Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, Wife of Canada’s Leader, Tests Positive for Coronavirus - The New York Times

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 11:26 PM PDT

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will remain in isolation for the next two weeks after Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, his wife, tested positive for the new coronavirus, his office said in a statement on Thursday.

Ms. Grégoire Trudeau became mildly ill on Wednesday and physicians tested her for the virus after she developed a low fever which has since passed. The couple voluntarily isolated themselves on Thursday.

Last week, Ms. Grégoire Trudeau attended a charity event in Britain with her daughter, Ella-Grace, and Margaret Trudeau, the prime minister's mother. She was part of a panel with Julia Gillard, the former Australian prime minister, and posed for a photograph in a small group that included Lewis Hamilton, the Formula One driver.

The statement said that while Mr. Trudeau showed no signs of illness, physicians recommended that he remain in isolation as a precautionary measure. Because he has no symptoms, Mr. Trudeau will not be tested for now and, according to the statement, doctors do not believe that anyone with whom he has been in contact is in danger.

While he was absent from the House of Commons on Wednesday, Mr. Trudeau nevertheless carried on with his duties by telephone and computer. A Friday meeting with provincial leaders that will likely be dominated by the coronavirus situation has been turned into a conference call.

Canada currently has relatively few cases, just 138. But Mr. Trudeau is among many government officials who have been affected one way or another by the virus.

In Italy, which remains under a nationwide lockdown because of the virus, Nicola Zingaretti, the leader of the governing coalition's Democratic Party, said he has tested positive and some members of that country's Parliament have been quarantined.

In Britain Nadine Dorries, a health minister, has also come down with the contagion. Several members of Iran's senior leadership, including the deputy health minister, have also been found to have Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.

A senior Brazilian government official who visited Mar-a-Lago days ago, and was in proximity to President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, has tested positive for the coronavirus, Brazil's government confirmed on Thursday.

Some members of Mr. Trudeau's cabinet are in precautionary isolation as is Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada's New Democratic Party.

Among the tasks Mr. Trudeau fulfilled from home were calls about the health crisis with President Trump, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte of Italy and Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain.

If Mr. Trudeau does fall ill and is unable to work, his cabinet must choose an acting prime minister. The role will most likely be fulfilled by Chrystia Freeland, the deputy prime minister.

Gatherings of more than 500 people should be cancelled from Monday - Shepparton News

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 11:26 PM PDT

All non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people should be cancelled from Monday following advice from Australia's chief medical officer Brendan Murphy.

Prof Murphy recommended to the nation's leaders all gatherings of more than 500 people should be banned to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Following Prof Murphy's advice, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the gathering cancellation would start on Monday.

"That, of course, doesn't include schools. It doesn't include university lectures. It doesn't mean people getting on public transport or going to airports or things of that nature," Mr Morrison told reporters.

A new national cabinet made up of the prime minister, premiers and chief ministers will meet on Sunday to decide how to put in place arrangements to cope with this.

Mr Morrison said the advice from Monday was part of a stepped response.

"We are not of great concern right now in terms of where those gatherings might be today, but in the weeks ahead, this will change," he said.

Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy said his advice was very much only around non-essential events.

He said the current evidence was that community transmission of the coronavirus was not widespread in Australia.

"But all international evidence suggests that if you have some community transmission, the way in which it can be spread more rapidly is in very large events," he said.

"You might only have one or two people at a very large event who might be carrying the virus, and the chance of it being spread at those large events accelerates the rate of progression of this virus."

Australians are being told to reconsider their need to travel overseas unless it is essential.

The Council of Australian Governments was given the advice during a meeting in western Sydney on Friday, where Prime Minister Scott Morrison, premiers and chief ministers have been considering how best to respond to the health crisis.

The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne was cancelled this morning and Australia's major sporting codes are all weighing up whether to follow suit.

More to come.

 2月1日、都内で『SAJ(スポーツアナリティクスジャパン)2020』が開催された。

2020 Japan Sports Analyst Association. All Rights Reserved

All Rights Reserved(下の画像はアビームコンサルティングの発表資料より抜粋)

LDS Church suspends all worship services worldwide due to coronavirus - Salt Lake Tribune

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:26 PM PDT

Editor's note • The Salt Lake Tribune is providing readers free access to critical local stories about the coronavirus during this time of heightened concern. See more coverage here.

To help combat the coronavirus pandemic, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is suspending public gatherings of church members worldwide "until further notice," the Utah-based faith said in a statement Thursday.

That means canceling all Sunday services and midweek activities for more than 30,000 congregations across the globe, not just in the faith's Beehive State headquarters.

The sweeping move extends beyond the recommendation of Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, who earlier in the day called for an end to all gatherings — including houses of worship — in his state of more than 100 people for at least two weeks.

Other religious leaders in the state responded accordingly — even as Christian churches prepare for Holy Week next month and their most sacred holiday, Easter.

"Catholic school facilities will close," Solis said, "and instruction to students will be provided remotely."

(Leah Hogsten | Tribune file photo) Students from The Madeleine Choir School receive their ashen signs of the cross during noon Mass on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020 at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.

The clergy's "overarching concern was for the safety and well-being of the people," Hayashi said. "We are devising ways to serve the spiritual needs of our people, especially those who are isolated."

The cleric encouraged his priests to reach out to provide groceries to those in need, to continue telephone contact so no one feels abandoned, and to remain in the churches in case people came there to pray or meditate.

"Our primary moral motivation," Hayashi said, "is the primacy of love for the neighbor."

The bishop himself has to "self-quarantine for two weeks because of a developing dry cough," he said in a Facebook message. "I took the COVID-19 test, but results will not be back until tomorrow."

As of Thursday, Hayashi said, he "feels fine and is not alarmed."

The mandatory five daily prayers and Friday afternoon prayer will continue at the Utah Islamic Center in Sandy, said Imam Shuaib Din, but Muslims do not have to go to the mosque to do them.

Services at Christ United Methodist Church in east Salt Lake City will continue this weekend, with livestreaming available to attendees who prefer to do that, said the Rev. Rusty Butler, noting that a total of about 250 people participate in three services each Sunday. "It's a fluid situation, and we will reevaluate for next week."

The Rev. Oscar T. Moses, the new pastor at Salt Lake City's Calvary Baptist Church, said the congregational leaders planned to meet Thursday evening to decide whether to cancel Sunday services, which attract more than 100 each week.

As for Utah's predominant faith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in a news release that "beginning immediately, all public gatherings of church members are being temporarily suspended worldwide until further notice."

