GLOBAL MARKETS-World stocks scale record peak on U.S.-China trade deal - Reuters

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 11:25 PM PST

TOKYO (Reuters) - World stocks inched ahead to a record high on Thursday after the United States and China signed an initial deal to defuse their 18-month trade war, though financial markets were wary as a number of thorny issues remained unresolved.

Investors look at screens showing stock information at a brokerage house in Shanghai, China January 16, 2020. REUTERS/Aly Song

MSCI's broadest index of world stocks firmed 0.03% in Asia after closing at record level on Wednesday while its index on Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.13%, with India and Australia hitting record highs.

Japan's Nikkei rose 0.14% while mainland China's Shanghai composite index was almost flat. Pan-European Euro Stoxx 50 futures were up 0.03% and German DAX futures ticked up 0.1% in early trade.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He on Wednesday signed a deal that will roll back some tariffs and see China boost purchases of U.S. goods and services by $200 billion over two years.

"Whether somebody looks at this as big progress or little progress, it is something tangible and so the arrow is pointing in a direction that the market is comfortable with," said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer of Horizon Investment Services at Hammond, Indiana in the United States.

The Phase 1 deal however does not fully eliminate the tariffs while the $200 billion purchase targets, which include energy, farm and manufacturing products, look daunting to achieve.

Nor does it address structural economic issues that led to the trade conflict. Officials say these will be dealt in Phase 2 negotiations, though the differences there are so fundamental that many investors doubt whether any deal will come through.

"U.S.-China tensions go beyond trade and will remain even after the Phase 1 deal signing and during the Phase 2 negotiations, and may accelerate after the U.S. election," said economists at Citigroup Global Markets

"The (deal's) enforcement mechanism allowing unilateral actions essentially implies the risk of a snapback of U.S. tariffs or China's commitments," they added.

On the Wall Street, the S&P 500 closed at a record high of 3,289.3 points, up 0.19%, with gains fairly small after the market has rallied for months on hopes of a deal.

The index was dragged down by fall in financial shares following lacklustre earnings from Bank of America and Goldman Sachs.

"While the trade deal has provided a relief, there wasn't any positive surprises for markets. For shares to rise further, we need more evidences of improvement in the real economy and earnings," said Hirokazu Kabeya, chief global strategist at Daiwa Securities.

U.S. shares are traded above 18 times expected earnings, near their post-2008 financial crisis peak marked at the start of 2018.

DISINFLATION EVERYWHERE

Bond yields dropped as a boost from the trade deal failed to offset pressure from low U.S. producer price inflation data, which highlighted persistently low inflationary pressure.

The price index rose less than expected in December to cap 2019 with rise of 1.3%, lowest since 2015.

The 10-year U.S. Treasuries yield slipped to one-week low of 1.780% compared with a high of 1.900% last Thursday and last stood at 1.793%.

(GRAPHIC: Inflation Image - here)

Weak inflation was evident also in UK where consumer price inflation slowed to 1.3%, its slowest rate in three years.

The data fanned bets the Bank of England will cut interest rates at the end of this month, pushing the 10-year gilts yield to 2 1/2-month low of 0.630%.

The British pound last traded at $1.3047, having managed to recover a tad from its three-week low touched earlier this week.

The Swiss franc held firm, having rising to its strongest against the dollar in over a year and its highest against the euro in almost three years after the United States added Switzerland to its watchlist of currency manipulators.

Washington's decision led traders to think it will become difficult for the Swiss National Bank to intervene to weaken the franc in the future.

The Swiss currency last stood at 0.9644 franc per dollar, near Wednesday's high of 0.9631.

In contrast, the Chinese yuan hovered just below its 5-1/2-month high touched earlier this week after Washington dropped its currency manipulator label on China.

Coupled with the trade deal, warmer ties between the two countries are seen as positive for the Chinese economy and its currency.

The offshore yuan stood at 6.8872 to the dollar, near Tuesday's high of 6.8662.

Other currencies have mostly muted reaction to the trade deal.

Against the yen the dollar traded at 109.93 yen, below its near eight-month peak of 110.22 set on Tuesday.

Investors look at computer screens showing stock information at a brokerage house in Shanghai, China January 16, 2020. REUTERS/Aly Song

The euro stood at $1.1151, extending its recovery from a low of $1.10855 hit last Friday.

Oil prices edged back after touching a six-week trough the previous day on data showing big increases in U.S. refined products and hopes for more Chinese purchases of U.S. oil and gas.

Brent crude futures rose 0.7% to $64.45 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 0.73% to $58.23 per barrel.

UConn erases 2-goal deficit, beats UMaine men's hockey team - Bangor Daily News

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 10:53 PM PST

The University of Maine men's hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals 1:05 apart from Jakub Sirota and Tim Doherty but it wasn't enough as UMaine's road troubles continued on Wednesday night.

The University of Connecticut scored three unanswered goals, including the game-winner by Vladislav Firstov 6:52 into the third period, to deal the Black Bears their sixth consecutive Hockey East road loss, 3-2, at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

It was UMaine's fourth consecutive loss on the road overall. The Black Bears, 0-4-1 in their last five road contests, have managed a meager six goals in that span.

