RootMetrics: Verizon’s 5G blazes past wider, slower T-Mobile and AT&T - VentureBeat

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 10:39 PM PDT

As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2020, all of the major U.S. carriers are operating consumer 5G networks, but between their separate city maps and varied approaches to using low, mid, and high band spectrum, they're delivering very different end user experiences. Those differences are laid bare today by RootMetrics, which has tracked network performance since before the transition from 4G to 5G, and presents a "mixed bag" of results: Verizon 5G users continue to see the fastest average and peak download speeds, but with very low availability, while T-Mobile and AT&T are delivering 5G at 4G-like speeds that are less likely to impress consumers.

According to the company's tests in five U.S. cities — Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. — there was no comparison between Verizon's 5G speeds and any of its rivals, if it's offering service in a given city. In Los Angeles, it delivered median 5G downloads of 247Mbps with a peak of 627Mbps, while both numbers were even higher in Chicago and Washington. By comparison, T-Mobile's L.A. numbers were 21.5Mbps and 125.7Mbps, while AT&T's were 36Mbps and 126Mbps, equal to or lower than their 4G LTE numbers in the same cities.

Credit Verizon's high band, short distance millimeter wave spectrum for those numbers, and blame its rivals' use of too little low band spectrum for their weaker 5G speeds. Though RootMetrics noted that T-Mobile was able to offer "5G" in all five cities with up to 57.1% 5G availability in any given city, its peak download speeds were slower than 4G in four of the five cities, and only barely faster in the fifth, with similarly mediocre median speeds. AT&T only had 5G in two cities, but its 4G service was faster than 5G in both of them.

Fourth-place U.S. carrier Sprint had a great showing, however, setting the stage for a stronger T-Mobile 5G presence after the companies complete their merger. Sprint's mid band 5G was available in four of the five cities, and it was at least a little faster in each city than its 4G. In Los Angeles, Sprint delivered median and maximum 5G speeds of 80.5Mbps and 201.1Mbps respectively, better than both T-Mobile and AT&T. Moreover, its peak speeds were pretty consistent from city to city, and its 5G availability was between 15.5% to 45.7% across the cities.

VB TRansform 2020: The AI event for business leaders. San Francisco July 15 - 16

It's worth noting that because the top three carriers' 5G networks remain "in the early days," both in flux and on the grow, RootMetrics characterizes all of the carriers' results as "encouraging," despite their ups and downs. Since the tests were conducted in late 2019 — ahead of recent additions of multiple 5G cities by Verizon and AT&T, as well as last week's opening of AT&T's millimeter wave 5G+ network to consumers with the release of Samsung's Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra 5G models — both speeds and coverage are already improving, and will only get better as the year progresses.

UK health minister Dorries diagnosed with coronavirus - Nasdaq

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 10:37 PM PDT

Adds quotes, details on diagnosis, reaction

March 10 (Reuters) - British junior health minister Nadine Dorries has tested positive for coronavirus and is self-isolating, she said on Tuesday.

Dorries said she took "all the advised precautions" as soon as she was told of her diagnosis.

"Public Health England has started detailed contact tracing and the department and my parliamentary office are closely following their advice," she said in a statement issued through the UK's health department.

The Times reported that Dorries met hundreds of people in Parliament in the past week and attended a reception with Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Britain's health minister, Matt Hancock, tweeted that he was "really sorry" to hear of Dorries' diagnosis. "She has done the right thing by self isolating at home," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the death toll in the United Kingdom from the coronavirus outbreak rose to six, British health officials said.

The health ministry also said the number of people who had tested positive for the virus had risen to 373 from 319.

Kaapo Kakko's two-goal night propels Rangers to key win over Stars - New York Post

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 09:25 PM PDT

DALLAS — It was a coming-out party for Kaapo Kakko, and it came at a very opportune time.

The Rangers got the second two-goal game of the 19-year-old's career as they started their pivotal three-game trip with a 4-2 victory over the Stars on Tuesday night.

Kakko was taken with the No. 2-overall pick in the draft in June, and he had not scored a goal since Feb. 9, and that was the only goal on his ledger since Jan. 4.

But with Igor Shesterkin rediscovering his form in nets after a dud in the 6-4 loss to the Devils on Saturday night at the Garden — the first game back for Shesterkin after he missed two weeks with a broken rib suffered in a car crash last month — the Rangers (37-28-4) were able to get themselves out of a rut.

The Blueshirts had gone 1-4-0 over their previous five — starting when Chris Kreider broke his foot in Philadelphia on Feb. 28 — and beating the falling Stars (37-24-8), got them back to within striking distance of the East's second wild card.

Either way, it had been clear to the Blueshirts that they needed to play better if they wanted to keep pace in the race.

"For the most part, we've done a pretty good job, but it's the consistency aspect that has kind of eluded us over these last four or five games," coach David Quinn said before puck drop.

After the first period, the Rangers were without center Filip Chytil, who suffered a lower-body injury and did not return. But by the start of the third, Kakko already had his two goals and the Rangers were up, 4-0.

Yet the first shutout of Shesterkin's career remained elusive, as Roope Hintz scored a power-play goal 1:23 into the third to make it 4-1. The Stars kept coming, and Andrew Cogliano buried a loose puck with 8:08 remaining in regulation to make it 4-2.

But the Rangers were able to kill a late penalty on Brendan Smith, as well as the final two minutes with Dallas goalie Ben Bishop on the bench for the extra attacker — finishing up a good performance by starting this trip on the right foot.

There had been a lot of emphasis on this road trip, as it goes to Colorado for the second leg of a back-to-back Wednesday night, then, after a couple days off, finishes up in Arizona on Saturday. But with Shesterkin showing signs of stability early on — after giving up five goals on 23 shots against the Devils on Saturday before being replaced by Henrik Lundqvist at the start of the third period — there was a renewed calm from the crease out.

"When you miss that much hockey, you expect a little bit of rust," Quinn had said about Shesterkin's layoff. "As we've all talked about, we have a good feel for what he's all about as a goalie and a competitor."

Shesterkin got some help right away when Adam Fox scored just 19 seconds into the game, walking into the slot and beating Bishop stick-side for a 1-0 lead. The lead was doubled at 10:12 when Mika Zibanejad stayed red-hot, finishing a nice setup from Brendan Lemieux to make it 2-0. It was Zibanejad's 40th goal of the season in his 56th game, the fastest any Ranger has reached that plateau (one game quicker than Jean Ratelle in 1971-72).

Then came the first big moment for Kakko, getting a great feed from Brett Howden off the left wall for an open one-timer from the slot, going in at 7:03 of the second and giving his team a 3-0 lead. The excitement for Kakko from the bench was palpable, as the grind of the season has worn on the talented Finn. He has just eight goals through his first 64 NHL games.

