NZ to close its borders to anyone not a citizen or permanent resident, PM confirms - RNZ

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 11:25 PM PDT

The prime minister has confirmed that the New Zealand border will be closed to anyone who is not a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident from 11.59pm tonight.

Watch the PM's media conference here:

Children and partners of New Zealand citizens and permanent residents will be allowed to enter.

People from the Pacific will be included in the border closure, as will temporary workers or temporary visa holders such as students.

If travellers are boarding a flight, transiting on their way to New Zealand, or on an aircraft before midnight, they will be able to land and enter the country when they arrive.

"I recognise how extraordinary this is," said Ardern, but the measure had to be taken to protect New Zealand from Covid-19

"In no time in New Zealand's history has a power like this been used."

The ban applies to people not product, and those staffing freight ships and planes are not included.

Those who have travelled here from other countries recently are still required to self-isolate, and those who have been here longer are being encouraged to look at how they can get home.

"I'm not willing to take risks here," Ardern said.

She said the decision was made between 4pm and 5pm this evening. Only Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was told of these changes beforehand.

Those who have already boarded or are enroute will be able to enter New Zealand.

"I have simply removed the risk. I'm not willing to tolerate risk at our border, that is where predominantly of our cases are coming from," said Ardern.

She added that while "we will continue to have cases in New Zealand as we continue to test those with symptoms who have come home, we must slow down the transmission in New Zealand".

Earlier, there were travel bans on anyone arriving from China and Iran, and all others - except those from the Pacific - had to self-isolate for 14 days.

Earlier this afternoon, the government announced a ban on indoor gatherings of more than 100 people.

Ardern has already given one update on the government response to the Covid-19 coronavirus today. Speaking in Rotorua, she told New Zealanders they must prepare for the full effects of the Covid-19 coronavirus, but must not panic, especially over rumours and misinformation.

  • If you have symptoms of the coronavirus, call the NZ Covid-19 Healthline on 0800 358 5453 (+64 9 358 5453 for international SIMs)

The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand increased by eight to 28 today.

Viral video shows mom crying over sold out diapers in Walmart - Insider - INSIDER

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 11:22 PM PDT

  • Mom of four Lauren Whitney went viral on TikTok for her recent video in which she broke down crying after discovering that Walmart had sold out of diapers in her daughter's size.
  • In the clip, Whitney posed a question to those "panic-buying" items in bulk: "How am I supposed to diaper my child if I can't afford to buy 20 at a time like you can?"
  • In just a few days, the video has been viewed over 5.2 million times and received thousands of comments from people experiencing similar shortages.
  • While Whitney has struggled to process the new normal of viral fame, she hopes her video will help people understand the impact that bulk-shopping has on low-income families.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

As the novel coronavirus continues to spread, people are bulk-buying and stock-piling essentials like food, toilet paper, and baby formula.

Over the weekend, mother of four Lauren Whitney posted a TikTok video revealing the devastating impact of panic-buying.

Whitney told Insider that she'd made a trip to Walmart to buy one box of diapers for her youngest daughter, just enough to last them until Whitney's next payday. However, she found only empty shelves — and all of the diapers in her daughter's size were sold out.

Discouraged and upset, the Utah mom filmed her reaction.

"To all you crazy people buying out all the diapers, how am I supposed to –" she said before breaking down in tears. "How am I supposed to diaper my child if I can't afford to buy 20 at a time like you can?"

Whitney told Insider that she intended to leave the video her drafts folder, but thanks to the "tears skewing [her] vision," she accidentally posted it online. An hour later, she returned to the app to find that her post had gone viral.

Ultimately, Whitney decided to leave the video up in hopes of showing viewers the real impact of mass panic.

To date, the clip has been viewed 5.2 million times

"I went to Walmart today and there wasn't ANY formula, I felt so bad for those who REALLY need it," one commenter wrote.

"That behavior is NOT COMMUNITY," another said. "No compassion. So sorry."

"The virus won't kill us, it's the greed. I'm so sorry mama," one comment (that has received over 100,000 likes) read.

The comments section was also flooded with sympathy and offers to help Whitney and her family.

After the influx of supportive comments, Whitney posted a follow-up TikTok video to thank viewers.

In the clip, she explained that while she and her family "aren't the richest" of people, they would be able to manage financially.

"I just wanted to post that video to bring awareness to the fact that people that are, you know, going out and panic-buying are causing problems for those of us that can't afford to go and do that," she said. Whitney added that the video followed a "rough week" and emotions were already running high.

