2. A lot of coaches would have packed it in. Reirden didn't and the Caps won because of it.

The Caps now lead the league in goals scored with the goalie pulled with seven.

Unsung hero

Jakub Vrana has 18 goals this season. That is second on the team. All 18 of his goals are at even strength. That ranks tied for 3rd in the entire NHL. He is tied with Patrick Kane.

Unsung heroes

Down 1-0 in the second period, the fourth line put together a brilliant few minutes. Nic Dowd tied the game just 64 seconds after Evander Kane's goal, then Reirden elected to keep that line on the ice for the faceoff and they delivered with a 2-on-1 opportunity to nearly score again and drew a penalty. That is a huge swing and shows you the kind of impact the fourth line is having for them this season.

Not the right time, Kuzy

At the end of the second period with the Caps trailing 3-2, Evgeny Kuznetsov had the game-tying goal on his stick with a breakaway opportunity. As he approached Martin Jones, he attempted the between-the-legs shot and failed miserably. He missed the puck and did not even get a shot on goal.

That was not the time to attempt a shot like that. The team was losing and you had a breakaway, you have to at least get the shot on net.

The reaction was immediate. Most people hated the attempt, but there was no real consensus on when it is acceptable to try a shot like that.

Do you do it when the game is tied? Do you do it when team has a narrow lead? Some said it is OK only when the game is already well in hand. OK, but if you are up 6-0 and Kuznetsov tries a between-the-legs shot, you all know he would be skewered by everyone for being a showboat.

Do you do it ever?

I enjoy seeing creativity in the game, like Andrei Svechnikov's behind the net goal lacrosse goal. The difference there, to me, is that behind the net is no guarantee of getting a high-quality opportunity. You're not just giving up the puck to try a fancy play. In Kuznetsov's case, he is on a breakaway. He is giving up a high-quality opportunity and a chance to tie the game to try a much harder play for no reason. That's why you can't do that there.

3-on-3 is awesome

Please, please make overtime 10 minutes. I want more 3-on-3 hockey and fewer shootouts. This was awesome to watch.

Turning point

It looked like the game was over when Couture scored with a minute left, but Vrana put the Caps right back in it just 13 seconds later. Still, Washington had to complete the comeback and force the tie which they did thanks to this goal from Oshie.

Play of the game

Eller has a knack for scoring big goals.

Stat of the game

Overcoming a two-goal deficit in the final minute of play for the win is a first for the Caps.

Quote of the game

Reirden was happy about a lot of things after the game. Kuznetsov's breakaway shot was not one of them.

"I would have preferred probably a different move, one that ends up and the goalie having to make a save. I've seen him score on a lot of other moves that I know work. I'd prefer a different move in that situation at a time when we could have changed the momentum of the game."

Fan predictions

Kuznetsov was in, but that did not stop Eller for getting a goal and an assist.

The roles were reversed this year.

https://twitter.com/Zen1DC/status/1213869620182036485

I love the super-specific predictions. I always pull for someone to nail one of these.

Mudslides, Blackouts Hamper Search After Indonesia Floods - The New York Times

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:07 PM PST

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Mudslides and power blackouts hampered the search for people missing in massive floods in Indonesia's capital, where more than 60 people have died and some of the tens of thousands of evacuees were living in damp, cramped emergency shelters.

More than a thousand soldiers and health workers sprayed disinfectant in hard-hit areas on Sunday to fend off diseases that could spread in the floods. Monsoon rains and rising rivers submerged a dozen districts in the greater Jakarta area after extreme New Year's Eve rains, causing landslides in hilly areas on the outskirts of the capital that buried scores of people.

It's the worst flooding in the area since 2007, when 80 people were killed over 10 days. More rain is in the forecast, and the potential for more extreme rainfall is possible for the next month.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Agus Wibowo said Monday the death toll from flash flood and landslides in and around Jakarta rose to 66 and rescuers are still searching for two people reportedly still missing in Lebak, a district in neighboring Banten province.

In Lebak district, where flash floods and mudslides damaged more than 2,000 houses in several villages, some were swept away, rescuers were still searching for a 7-year-old boy reportedly dragged away by flash flooding that killed at least nine people, said Zainal Arifin, a local search and rescue agency chief.

He said mudslides that covered much of the area, blackouts and lack of telecommunications were hampering the search efforts.

About 11,000 health workers were deployed to provide medical care for people affected by the flooding, Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said in a statement. He said there had been no recorded cases of serious waterborne diseases, after disinfectant spraying started Sunday.