But by the time the second period ended, he had 10 — finishing a backhand into a gaping net after a slick feed from Zibanejad at 17:18, allowing his team to take a commanding 4-0 lead into the third.

Goal 2034 needs S'pore support, Football News & Top Stories - The Straits Times

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 09:25 PM PDT

Days after confusion arose over the status of Singapore's ambitious bid to qualify for the 2034 World Cup, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and Football Association of Singapore (FAS) yesterday issued a joint statement calling on stakeholders to support it as a "national project".

"Goal 2034 is a long-term aspiration, and a statement of the ambition and the desire of the FAS to develop Singapore football to greater heights, and make Singapore proud," said the statement.

"MCCY welcomes and supports FAS' drive for excellence. FAS had briefed MCCY and key stakeholders last year about its plans for Goal 2034, and FAS has been refining its plans based on the feedback."

This comes after MCCY Senior Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng said in Parliament last Friday that, while the role of the Government is to support national sports associations like the FAS, "Goal 2034 is a goal set by FAS. It's not a goal set by the Government".

He was responding to questions from Mr Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap (Aljunied GRC) and Mr Sitoh Yih Pin (Potong Pasir) on whether the Government supported Goal 2034 during a debate on MCCY's budget.

The FAS executive committee, in response, said in a statement on the same night that it found Mr Baey's comment "surprising" as "that was not our understanding".

The national body added it would seek clarification from the ministry on its position "at the earliest opportunity".

In yesterday's joint statement, MCCY and FAS said they "will continue to meet to discuss the Goal 2034 project, to establish greater clarity and alignment on the plan".

They added: "FAS has also been engaging other stakeholders, including the Singapore National Olympic Council, to further refine its vision and plans for Goal 2034.

"FAS and MCCY would like to see many stakeholders - including all Singaporeans who enjoy football - jointly own and support Goal 2034, and work towards this vision together as a national project."

Goal 2034 was first reported in August last year, when FAS vice-president Edwin Tong, who is also Senior Minister of State (Law and Health), revealed the FAS' goal for the national team to qualify for the 2034 World Cup.

Calling it a "realistic" ambition, he said then that the plan would be used to "focus and shape everything" the FAS and its stakeholders do and stressed that grassroots football, youth development, infrastructure and schools would be key.

The Singapore football team are currently ranked 157th in the world and reached a nadir in 2017, when they dropped to their lowest all-time ranking of 172nd.

The Lions have also exited the Asean championship at the group stage for three consecutive editions, having previously won four titles in eight editions from 1998 to 2012.

The announcement of Goal 2034 sparked a debate on the project's feasibility, with many drawing comparisons to Goal 2010, a similar plan to qualify for the World Cup that was mooted in 1998 but ultimately failed.

Biden Takes Command of Race, Winning Three States Including Michigan - The New York Times

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 09:07 PM PDT

Joseph R. Biden Jr. took command of the Democratic presidential race in decisive fashion on Tuesday, marshaling a powerful multiracial coalition in the South and the Midwest that swept aside Senator Bernie Sanders and completed Mr. Biden's rapid transformation from a sometimes-fumbling underdog into his party's likely nominee.

Replicating the combination of voters that delivered him broad victories a week ago on Super Tuesday, Mr. Biden won Michigan, Missouri and Mississippi with overwhelming support from African-Americans and with large margins among suburban and rural white voters.

Mr. Sanders was more evenly matched with Mr. Biden in the West, where Idaho and Washington were too close to call. But there was little doubt by the end of the night that Mr. Sanders had lost his recent status as the progressive front-runner in a race defined for months by feuding and factionalism on the moderate wing of the Democratic Party.

By besting Mr. Sanders for a second consecutive week, Mr. Biden, the former vice president, demonstrated that his successes on Super Tuesday reflected more than fleeting good fortune, and that many Democratic voters had rallied behind his candidacy in a lasting enough way to erase his embarrassing setbacks last month in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Addressing supporters Tuesday night in Philadelphia, in a tone that was more sober than celebratory, Mr. Biden said voters had put him "a step closer to restoring decency, dignity and honor to the White House" and moved to unify the party with an appeal to supporters of Mr. Sanders. "We share a common goal," Mr. Biden said, "and together we'll defeat Donald Trump."

In Tuesday's primaries, Mr. Biden assembled a strong electoral coalition that combined his party's most loyal constituencies — including African-Americans, women and union members — with a new wave of moderate white voters who have aligned themselves with the Democrats as refugees from President Trump's Republican Party.

Even in his moment of triumph, however, Mr. Biden made little headway with the youngest and most liberal primary voters, who remained steadfastly behind Mr. Sanders even as his national prospects have dimmed. Mr. Biden appeared mindful of his deficit with these voters, using his election-night remarks to acknowledge the "tireless energy" of Mr. Sanders's followers.

Mr. Sanders, a Vermont liberal, did not address supporters on Tuesday night, leaving an unusual void in the space his thunderous persona has typically occupied on election nights.

Mr. Sanders suffered the most grievous blow in Michigan, the biggest delegate prize of the night. After absorbing a series of unexpected losses last week, the senator had raced to revive his candidacy in Michigan, a state that four years ago helped power his insurgent challenge to Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

But even after holding several events across Michigan and mounting some of his most pointed attacks against Mr. Biden, most of all for his record on trade, Mr. Sanders was routed.

Credit...Allison Farrand for The New York Times

The contest in Michigan held great symbolic significance for both candidates, each of whom has presented himself as uniquely capable of reclaiming the Midwest for Democrats in 2020. Mr. Biden has long boasted of his bond with working-class voters there, while Mr. Sanders has enjoyed a lasting political glow from his surprise win in the Michigan primary four years ago. His inability to repeat that feat against a more popular opponent, Mr. Biden, further undercuts his argument that only a candidate who trumpets far-reaching change can energize voters there.

The losses in Michigan and Missouri were especially ominous for Mr. Sanders, because they suggested his strength among rural Midwestern voters in 2016 largely owed to their opposition to Mrs. Clinton. Against Mr. Biden, Mr. Sanders was trounced across the countryside of both states and saw working-class white voters, a pillar of his campaign four years ago, shift markedly away from him.

More important on Tuesday was the scope of Mr. Biden's victories: With 365 delegates up for grabs, the former vice president was poised to build what could become an insurmountable advantage. If he wins with similarly large margins next week in delegate-rich Florida, where Mr. Sanders trails badly in polls, he may make it all but impossible for the senator to catch up.

