Former Rangers player-manager Graeme Souness admits he'd embrace the chance to return to the club in some capacity.

"I'd like to be invited back to Rangers in some capacity but it would only be if the people in charge thought I could help," Souness told Mailsport

"One day I'd like to go and be on the board in an advisory role.

"I'm still very active in what I do. I don't want to be presumptuous or get ahead of myself – but that could be one for the future."

More Than 2000 Americans Have Now Died From The Coronavirus - WUNC

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 12:01 AM PDT

Updated at 9:14 p.m. ET

The United States marked another grim milestone in its fight against the coronavirus on Saturday, when the number of deaths from the virus topped 2,000.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, 2,010 Americans have now died from the coronavirus. The majority of deaths have been in New York City.

The United States reported its first death from the coronavirus at the end of February. On Thursday, the count reached 1,000 deaths. From there, it took just two days for the count to hit the 2,000 mark.

In all, there are now more than 121,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the country, more than any other nation. To combat the crisis, President Trump this week signed a $2 trillion economic rescue package — the largest in American history.

The number of confirmed cases continues to climb in the hardest-hit regions. New York City alone has reported more than 30,000 cases and at least 672 deaths, as of Saturday at 4 pm ET.

Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that the city's medical personnel and supplies will be overwhelmed in roughly a week "if we don't get the help we need."

"This is a race against time," he tweeted Friday night.

As the numbers have grown in New York City, so too have concerns in neighboring regions that the city's residents, in fleeing the virus, may spread it outside the city.

In comments Saturday, President Trump said he is considering quarantining New York, as well as New Jersey and parts of Connecticut, "because it's such a hot area."

Hours later, Trump backtracked, and said that he would instead "issue a strong Travel Advisory."

Globally, the situation continues to worsen as well. The number of confirmed cases worldwide is now more than 660,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The world crossed the 500,000 mark just about two days ago.

The death toll remains highest in Italy, where beleaguered hospitals have been overwhelmed with patients and more than 10,000 people have died in recent weeks. Italy recorded its highest one-day jump in death toll Friday — 969 recorded deaths — though the number of new cases there has begun to slow.

In Spain, authorities have struggled with a surge of their own, with more than 73,000 total cases confirmed as of Saturday evening. Health officials there reported a massive spike in the number of fatalities linked to the virus recently, with at least 832 new deaths reported in a 24-hour span.

The death toll in Spain stood at more than 5,900 as of Saturday evening.

Jakarta extends state of emergency after surge in coronavirus cases - Reuters UK

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's capital Jakarta announced a two-week extension of its state of emergency following the nationwide surge in coronavirus cases, its governor said on Saturday.

Anies Baswedan told reporters on a video conference call that the state of emergency, imposed on March 20 to try to slow the spread of the virus in Southeast Asia's biggest city, would be extended until April 19.

"We're preparing ways to anticipate all possibilities that could happen in the city," Baswedan said.

"We implore people of Jakarta to not leave Jakarta, especially for their home towns."

Indonesia's chief security minister Mahfud MD said on Friday that the government was considering a plan to ban "mudik" - the tradition which sees millions of Indonesians leave towns and cities for their native villages at the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in May.

Indonesia confirmed 109 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, taking the total cases in the country to 1,155, a health ministry official said.

Achmad Yurianto, the ministry official, confirmed 15 additional deaths, bringing the total to 102.

According to government data, a total of 627 cases have been recorded in Jakarta and 62 people have died.

The airline AirAsia Indonesia (CMPP.JK) said in a statement posted on its website on Saturday that it would suspend flights starting on April 1. Domestic flights are due to resume on April 21 and international flights to restart on May 17.

