Galaxy Z Flip renders could have you wishing it will be more affordable - SlashGear Posted: 13 Jan 2020 11:38 PM PST The Galaxy S20 is undoubtedly the focus of a recent flood of leaks but, come February 11, it will be vying for attention with its own sibling. The Galaxy Z Flip, previously known as the Galaxy Bloom and the Galaxy Fold 2, is also set to be announced on the same day and may even launch a lot earlier than the premium "normal" flagship. There's still no solid leak about its price but if the Galaxy Z Flip is as cheap as some seem to make it out to be, the Galaxy S20 could have some tough competition from Samsung's own ranks. Granted, the Galaxy Z Flip won't stand a chance when it comes to a blow-by-blow specs fight. With a year-old Snapdragon 855, only two cameras, and a smaller front camera hiding beneath a punch-hole cutout, the foldable phone will look almost like a mid-range phone beside even the base Galaxy S20 model. That would be missing the point, though, because the Galaxy Z Flip is all about style that you can use. The "Flip" in its name refers to its clamshell design, of course. If these renders from LetsGoDigital's newest 3D artist Snoreyn are even close to reality, that name doesn't do it much justice. The Hideaway Hinge really does look almost invisible and the small notification screen and even the dual cameras work to give it a sleek, minimalist look that perfectly compliments the all-screen design inside. Of course, these are just renders and reality will most likely be a bit disappointing. There will most likely be concerns about the screen's durability and the crease that forms at the fold. Samsung will try to calm those fears by talking a lot about its use of Ultra-Thin Glass or UTG instead of the polyimide plastic or PI it had for the Galaxy Fold. All in all, this doesn't sound like a smartphone that will cost less than $1,000, which should be the starting price of the Galaxy S20's lowest configuration. It will hopefully cost a lot less than the Galaxy Fold's $2,000 but don't keep your hopes up for an extremely affordable stylish foldable from Samsung any time soon. Let's block ads! (Why?) EXO's Chen Announced He's Getting Married and His Fiancée Is Pregnant - Teen Vogue Posted: 13 Jan 2020 10:38 PM PST EXO-L's around the world were treated to some delightful news this morning when EXO member Chen shared two huge life updates: He's getting married to his longtime girlfriend, and she's pregnant and expecting their first child. Chen opted to release a handwritten note to his fans explaining what is going on in his life right now. The K-pop star seemed happy about the news, but also "nervous," according to the letter. "Hello, this is Chen. I am writing this because I have something to tell our fans," he wrote, per Soompi. "I don't know how to start this, and I'm very nervous. Although these words are not enough, I'm writing this letter because I want to honestly tell our fans, who gave us so much love, first." "I have a girlfriend I want to spend the rest of my life with. I was worried and concerned about the situations that would arise as a result of this decision, but I had been discussing with the agency and our members because I wanted to announce the news at least a little bit earlier so I wouldn't surprise you with the sudden news. Then, a blessing came my way. I am also taken aback, as I cannot do what I had planned with the agency and members, but this blessing has given me more strength. I couldn't lose any more time thinking about when or how I should announce this, so I mustered up my courage." Chen's statement concluded, "I'm really thankful to my members for genuinely congratulating me after hearing this news, and I deeply thank our fans for sending me so much undeserving love. To respect their families' opinions, the wedding and everything related to it will be held privately, so we ask fans and reporters for their kind understanding." Chen and his fiancée deserve their privacy during this big transition in their lives, and it's unknown how much information about the wedding and the pregnancy we'll receive from here on out. But EXO's fans on Twitter seem to be expressing their support and love for Chen and his new family, happily shouting about the news on Twitter. Another awful first period. That pretty much describes how the Flyers played for the first half of Monday's wildly entertaining game at the reverberating Wells Fargo Center. At the time, little did anyone believe they could overcome a 5-2 deficit against the mighty Boston Bruins. But they regrouped, scored three unanswered goals to force a 5-5 tie, and won it in a tense, electric shootout, 6-5. Travis Konecny scored the lone goal in the five-round shootout, which ended when Boston's Brad Marchand overskated the puck after gently touching it but leaving it at center ice. "That's pretty funny that happened to him," said goalie Carter Hart, who made a combined 11 saves in the third period and overtime — and four more in the shootout — to help orchestrate the win. "It's happened twice now to me in the short amount of shootouts I've been in. Him and [John] Tavares last year." Again. They continued a recent trend: falling behind early and chasing the game. They fell into a 2-0 first-period hole before Kevin Hayes answered with a