Mr. Biden's victories came against a backdrop of unexpected instability in the economy and widespread fear about the coronavirus as a growing threat to public health — forces that may have further bolstered the former vice president's message of steady leadership against Mr. Sanders's promises of social transformation. The market-rattling outbreak, along with the White House's uncertain response, has both underscored Mr. Trump's political vulnerability and added to the mood of urgency among Democrats bent on defeating him.

The spread of the coronavirus across the United States also raised the specter that political activities could soon be curtailed or restructured for reasons of public health. Just hours before the polls closed, both candidates canceled planned rallies in Ohio, citing concerns related to the virus. And in his subdued remarks at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Mr. Biden said there was a climate of fear and danger that demanded presidential leadership.

Mr. Sanders now faces the unenviable task of mapping a path forward in a race that has exposed the apparent limits of his campaign tactics and political message. He retains a strong base of support among young and very liberal voters, and he has expanded his popularity with many Latinos. But Mr. Sanders has struggled to make headway with the most important constituencies that resisted his campaign four years ago, and the senator has lost ground with some groups that backed him as the only alternative to Mrs. Clinton.

In Michigan, Missouri and Mississippi, Mr. Biden won black voters by colossal margins, including by more than 70 points in Mississippi, where African-Americans made up nearly two-thirds of the primary electorate, according to exit polls. But Mr. Biden also won white voters by double digits in all three states, and carried white voters without college degrees — a friendly constituency for Mr. Sanders in 2016 — by a narrower margin.

In a sign that Mr. Sanders may struggle to compete with Mr. Biden across the Midwest, the exit polls from Missouri showed that Mr. Biden carried union households by a 25-point margin over Mr. Sanders. That advantage suggests that Mr. Sanders's populist message and hard-edge criticism of Mr. Biden's record on trade had failed to dent the former vice president's popularity with a key constituency that made up about a quarter of the Missouri electorate.

Mark Brewer, a former chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party, said Mr. Sanders had confronted circumstances this time that made the state a tougher battlefield for him. Mr. Brewer, who was a supporter of Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, said that voters appeared to have made a straightforward assessment of the two candidates' electability and that "at least for tonight, in Michigan, Biden won that argument."

"It's difficult to compare tonight to four years ago: There is an incumbent president, who Democrats are just focused on replacing, and that was not the case four years ago," Mr. Brewer said. "Sanders was the underdog four years ago, and frankly Hillary Clinton took the state for granted and did not campaign here vigorously, and so forth. It's really apples and oranges."

Perhaps nothing better illustrated the direction of this nominating contest, though, than the surge in voter turnout. A centerpiece of Mr. Sanders's campaign has been his promise to win by inspiring a wave of new voters in the primary race and the general election.

But for the second consecutive week it was Mr. Biden who was the beneficiary of an increase in turnout compared with that of the 2016 race, often in the sort of suburban jurisdictions that powered the Democrats' big gains in the midterm elections. In Oakland County, Mich., the Detroit suburb where Representative Haley Stevens picked up a Republican-held seat in 2018, Mr. Biden was winning by nearly 30 points and turnout was on track to be about twice what it was four years ago.

The next few rounds of primaries are focused on big, diverse states where Mr. Biden is seen as having a solid advantage, including Florida and Georgia. And a number of states where Mr. Sanders won caucuses four years ago have since switched to hold primary elections, which tend to be less controlled by ideological activists, leaving Mr. Sanders without an obvious place to make a comeback.

The contests on Tuesday included four states that Mr. Sanders carried against Mrs. Clinton in 2016: Michigan, Idaho, North Dakota and Washington.

But there has been no indication that many Democrats have been having second thoughts about embracing Mr. Biden, to whom the party's voters turned abruptly last week as a safe option after a chaotic and confusing primary season. With the race effectively down to just Mr. Biden and Mr. Sanders, many Democratic leaders have clambered aboard the former vice president's campaign.

After Mr. Biden carried South Carolina on Feb. 29, rivals like former Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., and Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota quickly dropped out of the race and endorsed him. Once the Super Tuesday results were known, Michael R. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, did the same. By contrast, Mr. Sanders has not managed to unify support even on the left; Ms. Warren, a fellow progressive, has declined to issue an endorsement since leaving the race last week.

Mr. Biden, 77, and Mr. Sanders, 78, have both faced questions about their ages in recent days, as the race has narrowed to two men who would turn 80 within the space of a first presidential term — and as fears of a viral epidemic have rippled through the campaign trail. And supporters of Mr. Sanders have been sharply critical of Mr. Biden for his halting public manner and comparatively brief remarks at campaign events, with some suggesting that the former vice president lacked the physical vigor required to win and hold the presidency.

Mr. Sanders himself has not gone that far, though in a Fox News forum on Monday he criticized Mr. Biden for speaking for only a few minutes at one of his campaign rallies over the weekend.

A day later, Mr. Sanders used a Fox News forum to deliver a critique of Mr. Biden's record, but emphasized he had no interest in "making personal attacks on Joe."

The two men are slated to meet on a debate stage in Phoenix this weekend, before the Arizona primary on Tuesday, in what would be their first one-on-one encounter in the race. Mr. Sanders could face pressure on Sunday to inflict real damage on Mr. Biden, but doing so could prompt a backlash if by then he is seen as a kind of nuisance challenger with no obvious path to victory.

Many Democrats are eager to turn to the task of challenging Mr. Trump: Polls show that both Mr. Biden and Mr. Sanders will be competitive against the president, and will probably start the general election with something of an advantage. By a wide margin, however, Democratic voters say they view Mr. Biden as having the best chance of winning in November.

Joe Biden takes a big step closer to the Democratic nomination with Michigan primary victory - CNBC

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 08:37 PM PDT

Joe Biden will win the Michigan primary, NBC News projected Tuesday, in a crushing blow to his last serious Democratic presidential rival, Bernie Sanders.

The former vice president continued a run of early success Tuesday as he tried to put distance between himself and the Vermont senator in his push for his party's nomination. He will also win primaries in both Mississippi and Missouri, NBC News projects.

As the mounting victories carried Biden closer to becoming his party's standard bearer, he gave subdued remarks in Philadelphia after coronavirus fears forced his campaign to cancel a planned rally in Cleveland. Projecting another "good night" on Tuesday, he said "we are a step closer to restoring dignity, decency and honor to the White House."

As the night's results trickled in and his projected delegate lead over Sanders ticked higher, Biden suggested he had knocked Sanders out of contention and urged the party to unify to beat President Donald Trump in November.

"I want to thank Bernie Sanders and his supporters for their tireless energy and their passion. We share a common goal — and together we'll defeat Donald Trump," he said at the National Constitution Center.