Virus infections top 600000 worldwide, long fight ahead - Pakistan Observer

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 11:01 PM PDT

BERLIN The number of confirmed coronavirus infections worldwide topped 600,000 on Saturday as new cases stacked up quickly in Europe and the United States and officials dug in for a long fight against the pandemic. The latest landmark came only two days after the world passed half a million infections, according to a tally by John Hopkins University, showing that much work remains to be done to slow the spread of the virus. It showed more than 607,000 cases and a total of over 28,000 deaths. While the US now leads the world in reported infections — with more than 104,000 cases — five countries exceed its roughly 1,700 deaths: Italy, Spain, China, Iran and France. "We cannot completely prevent infections at this stage, but we can and must in the immediate future achieve fewer new infections per day, a slower spread," German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is in quarantine at home after her doctor tested positive for the virus, told her compatriots in an audio message. "That will decide whether our health system can stand up to the virus." The virus already has put health systems in Italy, Spain and France under extreme strain. Lockdowns of varying severity have been introduced across Europe, nearly emptying streets in normally bustling cities, including Paris where drone photos showed the city's landmarks eerily deserted. Merkel's chief of staff, Helge Braun, said that Germany — where authorities closed nonessential shops and banned gatherings of more than two in public — won't relax its restrictions before April 20. In New York, where there are more than 44,000 cases statewide, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 passed 6,000 on Friday, double what it had been three days earlier. Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for 4,000 more temporary beds across New York City, where the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has already been converted into a hospital. The struggle to defeat the virus will take "weeks and weeks and weeks," Cuomo told members of the National Guard working at the Javits Center. President Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act on Friday, ordering General Motors to begin manufacturing ventilators. Trump signed a $2.2 trillion stimulus package, after the House approved the sweeping measure by voice vote. Lawmakers in both parties lined up behind the law to send checks to millions of Americans, boost unemployment benefits, help businesses and toss a life preserver to an overwhelmed health care system. Dr. John Brooks of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans remained "in the acceleration phase" of the pandemic and that all corners of the country were at risk. "There is no geographic part of the United States that is spared from this," he said. The European Union has granted Tunisia 250 million euros in aid to help it cope with the economic and social effects of the coronavirus outbreak, EU ambassador Patrice Bergamini said on Saturday in a tweet. Tunisia, which suffers from limited health infrastructure, is fighting to contain the outbreak after it said it had 227 confirmed cases and six deaths. Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh said last week that the government was allocating $850 million to combat the economic and social effects of the health crisis. The International Monetary Fund will disburse $400 million to help the country face the effects of the crisis, finance minister Nizar Yaich has said. Tunisia now expects an economic recession, prompting the central bank this month to cut its key interest rate by 100 basis points from 7.75%. Fakhfakh has said the government cut its growth forecast this year to 1% from 2.7% in part due of coronavirus crisis.–Agencies

Italy coronavirus death toll tops 10,000 despite lockdown - FRANCE 24 English

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 10:01 PM PDT

Issued on: Modified:

The coronavirus toll in Italy shot past 10,000 on Saturday and showed little sign of slowing despite a 16-day lockdown.

Advertising

The 889 new fatalities reported in the world's worst-hit nation came a day after it registered 969 deaths on Friday -- the highest single toll since the COVID-19 virus emerged late last year.

Italy now looks certain to extend its economically debilitating -- and emotionally stressful -- business closures and the ban on public gatherings past their April 3 deadline.

"Is it time to reopen the country? I think we have to think about it really carefully," civil protection service chief Angelo Borrelli told reporters.

"The country is at a standstill and we must maintain the least amount of activity possible to ensure the survival of all."

Italians had begun to hope that their worst disaster in generations was easing after the increase in daily death rates began to slow on March 22.

But the new surge has changed the Mediterranean nation's mood.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told Italians late Saturday to be ready to spend more time cooped up at home.

"If one is being reasonable, one cannot envision a quick return to normal life," Conte said in his latest sombre television address.

Going into debt

The monumental economic toll of fighting the pandemic has triggered a huge row among European leaders about how best to respond.

The southern European nations worst-hit by the virus are urging the EU to go abandon its budget rules.

The bloc has already loosened its purse strings in ways not seen since the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.

But Conte argues that this is not enough.

France is backing a push by Italy and Spain for the EU to start issuing "corona bonds" -- a form of common debt that governments sell to raise money to address individual economic needs.

More spendthrift nations such as Germany and the Netherlands are baulking at the idea of joint debt.

Conte said he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had "not just a disagreement but a hard a frank confrontation" this week about how to proceed.

"If Europe does not rise to this unprecedented challenge, the whole European structure loses its raison d'etre to the people," Conte told Saturday's edition of the Il Sole 24 Ore financial newspaper.

'Critical point in history'

The entire eurozone is expected to slip into a recession over the coming months.

But Italy is facing the threat of a near economic collapse after being the first European country to shutter almost all its businesses on March 12.

Some forecasts suggest that its economy -- the third-largest among nations that use the euro common currency -- could contract by as much as seven percent this year.

It shrank by 5.3 percent of gross domestic product in 2009.

Conte warned that EU leaders were in danger of making "tragic mistakes".

"I represent a country that is suffering a lot and I cannot afford to procrastinate," Conte said.

The energetic 55-year-old has seen his popularity shoot up thanks to a general sense that he has been doing all he could.

A growing number of medics are warning that Italy's fatalities could be much higher because retirement homes often do not report all their COVID-19 deaths.

The number of people who have died from the new disease at home is also unknown.

"This is something very different from the 2008 crisis," Conte warned in the newspaper interview.

"We are at a critical point in European history."

Coronavirus Live Updates: Trump Drops Idea of Quarantining New York Region - The New York Times

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 09:31 PM PDT

Credit...Johnny Milano for The New York Times

As the deadly coronavirus spread across the United States between late January and early March, large-scale testing of people who might have been infected did not happen because of technical flaws, regulatory hurdles, business-as-usual bureaucracies and lack of leadership at multiple levels.

