| First US case of Wuhan coronavirus confirmed by CDC - CNN Posted: 21 Jan 2020 11:14 PM PST CDC officials said the United States will be more strict about health screenings of airplane passengers arriving from Wuhan. The patient, who is not being named, is in isolation at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington. He is in his 30s and lives in Snohomish County, Washington, just north of Seattle. He had recently returned from Wuhan.  He arrived at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on January 15, before any health screenings for the Wuhan coronavirus began at US airports. He sought medical care on January 19. The CDC and Washington state are now tracing the people he was in contact with to see if he might have spread the disease to someone else. "We believe the risk to the public is low," said John Wiesman, secretary of health for the state of Washington. The patient became ill four days after arriving in the United States and sought care. Based on the patient's symptoms and travel history, doctors suspected the novel Wuhan coronavirus and sent specimens to the CDC in Atlanta, where tests Monday confirmed the virus. The patient is faring well but is still being kept in isolation out of an abundance of caution, health officials said. Health screenings at more US airportsSoon, passengers from Wuhan to the United States, whether on direct or indirect flights, will only be allowed to land at one of the five US airports doing health screenings. Screenings include a temperature check and observation for symptoms such as a cough and trouble breathing.  Last weekend, the CDC started health screenings for Wuhan passengers arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport. Starting this week, Wuhan passengers will also be screened at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The CDC raised its travel notice for Wuhan, China, from level 1 to level 2 of three possible levels, according to its website. As of Tuesday afternoon, the agency advised travelers to "practice enhanced precautions." The highest level, "Warning - Level 3," advises travelers to "avoid nonessential travel." Person-to-person transmission of Wuhan virusThe Wuhan coronavirus is in the same family as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, which killed more than 700 people in 2002 and 2003, and Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS. To date, the Wuhan coronavirus has infected more than 300 people and killed six in an outbreak that has struck China, Thailand, South Korea, Japan and now the US. It's not known how many of the cases became infected from animals and how many from another person. On Tuesday, the CDC activated its emergency response system in response to the Wuhan coronavirus. The CDC activates this system on a temporary basis to centralize how the agency monitors, prepares for and responds to public health threats. The outbreak started in late December at an animal market in Wuhan, about 700 miles south of Beijing. The virus can jump from animals to people. While there's much to learn about how easily the virus can be transmitted human-to-human, health officials said it appears that it's not spread as easily as some other viruses. "This isn't anywhere near in the same category as measles or the flu," Dr. Martin Cetron, director of CDC's division of global migration and quarantine, told CNN. Jake DeBrusk had a tying goal for Boston early in the third period, and Krejci also assisted on Jeremy Lauzon's first goal of the season. Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots as Boston entered the All-Star break with a win following a 1-2-1 stretch. Mark Stone scored 1:24 into the game for Vegas and Nicolas Hague added his first career goal. Nate Schmidt had two assists for the Golden Knights, who fell to 1-1-1 under new coach Peter DeBoer. | T-Mobile/Sprint decision unlikely to be appealed either way it goes: analyst - FierceWireless Posted: 21 Jan 2020 09:22 PM PST  While the world waits for a judge's decision on whether the proposed merger of T-Mobile and Sprint will be allowed to go forward, analysts at New Street Research say the likelihood that either side ends up appealing is low. The companies' lawyers and those for the 14 state attorneys general that are fighting the merger gave their closing arguments before U.S. District Court Judge Victor Marrero last week in a Manhattan court room. The judge is expected to issue his decision next month. Of course, the decision to appeal depends in part on the reasoning of the judge's decision, but "we think an appeal is unlikely," wrote New Street's Blair Levin in a January 20 investment note. "In the case of the states, we think that if the judge rules against them, the combination of a low likelihood of victory and political considerations probably weigh against appealing." The one exception, he added, would be if the judge bases his opinion on the argument that courts should defer to the judgement of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC), both of which conditionally approved the deal. If the judge were to base his decision on that as opposed to simply determining whether the merger violates the Clayton Act, the states will have a strong institutional incentive to appeal "to overturn what we think would be new and problematic law for the states." As for the companies, he wrote, "We think that if the judge rules against them, he can do so in a way in which the odds of overturning the decision are very low. Moreover, both T-Mobile and Sprint would have business reasons for wanting to have clarity about the prospects of the merger before they, and all the other potential users of spectrum, have to commit to purchasing spectrum in the upcoming CBRS and C-Band auctions." RELATED: T-Mobile/Sprint case boils down to Dish fix - analyst The CBRS auction for Priority Access Licenses (PALs) is set to begin June 25, and the FCC has said it will commence a C-band auction by the end of this year, although it's still