Cavani could join Boca Juniors 'very soon' – Bermudez - Goal

Posted: 30 Mar 2020 12:07 AM PDT

Boca Juniors sporting director Jorge Bermudez is hopeful Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani will join the Argentine giants "very soon".

Cavani is out of contract in June and the Uruguay international has been linked with a move away from PSG following his failed transfer to Atletico Madrid in January.

The 33-year-old – PSG's all-time leading goalscorer – has also reportedly emerged as a target for new MLS franchise Inter Miami .

But Bermudez believes Boca, where club legend Juan Roman Riquelme is now vice-president, can lure the PSG forward to Buenos Aires.

"Knowing Riquelme and the distance to [former Uruguay international Diego] Forlan, and knowing the category of Cavani, hopefully it will be very soon," Bermudez told Radio Cooperativa

"He would give us a great hand and be very supportive. I think he wants to come to Boca."

Bermudez added: "If he comes it is for a real desire and the signs are clear."

Prior to the postponement of Ligue 1 and football due to coronavirus, Cavani had scored seven goals across all competitions in 2019-20 and has called Paris home since swapping Napoli for PSG in 2013.

Cavani suffered a hip injury at the start of the season which paved the way for Inter outcast Mauro Icardi to join the club on loan as the summer transfer window drew to a close.

Icardi has since established himself as PSG's first choice No.9 with an impressive 20 goals in 30 appearances so far.

Former Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie believes Manchester United should try to sign Cavani when the transfer window opens in the summer.

Article continues below

"I would definitely go for Cavani [at Man Utd]; he's very fit, he's a proven goalscorer, a goal machine, he has proven it at Napoli, PSG and Uruguay," Van Persie told SPORTbible last month.

"With him, if he starts, he will get you 25 goals a season. I've watched him play, I've played against him, he is like a proper goalscorer. He lives by scoring goals so I'd go for him."

Cavani's PSG are currently out of action from Ligue 1 until mid-June because of the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe.

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 11:12 PM PDT

写真はイメージ(写真:jamesteohart/iStock)

America's terrible, growing coronavirus death toll makes Trump accept reality - CNN

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 10:41 PM PDT

Trump's extension of social distancing guidelines until April 30 is a highly significant move that means American life will remain shut down for at least a month, and probably longer.
Despite cascading humanitarian and political impacts of that decision, the devastating toll of the virus left Trump little choice -- even though some conservative backers have been urging him to ease lockdowns.
A President, who a month ago was predicting a miracle that would just make the virus go away, was presented with cataclysmic figures that 2.2 million Americans could die if he indulged his itch to start reopening the economy in the coming week.
"Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won," Trump, who last week repeatedly suggested that win was near, said Sunday, extending restrictions due to expire on Monday for another month at least.
Trump's decision to listen to his advisers will relieve public health officials and emergency physicians countrywide and shows that he is, in extremis, willing to listen to science -- in a way that would be a given for most presidents but has not been so for a commander-in-chief who has so often blurred truth.
Fact check: Trump falsely denies saying two things he said last week
The President appeared at a Sunday evening news briefing in which he rattled off multiple false statements, called corporate CEOs to the mic to praise his leadership and falsely and personally attacked journalists who asked him tough questions.
He also bizarrely appeared to accuse health workers of stealing surgical masks amid huge shortages brought on by terrible conditions in hospitals and accused states of "hoarding" ventilators. Trump also boasted about his own TV ratings.
His antics appeared especially questionable given the sobering apparent reality that tens of thousands of Americans will die in the coming weeks as the pandemic takes a terrible hold.
At a desperate moment in America's modern history, Trump appears to continue to be focused intently on his own political image, claiming personal credit and remaining highly sensitive to any form of criticism.
Trump's reversal appeared to be the latest occasion when his officials have brought flattery and the power of argument to bear to change his mind on leadership decisions that were apparently based on hunches and limited reasoning.
On Saturday for instance, he floated the idea of quarantining New York -- without consulting local officials, only for his subordinates to convince him the idea was not possible.