That includes stake conferences, leadership conferences and other large gatherings; all public worship services, including sacrament meetings; and local congregational activities of branches, wards and regional stakes.

Local Latter-day Saint leaders, where possible, should meet "via technology," the governing First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said. "Bishops should counsel with their stake president to determine how to make the sacrament [Communion] available at least once a month."

"We encourage members in their ministering efforts to care for one another. We should follow the Savior's example to bless and lift others," they said in their release Thursday. "We bear our witness of the Lord's love during this time of uncertainty. He will bless you to find joy as you do your best to live the gospel of Jesus Christ in every circumstance."

The church also has been adding to its list of closed temples for weeks now. More than a dozen are shut down, but scores more remain open in Utah and around the world.

Unlike regular meetinghouses, these temples, which often involve more than 100 people in religious rituals that require hand touching, are seen as "Houses of the Lord," places where devout Latter-day Saints take part in their faith's most sacred ordinances, including eternal marriage.

The Controversy Over GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy's 'Chinese Coronavirus' Tweet, Explained - Capital Public Radio News

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 08:56 PM PDT

If Your Time Is Short

  • Rep. Kevin McCarthy called the novel coronavirus "the Chinese coronavirus," causing some lawmakers to call for him to aplogize for what they described as a racist, xenophobic tweet.
  • Some said McCarthy's words perpetuate stereotypes against Asian-Americans and could be dangerous.
  • McCarthy responded to the backlash saying he stands by his description.

GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield is facing calls this week to apologize for and delete a tweet in which he called the novel coronavirus "the Chinese coronavirus," a description some say is racist and xenaphobic.

COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, was first identified in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province. It has since spread to more than 100 countries and affects all races and ethnicities.

With controversy around his tweet growing, McCarthy said on Tuesday he stands by his description, adding "Democrats are trying to score political points by calling Republicans racist."

PolitiFact California examined McCarthy's statement, the reaction to it and what some say are its potentially dangerous consequences.

What Did Rep. Kevin McCarthy Say?

McCarthy sent out his tweet March 8 linking to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control website on the coronavirus.

What Was The Reaction?

Some lawmakers, including members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus [CAPAC], labeled it disrespectful and threatening.

"Your words are so hurtful. We may be of different parties but people depend on all of us to be compassionate & effective leaders. Asian Americans - from kids to seniors are getting attacked bc of this exact type of rhetoric. Do better - please - i implore you. Lives are at stake," Rep. Grace Meng, a Democrat from New York responded on Twitter

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted that "bigoted statements which spread misinformation and blame Asians and the Asian American community" for coronavirus "make us all less safe." She called on McCarthy to "delete this tweet and apologize immediately."

This is not the first time lawmakers have raised similar concerns. CAPAC sent a letter to every member of Congress last month asking them "not to stoke xenophobia or spread misinformation," about the novel coronavirus, according to the group's press release

Rep. Judy Chu, D-Los Angeles, for example, urged McCarthy to "listen to the advice of actual experts and only refer to COVID-19 by its official names."

The group's letter cited "the rise in racial prejudice and violent attacks against Asian Americans in the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak."

Following McCarthy's tweet, this week leaders from CAPAC —, along with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Native American Caucus, and Congressional Progressive Caucus — all called on the congressman to apologize. They also urged GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona to apologize for calling the virus the "Wuhan Virus."

How Did McCarthy Respond To The Backlash?

McCarthy responded to the criticism with another tweet on March 10.

"Here we go again.→ Democrats are trying to score political points by calling Republicans racist.

Coronavirus is a China-born disease—made worse by a Communist Party that rejected America's help to contain it.

Which is why Dems & media called it "Chinese coronavirus" for weeks."

To support his last claim, McCarthy showed images of news headlines from The Washington Post and The New York Times that included the phrase "Chinese Coronavirus" or "Wuhan Coronavirus." The headlines did, in fact, include those phrases. The Times articles, however, are from January,  before some news outlets moved away from the terms over concerns about the stigma they carry. The Post article is from late February and no longer includes the description.

McCarthy also pointed to a hearing on Feb. 5 by a Democratic-controlled House subcommittee, titled: The Wuhan Coronavirus: Assessing the Outbreak, the Response, and Regional Implications

McCarthy has issued subsequent tweets about the novel coronavirus, without describing it as "the Chinese coronavirus."

'The Virus Can Affect All People'

Sacramento State professor of Ethnic Studies Timothy Fong said McCarthy's words, if the congressman does not disavow them, have the potential to perpetuate hostility against Asian Americans.

"I can see why people are calling for an apology," Fong said. "There's a great amount of fear, anxiety and concern around the coronavirus. It really is a time for us to support one another and not divide people. The virus can affect all people, not just one group."

Some defended McCarthy's statement, saying viruses are named after their location of origin, pointing to the Spanish flu and West Nile virus. But while the Spanish flu, which killed 50 million people a century ago, was first reported by a national Spanish newspaper, it "didn't originate in Spain .... Even today, experts aren't certain where the outbreak originated," according to an article by NPR's Science Friday. Meanwhile, the West Nile Virus was named after a district in Uganda where it was first isolated in 1937, according to a World Health Organization fact sheet

Fong, the ethic studies professor, said political leaders who label the novel coronavirus "the Chinese coronavirus" ignore past stereotypes and hostility against Asian Americans. "It's dangerous when they don't recognize the problem it creates."

Earlier this month, NPR documented some of the anti-Asian discrimination that has followed the spread of the virus.

The World Health Organization warns against naming new diseases for geographic locations, including countries, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. According to WHO guidelines, the advice is intended, in part, to "avoid causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups."

Earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's director, Robert Redfield, told a House committee that referring to the virus as the "Chinese coronavirus" is inappropriate.

Philippine president orders virus lockdown of capital - Malay Mail

MANILA, March 13 — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced plans Thursday for a sweeping lockdown of the capital's 12 million people, including a halt to domestic travel, in a bid to contain the deadly new coronavirus.

Though the nation has detected a fraction of the cases seen in hotspots such as China and Italy, officials hope to arrest the spread before it takes firm root in Manila's densely packed neighbourhoods.

During a nationally televised address, Duterte also announced a month of school closures, ban on mass gatherings and a prohibition on the entry of foreigners from places where the contagion is spreading.

"It's a lockdown," said the president, a popular leader locally but notorious internationally for his deadly drug crackdown.

"It's just a matter of protecting and defending you from Covid-19. That's about it."

It was not immediately clear when all the measures would take effect but Duterte said the prohibition on domestic sea, air and land traffic in and out of Manila would start Sunday.

