Trump's Strike on Iran General May Escalate Attacks on Saudi Oil Targets - Newsweek

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 11:33 PM PST

Oil market watchers fear a new round of Iranian attacks on energy infrastructure following America's assassination overnight of one of Tehran's most senior generals in an escalating tit-for-tat conflict that threatens to send oil prices spiraling.

The Pentagon said President Donald Trump directed a drone strike in Iraq that hit a car carrying Major General Qassem Soleimani, leader of the Quds Force, a foreign unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S.

It followed a chain of recent events beginning with rocket attacks on joint U.S.-Iraqi military installations including one attack that killed an American civilian contractor and injured several service personnel.

Since then, the U.S. conducted airstrikes on an Iranian militia in Iraq and the American embassy in Baghdad was attacked by violent demonstrators orchestrated, according to Washington, by Tehran. Now, Soleimani is dead and Washington advised American citizens to leave Iraq.

In the aftermath of Soleimani's death, oil prices spiked. At the time of writing, both WTI and Brent crude oil were up around 3.5 percent several hours after the drone strike. WTI was $63.35 a barrel and Brent was $68.62.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei pledged to "seek revenge" for the killing of Soleimani, who led the Iranian military support for the Assad regime in Syria's brutal civil war.

Last year, Iran was accused by Washington of attacking several oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran openly seized and later released other tankers it alleged were violating its territorial space.

Washington also accuses Iran of being behind the missile strike in September on the Abqaiq and Khurais oil processing facilities in Saudi Arabia, which temporarily knocked down a substantial source of oil supply to the global market. Iran denied responsibility.

Trump has repeatedly called for the world's oil-producing nations to increase oil supply to push down prices. But his escalation of the conflict with Iran risks greater destabilization of the Middle East—a major source of oil supply—and as a consequence further increases in oil prices.

"This is a seismic event in the region," Professor Jason Bordoff, a former energy adviser to the Obama administration and now director of Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy, wrote on Twitter.

"This is how US-Iran tit-for-tat spirals out of control. Iran's response will be severe & deadly. And certainly may include escalating attacks on energy infrastructure—Abqaiq was just the beginning."

Ilan Goldenberg, Middle East security director at the Center for a New American Security think tank, tweeted: "Don't be surprised if the Iranians launch a bunch of missiles at Saudi and UAE especially at US bases but also oil facilities. They surprised us in September with their accuracy but they purposely tried to keep the damage to a minimum. This time they may not do that."

Alexander Kozul-Wright, a commodity analyst at Capital Economics, told Newsweek that oil prices were rising even before the drone strike.

"This positive momentum could mean that prices remain elevated as a result of the escalation in tensions," Kozul-Wright said.

"Clearly, the price of oil would soar in the event of full-blown military conflict in the Middle East. Here, we suspect that Brent could reach $150 per barrel.

"However, this rally would probably be short-lived as supply networks would adjust and demand would slump in the wake of higher prices. Admittedly, we think that the probability of a proxy war between Iran and the U.S. remains unlikely."

Kozul-Wright continued that "in any event, we think that oil prices will end the year higher based on supply and demand fundamentals."

John Tirman, executive director at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for International Studies, told Al Jazeera that Iran will certainly retaliate although not through a direct confrontation with the U.S. "They will perhaps attack Saudi tankers again, maybe Saudi oil refineries again," Tirman said.

Rapidan Energy views Iran's most likely next targets to be Saudi-owned oil assets: the refineries in Yanbu, the Safaniya oil field in the Persian Gulf, and, once again, the Khurais oil field, S&P Global Platts reported.

The U.S. said it killed Soleimani to prevent further attacks by Iran. "General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region," the Pentagon said in a statement, accusing the Quds Force of responsibility "for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more."

"He had orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months–including the attack on December 27th–culminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel," the Pentagon statement continued.

"General Soleimani also approved the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad that took place this week. This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world."

Fire destroys mobile home in Wilson County - mySA

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 11:17 PM PST

An afternoon fire destroyed an East Side mobile home Saturday as the family was away celebrating a birthday.

The mobile home is a total loss, officials said.

Captain Lawrence Padalecki of Wilson County Emergency Services District 1 said neighbors in the 100 block of Encino Corona Drive noticed the fire after 2 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the mobile home was fully engulfed. Padalecki said it seems the fire had been burning a while before it was noticed. Nobody was inside.

The owners of the home were away for a birthday celebration, Padalecki said.

The cost of damage of the home and items inside was estimated at $180,000 to $200,000, Padalecki said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Jordan Kawaguchi scores between-the-legs goal on his old teammate - Grand Forks Herald

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:36 PM PST

The two were junior hockey teammates in Chilliwack, B.C., where Kawaguchi once pulled off a between-the-legs assist.

But if Sinclair was hoping for a little reprieve or charity from his old friend, he didn't get it.

Kawaguchi scored a stunning goal during UND's 5-2 win over Huntsville on Saturday night, pulling the puck between his legs from behind the end line and shooting it past Sinclair for the go-ahead goal. It stood as the game-winner.

"I think it's something that just happens," Kawaguchi said. "You think about it for that split second and it's just kind of a reaction."

WDAY logo

listen live

watch live

In the handshake line, Sinclair said to Kawaguchi: "You had to do that, hey?"

He did.

On the play, UND forward Grant Mismash hammered a one-timer that Sinclair stopped with his toe. The rebound trickled behind him, but just wide of the net. It continued below the end line, so Kawaguchi didn't have an angle to shoot it straight in.

But the junior from Abbotsford, B.C., quickly picked up the puck, slid it between his legs to get it back on the correct side of the end line and shot it in the net.