UMaine is averaging just 1.87 goals in league play and only Vermont has scored fewer (1.80) in the 11-team conference.

The Black Bears (10-9-4 overall, 4-7-2 HE) have now scored two goals or less in 15 of their 22 games. UMaine is 1-7-1 in conference road games.

UMaine went into the game with a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) but two of those games were in Orono and the other was in Portland.

"We played a real good hockey game but came up on the wrong end [of the score]," UMaine head coach Red Gendron said. "We had all kinds of chances but the puck wouldn't go in.

The loss could be even more costly because junior left wing Eduards Tralmaks, the team's leading goal scorer with 11, suffered an injury in the first period. He did return to play later in the period but did not play in the second and third periods.

Gendron wouldn't comment on the extent of Tralmaks' injury.

UConn (8-10-4 overall, 5-7-2 HE) snapped a four-game losing streak.

UConn moved past UMaine into seventh place with the win. UMaine is tied for the eighth and final Hockey East playoff position with New Hampshire but UNH has played three fewer games.

Sophomore defenseman Jakub Sirota's first goal of the season, a power-play tally on a shot from the point, and senior center Tim Doherty's 10th goal staked the Black Bears to a 2-0 lead.

Doherty scored with a backhander while he was on one knee.

Ben Poisson and Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup assisted on the Sirota goal and Tralmaks and Mich Fossier picked up the assists on the Doherty score.

Carter Turnbull cut the lead in half with 1:04 left in the first period when he tracked down his own rebound and swatted it home for his seventh.

Alexander Payusov tied it 3:25 into the second period with his fifth goal when Jachym Kondelik intercepted an errant clear by UMaine defenseman Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi and fed him in front.

Firstov broke the deadlock when after he was set up nicely by Jonny Evans and Ruslan Iskhakov. Firstov burst in on Swayman and lifted a backhander past him for his seventh of the season and second game-winner.

"The bottom line was we didn't score enough goals and we gave up too many to win the game. It's as simple as that," Gendron said.

UConn goalie Tomas Vomacka, who entered the game ranked just 68th in the nation in goals-against average (3.52) and 69th in save percentage (.886), finished with 37 saves while Swayman made 23.

UMaine doesn't play again until Jan. 24 when it visits Boston College for the first of two games.

UConn plays a two-game set against UMaine in Orono on Feb. 14 and 15.

Indonesia: UAE crown prince to lead new capital construction - Washington Times

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 10:25 PM PST

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Abu Dhabi's crown prince has agreed to lead a committee that will oversee the construction of a new capital city for Indonesia that is estimated to cost $34 billion, an Indonesian official said Tuesday.

Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said it would be "an honor to play a role in the development of the largest Muslim-majority country," Indonesian Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said in a statement.

The committee will also include Masayoshi Son, the billionaire founder and chief executive of Japanese holding company SoftBank, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who currently runs the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, he said.

"We expected their presence would provide a confidence boost for prospective investors in the new capital," Pandjaitan said.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo met Sheikh Mohammed during a two-day trip to Abu Dhabi that ended on Monday.

Widodo announced last August that Indonesia's capital will move from overcrowded, sinking and polluted Jakarta to a site in sparsely populated East Kalimantan province on Borneo island, known for rainforests and orangutans.

The capital's relocation to a 180,000-hectare (444,780-acre) site almost triple the size of Jakarta will cost an estimated $34 billion. Of that, 19% is to come from the state budget and the rest from cooperation between the government and business entities and from direct investment by state-run companies and the private sector.

Widodo welcomed talks between Indonesian officials and the United Arab Emirates, as well as SoftBank, on the setting up of an Indonesia Sovereign Wealth Fund which will be finalized at the end of this month in Tokyo, the maritime and investment ministry said.

It said the UAE, a federation of seven sheikdoms on the Arabian Peninsula; SoftBank; and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation will participate in the SWF's funding of Indonesian development projects.

The idea to set up the fund came during a visit by Sheikh Mohammed to Indonesia last July, and the UAE has pledged to become the main investor in SWF projects, Pandjaitan said.

During Widodo's visit to Abu Dhabi, the two countries reached 16 business and government deals in which the UAE agreed to invest $6.8 billion through five government-to-government agreements and 11 business-to-business deals, the maritime and investment ministry said.

Jakarta is an Asian mega-city with 10 million people, or 30 million including those in its greater metropolitan area. It is prone to earthquakes and flooding and is rapidly sinking because of uncontrolled extraction of ground water. The water and rivers are highly contaminated. Congestion is estimated to cost the economy $6.5 billion a year.

Mineral-rich East Kalimantan was once almost completely covered by rainforests, but illegal logging has removed many of its original growth. It is home to only 3.5 million people and is surrounded by Kutai National Park, known for orangutans and other primates and mammals.

Indonesia is archipelago nation of more than 17,000 islands, but currently 54% of the country's nearly 270 million people live on Java, the country's most densely populated area.