The Philippines' tally of cases has risen from 24 to 52 since Monday and four of its five virus-related deaths were reported this week.

Cases globally now stand at more than 125,000 and 4,600 deaths, most of which have been in China.

Duterte's heavy-handed move comes after the World Health Organisation urged countries to take action, saying the outbreak is a "controllable pandemic".

The president himself underwent screening for the virus on Thursday as a precaution after coming into contact with government officials who were potentially exposed to the virus at recent public events.

The 74-year-old leader is in a vulnerable age group for the virus, which poses a greater risk to older people.

'Death and misery'

Critics expressed concern about how Duterte's lockdown would impact the potentially millions of workers who commute into Manila daily.

"This will only bring death and misery to millions of poor and struggling Filipinos who will be prevented from pursuing their livelihood," labour group Migrante International said in a statement.

Duterte also in the address touched on one of the most delicate and divisive features of his presidency — his policy pivot towards long-time foe China.

The president has set aside the two nations' running standoff over Beijing's extensive claims to the disputed South China Sea to court trade and investment from the rising power.

"Maybe there will be a time, if things deteriorate, that I have to call on China to help," Duterte said.

"I hope it would not reach that point, but maybe we will need your help." — AFP

Why T-Mobile Stock Fell Today - Motley Fool

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 08:41 PM PDT

What happened

Shares of T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) declined by 11.2% on Thursday, coinciding with a vicious marketwide sell-off that saw the major U.S. indexes fall nearly 10%.

So what

The outbreak of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, is causing panic to spread throughout the financial markets. More than 127,000 people have been infected with the disease and over 4,700 have died. Markets around the world have plunged in response.

The measures being taken to combat COVID-19 are likely to have severe economic ramifications. Travel bans, business closures, and forced quarantines will all take a toll on the economy -- and concerns are mounting that we're headed for a recession.

A person pointing to a stock chart that rises then falls.

T-Mobile and many other stocks declined sharply on Thursday. Image source: Getty Images.

Now what

If a recession takes hold, T-Mobile should hold up relatively well. People are unlikely to cancel their cellphone service in the middle of a crisis. T-Mobile's plans are often priced considerably lower than its rivals AT&T and Verizon, which should further help it hold on to cost-conscious customers.

T-Mobile is also getting very close to finalizing its merger with Sprint (NYSE:S). The deal is expected to result in substantial operational synergies, as the two wireless competitors reduce redundancies and enjoy increased scale advantages. This, in turn, should allow the combined company to be significantly more profitable than either business could be alone.

As such, the current sell-off could be a good time to pick up some shares of T-Mobile.

Quezon City Mayor not keen on imposing city-wide lockdown amid COVID-19 threat - CNN Philippines

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 08:26 PM PDT

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 13) — Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmote is against the possible imposition of a city-wide lockdown, which will restrict travel of its 3 million residents.

In an interview with CNN Philippines, Belmonte said she will appeal a portion of President Rodrigo Duterte's declaration of a community quarantine. In the resolution issued on Thursday, a city-wide quarantine is "advised" when there are at least two positive coronavirus cases belonging to different barangays in the same city; there are six confirmed coronavirus disease or COVID-19 cases in Quezon City.

She said it is unrealistic to impose a lockdown on the largest city in Metro Manila.

"I think I will probably appeal this to the DILG... I think it's a little bit unreasonable to lockdown our city if only two barangays would exhibit two cases from different households," she said.

The local executive said the city government will craft guidelines on how to lessen the number of people unnecessarily going around the city.

"We are encouraged to stay at home as much as possible, we are encouraged to work from the house if we can. The city government will be crafting guidelines to that effect to lessen the number of people going to city halls because of course that constitutes greatly to the probable spread of the virus. We are working for a four-day work week for many of our employees," she said.

The Interior Department said Metro Manila cities, municipality should consult first with the inter-agency task force and the Health Department before implementing a city- or municipality-wide quarantine.

Over 12 million people living in Metro Manila would not be allowed in and out of the country's economic and political center by land, local air travel and local sea travel from midnight of March 15 until April 14 as the region is placed under community quarantine.

This is part of the recommendations of the Inter-agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases approved by Duterte during their meeting before his address. All their recommendations will be in place for 30 days, but will be evaluated every seven days.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's wife, Sophie Gregoire, has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Following medical advice, she will remain in isolation for the time being. She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild," according to a statement tweeted by Cameron Ahmad, the prime minister's communications director.

Health professionals are set to reach out to people who have been in close contact with Gregoire Trudeau. The prime minister himself is in "good health with no symptoms," Ahmad said.

"As a precautionary measure and following the advice of doctors, he will be in isolation for a planned period of 14 days," the statement added. "Also on the advice of doctors, he will not be tested at this stage since he has no symptoms."

Trudeau will address Canadians on Friday, the statement said.

Gregoire Trudeau thanked people in a personal statement that Ahmad shared on Twitter. She said although she is experiencing "uncomfortable symptoms of the virus, I will be back on my feet soon," and noted that other Canadian families and patients may be facing more serious health concerns.

Gregoire Trudeau had recently returned from a speaking engagement in London and began exhibiting "mild flu-like symptoms including a low fever" late Wednesday.

As of Thursday, Canada has at least 138 confirmed cases, according to government data. The coronavirus outbreak, which has affected at least 125,000 people worldwide, has been declared a global pandemic by WHO

Canada said Trudeau on Thursday held phone meetings with leaders of Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom and participated in a special cabinet committee meeting on the virus outbreak.

Trudeau also spoke with Canada's finance minister on the current economic situation as well as leaders of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Canada Labour Council.

Odion Ighalo: Manchester United forward scores sparkling goal with virtually nobody there to see it - BBC Sport

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 07:42 PM PDT

Odion Ighalo

Odion Ighalo's sensational goal for Manchester United at LASK in the Europa League was worthy of a packed house at the Linzer Stadion.

Juggling the ball from right foot to left, the 30-year-old Nigeria forward then cannoned a left-footed shot in off the crossbar from 18 yards.

But instead of the roar of a crowd, all that was audible was was a thud of boot to ball and the clang of the crossbar before he was joined by his teammates.

A sparkling effort unfortunately witnessed live by a smattering of people and not the wider audience it deserved due to the coronavirus outbreak restricting the attendance to just 500.

United's substitutes even crowded around a screen in their dug out to watch it again. But then would Ighalo have even attempted it at Old Trafford?

Former United midfielder Paul Ince, suggested otherwise on BT Sport, likening it to the sort of potshot seen at training grounds when the pressure is off.