"That guy's a special player," Kiersted said. "He did it in Chilliwack. He had an assist between the legs. So, it's just another day for him, I guess."

UND coach Brad Berry said: "High, high end. Those are tough plays, those tight plays when a guy's on your back and you have to make a split-second decision to make that. Not many guys can make that play. His high skill level allowed him to do that."

A Hobey contender?

Kawaguchi may just work his way into the Hobey Baker Award conversation. His resume is piling up.

He's got the team success: UND is 16-1-2 and ranked No. 1 in the country.

He's got the numbers: He's the country's third-leading scorer with 28 points in 18 games, trailing only the Providence duo of Jack Dugan (36 points) and Tyce Thompson (30). He ranks second in the nation in plus-minus (plus-19), trailing only linemate Collin Adams (plus-20). Perhaps his most stunning stat is that he's scored (five times) or tallied the primary assist (five times) on 10 game-winning goals this season.

He's got the character that Hobey voters look for: Kawaguchi was voted an alternate captain by his teammates this season.

And now he's got the signature clip for his highlight reel.

"It's kind of ironic, I was going back and thinking about the last time Huntsville was in here," Berry said. "Drake Caggiula made an unbelievable play to go around a defender and put it around a goaltender. (Kawaguchi) reminds me a little bit of Drake Caggiula as far as how he's making an impact in our program here like Drake did his third and fourth year. I commend Jordan on doing that and hopefully he has some more of that in his bag."

Both Berry and his teammates said they've never even seen Kawaguchi try the move in practice.

"He wouldn't dare," Kiersted said.

But he did it in a game against his old teammate. In fact, Kawaguchi scored three times on Sinclair during the two-game series as UND extended its unbeaten streak to an NCAA-leading 15 games.

"He's a good goalie and a really good guy off the ice," Kawaguchi said. "He's probably one of my better friends from Chilliwack. So, it's nice to get one like that on him, for sure."

On the bench, his teammates and coaches appreciated it.

"You know what's funny about it?" Berry said. "Westin Michaud tried to do it, too, right after, without the success of Jordan. So, we'll make sure both of those go on our video session on Monday."

Kawaguchi now has had three consecutive multi-point games, though none of them came with the attention of Saturday night's performance.

"That kind of stuff," Kawaguchi said, "you just find spots to do it."

Jakarta flooding death toll hits 60 - New Straits Times

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:03 PM PST

JAKARTA: Indonesian rescue teams flew helicopters stuffed with food to remote flood-hit communities on Saturday as the death toll from the disaster jumped to 60 and fears grew about the possibility of more torrential rain.

Tens of thousands in Jakarta were still unable to return to their waterlogged homes after some of the deadliest flooding in years hit the enormous capital region, home to about 30 million.

In neighbouring Lebak, where half a dozen people died, police and military personnel dropped boxes of instant noodles and other supplies into remote communities inaccessible by road after bridges were destroyed.

"It's tough to get supplies in there... and there are about a dozen places hit by landslides," Tomsi Tohir – the police chief of Banten province, where Lebak is located – told AFP.

"That is why we're using helicopters although there aren't any landing spots."

Local health centre chief Suripto, who goes by one name, said injured residents were flowing into his clinic.

"Some of them were wounded after they were swept away by floods and hit with wood and rocks," he said.

Around Jakarta, more than 170,000 people took refuge in shelters across the massive urban conglomeration after whole neighbourhoods were submerged.

Torrential rains that started on New Year's Eve unleashed flash floods and landslides.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said on Saturday that two people were also killed after flash floods and landslides hit a village in North Sulawesi on Friday.

The agency said Saturday the total death toll had climbed to 60 with two people still missing.

"We've discovered more dead bodies," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Agus Wibowo. - AFP

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:03 PM PST

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States-led military coalition fighting Islamic State said early on Sunday that there were two attacks near Iraqi bases housing its troops on Saturday night but that none of its troops were harmed.

The attacks potentially harmed Iraqi civilians, it said.

"The night of Jan. 4, two rocket attacks occurred near Iraqi bases that host Coalition troops in Baghdad and Balad, a total of 13 attacks in the past two months," coalition military spokesman Colonel Myles B. Caggins III said in a statement.

Gophers women beat Yale in hockey on four-goal outburst in second period - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:36 PM PST

The No. 2 Gophers women's hockey team scored four goals in the second period to defeat Yale 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena in the first game of a nonconference series.

"It's good to be back after almost a month away," Gophers coach Brad Frost said. "As you noticed it was a little sloppy there throughout the game, but the second period, being able to get those four obviously big goals, and we were able to continue to apply the pressure."

The first three goals for Minnesota (16-1-3) came in a span of 2 minutes, 24 seconds of the middle period. Sarah Potomak opened the scoring at 6:05, intercepting a pass in the offensive end and walking in from the right side. Her sister, Amy, got the next goal on a rush. Then after Claire Dalton of Yale (7-7) scored the first of her two goals, Emily Oden made it 3-1 on a rebound at 8:29.

Sophomore defenseman Crystalyn Hengler got the fourth goal for Minneota on a shot from the left point at 17:17.

Abigail Boreen made it 5-1 Gophers early in the third on a rebound shot from in front. Grace Zumwinkle, the sixth different player to score for Minnesota, got the final goal. That gave Zumwinkle 14 goals, tying her with Sarah Potomak for the team high.

Sydney Scobee made 14 saves for the Gophers, Tera Hofman 21 for Yale.

"Overall a good start," Frost said.

