T-Mobile closes 80% of corporate retail stores in more aggressive COVID-19 response - FierceWireless Posted: 17 Mar 2020 10:48 PM PDT T-Mobile said it's closed 80% of its company-owned retail stores across the country, taking a more aggressive approach than earlier this week to align with social distancing guidelines as the U.S. works to stem the spread of COVID-19. The move comes just one day after the operator temporarily closed all T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile retail stores, including dealers, located within indoor shopping malls. The new store closures will last until at least March 31. RELATED: Verizon, T-Mobile, Apple close retail doors amid COVID-19, impacting carriers' Q1 T-Mobile has about 5,300 branded retail stores, but Jeff Moore, principal at Wave7 Research, told FierceWireless that the majority of those, about 60% are independent dealer-operated stores as opposed to T-Mobile corporate retail stores. In its latest announcement the operator said closures apply to company-owned stores, so based on the Wave7 percentages, if 40% are company owned, T-Mobile seems to be closing roughly 1,700 T-Mobile retail stores. Of T-Mobile's 9,400 Metro by T-Mobile stores as of November, the vast majority are dealers, with fewer than 200 corporate-owned stores, according to Moore. T-Mobile retail stores located inside malls make up about less than 10% of its locations, he added. Stores that remain open will do so on reduced hours, operating from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in most locations, according to T-Mobile, which noted stores not closed are located across the country and meant to be within a 30-minute drive for most customers in each market. T-Mobile said it is not requiring any employees to work in retail stores for the next two weeks and made its decision on store count based on employee and customer needs. T-Mobile also noted that it's implementing an approach for hourly retail employees to maintain their target income this month during the initial closures. T-Mobile President and COO Mike Sievert in an email to employees said, "These aren't simple decisions, but they are the right ones. We've said it before – the service we provide to keep our customers connected is essential, particularly right now. This is not a time to focus on tackling the competition. This is our time to focus on our community and do our part to stop COVID-19 from spreading." T-Mobile's customer care centers, which aren't open to the general public, will remain open, but at reduced staffing levels and with increased distance between workstations. Care team employees will also continue to get paid if they've experienced symptoms, been exposed to anyone with coronavirus, or are at high risk. RELATED: Dish lets T-Mobile tap its 600 MHz spectrum in response to COVID-19 Wells Fargo analysts on Monday said that carrier store closures, and Apple's decision to close all retail stores outside of greater China, could impact subscriber growth in Q1 and likely Q2, estimating that the majority of gross adds happen through retail channels. Cliff Maldonado, principal at BayStreet Research, said historically the firm has seen approximately 10% of carrier activations come from carriers' online stores, meaning the vast majority come from in-store purchases. "We believe carriers prefer to have consumers come to their retail stores vs selling online so they can provide a better customer service experience and the opportunity to sell accessories, etc.," Maldonado said in comments to FierceWireless. While acknowledging at this point the ultimate impact would still be a guessing game, he said BayStreet thinks "it certainly seems reasonable that the second half of March sales could be down 75-80% compared to the second half of March last year." It will also be interesting to see how other carriers respond to stores closing and ultimately how much demand will wind up as delayed versus lost, Maldonado noted. Verizon said over the weekend also said it would close a number of retail stores across the country temporarily to expand its work-from-home policy and reduce hours. The carrier hasn't yet provided details about the number of stores, duration of closures, or locations. RELATED: How will a mass shift to tele-learning affect wireless networks? Nevada governor shutters gambling, dining to halt virus - KSAT San Antonio Posted: 17 Mar 2020 09:55 PM PDT LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Gambling will grind to a halt by Wednesday in casino-mecca Las Vegas, a city known for glitzy and sometimes reckless fun, as the governor of Nevada issued a sweeping statewide order aimed to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. Democrat Steve Sisolak ordered a monthlong freeze on gambling, shutting down everything from the famous casino resorts to slot machines found in convenience stores, cutting off an industry that fuels the state's tourism and hospitality-powered economy. Sisolak's broad directive also includes the monthlong closure of non-essential businesses like bars, movie theaters and gyms at noon Wednesday. Restaurants must to shutter their dining rooms and only offer takeout or delivery. "This is effecting the lives of our citizens. People are dying. Every day that is delayed here, I'm losing a dozen people on the back end that are going to die as a result of this," Sisolak said at a news conference Tuesday night. Sisolak's order follows similar moves by more than 10 other governors as states scramble to mitigate the risk of exposure to COVID-19. Nevada's governor