Waters have receded in most parts of greater Jakarta, allowing many residents to return and clean up, but scores of tightly packed settlements close to rivers that often suffer from floods during the rainy season remained inundated or covered in mud and debris.

Government data on Monday showed some 35,500 people were unable to return to their homes, with the receding floodwaters still .6 meters (2 feet) high in places.

In an emergency shelter at a sports center in south Jakarta, mothers breast-fed their babies near piles of smelly wet garbage.

"My baby is not sleeping as the rain comes in, the wind comes in," Yuyun Yuniarti said while holding her 7-month-old baby in a sling. "It is disgusting here, but we are stuck."

Yuniarti said food and medicine appeared to be sufficient, with authorities and private organizations delivering regular supplies of food at most shelters in recent days.

A temporary clinic was treating patients close to where Yuniarti was sleeping, including many suffering from respiratory illnesses.

Indonesia's meteorology agency said more downpours were forecast for the capital in the coming days, and that the potential for extreme rainfall would continue until next month across the vast archipelago nation.

Indonesia is hit by deadly floods each year, and this year's have been particularly bad in Jakarta, with nearly 400,000 people seeking refuge in some 270 shelters across the greater metropolitan area as floodwaters reached up to 6 meters (19 feet) in some places.

Indonesia beefs up patrols after China boat spat - The ASEAN Post

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:07 PM PST

Indonesia is stepping up sea and aerial patrols of islands near the disputed South China Sea, an official said Saturday, following a diplomatic spat over "trespassing" Chinese vessels.

Military aircraft and three warships with some 600 navy, army and air force personnel have been deployed to waters around the Natuna islands, which border the South China Sea.

Indonesia has detained Chinese vessels in the fishing-rich waters in the past.

"Territorial violations by foreign vessels in Indonesian exclusive economic zone... is a threat to Indonesian sovereignty," defence commander Vice Admiral Yudo Margono said in a statement.

The move comes after Indonesia summoned the Chinese ambassador this week and lodged a "strong protest" over a Chinese coast guard vessel escorting Chinese fishing boats around the islands in mid-December.

Beijing responded that it has "historic rights" in the region and that fishing boats had been carrying out "legal and reasonable" activities.

China lays claim to huge swathes of the South China Sea, where it is accused of building military installations and artificial islands - and ramming fishing vessels.

Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei also have claims in the South China Sea.

Beijing claims the majority of the resource-rich waterway through the so-called nine-dash line, a vague delineation based on maps from the 1940s as the then Republic of China snapped up islands from Japanese control.

Indonesia does not have a claim in the South China Sea, but said it would not tolerate incursions by China - a key trading partner - into its nearby waters.

"There is no compromise on Indonesia's sovereignty," Presidential spokesman Fajroel Rachman said Saturday. – AFP

The Latest: Elton John wins Globes for ‘Rocketman’ song - WTOP

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on on the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards honoring achievements in television and film and being presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California (all times local):

6:20 p.m.

Fleabag has won its second Golden Globe of the night, this time for Golden Globe for best TV comedy series.

Creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge won best actress in a TV comedy earlier in the evening. "Succession" has also won two Globes in the TV drama categories.

The Globe goes with six Emmy Awards "Fleabag" won in September, including outstanding comedy series, with Waller-Bridge winning for both her acting and her writing.

The Amazon show based on a one-woman show performed by Waller-Bridge follows a misanthropic single woman in her relationships with men and family in London. It also stars Sian Clifford and Olivia Colman.

The second season, for which the show won the Globe, features a burgeoning relationship between Waller-Bridge and a priest, played by Andrew Scott.

Waller-Bridge thanked Barack Obama for including the show among his favorites of the year, and admitted her feelings for the ex-president run strong.

"Thank you Barack Obama for putting you on my list," Waller-Bridge said from the stage. "You've always been on mine. And if you don't know what that means, watch season one of 'Fleabag.'"

___

6:15 p.m.

Laura Dern has won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a film for "Marriage Story."

Dern's victory on Sunday night gives her her fifth Golden Globe, but her first for her work in film — the previous four all came for roles in television.

Dern plays a savvy divorce lawyer who represents Scarlett Johansson in director Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story."

6:10 p.m.

Ramy Youssef says he still needed to first thank God after Ricky Gervais' "Thank your God and get off the stage" joke at the outset of Golden Globe Awards.