Trump threatens to hit 52 Iranian targets if Tehran retaliates over top general's death - CNBC

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:33 PM PST

Evan Vucci | AP

President Donald Trump on Saturday warned Iran not to retaliate against the U.S. over the killing of the Islamic Republic's top general, threatening to strike 52 targets if Tehran took revenge.

In a series of Twitter posts, Trump warned Iran that the U.S. has targeted 52 sites "at a very high level and important to Iran and Iranian culture." The U.S. will strike those targets "very fast and very hard" if Iran takes revenge, Trump said.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has threatened "severe revenge" for the death of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad Thursday night.

Trump ordered the airstrike which killed Soleimani, the head of a special unit of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard who was responsible for Iranian military strategy across much of the Middle East.

The general's death in a U.S. airstrike has raised concern throughout the region and the world that already tense relations between Washington and Tehran are now spiraling toward outright war.

Tens of thousands marched in Baghdad Saturday to mourn Soleimani amid shouts of "Death to America." Several rockets hit parts of the Iraqi capital, including the Green Zone where the U.S. embassy is located.

The U.S. State Department has warned American citizens to leave Iraq immediately as the U.S. military deploys another 3,500 troops to respond to threats in the region.

The U.S. and Iranian-backed militias have engaged in a series of escalating confrontations in recent weeks. A rocket attack on an Iraqi military base left an American contractor dead and several U.S. service members injured in December.

In response, the U.S. launched airstrikes against the militia Kataib Hezbollah. Supporters of the group subsequently stormed the compound of the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

Trump held Soleimani personally responsible for the death of the U.S. contractor and the storming of the American embassy compound.

Q&A With Visa's LatAm VP Of Products on the Company's Mobile Payments Strategy - eMarketer

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:17 PM PST

We spoke with Rubén Salazar Genovez, Visa's senior vice president of products and innovation for Latin America and the Caribbean, about how the company is working to further develop the region's mobile payments ecosystem for our recent report, "Latin America Mobile Payment Users 2019: What's Driving Adoption in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Other Markets."

noad

What role are traditional banks vs. fintech companies playing within the region's proximity mobile payment space?

Consumers in Latin America are changing fast. They are constantly reinventing themselves and are willing to embrace the latest innovations. To be able to meet these interests, banks and the payments ecosystem at large need to act with even greater agility, speed and flexibility to accelerate the digital transformation in our region.

In order for this to happen, collaboration is key. By working together with a broad range of partners that tap into the agility of fintechs and the scale of big banks and merchants, innovation will be able to flourish in Latin America.

How important is cash for consumer purchases in Latin America?

Cash is still predominant in the region. Nevertheless, we have a very large opportunity to accelerate the adoption of digital payments—especially through the use of QR codes. QR codes complement other forms of acceptance, such as contactless payments, and help boost the migration of cash to digital payments.

In Peru, we recently launched a new payment solution enabled by Visa Direct that allows customers to "scan to pay" using QR codes. This first-of-its-kind solution in Latin America and the Caribbean will help businesses overcome the infrastructure and interoperability challenges for accepting payments by allowing consumers to make instant payments from their smartphones.

In any case, contactless payments are certainly chipping away at cash payments, but there is still a long road ahead.

noad

What types of purchases do consumers in Latin America pay for with proximity mobile payments?

Contactless payments have been shown to be effective at converting cash to card-based payments, particularly in everyday spend categories such as quick-service restaurants, grocery, vending and parking. This has proven to be true as we see adoption rise in the region.

Public transport is an important catalyst for expanding the use and consumer habituation toward contactless payments. If a commuter pays for their ride on the train or bus twice a day to and from work using contactless technology, that is shown to increase habitual usage of contactless in other categories—like gas, coffee and groceries—based on internal spending data trends we've observed.

Could you elaborate on any recent regional partnerships that Visa has entered into?

Together with NovoPayment, we are delivering frictionless payments experiences for tens of thousands of delivery drivers that work for Rappi, the Latin American on-demand delivery platform. With Rappi, we are also partnering to expand financial inclusion through the RappiPay contactless Visa card, which can be easily topped-up in a number of ways.

As a certified Visa Token Service Provider, YellowPepper is helping us speed up the implementation of tokenized payments in the region, ensuring that nearly any internet-connected device can become a more secure place for commerce.

In Brazil, we recently partnered with MetrôRio to launch our first major open-loop transit contactless solution in Latin America. This solution is scalable and will be crucial for displacing cash and accelerating the adoption of digital payments. Now, transit riders in Rio de Janeiro have a simple way to pay for their fare with a contactless card, mobile phone or wearable device. Within just two months after its launch, MetrôRio has already processed 50,000 contactless payment transactions.

By Sportswriter Wang Haoming

BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Wu Lei's equalizing goal for Espanyol against Barcelona has sparked a wave of praises from media and fans in China.

Wu scored in the 88th minute to earn a 2-2 draw for Espanyol on Saturday as he drove an shot past the Barca goalkeeper Norberto Neto from narrow angle after receiving a pass from Matias Vargas.

"You are a burst of light in the dark! Wu Lei saves his team as a substitute and makes history to score against Barcelona," football website Dongquidi titled an article with the Wu's scoring video, which was viewed by 1.3 million people.

"Wu Lei's goal" has become the top search at China's twitter-like platform Weibo.com, a rare condition for sports news.

Chinese football has been suffering a wave of criticism after the national team lost to Syria 2-1 in the World Cup qualifier, which resulted in Italian Marcello Lippi's quit as head coach in November.

Chinese broadcaster CCTV commentator He Wei wrote in his microblog that Wu Lei's goal brought a rare happiness to Chinese fans in the trough of Chinese football.