gave thousands of businesses in the tourism mecca less than a day to prepare. Though a number of casinos started to close their doors this week, the governor's sweeping order shutters Nevada's main industry, anchored by glimmering casinos lining the Las Vegas Strip. The closures are part of federal guidance recommending social distancing. President Donald Trump has urged Americans to follow sweeping guidelines for the next few weeks, including for older residents to stay home and for all people to avoid gatherings of more than 10 as well as restaurants and bars. Sisolak's unprecedented order comes after many casinos in Las Vegas moved to shut their doors entirely and the mayor of Las Vegas said she hoped bars and restaurants would be able to stay open. "My hope is that private industry rises to the top, that they're allowed to stay open and take care of these families that are paycheck to paycheck," Mayor Carolyn Goodman told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The mayor of Reno had issued an order similar to Sisolak a day earlier, telling many of those non-essential businesses to close in that city starting Friday at 5 p.m. Mayor Hillary Schieve initially included casinos but rescinded that, allowing gambling operations to continue. The last time casinos closed in Las Vegas was for John F. Kennedy's funeral on Nov. 25, 1963. Michael Green, a history professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said in an email to The Associated Press Tuesday night that to his knowledge, it was the first time all Nevada casinos have been ordered closed statewide. He previously said this week's intentional casino closures may be only the fourth since gambling was legalized in Las Vegas in 1931. "The state occasionally revoked a license and ordered one closed, but nothing like this," he wrote. Nevada has reported more than 50 cases of the virus so far, including one death. For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. In Las Vegas, MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts announced earlier in the week they planned to close their properties. Tuesday morning, three more casino resorts joined in. The MGM casino closures of 13 properties included the Bellagio and its famous fountain show in front, which often draws a crowd to watch the fountains shooting as high 460 feet (140 meters) into the air, choreographed to lights and music. The Hoover Dam, near the Arizona border and another Nevada tourist attraction, is temporarily closing to visitors "because of the nature of the structure and an inability to implement social distancing standards recommended by the" CDC, according to a statement. With businesses closing and tourism expected to drop off, the state is forecasting a financial hit, but how big is unknown. In Nevada, gambling taxes are second only to sales taxes as a percentage of the state's annual budget. The leisure and hospitality industry directly employs one of every four workers in the state and has an economic output of about $68 billion in Nevada, according to the Nevada Resort Association. The state's biennial Legislature isn't scheduled to meet again until 2021, and legislative leaders are not yet planning to go into a special session to address Nevada's budget. Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, both Democrats, said in a joint statement provided to the Associated Press on Tuesday that they're evaluating all options and they're working closely with the governor. But "at this time, we have no plans to go into a special session," they said. State officials have not yet released any numbers of how many people have filed claims for unemployment benefits over the past few days. Sisolak said over the weekend that the state was in "relatively good shape" to pay unemployment claims but it cannot last forever and the state was working to get some additional assistance from the federal government. Posted: 17 Mar 2020 09:25 PM PDT AndreyPopov | Getty Images Some good news – in the form of money – may be coming to Americans soon. On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that the Trump administration plans to move "immediately" to send money to Americans as the coronavirus cripples the economy. "Americans need cash now," Mnuchin said, indicating checks could come in the next two weeks. The announcement follows much discussion over how the government could act to help shore up American workers' bank balances now, with so many businesses temporarily closed or operating at reduced capacities. A thousand dollars for everyoneSen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said this week that he wants the government to send every adult $1,000. Details on how big the checks the Trump administration hopes to deploy have not been disclosed. Of course, any plans would need a green light from Congress. "The basic idea of getting money into the economy very quickly is a good idea," said Leonard Burman, institute fellow at the Urban Institute, a non-partisan think tank, and co-founder of the Tax Policy Center. It is also an improvement over potential payroll tax cuts, another idea that has been touted by the Trump administration and others in recent weeks. "The ideal thing would be to target the payments [at] the people who are most vulnerable, the people who lose their jobs who are working in industries that are severely affected by the coronavirus," Burman said. "It's hard to set up something to do that right away." Whether and how the extra income is taxed will also depend on the terms of the program. Burman said he thinks