power-play goal late in the period. In the last nine games, the Flyers have been outscored in the first period, 18-8, which is not a recipe for success in the Scotty Bowman Handbook. Kevin Hayes, converting a slick feed from Konecny, scored on a one-timer from deep inside the right circle while the Flyers were on a power play, slicing the Bruins' lead to 2-1 with 1:38 to go in the first. The Flyers' defense has been pristine at the Wells Fargo Center this season — allowing a league-low 1.90 goals per home game — but they continued to have breakdowns in the second period as the Bruins built a 5-2 lead. Thirty-three seconds into the second, David Pastrnak, after a bad pinch by Provorov, took a feed from Brad Marchand and made it 3-1 by scoring his league-best 36th goal. Sanheim, aided by Michael Raffl's screen, answered 39 seconds later to cut the lead to 3-2, but Boston then scored two goals in a 2:31 span to make it 5-2. The Flyers, who spent the first two periods allowing odd-man rushes at an alarming rate, fell into a 4-2 hole as Charlie Coyle got behind Robert Hagg and beat Hart from close range. An all-alone Krejci continued the assault, converting a Nic Aube-Kubel turnover to score from out front with 15:39 remaining in the second, giving the B's a 5-2 cushion. The Flyers, however, got two bizarre goals late in the second period to get within 5-4. As he drove to the net against Halak, Sean Couturier (two points) lost control of the puck, but it trickled through the goalie's legs to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 6:48 left in the second. Connor Bunnaman's first NHL goal made it 5-4 with 5:14 remaining in the session. Mark Friedman's point shot deflected off Bunnaman and off Boston defender Matt Grzelcyk and past Halak. (It was Friedman's first career point.) "It's not exactly how I imagined it, but I'll take it," said Bunnaman, who was recalled from the Phantoms on Sunday. "I've been dreaming of this, so it felt good." There were six goals — three by each team — in the wild second period, setting the stage for an intriguing finish. In the second half of the game, "we started to be hard on the forecheck ... and with more zone time, you get more chances," Sanheim said after the fourth two-goal game of his career. The future of public safety services for the so-called police jurisdiction – a 1-1/2-to-3-mile area outside the city's municipal boundaries, which currently receives city police and fire services – will be the subject of scrutiny and discussions for the next several weeks. Perhaps the most crucial of those meetings will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mobile's Government Plaza. A Mobile City Council committee, headed by Councilwoman Bess Rich, will examine a police jurisdiction pull-out at that meeting. The council is expected to vote on the proposal in early February. "My goal (Tuesday) is to allow people to have an opportunity to address the committee and provide information (i.e., documents, presentations) both pro and con on rolling back the police jurisdiction," said Rich, in an email to AL.com. (AL.com file) One thing likely to continue during the meeting is the division between the city and county over their interpretation of the costs associated with the plan. City officials believe that a move to withdraw police and fire services to the area west of Mobile's city limits will save $12 million to $14 million annually. County officials dispute some of the city figures. One key concern is the city's estimate that supplying public services within the police jurisdiction costs $26.6 million annually. County Commissioner Connie Hudson said that she isn't convinced the city is losing the amount of money it claims, and she is hopeful that the city administration can produce details accounting for its estimates. She said that the county's finance director will be at the meeting to make a presentation. Commissioner Jerry Carl said the city also may not be factoring in tax revenues received from online purchases by residents west of the city limits. "That is a young (demographic) out there and I would venture to say that 50-60% of their Christmas was bought on the Internet," said Carl. Hudson said that if the city is arguing that it needs to move more of its police and fire resources into the inner city, then a more detailed discussion about the logistics of such a move ought to be presented. "If they move the resources back into the city, those services have to be replaced," said Hudson. "That cannot be done in a year or two. That has to be phased in. We are talking police and fire protection services. For the county to step in and figure out a resolution to replace those services will take some time." Mobile City Councilman Joel Daves, who proposed the rollback of the police jurisdiction, said he hopes for a "full and robust penetrating discussion" will take place during the committee meeting. "I think we need to get the facts out there," said Daves, noting that the biggest dispute between the city and county is over how much money is spent by the city within the area. "I hope we get to the point where the county and city agree or get close to agreement on how much is spent out there," said Daves. Strategic plan Hudson, meanwhile, said she believes the city should consider a long-term