"In one of the darkest times of Chinese football, a goal from Wu Lei could spark such joys. Come on, Chinese football!" He wrote.

Wu is the first Chinese player to score against Barcelona in official matches. Chinese news portal Sina said Wu was world famous after the goal.

"Wu Lei became the headlines of Spanish media, he made his name famous all around the world," Sina posted a report as saying.

The goal was the 29-year-old's second this season and fifth since he joined the Spanish club in 2019.

"A magical night, a new year, a good start," Wu said on his Instagram after the match.

Twice the size of Belgium: The scale of Australia's bushfire disaster - CNA

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:33 PM PST

SYDNEY: Skies turned black and ash rained down as fires raged across southeastern Australia on Saturday (Jan 4), threatening power supplies to major cities and prompting the call-up of 3,000 military reservists.

The scale of Australia's unprecedented months-long bushfire crisis has shocked not just locals but the world.

More than 60,000 sq km have been burnt across the country - an area roughly twice the size of Belgium.

In comparison, close to 25,000 sq km of land was burnt in August in the Amazon, the world's biggest rainforest. Almost 8,000 sq km were burnt in California in 2018 in one of the US state's worst-ever wildfire seasons.

"We're in uncharted territory," New South Wales state Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

"We can't pretend that this is something that we have experienced before. It's not," she said.

"Several townships who never ever experienced a threat of bushfire were at threat of being completely wiped out."

Since late September, 23 people have died - 17 from the most populous state New South Wales - with more than 1,500 homes have been damaged.

The latest fatalities were in Kangaroo Island - a tourist haven southwest of Adelaide - when two people were trapped in a car overrun by flames on Friday.

The death toll for Australia's wildlife is estimated to have hit 480 million in just New South Wales alone, according to a University of Sydney study. Experts fear the loss of animal life could be much higher than the estimates.

Strong winds and high temperatures continued to fuel hundreds of fires and cause chaos.

Bushfires took out two substations and transmission lines, prompting authorities in New South Wales to warn that an area home to almost eight million people and the nation's largest city Sydney could experience rolling blackouts.

RECORD TEMPERATURES

Temperature records were smashed, and gale-force winds pounded fire-stricken coastal communities in the two most populous states New South Wales and Victoria.

A state of emergency had been declared across much of the heavily populated southeast and more than 100,000 people were told to leave their homes across three states.

Thousands heeded that call on Friday, abandoning summer holidays and piling into cars that clogged the highways linking southeastern coastal towns with the relative safety of Sydney or larger towns.

Several emergency warnings were issued, and there were fears that one blaze southwest of Sydney could reach the city's outskirts.

Sydney recorded its highest-ever temperature of 48.9 degrees Celsius in the western suburb of Penrith, and the nation's capital Canberra hit 44 degrees Celsius, also an all-time record, a Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said.

Thousands of volunteer firefighters battled the infernos as some residents stayed behind to defend their homes.

Just outside the seaside town of Batemans Bay, a four-hour drive south of Sydney, locals joined forces with firefighters to tackle the blazes.

The only activity in the usually bustling tourist hotspot was at an evacuation centre, where hundreds of locals forced from their homes were sheltering on an open field in tents and caravans.

Mick Cummins, 57, and his wife fled to the evacuation centre when fire ripped through their rural town on New Year's Eve.

"We said this is too tough for us, let's get out. We went to the beach and then hellfire came over the hill," he told AFP.

"I was here in the '94 fires. I thought that was bad. That was just a barbeque" in comparison, he said.

Australia's capital Canberra was ranked as the city with the poorest air quality in the world on Sunday by Air Visual, an independent online air quality index monitor, amid a severe haze caused by the fires.

Galleries and other buildings were closed safeguard public health.

In Cooma in inland southern New South Wales, the fire crisis turned into a flood disaster when a large tower carrying 4.5 million litres of water swept away cars and filled homes with mud.

"First bushfire and now flood, back-to-back disasters," a shaken resident who asked not to be named told AFP.

Lansing native builds bat-mobile for hometown hero - WILX-TV

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:17 PM PST

LANSING, MI (WILX.) A Lansing native is showing off his car making skills.

"We are combining the Tumbler and Michael Keaton's, this is a rough one because it is legos, but Michael Keaton's version of the batmobile," said Aaron Aikman.

Aaron Aikman, best known for his Ghostbusters car, is back in his garage making a batmobile car for a local hero.

The Lansing batman has been saving the day for kids in the hospital since 2016, making an impact on organizations like Make a Wish foundation and the American Cancer Society.

That's why when Batman approached Aikman about building his very own bat-mobile there was no second-guessing.

Aikman says that while it's an expensive process and funds typically come out, of his own pockets, it's for a good cause and believes the kids will love it.

"Should be a recurring car for the Lansing batman, when he drives up to the hospital. Bring the kids a real vision of them getting out of a batmobile," Aikman said.

The bat-mobile will be a mixture of a Dune Buggy and 1985 Oldsmobile Toronado. He plans to assemble it together to make the most realistic version.

"We are combining the Tumbler and Michael Keaton's, this is a rough one because it is legos, but Michael Keaton's version of the batmobile," said Aikman.

He even built a lego version to mimic what the car will look like once it's finished.

"[It's] supposed to represent the jet engine and then the two exhausts of the jet engine," he said.

Even though the replica cars are expensive to make, Aikman says he tries to build it on a budget and that means recycling parts and things you wouldn't typically think of.

"We do use a lot of different items that are donated or thrown away. And this is just wire conduit from a business and we're going to use it to make it look more presentable, more realistic," Aikman said.

Aikman plans to work at least 40 additional hours on the batmobile in the next few months, he says he plans to have it finished by May.