Biden led polls of Michigan heading into the day. Sanders, looking for a spark for his campaign, hoped to duplicate 2016, when surveys showed him trailing Hillary Clinton by a wide margin before he narrowly won the state.

The Vermont senator's campaign put an emphasis on winning Michigan, and not only because it awards 125 pledged delegates, the most of the six states voting on Tuesday. Biden won at least 53 delegates compared to Sanders' 41, according to an early NBC tally.

Winning the critical general election state was seen as helping Sanders slow Biden's roll toward the nomination. Biden's bid for the White House was revived when a handful of presidential rivals and a slew of Democratic officials began backing him before and after his victory in the South Carolina primary 10 days ago.

Success for Biden in Michigan, along with another state favorable to Sanders in Washington, was expected to all but crush the senator's hopes of winning the Democratic presidential nomination.

A senior aide to Sanders told NBC News that he does not plan to deliver remarks Tuesday evening to address the results.

In the final days before the primary, Sanders hammered into Biden for supporting the North American Free Trade Agreement, which he has criticized as a job killer in Michigan's auto industry. He also highlighted past Biden comments suggesting he would freeze Social Security benefits —  messaging indicating the Sanders campaign saw the need to cut into the former vice president's support among older and white working class voters to win the state.

But he failed to replicate the success of his upstart 2016 bid.

In Michigan, Biden highlighted what he described as the Obama administration's achievements for the state. Campaigning with Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday, he pointed to the Affordable Care Act's role in expanding insurance coverage in Michigan.

In the days before the primary, Biden looked to shore up support with black voters in Michigan, who made up about 18% of the state's primary electorate Tuesday, according to exit polls. He campaigned in the state with Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, his former presidential rivals and two of the three black U.S. senators.

After Biden's win in Michigan, another former primary competitor in entrepreneur Andrew Yang endorsed him.

Overwhelming support among black voters helped Biden to big wins in Southern states such as North Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas on Super Tuesday earlier this month. Black voters also boosted him in Mississippi and Missouri on Tuesday.

It was no different in Michigan. Biden garnered the support of about two-thirds of black voters, compared to 29% for Sanders, according to exit polls.

Biden also beat Sanders by a 51% to 45% margin among white voters Tuesday, exit surveys found. The Vermont senator won a majority of white voters against Clinton in 2016.

Young voters also failed to turn out at the rates Sanders would have hoped in the states voting Tuesday. In Michigan, 18 to 29-year-olds made up 15% of the electorate, exit polls found. In 2016, they were 19% of all voters.

94000 people have used (flushed?) Denver's mobile toilets, and more are coming - Denverite

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 07:39 PM PDT

Some people don't want bathrooms near them, and yet everyone has to use the bathroom.

There's always a market for toilets. And these days, sinks with soap and water.

Now Denverites will likely see more public restrooms, which are actually somewhat rare, thanks to a $3.5 million deal with Liberty Waste Management that would add a mobile restroom trailer to the city's stock and a bathroom to Sonny Lawson Park in Five Points, among more expensive things. The contract with Liberty Waste Management will also provide portable toilets (plus cleaning and maintenance) on an on-call basis for special events and emergencies over the next three years.

On Tuesday, the Denver City Council's finance committee advanced the contract to a vote of the full council.

Denver started deploying mobile restrooms in 2016 to give people, particularly people without homes, a place to do their business and wash up. It wasn't just about convenience. It was about curbing diseases like hepatitis A.

"This has been a pretty important contract to support health department response and be able to facilitate hand-washing needs, not just with hepatitis A but as we look forward with coronavirus now, there's a lot of demands for hand-washing in certain areas," said Danica Lee, director of Denver Public Health and Environment's inspection unit.

The on-call contract will support the city's homeless shelters, but also its parks and other areas where temporary bathrooms are necessary, like at the airport where construction projects could demand them.

Everyone has to go, but not everyone likes the mobile bathrooms, which have moved around the Capitol Hill, downtown and Ballpark areas.

While some business owners have reported less human waste around their properties, city officials said they've received complaints from others who worry about drug use and, as City Councilwoman Robin Kniech put it, simply don't like seeing public restrooms and the people who use them.

"I try to remind folks that people have hung out on Colfax long before public restrooms arrive," said Kniech, who spearheaded the project four years ago. "Those tensions are going to require us as council members to dig in more for the program to really succeed."

An attendant monitors each trailer, and they're usually "vulnerable" residents who need a job, Kniech said. They're recruited from the Denver Day Works program.

There's no doubt the public restrooms fill a need. Cue the stats, which is what you're here for.

More than 250 people use the toilets daily, according to city-led surveys answered by more than 46,000 people.

Almost 94,000 people have used the toilets since they were installed, mostly people who identify as men — 58 percent.

And it's not just people experiencing homelessness who use bathrooms! Thirty-seven percent of people surveyed at the toilets said they work nearby. About 31 percent volunteered that they were homeless. And about 20 percent said they were commuting.

The most common age group is 31 to 59, followed by 19 to 30. Young people and people over 60 don't use the bathrooms all that often, data shows.

But here's the clincher: More than 99 percent of people said the bathrooms were in "excellent condition." Sparkling clean! No word yet on whether the city will rent these things out for your private event.

Singapore to shift approach, 'double down' on COVID-19 measures within country: Lawrence Wong - CNA

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 07:37 PM PDT

SINGAPORE: Singapore has to shift its approach towards containing COVID-19 within the country, as the virus spreads worldwide and border controls become less relevant and effective in the future, Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong said on Tuesday (Mar 10).

"As the virus spreads to countries everywhere, country-specific border control measures will become less relevant and effective because we are unable to shut Singapore from the world. We have to now shift our approach," said Mr Wong.

The authorities will have to double down on measures within Singapore, even as some basic surveillance at the borders continue, said the minister, who is the co-chair of a multi-ministry task force set up to handle the coronavirus.

"We will look at the whole range of social distancing measures," he said at a press conference held at the National Press Centre.

The Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that senior-centric activities by government agencies will be suspended for two weeks. Over time, the Government will have to ramp up and implement more social distancing measures, Mr Wong said.

READ: COVID-19: People's Association to suspend courses and activities for seniors

"We will look at a fuller range of social distancing measures we can put in place including for public events, community activities, school closures, workplace social distancing - including things like staggered hours, telecommuting - as well as religious services too. We will cover a broad spectrum and we will see what we should put in place," Mr Wong said.

Singapore already has other social distancing measures like isolating patients, putting close contacts on quarantine and issuing Stay-Home Notices, he added.