strategic plan to address growth. "I don't understand what the long-term objective of the city is here," said Hudson. "What is the plan? Is this part of a bigger plan? If not, then maybe there needs to be a bigger plan in place. If the city is to grow, let's map out a way for it to happen. Over three decades, the city is gradually losing population." Huntsville is making moves in terms of population. Indeed, the city's population has dwindled to where Mobile is now the fourth-largest city in Alabama behind Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery. An annexation proposal would have made Mobile, at least temporarily, the second-largest city in Mobile. That plan, however, was defeated in November by a razor-thin 4-3 council vote. That vote would have allowed 13,000 residents west of Mobile's city limits to vote on whether they wanted to be added into the city. Daves, who said he would favor a long-term strategic plan, said there has to be a solution to the current problems. He said if the strategic plan is "shorthand for annexation," he said, "we've tried that and it hasn't been successful." Daves said his proposal is about closing a fund gap that is costing the city millions of dollars each year. "There are three possible solutions to closing that gap," he said. "The best of everyone concerned in the police jurisdiction is annexation. But that doesn't appear to be in the cards right now. The worst possible solution is for the citizens of Mobile to continue to provide millions of dollars of unreimbursed first responder service. Any solutions between those two, I'm open to it." Meanwhile, the city of Semmes continues along its aggressive annexation push. The city of more than 5,200 residents added portions of five more unincorporated Mobile County streets to its city's boundaries on Monday. Carl said the latest annexations underscore the activity he's seen from Semmes recently. The city has boosted its public services in recent years and currently staffs a full-time fire department with three stations and 25 employees. The new full-time, professional fire squad phased-out a volunteer department that was assembled when the city was incorporated in 2011. "I keep saying that Semmes has it figure out," Carl said. Iranian leaders facing pressure at home and abroad as public anger mounts over downed plane - CNN Posted: 13 Jan 2020 04:38 AM PST Protests that began as vigils to mourn those who died in the crash quickly turned into mass anti-government demonstrations, with calls for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down and for those responsible for downing the plane to be prosecuted. "Death to the dictator," some chanted in the capital, Tehran, in footage posted on social media. In one video, demonstrators chanted, "Khamenei have shame. Leave the country." Khamenei has been in office for three decades, and there is no limit to his term. Videos circulating on social media showed demonstrators in Tehran coughing and fleeing from tear gas as authorities apparently detained protesters while others shouted for police to release them The Ukraine International Airlines jet that was shot down had passengers from around the world on board, but in Iran, many see the incident as a particularly domestic tragedy. Many people are angry that the government killed so many of its own people -- most of those on board were Iranian nationals and people of Iranian heritage. Some protesters could be heard shouting "we will kill whoever killed our brothers" in video posted to social media that CNN could not independently verify. Image of a unified country Protests have spread to other cities, including Shiraz, Esfahan, Hamedan and Orumiyeh, Reuters reported, exposing widespread discontent with the regime. The angry crowds are a marked difference from the image of a unified country in mourning seen following the death of top commander Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq last week. Following his death, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Tehran clutching photos of the revered and powerful figure and chanting "death to the USA." Widespread reverence for Soleimani, who commanded a cult-like status in the country, had seemingly united Iranians of all political stripes in anger at the US. But at protests over the weekend, posters of Soleimani had reportedly been torn down, according to Agence France-Presse. Security forces were deployed in key areas of the capital over the weekend, including Azadi Square near Sharif University, Enghelab (Revolution) Square near Tehran University, and Ferdowsi Square. Fully equipped riot police were on patrol, accompanied by water cannons and black vehicles that are sometimes used as mobile detention centers. The network announced the release date with a new teaser trailer that includes a series of ominous moments in the near future that spell apocalyptic disaster. It starts with the impeachment of the 45th president, a second civil war breaking out in Russia, ecological disasters around the world, and a few more events that eventually collapse into one mega issue. Show co-creator Jonathan Nolan said at last year's San Diego Comic-Con that the new season was partially inspired by Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, and will focus on a dystopian future.