The three federal health agencies responsible for detecting and combating pandemic threats failed to prepare quickly enough, a Times investigation found. Even as scientists looked at China and sounded alarms, none of the agencies' directors conveyed the urgency required to spur a no-holds-barred defense, according to interviews with more than 50 current and former public health officials, administration officials, senior scientists and company executives.

Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, trusted the agency's veteran scientists to develop a test for the coronavirus. But when test turned out to have a flaw, it took the C.D.C. much of February to settle on a solution. In the meantime, the virus was spreading undetected.

Dr. Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, was supposed to help build national testing capacity by approving diagnostic tests developed by the private sector. Yet he enforced regulations that paradoxically made it tougher for hospitals and laboratories to deploy such tests in an emergency.

Alex M. Azar II, the health and human services commissioner, oversaw the two other agencies and coordinated the government's public health response to the pandemic. Yet he did not manage to push the C.D.C. or F.D.A. to speed up or change course.

Together, the challenges resulted in a lost month, when the United States squandered its best chance of containing the coronavirus's spread. Instead, Americans were left largely blind to the scale of a looming public health catastrophe.

President Trump said Saturday night that he will not impose a quarantine on New York, New Jersey and Connecticut but would instead issue a "strong" travel advisory to be implemented by the governors of the three states.

Mr. Trump made the announcement on Twitter just hours after telling reporters that he was considering a quarantine of the three states in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus to Florida and other states.

Later Saturday night, the C.D.C. issued a formal advisory urging the residents of the three states to "refrain from non-essential domestic travel for 14 days effective immediately." The advisory, which was posted to the agency's website and its Twitter account, does not apply to "employees of critical infrastructure industries," the agency said. That includes trucking, public health professionals, financial services and food supply workers.

Mr. Trump, when he said he was considering a quarantine for the region, offered no details about how his administration would enforce it. Speaking to CNN, Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York criticized the idea, calling it "a declaration of war on states."

He also questioned the logistical challenges, as well as the message, such an order would present. "If you start walling off areas all across the country it would just be totally bizarre, counterproductive, anti-American, antisocial," he said.

Mr. Trump's public airing of his deliberations came one day after he signed a $2 trillion economic stimulus package and as cases in the tristate area continued to climbThe specter of a federal quarantine followed a wave of governors who, fearful about the virus spreading further through their states, ordered people who had traveled from New York to isolate themselves for two weeks after their arrivals.

Gov. Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island said Friday that state troopers would begin stopping drivers with New York license plates so that National Guard officials could collect contact information and inform anyone coming from the state that they were subject to a mandatory, 14-day quarantine.

Texas, Florida, Maryland and South Carolina are among the other states that have ordered people arriving from New York to self-quarantine. In Texas, for instance, the authorities said Friday that Department of Public Safety agents would make surprise visits to see whether travelers were adhering to the state's mandate, and they warned that violators could be fined $1,000 and jailed for 180 days.

Mr. Lamont, the Connecticut governor, this week urged all travelers from New York City to self-quarantine for two weeks upon entering the state, but he stopped short of issuing an order requiring it.

An infant who tested positive for the coronavirus has died in Chicago, the authorities said on Saturday. It was the first known death of a child younger than a year old with the virus in the United States, although the authorities in some states do not release details about people who die.

Newborns and babies have so far seemed to be largely unaffected by the coronavirus, but three new studies suggest that the virus may reach the fetus in utero.

"There has never before been a death associated with Covid-19 in an infant," said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. "A full investigation is underway to determine the cause of death." Older adults, especially those in their 80s and 90s, have been viewed as the most vulnerable in the outbreak, but younger people have also died.

By Saturday afternoon, deaths in the United States were close to 2,000, 50 of them in Illinois. More than 3,500 known cases of the virus have been identified in Illinois.

Italy and Spain, which have the world's highest coronavirus death tolls, have reported grim new daily totals: 889 deaths over 24 hours in Italy, and 832 in Spain.

The swelling figures brought the fatality counts in the two countries to about 15,000 — more than half of the deaths reported worldwide.

"We have to reduce to the maximum this mortality," Fernando Simón, the director of Spain's national health emergency center, said.

But the health system in Spain, where the government on Saturday further tightened restrictions on movement, is under strain. Dr. Simón warned that some intensive care units had reached "the limit," while others were approaching their capacities. In the Madrid region, a hub of Spain's outbreak, about 1,400 patients are now in intensive care units.

The surge in deaths was particularly unsettling in Italy, where it had seemed the fatality rate had begun to slow. More encouragingly to public health experts, Italy and Spain have both reported signs that new infections are becoming fewer, although those rates could wobble as the outbreaks progress.

"We are reaching the peak of this curve that worries us so much," Dr. Simón said. "In some areas of the country we have probably already passed it," he added.

Hopes have been more muted in Italy, where the head of the national health institute, Silvio Brusaferro, suggested the country's outbreak "could peak in the next few days."

Even so, he said, "We can't delude ourselves that a slowing down of the diffusion will allow us to slow down social distancing."