Trump shows that impeachment will not moderate him - CNN

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 10:25 PM PST

No Constitution, Democratic House, code of accepted presidential behavior, foreign Islamic Republic, common notion of proportionate force, media fact checker or legal precedent is going to rein him in.
On a day that was an apt leitmotif for his administration, Trump was formally accused of abusing power and obstructing Congress when Democrats finally transmitted articles of impeachment to the Senate. He then simply pressed on with the kind of unfettered conduct and violation of governing conventions that that got him in trouble in the first place, showing that for him impeachment might be a stain, but it won't be a lesson.
Partly, it is bravado: Trump is sending a message of defiance, refusing to give a "hoax" impeachment the respect it deserves and showing voters he's doing his job, on Wednesday trumpeting what he billed as a historic trade pact with China.
"They have a hoax going on over there, let's take care of it," Trump told Republican senators who will serve as his jurors at the White House signing ceremony on Wednesday, in front of stony faced senior Chinese officials.
But after a tumultuous week at home and abroad, Trump is also telegraphing to his foes how his presidency will look when he's armed with what he expects to be vindication from the Senate.
And he's posing an implicit question -- what constraints will remain when the Republican-led Senate has done his expected work and voted to block an attempt by the House to eject him from office. What are Democrats going to do -- impeach him again?

Trump tests limits on power

House sends two articles of impeachment to the Senate
Trump's defiance of attempts to examine and restrain his conduct and concept of almost endless presidential authority encompasses the power duels in Washington and his bombastic actions abroad.
A week after a showdown with Iran nearly erupted into a new war in the Middle East, the administration is still defying congressional demands for more information about the rationale for killing Tehran's top general.
Tensions deepened after the administration abruptly canceled briefings on the situation, with little explanation, days after it was accused -- even by some Republicans -- of insulting lawmakers conducting oversight duties.
The Iran crisis has revealed Trump's belief that regular expectations of transparency and the need to explain grave decisions in a time of war do not apply to him. Last week, he told Fox News that he did not think Americans had a right to know the specific targets that the White House says were sized up by the dead Gen. Qasem Soleimani.
Trump also shocked Washington when he said that four US embassies were in the firing line but has presented no intelligence to back up the remark.
Partly to satisfy legal requirements, top officials first justified the strikes by saying that Iranian attacks on US targets were "imminent" and were being actively planned by the Soleimani, head of the elite Quds force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Now, in a sign of the administration's brazen nature, Attorney General William Barr is arguing that the concept of imminence "is a red herring."
Given the furor in Washington over impeachment, his remarks did not perhaps get appropriate attention. But they represent an extremely broad interpretation of the power of the President under the Constitution -- a concept for which Barr is known.
The White House's refusal to regularly brief reporters is another affront to normal transparency. Previous administration's mounted comprehensive public relations strategies before and after military strikes to try to bring along the public and to build support for the President.
This administration has been defiant. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has done the media rounds and appeared at the White House podium with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. But such efforts seem more intended to rebuke critics of the administration's actions and to goad the media than to persuade.
The death of Soleimani was in itself a sign of Trump's refusal to accept guardrails that might have constrained other presidents. The drone strike at Baghdad's airport appeared to enshrine a new principle that targeting senior foreign leaders was now an acceptable tool of US foreign policy. In itself, the President's decision to escalate things reportedly shocked some senior military planners.

Trends echo on Ukraine and Iran

Democrats have new evidence in impeachment case but do Republicans want to hear it?
Trump's approach to the Iran crisis reveals similar characteristics to the alleged pressure campaign in Ukraine that caused his impeachment.
In both cases he wielded power largely unilaterally, unrestrained by experienced foreign policy officials who were purged from his circle for trying to control his wilder impulses. In the case of Ukraine, Trump appears to have used presidential authority for personal political ends. Many opponents believe that his motivation in eliminating Soleimani was also motivated by politics -- a recurring them throughout his foreign policy.
Just as he sees no need to brief members in Congress about the in-depth intelligence behind the Soleimani strike, Trump has no qualms over withholding key witnesses from the impeachment investigation in an aggressive assertion of blanket, absolute executive immunity.
Even his perpetual disrespect for facts and frequent lies are an assertion of power. Trump has shown that when a politician in a democracy is not bound by a nation's common concept of reality, he can open up entirely new avenues he can use to assert his power.
The President also stepped on Congress' power of the purse by allegedly withholding $400 million in military aid granted to Ukraine by lawmakers in order to try to coerce its leaders to investigate his potential political opponent in Joe Biden.
He is barging into similar territory by seeking to divert Pentagon funds to build his border wall that have already been appropriated by Congress for other purposes. The President is considering reprograming another $7.2 billion this year for a similar purpose, five times what Congress authorized, The Washington Post and CNN reported this week.
Trump's capacity to act with such impunity in these cases is a testament to his unchallenged power over his party's grass roots -- a block of support he can leverage to intimidate GOP lawmakers who might think of checking him.
Any Republican politician who lacks their own national power base and who wants a future in the GOP ranks has no political running room to question Trump's behavior in Ukraine or ultimately to support impeachment.
Trump's aura of omnipotence is informed by the lessons of his life in business and innumerable legal scrapes to politics. A barnstorming personality who blasts through restraints and never allows adversaries to take stock of the damage is a powerful political force. Trump's lack of shame at outlandish behavior, refusal to ever apologize and audacity constantly restocks his political capital.
It's one reason why Democrats said they had no option to impeach the President over his off-the-books diplomatic scheme in Ukraine.
"We've always felt a certain urgency about this impeachment, given that the President was trying to get foreign help in cheating in the next election," House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff, D-California, said Wednesday.