READ: Many local COVID-19 cases due to 'socially irresponsible' behaviour of a few: Health Minister

However, the authorities are "very mindful" that these measures can disrupt the lives of Singaporeans.

"If we were to do all of them at one time, we will literally have to shut down our city and everything will grind to a halt," he said.

REVIEWING ADVISORY ON LARGE-SCALE EVENTS

An advisory on large-scale gatherings has set the threshold for attendees in the thousands, but if this was adjusted to 500, it would affect religious services and weddings, he said.

Responding to a question on whether the National Day Parade (NDP) on Aug 9 will be affected, Mr Wong said: "For large-scale events, we are reviewing all the measures."

He added that the authorities are looking at whether they should be tightened.

"If so, then it will have downstream implications on all the events ... whether it is NDP or any other thing that is going to happen through the coming months," he said.

When asked if the upcoming March school holidays will be affected, Mr Wong said there are no plans to extend the school holidays but he did not rule out school closures in the future.

"If necessary, we will put them in place, and we will provide lead time for parents so that they can work out their own arrangements for caregiving of their children," he said.

"If there are social distancing measures we put in place that will impact Singaporeans, we will provide lead time. So certainly, school closures is one thing that impacts many people. We will have to provide lead time. We can't just do it overnight."

FATIGUE IF MEASURES START TOO EARLY

He cautioned that if some of the measures start too early, people may become fatigued and the measures may not be sustainable or effective.

"In that context, it is useful to think of this broad suite of social distancing measures as something we can apply from time to time, as circuit breakers throughout the entire epidemic cycle," he said.

By doing so, Singapore puts in "brakes" to try and stop, or slow down the transmission chain, and flatten the epidemic curve, he said.

"That should be our thinking around social distancing, and it's something we are actively studying. We are putting in something today, and there will be more measures that we will continue to consider over the coming days and weeks," he said.

He added that it is "critical" to implement the right measures at the right time, and this will be done based on the data, evidence and expert advice. Some will be temporary while others will be permanent, he said.

Canadian women salvage 2-2 tie with late goal against Brazil in final match at Tournoi de France - The Globe and Mail

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 07:25 PM PDT

Janine Beckie scored in the 87th minute as Canada salvaged a 2-2 draw with Brazil at the Tournoi de France women's soccer tournament.

Beckie completed Canada's comeback from a 2-0 deficit when she collected a through ball from Diana Matheson and scored.

The goal came after Brazil was reduced to 10 players in the 75th minute when defender Jucinara was given a red card for pulling down Canadian midfielder Sophie Schmidt at the top of the box.

Story continues below advertisement

Matheson scored Canada's first goal in the 74th minute. Matheson, who has 19 career goals, became the second Canadian woman to score international "A" goal in three different decades along with captain Christine Sinclair.

"We had a good performance, a winning performance for 90 minutes," Canada coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller said. "We talked about finishing strong and I think we did finish strong."

"Over all, in a very short period of time we played three tier one, top ten teams in the world and it was a great test for us."

Marta opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Ludmilla da Silva made it 2-0 for No. 9 Brazil with a goal in the 17th minute.

Canada, ranked eighth in the world, finished the tournament 0-1-2 after opening with a 1-0 loss to fourth-ranked France and following with a 0-0 draw with third-ranked Netherlands. Canada was unable to get a goal against the Dutch despite playing with a numerical advantage for most of the second half.

Canada, which qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics earlier this year, returns to action for a friendly against Australia on April 14 in Vancouver.

Heiner-Moller used the Tournoi de France to give minutes to all 22 players in camp in preparation for final roster selection ahead of the Olympics.

Story continues below advertisement

"You have to test players within a certain spine, so you cannot change everything every time," he said. "I think they got a good opportunity to show themselves and what they're capable of doing right now, all 22 players in three matches against Top 10 teams in the world.

"This was a great step for us to be ready for the Olympics."

The Latest: 31 residents in Washington care home have virus - Wilkes Barre Times-Leader

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:37 PM PDT

ROME (AP) — The Latest on the coronavirus epidemic sweeping the globe (all times local):

1:40 a.m.

A spokesman for the Seattle-area nursing home that is the site of the worst COVID-19 outbreak in the United States said Monday that 31 residents still in the facility have tested positive for the virus.

Authorities have said 19 coronavirus deaths have been linked to the Life Care Center of Kirkland, Washington, including three made public earlier Monday.

Life Care Center spokesman Tim Killian said tests have been performed on the remaining residents. Besides the 31 positives, Killian said three tests were inconclusive and one was negative. Results are still pending on 20 other tests. Killian said residents who have tested positive will be treated at the Life Care Center, and those who test negative will be moved to a different area of the facility.

Before the outbreak there were 120 residents at Life Care. Now there are fewer than 60.

Greece's powerful Orthodox Church has rejected calls to stop communion that has been identified a risk for spreading the coronavirus, Instead, priests have been instructed nationwide to pray against the spread of the disease.

The Church of Greece's governing body said Monday that the spoonful of wine inserted into believers' mouths during communion "clearly cannot cause the spread of disease."

It called communion is an "act of love" that conquers fear in a statement.

The statement says that the Church of Greece will print and distribute to its followers leaflets with precautions against the spread of the virus. It urged priests to conduct prayers during services on Sunday for the spread of the disease to stop.

The statement added that the Church of Greece would continue celebrating communion, "in the certainty that we (thus) commune with life and immortality."

Officials say the commander of the U.S. Army in Europe and several staff members may have been exposed to the new coronavirus.

The Army says in a statement Monday that Lt. Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli and the others are self-monitoring their health and working remotely.

Also Monday, French officials said that Culture Minister Franck Riester tested positive for the virus.

French Health Minister Olivier Veran says that Riester has shown "few symptoms" and is under self-quarantine at home.

Veran says Riester had spent time at the country's National Assembly lower house of parliament where several lawmakers tested positive.

___

10 p.m.

Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte says he is restricting travel nationwide to try to stop the spread of the new coronavirus.

Monday's decree came the same day it was announced that the first COVID-19 patient in the northern Italy cluster is breathing on his own for the first time since he tested positive.

The 38-year-old named Mattia was moved out of intensive care Monday. He tested positive Feb. 21 and opened Italy's health care crisis.

Italy has 9,172 cases of the new virus. With the latest numbers, Italy again overtook South Korea as the country with the most cases outside China. More than 460 with the virus have died in Italy.

___

8:50 p.m.

Officials in the United States are reporting four more deaths of people infected with the new coronavirus, bringing the total in the country to 26, most of them in Washington state.

Health officials in Washington on Monday reported three more coronavirus deaths, all residents of a Seattle-area nursing home that has been racked by COVID-19.

