Avalanche ride 3-goal 2nd period to 5-3 win over Blues - Yahoo Sports

DENVER (AP) -- Cale Makar refused to make too big of deal out of his milestone moment.

Sure, he's ''honored and stuff'' after breaking the Colorado franchise record for most goals by a rookie defenseman.

''But it's not something that I'm going to go home and celebrate,'' Makar said.

This win, now that's celebration-worthy.

Makar and Andre Burakovsky scored 22 seconds apart in the second period to chase All-Star goaltender Jordan Binnington from the game and the Avalanche held on to beat the St. Louis Blues 5-3 on Saturday.

The Avalanche used a three-goal middle period to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 advantage. Tyson Jost also scored in the period. Nathan MacKinnon added a goal in the first and Gabriel Landeskog clinched it with an empty-netter against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

''Everybody's playing their game and I think we're playing confident as a team right now,'' Makar said. ''It's something we have to continue.''

Makar's 11th goal of the season broke the team mark that John-Michael Liles set in 2003-04. On his goal, Makar circled around the blue line before moving in and lining a shot through a screen.

Burakovsky's goal seconds later was his first in 14 games and had the Blues pulling Binnington for Jake Allen with 3:12 remaining in the second period. Binnington allowed four goals on 11 shots.

''I felt pretty good,'' Binnington explained. ''They had some quality chances and they capitalized on them.''

Alex Pietrangelo - on his 30th birthday - made things interesting down the stretch by scoring with 12:37 remaining to make it 4-3. The Blues pulled Allen with just under 2 minutes remaining, but couldn't tie it up. Landeskog sealed it with his empty-net goal with 1.8 seconds left.

''I liked our jump, our skating,'' said Avalanche coach Jared Bednar, whose team is 2-2 against the Blues this season. ''We had good energy in our locker room before the game and it carried over onto the ice.''

David Perron and Oskar Sundqvist also had goals for the Blues, who will lead the Central Division heading into the All-Star break. Ryan O'Reilly added two assists, including a brilliant spin pass that set up Sundqvist.

''These are the times when you look at big picture - and the big picture is we've put ourselves in a good spot here for the second half of the season,'' Pietrangelo said. ''We've got to be proud of where we are.''

Philipp Grubauer stopped 21 shots as Colorado moved to 2-0-2 on its five-game homestand.

After Sundqvist gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead 66 seconds into the second period, Jost tied it with his first goal since Nov. 30. That set off a wave of scoring with Makar and Burakovsky quickly following.

Binnington would like to have another chance at Burakovsky's blast, which went in on the short side.

''Unfortunate,'' Binnington said.

It happens.

''Not everybody is perfect every night,'' Blues coach Craig Berube said. ''We didn't win, but our guys are dialed in. A break is OK right now. When we come back, it's a tough schedule. Got to be ready to go.''

In the first period, it was St. Louis that rallied when Perron scored a power-play goal with 1:56 left in the period. He also collected an assist on Pietrangelo's goal.

Perron leads the Blues with 49 points (21 goals, 28 assists).

Colorado struck first 3:41 into the game as Samuel Girard intercepted a pass near center ice and dished it over to Mikko Rantanen, who fumbled the puck right back to Girard. The Avalanche defenseman slid a pass through the goal crease to an open MacKinnon.

It was MacKinnon's 28th goal of the season. The speedy forward is chasing his third straight 30-goal season (41 in 2018-19, 39 in 2017-18). That would join him with Hall of Famer Joe Sakic as the only Avalanche players to record three straight 30-goal seasons since the team relocated to Denver in 1995.

Girard's assist was his 10th since Jan. 1. Asked to explain his recent assist surge, Girard responded: ''I'm just trying to be myself.''

NOTES: Blues D Carl Gunnarsson returned to the lineup for the first time since Dec. 12. He's been out with an upper-body injury. ... Avs F Joonas Donskoi (concussion protocol) missed a fourth straight game. He's skating in a non-contact sweater. ... The Avalanche moved to 3-0 in day games this season.

UP NEXT

Blues: Off until Jan. 27 when they play in Vancouver.

Avalanche: Host Detroit on Monday before the All-Star break and bye week.

China Reports More Cases of New Virus as Hectic Travel Period Nears - Wall Street Journal

BEIJING—Chinese health authorities have identified 17 new cases of a pneumonia-like virus that has killed two people, raising concerns the disease could spread during the coming Lunar New Year holiday—the busiest travel week of the year in China.

On Sunday, the health commission in Wuhan, the densely-populated central Chinese city where the virus was first discovered, described three of the new cases as severe. Wuhan authorities didn't say how the new patients, 12 of whom are men, might have been infected.

The new cases bring the total number to 62, eight of which are deemed to be serious, the health commission said in a separate statement Sunday. A total of 19 people have been cured and discharged from hospital, the health commission said.

Scientists believe the pneumonia is caused by a previously-unidentified coronavirus, one of a class of pathogens that can cause illness in the respiratory tract. Named for their crown-like shape, they don't necessarily cause life-threatening diseases. Four of seven strains known to infect humans cause common colds, though one strain caused was responsible for severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, which killed hundreds after an outbreak erupted in China in late 2002.

Much remains unknown about the Wuhan coronavirus to Chinese health authorities. They are racing to better understand its origins and how it spreads, although they have said that the risk of human-to-human transmission is low.

China's weeklong Lunar New Year Holiday begins Friday, with hundreds of millions of people expected to travel, including migrant workers returning home to their families.