Trump concedes death toll could be 100,000 or more

Trump predicted the death rate in the US -- which doubled from Thursday to Sunday -- could peak within two weeks but the nation could get "to the bottom of the hill" by June 1.
Even that figure seems characteristically optimistic. "We should be so lucky," Rhode Island emergency physician Megan Ranney told CNN, pointing out that only even if social distancing were adopted nationwide now, two weeks was probably not sufficient for all of the most critical cases to emerge.
He had been desperate to start some county-by-county opening of the economy in the days to come. But the President's decision -- potentially a turning point in the nation's fight against the pandemic -- appears to have followed concerted lobbying by two top public health officials, Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx.
Trump predicted his decision would save hundreds of thousands of lives, in an apparent moving of the political goalposts to account for the fast worsening US pandemic.
"2.2 million people would have died if we didn't do what we are doing," the President said.
"If we can hold that number down ... to 100,000, it's a horrible number, maybe even less ... we all, all together have done a very good job," Trump said.
The new April 30 date marks yet another reversal of position on the pandemic by the President, who last week made clear he did not pick the Easter date, April 12, based on data but because it was a "beautiful timeline." Shrugging off his row back, Trump claimed Sunday that Easter had only been an "aspirational date."
Almost no one, who closely followed the science, modeling and data -- including governors, health experts and commentators thought Trump's original timeline was smart.
Fauci explained Sunday that the US death toll, based on modeling, could reach 100,000 deaths or more, a comment first made on CNN.
US could see millions of coronavirus cases and 100,000 or more deaths, Fauci says
"I think it's entirely conceivable that if we do not mitigate to the extent we are trying to do is that you could reach that number," Fauci said at the White House news conference.
He described Trump's decision as a wise and prudent one.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump's rationale for a county-by-county reopening of the economy was undercut by comments from his top official.
"I'm not against releasing the restrictions. I'm actually for it in an appropriate place. But I don't recommend it unless we have the tools in place in real time," Fauci said.
Birx also undermined the rationale for Trump's plan to put in place new recommendations for social distancing after options were presented to him during the weekend.
"We all are deeply concerned and why we've been raising the alert in all metro areas and in all states," Birx said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."
"No state, no metro area will be spared," Birx said. "At this moment, we are asking every single governor and every single mayor to prepare like New York is preparing now."

Pelosi claims Trump 'fiddles' while people die

The darkening mood over the pandemic did not convince Trump to moderate his extreme political rhetoric.
On Sunday, two journalists, Yamiche Alcindor of the PBS NewsHour and CNN's Jeremy Diamond, read the President's own controversial comments back to him -- which he denied in real-time on television.
"We're getting the word out. We're getting the accurate word out," Trump told reporters.
In another example of the President being corrected, he said last week on Fox News that he just didn't believe calls for 30,000 new ventilators, apparently referring to warnings of a shortage of the life saving equipment from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Fauci effectively corrected Trump on Sunday.
"I tend to believe Governor Cuomo," Fauci told CNN.
"One way or the other, he needs the ventilators that he needs. And, hopefully, we will get him the ventilators that he needs."
Civil liberties in the time of coronavirus
The generational challenge of the coronavirus pandemic would have tested any administration. And any President would have racked up failures under such intense pressure.
But Trump's incessantly confusing positions, claims of huge personal success and willingness to politicize are raising scrutiny of his own administration's performance.
His litany of false statements and misleading statistics -- for instance his claim the US had tested far more people than South Korea -- even though on a per capita basis the US figure is far lower, also focus criticism on his handling of the situation.
The President again celebrating what he says is the low mortality rate in the US comes across as in poor taste when the death toll in the United States is soaring.
Trump is not the only senior political leader willing to inject explosive political language into the debate.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday highlighted Trump's initial handling of the epidemic in her own interview with CNN, which contained exceedingly strong language.
"The President, his denial at the beginning, was deadly. His delaying of getting equipment to where it -- it continues, his delay in getting equipment to where it's needed is deadly," Pelosi told Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union."
"As the President fiddles, people are dying and we have to, we just have to take every precaution," Pelosi said.

UPDATE 2-Plane explosion in Philippines kills eight, including two foreigners - Reuters

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 09:42 PM PDT

(Adds detail from press briefing)

MANILA, March 29 (Reuters) - A medical evacuation plane exploded during take-off in the Philippine capital on Sunday, killing all eight passengers and crew, including an American and a Canadian, officials said.

The plane, owned by a Philippines-registered charter service Lionair, had been bound for Haneda, Japan, but burst into flames at the end of the runway around 8 p.m. (1200 GMT), Manila's main airport said.

