The Entry/Exit System will not become effective on May 2023 as it has been planned by the European Union authorities, and a new date for its full launch will become known soon.

The eu-LISA, which is the EU agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, has announced that May is no longer a realistic day for the system to become effective due to delays by contractors.

The delay has been revealed during a meeting held on January 12 in Tallinn, Estonia, between eu-LISA’s Management Board, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

For EES, the planned Entry into Operation of May 2023 is considered no longer achievable due to delays from the contractors. The Agency is currently preparing a revised timeline that will presented for approval at the JHA Council in March 2023,” the agency has said in a press release following the meeting.

In order for the new deadlines to be met, the Management Board has invited all stakeholders to continue working in order to be prepared to meet the new target date before the end of 2023. It has also urged border crossing points to fully equip with the necessary tools for the use of the system, by the end of 2023.

The Entry/Exit System, shortly known as the EES, is a new European automated IT system which will be keeping track of travellers from third countries who come to the EU with a short-term visa, or under a visa-free arrangement.

The system will record travellers’ data, including their name, type of the travel document, fingerprints, facial image, as well as date and place of entry and exit.

While most countries have not brought up the implementation of the system at all in the recent weeks, the Netherlands claims that it is preparing for the new changes for the EES to take place in May.

A spokesperson of the Dutch government has confirmed that the EES system will be implemented at the country’s international border crossings points, which includes the maritime and air border crossing point, as well as the Hoek van Holland, IJmuiden, Schiphol, and Rotterdam airports, according to the EES Regulation.

During its meeting held on January 12 in Tallinn, the eu-LISA agency, also discussed the latest state of play of the Schengen Information System (SIS) Recast, which will come into effect on March 7, this year.

The board has also has appointed Agnes Diallo as the new Executive Director of eu-LISA, whereas Marina Durán Romero as Accounting Officer of eu-LISA, throughout the same meeting.