In a Sunday interview with state broadcaster China Central Television, Huang Chaolin, deputy director and chief physician of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, where many of the patients are being monitored, said authorities are expecting more new cases.

Officials in recent days have installed temperature testing points at airports and railway and bus stations to monitor those leaving Wuhan, the city's deputy mayor, Chen Yiexin told CCTV.

Cases of the new coronavirus have been reported in Japan and Thailand. No cases have been detected in the U.S., although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection last week began screening airport travelers from Wuhan for fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

Hong Kong's South China Morning Post on Saturday reported three suspected cases in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen and in Shanghai, on the country's east coast, citing unnamed sources.

Chinese health officials have previously said that two people infected with the new coronavirus have died, though both had existing health problems. Many infected patients were linked to one of Wuhan's largest meat and seafood markets, which was shut down Jan. 1.

Meghan: TV actress gives up starring royal role - The Japan Times

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:23 PM PST

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was hailed as a breath of fresh air for the royal family when she married Prince Harry, but the fairy tale quickly turned sour.

Saturday's announcement from Queen Elizabeth and Buckingham Palace set the seal on her withdrawal from royal life. It came less than two weeks after the couple's shock announcement that they wanted to step back from their frontline duties.

It had already become clear that Meghan was struggling to cope with royal life, especially since the birth of their son Archie last May.

Since entering the family, the 38-year-old former television star appeared determined to do things her own way. But in the end, the strictures and scrutiny that come with the monarchy appeared too much, spurring her and Harry to take a step back.

Meghan made her name as savvy paralegal Rachel Zane in the U.S. legal drama "Suits," but cultivated a high profile for herself outside the show.

She became a United Nations advocate for women's empowerment and a global ambassador for the World Vision Canada relief agency.

The Los Angeles-born actress had more than 2 million followers on her personal Instagram account and ran a successful lifestyle blog, The Tig, but closed them both as she entered the royal family.

Meghan was also revealed as the anonymous blogger behind The Working Actress, which chronicled the struggles of hustling for parts in Hollywood.

"She's very focused and someone who has been very ambitious," said royal writer Andrew Morton, who has penned a biography of Meghan. "Her great phrase is 'make the change.'"

Rachel Meghan Markle was born on Aug. 4, 1981, to Thomas Markle, a white, Emmy Award-winning TV lighting director who worked on top U.S. shows like "Married With Children," and Doria Ragland, a black social worker and yoga instructor.

On her mother's side, her ancestors were slaves on cotton plantations in Georgia. Her mother's surname is taken from a slave owner.

Meghan's parents separated when she was 2 and divorced five years later. She is now estranged from her father and his other children, her older half sister and half brother.

Ahead of the wedding in May 2018, her father set himself up for staged paparazzi photos that backfired, then suffered chest pains and needed heart surgery, causing him to miss her big day.

His leaking to the press of a handwritten letter from Meghan pleading with him to stop serially leaking to journalists seems to have done irreparable damage to their relationship.

His actions had, it said, already "broken my heart into a million pieces."

Meghan went to a private Catholic girls' school where she is remembered for her strong sense of right and wrong.

At age 11, her letter-writing campaign got the consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble to change a washing-up commercial, referring to people rather than just women.

Determined to give herself options, she studied theater and international relations at Northwestern University. The future duchess graduated in 2003, after which she landed a six-week internship as a press officer at the U.S. Embassy in Argentina.

Returning to Los Angeles, in 2004 she fell in love with go-getting film producer Trevor Engelson, who helped her get on the acting ladder as she struggled for bit parts.

They married in Jamaica in 2011.

Soon after their engagement, Meghan landed her signature role in "Suits."

While she filmed in Toronto, her relationship with her then husband became a long-distance one. As the struggling actress became a star, a series of flops followed for Engelson and the marriage collapsed in 2013.

Through a mutual friend, she met Queen Elizabeth II's grandson Harry in July 2016 while visiting London. Their romance quickly blossomed on a whirlwind camping trip to Botswana.

After their engagement was announced in November 2017, Meghan immediately began accompanying Harry on public events, with a focus on women, youth empowerment and the Commonwealth.

After their glittering wedding, seen as a moment of renewal for the royal family, media coverage became increasingly negative.

Reports appeared of a rift with her sister-in-law Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, of her staff quitting in droves, and a new nickname, "Me-Gain," to reflect her allegedly pushy style.

A vastly expensive, celebrity-laden New York baby shower also attracted criticism.

Surviving in the royal spotlight has proved to be her toughest role yet.

Inside Actress Halle Berry's Three Marriages - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:23 PM PST

Halle Berry has remained in demand as an actress. She made history when she became the first African American actress to win an Oscar for a leading role and has continued to challenge herself by trying versatile roles in a variety of film genres. But her career success hasn't transferred into her personal life.

The former beauty pageant winner has been married and divorced three times, which has been difficult to deal with publicly.

Halle Berry's marriage to Eddie Justice (1993 – 1996)

Berry first saw the New York Yankee when he played at a baseball game that aired on MTV in 1992. They met after Justice requested her autograph. The Mirror UK revealed that she gave him her phone number instead. Six months into their relationship, she proposed, and they married on New Year's Day shortly after midnight in 1993.

They lived together in Atlanta when Justice was traded to the Atlanta Braves. Berry often spoke fondly of Justice in interviews. But Justice later told People that Berry was insecure and had trust issues. "She carried a lot of baggage from her previous relationships," he said. "She was always suspicious. I've never known a girl who could throw a tantrum like she does."