Trump knows what's good for him -- politically

China deal and impeachment: Witnessing a surreal 30 minutes in Washington
The way that Trump leads in times of crisis is not just the symptom of an unruly personality. It may also illustrate a shrewd political judgment.
The one thing no one can say about Trump is that he went native in Washington. He has been true to the disruptive, glass-shattering persona that wrecked the most promising field of conservative Republican White House hopefuls in a generation and built an impregnable political base.
The barking authoritarian boss that Trump played on NBC's "The Apprentice" was an attractive image to many heartland Americans furious with politicians of all stripes who simply wanted the Washington establishment torn down.
Trump has bent the presidency to his raucous requirements and refused to obey its behavioral codes fashioned over two-and-a-half centuries.
So, it's unthinkable that Trump will emerge from his impeachment drama chastened. He is instead likely to perceive validation for his conduct, and may consider, since he is branded with a historic badge of honor, that he has not got much more to lose and could shed even more restraints.
With congressional Democrats having played their most important card, the courts could become the last line of constitutional defense.
Trump has repeatedly chafed at restrictions, injunctions and stays inflicted on him by judges -- though the swift clip that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is maintaining in confirming conservatives to the bench could start to change things. Still, one judge recently rebuked the President by writing that "presidents are not kings."
Federal courts have repeatedly frustrated Trump, especially regarding his hardline immigration policies.
Once the impeachment drama finally ends, American politics will coalesce around the looming presidential election. It will be a reminder that the ultimate clash between Trump and accountability will come in November.
Impeachment only happened because voters who apparently favored more presidential restraint handed Democrats the House in midterm elections. They will get their chance to weigh in again on Trump's unconstrained vision of politics again in less than 10 months.

Actress Amber Tamblyn faces backlash after claiming Warren 'told HER truth' in spat with Sanders - Fox News

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 10:11 PM PST

Actress Amber Tamblyn faced a wave of backlash on Wednesday after she defended Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., in her feud with 2020 opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

"She didn't lie. She told HER truth," Tamblyn told a Twitter user who claimed Sanders tried to "smear Bernie" during Tuesday night's Democratic debate in Iowa, adding: "Keep your sexist s--t out of my timeline."

Tamblyn had offered a full-throated endorsement of Warren, dubbing her "the one."

"To the people being harassed, bullied, and talked down to, both in public and behind closed doors, because they believe whole heartedly in the message, momentum, and brilliance that is Elizabeth Warren— Keep going. Keep fighting. She's the one," she tweeted.

WARREN APPEARS TO SNUB SANDERS' HANDSHAKE AFTER DEBATE

On Twitter, many criticized Tamblyn's use of the term "her truth." "No such thing as HER truth, there's only THE truth," one user tweeted.

Warren has accused Sanders of telling her in 2018 that a woman couldn't win the 2020 presidential election. Sanders has repeatedly denied saying so.

"Anybody who knows me knows that it's incomprehensible that I would think that a woman could not be president of the United States," he said during the debate.

Families respond to viral video of abuse - WJHG-TV

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 09:52 PM PST

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - For many mothers, their worst fear is seeing their child hurt.

Damon Becnel is charged with child abuse without great bodily harm and animal cruelty. (WJHG/WECP)

"What he did, what Damon did that night to my daughter will forever, will take years, years of unwinding," said Allison Tringas, the mother of an abuse victim.

Tringas does not have custody of her daughter, but she was outraged when she saw the video of her child being abused.

"When I saw the video for the first time I puked," recalled Tringas.

Tringas tells us her daughter's abuse went on for years.

"My daughter eventually reached the point that she finally installed a video in her bedroom because nobody believed her."

According to Okaloosa County Sheriff's investigators, that video captured the girl being abused, and her dog being threatened with a knife. They say the man in the video is Damon Becnel, who was arrested and charged with child abuse and animal cruelty.

"The whole world will now have a glimpse of what my daughter has lived through," said Tringas.

We reached out to officials at the Florida Department of Children and Families. They confirm three investigations have been conducted regarding Becnel. One in 2018, one in 2019, and one that's currently open.

"It's beyond frustrating, it's beyond frustrating. And you start going who do I turn to? Who can help her? Does his family have that much influence over the judges? Over the sheriff's department? Over DCF? Why isn't anything being investigated," said Tringas.

We reached out to Becnel's family. His father, Tom Becnel, sent us a statement through his public relations agency which reads, "My granddaughter is in a very comfortable, safe home with her two dogs. She is trying to resume a normal life of school and activities. I ask that you give the family the time and privacy that we need to help my granddaughter return to the normal life of a 14-year-old child. The incident that took place before Christmas is not indicative of my family's values or behavior. I hope my son gets the treatment he needs and you will give us the privacy we need at this time to heal."

As for Tringas, she said she wants justice for her daughter.

"I will tell you what, she is one strong, she's my biggest hero," said Tringas.

According to the Chief Assistant State Attorney, Becnel was released on a $4,000 bond.

Court records tell us Becnel has a plea hearing set for February.