"Maybe he doesn't do it in front of a full house," said Ince. "It reminds me of one of those that you do at training. Maybe I'm doing a disservice to him."

However, fellow studio guest Owen Hargreaves, was a touch more complimentary.

"It is like Tony Yeboah, it's a thing of beauty," he said, referencing the Ghanaian's famous in-off-the-crossbar volley for Leeds in 1995.

"It is one of the best goals he has ever scored."

'No-one would have saved that'

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also effusive in his praise of Ighalo, who was a surprise January addition on loan from China's Shanghai Shenhua.

"Odion has done really well when he's come in and he's enjoying himself," Solskjaer said.

"He will improve and get better, but he has qualities that we saw in him that we needed and we'll still need those qualities for next season so let's see what we do.

"He is very good back to goal, you can play up to him. Great link player, but maybe the best thing about him is his personality, so he's got the whole lot really.

"He had three touches before his fourth, the finish. All them touches were high quality but he had to make them to create the space for himself.

"But the strike is on the half-volley, great timing. No-one would have saved that one so anyone would be proud of that finish."

What fans made of it all

Paul Murphy: Remember when we all laughed when United signed Ighalo?

Michal Koziol: Everyone who said Ighalo wasn't the calibre United need should look at that goal over and over again. The first touch, the control, the power, everything perfect. Such a shame the stadium's empty.

Nicholas Mills: Anything about this Ighalo loan spell reminding anyone of Henrik Larsson.

Stuart Mitchell: That goal deserved to be seen by many more people in the ground. Stunning strike and United would do well to sign him up for next season clear he wants to play for the club.

Altaf Shaikh: Had my reservations about Ighalo, but what a start he has had, top goal, just what United needed.

YouTube Replaces the ‘Trending’ Tab With New ‘Explore’ Tab on Mobile - Search Engine Journal

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 07:32 PM PDT

YouTube is rolling out an update to its mobile app on iOS and Android which replaces one of its most frequently visited sections.

As of today, the 'Trending' tab is being replaced with a more robust 'Explore' tab.

"… with Explore, you not only have access to Trending videos, but also to destination pages for some popular content categories like Gaming, Music, Fashion & Beauty, Learning and more – all from one place."

YouTube Replaces the 'Trending' Tab With New 'Explore' Tab on MobileYouTube Replaces the 'Trending' Tab With New 'Explore' Tab on Mobile

Here's what's different in the new Explore tab:

  • Access to destination pages: Shortcuts to destination pages including Music, Gaming, News, Movies & Shows, Fashion & Beauty, and Learning.
  • More prominent 'On the Rise' sections: "Creator on the Rise" and "Artist on the Rise" will now appear before other trending videos.
  • Trending videos: The old Trending tab will now have its own section in Explore.

This sounds like good news for smaller creators, given that the 'On the Rise' section will now be one of the first things people see.

'On the Rise' aims to highlight new creators and emerging artists, whereas the Trending section primarily highlights established brands and YouTubers with large followings. This change presents an opportunity for smaller creators to get discovered.

If you recall seeing an Explore tab in the YouTube app before today, that's because YouTube has been testing it since 2018. This update is based on feedback and results gathered from the tests.

Should Trump Copy China's Aggressive Coronavirus Strategy? - Newsweek

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 07:26 PM PDT

Coronavirus cases are increasing exponentially in the global West, prompting travel restrictions, emergency financial measures and even national lockdowns. But in China—where the outbreak began last December—health authorities have claimed that the outbreak has peaked and that the number of daily new cases is now falling.

China was criticized for a lackluster response to the initial outbreak, suppressing whistleblowers and allegedly under-reporting the number and severity of cases. But in recent weeks Beijing has overseen an aggressive response, quarantining millions of people, ramping up medical services and expanding testing. How much of the slowdown is due to these measures is unclear, but other nations will be taking note.

The U.S. is still in the early stages, with Americans watching the virus wreak havoc in Asia and increasingly Europe—where Italy has been effectively placed under total lockdown. There are currently 1,321 confirmed cases in the U.S. with 38 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. At least eight people have recovered. The Statista infographic below shows that the virus has spread nationwide.

Statista Map Coronavirus March 12, 2020
This chart shows the number of confirmed cases and deaths from coronavirus in the United States as of March 12 at 6 a.m

President Donald Trump initially dismissed the outbreak as a "hoax," but appears to have recognized its severity as federal and state officials ramp up preparations. But could the U.S. emulate some of the aggressive Chinese strategies if the situation worsens?

Mass quarantines

China quarantined 16 entire cities to stop the outbreak, locking down 46 million people. This included the city of Wuhan where the virus originated, plus surrounding Hubei province. Trump could do something similar but would face huge domestic opposition, with citizens likely to protest loss of freedoms and their lawmakers likely to back them.

Irwin Redlener, the director of Columbia University's National Centre for Disaster Preparedness, told the BBC he thought the likelihood of this is "extremely, extremely small" and such measures would essentially amount to martial law.

But a limited action has already been taken, with the New York city of New Rochelle placed in a one-mile "containment zone" on Tuesday—with the help of the National Guard—after a spate of infections.

Michael Head, senior research fellow at the U.K.'s University of Southampton, told Newsweek that the evidence to date suggests "that quarantining does have an impact on at the very least slowing down the spread of the disease, which then gives you a chance to get on top of it."

A rapid increase in cases threatens to overwhelm finite hospital resources, resulting in lack of care for those in need and a higher number of fatalities. This appears to be part of the problem in Italy, where medical staff are reporting being overwhelmed by cases.

Head also warned there will be "societal consequences" for those under quarantine. Mental health will be undermined by fear and isolation and in China there have been reports of increased rates of domestic violence among home-bound families.

As to whether mass quarantines would be feasible, Head replied: "Watch this space—it's not a clear 'yes' or 'no' answer."

Travel restrictions

China grounded a portion of domestic flights and many international flights in a bid to stop the disease. Trump has already introduced international flight restrictions for China, Iran and now the European Union.

Domestic U.S. carriers are also already cutting the number of flights due to a lack of demand. Mass quarantines would force new travel restrictions on people going in and out of towns, cities or states where outbreaks are focused.

Closing schools and canceling events

Schools and colleges in some parts of China were closed for fear of students spreading coronavirus. In any nation, such a step puts additional burdens on families who will have to find childcare—if indeed the parents are still going to work themselves. Some children rely on school meals and may go hungry if schools are closed, and parents unable to go to work could lose out on earnings.