They split in March 1996 and things turned ugly quickly. Berry filed for a restraining order to have Justice remain at least 500 yards from her Hollywood Hills home after she says he acted irrationally when he came to retrieve his personal belongings.

The divorce took its toll on the actress. She tearfully revealed to Oprah Winfrey that she contemplated suicide after they split.

She focused on work to get her through the difficult time. Justice later resurfaced to defend himself against allegations of domestic abuse from fans in 2015. He also claimed that Berry and her agent attempted to destroy his image out of bitterness.

Halle Berry's marriage to Eric Benét (2001 – 2003)

Shortly after her divorce from Justice, she met R&B singer, Benét, after a 1997 concert at Los Angeles's House of Blues.

There "weren't any sparks," she said, according to a July 2002 PEOPLE article. But after the two swapped emails for more than a year, she developed feelings. "I turned to him and said, 'You know what? I think I love you,'" Berry said.

They became engaged three years later at the Cleaveland premiere of her HBO film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and were married in January 2001 and raised Bennett's daughter India together – whom Berry adopted.

Benét was right by Berry's side when she became the first black actress to win for best actress at the Academy Awards for her role in Monsters Ball. She tearfully thanked her husband during her acceptance speech as he beamed in the audience with pride.

But almost immediately after, rumors swirled that Benét had been unfaithful. Berry said he came clean about his infidelity after she threatened to sue a tabloid for printing what she thought were false stories. Despite the cheating, Berry wanted her marriage to work. Berry likened his infidelity to a sex addict and Benét even entered treatment in an attempt to save his marriage.

People Magazine reported that they announced their separation in October 2003.

"Eric and I have had marital problems for some time now and have tried to work things out together," Berry said in a statement. "However, at this point, I feel we need time apart to reevaluate our union. We ask that you respect our privacy as we are going through this emotional time."

Benét later denied that he was not a sex addict and alleged that it was a coverup planned by Berry and her mother.

Halle Berry's marriage to Olivier Martinez (2013 – 2015)

Berry met fellow actor, Martinez, in 2010 on the set of the film Dark Tide. Three years later, they tied the knot on July 13, 2013, at the rustic Chateau des Conde in Martinez's native country of France. Berry was pregnant with their son, Maceo, at the time of their wedding.

Berry was shocked but happy to find love again after her second divorce from Benet – as well as her turbulent split from her ex, Gabriel Aubrey.

"She has called him 'The One,' " Sophie Dulac, the president of the Champs-Elysées Film Festival, said at the time. "She's said she never expected to meet this Frenchman, to fall in love like she has."

They welcomed their son in October 2013. They celebrated their first wedding anniversary with a romantic vacation in Hawaii.  The family was spotted spending quality time together and partaking in fun excursions like parasailing and zip-lining.

Berry shocked fans and apparently even Martinez when she announced their split after two years of marriage.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce," the couple said in a joint statement to PEOPLE. "We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children's privacy as we go through this difficult period."

Berry later admitted that her divorces made her feel "guilty and responsible" but she's since embraced the single life and focuses on her life with her children.

UFC 246 start time, who is fighting tonight at ‘Conor vs Cowboy’ in Las Vegas - MMA Mania

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:23 PM PST

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to kick off 2020 with the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) event, set to go down TONIGHT (Sat., Jan. 18, 2020) in Las Vegas, Nevada, streaming exclusively online via ESPN+. And there's no better way to start off 2020 than with the return of the biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) box office star ever, Conor McGregor. "Notorious" will face Donald Cerrone in the five-round Welterweight main event, though there could be major Lightweight championship implications hanging in the balance.

What's Hot:

UFC is starting off the new year with a bang, as the promotion's first event of 2020 will feature the highly-anticipated return of McGregor. Several fighters were hoping to be the one to welcome "Notorious" back into the cage, but once the dust settled, Cerrone was holding the winning lottery ticket. That said, it's a fight that makes sense, as the two men have some history that dates back a few years ago. More recently, the two were linked to fight each other in 2019. That fight never materialized after McGregor's comeback was pushed back even further. Still, if anyone is deserving of a big payday, it's "Cowboy," who has been one of the most reliable company men for UFC ... ever. Not only that, he is one of the most beloved fighters in the history of the sport, as well as one of the most entertaining. All in all, it was the right fight to make, though Justin Gaethje likely has a thing or three to say about that.

As for the fight itself, it's going to be an interesting one since it's taking place at 170 pounds. Cerrone has competed in the weight class 11 times so far, taking on some of the best the division has to offer. McGregor, meanwhile, has only competed twice at Welterweight, losing once to Nate Diaz before avenging the loss six months later. The advantage here goes to "Cowboy," who's tall and slim physique allows him to go into the fight lean, not carrying a ton of muscle.

As Georges St-Pierre recently pointed out, Cerrone is a slow starter, but once he gets into the later rounds, he can explode on his foes for a finish. That said, avoiding one of McGregor's bombs early on will be key. The striking department is pretty even, and if the fight goes to the ground, we've seen "Cowboy" tap a few guys, while all of McGregor's losses have come via submission. But according to Dillon Danis, McGregor's jiu-jitsu game has only improved, so we could be in for a surprise come fight night. Still, I fully expect this fight to be played out on the feet for the majority of the time, and whoever lands cleanly first will likely be walking home with the win. And much to everyone's delight, "Cowboy" already stated it will be an all-out striking affair.