Some Democrats disappointed Amash not chosen as impeachment manager - CNN

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 08:25 PM PST

Amash, who left the Republican Party last year, was the only conservative to vote to impeach Trump on two charges: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Since no Republican crossed the aisle, Amash was for Democrats the next best thing in refuting the claim that the third presidential impeachment in US history is just a partisan witch hunt.
The Michigan congressman said on CNN Wednesday there is a "very strong case" for removing Trump from office "if the senators are willing to listen."
He also joined Democrats in pushing for a "full and fair trial" with witnesses, but he said he "never was contacted by any of the Democratic leadership."
"I would have had the conversation with the speaker if she wanted to have that discussion and then we could have talked about the role and whether I would accept that role," Amash told CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper," when asked if he would have been a manager if asked. "But without that conversation, I couldn't say."
A group of freshmen House Democrats had advocated for Amash to be on the prosecution team, hoping he would be able to persuade senators and Americans beyond their party that Trump deserves to be removed from office.
"As an attorney, former Republican, and the only independent member of the House of Representatives, he has articulated the constitutional rationale for impeachment as well as anyone in Congress, and his absence is a missed opportunity for a bipartisan management team," Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who led the effort, told CNN.
Despite the wishes of some Democrats, Pelosi did not consider Amash for the job and said her members are "very, very excited about the managers."
Senate impeachment trial rules: No phones and no talking for senators
In her news conference, Pelosi said her "emphasis" was on "litigators," people who had a "comfort level in the courtroom." The seven House Democrats — Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff of California, Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler of New York, Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Zoe Lofgren of California, Val Demings of Florida, Jason Crow of Colorado and Sylvia Garcia of Texas — also reflect the geographic, racial and gender diversity of the Democratic caucus.
"It would have been great" if Amash had been selected as an impeachment manager, said Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski of New Jersey. "But we are where we are, so — onward."
In December, Amash explained his support for impeaching the President on the House floor, noting he came to his decision "not as a Democrat, not as a Republican but as an American who cares deeply about the Constitution, the rule of law and the rights of the people." He said Trump "abused and violated the public trust by using his high office to solicit the aid of a foreign power, not for the benefit of the United States of America but instead for his personal and political gain."
Amash has been a sharp critic of the President, saying Trump committed impeachable offenses well before it came to light that he pressured Ukraine to damage his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, while holding military aid as leverage.
The congressman not only broke from the Republican Party last year, but also continues to consider a third-party bid against the President. He recently told the conservative media outlet The Dispatch, "Is there any better time to have a president who might be not from either party?"

Asia markets muted after US and China signed a partial trade agreement - CNBC

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 07:55 PM PST

Asia markets saw muted gains on Thursday after the United States and China ended some uncertainties for the world economy by signing a partial trade agreement.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.14% to 23,950.90 while the Topix index was fractionally lower at 1,730.15.

In South Korea, the Kospi index picked up a gain of 0.23% to 2,236.17 as shares of tech giant Samsung Electronics advanced 1.53% and Hyundai Motor jumped 3.48%.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index added 0.37% but the Chinese mainland markets struggled to climb. The Shanghai composite traded down 0.31% while the Shenzhen composite and the Shenzhen component both traded near flat.

Earlier this week, data showed Chinese imports from the U.S. rebounded in November and December.

Australia's benchmark ASX 200 rose 0.6% as most sectors traded higher. The heavily-weighted financial subindex rose 0.9% as the country's major banking stocks advanced.

"The 'Phase-1' deal has been inked, and the most positive aspect of the deal is that this materially diminishes uncertainty around US-China trade relations in the short-term," Vishnu Varathan, head of economics and strategy at Mizuho Bank, wrote in a morning note.

Phase one trade deal

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a partial trade deal with China on Wednesday that takes steps to root out several practices by Beijing that has irked the White House and members of Congress from both parties.

Those include intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers from U.S. firms in exchange for Chinese market access. The deal also details a $200 billion increase in Chinese purchases of U.S. goods over two years.

Still, the deal is a "tentative truce and not a clean slate; and far from a lasting resolution," Varathan cautioned, adding that there are more questions than answers regarding the monitoring and compliance mechanism of the trade agreement. "Provision for 'remedial measures in a proportionate way' is a reminder that risks of regressing are not off the table altogether."

Currencies and oil

In the currency market, the U.S. dollar last traded at 97.202 against a basket of currencies, moving little from its previous close at 97.229.

The off-shore Chinese yuan, traded outside the mainland and not as tightly controlled, changed hands at 6.8877 against the greenback, down from an earlier level of 6.8918.

Both the dollar and the off-shore yuan had "modest reactions" after the world's two largest economies signed the partial trade deal, according to Richard Grace, chief currency strategist and head of international economics at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "There are some medium-term implications that should drive (dollar/off-shore yuan) slightly higher."

Elsewhere, the Japanese yen traded at 109.92 against the dollar, weakening from levels below 109.60 in the previous week. The Australian dollar was at $0.6908, advancing from an earlier low of $0.6899.

Oil prices rose during Asian hours. U.S. crude futures gained 0.69% to $58.21 per barrel while international benchmark Brent added 0.72% to $64.46.

Flood-hit Jakarta residents sue over deadly disaster - The Asean Post

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 07:55 PM PST

Jakarta's governor has been hit with a lawsuit filed by residents of the sprawling city after torrential rain sparked floods and landslides that killed dozens and left thousands homeless, a lawyer said Tuesday.