The scale of the outbreak in Italy has unnerved people in France, where President Emmanuel Macron offered a fresh defense of a government response that some have deemed insufficient.

"We have absolutely not ignored these signs," Mr. Macron said in an interview with three Italian newspapers. "I dealt with this crisis with seriousness from the beginning, when it started in China."

France has reported 37,575 cases and 2,314 deaths, a one-day increase of 319.

"It's an unprecedented health crisis in at least a century," the French prime minister, Edouard Philippe, said on Saturday afternoon. "As I speak, almost half of humanity is under lockdown, it's literally extraordinary."

Here is how some other countries are responding to the virus:

  • Russia will close its borders starting on March 30, a government order published on Saturday said. The measure will come into force at all vehicle, rail and pedestrian checkpoints, and apply to Russia's maritime borders, the government said. It will not apply to Russian diplomats and the drivers of freight trucks, among others. The country, which has already grounded all international flights, has reported 1,264 coronavirus cases. It closed its longest border, with China, in January.

  • Turkey halted all intercity trains and limited domestic flights and halted international flights on Saturday. Its number of coronavirus cases jumped by a third in a day to 5,698, with 92 dead.

  • Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, continues to cast doubt on São Paulo's death toll from the outbreak, accusing the state governor, without evidence, of manipulating the numbers for political ends. "I'm sorry, some people will die, they will die, that's life," Mr. Bolsonaro said in a television interview Friday night. He said that in São Paulo State, Brazil's economic powerhouse — which has the most cases and deaths so far of coronavirus in Brazil, at 1,223 cases and 68 death — the death toll seemed "too large."

Even as hospitals across New York become inundated with coronavirus cases, some patients are being left behind in their homes because the health care system cannot handle them all, according to dozens of interviews with paramedics, New York Fire Department officials and union representatives, as well as city data.

In a matter of days, the city's 911 system has been overwhelmed by calls for medical distress apparently related to the virus. Typically, the system sees about 4,000 Emergency Medical Services calls a day.

On Thursday, dispatchers took more than 7,000 calls — a volume not seen since the Sept. 11 attacks. The record for amount of calls in a day was broken three times in the last week.

Because of the volume, emergency medical workers are making life-or-death decisions about who is sick enough to take to crowded emergency rooms and who appears well enough to leave behind. They are assessing on scene which patients should receive time-consuming measures like CPR and intubation, and which patients are too far gone to save.

And, they are doing it, in most cases they say, without appropriate equipment to protect themselves from infection.

The paramedics described grim scenes as New York City has become the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, with more than 29,000 cases as of Saturday, and 517 deaths.

Reporting and research was contributed by Neil MacFarquhar, Alan Blinder, Michael D. Shear, Jesse McKinley, Abby Goodnough, Sheila Kaplan, Sheri Fink, Katie Thomas and Noah Weiland,