Indonesian carrier Lion Air issued a statement making clear that it is unrelated to Manila-based Lionair.

Video footage showed a huge plume of smoke rising into the night sky as fire crews doused the fuselage with foam.

The twin-jet West Wind 24 plane was carrying three medical personnel, three flight crew, a patient and a companion, Richard Gordon, a senator and head of the Philippine Red Cross, said on Twitter.

"Unfortunately, no passenger survived the accident," the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said in a statement.

An investigation by the Civil Aeronautics Authority of the Philippines was under way, MIAA said.

The runway has been closed temporarily, affecting an arriving Korean Air flight that was diverted to Clark airport in northern Philippines, said MIAA General Manager Eddie Monreal.

The aim is to reopen the runway about two hours after midnight, he said in a press briefing.

Monreal confirmed that an American national and a Canadian citizen were among those killed, but could not provide further detail. The six others were all Filipinos, he said.

The essential guide to mobile games for social-distancing non-gamers - Salon

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 08:50 PM PDT

We are living in a strange moment in history. In the face of COVID-19 many of us are withdrawing into our homes. Some of us suddenly have a surplus of time. While leisure might have once seemed like an unachievable goal, it now has an unsettling, tenuous quality: Rather than being born out of a desire for relaxation, it is the result of a slow-down that was forced upon us. Around the country and around the world, many of us are in a position where we are sequestered and desperately seeking new kinds of distraction.

In my forthcoming book, "Play Like a Feminist," I argue that playing more games (in every way imaginable) is of import to feminists: It is an issue of equality and quality of life, and one essential to restructuring the flawed nature of the video game industry. To that end, I argue that feminists need to find time and space to play more, and to create more opportunities for play for those around them. While my book could not possibly have anticipated the strange crisis of our current moment, I would like to suggest that some of you can use this opportunity to find ways to deliberately play more and do it on devices that you already own.

Advertisement:

The problem is finding the right place to start. As a woman who has researched video games for more than a decade, I get many requests for recommendations from unlikely players. Most of the people who ask are not "hardcore gamers" — they are people who might be called "game curious" (a term that I have borrowed from movements based out of Toronto and Montreal). But, while the game curious might want to experiment with digital leisure, they don't always know where to start: The Apple Store can be daunting and online lists work under the assumption that players understand the terminology, play styles, and the lineage of past games.

The following suggestions are for excellent games, meant for those who don't play a lot. Some of them are artful and literary. Some of them are weird. Many are sweet and thoughtful. Most of them are engaging and might, perhaps, help to distract you in ways that will help you survive the next month (or longer). At the same time, I hope, many of the games I'm listing here might convince you that video games are important, and that playing and promoting play is an activist concern.

The following list is broken up by price points, for those who want to invest nothing, a little, or a bit more in your playful distractions.

Advertisement:

FREE-TO-PLAY MOBILE GAMES

While people are often dismissive of free-to-play (F2P) mobile games, they can be quite satisfying: not just as ways to "waste time" but as satisfying ways to meditate. Match-3 and puzzle games help to control our focus and relax us. At the same time, the organizational mechanics can be satisfying and give us a sense of control over the world around us.

"Dash Adventures"

Advertisement:

The latest in the Diner Dash franchise is fast paced, funny, and cute. The player is a waitress managing customers, which is more fun than you might think. A good game for those of you looking to feel productive in this unproductive moment.

"Dots & Co."

Advertisement:

The games in the Dots franchise are a calmer, less visually stimulating version of the Match-3 style of game. The design is minimalist, the colors and animations are not visually overwhelming, and the game is a relaxing way to meditate while you play.

"Hungry Babies Mania"

A match-3 game with some excellent twists, and more levels than you could ever dream of. While you match fruits in a line, you can simultaneously feed grateful, cute, baby animals.

Advertisement:

"Polar Pop Mania"

An excellent bubble shooter game that is light on narrative and has excellent physics. By tossing balls into the air you save cute baby seals on behalf of a mother seal; breaking them free gives a nice satisfying rush.

INEXPENSIVE MOBILE GAMES (under $5)

Advertisement:

There are a lot of independent, smaller, mobile games that are artful, literary, and satisfying. Here are a few to consider.

"Donut County"

A weird and hilarious game where you play as a hole in the ground, sucking up everything around you; an apt metaphor for the current zeitgeist. Swallowing up the world into giant holes is the best possible way to spend a few weeks, and the game is still fun on replay.