More than 200 flood victims are seeking a total of IDR43 billion (US$3 million) in compensation in the class action, which was filed Monday in Jakarta district court.

The suit claims Governor Anies Baswedan was responsible for failing to provide the megacity with a proper early-warning system and effective emergency measures to minimise deaths and financial losses.

The city's legal bureau did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"This should serve as a lesson for local government elsewhere to be more aware of disaster mitigation," said lawyer Alvon Kurnia Palma.

"If this happens in Jakarta, where the central government is located, it could happen anywhere," he added.

The disaster caused at least US$72 million in damage and monetary losses, according to business lobby the Indonesian Indigenous Entrepreneurs Association.

Whole neighbourhoods in the capital - a megalopolis home to around 30 million people - were submerged by floodwaters that forced tens of thousands into temporary shelters after torrential rains that began on New Year's Eve.

It was the city's deadliest flooding in years, with Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency saying downpours that sparked floods and landslides were the heaviest in the capital since record-keeping began in the 19th century.

At least 67 people in Jakarta and nearby cities were killed, with floodwaters reaching up to the second floor of some buildings after rivers burst their banks. - AFP

Juan Mata voted Man of the Match in Wolves victory - Manchester United

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 07:55 PM PST

The manager also applauded Mata's attitude, recognising the fact that the no.8 wants more minutes on the pitch.

"He never complains," said the boss. "Of course, he's not happy, as I said last week, that he's frustrated. He doesn't knock on my door and complains and zap the energy of everyone. He makes me understand when I see him training because he trains absolutely fantastic every single day."

In addition to his goal, the 31-year-old had three shots on target, created two chances for his team-mates and had 91 per cent pass accuracy during the win against the visitors from the Black Country.

ギャラクシー・エンターテインメント・コンベンション・センターはプレミアムMICE市場がターゲット - IAG Japan

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 06:37 PM PST

MICE and Tourism around the Worldのインタビューの中で、GICCに関する新情報を明かし、どのようにマカオをアジアの出張客にとって高級な選択肢に位置づけようとしているかについて説明した。

China Will Drive Mobile Spending to Record $380 Billion in 2020 - Yahoo Finance

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 06:13 PM PST

(Bloomberg) -- Mobile app spending and usage hit a record in 2019 and show no signs of tapering off this year as faster cellular connections and more big-name video streaming services come online, industry tracker App Annie says.

China should again prove the biggest driver of consumption on everything from video streaming to games operated by social media giant Tencent Holdings Ltd., propelling spending 23% higher to $380 billion this year, App Annie researchers said. China made up half of all consumer spending in 2019 and was among the fastest-growing markets when it came to time spent on a mobile device. The global average is now 3.7 hours per person per day, according to the researchers.

Among the headline grabbers of 2019 was ByteDance Inc.'s video-sharing platforms including TikTok, which racked up 14.5 billion hours of time watched and grew its audience 200% in the fourth quarter. Nine out of every 10 minutes spent in the app have come from China, App Annie said. Google's YouTube Music racked up even more impressive numbers, growing worldwide active users 870% over the 24 months ending Dec. 19.

"Year 2020 will mark the beginning of a mobile-first decade," said Cindy Deng, managing director for Asia-Pacific at App Annie. "It's imperative that brands start to adapt their strategy to this growing generation, or risk being left behind."

Tinder, Netflix and Tencent Lead Record-Breaking Year for Apps

In the past year, mobile apps accumulated $120 billion of global consumer spending, with games accounting for 72% of that. Advertising brought in $190 billion, said App Annie, forecasting the number to grow to $240 billion this year.

Generation Z -- the cohort born after 1997 for whom mobile has become the first screen -- is fueling the surge. Income from games continued to grow in 2019, when 1,121 mobile titles brought in more than $5 million in earnings, up from 959 two years prior. 139 games went beyond $100 million in revenue for the year, up from 88 in 2017.

But non-gaming apps grew even faster, led primarily by subscription-based revenue models and a rabid appetite for entertainment.

In the U.S., App Annie found Apple Inc.'s iOS platform commanded 79% of non-gaming app revenue versus Google's Android claiming 21%, with the majority on both platforms coming from subscriptions to the likes of Tinder and Netflix Inc.

The use of mobile finance apps doubled between 2017 and 2019, with users accessing such services 1.1 trillion times in the past year. This has been driven by mobile-first countries like China, India and Brazil, while Indonesia, Japan and Russia are growing fastest when it comes to monthly active users. App Annie analysts said fintech apps designed specifically for mobile screens, such as Monzo or PayPay, were outperforming traditional banks because of their greater ease of use.

Entertainment apps also saw a 120% rise in use over the past two years, and in 2019 Netflix was joined by Apple TV+ and Walt Disney Co.'s Disney+ subscription streaming offerings. The competition will intensify as more mobile-centric services emerge: former HP Inc. Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman and film veteran Jeffrey Katzenberg's Quibi, for instance, offers different video perspectives depending on how a phone is held.