Another major factor is time off. McGregor hasn't competed in more than 15 months because of a suspensionand other missteps — while Cerrone has fought five times during that timespan. Furthermore, there's no telling if all of the out-of-the cage incidents — which includes punching an old man in a bar, being accused of sexual assault on two different occasions, as well as smashing a fan's phone — have distracted McGregor from the task at hand. McGregor seemed to be a in a good place at the press conference, so it looks like he's put all of that behind him.

While there is no bad blood here between McGregor and Cerrone, showering each other with love during their pre-fight presser (see it), that won't stop them from trying to knock each others' blocks off. Indeed, expect both men to come out guns blazing.

What's Not:

Look, it's a big card and a big fight, but we can't deny that despite UFC's best efforts to pump it up, the hype and promotion — at least in my opinion — haven't been as big as many expected.

I mean, this is the return of the king, the biggest box-office star ever for UFC and the loudest guy in the room. But when you look at all of the buzz created for UFC 244 — a fight that featured Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal fighting for the made up "BMF" title — in comparison, it comes in second place by miles. Sure, the fact that President Trump attended and "The Rock" was there pumping it up played a huge part, but I expected a lot more buzz for McGregor's return. That said, I'm not saying there is not intrigue, because there is, obviously. I was just expecting a bit more.

Is it just me?

In hindsight, it simply may not matter as it seems McGregor's name and return alone is good enough to sell the card on its own. No disrespect to "Cowboy," of course. That said, once fight week rolled around, the anticipation did increase thanks to all of the pre-fight festivities, which saw McGregor and Cerrone finally come face-to-face.

Original Card Vs. Actual Card:

One shake up happened earlier this week, as Grant Dawson was forced to withdraw from his showdown against Chas Skelly and with no replacement provided, Skelly was removed from the event altogether. No exact reason was given as to why Dawson was forced out.

Then, during the official weigh-ins yesterday, Alexa Grasso missed the 115-pound mark by nearly six pounds, forcing the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to pull the plug on her Strawweight bout against Claudia Gadelha (full details here).

Injuries:

No injuries were reported for this event!

New Blood:

Aleksa Camur will be making his official UFC debut after earning his way onto the big stage via "Contender Series." At 5-0, the Light Heavyweight contender packs a powerful punch, winning all five of his contests via knockout, three in the first round. He will be facing Justin Ledet, who has dropped his last two fights under the UFC banner after starting off his MMA career with a near-perfect record (8-0-1).

Ode Osbourne is another "Contender Series" product. The talented Bantamweight has won his last four fights, and is 8-2 overall. Of his eight wins, seven of the have come via stoppage, so the man knows how to get business handled once the cage door slams shut. He will have his hands more than full, taking on Brian Kelleher, who has fallen on tough times inside the cage as of late. Indeed, "Boom" has dropped his last two after starting off his UFC career at 3-1. Furthermore, the bout was bumped up to the PPV portion of the event because of Grasso's scale fail.

How The "Prelims" Look:

Headlining the "Prelims" undercard portion of the card will be a women's Flyweight fight between Maycee Barber and Roxanne Modafferi. Barber is undefeated (8-0, 3-0 UFC) and has garnered the backing of Dana White and Co. as a future star for the promotion. So far, she has been doing her part by staying perfect, including five straight finishes, three inside the Octagon. Though she didn't get her fight against Paige VanZant, she did get a good test against one of the most-experienced female fighters in the game today.

With 39 professional fights on her resume, Modafferi will not be shook by Barber and there won't be anything "The Future" throws at her that she hasn't seen before. Sure, Barber has knockout power and is aggressive, but Modafferi has been there against some of the best in the world. "The Happy Warrior" has been unable to find any consistency thus far in her UFC career, but if she can derail the Barber hype train, her stock will get a huge boost.

Andre Fili will look to collect his third straight win when he takes on Sodiq Yusuff, winner of five straight (three under the UFC banner). It's a good test for both men, as Yusuff will see how he does against a seasoned veteran of the fight game. For Fili, stopping Yusuff's momentum before it gets even more speed would be a huge feather in his cap.

Tim Elliott will look to earn a much-needed win at Flyweight when he faces Askar Askarov. It's a tough draw for Elliott, as Askarov is undefeated thus far (10-0, 0-0-1 UFC), with his only small blemish being a draw in his UFC debut. You can bet Askarov will come out with purpose in search of his first UFC win, though it's in his best interest to not rush things too much as Elliott is as experienced as they come.

Drew Dober and Nasrat Haqparast will collide in an interesting Lightweight showdown. Both men are coming off impressive wins, as Dober knocked out Marco Polo Reyes last June, while Haqparast ended Joaquim Silva's night via strikes last August to collect his third straight win. Given their recent track records, I don't foresee this fight going the distance.

Who Needs A Win Badly:

It's no secret that McGregor needs a win more than anyone else on the card. Even Dana White has gone on record saying it's a must-win for "Notorious." Sure, McGregor has only lost twice during his UFC career to Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov, but the Irishman has so much riding on the fight. For starters, if he wants to get a crack at avenging his loss to Khabib, he needs the win, or else White and Co. will have no way to justify giving him another crack at the 155-pound crown with a loss ... regardless of how hard they try.

Furthermore, McGregor's other goals for 2020 may go up in smoke should he come up short. The former "champ-champ" has his eyes on Jorge Masvidal's "BMF" title, but if he loses in "Sin City," booking that fight simply won't make sense. Sure, "Gamebred" can still lobby for it and maybe the promotion bends and books it, but it could be a hard sell.