"Gorogoa"

Advertisement:

A gorgeous silent puzzle game that involves rearranging hand-drawn squares as it tells you a story. It takes a while to get a hang of how to play, but once you get into it, the puzzles are absorbing and visually stunning. If you are going to stare at a screen, this is one of the best ways to do it.

"Hexologic"

A cool number logic game that would appeal to fans of Sudoku. The game is quiet and relaxing and thoughtful, and it is easy to get lost in. The surrounding art is calming and minimalist, and the logic puzzles are increasingly challenging.

"Monument Valley" (1 & 2)

Advertisement:

The Monument Valley games are breathtakingly beautiful puzzles that have the player navigate through Escher-esque castles and landscapes. Looking at the structures and spaces differently yields answers, making it a game that helps us remember to keep perspective.

"Ticket to Ride"

The digital version of the popular board game has an excellent online version; you can multiplayer online with friends asynchronously. I always have at least two versions of the game playing in my everyday life, and you can play with bots if your friends aren't available. When you get bored of the U.S. Map, alternate maps are available for purchase.

"Rusty Lake Paradise" (or any of the Rusty Lake games)

Advertisement:

The "Rusty Lake" games are puzzle adventures that feel like it was made by the progeny of Edward Gorey. Rusty Lake Paradise is my personal favorite of the series; it is weird, a bit bloody, and oddly funny little puzzles.

MID-PRICE MOBILE GAMES ($5–$15)

If you are willing to spend a little bit more money, you can have some truly excellent experiences on your mobile device. Here are a few suggestions.

"Stardew Valley"

"Stardew Valley" is the darling of independent games. It is a deeply involved farming game that involves magical realism and romance. If you are looking to get sucked into an easy, adorable game world for the next month this is the best thing money can buy you.

"Oxenfree"

"Oxenfree" is an emotionally engaging ghost story adventure game with multiple looping endings. The trick of it is that how you respond to other characters (if you are nice, mean, indifferent) changes the possibilities of how the story goes. The story involves a group of teens on an abandoned island, trying to navigate some malcontent spirits.

"Broken Age"

A deep adventure game where you rotate playing between two protagonists in an absurdist, hilarious, fantasy world. The game is about 10 hours of combined playtime, and is funny, sweet, and has a satisfying narrative conclusion.

"Professor Layton: Curious Village"

A story game where you play a detective, solving a larger puzzle in a small town by figuring out the solutions to short riddles. Some of the riddles might be familiar, others are new but the overlay of the cute villagers offering brainteasers is just the right level of fun. There are several other games in this franchise.

* * *

In addition, it is also worth mentioning that iOS has Apple Arcade that is $5 a month for unlimited games — there are some excellent options available, such as "Sayonara Wild Hearts," "Patterned," "Jenny LeClue," and "Sneaky Sasquatch."

Regardless of what you choose, remember that there are things to do on our screens beyond refreshing the news and scrolling social media. Video games are not all just violent, gun-filled explosions. Try a few experiences, expand your world, and escape for a while.

Trump concedes US coronavirus death toll could be 100,000 or more - CNN

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 08:11 PM PDT

Trump's assertion came after he was asked about comments the nation's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, made earlier Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" that based on models, 100,000 Americans or more could die from the virus.
On Sunday, Trump said during an evening news conference at the White House that he'd decided to extend the nationwide social distancing guidelines -- which include suggested limits on large gatherings -- for another 30 days to April 30.
During his news conference, Trump said he received what he called the "most accurate" or "most comprehensive" study today about the potential death toll from Covid-19.
US could see millions of coronavirus cases and 100,000 or more deaths, Fauci says
He said there could be up more than 2 million cases if "we did nothing" but he did not give more details on the exact number. Fauci told CNN earlier Sunday that the US could see millions of cases of coronavirus in the US.
Trump extends federal social distancing guidelines to April 30
"When I heard the number today. First time I heard that number, because I have been asking the same question to some people. I felt even better about what we did last week with the $2.2 trillion dollars," Trump said in reference to the historic stimulus package passed by Congress last week. "Because you are talking about a potential of up to 2.2 million and some people said it could even be higher than that. You are talking about 2.2 million deaths. 2.2 million people from this," Trump said.
This story has been updated with additional details from Trump's Sunday news conference.

