Taiwan, home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, will resume visa-free entry privileges for travelers from the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand starting Sept. 12, the Central News Agency reported on Sunday.

Citizens of the 14 nations with which Taiwan has diplomatic ties are also covered by the eased rules, CNA said, citing the Central Epidemic Command Center. Entry restrictions had been imposed in connection with the Covid-19 outbreak.

A weekly ceiling on arriving travelers will remain at 50,000, with all entries required to follow Taiwan’s "3+4" protocol of three days of quarantine and four days of "self-initiated epidemic prevention," the CECC said, according to CNA.

Taiwan has the world’s 22nd largest economy and is a leading global source of the semiconductors. Taiwan businesses that rank on the Forbes Global 2000list of the world's top publicly traded companies include Hon Hai Precision — the big supplier to Apple led by billionaire Terry Gou, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., or TSMC, which makes computer chips for Intel. Others among Taiwan's numerous Apple suppliers include Pegatron, Lite-On Technology, Inventec, Catcher Technology, Largan Precision and Compeq Manufacturing.

European countries included under the new eased visa policy include the 26 nations of the Schengen Area, as well as the United Kingdom and Ireland, the report said.