working out details, such as how incumbent C-band satellite companies will be relocated and compensated. With the average length of time in the Second Circuit from notice of appeal to a decision being 11.3 months, "it is impossible for the appeal to be over before the CBRS auction, and highly likely an appeal would still be pending as the C-Band auction begins. There are business reasons to continue the appeal, but we believe the reasons on the other side of the ledger are more compelling," Levin wrote. Led by New York and California, the states opposed to the merger filed suit in June to block it on the grounds it's anti-competitive and will harm consumers. When the DOJ announced its approval conditioned on the creation of Dish Network as a fourth competitor, the states cited concerns about the viability of Dish in such a situation. During the trial, they continued to question Dish's ability to essentially replace Sprint, which is already established, while lawyers for the companies argued that Dish has incentives to compete and build out a standalone 5G network. The analysts at New Street, who attended the trial proceedings, have said they think the states are more likely than not to win, although it remains close. Of course, executives at the companies themselves continue to express confidence in their case and they weren't commenting last week about whether they'd appeal if they were to lose. The case has been unprecedented in a number of ways, including the states arguing in opposition to two federal agencies that approved the deal. Although the DOJ and FCC are not parties to the case, they filed a statement of interest last month asking the court to defer to the federal government's view that the proposed merger should be approved. | 'Viral' Explores the Rise of Antisemitic Attacks in the US and Europe (Exclusive) - TheWrap Posted: 21 Jan 2020 04:52 PM PST The upcoming film "Viral: Antisemitism in Four Mutations" shines light on the dark, startling rise of attacks on Jews in the U.S. and Europe… and director Andrew Goldberg gives TheWrap an exclusive first look. Sehingga Siwi harus menjalani pemeriksaan selama lima jam.  Dalam pemeriksaan tersebut, Siwi juga memberikan barang bukti berupa cuitan yang dibuat oleh akun Twitter @digeeembok. Menurut penjelasan Vidi, Siwi diberi pertanyaan mengenai unggahan akun Twitter yang dinilai telah mencemarkan nama baik. Vidi mengatakan, cuitan yang ditulis oleh akun @digeeembok tersebut penuh dengan tuduhan yang tidak benar sama sekali. An ailing Bangladeshi who went missing almost half a century ago has been reunited with his family after a video appeal on Facebook seeking help for his treatment went Viral. Habibur Rahman was a 30-year-old businessman and father-of-four in the northeastern city of Sylhet when he disappeared in 1972 after travelling for work to the port city of Chittagong, his family said. His family, most of whom now live abroad, searched for him for years without success -- until the wife of one of his grandsons in the United States spotted him in the video uploaded this month. Rahman became an itinerant living in Sufi shrines in Moulvibazar district according to his caregiver Rajiya Begum, who has been looking after him for the past five years. He was admitted to a local hospital earlier this month after breaking his arm. Unable to pay for his surgery, Begum asked another patient in the hospital to film a video of Rahman's plight and post it on Facebook on his behalf. The footage was shared and re-uploaded by other users and viewed at least a million times. "She notified us and we rushed to the hospital and found my grandfather alive," Kefayat Hussain, one of Rahman's 13 grandchildren and who lives in Sylhet, told AFP on Monday his sister-in-law's discovery. The 20-year-old said Rahman confirmed his late wife's and other family members' names. "He could not recognise us at first but when he saw my father's elder cousins, he right away knew it was us. He wept like a baby," Hussain said. "He kept asking questions about my grandma and uncles who live abroad." Rahman's family do not know why he went missing, but said after years of uncertainty they were just happy to find out that he is alive. Rahman's third son Jalal Uddin, who also lives in Sylhet and was one-and-a-half years old when his father disappeared, said his "heart bled for long 48 years as I barely remembered my father's face". With 21 victories from their first 22 matches, they're plotting a trajectory to 110 points and could be named champions more than a month earlier than any of their predecessors at Goodison Park. No matter whether you think other sides played better football or won games by larger margins, you can't deny this Liverpool's team objective status as the competition's greatest ever. However, even lifting the trophy with 110 points wouldn't make Liverpool the league's best ever club, because it would take something unprecedented to take that away from Manchester United. It goes without saying that Sir Alex Ferguson never masterminded a season as incredible as Liverpool's, but 13 titles from just 21 seasons is a record that will never be matched. Pricing has also been revealed - it will cost £5.99 per month or £59.99 a year, making it more expensive than the earlier DisneyLife platform. Disney+ launched in the US and Canada in November, where it became the most downloaded app. The new launch date may be an attempt to tackle piracy of shows like The Mandalorian, suggested one expert. The other European countries that will receive Disney+ at the same time as the UK are Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland. The Netherlands already has access as it was used as a testing ground for the platform. In the US, Disney+ costs $6.99 (£5.36) per month. | 6 people dead, almost 300 infected as China confirms Wuhan virus can be spread by humans - CNN Posted: 21 Jan 2020 03:14 AM PST Wuhan, the central Chinese city where the coronavirus was first detected, announced a series of