Streaming content looks likely to be the big driver for the adoption of 5G networking among mobile users, as App Annie found it growing universally around the globe. On Android phones over the past two years, India streamed nearly 80% more, France and Japan were up more than 50% and the U.S., Canada, and Indonesia all grew by more than 40%. Data consumption on streaming sports was up 80% over the same period, indicating a bandwidth-hungry market that's far from hitting its consumption ceiling.

Visa taps cheaper solar and wind to reach 100% renewable-electricity goal - MarketWatch

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 05:53 PM PST

Financial-services giant Visa says it has met its goal to use 100% renewable electricity by 2020 across its 131 offices in 76 countries and four global processing centers.

Since setting the renewable goal in 2018, Visa V, +1.91%   pursued a sustainable mix of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

Globally, the average costs to generate electricity from solar photovoltaic and onshore wind both declined 13% year-on-year in 2018, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.

"At Visa, we see both a responsibility and an opportunity to make broad shifts toward a sustainable and inclusive future," said Al Kelly, chief executive officer of Visa Inc., with the announcement out Wednesday.

Don't miss: Opinion: Visa and Mastercard shares are more compelling than those of the big U.S. banks

Visa made local renewable electricity investments in markets where the company has major facilities, including four locations in the U.S. and the U.K. that account for 80% of its global electricity use. Specific actions by Visa included enrollments in renewable electricity programs offered by Total Energy in the U.K., Xcel Energy in Colorado, Austin Energy in Texas and Peninsula Clean Energy in the San Francisco Bay Area.

By purchasing 100% renewable electricity, Visa mitigates the greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity the company consumes, reducing its operational emissions from its facilities and data centers by almost 90% versus the company's 2014 baseline.

Visa has been on the Dow Jones Sustainability North American Index since 2017 and a FTSE4Good Index Member, among other distinctions.

Visa shares trade up more than 45% over the past year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.31%  , of which Visa is a component, is up roughly 20% by comparison.

Visa joins PepsiCo Inc. with its own Wednesday announcement that it will use 100% renewable electricity for its U.S. operations starting this year as part of its goal to slash 20% of its greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030. PepsiCo's PEP, +1.72%   operations in nine European countries have already reached 100% renewable electricity. Competitor Coca-Cola Co. KO, +1.25%  also sources 100% renewable electricity at some European sites.

Last year, global retail giant Amazon AMZN, -0.40%  , in large part because of the urging of its own employees, announced that it aims to reach the goals of the Paris Climate agreement 10 years early, and commits to operate on 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

The pursuit of renewable energy may only increase after the decade that just ended was by far the hottest ever measured on Earth, capped off by the second-warmest year on record, two U.S. agencies reported Wednesday.

YouTube prankster appears in Australian court for 'scuba driving' flooded car to liquor store in viral video - Fox News

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 05:22 PM PST

A YouTube prankster who drove a car filled with water to a liquor store and bought beer during a heat wave has appeared in an Australian court to face charges related to the "scuba driving" stunt.

Michael Alexander Philippou, 28, who has operated the RackaRacka YouTube channel with his twin brother Danny, appeared in front of the Christies Beach Magistrates Court in Adelaide on Wednesday over several driving offenses.

Philippou had posted the viral video in January 2019, showing him driving a modified Ford Laser with friend Jackson O'Doherty. The two were seen wearing goggles and scuba diving regulators while driving the sedan during the heat wave.

Philippou was charged with several driving offenses, including driving in a reckless or dangerous manner, driving an unregistered vehicle and failing to wear a seat belt.

T. REX COSTUME STUNS PEDESTRIANS IN VIRAL PRANK VIDEO

"Our car doesn't have air conditioning so we've designed a car which can drive while full of water," one brother said in the video, which has garnered over a million views.

The suspension of the leaking sedan clearly struggled with the weight of water as it drove to a drive-in liquor store where Philippou and O'Doherty bought two bottles of beer and drank them underwater.

Philippou posted a follow-up video in December that showed police arresting him over the stunt.

The video of the "scuba driving" stunt went viral and racked up over a million views.

He was charged with several driving offenses, including driving in a reckless or dangerous manner, driving an unregistered vehicle and failing to wear a seat belt.

On Wednesday, an entourage of supporters surrounded Philippou outside the court, where he told reporters he wasn't worried.

"I'm confident as always," he told Australia's ABC. "I've been ready for this. We've been training hard for this. It will be quick."

Magistrate Susan O'Connor relaxed Philippou's bail conditions to allow him to travel interstate before he's set to appear in court next, in February.

Philippou and his brother have achieved a cult following with their videos and have been named influential cultural figures by the media, ABC reported.

Sanders said talked about 'weather' with Warren in viral debate moment - Business Insider

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 04:22 PM PST

  • Sen. Bernie Sanders told a reporter on Wednesday that he and Sen. Elizabeth Warren were discussing „the weather" during a viral moment the night before.
  • At the end of Tuesday night's debate in Iowa, Sanders and Warren could be seen talking and then walking off without shaking hands as billionaire Tom Steyer looked on.
  • The moment prompted a great deal of speculation amid a growing rift between the two progressive, top-tier candidates.

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday said he was talking about „the weather" with Sen. Elizabeth Warren in a viral moment at the end of Tuesday's debate in Iowa.