Possible scenarios following the death of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani - TRT World

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:03 PM PST

Regional experts are ruling out the possibility of direct military conflict between Iran and the US but they also expect a strong retaliation from Tehran.

As Iranian military general Qasem Soleimani was killed in a precision airstrike on Friday, ordered by US President Donald Trump, a dominant discourse amongst security experts is that Tehran and Washington are heading towards a prolonged conflict.

Speaking to various experts, here are the possible scenarios that are likely to play out in the near future.

Renewed proxy war in Iraq

Adem Yilmaz, an Istanbul-based expert on Iran, told TRT World that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who wields a strong influence on the country's foreign policy, would want to retaliate against the US by using Iraq as a proxy battleground.

While Iraq's powerful Shia cleric Moqtada al Sadr announced the reactivation of his Mahdi army soon after the US airstrike, Yilmaz said it's an indication that Sadr, who was a formidable rival of the US during its invasion of Iraq in 2003, is now part of Tehran's military plans.

Even if contained, according to a Financial Times analyst, the conflict between the US and Iran is likely to "scatter more sparks across a region deeply scarred by war and turmoil," besides exposing the international oil market to new vulnerabilities as the oil prices have already jumped 3 per cent a barrel soon after the news of Soleimani's assassination was made public.

A measured response

Tehran-based Iranian journalist Fereshteh Sadeghi told TRT World that the consequences of Soleimani's killing will be "felt in a few weeks or months".

"At the moment I do not believe that there will be an escalation against the US within Iraq because the US has already moved reinforcements. An immediate response is not an Iranian way of retaliation," Sadeghi said.

Soleimani was one of the most decorated military generals of Iran and Tehran, according to experts, will take time to move on from his loss and again be as "self-assured" as they have been in the past decade.

Will Iraq plunge into another civil war?

Sadeghi ruled out the possibility of Iraq slipping into yet another cycle of civil war.

"This time there are no Sunni insurgents taking up arms against the central government," she said.

For months, Iraq grappled with furious protests, driven by young people who are frustrated because of a dysfunctional economy, corruption and the pervasive influence of Iran.

With the US airstrikes hitting an Iranian-backed Iraqi militia earlier this week, following with the second strike targetting Solemani, the Iraqi anger has now turned back on the US.

Harsh economic reality

Ankara-based political analyst Ali Bakeer said Iran cannot afford a direct military conflict with the US, in light of its harsh economic reality.

"The Iranians, and Khamenei in particular, underestimated the US response as did the storming of the US embassy in Baghdad. They paid the price," he said.

"I don't believe that Iran is prepared for a direct counterstrike in view of the harsh economic situation, its regional isolation and recent protests against its influence in countries like Iraq and Lebanon. However, an indirect response through its regional allies is always a convenient option."

Authorities warn Australian bushfires developing their own weather systems - CNA

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 06:33 PM PST

MELBOURNE: The bushfires ravaging Australia are generating so much heat that they are creating their own weather systems including dry lighting storms and fire tornadoes.

On Saturday (Jan 4), the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) warned that a fire on the coast was generating its own weather system 287 km south of Sydney.

READ: 'Too late to leave': Bushfires out of control across southeast Australia

READ: First Australian bushfire evacuees land in Melbourne

"A fire-generated thunderstorm has formed over the Currowan fire on the northern edge of the fire near Nowra. This is a very dangerous situation. Monitor the conditions around you and take appropriate action," the RFS said on social media.

The weather conditions are the results of the formation of pyrocumulonimbus clouds. They have been recorded all over the world but as the global climate changes, they may become a more frequent occurrence for Australians, the country's Climate Council said in a 2019 report.

A RFS firefighter was killed on Monday by a fire tornado caused by the collapse of a pyrocumulonimbus cloud formation that rolled over the fire truck he was in.

Shane Fitzsimmons, the NSW RFS commissioner, pointed to that death when asked about the fire-induced weather patterns.

"That extraordinary event resulted in cyclonic-type base flipping over a 10-tonne truck. That is the volatility and danger that exists," he said.

The pyrocumulonimbus clouds are essentially a thunderstorm that forms from the smoke plume of a fire as intense heat from the fire causes air to rise rapidly, drawing in cooler air, according to information from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

As the cloud climbs and then cools in the low temperatures of the upper atmosphere, the collisions of ice particles in the higher parts of the cloud build up an electrical charge, which can be released as lightning.

These can cause dangerous and unpredictable changes in fire behaviour, making them harder to fight as well as causing lightning strikes that could ignite new fires.

The rising air also spurs intense updrafts that suck in so much air that strong winds develop, causing a fire to burn hotter and spread further.

Blues’ three-goal lead evaporates in 5-4 overtime loss to Golden Knights - FOXSports.com

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 06:06 PM PST

LAS VEGAS — It's no secret the Vegas Golden Knights haven't fared well against teams with better records this season.

Saturday, with sheer resiliency, the Pacific Division leaders proved they can beat one of the league's best.

Chandler Stephenson scored in overtime and the Golden Knights rallied from an early three-goal deficit to beat the St. Louis Blues 5-4.

Vegas, which improved to 15-6-3 since Nov. 17 and leads the NHL with 33 points in that span, have laid the groundwork since dipping to sixth in the division but had spent most of the season dominating subpar teams.

While the Golden Knights are 16-6-2 against teams currently outside the playoff picture, they entered Saturday 2-6-1 against the seven teams above them in the standings while being outscored 35-21.

Against all teams that currently would qualify for the playoffs, Vegas is 8-9-4 and has been outscored by a combined 75-60.