"I wear my heart on my sleeve a lot," she explained.

Being a viral sensation has been an adjustment.

In another follow-up Tik-Tok video, Whitney talked about what it was like to go viral.

"I don't know how to handle going viral. I don't know how to feel about it. I'm so grateful for all of the followers, all of the comments, all of the likes," she said in the new clip. "Yeah, it's been so nuts the last 24 hours or so. I just wanted to say thanks for everyone that's following me now. Hopefully, I can put some good content up after this."

Ultimately, though, Whitney just wants people to understand the realities that low-income families are facing in a time of widespread panic and uncertainty.

"Some people may not get paid as often, or as much, which makes it hard to get to the stores and buy in bulk," she explained. "I just hope it makes them stop and realize that other people need these things as much as they do."

Mel Brooks' son on their viral coronavirus social distancing video: 'We all have a role to play so let's do our part' - ABC News

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 11:22 PM PDT

Max Brooks said his father and other comedic legends were doing OK.

Author Max Brooks is sharing why he and his famous father, comedic filmmaker and actor Mel Brooks, made that viral social media video urging people to practice social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Brookses posted the 51-second video on Twitter on Monday.

"Hi, I'm Max Brooks. I'm 47 years old. This is my dad, Mel Brooks. ... He's 93," Max Brooks says in the video as his father stands on the other side of a glass door. "If I get the coronavirus, I'll probably be OK. But if I give it to him, he could give it to Carl Reiner, who could give it to Dick Van Dyke, and before I know it, I've wiped out a whole generation of comedic legends."

"When it comes to coronavirus," Max Brooks continues, "I have to think about who I can infect, and so should you. So practice social distancing. Avoid crowds. Wash your hands. Keep 6 feet away from people. And if you've got the option to stay home, just stay home."

"Do your part. Don't be a spreader," Max Brooks says at the end of the Twitter video. "Right, dad?"

"Go home. Go," Mel Brooks says, waving his son away before smiling and waving at the camera.

Max Brooks told ABC News on Wednesday that he had seen his message spread across the internet. As of Wednesday, the video had more than 15 million views.

"When I shot that video, I couldn't go in the house. So that bit about me waving to him through the glass, that was real. I haven't hugged my dad since this started. Neither has my son, and that's how it's going to have to be," he said.

Max Brooks said that everyone mentioned in that viral video is doing OK, including his father.

"Dad's OK. I just spoke to him a little while ago. ... As far as I know, this generation of comedic legends is OK," Max Brooks said. "As individual citizens... we have a duty to buy time for science and industry. We all have a role to play so let's do our part."

PM: Kids could miss 'year of education' - Ipswich Advertiser

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 10:55 PM PDT

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended his policy to keep Australian schools open despite the coronavirus pandemic, saying shutting them now could lead to children missing a "whole year of their education."

Speaking on Sky News Wednesday night, the PM said Australians need to wake up to the fact that social distancing measures will be in place for at least six months and could get tougher yet.

"There seems to be a view … that somehow you can just turn the tap off for two weeks and all of a sudden we've got through the coronavirus, that's just not true," he said.

"People who are thinking about it in those terms are really not understanding the scale of what's happening here."

"Six months is in indicative and I certainly don't think at this point that it will be any less than that," he said.

coronaviruspromo

The PM said social distancing measures are designed to be sustainable and may be scaled up in future.

In regard to the decision to leave schools open which has been a source of criticism and confusion for governments in Australia and the UK, he said it's a balance of weighing up health advice against the economic impact of the closure.

"What you do, you've got to keep doing for the next six months. Shut them down, they won't open again. And that means your children will miss what is effectively a whole year of their education.

"Now if there's not a good health reason to do that and risk the child's education or cause them rather significant economic cost...you should keep the schools open. And that's why I've formed such a strong view on this."

On Wedneday governments in Scotland and Wales announced they would close schools after staff losses due to isolation made continuing as normal unsustainable. The English govenrment is expected to follow suit.

Meanwhile Italian and French authorities cracked down on those not obeying lockdown laws. Italy's Lombardy Governor Attilo Fontana said he would be asking the central government for stricter measures to keep people at home. Paris police have already issued more than 500 fines to those violating bans against non-essential movement.