Washington state has now at least 22 deaths linked to the coronavirus. Authorities say 19 of those are associated with the Life Care Center of Kirkland.

In California, officials reported the second COVID-19 death in the state after a Santa Clara County woman in her 60s died Monday.

The other two U.S. virus-related deaths took place in Florida.

The virus has infected at least 600 people in the U.S.

___

8:30 p.m.

A cruise ship with a cluster of coronavirus cases has arrived at a port in the San Francisco Bay Area after it was forced to idle off the California coast for days.

The Grand Princess pulled into the Port of Oakland on Monday with more than 3,500 people aboard — 21 of them infected with the new virus. It's unclear how many tr

avelers would get off the ship Monday.

The ship is carrying people from 54 countries. Americans will be transported to military bases in California, Texas and Georgia to be tested for the COVID-19 virus and quarantined. The State Department was working with the home countries of other passengers to arrange their repatriation.

California's governor says about 1,100 crew members, 19 of whom have tested positive for COVID-19, will be quarantined and treated aboard the ship, which will dock elsewhere.

___

7:50 p.m.

Canadian health officials say a man has died of the new virus at a seniors care home in North Vancouver in what is believed to be the first COVID-19 death in that country.

British Columbia Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix announced on the weekend that two elderly residents of the Lynn Valley Care Centre facility had been diagnosed with the virus.

Henry says the diagnoses followed an earlier diagnosis of a worker at the care home, making the cases especially concerning as examples of community transmission.

Health officials described the situation at the care center as an "outbreak."

There are now 32 cases of the new coronavirus in British Columbia and more than 70 in Canada.

___

7:45 p.m.

Slovakia, the Roman Catholic stronghold in central Europe, is banning Mass and all other religious events for the next two weeks in an effort to contain the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini says that starting Tuesday all cultural, sports and social events are banned for at least two weeks. That includes the closure of movie theaters, and postponement of matches in the top Slovak soccer and hockey leagues.

Also, the Slovak nationals who return home from Italy, China, South Korea and Iran have to be quarantined for two weeks at home.

The authorities will also expand the preventive checks that are already carried out on the border with Austria to all other surrounding countries.

Slovakia has seven confirmed cases of COVID-19.

___

6:45 p.m.

Officials at the World Health Organization said Monday that of about 80,000 people who have been sickened by COVID-19 in China, more than 70% have recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

Patients are typically released when they test negative twice for the virus within 24 hours, meaning they're no longer carrying the virus, although some countries may be using a slightly different definition, that may include when people have no more respiratory symptoms or a clear CT scan.

The World Health Organization said it could take considerably longer for people to be "recovered," depending on the severity of disease.

Dr. Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization's emergencies chief, said it can take up to six weeks for people to fully recover from COVID-19 infections, which could include pneumonia and other respiratory problems in serious cases. He said the numbers of reported patients have not always been systematically provided to World Health Organization although the U.N. health agency is asking every country with cases for further information.

___

6:40 p.m.

Ireland has canceled all St. Patrick's Day parades across the country in an attempt to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced the cancellation and said "further advice about mass public gatherings will be issued in the next few days."

The annual March 17 parade in Dublin is one of Ireland's biggest tourist events, and typically draws half a million people onto the city's streets. Tens of thousands more flock to parades in Ireland's second-largest city, Cork, and smaller communities.

Ireland has 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

___

6:20 p.m.

A key U.N. trade organization is warning of looming recession in the world economy as countries respond to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Richard Kozul-Wright of the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development predicts a global "hit" to the world economy of between $1 trillion and $2 trillion this year, and cautions it could be worse.

Even before oil markets plunged Monday, Kozul-Wright said countries whose economies are largely dependent on production of commodities will face pressures as an economic slowdown reduces demand for their products.

Kozul-Wright said the European Union, which faced poor economic prospects at the end of 2019, was "almost certain" to tumble into recession this year, pointing especially to pressures in Germany and Italy.

He was speaking at a release of a new UNCTAD report examining the possible impact of the COVID-19 outbreak and forecasting that annual global growth will fall below 2.5% this year.

___

6:15 p.m.

The executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the agency that runs the metropolitan area's airports, tested positive and is isolated in his home, according to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo noted that director Rick Cotton had been at the facilities while travelers were returning from hotspots.

Meanwhile, the official who runs the Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports of Paris also confirmed positive.

___

6:05 p.m.

European financial markets have fallen into a bear market, closing the day with their heaviest losses since the darkest days of the 2008 global financial crisis.

The index in Italy, where the government shut down travel into and out of the country's financial and industrial heartland, fell a massive 11.2%.

Britain's FTSE 100 shed 7.3%, Germany's DAX 7.9% and the CAC 40 in France dropped 8.4%.

The regional Stoxx 600 index fell 7.4%, more than 20% lower than its most recent peak and putting it in a bear market.

The drop comes amid widespread concerns about the mounting economic costs of containing the new coronavirus. A dramatic dive in the price of oil, which lost 20% overnight, has further shaken investors.

___

4:45 p.m.

Germany has reported the first two deaths in the country of people infected with the new coronavirus.

Heinsberg county in Germany's far west reported the first death on Monday. The city of Essen then reported an 89-year-old woman's death as the second.

The Heinsberg area has seen the highest concentration of infections in Germany so far.

The German state where both Heinsberg and Essen are located, North Rhine-Westphalia, accounted for 484 of the 1,112 infections in Germany confirmed as of Monday morning.

Earlier in the day, experts credited rapid testing as the outbreak spread for the absence of virus-related deaths in Germany. They said Germany caught many cases early on, including in younger patients who were less likely to develop serious complications.

___

2:55 p.m.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned against thinking that measures to slow the spread of the new coronavirus are in vain, insisting that they are buying "valuable time."

Merkel spoke at a German-Greek business forum in Berlin on Monday as stock shares plunged in Europe and elsewhere amid increasing disruption caused by the worldwide virus outbreak. Germany reported 1,112 confirmed cases as of Monday morning but the country hasn't yet reported any infection-related deaths.

The German leader said that while the virus will spread further in Germany, "that in no way means that everything we are doing in every country on this Earth, including in Germany, to break chains of infections with quarantine measures was in any way in vain."

Disneyland Paris says a male backstage cast member has tested positive for COVID-19 but that the park will remain open.

The staffer, who was not named and whose age is not known, was already on sick leave when Disney was notified about the infection Sunday. He is receiving treatment.

Park officials said since the infected cast member worked backstage he was not in contact with the public. Cast members in contact with him with have been asked to stay at home and seek medical attention if they become ill.