The Golden Knights have won four straight — three against teams that would be in the postseason right now — including Saturday's statement victory against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

"It wasn't too much of a statement the first 28 minutes, but after that, we played real good hockey," Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said. "You battle back, you never say never in this league."

Stephenson poke-checked the puck from St. Louis' Robert Thomas, then streaked in on a breakaway and beat Allen with a forehand-to-backhand combo 3:01 into overtime.

"Just kept my momentum from the backcheck and wheeled around the net," Stephenson said.

It was his fifth goal and eighth point in 16 games for the Golden Knights since being traded from Washington on Dec. 2.

The Golden Knights turned things around midway through the second period. Ryan Reaves, Paul Stastny, Nicolas Roy, and Reilly Smith also scored for the Golden Knights to erase a 3-0 hole, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves.

Fleury, who announced Friday he is skipping the All-Star Game later this month, earned his 457th career win and is just one behind the New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist for fifth on the career list.

Alex Pietrangelo, Jaden Schwartz, Oskar Sundqvist and former Golden Knight David Perron scored for the Blues. Jake Allen made 28 saves.

After winning a season-high eight consecutive games, the Blues have dropped three straight and have been outscored 15-8 in the losses.

"This league is so tight," coach Craig Berube said. "You've got to keep winning, you've got to find a way to get points. We got a point tonight. It's a big point."

The Blues lead the Western Conference with 59 points (26-10-7), while the Golden Knights are in second in the West with 54 points (24-15-6).

The game featured a highlight reel for players scoring against their former teams, as Perron had three points (one goal, two assists) — his first points since leaving Vegas after playing for the Golden Knights during their inaugural season in the league.

Stastny, who spent 3 1/2 seasons with the Blues, has 12 goals and 31 points against St. Louis; Reaves notched his first goal against St. Louis; and William Carrier, who was drafted by St. Louis but never played for the Blues, had an assist.

NOTES: Since Jan. 2, 2019, the Blues have the best record (56-20-11) and most points (123) in the NHL. … Gallant and Berube will coach the Pacific and Central Division in this year's All-Star Game. … Jonathan Marchessault was scratched for the second straight game with a lower-body injury. … Rookie Cody Glass took a tumble in the third period and was helped off the ice with what appeared to be a lower-body injury and didn't return. … The Blues are 5-0-3 against the Golden Knights since they entered the NHL in the 2017-18 season and remained the only NHL team that has never lost in regulation against Vegas.

Rose McGowan Iran: Actress defends tweet apologizing to Iran after airstrike kills Qassem Soleimani - CBS News

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 06:01 PM PST

After Qassem Soleimani, one of the most powerful figures in the Islamic Republic, was killed early Friday in an airstrike in Baghdad, actress and activist Rose McGowan tweeted an apology to the people of Iran, sparking heavy backlash. Now, she is defending her statement, saying she simply wants to avoid further bloodshed.

"Dear #Iran, The USA has disrespected your country, your flag, your people. 52% of us humbly apologize," McGowan tweeted Friday. "We want peace with your nation. We are being held hostage by a terrorist regime. We do not know how to escape. Please do not kill us."

She quickly received tens of thousands of replies, many of which criticized her as anti-American. McGowan doubled down, calling the United States "morally corrupt."

"Of course #Soleimani was an evil evil man who did evil evil things," McGowan tweeted. "But…The United States is morally corrupt and acts illegally. It is only logical to appeal to Iran's pride by apologizing."

Trending News

McGowan also tweeted, "I do not side with Iran, but I most definitely do not side with the USA."

The Defense Department blamed Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds military force, for the deaths of hundreds of Americans, and said he was behind recent attacks on coalition bases in Iraq. The strike drew a vow of "crushing revenge" from Iran.

Later in the day, McGowan appeared to backtrack on some of her earlier statements.

"Ok, so I freaked out because we may have any impending war," she tweeted. "Sometimes it's okay to freak out on those in power. It's our right. That is what so many Brave soldiers have fought for. That is democracy. I do not want any more American soldiers killed. That's it."

In an interview with The Associated Press, McGowan said she just wants "America to be better," but does not support Iran over the U.S. She defended her statements, and said they are not anti-American, but admitted that they were unusual.

"So, I just thought I would do something a little strange or unusual ... bloodshed should be avoided if you can," she told AP. "And I kind of just thought, what if I take a really bizarre way around this. A very strange thought, I understand."

Australian fires: Everything we know and how you can help - CNET

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 04:33 PM PST

Australia is on fire.

Saeed Khan/Getty

Australia is facing an unprecedented national crisis, as bushfires tear through rural communities across the nation. Since September, at least 20 people have died and over 1,500 homes have been destroyed. Another 28 people have been confirmed missing after bushfires tore through busy tourist hubs in eastern Victoria at the turn of the new year. The scale of the threat is immense, and fires continue to burn, with authorities calling for people to evacuate their homes as the country braces for another weekend of catastrophic danger.

Australians caught up in the crisis are taking to social media and pleading for help. Entire towns have been flattened as fires snaked through bushland, across highways and up mountains. In New South Wales and Victoria, the most populous states in the country, people tried to outrun the blaze and highways were clogged with cars. In major cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne, a dense smoke has descended over busy metropolitan areas like a blanket. Some regions of the country recorded air quality measurements 20 times above the hazardous level.

The situation is grim. Australians are exhausted and frustrated by a lack of clear leadership. Many have had to flee their homes. With fire conditions getting worse in the coming days, help is required.

Here's what we know about the ongoing fires and a number of ways you can provide assistance from Australia or afar.

What caused the fires?