The U.S. could also follow suit and cancel large events. The NBA has already announced it has suspended the ongoing season and the Coachella music festival has been postponed to October. Other public event organizers may take similar measures.

New hospitals

Chinese authorities began building makeshift hospitals to deal with the surge in coronavirus patients that threatened to overwhelm established medical centers. In Wuhan, two hospitals with 2,600 beds were built in just over a week. Other public spaces were transformed into medical centers to deal with the overflow.

Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Newsweek there is "some capacity" for alternative care sites in the U.S.

"Maybe some of the more milder individuals who may not need full hospitalization that could be repurposed at maybe at nursing homes or other types of facilities," he suggested, or "mobile medical units that the government has that could be deployed as necessary."

"But I think a lot of it is going to be creative use of space in hospitals, trying to convert areas that are not used for patient care to patient care, to places where patient care can occur," he explained.

Chinese hospitals also delayed elective surgeries to divert resources to coronavirus and moved a significant number of services online to keep non-infected people away from medical centers.

Adalja said that the U.S. has "the ability to really use telemedicine resources because those have increasingly been proliferating around the United States. So that's one thing that can easily be done."

Tests were made free and more widely available. One of the major criticism of the U.S. response is the lack of tests and the strict guidelines on using them, resulting in the virus spreading unchecked across the country for weeks. The Trump administration has said more tests are coming, but significant damage has already been done.

Extra medical teams

China called in medical volunteers to work in Wuhan, some of whom ended up becoming infected. Adalja said the U.S. has "many different types of healthcare providers" that can assist in the response, though noted that most of them "have day jobs and those day jobs are going to involve a lot of work dealing with this coronavirus," meaning they can only offer limited hours.

"I think that what they'll do is try and call up people that are part of the Medical Reserve Corps and local communities," Adalja explained.

"But I'm worried that many of those people already have full-time jobs," he continued, noting "you can't just train up somebody to be a doctor or a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner. That takes a long time."

"I think that we're going to have to deal with a lot of doctors that maybe a lot of healthcare providers that are overworked," he warned.

Officials will have to fight to keep medical staff healthy. In every badly affected country, physicians and nurses have been among those infected and killed, further constricting the supply of trained professionals. Some U.S. medical staff have already staged protests demanding protection against the virus in the event of mass outbreaks and condemning the confusion over the national response.

World Health Organization advice for avoiding spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Hygiene advice

  • Clean hands frequently with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Wash hands after coughing or sneezing; when caring for the sick; before; during and after food preparation; before eating; after using the toilet; when hands are visibly dirty; and after handling animals or waste.
  • Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your hands, nose and mouth. Do not spit in public.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or bent elbow when coughing or sneezing. Discard the tissue immediately and clean your hands.

Medical advice

  • If you feel unwell (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) seek medical care early and call local health authorities in advance.
  • Stay up to date on COVID-19 developments issued by health authorities and follow their guidance.

Mask usage

  • Healthy individuals only need to wear a mask if taking care of a sick person.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective when used in combination with frequent hand cleaning.
  • Do not touch the mask while wearing it. Clean hands if you touch the mask.
  • Learn how to properly put on, remove and dispose of masks. Clean hands after disposing of mask.
  • Do not reuse single-use masks.

Duterte to address nation tonight amid COVID-19 pandemic - CNN Philippines

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 06:26 PM PDT

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 12) — Local stocks took another nosedive on Thursday morning, settling below the 6,000 level as the novel coronavirus disease is now characterized as a pandemic.

The World Health Organization made the announcement on Thursday dawn (Manila time) as the disease, officially called COVID-19, gained a foothold in every continent except Antartica. There are now more than 126,000 infected people and over 4,600 deaths worldwide due to COVID-19, according to the Johns Hopkins University's global tracker.

The Department of Health confirmed 16 new cases of the disease on Wednesday. This brings the total number of cases in the country to 49 as of March 11.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index tumbled by 9.71 percent to 5,736.27, diving further into bear territory. This was bigger than the plunge seen on Monday, marking the deepest decline since October 2008 or the era of the Global Financial Crisis.

The bleeding was so bad that the local bourse had to trigger 15-minute trading halt which lasted until 3:08 p.m., just minutes before the closing bell, as shares dipped by 10.33 percent to as low as 5,697.13.

The PSE said this was only the second time in history when the so-called "circuit breaker" was tapped, the first being on October 27, 2008 when the emergency tool was only a month old.

"In theory, the circuit breaker was intended to provide breathing space for traders during critical situations, such as this afternoon. It should ease some selling pressure today but unfortunately, the situation outside the market that contributed to the drop continues to unfold," said Rens Cruz, senior equity analyst at Regina Capital.

"It might take more than a few minutes to completely curb the heavy selling in the market right now," Cruz added, noting that the Philippines continues to report additional COVID-19 cases and there are concerns over a possible lockdown in Metro Manila or key cities hounding the public.

All indices fell for the entire trading session, with mining and oil companies hurt the most with a 12.76 percent drop. Property companies followed with a 10.82 percent crash, as well as banks and financial firms with a 10.12 percent slide.

Other stock markets in the region also slid, but the PSEi's crash is wider compared to its neighbors.

RELATED: US stock futures fall more than 1,000 points after Trump suspends travel between the US and much of Europe

A market analyst said the slide is "not yet over," as uncertainty and fear over the disease continued to spook market players.

"You have fear, you're now in mega fear," BDO chief market strategist Jonathan Ravelas said in an interview, pointing out that investors may have dumped local shares upon seeing a difference in the response of local authorities compared to China, the United States, and Europe in containing the disease.

"They were decisive. Their main priority was containment... They were equipped of what they wanted to do, then they had support for the markets," he added. "It's a model that could be emulated."

Ravelas said strong first-quarter earnings to be reported by companies, as well as sustained government spending on infrastructure, can help lift sentiment, alongside effective efforts to contain the spread of the disease.

He added that investors should stay "nimble," but pointed out that now is a good opportunity to enter the stock market.

'Grey's Anatomy' actress Jasmine Guy is Tackling a New Role in BET's 'Open' - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 06:14 PM PDT

The Vampire Diaries fans know Jasmine Guy as the actress who portrayed Bonnie's grandmother, a powerful Bennett witch who helped save the town of Mystic Falls from certain doom. Others may recognize the actress as the Grey's Anatomy character, Gemma, who is an old friend of Richard Webber and a thorn in Catherine Fox's side.

But before either of these roles, Guy became an accomplished comedic and dramatic actress with roles on the big screen and on television. Her latest project is a BET original production. Here's a breakdown of where Guy began and what the actress is up to now.