There was much speculation about the exchange, in which Sanders and Warren could be seen talking and then walking off without shaking hands as billionaire Tom Steyer looked on.

On Wednesday, NBC News reporter Gary Grumbach asked Sanders what he was discussing with the Massachusetts senator after the debate. „About the weather," Sanders said in response.

Tuesday night's viral exchange came amid a growing rift between the two progressive candidates, which was exacerbated this week when a report came out alleging Sanders told Warren in a 2018 meeting that he did not believe a woman could win the presidential election.

Sanders has vehemently denied the accusation, but Warren has commented publicly on it and contradicted him. „I thought a woman could win, he disagreed," Warren said in a statement.

The topic came up again during Tuesday night's debate, in which Sanders once again denied the allegation as Warren doubled-down.

The Sanders-Warren spat has sparked a great deal of discussion among political commentators and pundits about the difference between harboring the sexist belief that a woman is not qualified to be president versus believing that there is still too much sexism in the US for a woman to be successful in a presidential election.

Amid the disagreement between the two senators over what was said in the 2018 meeting, a number of pundits have suggested that Sanders was expressing concern to Warren that President Donald Trump would weaponize misogyny if a woman won the 2020 Democratic nomination.

The dispute between Sanders and Warren comes as they both vie for supremacy with the Democratic left, or the progressive wing of the party. Up until the past week or so, both had been cordial to one another. But the gloves are off with less than a month until the Iowa caucuses.

Ken Jennings wins ‘Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time’ - Deseret News

Ken Jennings wins 'Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time' - Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — It's official: Ken Jennings is the "Greatest of All Time" — at least when it comes to "Jeopardy!"

The victory comes 15 years after Jennings' initial legendary run on the game show — a 74-game winning streak that totaled $2.52 million.

Now, Jennings is taking home $1 million and a big fancy trophy.

The "Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time" tournament began a week ago, and the prime-time event has drawn an average of 15 million viewers per episode, putting it on a level with the 2019 NBA finals and the 2019 World Series.

From the beginning, "Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time" has predominantly been a tight competition between Jennings and James Holzhauer, who holds the single-game record at $131,127.

That was also the case Tuesday night.

During the first game of the match (one match equals two regular "Jeopardy!" games), Jennings pulled a classic Holzhauer move, going "all in" and wagering all of his money on the Final Jeopardy question.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, Ken Jennings won the "Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time" tournament, taking home the $1 million prize.

It paid off.

The clue: "This area of Greece, home to Pan, is synonymous with a rural paradise; it's a setting for Virgil's shepherd poems the 'Eclogues.'"

Both Jennings and Holzhauer gave the correct response — "Arcadia" — but in a rare move, Holzhauer only wagered a portion of his money. He added $11,381 to his $22,800 total, bringing his Game 1 total to $34,181.

Jennings, who had the lead with $32,800, doubled that score — an aggressive bet that brought his Game 1 total to a staggering $65,600.

Now it was just a matter of maintaining the momentum.

For a while, it looked like Holzhauer was going to pull off a win — Jennings made smaller wagers this time around, and Holzhauer went all in, wagering his $20,200 on the following Daily Double: "This big landlocked African country was surprised to be added to the USA's 2017 travel ban, but was removed from the list in 2018."

In what has been a common play for all contestants throughout the tournament, Holzhauer seemed to be stumped on the answer, waiting until the very last second to blurt out the correct answer: "What is Chad?"

With that response, Holzhauer took a large lead with $40,000 and closed out the game with $44,000 to Jennings' $23,000 and Brad Rutter's $1,400.

It all came down to the Final Jeopardy round. And it was a category all three contestants were likely familiar with: Shakespeare tragedies.

"There's stuff that's disproportionately 'Jeopardy!'" Jennings previously told the Deseret News in an interview where he gave tips about auditioning for the show. "Like they don't ask about opera a lot, but way more than it comes up in real life, so learn the composers of 20 operas. The Shakespeare plays are another manageable list."

Jennings knows his Shakespeare. The Final Jeopardy clue: "He has 272 speeches, the most of any non-title character in a Shakespeare tragedy."

Jennings came up with the correct answer: the villainous Iago. In a surprising move, the BYU graduate played it safe and didn't wager anything, keeping his Game 2 total at $23,000.

All eyes were on Holzhauer.

His answer? "Who is Horatio?"

His wager? All $44,000.

With Holzhauer down to zero, Jennings was officially the winner, with a two-game total of $88,600. Jennings walked over to shake host Alex Trebek's hand before Holzhauer and Rutter lifted him up on their shoulders so he could hoist the trophy in the air.

Throughout the "Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time" tournament, all three contestants paid tribute to longtime host Alex Trebek.

Oh, and if you're wondering about Rutter's response to the Shakespeare clue, he used the moment to pay touching tribute to the longtime "Jeopardy!" host, the constant star of the show all three contestants have expressed gratitude to over the course of the tournament.

"You're the best, Alex," Rutter wrote.

In match 3 of the tournament, Holzhauer lovingly labeled Trebek the "Ghost" — the "Greatest Host of Syndicated TV." Tuesday night, Jennings earned his own new label — the "Goat (Greatest of All Time)" of "Jeopardy!" winners — showing the world that he hasn't lost a step since his incredible run on the show 15 years ago.