CDC issues travel advisory for New York, New Jersey, Connecticut - CNN

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 08:31 PM PDT

President Donald Trump had asked the CDC on Saturday to issue the advisory after he had floated the idea of a quarantine earlier in the day.
The CDC said this advisory does not apply to employees of critical infrastructure industries, including but not limited to trucking, public health professionals, financial services, and food supply. These employees of critical infrastructure, as defined by the United States Department of Homeland Security and have a special responsibility to maintain normal work schedules.
The move comes, he said on Twitter, after consulting with the governors of the three states, who will administer the plan "in consultation with the Federal Government." The CDC said that the governors of the states would have "full discretion" on how to implement the advisory.
Trump said in his tweet that a quarantine would "not be necessary."
Trump had said earlier in the day that he was considering a short-term quarantine of "hot spots" in parts of the tri-state area -- New York, New Jersey and Connecticut -- where cases of coronavirus continue to rise.
"We're thinking about certain things. Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it's a hotspot. ... We might not have to do it, but there's a possibility that sometime today we'll do a quarantine, short-term, two weeks on New York. Probably New Jersey, certain parts of Connecticut," he told reporters as he departed the White House for Norfolk Naval Station to send off a Navy hospital ship to New York.
Trump's suggestion comes after the United States this week became the epicenter of the global pandemic, with more than 120,000 reported Covid-19 cases across the country, and more than 52,000 of them in New York state alone. Officials forecast that the apex of the pandemic there is still 14 to 21 days away. But overwhelmed hospitals, in New York as well as across the US, working to treat coronavirus patients and curb the spread of the virus are facing a shortage of supplies and ventilators, a key piece of equipment.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo moves state's presidential primary
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that he spoke with Trump on Saturday morning, but that the two had not discussed a quarantine.
"I don't even know what that means. I don't know how that could be legally enforceable," the Democratic governor said during in a news conference in Albany. "And from a medical point view, I don't know what you would be accomplishing."
"But I can tell you, I don't even like the sound of it," he added.
Later Saturday, Cuomo told CNN's Ana Cabrera that the quarantine sounded more like a lockdown for the New York area, calling a potential move by the federal government "mayhem."
"It would be chaos and mayhem," Cuomo said. "It's totally opposite everything he's been saying. I don't think it is plausible. I don't think it is legal."
Trump, however, earlier said that possible quarantine would be "enforceable" and "restrict travel" from those parts of the tri-state area. He also said any quarantine wouldn't affect truckers from outside the New York area.
"Restrict travel, because they're having problems down in Florida, a lot of New Yorkers going down. We don't want that," he said.
Florida's governor had mandated a 14-day self-quarantine or isolation period for travelers coming to Florida from airports in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. According to media reports, wealthy New Yorkers have fled Manhattan for vacation homes in the Hamptons, the Catskills, the Poconos, Florida and Connecticut.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a call with Trump, the President mentioned the possibility of a quarantine "around the New York City area."
"There's a lot of logistics involved and I think the President is well suited to figure that out," DeSantis said during a Saturday briefing. "Whatever works I think we need to do."
DeSantis said it's not fair to Floridians "to just be airdropping in people from the hot zones, bringing infections with them." He added that New York officials were working hard and doing a great job but people are "dispersing from there."
The surprising rise of Andrew Cuomo
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, responded to Trump's tweet with one of his own, saying that the possible quarantine measures are "unclear" and could cause "confusion."
The specifics & impact of this new directive by tweet are unclear & uncertain. The effect may be more confusion than confidence. Gov. Lamont has been strong & effective in his leadership instructing CT's people to self-quarantine & stay at home if possible," Blumenthal said in a Saturday Twitter post.
As he departed from Joint Base Andrews, Trump said he would speak to Cuomo later about the possible quarantine. And describing the quarantine as something that would be "for a short period of time, if we do it at all," the President also said that he would not close the New York City subway.
Earlier this month, Cuomo had deployed the National Guard and created a 1-mile "containment zone" in New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City, in an attempt to stop a growing cluster of coronavirus cases.
The National Guard helped coordinate delivering meals to those in quarantine and a drive-thru coronavirus testing site was opened.
Cuomo said that the number of new coronavirus cases slowed over the period the restrictions were imposed.
As of Saturday morning, New York had at least 728 reported deaths due to coronavirus and at least 52,318 reported cases -- making it the state with the most in the nation, according to CNN Health's tally.

Trump says he may invoke Defense Production Act this week

Trump also said Saturday that he plans to invoke the Defense Production Act "maybe once or twice" this coming week to ramp up production of needed supplies.
The legislation, passed in the 1950s on the cusp of the Korean War, provides the President with a broad set of federal powers to require businesses to "prioritize and accept government contracts" as well as "provide economic incentives" to ensure the US has the stockpiles it needs to handle an impending medical crisis.
The President on Saturday did not identify which companies or supplies he would use the order to produce, but he did suggest he was facing push back from companies he called "little problem children."
"We're look(ing) at two companies that have not lived up to what they said. I would say they're in the 1% group, okay? And all of a sudden they heard we're going to use it and they're rolling out the red carpet," he said.
The President invoked the DPA on Friday, requiring General Motors to begin making ventilators.

USNS Comfort a 'message of hope and solidarity'

Trump, in his remarks Saturday afternoon in front of the USNS Comfort before it departed for New York, expressed his gratitude to "the dedicated service members who will soon be on the front lines of this fight."
"This great ship behind me is a 70,000-ton message of hope and solidarity to the incredible people of New York," he said.
The Navy hospital ship will not treat patients with coronavirus, but rather provide surge capacity for those with other urgent care needs.
The ship is scheduled to arrive in New York on Monday and begin treating patients on Tuesday, Trump said.
The Navy deployed another ship, the USNS Mercy, to Los Angeles.
Each ship contains 12 fully equipped operating rooms, 1,000 hospital beds, radiology services, a medical lab, pharmacy, optometry lab, a CAT-scan and two oxygen producing plants, according to the Navy.

Cuomo on possible New York quarantine: 'I don't think it's legal' and it would be a 'federal declaration of war' - CNN