Jasmine Guy's big break

Guy is a remarkably talented triple-threat entertainer who is skilled in acting, dancing, and music. She launched her career with guest-starring roles on television, including a multi-episode part on Fame, before landing the role that made her a household name. In 1987, Guy was tapped to co-star in NBC's A Different World.

The sitcom was a spin-off of The Cosby Show, and centered around a group of co-eds matriculating at a fictional Virginia college called Hillman. A Different World shined a light on life at historically Black colleges and universities, or HBCUs, and inspired a generation of young people to shoot for the stars.

Guy quickly became a fan favorite as viewers shipped her character Whitley Gilbert and Kadeem Hardison's alter ego, Dwayne Wayne. A Different World delivered laughs, tears, and a dose of authenticity thanks in part to the Seasons 2-6 showrunner, Debbie Allen. What's more, Guy and her castmates gave TV buffs some of the most memorable scenes in media history.

Beyond 'A Different World'

While on break from shooting A Different World, the accomplished entertainer took roles in television movies, music videos, and films. Most notably, she appeared with her A Different World scene partner, Hardison, in School Daze, and played the part of a mob moll in Harlem Nights with Eddie Murphy. Guy even found the time to release a self-titled solo album in 1990.

After A Different World ended, Guy continued working consistently in television and film, including a long-term gig on Dead Like Me. She also reunited with Hardison in a recurring role on K.C. Undercover, in which he starred as Zendaya's TV dad. Plus, Guy made TV magic in a 15-episode stint as Sheila 'Grams' Bennett on The Vampire Diaries, followed by a stretch on The Quad, between working on other shows.

Most recently, Guy reconnected on screen with Allen on Grey's Anatomy. Allen helmed A Different World and occasionally guest-starred on the show as the therapist of Guy's character. On the show, the ladies struck comedy gold and popularized the therapeutic catch phrase, "Relax. Relate. Release."

Aside from her acting work, Guy has used her influence to bring awareness to important social issues. She has shared post-vote photos to her Instagram account in an effort to encourage others to vote, and she has performed service projects for topics such as sex trafficking in the United States.

Guy's BET original film, 'Open'

With over 75 credits under her belt, Guy continues to entertain. Her latest acting project is the BET original film, Open. In the drama, Essence Atkins and Keith Robinson star as a married couple exploring the concept of open marriage. Guy and Matt Cedeno appear in supporting roles. Open premieres on BET and BET HER Saturday, March 14 at 8 p.m.

Philippines expands travel ban to all countries with local COVID-19 transmission - CNN Philippines

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 05:56 PM PDT

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 12) – Selected hospitals known for their expertise in treating infectious diseases will begin validating the locally developed test kit for coronavirus disease or COVID-19 to make sure it is safe for public use, one of the product developers said Thursday.

Southern Philippines Medical Center in Mindanao, Vicente Sotto Medical Center in Visayas, Philippine General Hospital in Manila as well as The Medical City in Pasig City have agreed to be testing sites for the University of the Philippines National Institutes of Health's field study, Dr. Raul Destura, inventor of the detection kit, said in a briefing Thursday.

Destura said he will also reach out to Baguio General Hospital if it could participate in the clinical trial.

The scientist said the facilities were chosen based on their areas of expertise.

"Itong mga ito, may kanya kanyang eksperto sa infectious disease. Para iyong interpretation ng clinical data malinaw."

The field validation study, which may be completed within two to three weeks, is one of the two pre-conditions set by the Food and Drug Administration for the kit to become commercially available. The first one was for the product to pass the laboratory performance testing. The developers passed the first test so the Food and Drug Administration issued them a certificate of exemption a few days ago.

The facilities need to conduct validation of 500 tests for COVID-19, which may start by Monday next week, Food and Drug Administration chief Rolando Domingo said Wednesday. A total of 1,000 kits will be divided among the site validators, Destura said.

All test results will be validated by a quality control officer and approved by a pathologist. Results will be released though email or they could be delivered to the institution which requested the test.

Initial diagnostic test results will then be sent to the Philippine Genome Center of the University of the Philippines so it could further confirm or refute the presence of COVID-19.

Right now, the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine has to process every test, but the demand for testing does not match its capacity.

The RITM can conduct tests on 300 nasal and throat swabs a day, but the demand is around 600 to 700, according to the Department of Health. A patient will have to undergo tests at least three times. Aside from the confirmatory test, a COVID-19 patient must be tested twice before being discharged from the hospital.

The new kit is six times cheaper at P1,320 per test than the current kit imported by RITM, which costs P8,500 each.

The DOH has said it wants to purchase around 40,000 test kits.

Europe’s Viral Recession - The Wall Street Journal

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 05:38 PM PDT

European leaders are struggling to cope with the health consequences of Covid-19, and now the next struggle is coming into view—the economy. The pandemic is all but certain to tip large parts of Europe into recession, and no leader has a good response.

To some extent the coronavirus downturn will be beyond the control of any European politician. Italy is in the midst of an economically shattering lockdown. The virus has disrupted global supply chains, and President Trump's European travel ban doesn't help.

T-Mobile and Sprint reveal new leadership structure — here’s the email sent to employees - GeekWire

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 05:10 PM PDT

T-Mobile and Sprint are gearing up for life as a combined company and on Thursday revealed a revamped leadership structure for the "New T-Mobile."

The new senior leadership team revealed today in an SEC filing combines T-Mobile and Sprint executives, with some employees continuing in their current roles and others taking over new positions.

T-Mobile, based in Bellevue, Wash., and Sprint, based in Overland Park, Kan., announced plans to merge in April 2018. The $26.5 billion deal passed a significant hurdle this week when California's attorney general announced a settlement with the companies following a legal battle.

The New T-Mobile will be led by current T-Mobile COO and president Mike Sievert, who will take over for John Legere as CEO on May 1.

"To create this future, we need to bring together the BEST of BOTH T-Mobile and Sprint – the best of our people and cultures," Legere and Sievert wrote in a letter to employees, which you can read below. "We also need to think differently about how we operate as a much larger company, without leaving behind the fast-paced entrepreneurial style that got us here."

Braxton Carter, who was previously reported to leave after the merger was complete, will stay on as the company's chief financial officer.

Abdul Saad, previously SVP of technology at T-Mobile, will be promoted to the CTO seat, reporting to 20-year T-Mobile vet Neville Ray, president of technology.

As GeekWire previously reported, David Carey, executive vice president of corporate services at T-Mobile, will depart in April.