And despite the large shadow McGregor casts over everyone else, his stock will take a hit, as will his aura if he gets dusted. Coming off two straight losses — three if you count Floyd Mayweather — will damage McGregor's mystique. Yes, he will still be a mega-millionaire, and yes he will still get headlines, but will fighters still be chomping at the bit to get a "big money" fight against a man coming off two straight defeats? Winning for McGregor is the only option, as it will allow him to breathe a sigh of relief and put him on track to accomplish everything he's set out for himself in the new year.

Interest Level: 9 of 10

If you're not looking forward to McGregor's return, find a pulse ... somewhere. His presence on the card in itself is worth the price of admission (as well as these extra $5), especially since he hasn't competed in so long. As far as the rest of the card, though, it's not exactly screaming stacked; on the contrary, it's fairly-rounded with some interesting match ups.

In the co-main event, former women's Bantamweight champion, Holly Holm, will take on Raquel Pennington in a rematch from 2015. Holm defeated Pennington at UFC 184 in what marked "The Preacher's Daughter's" debut. It was a split-decision that raised more than a few eyebrows, as most felt "Rocky" had done enough to get the win. Since then, Holm went on to capture the 135-pound title and was involved five title fights, including dethroning Ronda Rousey. Pennington, meanwhile, has gone an impressive 5-2, losing in her first and only UFC title fight to date to Amanda Nunes at UFC 224. With a win over Holm, Pennington will not only score back-to-back wins for the first time in two years, but get her much-desired revenge. Holm, meanwhile, has her eyes on yet another title shot.

Also, Anthony Pettis will make the drop back down to Lightweight to face Diego Ferreira. "Showtime" is coming off a tough loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 241, prompting him to drop back down to 155 pounds after going 1-1 at 170 pounds. Ferreira, meanwhile, has been on a steady climb, winning five in a row which finally got him the huge fight he has been looking for. Pettis is sort of in a must-win here — he can't continue to hop back-and-forth between three divisions all of his career if he wants to get into the title mix.

Rounding out the main card is a big man showdown that will see Heavyweight contenders Maurice Greene and Aleksei Oleinik throw down (details). Greene is coming off a loss to Sergei Pavlovich, and the last time we saw Oleinik, he was slept in the very first round by Walt Harris, his second straight defeat. It's no secret Greene's best bet to win this fight is if he keeps it standing because if Oleinik takes him down, he could be in store for a nap.

Will we see McGregor return to his winning ways? And which "Cowboy" will show up come fight night? We will find out soon enough!

Haaland scores with first touch in Dortmund debut hat-trick to show Man Utd what they missed out on - Goal.com

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:23 PM PST

Erling Haaland scored with his first touch for Borussia Dortmund, before going on to complete a hat-trick, with the Norwegian striker stepping off the bench against Augsburg to show Manchester United what they missed out on.

Having become the most sought-after frontman in European football, the 19-year-old opted to continue his development in the Bundesliga.

Fellow countryman Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been hoping for a reunion at Old Trafford with a player he previously worked with when in charge of Molde.

United were snubbed, with Dortmund securing a prized signature.

They opted to ease the talented teenager into new surroundings when making a return to action after the winter break on Saturday.

Haaland was, however, to make an immediate impact after being handed his debut off the bench just before the hour mark.

He had been on the field less than three minutes when opening his goal account for Dortmund.

The youngster, who had been prolific for previous employers Red Bull Salzburg, also required just one touch in which to make his presence felt.

Haaland was not done there, with a stunning cameo seeing him find the target again within 10 minutes of his introduction.

Having recorded his first goal in the 59th minute, his second arrived 11 minutes later.

His introduction helped Dortmund, who were facing up to another frustrating afternoon, to turn an thrilling clash with Augsburg on its head.

Haaland was thrown on with the Bundesliga title hopefuls training 3-1.

He grabbed them a lifeline, before Jadon Sancho restored parity shortly afterwards.

Haaland then fired Lucien Favre's side in front with a third goal for Dortmund in the space of a remarkable 11-minute spell.

Having been acquired to make an impact for Dortmund in the final third, Haaland collected a first match ball of his time in Germany in the 79th minute.

Article continues below

With Augsburg reeling, the youngster completed his hat-trick inside 23 minutes of joining the action - joining Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the only man to net a treble on debut for BVB.

He had been sent on in place of Lukasz Piszczek, who had taken in 56 largely uneventful minutes.

Dortmund will be hoping that this is just the start for their new superstar striker, with United left to reflect on what could have been as their attention turns to alternative targets in the winter window.

大沢在昌の近未来冒険エンターテインメント! 〈新東京〉の人工島を巡る欲望と謎を鮮烈に描く『影絵の騎士』 | 「レビュー(本・小説)」 - カドブン

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 07:18 PM PST

Navy vet known as ‘Sea Lord of Mobile’ has died - AL.com

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 06:29 PM PST

A colorful and beloved veteran known as the "Sea Lord of Mobile," has died, according to veterans groups and Republican Party officials.

The death of retired U.S. Navy Capt. Hal Pierce, 87, was announced Saturday at a debate among GOP candidates for Alabama's District 1 Congressional seat held at the Daphne Civic Center.

Terry Lathan, chair of the Alabama Republican Party, said at the debate that Pierce made an impression on all those who knew him.

"(He was) never without his Navy hat on. Never without a patriotic hat on," Lathan said. "He just loved America. He was a role model for me growing up, not only in the (Republican) party, but as a patriot."

Pierce served in the Navy for 31 years, earning the rank of captain and serving as the Navy's port coordinator in Mobile. After retiring in 2011, he served for years as an advisor to the city of Mobile, where he acquired his unusual title.