Disneyland Paris had already reinforced sanitation procedures, such as extra cleaning of outdoor sites. All three Asian parks — Shanghai Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Resort – have been closed over the virus outbreak. Disney said Shanghai Disney Resort partially resumed operations Monday.

Dutch king apologizes for 'excessive violence' in colonial Indonesia - The Telegram

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 06:07 PM PDT

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Dutch King Willem-Alexander apologized on Tuesday for the "excessive violence" inflicted on Indonesia during his country's colonial rule, the monarchy's first such admission of regret to the Southeast Asian nation.

The apology addressed the violence by Dutch forces during the period from Indonesia's declaration of independence in 1945 until 1949, when the Netherlands recognized it as an independent nation.

"I would like to express my regret and apologize for excessive violence on the part of the Dutch in those years," King Willem-Alexander said at the presidential palace in Bogor during a visit to Indonesia.

"I do so in the full realization that the pain and sorrow of the families affected continue to be felt today," he said in his speech, a copy of which was posted on the website of the Royal House of the Netherlands.

The Dutch government has previously apologized to Indonesia and paid some damages to survivors for violence carried out during colonial rule.

In 2011, Tjeerd de Zwaan, then the Dutch ambassador, apologized for killings in 1947 in a village in the province of West Java. Two years later, de Zwaan also apologized for killings in 1947 on the island of Sulawesi.

Last year, a Dutch appeals court in the Hague ordered the hearing of a lawsuit by five Indonesians who hold the Netherlands responsible for the execution of their fathers by Dutch soldiers in 1947.

During the four-day trip, the king and his wife Queen Maxima are set to visit the ancient capital of Yogyakarta and the Sebangau National Park in Indonesia's province of Central Kalimantan on Borneo, according to the royal website.

In his speech, the king also offered condolences for seven people killed when two boats collided in Central Kalimantan during preparations for the royal visit.

Indonesia has agreed on new partnerships with the Netherlands on women's issues, peace, and security, as well as on the control of contagious diseases, President Joko Widodo said on Tuesday.

From 1800 to 1949, the archipelago was a colony of the Netherlands known as the Dutch East Indies, and an important source of wealth, thanks to the trade in spices, precious metals and minerals.

Starbucks is rolling out a new mobile game with big prizes - TODAY

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:39 PM PDT

Starbucks fans will soon have a new way to earn even more rewards from their favorite coffee chain.

On Tuesday, the company announced the release of its first augmented reality game. Called Starland, the game will be similar to the wildly popular Pokémon Go craze that made its debut a few years back — let's just hope this version results in fewer real-life injuries.

To play Starland, people first have to sign up for Starbucks Rewards program, download the app and make sure they have a working camera on their smartphone. Over the next month, the coffee chain says it will be giving away 2.5 million different prizes through the game.

Starbucks is rolling out its first augmented reality game, Starland, on March 13. Starbucks

Starting Friday, March 13, every Starbucks Rewards member will have the chance to play the game up to two times a day. Each game will give players an opportunity to win something, whether it's a smaller prize, like a raffle ticket you can put toward a grand prize, or an instant win worth real money.

So how does it work? When players open the game, they will see floating stars in their surroundings (you don't have to be in a Starbucks store) through the phone's camera. Stars may change positions as players shift their phones around. Catching the stars will give players the chance to win various prizes, including free drinks for an entire year, the ability to earn triple stars (Starbucks Rewards points), free breakfast for a year, a $500 Starbucks gift card or 15,000 stars — which is about 100 Starbucks drinks or about 75 lunch items.

Instant prizes include free brewed coffee, a free pastry and 150 bonus stars.

This isn't the first time the coffee chain has given customers the chance to win free Starbucks via gaming.

Starbucks Summer Game (which was not an augmented reality experience) returned last August for the fourth year. It allowed Starbucks Rewards members the chance to win up to 2 million prizes, including a grand prize trip to Costa Rica.

For the past several years, the company has also run a Starbucks for Life sweepstakes around the holidays.

As with the chain's previous games, Starland lets customers earn plays when they spend money at participating Starbucks locations in the U.S. and Canada.

If you want to get in on the action but aren't a Starbucks Rewards member yet, you can sign up for free on the chain's website. But do it soon because the Starland game ends April 8.

Ilicic tears up record books as four-goal hero sends Atalanta through - Goal.com

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:25 PM PDT

Josip Ilicic wrote himself into the record books by scoring four goals for Atalanta against Valencia to break Zlatan Ibrahmovic's record and become the oldest player to score an away hat-trick in the Champions League.

The Slovenian, aged 32 years and 41 days, struck twice in each half to secure a 4-3 victory on the night for the Italian side and an 8-4 win on aggregate to seal their place in the quarter-finals.

He beats the previous record held by former Sweden striker Ibrahimovic, who was aged 32 years and 20 days when he scored four goals for Paris Saint-Germain against Anderlecht in October 2013.

Ilicic, who is the first Slovenian to score a hat-trick in the Champions League, has now struck 14 goals in all competitions in 2020, more than any other player from Europe's top five leagues. It brings his tally for the season to 21 in 29 appearances in all competitions.

He is just the fourth player to score at least four goals in a Champions League knockout game after Lionel Messi, Mario Gomez and Robert Lewandowski, though he is the first player to do so away from home.

And after also hitting the back of the net in their 4-1 first-leg victory, Ilicic joined Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to score five or more goals over two legs of a Champions League knockout tie.

It means Atalanta become the first team making their Champions League debut to reach the last eight since Leicester City in 2017 and the first Italian side to do so since Lazio all the way back in 2000.

Ilicic scored twice from the spot either side of Kevin Gameiro's strike to give Gian Piero Gasperini's side a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Article continues below

Gameiro levelled for Valencia shortly after the restart before Ferran Torres put them ahead on the night and raised hopes of a dramatic comeback, only for Ilicic to score twice in the final 19 minutes and seal the victory for the visitors.

Though it was a pulsating encounter at the Mestalla, no fans got to see it as the game was played behind closed doors due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.

It is also likely to be Atalanta's final game for some time, with Serie A currently suspended indefinitely after Italy was placed in a countrywide lockdown in an attempt to halt the spread of the virus.

Time Scales, Viral and Human - Science Magazine

Posted: 10 Mar 2020 05:23 PM PDT

I can tell that the current events are getting a bit overwhelming by the difficulty of writing about other topics here! I'm not specifically on a coronavirus topic today, but rather on what some of the news coverage is saying about our expectations for medical research.