Youssef said backstage that his religion is an important part of his life after he won best actor in a TV comedy for "Ramy." He plays a millennial American Muslim from an Egyptian family grappling with tradition and modernity in a divided New Jersey community.

"I was going to say anyway that I am very thankful to God," Youssef said. "My show is about some of these in their faith. So I don't always feel like I'm on the same page with the comedic styling of a Ricky Gervais on that subject. That's something that means a lot to me."

Gervais is a vocal atheist.

Veteran actor Brian Cox has won the first Golden Globe of his long career for his work on "Succession."

Cox took home the globe for best actor on a TV drama series for his portrayal of media magnate and family patriarch Logan Roy in the series about a wealthy family of media magnates in turmoil.

It was just the second Golden Globe nomination for the Scottish native Cox.

"Next year I will have been in this business for 60 years," the 73-year-old Cox said as he accepted the award, joking that "I started when I was 2."

Ellen DeGeneres reflected on her career and her imaginary family as she accepted the Carol Burnett Award for Excellence in Television at the Golden Globes.

DeGeneres said it took her a while to find her way in TV, even after she made history by coming out as gay on her sitcom.

"I had a sitcom. And I lost that sitcom. Then I had another sitcom, and I lost that sitcom too," she said. "I got to do something I always wanted to do: Make whiskey. Then I got a talk show. I got a talk show. And I was able to be myself. I feel like you all have gotten to know me. I'm an open book."

DeGeneres then poked fun at her sexuality, thanking a man who doesn't exist.

"I couldn't have done it without my husband Mark. Mark, you are my rock," DeGeneres said to big laughs from the audience, including her wife, actress Portia de Rossi.

DeGeneres and de Rossi have no children, but DeGeneres talked to a couple anyway, looking at the camera and saying, "Rupert and Fiona go to bed."

She also paid tribute to Carol Burnett, who received the inaugural award named for her last year before DeGeneres became the second recipient.

The groundbreaking class satire "Parasite" is the winner of the Golden Globe Award for best foreign language film.

Director Bong Joon Ho's movie has been one of the year's most acclaimed films, in May becoming the first Korean film to win the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film is about a family of hustlers who insert themselves in the lives of a wealthy family. It is ineligible to compete in the Globes' two best picture categories, but is considered a strong candidate for a best film Oscar nomination later this month.

Bong spoke out for foreign films in his acceptance.

"Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will experience so many more amazing films," the director said through a translator.

___

5:35 p.m.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is continuing her awards dominance, winning the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV comedy for her role on "Fleabag."

Waller-Bridge take her first Golden Globe for her role on the Amazon series she created, to go with the acting Emmy she won in September along with Emmys for best TV comedy and for her writing.

With the win she unseats Rachel Brosnahan of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," who took the Globe for the previous two years.

The actress praised her co-star, Andrew Scott, who she said could have chemistry with a pebble.

"I love being Andrew's pebble in this," Waller-Bridge said as Scott smiled broadly in the audience.

"Succession" has won the Golden Globe for best TV drama series.

The HBO drama created by Jesse Armstrong that chronicles rivalries and relationships in a family of media magnates wins the Golden Globe for its second season.

The ensemble cast includes Brian Cox, Sarah Snook, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin and Hiam Abbass.

It beat out previous Golden Globe winners "Big Little Lies" and "The Crown."

___

5:15 p.m.

The first Golden Globe of the night was the kind of surprise that is typical of the show: Ramy Youssef won best actor in a TV comedy for "Ramy."

"I know you guys haven't seen my show," Youssef said as he accepted the award. "Everyone's like, is this an editor?"

"My mom was rooting for Michael Douglas," he added. "For some reason Egyptians like Michael Douglas."

Youssef was considered a longshot in a group of nominees that included Douglas, Bill Hader and Paul Rudd.

The 28-year-old Youseff plays a millennial American Muslim from an Egyptian family grappling with tradition and modernity in a divided New Jersey community.

"I'd like to thank my God," he said as he received the award.

He wins for the first season of the Hulu series, which has been renewed for a second.

___

5:05 p.m.

Ricky Gervais warned the audience at the Golden Globes that he was going to be as mean as he's always been as host, but not to take it to hard.

"Remember, they're just jokes," Gervais said to open the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills. "We're all going to die soon. And there's no sequel."

He immediately started poking at celebrities, starting with the college admissions scandal.

"I came here in a limo," Gervais said, "and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman."

Gervais then pointed out what icons were in the audience, especially at the table for "The Irishman."