Mr Morrison reiterated the fact that eight out of ten people with coronavirus are likely to get a mild illness and said Australia needs people to continue going to work including healthcare staff and those who do critical jobs like keep the supermarket shelves stocked.

He said the government is also looking at ways to "cushion the blow" for those running small businesses as the virus had "pushed pause" on the global economy.

"This is on a scale that none of us have seen before unless we have been around this planet for a very long time," he said.

"There will be a bounce back, there will be a return. There will be that uptick."

The government has already told Australians not to leave the country and banned non-essential indoor gatherings of more than 100 people.

Restrictions have been put in place for visitors to aged care homes and Australians have been warned to stop hoarding groceries.

National coronavirus cases are approaching 560, an increase of 400 in five days, and six people have died.

Coronavirus: Jacinda Ardern dismisses rumours being spread on social media about COVID-19 - Newshub

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 10:55 PM PDT

Watch: Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has dismissed rumours spreading online about COVID-19. Credits: Newshub

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is dismissing rumours and information circulating on social media that hasn't been shared by the Government amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I've been watching for some days - and this is not unique to New Zealand - that in the midst of what is a global issue, as you would expect, there are a number of rumours that circulate," Ardern said on Thursday in Rotorua.

"I am present on social media, I see it myself - I cannot go around and individually dismiss every single rumour I see on social media, as tempted as I might be.

"Instead, I want to send a clear message to the New Zealand public: We will share with you the most up-to-date information daily. You can trust us as a source of information.

"You can also trust the Director-General of Health [Dr Ashley Bloomfield] and the Ministry of Health."

The Prime Minister pointed to the Government's website dedicated to providing information about the coronavirus spread: www.covid19.govt.nz, and said to "dismiss anything else" you may see online.

"We will continue to be your single source of truth and we will provide information frequently. We will share everything we can. Everything else you see [take with] a grain of salt."

Rumours have been spreading online of an imminent lockdown in Australia and New Zealand, and the Prime Minister dismissed it entirely.

"That's the kind of thing that adds to the anxiety that people feel, so I continue to share the message: New Zealanders must prepare but do not panic," she said.

"When you see those messages, remember that unless you hear it from us, it is not the truth."

The rumour has also been shut-down by Australian authorities

The current rules are that anyone arriving in New Zealand must self-isolate for 14 days. That applies to every nation, except for 17 Pacific Island regions.

The Prime Minister said the world is facing an "unprecedented" situation, and acknowledged that every Kiwi will be feeling anxiety and will be looking abroad at how quickly the virus is spreading.

"The world is experiencing this right now," Ardern said. "But I want to again just share that the last thing we want is that anxiety based on misinformation."

The Ministry of Health confirmed shortly after the Prime Minister spoke that New Zealand now has 28 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, up from 20 a day ago.

Battling coronavirus, California asks Navy for hospital ship and two mobile hospitals - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 10:48 PM PDT

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that the state has asked the Department of Defense to deploy the Navy's Mercy hospital ship and two mobile hospitals to California to help care for the expected surge in hospitalizations of residents stricken by the novel coronavirus.

California has seen the number of confirmed cases continue to rise: at least 836 cases and 17 deaths as of Wednesday, compared with 157 cases and three deaths the week before. Nearly 12,000 people in the state are self-monitoring for symptoms.

The governor said the state is working to expand its cache of hospital beds by roughly 20,000, the number needed if more than half of Californians come down with the coronavirus.

"That's just one scenario plan. There's others that are more modest. Some may, some cases be more extreme," Newsom said Wednesday evening during a Facebook Live broadcast. "When you're looking at getting an additional [19,000] to 20,000 beds in your system, you have to look at your existing surge capacity within the healthcare delivery system, and you have to look at procuring additional assets."

The state estimates that surge capacity in California's existing hospital system could accommodate 10,000 patients.

The state also is in the process of procuring two hospitals that are currently off-line, one in Southern California and one in Northern California, along with leasing hotels and motels where coronavirus patients could be housed and treated.

If requests for the military medical assistance are granted, California should be close to reaching the 20,000-bed threshold, Newsom said.

Maple Leafs' William Nylander: Records first 30-goal season - CBSSports.com

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:50 PM PDT

Nylander has 31 goals and 59 points in 68 games this season.

After scoring at just a half-point-per-game pace last season, Nylander answered critics with his first 30-goal campaign in 2019-20. The 23-year-old forward scored 17 of his 59 points on the man advantage. If the NHL completes the 2019-20 regular season, Nylander has a good shot at surpassing his previous career high of 61 points.