Current Sprint execs that will take on new roles with the combined company include Deeanne King, chief human resources officer; John Saw, EVP of advanced and emerging technologies; and Dow Draper, EVP of emerging products.

Read the email to employees below.

NEW T-MOBILE SLT ANNOUNCEMENT

To: All Employees

From: John Legere and Mike Sievert

Subject: A Message from John Legere and Mike Sievert—Announcing New T-Mobile's SLT!

Team,

We've spent the last two years working to close our transaction with Sprint to create the New T-Mobile. Along the way, many of you have been working to keep our business strong and to get integration plans underway so we can hit the ground running once this deal finally closes. Every day, we get one step closer to making New T-Mobile a reality and we can't wait to get started changing the game – AGAIN! We are so excited to see this team supercharge our Un-carrier strategy, build a 5G network unlike anything the world has ever seen, and create jobs and career growth opportunities for so many of our employees.

So, if we sound a little fired up about our future together… it's because we are!

To create this future, we need to bring together the BEST of BOTH T-Mobile and Sprint – the best of our people and cultures. We also need to think differently about how we operate as a much larger company, without leaving behind the fast-paced entrepreneurial style that got us here.

As a company with the revenue profile of a Fortune 40 (by the way, wow!) – we will need to ensure our business is focused on long term value creation. We have a winning strategy today that has delivered incredible results over the last 7 years, but as we think about the New T-Mobile, we have to ensure our organization is set up to operate with distinct lines of businesses and functions in order to help us achieve scale. This will require our leaders to invest even more time and energy on strategy and forward-looking topics to grow and compete in new ways. The New T-Mobile will need to deliver on even bigger cross-functional initiatives while pursuing businesses outside of core smartphone offerings. We will need to be a company with a growth mindset, but still have a cost-conscious culture, and while all of this will be a difficult balance, we are confident that we have chosen the right leadership team to get it done.

To build the New T-Mobile, we have chosen a team of amazing executives – a solid, integrated team with deep industry experience, an unwavering passion for customers and the willingness to battle and win in wireless and beyond! Together, we will need to build a culture that supports our respective missions—taking the good from both T-Mobile and Sprint.

It is with that mindset that today, we are naming the executives who will serve as members of the New T-Mobile Senior Leadership Team (SLT), after the transaction closes and our companies come together. This team will lead the way as we build this future together! These changes will be effective as of the closing of the transaction, also known as "Day Zero" of The New T-Mobile.

First, let's discuss Finance and Technology, who focus on our business from left to right. We're starting here because quite simply, New T-Mobile's aspirations are centered on our ability to deliver on our financials and to build the world's best 5G Network:

Finance:

Braxton Carter will continue to serve as our Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer as a CEO direct report. Braxton joined MetroPCS in 2001, where he also held the CFO role, and joined T-Mobile in 2013, upon closing the MetroPCS merger. The T-Mobile team knows Braxton as the Magenta Cowboy—a financial wizard who has helped us build a company that has translated our customer growth over the last 7 years into strong financial performance. Braxton's leadership will be instrumental in our effort to continue T-Mobile's record of financial discipline and success as New T-Mobile.

Susan Loosmore will serve as our new Executive Vice President, Financial Planning & Analysis, reporting to Braxton. Susan has more than 23 years of wireless industry experience and has been with T-Mobile for over a decade, having served in several finance-related positions, including her most recent role as Senior Vice President of Financial Planning & Analysis. Susan knows the nuts and bolts of the business better than anyone and has helped T-Mobile exceed our financial and operational goals at every step. Please join us in congratulating Susan on her promotion!

Technology:

Neville Ray will continue to serve as our President of Technology, as a CEO direct report. Neville joined T-Mobile 20 years ago, in April 2000, and has been plotting the future of our network ever since! He is the man responsible for building our 4G LTE network from the ground up, going from ZERO POPs of LTE at the beginning of 2013 to 327 million today. Neville and team also delivered America's first, largest and only nationwide 5G network. Neville is a respected industry icon (Thankfully, he's OUR industry icon!). He and his team will lead our network and technology agenda into the 5G era!

Abdul Saad will serve as our Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, reporting into Neville. Abdul joined T-Mobile over 19 years ago and has been the strategic mastermind behind the innovation and growth of our network. Abdul's expanded role as a member of SLT is well-timed as we prepare to embark on our future as the New T-Mobile and continue to lead the industry with nationwide 5G. Please join us in congratulating Abdul on his recent promotion!

John Saw will serve as our new Executive Vice President of Advanced and Emerging Technologies, reporting to Neville. John joined Clearwire in 2003 as the second employee, long before Sprint's acquisition of Clearwire in 2013. As Sprint's network leader, he transformed Sprint's network performance and drove the 5G ecosystem for the critical mid-band 2.5GHz spectrum. John's network expertise and vision will help lead the New T-Mobile into the 5G era and beyond as we determine our future technology product and services roadmap.

Cody Sanford will serve as our Executive Vice President and Chief Information and Product Officer, reporting to Neville. Cody started his career at T-Mobile over 20 years ago holding a variety of leadership roles including roles in retail sales, engineering operations and technology. He helped spearhead the integration for the successful MetroPCS merger. As Chief Product Officer, Cody will lead enterprise-wide coordination of product management and product development, recognizing that this software development happens in multiple groups across the company. Cody and team will continue to lead our IT systems while driving our transformation into a product-focused company that continuously brings customer experience-obsessed products to life.

Second, let's discuss our "Lines of Business" for New T-Mobile. Our operating model will surround three lines of business, who will pursue their respective market opportunities collaboratively with our corporate functional groups:

Consumer Markets:

Jon Freier will continue to serve as Executive Vice President of Consumer Markets, reporting to Mike. Jon has been with us for over 24 years and has served in a number of leadership roles. Most recently as our EVP of Retail Sales, Jon has successfully driven our retail transformation and geographic expansion efforts, to help us deliver on our amazing magenta growth over the last 7 years! He and his team will drive the Consumer Markets business plan, leading consumer sales, distribution, and overall operations, with responsibility for revenue and customer growth, and contribution margin, from these businesses as we execute our "Quarterly Game Plan" (QGP) each quarter.

T-Mobile for Business (TFB) and Wholesale:

Mike Katz will continue to serve as Executive Vice President of T-Mobile for Business leading our TFB and wholesale businesses as a direct report to Mike. With over 20 years under his belt at T-Mobile—from roles in frontline to corporate strategy, marketing and distribution—Mike will continue to help us redefine the future of wireless in businesses and organizations across the country. As we execute our QGP each quarter, Mike and his team will have responsibility for customer and revenue growth, and contribution margin, from these essential businesses. In addition, Mike and team will focus, along with our Marketing and Products groups, on the strategies, products, and solutions required to ensure our ongoing long-term success for TFB and Wholesale.