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 07:31 PM PDT

"It would be chaos and mayhem," Cuomo told CNN's Ana Cabrera. "It's totally opposite everything he's been saying. I don't think it is plausible. I don't think it is legal."
More than 52,000 of the nation's over 113,000 coronavirus cases have been reported in New York state alone. And officials are forecasting that the apex of the pandemic there is still 14 to 21 days away.
"This would be a federal declaration of war on states," Cuomo said, adding that he doesn't think the President is looking to start a war with states.
Trump says he's considering short-term quarantine of parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel advisory regarding the three states about an hour after Trump announced in a tweet that he had asked the agency to do so, saying that a quarantine would not be necessary.
Trump's announcement came just hours after he said earlier on Saturday that he was mulling a short-term quarantine of "hot spots" in parts of the tri-state area -- New York, New Jersey and Connecticut -- where cases of coronavirus continue to rise.
"I'd rather not do it, but we may need it," said the President, who later tweeted that "decision will be made, one way or another, shortly."
Cuomo noted that a tri-state quarantine would dramatically affect the national economy, telling Cabrera, "I think it would paralyze the economy."
"I think it would shock the economic markets in a way that we have never seen before," he said. "I am not going to close off my borders. Trucks have to come in, food has to come in, mail has to come in."
A record number of Americans filed for unemployment benefits this week, with initial jobless claims soaring to a seasonally adjusted 3.28 million in the week that ended March 21, according to the Department of Labor.
Cuomo went on to say that he thought Trump's proposal is more of a "lockdown" than a quarantine, similar to what happened in Wuhan, China, at the outset of the virus' outbreak.
How much will I receive from the stimulus bill?
Cuomo also said on CNN that he would sue Rhode Island if the state did not roll back a policy of stopping all cars with New York license plates. But the governor expects the two states will be able to work it out "amicably."
"I think what they did is wrong, it was reactionary. I think it was illegal but we'll work it out amicably. I'm sure. No state should be suing police to prohibit interstate travel in any way," Cuomo said.
Trump earlier Saturday said that possible quarantine would be "enforceable" and "restrict travel" from parts of the tri-state area. He also cautioned that any quarantine wouldn't affect truckers from outside the New York area.
"Restrict travel, because they're having problems down in Florida, a lot of New Yorkers going down. We don't want that," he said.
Juliette Kayyem, a former Obama Homeland Security official and CNN analyst, said that Trump's proposed quarantine is "an odd way to view New York" and a "bad attitude about how to fight the virus."
Kayyem said instead Trump should be uniting the country through cooperation. She said, "Let's get a national stay-at-home policy in place. President Trump can actually do that."
The White House has not responded to CNN's requests for comment to ascertain more details about Trump's recent remarks regarding a potential quarantine for the New York area.
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has said that the administration is exploring different legal options for what the mechanism would be.
Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, a medical professional by trade, defended Trump's proposal to quarantine states in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.
Experts are warning coronavirus puts the integrity of the 2020 election at risk. Here's what could happen in November
"If this is what it takes to one, get the needed resources to cities like New Orleans which right now is about to be overwhelmed; and two, preventing it from spreading further. I think it absolutely needs to be looked at," Cassidy, a Republican, told Blitzer.
Meanwhile, Dr. Vivek Murthy, former US surgeon general, said that stay-at-home orders are important. He added that putting a restriction in place would do very little to stop the spread of the epidemic in this country. More than 200 million Americans in 25 states have been told to stay home.
"I think in these situations it is essential to let science and public health guide these decisions," Murthy said. "What we know, from scientists and from public health experts is that a quarantine and a travel restriction at this stage does not make sense. It is not supported by evidence."

Texas Catholic family’s quarantine dancing video goes viral - Crux: Covering all things Catholic

Posted: 28 Mar 2020 06:33 PM PDT

HOUSTON, Texas — When health officials recommended self-isolation to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Ali Hoffman and her parents, Michael and Michele, found themselves quarantined in their Fort Worth-area home.

In their boredom, they donned their "party pants" and filmed a short video of themselves dancing in the kitchen to "Hold My Hand" by Jess Glynne. There's no formal choreography. But lip syncing, slow motion, air drums, and piano and trumpet — as well as floor slides a la Tom Cruise's "Risky Business" dance — all abound. At one point, jazz hands beckon Ali's mother into the frame for her cameo.

Within 72 hours of Ali's March 21 Facebook post, the video went viral, racking up nearly 5 million views and more than 183,000 shares.

But this isn't the first time the Hoffman family went viral online.

Five years ago, a winter storm froze the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Icy roads kept Ali and her parents inside.

Perhaps in an effort to warm up in the frigid temperatures, an impromptu dance party broke out in the family's kitchen. The third youngest in the family of six, Ali recorded and posted a video of the one-take performance to her Facebook account. Since its February 2015 posting, the video, which featured Ali and her parents dancing to "Uptown Funk" by popstar Bruno Mars, has been viewed more than 13 million times.

The irony of their new video's song choice wasn't lost on Ali or Michael.

"It's a fun song to dance to," 29-year-old Ali told the Texas Catholic Herald, newspaper of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, in a phone interview from their family's Carrollton, Texas, home.

"But please don't hold my hand," Michael said, referring to the current health recommendations by authorities nationwide to avoid physical contact to slow the coronavirus spread.

Despite the viral fame, which vaulted all six members of the Hoffman family to prime-time stardom when ABC's "Dance Battle America" showcased the family in 2015, the father and daughter look for the simple joys in life amid a world that is "shutting down" all around them.

The sentiment is the same as it was in 2015: to choose and interject "joy and levity into the situation," Ali said. "If you're at home, don't give into despair and fear."

The father and daughter admit their lives, just like millions around the world, have been rapidly changing.