'We have to kick him, once each!' - Melo opens up on Brazil's plans to stop Messi - Goal.com

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:50 PM PDT

Felipe Melo has revealed that Brazil used to tactically kick out at Lionel Messi to disturb the Argentina star's rhythm as it was the only way they knew how to stop a player so "incredible".

Melo's career has taken him all over the world, with the veteran midfielder having played with the likes of Juventus, Galatasaray and Inter among others.

Internationally, the 36-year-old earned 22 caps for Brazil over a two-year span, starring for the Selecao across 2009-10.

During that time, he featured for Brazil's 2009 Confederations Cup team before heading to South Africa in 2010 as part of his country's World Cup squad.

And the midfielder, who now plies his trade for Palmeiras, admitted that his side had a plan to stop Messi when Brazil and Argentina collided, even if it wasn't necessarily one that would be commended as fair play.

"He's a unique player," Felipe Melo said to Clarin.

"When Brazil played against him we used to say 'we have to kick him once each, we have to rotate'.

"If we didn't, it was too difficult to mark him. We didn't want to break him, just to cut his rhythm and to disturb him - it was tactical."

Lionel Messi, Argentina

He added: "Messi is incredible, more so than Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Cristiano can score five goals for you, but Messi can score those five and then make his team-mates score as well. He's more complete."

Melo has long been known for his physicality, having been sent off in Brazil's quarter-final loss to the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup for a violent stamp on Arjen Robben.

The hard-nosed midfielder says that he has found differences in how matches are refereed in Europe and South America, with the game's physicality varying based on what country you're playing in.

"Referees break your balls everywhere, but they're different," he said.

Article continues below

"In England, if you kick someone the fans say 'ooooh' but the referee doesn't change his mind. But the same kick in Spain gets you sent off.

"In Brazil, some leave you and some send you off and that's why I love the Copa Libertadores.

"If you get a Brazilian referee, you can get sent off but with an Argentinian, not necessarily."

Swan dive: Latest ‘Masked Singer’ castoff is famous actress, former Disney star - Yahoo Entertainment

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:14 PM PDT

The Swan performs in Group C of 'The Masked Singer.' (Photo: Fox)

Everything has been canceled and the world as we know it has become a dark, dark place. Even Eurovision isn't happening this year. But at least we still have the magical, mystical, similarly bonkers The Masked Singer to keep us entertained and chip away at what collective sanity we have left. You know, I never expected to see Sarah Palin rapping "Baby Got Back" in a Care Bear onesie, nor did I expect that to not be the weirdest or most apocalyptic headline of last week. But, here we are.

Anyway, this week's eliminated celebrity cosplayer, whose shaky cover of Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself for Loving You" failed to get much love, was actress Bella Thorne — judge Ken Jeong's actual costar in the 2015 teen comedy The DUFF. But of course Ken didn't guess that, because he was too busy thinking the Swan was, once again, Björk. "That's classic Ken Jeong: never, ever guessing his costars. This is another Margaret Cho moment," laughed judge Jenny McCarthy, referring to that time in Season 1 when Jeong failed to recognize the comedian who'd played his own sister on Dr. Ken.

Ironically, Bella — whose character choice was a play on the name "Bella Swan" from Twilight — explained she decided to go on The Masked Singer because Ken kept guessing that last season's similarly feathered creature, the Flamingo, was her. (That turned out to be Adrienne Bailon.) "I retweeted that, and that made me super-excited. I started watching the show, and I just thought it was so, so amazing, so dope. And I was like, 'Let's do that,'" she said.

I'm just disappointed, because I was hoping this time Ken would be right and this really would be Björk. But now that the Swan has sung her, um, swan song, let's keep the America's favorite guessing game and much-needed diversion going, and play along at home. Who are Group C's Astronaut, Night Angel, T-Rex, and Rhino?

The Astronaut, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered"

First of all, this staging and set design were out-of-this-world, from the Daft Punk fembots hatching from neon Spinal Tap pods (who kind of looked like the androids from the above-mentioned Björk's "All Is Full of Love" video), to the HAL 9000 monitor with its Alien-from-Season 1 screensaver, to the MTV VMAs Moonman couture. The Astronaut's vocals were definitely stronger — and different, as Jenny noted — compared to last week's ballad, so this space cadet ought to stick to uptempo jams from now on.

