Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport has confirmed that it will run a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 during its first full season in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD class next year.
Danny Formal and Kyle Marcelli will be the full-time driver pairing in the No. 45 car, reprising a partnership that won this year’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America PRO title.
It will be the first fully independent GTD effort for WTR Andretti, which is also expanding to a pair of Acura ARX-06s in the GTP class.
This year it partnered with Racers Edge Motorsports to field an Acura NSX GT3 Evo22 in GTD but Racers Edge will not be involved in the Lamborghini program.
As is the case with Lamborghini’s customer team entries in other series, WTR Andretti will receive support from the manufacturer’s Squadra Corse racing department.
“We’re really excited that Lamborghini has come to us and regarded us as a team that is worthy of a factory program,” said WTR Andretti team principal Wayne Taylor.
“Danny Formal and Kyle Marcelli will be doing the full season. We’ve got a long history with Lamborghini with us running four cars a year in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo series, so there’s a great relationship already built.
“Like I always said, everything to do with success in motorsport is to be able to have people you can communicate with and build relationships with, so very excited about that with Lamborghini.”
Forte Racing by US RaceTronics represented Lamborghini on a full-season basis in GTD this year, winning the Motul Petit Le Mans season finale. Iron Lynx provided a GTD Pro entry for the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup rounds.
“We are particularly proud to start the GTD program with WTRAndretti,” commented Lamborghini’s Head of Motorsport Giorgio Sanna.
“We are cooperating with success with Wayne’s team since [a] few years in our Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, supporting talent drivers like Danny and Kyle in their career, so we are very excited to have these drivers in our Huracan GT3 EVO2 starting from Daytona!”
Marcelli and Formal contested a partial-season program in the Racers Edge/WTR Andretti Acura this year, but the 2024 season will mark their first as a full-time pairing.
“It has been three years in the making, first taking an opportunity with WTR to drive the Lamborghini Super Trofeo in the PRO Classin 2021, then winning back-to-back Championships in 2022 and 2023,” said Marcelli.
“It has always been the long-term plan in-house to be back at the top level of the sport. I know the team has been working so hard to put this together and we are just thrilled that it is happening.”