Ali, youth ministry director at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Carrollton, has been observing self-isolation and social distancing for more than a week. Since her parish suspended all in-person ministry in mid-March, Ali has been hosting online hand-lettering workshops through her project "The Oodles of Doodles" on social media for those staying at home who are looking to pick up a new skill.

The isolation has helped her to take stock of what she truly needs, as well as check on her community of friends and family in a time of social distancing.

The time has "definitely put an emphasis on sacrifice," Ali said. "It really put into perspective. … 'Do I really trust in Jesus?'"

For example, Michael and Michele can't visit their newest granddaughter, who was born March 1, and Ali can't minister in person with the youth she's seen nearly weekly since last August. And Michael, a motivational speaker, has seen waves of event and conference cancellations slow down his typically busy spring schedule.

With regions across the country, including Ali's own Dallas County, going into lock down, Michael finds being sheltered at home timely for the Lenten liturgical season.

"Being (older) than Ali, (Michele and I) have been through a few things. This too shall pass. This is a season," he said. "We'll be able to say that we let the joy shine a little bit. There's no such thing as darkness. … You can't hold it. It doesn't grow. Darkness is the absence of light and in these times, God's asking all of his people to be more light."

While government officials issued orders to self-isolate, Ali and Michael issued their own challenge to other families to post their quarantine dance videos using the hashtag #QuarantineChallenge2k20, which has seen dozens of videos.

Dan Solomon, a writer at Texas Monthly magazine, noticed Ali and Michael's "penchant for dance" and called the challenge "charmingly earnest" during the "strangest days many of us have ever lived through."

"While we all struggle to find ways to center ourselves amid the crisis, let's take a moment to gratefully acknowledge the Hoffman family for their dedication to dancing through this thing," he wrote.

The family remained focused on what they can do despite not knowing what the result might be.

"We're trying to change things and fix things to make it the outcome that we want. We're taking good measures," Ali said. "But I think this just reminds us that we're just human and we're in this together and there's a lot of fear, but there can also be a lot of light in that."

As in 2015, the family's viral videos prompted a flood of messages to Ali's inbox, most of which reflect two thoughts. Ali sees viewers sharing fond, joyful family memories with her, and a greater wish and a deeper need for community and the universal aspect of longing.

The video "does touch on the humanity" of a world in self-isolation, Ali said, noting the other viral videos of Italians and Spaniards singing from their balconies and rooftops during their mandatory quarantines.

And while everyone in the world may not have a balcony for singing, Ali said everyone has a kitchen or a room for dancing.

"Lift up your head from your belly; don't be a belly gazer and keep your head up," she said. "We're all in this together."

GO TO THE BEDSはヤママチミキ、ユメノユア、キャン・GP・マイカ、ココ・パーティン・ココ、ユイ・ガ・ドクソンの5名、PARADISESはテラシマユウカ、月ノウサギ、ナルハワールドに加え、オーディションで昇格したWAggのキラ・メイを含む4名で活動していくこととなった。GO TO THE BEDSのドクソンは「皆さんはじめまして。我々この度、GO TO THE BEDSとして活動させていただきます。

GO TO THE BEDSのココ・パーティン・ココは渡辺から「お前、ここで落ちたな」と言われ、「そうなんですよ。

New trailers: Killing Eve, Upload, Murder House Flip, and more - The Verge

I'd completely expected to be writing a note this week about how the COVID-19 pandemic has largely shut down trailer production, but it turns out, my assumption was wrong. While things have certainly slowed down, streaming services are almost singlehandedly keeping up the new releases. If anything, this is a great moment for them to debut a new show or series since everyone is stuck indoors.

That said, we'll see how long this lasts. Productions are being shut down for health reasons, and it seems like every major movie coming out in the next couple of months is being delayed. So there may come a point where the backlog of content thins out. I certainly suspect it'll be a bit before we see any trailers for tentpole films.

For now, it's a great moment to catch up on some old movies you haven't watched in a while or check out a show you never got around to. My wife and I are now nearly a season into The Sopranos, something we newly have the time to spend watching through. Other than the occasionally strange '90s music choices, it's pretty good.

Check out 11 trailers from this week and last week below.

Killing Eve

While I've heard that the show's second season didn't live up to its much-loved first run, this teaser for season three of Killing Eve looks wonderfully stylized, fun, and dramatic. The show returns April 12th.

#blackAF

Black-ish creator Kenya Barris has a new comedy series coming to Netflix about life as a successful black artist in Hollywood. Barris stars as a fictionalized version of himself, with Rashida Jones playing his wife. From just the first moment of this trailer, it seems like the show is off to a strong start. It debuts April 17th.

Tigertail

Master of None co-creator Alan Yang makes his feature debut with Tigertail, a beautifully shot film about a Taiwanese factory worker moving to America. It comes to Netflix on April 10th.