"Just at this one table," Gervais said, "is Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Baby Yoda. Oh wait, no, that's Joe Pesci."

Gervais, who has hosted four times before but not in the #MeToo era, took a shot there too. He said there was a wide variety of stars in the room, and they all have one thing in common: "They're all afraid of Ronan Farrow," Gervais said.

Farrow has played a key role in outing sexual misconduct as a reporter for The New Yorker.

Gervais returned this year for the first time since 2016 to host the annual champagne-soaked party that serves as the informal opening of Hollywood's Awards season.

4:45 p.m.

"Hustlers" director Lorene Scafaria says "a lot has changed for the better" for women in the movie industry, but the absence of female directors nominated at the Golden Globes shows that "things have been slow to catch up."

Scafaria spoke from the red carpet before the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday in Beverly Hills. Hers is among several movies including "The Farewell," "Little Women" and "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" that scored nominations, but not for the women who directed them.

"We need storytellers who have a different perspective," Scafaria said. "But we need awards like this to highlight us."

Mark Duplass of the Apple Plus TV series "The Morning Show," who is himself a film director, says the snubbing of women is just wrong.

"I went on Instagram to congratulate all the female director nominees," he said from the carpet. "But then I said 'Oh, wait. They didn't get nominated this year.'"

— Amanda Lee Myers (@AmandaLeeAP) and Jonathan Landrum Jr. (@MrLandrum31) on the Globes red carpet.

The stars are shimmering and shining Sunday on the Golden Globes red carpet.

"Harriet" nominee Cynthia Erivo is rocking a stunning diamond choker with a huge blue stone at the center. Her custom off-shoulder, tuxedo-inspired gown was created by Thom Browne. It took 800 hours to create the all-over hand beading and embroidery.

Kirsten Dunst and Dakota Fanning chose pink, an early color trend, but Jennifer Lopez went her own way in voluminous gown with a huge bow partially in green. Billy Porter didn't disappoint in an epic cream feathered train. It was attached to his tuxedo jacket.

___

3:30 p.m.

The few stars arriving early at the the ballroom where the Golden Globes are held can enjoy oversized bottles of Champagne and begin sipping on the chilled golden beet soup. It's part of the new vegan menu for this year's show.

The entree is king oyster mushroom scallops followed by an opera dome for dessert, a fancy name for a chocolate treat that includes pralines and hazelnuts.

The Globes has gotten attention this year for going to a plant-based menu as apart of a broader sustainability push.

Typically the biggest stars arrive close to the ceremony's 5 p.m. Pacific start time, meaning they miss out on dinner. The meal is cleared from the rose-bedecked tables 30 minutes of the start of the show. But there's still plenty of Champagne and wine to keep the crowd lubricated for the three-hour party, along with sandwiches and desserts in a bar area off the International Ballroom.

— Beth Harris (@bethharrisAP on Twitter) inside the Golden Globes ballroom

___

3:15 p.m.

The first stars have begun arriving at the Golden Globe Awards and are making their way down the red carpet.

Early arrivals included Pierce Brosnan and his family, including sons Dylan and Paris, who will be onstage throughout the evening helping presenters and award winners as the show's official ambassadors.

Director Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, were also among the first to arrive, as were "Fleabag" actor Andrew Scott and Chinese actress Zhao Shuzhen, who stars in "The Farewell."

The Globes are the first major awards show of a truncated awards season that will end with the Academy Awards on Feb. 9. That's given this year's Globes ceremony additional influence since voting for Oscar nominations is now underway.

___

8 a.m.

The Golden Globes are famously unpredictable, but a few sure things seem to be in store for Sunday's awards. Streaming services will play a starring role.

Five-time host Ricky Gervais will snicker at his own jokes. And Brad Pitt is all but assured of taking home an award. Netflix comes into Sunday's ceremony with a commanding 34 nods for its film and television offerings.

Jennifer Lopez could win her first Globe for her performance in "Hustlers" and there's a three-way showdown in the original song category between Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Elton John.

The 77th Golden Globes will begin at 8 p.m. EST and be broadcast live on NBC. For more on what to expect from Sunday's show, click here.

Awkwafina makes history at 2020 Golden Globes with lead-actress win - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:04 PM PST

Awkwafina has made history at the 2020 Golden Globes.

On Sunday, "The Farewell" actress became the first woman of Asian descent to win the award for lead actress in a movie comedy/musical.