US extends stay-at-home guidelines to end of April to fight virus - Kyodo News Plus

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 07:11 PM PDT

The U.S. government on Sunday extended to April 30 its guidelines asking people to stay at home and practice social distancing, citing an estimate that 2.2 million people could die in the absence of measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

President Donald Trump had earlier said that he hoped to get the country "back to work" by mid-April but he backed off from the goal with the United States becoming the country with the highest number of infections in the world.

(New York)

"The peak, the highest point of death rates...is likely to hit in two weeks...Therefore, we will be extending our guidelines to April 30 to slow the spread," Trump said during a press conference at the White House.

He added that he believes "by June 1 we will be well on our way to recovery."

On March 16, the Trump administration rolled out its 15-day guidance aimed at slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus, calling for people to work or engage in schooling from home whenever possible and to avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 people.

States across the country have taken tougher actions by issuing stay-at-home orders. By Monday, at least 27 of the nation's 50 states will have such orders in effect, affecting more than 225 million people, or over two-thirds of the U.S. population, according to CNN.

The number of confirmed infection cases in the United States has been rapidly rising from earlier this month, partly on the back of enhanced testing. It has now exceeded 140,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University researchers.

The death toll eclipsed 2,400, but is lower than other hard-hit countries such as Italy, where more than 10,000 people have died, and China, where more than 3,000 deaths have been reported, the tally showed.

No alcohol, dates for actress in almost a decade - The Straits Times

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 07:02 PM PDT

South Korean actress Yoon Eun-hye, best known for hit dramas like Princess Hours (2006) and Coffee Prince (2007), revealed recently on a talk show she has not drunk alcohol or dated in eight years.

Yoon, 35, was on an episode of South Korean talk show Radio Star, reportedly her first appearance on a variety show in three years.

According to Korean entertainment news portal Soompi, she said she was once dependent on alcohol to sleep. "It's been eight years since I quit drinking. At the time, it wasn't that I drank because I enjoyed it but, rather, because I had severe insomnia," she said, alluding to mental-health troubles and the pressure to be perfect for the public.

In 2015, she was blasted for an item she created for Chinese fashion design programme Goddess Fashion. She was accused of plagiarising the design of the item, a white jacket with frilly sleeves, from South Korean fashion designer Yoon Choon-ho.

In the talk show, Yoon said she did not want to get drunk but wanted to "feel comfortable" enough to doze off. So she mixed various types of alcohol - beer, wine, champagne and soju - to help her sleep.

She later contemplated quitting alcohol and did so for a week. She said: "During that time, my insomnia was cured. I don't know if it was because of (quitting) alcohol, but my mind felt at ease. After changing my lifestyle, I could sleep easily. I really liked that and stopped drinking alcohol."

Yoon has since sworn off alcohol and will spit out chocolate if she tastes alcohol in them.

Quitting alcohol also means she has stopped going to social gatherings and bars where drinking is common. She said: "My dating life has also naturally ended too."

She said no one had asked her out or asked for her mobile number in eight years and, due to her years of being single, she now gets nervous when filming romantic or physically affectionate scenes in dramas.

Her last major series, Love Alert (2018), saw her and actor Chun Jung-myung share romantic scenes.

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Coronavirus: Latest updates from around the world - Prestwich and Whitefield Guide

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:41 PM PDT

Worldwide coronavirus infections have surpassed the 660,000 mark, with more than 30,000 deaths as new cases, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Here is the latest on the situation from around the world:

– Canada

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he will continue to self-isolate at home even though his wife has recovered from the coronavirus.

Mr Trudeau said although he was careful, he will remain in isolation for now because he was in the same home as someone who tested positive.

Mr Trudeau said wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau has taken their three children to the prime minister's summer residence in Harrington Lake, Quebec.

Sophie Trudeau received clearance from her doctor and Ottawa Public Health on Saturday.

– US

The US government's foremost infection disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, says the US will certainly have "millions of cases" of Covid-19 and more than 100,000 deaths.

As the US tops the world in reported infections from the new coronavirus, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases predicts 100,000-200,000 deaths from the outbreak in the US.

The US is currently reporting more than 124,000 cases and more than 2,100 deaths.

Dr Fauci was speaking to CNN's State Of The Union as the federal government is discussing rolling back guidelines on social distancing in areas that have not been hard-hit by the outbreak.