making that extra income subject to income taxes is a smart move. That way, he said, it would put a greater burden on high earners to pay more of it back. It would also increase state income tax bases that will be hurt in a recession. More from Invest in You: For individuals, the big question is: How can I best use this money wisely? The answer depends on your personal situation. "The majority of people should probably keep it in their checking account or savings account temporarily," said financial advisor Winnie Sun, founder of Sun Group Wealth Partners in Irvine, California. One exception to that is if you have high-interest credit card, or other, debt. In that case, you want to pay down those balances, Sun said. Should you invest or spend? If you're near retirement, you definitely want to keep the extra cash on hand. But if you're in your 20s or 30s, you may want to invest the money toward your retirement by putting it in a Roth individual retirement account, Sun suggested. "If you went and bought XYZ mutual fund or put it into your IRA, I'm sure that in 20 years that would turn out to be a great thing," said certified financial planner Jude Boudreaux, senior financial planner at The Planning Center in New Orleans. One thing to remember about a universal plan to pay all Americans is that it is not based on financial need. "It's going to be too much for some of them and not enough for others," Burman said. If you don't need the money, you may want to consider donating to a charity that's directly involved in relief efforts or to your local food bank, Boudreaux suggested. It's the difference between just being constantly in a fear and reactive state to the ability to shift and start to move forward again. Jude Boudreaux senior financial planner at The Planning Center "If you wanted to really make a difference in a bunch of families' lives right now, and you absolutely didn't need those dollars, I would really consider passing that along to an organization that does a lot of good for a lot of people," Boudreaux said. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Boudreaux saw firsthand how payments from organizations like the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross helped prop up the local economy. "It was super-beneficial to be able to have that just to weather the immediate storm," said Boudreaux, whose own family received about $2,000 in support. Having that check in hand can allow people to start asking themselves what their next move will be and where they can find work now, he said. "It's the difference between just being constantly in a fear and reactive state to the ability to shift and start to move forward again," Boudreaux said. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is encouraging Americans who can to file their taxes on or before April 15 to do so so that they don't lose out on their tax refunds. But he says that, if Americans owe the IRS money, they can defer up to $1 million for individuals and $10 million for corporations without interest and penalties for 90 days. Trump and Fox News Try to Fight a Virus With Racism - The Intercept Posted: 17 Mar 2020 08:55 PM PDT In case there was any doubt that President Donald Trump is inciting racism by blaming China for the global coronavirus pandemic, and referring to the pathogen as "the Chinese virus," one of his own aides made a racist joke to a Chinese-American reporter at the White House on Tuesday. "This morning a White House official referred to Coronavirus as the 'Kung-Flu' to my face," the CBS News correspondent Weijia Jiang reported on Twitter. "Makes me wonder what they're calling it behind my back," added Jiang, who was born in China but raised in West Virginia. During a subsequent news conference, Trump defended his repeated use of the phrase "Chinese virus," calling it a justified response to the promotion of a conspiracy theory, by Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, that the virus might have been introduced to China by an American soldier during the Military World Games in Wuhan, China, in October.
Asked if labelling the virus that way fuels the racist backlash against Asians already playing out, Trump denied that it did. As he often does, the president absorbed this nativist talking point from his favorite television channel, Fox News. Last week, Tucker Carlson opened his show with a monologue seething with resentment at the idea that it was racist for him to call the pathogen "the Chinese Coronavirus."
The opportunity to both blame China for the crisis and mock liberals for being offended at the racist overtones has led Fox to fill the airwaves with such language. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used the term "Wuhan virus" in a recent appearance on "Fox and Friends," the morning show Trump consumes religiously. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the former presidential candidate, advised the White House and Fox News that a deadly infectious disease cannot be fought with bigotry.
Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat from California, and Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat from Illinois, also condemned Trump for stoking racism.