The clues: Last week's cues were rather random, but this week there were references to a "circle of life," sign language, and being a young "bright star" that got burned. One key clue was his career got a boost due to an "organized crime family."

Judges' guesses: Donald Glover, Corey Feldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

My guess: The Astronaut really sounds likes country sensation Hunter Hayes, who was my guess last week. The internet thinks it is Hunter. But I think this could be Chris Colfer. Chris knows how to do sign language; he was just 19 when he started on Glee; and the first big hit out of Glee was "Don't Stop Believin'," which was also featured on the mob drama The Sopranos. "Circle of Life" was also performed on Glee

The Night Angel, "Million Reasons"

This flying purple people creature once again soared, establishing herself as the finest vocalist of Group C and possible all of Season 3. "It's such a difficult song to sing, and you just made that look so effortless," raved judge Nicole Scherzinger.

The clues: Last week, we saw a gang of nasty grandmas, plus a reference to and "the boy is mine." This week we saw a strawberry and castle, and the Night Angel said she was "sitting up in her room," surrounded by other angels, when she decided to "escape" from the pack and build her empire. This Masked Singer season, "destiny" led her back to the stage.

Judges' guesses: Monica, Regina King, Sia, Jessica Simpson, Taraji P. Henson.

My guess: So many clues are indicating this is Brandy (and I thought it was Monica last week), but the internet tells me this is Real Housewife Kandi Buruss, of girl group Xscape. I'm going to listen to the internet this time. Kandi didn't write "The Boy Is Mine" or "Sittin' Up in My Room," but she did cowrite Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills" and her empire also includes a restaurant called Old Lady Gang. For what it's worth, that empire has a line of strawberry-flavored lubricant.

The T-Rex, "Push It"

If actual T. Rexes had had this much stamina back in prehistoric times, they surely wouldn't have gone extinct. As Jenny said, this scaly superstar had "not the strongest voice, but the most crazy, amazing amount of energy." Plus, who doesn't like this awesome song choice? She p-pushed it real good. (Ignore the incorrect song title in the video below. Someone at Fox is apparently unfamiliar with this awesome jam.)

The clues: Last week, the T-Rex said she's a "survivor" who was "plucked out of obscurity" and deported to "an extraordinary place called T-Rex Island," where she was" one of dozens of talented creatures pirouetting the land, all similar in looks, strength, and skill." But then a "cataclysmic event" nearly rendered her extinct. This week she mentioned "singles and doubles," "bumblebee," and a "double dare."

Judges' guesses: Lily Singh, Liza Koshy, Mikaela Shiffrin.

My guess: Last week, I guessed this might be a U.S. Olympic gymnast. This week, I'm doubling down on that guess, and narrowing it down to double-double trickster and bee-sting survivor Simone Biles, who went through quite a cataclysmic event recently.

The Rhino, "Nice to Meet Ya"

This guy is clearly country superstar… but he's also got some moves, indicating that he's either a young guy with crossover-pop appeal or an athlete. Or both!

The clues: This tall, horny "risk-taker" was once on top, but then he "crashed and burned." He's from the South, rides a motorcycle, and was "saved" by his new bride.

Judges' guesses: Tim Tebow, Chris Pratt, Ryan Lochte

My guess: Last week, I guessed this was 6-foot-6, motorcycle-riding, troubled country star Trace Adkins. This week, I am switching my guess to 6-foot-3, motorcycle-riding, troubled country star Sam Hunt, who's been on enough planes to warrant wearing the Rhino's fighter-pilot uniform. It sure sounds like Sam, too.

Bruins' Patrice Bergeron: Posts third straight 30-goal season - CBSSports.com

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 08:50 PM PDT

Bergeron has 31 goals, 56 points and a plus-23 rating in 61 games this season.

If the 2019-20 NHL campaign is over, it would be the first season in Bergeron's career where he scored more goals (31) than assists (25). He's third in scoring among all Bruins skaters, behind only his "Perfection Line" partners Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak. The 34-year-old center has scored at least 30 goals in three straight seasons.

Here’s how the iPad’s new trackpad actually works - The Verge

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:55 PM PDT

Apple made it official: trackpad and mouse support is coming to the iPad. You can get it on an iPad Pro by spending $299 or $349 on Apple's new Magic Keyboard, get it on a regular iPad with Logitech's $150 keyboard case, use your existing Bluetooth mouse or trackpad, or presumably use any number of forthcoming accessories.