new measures Tuesday, including the cancellation of upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations, expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people. Tour agencies have been banned from taking groups out of Wuhan and the number of thermal monitors and screening areas in public spaces will be increased. Traffic police will also conduct spot checks on private vehicles coming in and out of the city to look for live poultry or wild animals, after the virus was linked to a seafood and live animal market, according to a report by state media outlet the People's Daily, citing Wuhan's Municipal Health Commission. The new measures come after Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered "resolute efforts to curb the spread" of the virus Monday. There are now fears, however, that efforts to contain it are coming too late, hampered by a slow-moving Chinese bureaucracy which failed to put sufficient measures in place in time. Though infections were first detected in Wuhan in mid December, infrared temperature screening areas were not installed in the city's airports and stations until January 14, according to state media. On Tuesday, China's National Health Commission announced that it had received 291 confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus, with 77 new cases reported on January 20. According to the National Health Commission, patients have been identified as having the virus in Hubei province -- where Wuhan is located (270 cases); Beijing (five cases); Guangdong province (14 cases); and Shanghai (two cases). Suspected cases have also been reported in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi and Shandong provinces. The death toll rose to six Tuesday evening, after the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission confirmed that a 66-year-old male and a 48-year-old female died on January 20. It added that 60 new cases were confirmed by the end of Monday in Wuhan city, where a 15-year-old is the youngest to be infected. In the coming days, hundreds of millions of Chinese are expected to begin traveling across the country and overseas as the annual Lunar New Year break gets fully underway, compounding concerns of a further spike in cases. Beyond China, the outbreak has so far spread as far as Thailand, Japan and South Korea. The patient in South Korea told officials there she had developed a fever and muscle pains on Saturday and was prescribed cold medicine by a doctor in Wuhan, before being sent on her way. Despite initial reports that the virus was unlikely to spread between humans, Chinese health authorities have now said there is "definitely human-to-human transmission." One patient is believed to have infected as many as 14 medical staff in one hospital, suggesting the disease can be spread far more easily than previously thought. The specter of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which infected more than 8,000 people and killed 774 in a pandemic that ripped through Asia in 2002 and 2003, has loomed large over discussion of the current virus. During the SARS outbreak, Chinese authorities initially downplayed the dangers and censored coverage, preventing people from realizing the severity of the virus and taking action in time to stop its spread. Zhong Nanshan, an expert with China's National Health Commission who is investigating the Wuhan virus, told state media Monday that while it is not as serious as SARS, the number of people with the disease was "climbing" and suggested that the "death rate at the moment is not so representative." A study by researchers in the UK estimated that the number of infections in Wuhan is still grossly underestimated, with the real number closer to 1,700, based on the spread of the virus to other cities and countries in a relatively short period of time.  Worldwide effortEven before cases were detected in South Korea, Japan and Thailand, the efforts to contain the Wuhan coronavirus were international. Wuhan alone has connections to dozens of overseas destinations, and Beijing and Shanghai have hundreds more. Airports across Asia have stepped up temperature screening of incoming passengers, as have several hubs in the US with connections to Wuhan, including New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. With all indications that the virus has a relatively slow incubation time, however, these efforts may be insufficient to stop its spread. "You cannot absolutely prevent entry into the country of a disease like this. The incubation period is probably a week," Australia's chief medical officer, Brendan Murphy, said Tuesday. "It's about identifying those with a high risk and making sure people with a high risk know about it and know how to get medical attention." He said that while there was no cause for immediate alarm, the true number of cases was likely far higher than currently reported and urged people to be vigilant about potential symptoms. Australian authorities on Tuesday quarantined a man in Brisbane who had returned from Wuhan with possible symptoms of the coronavirus. He will remain in isolation until his symptoms have resolved, Queensland Health authorities said. In the US, the National Institutes of Health is working on a vaccine for the new virus, though it will take at least a few months until the first phase of clinical trials get underway and more than a year until a vaccine might be available. Scientists in Texas, New York and China are also at work on a vaccine, according to Peter Hotez, a vaccine scientist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. "The lesson we've learned is coronavirus infections are serious and one of the newest and biggest global health threats," Hotez told CNN. On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced it would convene an emergency meeting on Wednesday to determine whether the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of "international concern" and what recommendations should be made to help manage its spread.