Dr Fauci says he would only support the rollback in lesser-impacted areas if there is enhanced availability of testing in place to monitor those areas. He acknowledged "it's a little iffy there" right now.

– Portugal

The Portuguese health minister has said a 14-year-old boy with Covid-19 has died. Authorities said the boy had prior health conditions.

Minister Marta Temido said the boy tested positive for the coronavirus but health expert still need to investigate if he died of the disease caused by the virus or other health problems.

Portugal reported on Sunday it has 119 total deaths from the virus and 38,042 infections.

– North Macedonia

North Macedonia has reported two more deaths to raise the death toll to six. They are both men in their 30s.

More than 9,000 people in the country of 2.1 million are in quarantine or in self-isolation. The country is also under curfew.

– Serbia

Pet owners in Serbia are furious over the populist government's decision to ban even a brief walk for people with dogs during an evening curfew to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

Angry dog owners have flooded social networks, warning that the ban could harm their dogs' health and cause frustration and anxiety for both the animals and their owners.

Veterinarian Nenad Milojkovic said protecting animal rights is a test for a society during hard times such as an epidemic. He said skipping the evening walk could worsen the condition for the dogs with urinary problems and "aggravate basic hygienic conditions in people's homes."

Serbia's government made the decision on Saturday, revoking a previously introduced 20-minute permission for dog owners to walk their pets.

Serbia has imposed some of the harshest measures in Europe against the spread of the new coronavirus, including a total ban on movement for people over 65 years and a curfew from 5pm until 5am.

– Norway

Norwegian health authorities say they are set to start performing random coronavirus tests, following the experiment Iceland has done.

Citing officials at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Norwegian public broadcaster NRK said on Sunday such random testing among all citizens will provide answers to two key questions: how many of those who appear to be infected actually have the coronavirus and how wide the spread of the virus is.

NRK said Iceland, with its 12,000 random tests among its population of 340,000, has the largest number of tests per capita in the world. Norway, a nation of 5.4 million, has so far reported 4,054 coronavirus cases with 25 deaths.

Virus Outbreak Vatican

– Vatican City

Pope Francis is backing the UN chief's call for a ceasefire in all conflicts raging across the globe to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. He also said his thoughts are with those constrained to live in groups, citing in particular rest homes for the elderly, military barracks and jails.

During his traditional Sunday blessing, the Pope called for "the creation of humanitarian aid corridors, the opening of diplomacy and attention to those who are in situations of great vulnerability".

He cited UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres's appeal this past week for a global truce "to focus together on the true fight of our lives" against the coronavirus.

Francis, as he has throughout most of the coronavirus emergency due to bans on public gatherings, addressed the faithful from his private library in the Apostolic Palace, and not from a window overlooking St Peter's Square as is tradition.

– Spain

Spain says it has hit a new daily record for coronavirus deaths, with 838 fatalities in the last 24 hours for a total of 6,528, the world's second-highest death count behind Italy.

Sunday's number is slightly up from Saturday, when 832 people were reported to have died from the virus.

Virus Outbreak Spain

The number of infections rose by more than 6,500 from Saturday to Sunday for a new total of 78,797. The rate of that increase in infections, however, continues to decrease.

Spain has been in lockdown for two weeks under a national state of emergency.

Prime minister Pedro Sanchez's Cabinet will approve on Sunday a new decree to tighten those controls and impede workers from commuting to work in all industries unrelated to health care and food production and distribution, for two weeks.

– Australia

Australia has announced that public gatherings will be limited to two people, down from 10, and has enacted a six-month moratorium on evictions for those who cannot pay their rent.

Prime minister Scott Morrison announced the new measures on Sunday night after earlier in the day flagging a 1.1 billion Australian dollar (£546 million) welfare package.

Australia had 3,966 confirmed cases of the virus as of Sunday, including 16 deaths.

– India

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi apologised to the public on Sunday for imposing a three-week national lockdown.

"I apologise for taking these harsh steps that have caused difficulties in your lives, especially the poor people," Mr Modi said in his monthly address, broadcast by state radio. "I know some of you will be angry with me. But these tough measures were needed to win this battle."

Virus Outbreak India

The unprecedented lockdown order, which came into effect on Wednesday to keep India's 1.3 billion people at home for all but essential trips, is meant to prevent the spread of the virus from surging and overwhelming India's already strained healthcare system.