This is a complex question. Australia is a continent familiar with bushfires, bushfire management and the importance of fires in regenerating the land. The indigenous people who have lived across the island continent for tens of thousands of years have long known the importance of fire management and how it contributes to the health of ecosystems. Bushfires are a well-understood threat, but the fires now burning across the nation have been described as "unprecedented" in their ferocity and scale.

Fires can start in a number of ways -- from carelessly discarded cigarettes to lightning strikes and arson -- but they're fueled by a dizzying amount of factors. A lack of rain and low soil moisture can help enable small fires to grow in size, and coupled with the high temperatures and fierce winds that Australia has experienced in the last few months, these small fires can become huge infernos. In addition, with the fire season getting longer, the window to perform critical hazard reduction burns has decreased, giving fires a chance to really take hold.

The bushfire risk for the 2019 season was well known to Australian firefighting chiefs, who had been trying to meet with Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister, since April, worried that a crisis was coming, but they were constantly rebuffed.

A greenhouse gas cannot start a fire on its own. Bushfires aren't started by climate change, but they are exacerbated by the effects of global warming. The Climate Council, an independent, community-funded climate organization, suggests bushfire conditions are now more dangerous than they were in the past, with longer bushfire seasons, drought, drier fuels and soils and record-breaking heat. The link between bushfires and climate change has become a political football, but experts agree climate change explains the unprecedented nature of the current crisis.

Notably, Australia experienced its hottest year on record in 2019, climbing 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average, according to a report by the Bureau of Meteorology. Rising temperatures increase the risk of bushfire, and in November, Sydney experienced a catastrophic fire danger for the first time ever.

There is also a horrifying feedback loop that occurs when great swaths of land are ablaze, a fact the globe grappled with during the Amazon fires of 2019. Bushfires release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. The gas, which makes up only a small percentage of the total gases in the atmosphere, is exceptionally good at trapping heat. In just three months, Australia's fires are estimated to have released 350 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Experts warn a century or more will be needed to absorb the carbon dioxide released

Now playing: Watch this: On the ground and in the cloud, the fight to save the...

5:36

What areas are affected?

Fires are raging in every state, with some of the greatest conflagrations in NSW and Victoria. The Gospers Mountains fires, in NSW, have burned over half a million hectares, and scientists suggest it could be the largest single-ignition point fire in Australia's history. The total area that's been burned is rapidly approaching 6 million hectares (almost 15 million acres). That's almost seven times the amount of burnt area the Amazon experienced in 2019 and about three times the amount burnt in California's 2018 wildfires.

The Japanese weather satellite, Himawari, captured some stunning images from space of the smoke plumes developing off the south-east coast of Australia. You can see the formation of huge pyrocumulus clouds, a type of smoke cloud often seen during bushfires that can generate its own problematic weather -- including lightning storms.

The Guardian Australia has an excellent interactive map you can use to understand the extreme size of the fires, and the entire fire front, compared to other cities around the globe.

The dust and ash from the fires have spread across the ocean and as far as New Zealand's Franz Josef Glacier. On Jan. 1, images emerged of Franz Josef's snowy mountaintops colored a caramel brown. The distance between the glacier and the bushfire front is about the same as the distance from Boston to Miami.

When will they end?

Another complex question. Predictions suggest they will stretch well into 2020. After all, Australia is only one month through summer and dry, hot conditions persist through March and April. Much-needed rain, which would help alleviate some of the uncontrolled blazes, is still forecast to be months away.

Are koalas at risk of extinction?

An erroneous report in November 2019 stated that the koala, an Australian icon, was "functionally extinct" due to the bushfires burning across NSW and Queensland. Experts do not believe this to be true, but the species -- and many other native Australian fauna -- are under threat as a direct result of the uncontrolled blazes.

Ecologists at the University of Sydney estimate that up to 480 million animals may have perished in the conflagrations, including up to 8,000 koalas. Sussan Ley, Australia's environment minister, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the true extent of deaths can't be fully grasped until the fires have stopped burning and "a proper assessment can be made."

As the fires slither across the nation, it's not only the koala that is in strife -- much of Australia's native wildlife is being displaced. Zoos Victoria has provided a handy guide on how to help.

The crisis in real time

Social media is awash with harrowing images from the firefront, showing communities huddling by the beach as orange, dusty skies obscure the horizon. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House have disappeared beneath a grey haze multiple times in the last two months.

On Dec. 31, a crew from NSW Fire and Rescue station 509 were caught inside their fire truck, south of the township of Nowra, as a fire front descended on the vehicle. Footage from the incident rapidly spread across the web.

Some of the most widely circulated images came out of Mallacoota, a small town in eastern Victoria which regularly sees a huge amount of tourists over the Christmas holidays. On Dec. 31, around 4,000 people were forced down to the lake to avoid bushfires.

Mallacoota residents and tourists were evacuated by two naval vessels on Jan 3.

Incredible footage of a magpie which has started to mimic the sound of a fire truck emerged on Jan. 2.

In New York Magazine's Intelligencer, climate reporter David Wallace-Wells writes that there's been "global apathy" in responding to the bushfire crisis. The New York Times showed clogged highways and roads, cars bumper to bumper, trying to flee the carnage. The Guardian spoke with residents talking in apocalyptic terms, calling the situation they'd found themselves in "Armageddon." Prominent Australian reporter and broadcaster Hugh Riminton called Australia "a burning nation led by cowards."

On Jan. 3 a fire took hold on Kangaroo Island, an important ecological safe haven off the coast of South Australia. Rains helped ease the burden overnight and the state's fire service downgraded the emergency threat level early on Jan. 4, after a quarter of the island was ravaged by the "unstoppable" fire. It is still burning out of control.