According to his LinkedIn page, Pierce said he was "appointed by the Mobile City Council and mayor as Sea Lord of Mobile, Alabama, an honorary title involving advising the city on maritime affairs."

Pierce was also active in the American Legion, VFW, the South Alabama Veterans Council, served as a commissioner for the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, and worked for years with the Alabama Lighthouse Association to preserve the state's lighthouses.

"He had a super strong presence and he was one of the people I always looked for when I walked into a room," Lathan said. "His heart was bigger than life. He would always greet you or say goodbye by saying, 'Yo.'

"We loved him with all our hearts."

SoftBank to invest $40 billion for new Indonesia capital - CTV News

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 06:23 PM PST

JAKARTA, INDONESIA -- Japan's SoftBank is offering to invest $30 billion to $40 billion in the development of a new Indonesian capital, an official said Friday.

The billionaire founder and chief executive of SoftBank Group Corp., Masayoshi Son, hinted at partnering with the Indonesian government to fund the project when he met President Joko Widodo last week in the capital, Jakarta.

Son and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair have been included in the steering committee to oversee the construction of the new capital city on Borneo island that would be led by Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Indonesian Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan told a news briefing that SoftBank was offering around $30 billion to $40 billion, though it was not immediately clear what project the Japanese conglomerate would invest in specifically.

"We have not yet decided how they would invest, it could be for education, a research centre or hospital development," Pandjaitan said. He said he will meet Son in Davos and Tokyo later this month to finalize the plan.

After meeting Widodo last week, Son told reporters that he was interested in supporting "a new smart city, the newest technology, a clean city and a lot of artificial intelligence."

Widodo announced last August that Indonesia's capital will move from overcrowded, sinking and polluted Jakarta to a site in sparsely populated East Kalimantan province on Borneo island, known for rainforests and orangutans.

The capital's relocation to a 256,000-hectare (632,580-acre) site almost four times the size of Jakarta will cost an estimated 466 trillion rupiah ($34 billion). The government is set to begin the construction later this year.

Investors from Asia, the Middle East, the U.S. and China have shown interest in developing the city, Pandjaitan said.

Jakarta, with 30 million people including those in the greater metropolitan area, is prone to earthquakes and flooding and is rapidly sinking due to uncontrolled extraction of ground water.

Monsoon rains and rising rivers early this month left more than 60 people dead and 500,000 displaced.

Mineral-rich East Kalimantan was once almost completely covered by rainforests before illegal logging removed many of its original growth. It is home to only 3.5 million people and is surrounded by Kutai National Park, known for orangutans and other primates and mammals.

Indonesia is an archipelago nation of more than 17,000 islands, but currently 54% of the country's nearly 270 million people live on Java, the country's most densely populated island where Jakarta is located.

Guardiola Confirms He is Staying in Manchester City Next Season - Tempo.co English

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 06:23 PM PST

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said he will definitely be in charge at the Etihad Stadium next season, despite his club failing to keep up with runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool this term.

After winning back-to-back Premier League titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19, Guardiola's City find themselves far behind Liverpool this season. They head into Saturday's match against Crystal Palace 14 points off the top spot.

This has led to speculation that Guardiola could move on after a successful spell in the English game.

But the Spaniard said he has no plans to quit before the end of his contract in 2021.

"Unless they sack me, I am staying, 100%," Guardiola told reporters.

"I enjoy working with them and I like it, but even if it's going bad and we are not in the Champions League, I will not leave.

"As a manager, there are good and bad moments, you don't win all the time. But it's all about what we can do next and how we can improve."

Quake shakes eastern Indonesia; no initial report of damage - MyNorthwest.com

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 05:23 PM PST

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A strong inland earthquake late Saturday night struck Indonesia's easternmost Papua province. There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.

The magnitude 6.0 quake was centered 141 kilometers (87 miles) west of Abepura city at a depth of 33.6 kilometers (20.8 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Rahmat Triyono, head of Indonesia's earthquake and tsunami center, said in a statement the inland earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, and urged people to stay away from slopes of soil or rocks that have the potential for landslides as people in some parts of Papua province felt a moderate tremor for a few seconds.

He said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 260 million people, is frequently struck by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its location on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

PA schoolgirl's viral video nears million views - paNOW

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 05:04 PM PST

The post has certainly grown – to the brink of that special seven-digit mark – and so has the interest in Strong's obvious singing talent.

"A lot of people have been reaching out to me offering me gigs and to sing at certain events and ceremonies as the opening act," she explained.

The Ecole St. Mary student is from a performing family with roots in Stony Rapids in the North. She has been part of gigs with her dad and sisters as Thunder and The Sky Dancers. She has also been on stage at the SaskTel Youth Awards, Voice of the North, and will be part of Search For The Stars in P.A. later this month. She has a number of videos on her social media channels.

Asked if she modelled herself after any particular artist, Strong said while she liked to cover the likes of Adele and Alicia Keys, she very much wanted to project her own voice.

"I don't really like to compare myself to anyone famous because people might think I'm either better or worse than them …and I just want to be thought of as Rebecca Strong."

As her stunning social media post nears the million mark, it has certainly helped fuel her desire to make a go of a musical career once she leaves school.

"I want my singing to skyrocket," she said. "It takes a lot of work, but I want to live the dream of a super star."

'Incredible!' - Favre stunned by Haaland hat-trick on Dortmund debut - Goal.com

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 04:42 PM PST

Lucien Favre called Erling Haaland "incredible" after the striker came off the bench to score a hat-trick against Augsburg on his Borussia Dortmund debut.