Health officials have confirmed 867 cases of coronavirus, including 25 deaths. Experts have said local spreading is inevitable in a country where tens of millions of people live in dense urban areas in cramped conditions with irregular access to clean water.

The lockdown has caused tens of thousands of people, mostly young male day labourers but also families, to flee their New Delhi homes, and has effectively put millions of Indians who live off daily earnings out of work.

– Sweden

The coronavirus pandemic is not keeping Swedes at home. The Swedish authorities have advised the public to practise social distancing and to work from home, if possible, and urged those over age 70 to self-isolate as a precaution.

"Sweden is an outlier on the European scene, at least," said Johan Giesecke, the country's former chief epidemiologist and now adviser to the Swedish Health Agency, a government body. "And I think that's good."

Prime minister Stefan Lofven, warning of "many tough weeks and months ahead," announced Friday that as of Sunday, gatherings would be limited to 50 people instead of 500. The government said weddings, funerals and Easter celebrations would be affected.

For now, the Swedish government maintains that citizens can be trusted to exercise responsibility for the greater good and will stay at home if they experience any Covid-19 symptoms.

– New Zealand

New Zealand has reported its first death from Covid-19. Health authorities said Sunday the victim was a woman in her 70s.

She was admitted to a West Coast hospital last week with what they initially thought was flu, and hospital staff did not wear full protective equipment.

As a result, 21 members of staff have been put in self-isolation for two weeks.

The country has reported 514 cases of Covid-19. Last Wednesday, New Zealanders began a strict four-week lockdown.

– China

The city at the centre of China's coronavirus outbreak has reopened tube trains and long-distance train services in another step towards ending restrictions that confined millions of people to their homes.

Virus Outbreak China
China is allowing people who were under lockdown in Hubei to leave the province at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak (Ng Han Guan/AP))

Passengers in Wuhan in the central province of Hubei had to wear masks and be checked for fever after service resumed Saturday, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

It said signs were posted telling passengers to sit with empty seats between them.

Most access to Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, was suspended on January 23.  The last controls that block residents of Wuhan from leaving Hubei are due to be lifted on April 8.

Meanwhile, the first cargo train to Europe since the start of the outbreak left for Germany on Saturday carrying car parts, electronic productions, optical communication fibre and medical supplies, Xinhua reported.

– Canada

The wife of Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has said that she has recovered from being ill with Covid-19.

"I am feeling so much better," Sophie Gregoire Trudeau said in a statement on social media. She said she received the clearance from her doctor and Ottawa Public Health.

Mr Trudeau's office announced on March 12 that she had tested positive for coronavirus after she fell ill after returning from a trip to London.

The prime minister and his family have been in self-isolation at home since then. He and their three children did not show symptoms.

Canada has more than 5,616 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 61 deaths. About 445 people have recovered.

– Brazil

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has staked out the most deliberately dismissive position of any major world leader, calling the coronavirus pandemic a momentary, minor problem and saying strong measures to contain it are unnecessary.

Mr Bolsonaro called it "a little flu" and said state governors' aggressive measures to halt the disease were crimes.

Virus Outbreak Brazil

Mr Bolsonaro said he feels Brazilians' natural immunity will protect the nation.

"The Brazilian needs to be studied. He doesn't catch anything. You see a guy jumping into sewage, diving in, right? Nothing happens to him. I think a lot of people were already infected in Brazil, weeks or months ago, and they already have the antibodies that help it not proliferate," Mr Bolsonaro said.

"I'm hopeful that's really a reality."

– Pakistan

Pakistan has said the number of people testing positive for Covid-19 is increasing, raising the country's total number of confirmed patients to 1,495.

Health authorities also report another death of a man in the country's commercial hub, Karachi, increasing the death toll to 12.

A breakout shows the largest Punjab province has 557 patients, and southern Sindh province has 469.

Southwestern Baluchistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, has 133, and Khyber Pakhtukhwa, which borders Afghanistan, has 188. The Gilgit Baltistan region has 107 patients, while the federal capital, Islamabad, has 39. Pakistan controlled Kashmir has two confirmed cases.

The count shows there is an increase of 87 cases, with seven of the patients stated to be in critical condition.