Emerging Products:

Dow Draper will serve as our new Executive Vice President of Emerging Products, reporting to Mike. Dow joined Sprint in 2009 serving in a number of roles, including Chief Commercial Officer, responsible for commercial strategy, including marketing and sales for the Sprint, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile brands. Dow will lead our group focused on market opportunities beyond the core smartphone business model we all know—leading New T-Mobile's expansion into home broadband video, and certain IoT technologies, while also developing new business models for the company in the digital and advertising arenas, among other spaces.

Third, here are our SLT leaders who will run our big Corporate Functions, who provide essential partnership and leadership alongside all of our business units and who support all of our employees and customers, left to right, across the company:

Corporate Functional Leaders:

Matt Staneff will continue to serve as our Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, reporting to Mike. Matt has been with T-Mobile for over 17 years and has held several leadership positions in his time with the company and has become famous for his strategic thinking with a deep knowledge of the wireless industry. Matt's team is responsible for everything from brand strategy and insights, to digital experiences and marketing, to media, commercial planning, sponsorships, events, offers, promos, core device lifecycle management and supply chain, as well as customer acquisition and management. Matt and his team are on a mission to make T-Mobile the most loved brand in America and we're excited to have him at our marketing helm!

Callie Field will continue to serve as Executive Vice President of Customer Care, and as our de facto Chief Customer Advocate, reporting to Mike. Callie's T-Mobile career started in 2002 as a sales rep at a mall kiosk – and she hasn't looked back since! She's served in several leadership roles – including running large retail organizations – before joining our Care team. It was Callie and her team that devised and introduced Team of Experts, a radical customer care model that has helped to make T-Mobile the most loved brand in wireless. Nobody brings more passion and energy to supporting and loving our customers than Callie and her team of magenta heroes. She will be responsible for bringing the T-Mobile and Sprint Care organizations together with the goal of not only being the best in wireless, but across all industries!

Janice Kapner will serve as our Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer, reporting directly to the CEO. Janice has been with the company since 2014 and been a member of the SLT since she arrived. As the voice of T-Mobile's story, Janice has built a world-class communications function that is famous for speed, agility, creativity and punching way above its weight class. She and her team employ an innovative mix of traditional and cutting edge strategies to proactively and reactively shape and share the Un-carrier narrative every day through: public relations, earned media, social media, employee communications, frontline support, financial communications, regulatory support, and corporate responsibility programs and executive thought leadership work – and tell the world about everything we do! Janice will help us shape and tell the story of the New T-Mobile in fresh and exciting ways!

Deeanne King will serve as our new Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, as a CEO direct report. Deeanne has been with Sprint for over 30 years (!!!), with big leadership roles in multiple functions—and she will play a critical role in retaining and attracting new talent, as well as developing and supporting the differentiated culture of the New T-Mobile. At our company, our culture is what separates us from the rest of the pack—it's what allows us to support our customers in our own, unique way. We're excited to have Deeanne lead the charge in HR for the New T-Mobile!

As Deeanne steps into lead our HR function, we want to especially thank Derek Potter for stepping in and serving as T-Mobile's acting HR lead over the last few months. Derek has been a fantastic addition to our SLT. It was great to see him emerge so successfully as a broader leader! Derek will now continue in his ongoing role as SVP, Total Rewards & Employee Experience. Thank you, Derek!

Peter Ewens will continue to serve as Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development, reporting to the CEO. Peter joined T-Mobile in 2008 and leads the company's corporate strategy, strategic partnerships, new business development, roaming, and M&A activities. Peter and his team were the BIG BRAINS behind the development of the entire business model and plan for New T-Mobile, and they are at the center of every big strategic decision at our company. Peter and his team will play a key role in ensuring our long-term success as we transition into the New T-Mobile and move towards a 5G future.

Dave Miller will continue to serve as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, as a CEO direct report. He will continue to oversee all of our legal and government affairs. Dave just celebrated his 25th anniversary (wow!) at T-Mobile, having started his career at Western Wireless. Dave has been integral to our success as the Un-carrier and has spent the last two years leading the regulatory process for the transaction in order to get this deal across the finish line – all of that on top of his day job! Congratulations and thank you, Dave. We look forward to your continued leadership of New T-Mobile.

Finally, our company will be measured first and foremost on our ability to deliver on our network strategy while simultaneously pursuing an ambitious growth agenda. Quite simply, we have to have the right plans to seek to continue to out-grow our peers over the next few years, and we have to unlock the potential of massive scale by achieving our synergy and transformation targets. Let's look at the leaders who will work closely with the CEO and the rest of the SLT as we focus on these outcomes:

Nestor Cano will serve as our new Executive Vice President of Integration and Transformation, and Strategic Advisor to the CEO. Nestor joined Sprint in 2017 as Chief Operating Officer and has been instrumental in delivering operational excellence, driving further expense reductions, and strengthening systems and processes across the business, all while serving as an indispensable partner in our continued efforts to close the merger. In his new role at T-Mobile, Nestor and his team will work very closely with Mike and the rest of the SLT as we drive our change agenda across the New T-Mobile as we work to exceed our transformation goals.

Sunit Patel will continue to lead our integration planning efforts until we close the transaction. As our pre-merger integration program is brought to a successful conclusion with the completion of the merger, Sunit will be stepping away from T-Mobile. Sunit joined the company in 2018 to lead our integration planning after coming from CenturyLink, where he was CFO. His extensive background in large scale strategic transactions has been very valuable, and he has made incredibly important contributions to our integration plans and our post-closing playbook. So, please join us in saying Thank You and wishing Sunit well!

Jeremy Malasky will serve as Senior Vice President of Corporate Services and Mike's new Chief of Staff, where he will be responsible for our Corporate Services functions and lead the Office of the CEO when Mike takes that position. In the role he will guide our business office to deliver on the priorities of the SLT. First joining T-Mobile's Corporate Strategy & Analytics team four years ago from McKinsey & Co., he has quickly proven to be an astute strategist and well-rounded business leader. In this new capacity, he will work with the rest of the SLT to set our multi-year growth agenda, while ensuring our growth plans are integrated across the various facets of the New T-Mobile.

This is exactly the right team to supercharge our Un-carrier strategy and bring more competition, lower prices, and more innovation to consumers like never before! Our future SLT represents the best of the best — and we are going to be absolutely UNSTOPPABLE!

Best,

John Legere

ORICON NEWS