One of the things people have noted about my two recent posts on potential therapies is that I have not been too optimistic about something helping us out in the near term. I don't want that to be interpreted as "We're All Doomed", because we aren't. This epidemic will pass, as they all do, but the question is of course how much damage it will cause as it peaks. And unfortunately, I don't see much of that damage being mitigated by what I do for a living, which is early-stage drug research. That's frustrating; in fact, I think it's a contributing factor to my mood in general. Here I am, a person who's made a career out of trying to develop new therapies for sick patients, and what do I have to offer?

I've seen a number of things in the last week or two from other folks in the drug discovery world, looking at possible new targets, new screens of chemical matter, and so on. There are several ways to look at this sort of thing. One is that efforts to find new drugs for such conditions have to start somewhere, and the things I've seen have been perfectly reasonable approaches to doing that. The counterpoint, though, is that a screen against a new target today might, if everything works really well, lead to a new drug in about the year 2029 (and a lot of things will have to go right for even that to happen). If you look at past respiratory viral outbreaks, a recurring feature is that drug discovery starts up, makes a bit of progress, and then the disease goes away and things go back on the shelf (H1N1, SARS, MERS, and more). Now, there's a counterargument to that as well, and I don't want to minimize it: the SARS work (for example) definitely informs the efforts on the current outbreak, because they're rather similar viruses.

But if I were going to pile a lot of funding into this field right now, I would concentrate on the possibilities of repurposing existing drugs (and of getting manufacturing and distribution ramped up should something work), and on vaccine development should we have to deal with this virus again. As mentioned yesterday, we're not going to have a vaccine in time to deal with the wave that's hitting us now, but we can be ready if it comes back around. This seems to be just what the recently announced COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator effort is aiming at, and it's good to see.

While driving this morning, I heard an NPR segment with someone warning that vaccine development was going to take longer than people thought, that the talk of taking one into trials meant that just the very first smallest steps were underway, that a year to 18 months was about the quickest imaginable timeline and that was if things went perfectly. It turned out to be Anthony Fauci being interviewed, and good for him. These don't seem to be politically popular things to say in some parts of the administration, but we need the truth here. I worry that there's a good-sized segment of the population that is still not realizing how bad things could get, and another good-sized one that expects biomedical research to come to the rescue shortly with a drug or vaccine that will stop things in their tracks.

Well, I am very eager to see the remdesivir trial results (we should get the first ones shortly), because I still think that's the best shot for a repurposed drug that could have a real effect. After that, though. . .no, I don't think there's a lot that's going to help out. And even remdesivir, should it have some efficacy, will be a major challenge to deploy in time. I would like to be wrong about this, believe me.

I think a lot of people have been watching a lot of TV shows that require the plot lines to be wrapped up quickly and neatly – that's always been a particular problem with anything involving R&D, because "quickly" and "neatly" are often not very good descriptors of what we do. I shouldn't blame TV, of course – you can go back to earlier in the 20th century and see plenty of examples from pulp science fiction and adventure stories of that peculiarly American form, the "Edisoniade", where a competent, wisecracking team of inventors crank out one amazing new plot-resolving device after another. From the Frank Reade and Tom Swift stories through E. E. Smith, John W. Campbell, and George O. Smith (just to name a few) there's always been a market for that genre, and the police and medical procedural shows are just another manifestation.

The good part is, we really do crank out a lot of amazing things. The bad part is that we can't always pull that off on the tight schedules that people imagine, and this is probably going to be one of those times. It's the low-tech stuff that's important right now: soap and water, staying out of big crowds, etc. Keeps a person humble, it does.

Nonthermal plasma can inactivate airborne viral threat to pigs - University of Michigan News

ANN ARBOR—One of the most costly diseases facing the pork industry is caused by a virus that new research shows can be rendered harmless in a fraction of a second by a cold plasma reactor developed at the University of Michigan.

The research is the first demonstration of nonthermal plasma used to inactivate an airborne virus known to cause disease in animals.

In lab testing, airflow containing Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSv) passed through the reactor where it was exposed to charged, highly reactive fragments of air molecules. Tests showed that 95% of the viruses were inactivated or removed during the process.

And that number is likely to improve with modifications to the reactor itself. Each year, PRRSv costs U.S. pork producers nearly $650 million in losses.

In 2017, Herek Clack, a U-M associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, led a team that developed the nonthermal plasma reactor and demonstrated its performance on PRRSv virus, achieving at least 95% inactivation and removal of the virus particles. Results were published this week in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, but first appeared in 2017 on the website of the National Pork Board, which funded the study.

Last year, Clack and his team challenged the nonthermal plasma reactor with a test virus, one harmless to humans. Those results showed 99.9% of the test viruses were inactivated or removed from the air stream.

Nations around the globe are struggling to contain the novel coronavirus dubbed COVID-19. This research represents a step toward next-generation collective protection technologies that can sterilize air supplied to inhabited enclosed environments like pig farms or public transportation, such as commercial airline and cruise ship cabins. Clack envisions the technology as an eventual replacement for the surgical mask. It could also provide complementary protection during the long development cycle required for vaccines.

"This latest research showing comparable performance for two different types of viruses demonstrates that, unlike vaccines, the protective effect of nonthermal plasmas is not dependent on viral strain," Clack said. "This would mean a broader basis for protection that doesn't involve the months or years that are needed to develop specific vaccines for each novel or emerging viral disease."

To gauge the effectiveness of nonthermal plasmas, researchers pumped PRRSv particles into flowing air as it enters a reactor. Inside, borosilicate glass beads are packed into a cylindrical shape, or bed. The viruses flow with the air through the spaces between the beads, and that's where they're inactivated.

"In those void spaces, as the applied voltage increases the plasma is produced until sparks begin to initiate," Clack said. "By passing through the packed bed, pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria in the air stream, are attacked by unstable molecular fragments called radicals. Afterwards, the virus has diminished ability to infect cells."

During testing, researchers tracked the amount of viral genome present in the air at different stages during the trip through the reactor. In this way, Clack and his team were able to determine how much of the air sterilizing effect was due to inactivation. With PRRSv, up to 95% of sterilization was due to inactivation, and with the test virus, that number was more than 99%.

The approach—combining filtration and inactivation of airborne pathogens—could provide a more efficient way of sterilizing air than either approach, filtration or inactivation, alone. Traditional surgical masks operate using only filtration for protection.

Ultraviolet radiation provides no filtration effect and can't sterilize as quickly, as thoroughly or as compactly as nonthermal plasma.

"Airborne transmitted diseases represent one of the biggest threats to people and animals," said Montserrate Torremorrell, a co-author and associate professor of veterinary medicine at the University of Minnesota. "A technology like this nonthermal plasma reactor is a breakthrough that will help keep both healthy."