Germany Virus Outbreak
Angela Merkel during the recording of her first direct TV address to the nation (Bundesregierung/Steffen Kugler/AP)

– Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in her first address to the nation on the coronavirus pandemic, calmly appealed to citizens' reason and discipline to slow the spread of the virus.

She acknowledged, as a woman who grew up in communist East Germany, how difficult it is to give up freedoms, yet as a trained scientist emphasised that the facts do not lie.

Then she popped into her local supermarket to pick up food, wine and toilet paper to take back to her Berlin apartment.

For her, it was a regular shopping trip, but photos snapped by someone at the grocery shop were shared worldwide as a reassuring sign of calm leadership amid a global crisis.

Salonen: In light of viral enemy, divisions disappear - INFORUM

Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I lack the source or exact wording, but this quote has never been more fitting. An enemy has entered the room: COVID-19.

Neither the name nor disease have been around long, but this new, invisible viral enemy, conniving as it is unpredictable, has us firmly in its grip.

Along with all of the horrifying negatives of this silent foe, however, some positives have become evident. One being, since the enemy has indeed entered the room, there's no more place for division. None. Nada. We're in this together.

At the beginning of the month, we were still duking it out over politics, not to mention a host of other things that had separated us brothers and sisters. Remember those days? Well, they're gone – or should be. They no longer matter. This relentless enemy, though it's wreaked havoc and will continue to, has done us one huge favor in knocking out our familial in-fighting.

WDAY logo

listen live

watch live

We had become so sadly at odds with one another. Something had to bring us back together. I'm not suggesting God caused this. I'm one who believes God doesn't bring death and destruction, but rather, with free will firmly in place, lets humanity make its choices, allowing us to self-destruct on our own. But when we humble ourselves and appeal to him, he promises unfailing accompaniment, grace and mercy, especially when we repent.

Click for more coronavirus stories.

And by the way, that's another thing our enemy has prompted: the realization that, for most, there's still time to turn to our loving Father. But the window is closing. For some, it already has. I don't believe fear should be the reason we come to God, but the fear many of us feel now can be a wake-up call to remember things we know deep down.

God is real. This life can be hard. In fact, it's mostly hard, with times of reprieve and joy sprinkled in. But another, better life awaits, and if we let God lead, we will enjoy the abundant life and the promises to come.

I want to say something while I still can, because we really don't know, do we? Each day, each moment, is truly in God's hands. To those who have prayed for and stood by me in times of discord, thank you; I am praying for you. To those who have seen me or those with whom I'm connected as the enemy, I am praying for you, too. All is forgiven. We are human, and there's still time to love.

Matthew 10:28 implores us to not be afraid of what can kill the body but not the soul. Let's strengthen our souls and turn to God. Let's join hands and face this silent foe together, remembering who we are, and whose we are, relinquishing our arms and being merciful to one another.

The time has come to reunite. God be with you all as we face the hard things to come.

All-star actor and America's dad Tom Hanks shared with fans over the weekend he and wife Rita Wilson have returned to the United States just two weeks after sharing their coronavirus diagnosis. Previously, the A-list couple had been in quarantine after landing in Australia so Hanks could begin working on Baz Lurhmann's new Elvis Presley biopic starring Austin Butler.

On Saturday, Hanks gave fans a big update on Twitter, revealing he and Wilson are back on U.S. soil after two weeks in quarantine. The actor's statement reads, "Hey folks… We're home now and, like the rest of America, we carry on with sheltering in place and social distancing. Many, many thanks to everyone in Australia who looked after us. Their care and guidance made possible our return to the USA. And many thanks to all of you who reached out with well wishes. Rita and I so appreciate it. Hanx."

Hanks and Wilson were the first celebrities to go public with their coronavirus diagnosis, with Hanks sharing the news on social media on March 12. The couple went into quarantine shortly after landing in Australia, with Hanks updating to his followers in the following days on how he and Wilson were spending their time while being treated for the virus. Shortly after Hanks and Wilson went public with their diagnosis, celebrities including Idris ElbaOlga KurylenkoKristofer Hivju, and Daniel Dae Kim all revealed on social media their respective positive coronavirus diagnoses while urging their fans to help prevent the spread of the virus by staying at home and/or social distancing.

As for Luhrmann's Presley biopic? The future of the movie is in limbo, as is the case with many movie and television projects in all stages of production. The movie was in the midst of filming when Hanks touched down in Australia, but was quickly shut down following the actor's coronavirus diagnosis.