Inspired by Haaland, Dortmund rallied from 3-1 down to record a 5-3 away win on Saturday that will live long in the memory.

The Norway international came on for Lukasz Piszczek after 56 minutes and netted with his first touch 183 seconds later with a low shot into the far corner.

Article continues below

Haaland doubled his tally with a tap-in and got his third with a cool finish, with Dortmund's creative trio Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus all getting an assist apiece.

The 19-year-old joined BVB for a reported €20 million from Salzburg amid competition from Manchester United and a host Europe's top clubs.

Favre knew he had a top prospect on his hands, but could not believe Haaland's exploits, especially given the youngster had limited training time due to a knee injury ahead of his substitute appearance.

"He has started very well," Dortmund head coach Favre told Sky . "He immediately showed his strengths with his runs in behind, and of course he scored three goals which is incredible.

"He moves well between the lines, which gives us another way of attacking. He was very good and did very well.

"At 19 years old, he has a huge potential for improvement, that's the most important thing. It was a crazy game."

Dortmund play Cologne on Friday and Favre was asked whether Haaland would land a place in the starting line-up.

He added: "The players always say they are ready to play, but he didn't train at all in December because he had a knee injury and couldn't do much in our training camp for three or four days.

"He was not yet ready to play 90 minutes [against Augsburg]. We will see about Friday."

Haaland himself wasn't getting carried away by his early heroics for Dortmund, stressing he came to the club to score goals.

"I am pretty relaxed about it, I don't really know why," Haaland said post-match.

"I'm at a fantastic club with great team-mates and good people around me. I came here to score goals and it was a good debut for me."

Dana White Offers Viral Video Star Summer Tapasa Job Working with UFC - Bleacher Report

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 04:34 PM PST

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JANUARY 17: Welterweight fighter Donald Cerrone leaves a ceremonial weigh-in for UFC 246 at Park Theater at Park MGM on January 17, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cerrone will face Conor McGregor at UFC 246 on January 18 in Las Vegas. (Photo by Steve Marcus/Getty Images)

Former Best Buy worker Summer Tapasa-Sataraka's textbook blocking formwhich was on full display when she stopped a would-be shoplifter from stealing a portable speakerhas led to her landing a job with the UFC.

ESPN's Marc Raimondi broke the news.

"On Friday, [UFC President Dana White] officially offered Tapasa a job with the UFC," he wrote.

Raimondi added:

"UFC vice president of communications Lenee Breckenridge said White initially thought Tapasa could work in a security capacity, but after being moved by talking with her, he felt that she could be valuable in an even greater role. No details on a potential position have been hammered out, Breckenridge said, but White plans to discuss it more with Tapasa on Saturday at UFC 246 at T-Mobile Arena."

Tapasa's act, which occurred at an Aiea, Hawaii, Best Buy, quickly went viral:

The video even got the "Baldy Breakdown" treatment from NFL analyst (and ex-lineman) Brian Baldinger:

White eventually took notice and wrote the following on Instagram Jan. 10.

"This is Summer Tapasa-Sataraka. She stopped this punk from getting away with stealing from BestBuy in Hawaii. She got fired for this. Flying her in this weekend and giving her tickets to the McGregor vs Cowboy fight. I WANT HER TO WORK FOR ME! Get ready for the best weekend of your life Summer."

Tapasa made an appearance at the UFC 246 weigh-in Wednesday, standing between main event fighters Conor McGregor and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone as they squared off.

Her security services went unused as the two fighters refrained from even talking trash let alone getting physical, but she'll apparently be used in other capacities.

Remembering the other series-clinching goal from Evgeny Kuznetsov - NBCSports.com

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 05:42 AM PST

When you think about Evgeny Kuznetsov in the playoffs, most probably think of his overtime-winning goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2018 that ended the series and handed Washington a long-awaited victory over its archrival. But that wasn't the first series-clinching goal Kuznetsov scored.

Before the Stanley Cup was brought to Washington, before the bird celebration, there was another epic moment of Kuznetsov's career that now feels overshadowed by the 2018 run.

In 2015, the Caps returned to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus. They entered the postseason as the second-place team in the Metropolitan Division, drawing the third-place New York Islanders in the first round.

A back-and-forth series, it ultimately went the distance with Game 7 being played in Washington. As even as the series had been, the Caps dominated that Game 7, suffocating the Islanders and giving up only 11 shots on goal. Joel Ward put Washington ahead 1-0, but Frans Nielsen tied it early in the third period. Despite the dominant defensive performance, Jaroslav Halak (remember him?) would not allow the Caps to the chance to put the game away.

Just when it began to feel as if Halak was going to steal away another Game 7 from the Caps, a young Russian center in just his first full NHL season took over.

With less than eight minutes remaining in the third period, Kuznetsov took a pass along the half wall, showed Frans Nielsen his back and when Nielsen bit, he spun and cut to the center of the ice. Nielsen was caught a step behind and whacked Kuznetsov in desperation, actually diving to the ice to try to keep him from breaking loose. In one slick move Kuznetsov had cut through the Islanders' defense and was in alone on net. Halak went down to the butterfly as Kuznetsov cut to center, but Kuznetsov showed incredible patience and did not immediately shoot. Suddenly, Halak was committed and helpless. He dove to his right desperately holding up the glove as Kuznetsov kept gliding across the ice, but Halak had left too much of the net open by going down too soon and Kuznetsov hit the corner.