Fox also offered a platform, last month, to Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, who attacked Chinese officials struggling to contain the outbreak by floating the conspiracy theory that China might have created the virus as a biological weapon. Last week, the spokesman for China's foreign ministry responded by urging his Twitter followers to visit a fringe Canadian website which speculated the virus might have been created at an American biological weapons lab. Amid the escalating tensions between China and the United States, China's foreign ministry also withdrew the press credentials of American correspondents who report for The Washington Post, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Anjorin close to Chelsea contract renewal after making his Premier League debut - Goal.com Posted: 17 Mar 2020 08:50 PM PDT Chelsea have made progress over contract talks with Tino Anjorin but still need to tie up several small details with their academy star in the coming weeks. The protracted discussions with the 18-year-old have proven difficult so far, with the Blues looking to convince the youngster that he can realistically become a first-team player at his boyhood club. Chelsea are looking to tie Anjorin down until 2025 with his current deal expiring in just under a year. Their cause has been aided by Frank Lampard promoting Anjorin to his squad in recent weeks, amid an injury crisis which ultimately brought about his Premier League debut. The midfielder is understood to be delighted at making the breakthrough and is targetting more first-team appearances. "I want to be scoring, I want to be creating," Anjorin said in an interview with the Independent after his appearance in the 4-0 win over Everton. "In five years time, I want to be a leader in the team, helping the younger academy kids to come through, where they can look up to me too and thrive as well." Anjorin is currently in self-isolation like the rest of Chelsea's squad, who are all training at their homes. Reminders of their responsibilities have been sent out amid the coronavirus outbreak after Mason Mount was pictured playing football outside despite being told to remain at home. Chelsea are currently scheduled to end their period of self-isolation at the end of the week but players are likely to continue training from their homes to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Meanwhile, the Blues are hoping to renew Tammy Abraham's contract and are continuing to push through on talks with other players amid the stoppage in the football season. Abraham has asked to be on equal terms to Callum Hudson-Odoi which would see him earn up to £180,000-a-week which includes bonuses. Lampard's influence on introducing homegrown and academy stars into his first-team squad have led to a host of contract renewals for the next generation of talents coming through their training base at Cobham. Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Billy Gilmour, Ian Maatsen, Armando Broja and Jamie Cumming are among recently promoted first-team stars to have renewed their contracts. But Tariq Lamptey and Clinton Mola, the latter of whom was highly regarded despite having not made his debut, opted to leave the club for Brighton and Stuttgart respectively. Chelsea are also interested in a host of players ahead of the summer transfer window with the likes of Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, RB Leipzig's Timo Werner and Lyon's Moussa Dembele on their list. In midfield, there's interest in Lille's Boubakary Soumaré and Birmingham City's Jude Bellingham. There's also focus on recruiting a left-back - with Leicester City's Ben Chilwell and Porto's Alex Telles topping the list - and Getafe's on-loan Barcelona player Marc Cucurella ranking lower down. Ajax's Andre Onana is amongst the goalkeeping targets to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga should Lampard push to see the club-record signing leave Stamford Bridge. Although Chelsea are pushing ahead with contract renewal talks at the moment, efforts to sign players from external clubs is expected to slow temporarily, as the coronavirus situation plays out. Chelsea have already announced the incoming signing of Ajax's Hakim Ziyech for £37m (€40m/$43m), with that deal completed in January. Trump Now Claims He Always Knew the Coronavirus Would Be a Pandemic - The New York Times Posted: 17 Mar 2020 07:55 PM PDT WASHINGTON — For weeks, President Trump has minimized the coronavirus, mocked concern about it and treated the risk from it cavalierly. On Tuesday he took to the White House lectern and made a remarkable assertion: He knew it was a pandemic all along. "This is a pandemic," Mr. Trump told reporters. "I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic." This is what Mr. Trump has actually said over the past two months: On Jan. 22, asked by a CNBC reporter whether there were "worries about a pandemic," the president replied: "No, not at all. We have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It's going to be just fine." On Feb. 26, at a White House news conference, commenting on the country's first reported cases: "We're going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time. So we've had very good luck." On Feb. 27, at a White House meeting: "It's going to disappear. One day — it's like a miracle — it will disappear." On March 7, standing next to President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil at Mar-a-Lago, his club in Palm Beach, Fla., when asked if he was concerned that the virus was spreading closer to Washington: "No, I'm not concerned at all. No, I'm not. No, we've done a great job." (At least three members of the Brazilian delegation and one Trump donor at Mar-a-Lago that weekend later tested positive for the virus.) On March 16, in the White House briefing room, warning that the outbreak would "wash" away this summer: "So it could be right in that period of time where it, I say, wash — it washes through. Other people don't like that term. But where it washes through." That comment on Monday was part of Mr. Trump's inching toward a more urgent tone in recent days. But his assertion on Tuesday that he had long seen the pandemic coming was the most abrupt pivot yet from the voluminous number of claims and caustic remarks he has made about the disease. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump spent much of a lengthy news conference praising his administration's response to the pandemic, saying the only mistake his administration made had been a mismanagement of relationships with the news media. When asked why he had suddenly adopted a somber and realistic tone about the virus on Tuesday, the president denied that he had changed his mind at all. "No, I've always viewed it as very serious," Mr. Trump said. "There was no difference yesterday from days before. I feel the tone is similar, but some people said it wasn't." Besides denying the seriousness of the coronavirus over the past two months, he had also displayed an acerbic tone toward people who took it more seriously. During a campaign rally in South Carolina on Feb. 28, Mr. Trump accused Democrats and the news media of hysteria and unfairly criticizing his administration by engaging in what he said was a political "hoax." Some of his critics have stretched his comment to suggest that he was calling the virus itself a hoax, but his supporters have argued that he was referring to the Democratic criticism, not the virus itself. And until recently, he and several of his advisers had privately mocked his health and human services secretary, Alex M. Azar II, as alarmist. Another theme has been the president's offering inaccurate information. At a campaign rally on Feb. 10, Mr. Trump suggested that the virus would be gone by April, a claim he has frequently repeated, even though his advisers had warned him that much about the virus was still not known. As his administration came under intense criticism for a lack of urgency in issuing guidance to Americans or expediting tests for the virus, Mr. Trump continued misrepresenting what was available. "Anybody right now and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test," the president said on March 6 during a tour of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. "They're there. They have the tests and the tests are beautiful." During that visit, Mr. Trump praised his own "natural ability" to grasp scientific theories, and then he likened the quality of the test to a White House recounting of a phone call. "The transcription was perfect, right?" he asked reporters. "This was not as perfect as that, but pretty good." While his administration struggled to form a uniform answer about testing, Mr. Trump also made misleading claims about whether there would be a vaccine for the virus. On Feb. 29, the president said a vaccine would be available "very quickly" and "very rapidly," as he praised his administration's actions as "the most aggressive taken by any country." His statement about how long it would take for a vaccine to be publicly available was corrected by Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, a member of the coronavirus task force, in front of reporters. This week, Mr. Trump announced that a vaccine candidate was entering a clinical trial — only the first phase in a lengthy process to find a preventive measure. Juventus midfielder Matuidi tests positive for coronavirus - Goal.com Posted: 17 Mar 2020 07:50 PM PDT Juventus have confirmed that midfielder Blaise Matuidi has tested positive for coronavirus. The France international is the second player from the club to contract the illness, after it was announced on Wednesday that defender Daniele Rugani had been infected. Italy international Rugani was confirmed as the first professional player in Serie A to contract Covid-19. Matuidi, a regular for the Serie A side this season, has been in voluntary isolation since Wednesday, and is following a similar procedure to his team-mate. Italy has been in lockdown in a bid to prevent further outbreak of the coronavirus, which has already affected several Serie A players. The government has imposed strict lockdown measures, with public events and gatherings banned and all shops apart from food stores and pharmacies closed. Football teams have been strictly following procedures set out by the government, but containment measures can only work so well as many continue to contract the virus. All Serie A action has been suspended until at least April 3, with UEFA announcing on Tuesday that other competitions including the Champions League, Europa League and Euro 2020 will be postponed. Euro 2020 has been delayed until 2021, while the various domestic and European competitions are expected to finish this summer if conditions improve. Efforts are now being made to ensure the current campaign is not declared null and void. Juventus duo Matuidi and Rugani are just two of a number of confirmed cases in the Italian top flight, with several Fiorentina and Sampdoria players diagnosed with the illness. Rugani has since revealed that he has improved in his recovery from Covid-19, but there still remains huge concerns over the pandemic, which has affected thousands of people worldwide. Other top-flight leagues have also been hugely affected, with the Premier League postponed until at least April 4 after it was announced that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had contracted the virus. Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi was also confirmed to have tested positive. In Spain, Real Madrid players have been forced to quarantine themselves at home after it was revealed that a basketball player at the club had been infected. Now, the star's new Instagram bio reflects a similar sentiment, reading "STAY IN!!!! Don't go out. Let's get thru this together" in regard to the recent coronavirus outbreak. Hudgens, 31, changed her bio after posting an Instagram story on March 16 in which she spoke about the COVID-19 virus. Hudgens said, "I'm sorry, but like, it's a virus, I get it, like, I respect it, but at the same time I'm like, even if everybody gets it, like yeah, people are going to die, which is terrible but like, inevitable?" Advertisement Her remarks stirred outrage among some of her 38.4 million Instagram followers, who called her insensitive and accused the star of not taking the deadly virus and the pandemic seriously. Some others, meanwhile, agreed with her. Amid the controversy, Hudgens posted another Instagram story Tuesday stating that her comments on the virus were taken out of context and asserting that she was quarantined in her house. Hudgens concluded the story by saying "I don't take this situation lightly by any means. I am home, so stay inside y'all." Why is Social Distancing So Important? This Viral ‘Scrubs’ Clip Will Explain - NBC 7 San Diego Posted: 17 Mar 2020 06:22 PM PDT Here's another reminder of why social distancing is so important amid the coronavirus outbreak. A clip from a 2006 episode of the sitcom "Scrubs" went viral this weekend, and it explains how a simple sneeze can potentially lead to illness. The scene is from the opening of the episode "My Cabbage," and features actor Ken Jenkins (as Dr. Kelso) explaining that the number one cause of death in a hospital is "infection." Jump to a quick cut of a boy sneezing into his hands and his mother cleaning his nose with a tissue. Her hand turns green, showing the way the bacteria is spreading, and she shakes a doctor's hand. Now the doctor's hand is green, and he bumps into a nurse. Together, they help pick up some papers the doctor has dropped, and now the nurse's hand is green. She taps a patient on the shoulder and now the patient's arm is green. "And just like that, you have a patient in trouble," said Kelso. Several people began sharing the clip on Twitter. Posted: 17 Mar 2020 05:55 PM PDT Prime Minister Scott Morrison has banned Australians from leaving the country, declaring that returning Australians are the greatest risk of spreading the deadly coronavirus. "We are upgrading the travel ban on Australians to level 4 for the entire world," he said. "That is the first time that has ever happened in Australia's history. The travel advice to every Australian is do not travel abroad. Do not go overseas … that is very clear that instruction." Mr Morrison warned families to cancel all overseas holidays saying that a failure to comply would put Australians at risk. "The biggest risk we have had and the biggest incidents of cases we have had, which Dr Murphy can go into, has been from Australians returning from overseas," he said. "From many countries that you wouldn't have expected that to be a source and so it is very important that Australians do not travel abroad at this time. "That is an indefinite ban but, as you are seeing from other countries around the world, they are putting similar restrictions on entry, just as Australia has on others coming into Australia and you would expect that to be in place now and that is the stage we have reached." GitHub’s new mobile app is now available on iOS and Android - The Verge Posted: 17 Mar 2020 05:48 PM PDT Microsoft-owned GitHub released its new mobile app today as a free download for iOS and Android. The app for the popular code repository service is primarily designed to help developers manage projects while away from their PC, letting them organize tasks, give feedback on issues, respond to comments, and review and merge pull requests. GitHub notifications show up in an inbox that looks like many email inboxes, and you can swipe tasks to either save or mark them as complete: You can also react to comments with emoji, which could be handy to keep a project moving if someone is relying on your feedback: The app also lets you view code, as shown in the below screenshot from the app's App Store page, but you can't actually edit any code within the app: The app first launched in beta on iOS in November and on Android in January. Microsoft announced it would acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in June 2018, and completed the acquisition in October 2018. Posted: 17 Mar 2020 05:22 PM PDT A 48-year-old woman from a small town in Ohio is recovering in quarantine after a scary diagnosis of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. She's only the second known victim in Summit County. After logging on to Facebook over the weekend and seeing people question how "real" the pandemic is, Amy Driscoll had enough. She finally decided to tell her community just how "real" it can be by sharing her experience with the disease. "For all the non believers and those who are not taking this seriously, if you need [to] KNOW someone who has been diagnosed with the COVID-19, well if you are reading this you know me," Amy Driscoll began her Facebook post, which has gone viral. Driscoll told BuzzFeed News she hopes her experience serves as a sobering wake-up call for people who don't think the virus can affect them. She said her symptoms dramatically escalated and sent her to the