Written and directed by Lulu Wang, "The Farewell" marked the dramatic lead debut for the actress, who was born Nora Lum. In the acclaimed film, Awkwafina plays Billi, an American woman whose family has chosen to keep the truth of a terminal diagnosis from her grandmother in China.

"I would never have expected something like this to happen, especially when we were filming," Awkwafina told The Times after her nomination was announced last month. "We just wanted to tell the story. So to see that it's getting recognition ... is really awesome."

Awkwafina is the second woman of Asian descent to be nominated in the category in two years. Last year, her "Crazy Rich Asians" costar Constance Wu was nominated for lead actress in a movie comedy/musical. (Olivia Colman won that year for her performance in "The Favourite").

Sandra Oh had a historic win at the 2019 Golden Globes, taking home the award for lead actress in a TV drama for her work on "Killing Eve," making her the first actor of Asian descent to win multiple Golden Globes (Oh was previously recognized in the TV supporting actress category for her work on "Grey's Anatomy").

In her acceptance speech Sunday night, Awkwafina paid tribute to her family's support.

"I'd like to dedicate this to my dad, Wally. I told you I'd get a job, Dad," she said. "To my grandma, my best friend, the woman who raised me. And to my mother, Tia, who I always hope is watching from somewhere above, and I hope that she's watching now."

The other nominees for the award were Ana de Armas ("Knives Out"), Cate Blanchett ("Where'd You Go, Bernadette"), Beanie Feldstein ("Booksmart") and Emma Thompson ("Late Night").

Trump threatens to slap sanctions on Iraq 'like they've never seen before' - CNBC

President Donald Trump threatened Sunday to slap sanctions on Iraq after its parliament passed a resolution calling for the government to expel foreign troops from the country.

Tensions in the Middle East spiraled last week after Trump called for a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad that killed a top Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, the U.S. president said: "If they do ask us to leave, if we don't do it in a very friendly basis, we will charge them sanctions like they've never seen before ever. It'll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame."

"We have a very extraordinarily expensive air base that's there. It cost billions of dollars to build. Long before my time. We're not leaving unless they pay us back for it," Trump said.

The president added that "If there's any hostility, that they do anything we think is inappropriate, we are going to put sanctions on Iraq, very big sanctions on Iraq."

Soleimani, the head of a special forces unit in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was the key architect of Iran's military operations overseas.

He was killed late Thursday while leaving Baghdad airport, when his convoy was struck by a drone, ordered by the U.S. president. One of those killed with him was a key Iraqi militia leader, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces.

The Iraqi government has accused Washington of violating its sovereignty.

"The Iraqi government must work to end the presence of any foreign troops on Iraqi soil and prohibit them from using its land, airspace or water for any reason," read the resolution passed by the Iraqi parliament, which convened in an extraordinary session on Sunday.

The U.S. ambassador to Iraq is set to meet a Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi on Monday to talk about the future of American military troops in Iraq, two U.S. officials familiar with the matter told NBC News. They said the U.S. was expecting Mahdi to inform the ambassador of its decision to expel U.S. troops in Iraq.

Soleimani's death marked a dramatic escalation in tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which was already deteriorating after Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdrew from the landmark Iran nuclear deal brokered by the Obama administration.

Tehran has vowed revenge for the commander's targeted killing.

Asked by reporters on Air Force One if he was worried about retaliation from Iran, Trump said: "If it happens it happens. If they do anything there will be major retaliation."

"They're allowed to kill our people. They're allowed to torture and maim our people, they're allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people. And we're not allowed to touch their cultural sites. It doesn't work that way."

On Saturday, Trump said in a series of tweets that the U.S. has targeted 52 sites "at a very high level and important to Iran and Iranian culture."

Trump warned in those tweets that the U.S. will strike those targets "very fast and very hard" if Iran retaliates.

Tens of Thousands of Flood Victims in Indonesia Remain Displaced - VOA News

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:07 PM PST

At least 60 people have died and nearly 100,000 people are unable to return home, days after devastating rains flooded the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

Some 11,000 health workers were deployed across the greater Jakarta area Sunday to spray chemicals and distribute medicine to prevent the spread of diseases such as dengue fever as the city remains under water.

Tens of thousands of people remained in temporary shelters, mostly in Western Jakarta Sunday. National weather experts in Indonesia warned that rains were expected to continue in the coming days.

Nonstop rainfall last week flooded 268 tracts in Indonesia, 158 in low-lying Jakarta, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said on its website. Drainage and levees in the capital are considered inadequate for storms of that scale, Southeast Asian economists say.