With 7:18 remaining in the game and the series, Kuznetsov had given the Caps the 2-1 lead.

The series was a breakout performance for Kuznetsov who returned the following season and earned a top-six role, something not all that easy for young players to do under head coach Barry Trotz. It also gave a franchise still bearing the scars of Halak's 2010 upset a measure of revenge.

And the rest is history.

What heroics does Kuznetsov have in store for the Islanders on Saturday when the two teams meet at 1 p.m.? Tune in to NBC Sports Washington at 12 p.m. for coverage.

また「Want you!Want you!」

Only 12% of Older Americans Have Achieved This Impressive Retirement Savings Goal - The Motley Fool

Posted: 18 Jan 2020 04:42 AM PST

If you don't believe you'll need savings of your own going into retirement, consider this: Social Security pays the average recipient today $1,503 a month, or $18,036 per year. Chances are, that's not enough for you to live on, which is why you need savings of your own -- and the more you have, the better.

In fact, you'll often hear $1 million thrown around as an ideal target. You don't necessarily need a full million to retire comfortably -- but having that much on hand certainly can't hurt, either.

Still, it's a feat most savers struggle to achieve. In fact, only 12% of Americans in their 60s and 70s have $1 million or more in their nest eggs, according to a new survey from TD Ameritrade. But if you're serious about accumulating a cool $1 million by the end of your career, here's how to do it.

Smiling older man in suit standing in front of brick wall

1. Start early

The more time you give yourself to save, the more likely you'll be to accumulate a bundle. You won't have to part with as large a sum each month as savers who start later in life, so funding your nest egg becomes fairly easy. In fact, if you begin setting money aside as soon as you get your first job out of college, you could conceivably have a 45-year savings window to work with.

2. Invest in stocks

The money in your IRA or 401(k) needs to grow, and stocks are generally your best bet in this regard. If you play it too safe with your investments by sticking largely to bonds, you'll limit your nest egg's growth, and as such, you'll need to set aside even more of your hard-earned money each month to see solid results over time.

How well will your savings efforts pay off?

Let's imagine you do, in fact, give yourself a 45-year savings window for retirement. And assume that you load up on stocks, at which point there's a good chance your investments will generate an average annual 7% return, since that's a few percentage points below the stock market's average. In that case, here's what your savings balance could amount to, depending on how much you sock away monthly:

Monthly Savings

Total Over 45 Years (at a 7% Average Annual Return)

$200

$686,000

$300

$1.03 million

$400

$1.37 million

$500

$1.71 million

$600

$2.06 million

Calculations by author.

Not only are these some pretty impressive numbers, but they're also quite attainable given the modest monthly contributions they require.

If you don't have 45 years of work ahead of you, you may need to put away more each month to achieve similar results. But even if you're limited to a 30-year savings window, you can get to $1 million in a 401(k) by contributing $900 a month to that plan, which is just a bit more than half of what you're allowed to put in if you're under 50. And if you only have 20 years to save, you can get to $1 million by saving $2,100 a month, which isn't easy, but it falls within the $26,000 annual 401(k) contribution limit for workers 50 and over. All of this assumes you snag the 7% average annual return we used earlier. But again, if you go heavy on stocks, that's a reasonable assumption.

You don't have to end up with $1 million to enjoy retirement to the fullest. With a more modest lifestyle, you may do just fine with half that amount, or even less. The point is that saving $1 million is more doable than you might think, provided you start early enough or otherwise make some sacrifices later in life.

Céline Dion dedicates moving tribute to mom Thérèse: 'I'll sing to you with all my heart' - USA TODAY

CLOSE

Céline Dion is mourning the loss of her mother, Thérèse Tanguay-Dion.

Known affectionately known as "Maman Dion," the Canadian television personality died Thursday after being ill for some time, Dion's management confirmed to USA TODAY.

She was 92.

"It is with deep sadness that Feeling Productions announces the death of Mrs. Thérèse Tanguay Dion," reads a statement provided by spokesperson Chantal Tessier Friday. "Mrs. Dion died peacefully at home last night, surrounded by her family."

Dion, who's currently on her Courage World Tour, dedicated her Miami concert to her mother on Friday and opened up about Thérèse's final moments during a moving tribute.

"Two days ago, we got a call from the nurses who were taking care of her so well, saying that her time was coming soon," Dion recalled. "So last night, I joined my brothers and sisters in Montreal and I spent the evening at her bedside."

More: Celine Dion is 'not looking' for love after husband's death, but 'if it happens, that's great'

The singer continued: "We told stories. We sang songs. We hugged each other and we said our goodbyes. We are pretty sure that mom waited for us to be all together before departing."

Earlier, Dion shared a dated black-and-white family portrait on Instagram, featuring Thérèse, husband Adhémar-Charles Dion and their 14 children. The photo includes Dion, who is at 51 the youngest of nine girls and five boys. (Adhémar died in 2003 at age 80.)

"Maman, we love you so much," Dion captioned the throwback. "We dedicate tonight's show to you and I'll sing to you with all my heart."

Dion's mother died exactly four years after the singer lost her brother Daniel to cancer at age 59 on Jan. 17,  2016. Dion's husband René Angélil died from cancer three days before Daniel on Jan. 14, 2016, at age 73.

"There is not a day that goes by without me thinking about your beautiful smile," Dion wrote on Instagram Tuesday, marking the fourth anniversary of her husband's passing. "We miss you, thank you for watching over us my love. I love you."

Dion and Angélil share 9-year-old twin sons Eddy and Nelson.