Saturday Jan. 4 brought weather conditions that were expected to, and did, "deteriorate quickly." The combination of high temperatures, reaching around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), low humidity and winds creates a dangerous mix of conditions allowing fire to take hold and spread quickly.

Conditions eased on Jan. 5 and as cool air moved through the country, a handful of blazes were downgraded from emergency level to watch and act. There are a number of emergency warnings still in place in both NSW and Victoria.

What about the political response?

A real sense of frustration has been building, from the Australian public, toward the governing conservative Liberal party and the prime minister, Scott Morrison. As the bushfire crisis began to crescendo the first time, Morrison was holidaying in Hawaii but amid public backlash, and following the deaths of two volunteer firefighters, cut his trip short by a day.

There have been allegations within the Australian press and across social media that, somehow, the Greens (a center-left party) are somehow to blame for the extent of the fires because they prevented hazard reduction burning. This has been proven to be demonstrably wrong.

On Jan. 2, Morrison visited the town of Cobargo, which has been ravaged by the fires, and was greeted by angry residents refusing to shake his hand and heckling him from across the street. They were angry -- and they wanted to make their voices heard. One resident, seen in footage shot by Australia's 9News, said she would only shake Morrison's hand if he committed to helping the firefighting efforts. "We are totally forgotten about down here," one resident explained.

Twitter's trending section has consistently found itself flooded with hashtags such as #AustraliaBurning, right next to #dismissthisprimeminister and #ScottyFromMarketing -- a reference by the satirical Australian website The Betoota Advocate to the prime minister's previous time in marketing.

In the US, presidential hopefuls such as Bernie Sanders have been tweeting about the fires, as has singer Bette Midler, who tweeted some choice words for the Australian prime minister to her 1.8 million followers.

Artis, No. 8 Wilbur Cross knock off rival Hillhouse - New Haven Register

NEW HAVEN — One of the teams Wilbur Cross knew it had to beat this winter to be considered among the Southern Connecticut Conference's girls' basketball elite was Hillhouse.

The Governors did just that Friday night, dominating their city rivals from start to finish with a 59-28 triumph before a full house at the Robert H. Saulsbury Gymnasium.

"I didn't need a motivational speech," Wilbur Cross coach Tyrees Thomas said. "This is a rivalry. If I need to give a motivational speech before playing Hillhouse, I don't know what to tell you."

Cross, which was ranked eighth in the preseason GametimeCT.com state poll, improved with 4-2 with the victory. The Governors' only defeats have come to teams among the FCIAC's best in a one-point defeat at the hands of defending Class LL champion Norwalk (53-52) at the buzzer plus a tight loss to perennial power Trumbull (67-59).

"That's how I set the schedule up," Thomas said. "I wanted to challenge our team early and measure ourselves up to get better."

Cross only trailed once in the entire contest, 3-2, and that was for just 27 seconds.

The Governors then went on a 17-5 tear for the rest of the first quarter with April Artis (a game high 19 points) scoring nine points and Dejah Middleton eight to lead the charge.

"We came out with a lot of energy," Artis said. "We usually come out slow but this time we put our foot down."

Hillhouse coach Catrina Hawley-Stewart said the Academics missed a lot of assignments, especially early.

"We have to learn to start the game out stronger and learn defensive assignments," Hawley-Stewart said. We scouted them and told them Dejah Middleton (13 points) is a really good player. Plus, they were aggressive on the boards and got some putbacks. We have to fix that for the next time."

Things got quite a bit sloppy in the second quarter as both teams had trouble putting the ball in the hoop. Rayne Durant had five points for Cross, which took a 26-12 edge at halftime.

The Governors pushed the lead to 24 points, 40-16, in the third quarter with an 9-0 run. Kandi Everette had a pair of baskets to lead the way.

And in the fourth quarter, Wilbur Cross added a 15-1 spurt, to take its biggest lead of the night, 57-25, with 2:17 remaining in the contest.

"Our size was too much for them down low tonight," Thomas said.

Defense was also a key for the Governors all night as they never allowed Hillhouse to go on a big run.

"We were moving good, keeping our hands up and closing out," Artis said.

Hillhouse (0-3) was led by Keyshan Johnson with seven points and Ryan Young with five.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

April Artis, Wilbur Cross junior guard scored 19 points, nine of them in the first quarter.

QUOTABLE

"Since they won the state championship last year and we lost to New London by free throws, we had to push it tonight."

—Wilbur Cross guard April Artis.

Leaving Neverland: Court rules accusers can sue Michael Jackson companies - BBC News

Two men who featured in a documentary alleging sexual abuse by the singer Michael Jackson can pursue legal claims against two of his companies, a court has ruled.

Wade Robson and James Safechuck claim they were abused by the singer in the late 80s and early 90s while staying at his Neverland ranch.

Jackson died in 2009 but his family have denied the claims.

They described the documentary Leaving Neverland as a "public lynching".

A lower court had dismissed lawsuits brought by the two men in 2014 because California's statute of limitations required that claims of childhood sexual abuse be filed before an accuser's 26th birthday.

However a new law, which came into effect on 1 January, extends the timeframe up to a person's 40th birthday.

Both Mr Robson and Mr Safechuck claim they were abused by Jackson from the ages of seven and 10.

Vince Finaldi, the lawyer for the two men, said in a statement following the ruling: "We are pleased that the Court has recognised the strong protections California has put into place for sexual abuse victims under the state's new law extending the statute of limitations."

Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for Jackson's estate, said: "The Court of Appeal's ruling merely revived lawsuits against Michael Jackson's companies, which absurdly claim that Michael's employees are somehow responsible for sexual abuse that never happened."