Tuesday's rainfall reached 377 millimeters (14.8 inches), a record since 2007, The Jakarta Post online said. The rains touched off landslides, trapped people in houses and prompted tens of thousands to evacuate, local media reports say.

Citizens of the city of 11 million want the government to improve flood control work, although much has been done already, said Rajiv Biswas, Asia-Pacific chief economist at market research firm IHS Markit. President Joko Widodo in July suggested building a seawall around Jakarta, much of which is below sea level.

'Riverdale' actress Vanessa Morgan marries baseball player Michael Kopech - UPI.com

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:04 PM PST

Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Riverdale actress Vanessa Morgan married professional baseball player Michael Kopech in Florida on Saturday.

"We both knew the first day we met that 'this is it' and I'm so excited that today officially starts our forever," the bride told E! News. "Today, I vowed to love my best friend for a lifetime and it was a day spent with those we love in a room filled with endless love. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him."

Morgan, 27, wore a white, beaded, long-sleeved gown, while the 23-year-old White Sox pitcher chose an off-white suit for the occasion.

Riverdale cast members Skeet Ulrich, Drew Tanner and Madelaine Petsch were among the 40 guests at what one source told People.com was a "stunning ceremony and reception" at the Historic Walton House in Homestead, south of Miami.

In the hours leading up to the service, Morgan posted an image on her Instagram Story account of her feet clad in white and rhinestone sneakers that said "Bride."

Another photo showed her dogs with a sign reading, "My hoomans are getting hitched."

The couple announced in July they had gotten engaged after about a year of dating.

Natalie Trundy Dead: Actress in Four 'Planet of the Apes' Movies' Was 79 - Hollywood Reporter

Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:34 PM PST

While still in her teens, she starred twice on Broadway and in films with Dean Stockwell and Marlene Dietrich.

Natalie Trundy, who starred with Dean Stockwell in The Careless Years and appeared in four of the five original Planet of the Apes movies, has died. She was 79.

Trundy died Dec. 15 in Los Angeles of natural causes, her daughter, Alessandra Sabato, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Then newly married to Planet of the Apes producer Arthur P. Jacobs, Trundy was cast as the radiation-scarred mutant Albina opposite astronaut James Franciscus in the franchise's first sequel, Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970).

The actress then portrayed Dr. Stephanie "Stevie" Branton in Escape From Planet of the Apes (1971) and the chimpanzee Lisa, who winds up marrying Roddy McDowall's Cornelius, in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973).

In June 1973, Jacobs died of a heart attack at age 51 in their Beverly Hills home while Trundy was in Mississippi filming a musical adaptation of Huckleberry Finn (1974), also produced by her husband. She made just one more onscreen appearance, on a 1978 episode of Quincy, M.E.

Born on Aug. 5, 1940, in Boston, Trundy appeared several times on live television before making her Broadway debut in 1953's A Girl Can Tell. The strawberry blonde then appeared in 1956 with Marlene Dietrich and Vittorio De Sica in The Montecarlo Story and with Shelley Winters on Broadway in Girls of Summer.

Trundy and Dean Stockwell play headstrong high school teenagers who go to Mexico to elope in The Careless Years (1957), the first feature directed by Arthur Hiller.

After appearing in the Jimmy Stewart film Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962) and on such TV shows as Climax!, Thriller, Bonanza and The Twilight Zone (in the 1963 episode "Valley of the Shadow"), Trundy was struck by a car and spent a year in a back brace.

The actress had met Jacobs, who was Dietrich's agent, during filming of The Montecarlo Story, and they bumped into each other in London while he was producing Doctor Dolittle (1967). (He would earn a best picture Oscar nomination for his work.) He became her second husband when they wed in London in June 1968.

Five years earlier, Jacobs, who also had repped Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Gregory Peck, Richard Burton and others, purchased the rights to Pierre Boulle's novel Monkey Planet, and the first entry in the Planet of the Apes series at 20th Century Fox reached theaters in April 1968.

Trundy chalked up her roles in the Apes moves to nepotism. She told Jacobs, "I wanna be in [the first sequel], and I was. All of them, from then on!" she said in Tom Weaver's 2003 book, Eye on Science Fiction. "I really did them for fun, if you want to know the truth."

Trundy later was married to Gucci executive Carmine Roberto Foggia — she had her daughter and son Francesco with him — and volunteered for years at Mother Theresa's hospice in Kolkata, India.

Maison book girl