Upload

Greg Daniels, who led the US version of The Office, is back with a new sitcom for Amazon. Upload is about people who live in a digital "afterlife" after having their consciousness uploaded pre-death. So far, it mostly looks like an excuse to make some pretty low-hanging tech jokes (hilarious, there are in-app purchases...). The show debuts May 1st.

The Great

Hulu has a ridiculous looking period piece comedy coming up that stars Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great. It's hard not to think of The Favourite while watching this, but that's not a bad thing — the series comes from one of the film's co-writers. The show debuts May 15th.

Defending Jacob

Chris Evans plays a father whose kid is accused of murder in this upcoming Apple TV Plus series. It's based on a crime novel, and yeah... I just went ahead and read the entire synopsis on Wikipedia to find out if he did it or not. The show debuts April 24th.

Run

The basic premise of Run is super twee — two exes follow through on an old agreement to drop everything, reunite, and run away together if their lives get boring — but the actual execution looks surprisingly fun and lively. It comes out April 12th.

The Willoughbys

Netflix is turning Lois Lowry's The Willoughbys into an animated film, and while it looks like the movie is filled with pretty conventional kids humor, the animation has an intricate stop motion-esque look to it. It comes out April 22nd.

Bad Education

Even though Netflix has made straight-to-streaming films a totally normal thing, I'm still a little skeptical about movies that go straight to HBO. But all that said: I'm very into this trailer for Bad Education, which is based on a real story about a beloved school leader whose years of theft starts to become exposed. It comes out April 25th.

Most Dangerous Game

I'm fully obsessed with watching Quibi trailers in a "let's see just how much of a mess this is gonna be" kind of way. Most Dangerous Game is a movie "in chapters" up to 10 minutes long. There are two big stars in the lead, and despite my assumptions, it looks like a pretty altogether normal action movie. It comes to Quibi on April 6th, when the service launches.

Murder House Flip

Speaking of Quibi... here's the trailer for what is likely its altogether most bonkers show. I absolutely hate that this is probably going to be its biggest hit.

Johnny Depp's Defamation Lawsuit Against Ex-Wife Amber Heard Can Continue, Judge Rules - The Daily Wire

Johnny Depp's Defamation Lawsuit Against Ex-Wife Amber Heard Can Continue, Judge Rules - The Daily Wire

In December 2018, actress Amber Heard published an article in The Washington Post alleging her ex-husband Johnny Depp (whom she didn't name) had assaulted her. Depp sued Heard for defamation, alleging he was the one who had been assaulted.

As with most lawsuits, Heard's lawyers attempted to get Depp's dismissed, but a Virginia judge on Friday denied Heard's motion to dismiss, allowing the lawsuit to proceed.

Variety reported that "Judge Bruce D. White ruled on Friday that Depp can proceed under the theory that Heard's statements clearly implied that Depp had assaulted her."

"Plaintiff has pleaded circumstances that would reasonably cause three of the four statements at issue to convey the alleged defamatory meaning that Mr. Depp abused Ms. Heard, and this alleged meaning is in fact defamatory," White wrote in his ruling.

As The Daily Wire previously reported, Depp's lawsuit alleged that: "Heard was the serial abuser in the relationship, and provided '87 newly discovered surveillance videos, 17 sworn eyewitness statements, audio tape, photographs, and other evidence' to prove he was the real victim. One of the testimonies comes from Trinity Esparza, who was the concierge at the penthouse where Heard claims Depp hit her in the face. Esparza now questions how Heard received the mark on her face she claimed was from Depp, after reviewing surveillance footage from three days later, when Heard's sister Whitney pretended to punch her in the face, according to court documents."

"In the surveillance video, Ms. Esparza testified under oath that she saw Whitney Heard pretend to punch her sister in the face. Then Ms. Heard, [a friend], and Whitney Heard all laughed," the court documents state.

In another instance, Heard started screaming, "Stop hitting me, Johnny," unaware that Depp's security team was nearby to witness the hoax.

In February, The Daily Wire's Paul Bois reported on audio of Heard admitting that she had hit Depp, but told him to "grow the f**k up" and calling him "a baby" for getting upset that she hit him.

Depp alleged in his lawsuit that Heard used the #MeToo movement and her claims against Depp to further her career and that after she made her allegations, she "became a darling of the #MeToo movement, was the first actress named a Human Rights Champion of the United Nations Human Rights Office, was appointed ambassador on women's rights at the American Civil Liberties Union, and was hired by L'Oreal Paris as its global spokesperson."

In mid-March, three prominent actresses – including two who had previous romantic relationships with Depp – came forward to defend him against allegations that he was a domestic abuser. One of the women was Vanessa Pardis, who was in a relationship with Depp for fourteen years and is the mother of his two children. Pardis called Heard's allegations "false facts."

"I have seen that these outrageous statements have been really distressing, and also caused damage to his career because unfortunately, people have gone on believing these false facts," she wrote. "This is so upsetting as he has helped so many persons in his personal and professional life, with kindness and generosity."