hospital in the middle of the night last week. "It was so surreal," she said. "I was really sick and I knew something was wrong." Driscoll, née Brock, said she felt completely "fine" on Wednesday as she headed in to work. Within hours, she was lethargic, ran a fever, and had difficulty breathing. In her Facebook post, she wrote that she had woken up in the middle of the night to her heart racing; her "chest felt tight" when she coughed, she wrote. She recounted similar symptoms to BuzzFeed News and added that she had even joked with her colleague at work that she had been affected by the pandemic earlier in the day. "She laughed and said, 'Oh, it's probably COVID-19,' and I thought, 'That's funny.' We were joking, but in retrospect it was not a funny joke," Driscoll said. After consulting with her cousin who's a nurse, Driscoll made the rapid decision to leave her family at home and drive herself to the emergency room at 4:30 a.m. Thursday. She was met with medical personnel, who had all of their protective gear on and immediately tested her and admitted her to a quarantine room. She would spend the next few days there in complete isolation. "Everyone that comes in is completely gowned — head-to-toe covered — that was really weird," said Driscoll. "I was very isolated. ... You're just trying to go through everything on your own." According to Driscoll, she received pain medication for her headache and antibiotics in case her infection turned out to be bacterial. She didn't receive her official positive diagnosis of COVID-19 until close to midnight on Friday. Fortunately, by then, she said she had already started to feel better. "The next day [on Saturday] the doctors came in and said, 'We're going to send you home. But don't stop anywhere, go straight home. Be quarantined until we tell you when you're not,'" she recounted. Driscoll said she was just happy to be in recovery and back with her family — until she logged on to Facebook. She saw many of her Facebook friends posting about not believing in the severity of the pandemic and not understanding why strict restrictions were being imposed on them. "I saw a lot of postings of how people couldn't believe we were going through all these restrictions. People were like, 'Let's get together and have a corona party,'" she said. "I was trying to ignore it, but then a friend from high school had posted, 'I don't know anyone with COVID-19. Is it real? I can't believe we're going through all of this.'" The post struck a nerve for Driscoll. "I am the face of this infection. It is brutal and I'm a healthy 48 year old with no underlying conditions," she wrote in her viral post. "I'm not 100% better but I'm home resting. Please take this seriously. People you love, their lives may depend on it." Driscoll told BuzzFeed News she's still "weak" with limited abilities to move around her house, but she is "healing." After her Facebook post went viral, she was also uplifted by all the support she's received from her local community. "Quarantine is not fun, but I would much rather be in quarantine and know I'm not exposing anyone else to this — and I'll take that," she added. Posted: 17 Mar 2020 05:20 PM PDT Staying on at Manchester United would "be best" for Paul Pogba, says Dimitar Berbatov, but it remains to be seen whether the World Cup winner can work in tandem with Bruno Fernandes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been hoping to experiment with that partnership before the 2019-20 campaign came to a close. He has been denied the services of Pogba through injury for much of the season, with a France international restricted to just eight appearances. That enforced absence contributed towards United bringing in Fernandes during the winter transfer window, with the Portugal international making an immediate impact at Old Trafford. Some have suggested that there is no longer a role for Pogba, as speculation regarding his future and a possible move elsewhere rages on. Berbatov, though, would like to see the Red Devils retain the services of a proven performer and get him firing alongside a new fan favourite. The former United striker told Betfair: "I don't know if Fernandes and Pogba can play together "Bruno Fernandes' ball into Odion Ighalo for the first United goal against LASK was the perfect assist. What a pass. Oh my god. And what a finish from Ighalo. It was a world class goal, I was so happy for both players and jumping out my seat when it hit the net. "Fernandes has quickly become an influential player for United. I'm pleased and impressed by how well integrated into the team he's become in a short space of time. "His team-mates are looking for him with the ball because they know he can create magic. He looks happy to be playing for United. I really hope he continues in this form. "As a fan of Paul Pogba, I want him to stay at United, I think it would be best for him, but I am curious to see how he will link up with Fernandes. "They're similar players, both intelligent enough to think three steps ahead when they're on the ball. "Sometimes footballers are too similar to play together. But I hope that's not the case here because, with Fernandes and Pogba in the same midfield, United could be a very imaginative team that would surprise opponents next season or even sooner." The Red Devils had seen Pogba return to training prior to the shut down in competitive action during the coronavirus outbreak, but it could be that the 27-year-old is up to full speed by the time the decision is taken to bring top-level sport back onto the global agenda.