So the mouse support is there, but how will it work? The iPad and iPadOS are touch-based operating systems meant to be used with your big fat fingers, not tiny little pointers. Even when the Apple Pencil was introduced, they have stayed that way. Plus, more recently, iPadOS has increased the level of complexity for multitasking to 11 with support for multiple windows, split screens, slide-over windows, custom gestures for text editing, and more. Adding another input method to that mix could result in chaos.

We can answer some of your questions about how trackpad support will work today and we'll get a chance to actually use it ourselves in the public beta. In the meantime, here's what we definitely know about how it will work based on videos Apple has released publicly and on a video presentation given to reporters this morning.

  • The pointer will only appear when you need it. The mouse pointer won't be persistent on the screen at all times, instead only appearing when you're touching the trackpad.
  • The pointer is a little circular dot. Apple says that shape makes the most sense for the iPad, which again is fundamentally designed around touching with your fingers.
  • ...but it can change shape based on what it's pointing at. You know how your desktop mouse pointer turns into a hand, text cursor, or a little resize arrow depending on what it's pointing at? The iPad's pointer does a similar thing. But since so many of the UI elements on the iPad are big, touchable buttons, the way the iPad cursor changes is a little different. It changes shape to be the size of the touch-target area for the button. (If the animations bug you, apparently you will be able to turn them off.)

Here, it makes sense when you look at it in this slowed-down gif of Apple's hype video:

  • You can do mouse stuff you'd expect, like selecting cells in a spreadsheet or pinching and zooming.
  • It's probably going to be way better for manipulating text. Selecting, copying, pasting, and dragging blocks of text around is going to be way easier than the finger gymnastics the iPad currently requires.
  • It supports some navigation gestures. Although it won't work exactly like the Mac, there will be some gestures you can use. They include:
  1. Move your cursor to the bottom of the screen to bring up the dock.
  2. Click on the status icons in the upper right corner to bring up Control Center.
  3. Move your cursor to the right side of the screen to bring out Slide Over apps.
  4. Go home by swiping up with three fingers.
  5. Open multitasking by swiping up and holding with three fingers.
  6. Swipe between open apps by swiping left and right with three fingers.
  7. Swipe between Slide Over apps by swiping using three fingers when the cursor is inside a Slide Over app.

Plus, now that the developer beta is out, we're seeing support works for other things you might need, like hovering on elements in webpages:

That's a lot of gestures to remember, but no more than exist on the Mac. It seems overwhelming, but if you made a similar list for your MacBook or Windows machine, it would be just as intimidating. The iPad's gestures are just different. Here, let Apple's software boss Craig Federighi walk you through it all in this video.

How will all of this actually feel in practice? We'll know soon enough. The iPad's UI is powerful, but in many ways it's difficult to learn, in part because so many of us still have desktop UI paradigms in our heads.

One interesting thing you can't do is just have a bunch of traditional windows like you're used to having on a desktop or even a Windows tablet. Apple is sticking to its guns on its attempt to rethink how we move and rearrange windows on the iPad screen, with stuff like split screen and Slide Over. For better or worse (and I think for the better), the new trackpad features don't turn the iPad into a Mac.

Whether any of that radically changes this year with iPadOS 14 is anybody's guess. Federighi himself recently said, "If you like what you've seen us do with iPadOS, stay tuned, we're going to keep working on it."

Did Cristiano Ronaldo captain Manchester United? - Goal.com

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:50 PM PDT

Cristiano Ronaldo played with some true greats during his six-year spell at Manchester United, but did he ever captain the Red Devils?

The current Juventus ace rose to super-stardom in Manchester, winning three consecutive Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League trophy.

It was at Old Trafford that he truly developed into the goalscoring wizard that led him to leave for Real Madrid in 2009 on a blockbuster, then-world record fee – but was he ever named skipper? Goal takes a look.

Did Cristiano Ronaldo ever captain Manchester United?

The ex-Real Madrid striker captained Manchester United on one occasion, during a routine victory against Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford on March 19, 2008.

Ronaldo was the stand-in skipper for Ryan Giggs, who was left on the bench alongside Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

The Portugal superstar netted both goals in the comfortable 2-0 home victory in true captain form, scoring his first strike after just nine minutes on the clock once Carlos Tevez's initial attempt at a bicycle kick was saved.

Ronaldo's first goal against Bolton brought him level with Man Utd legend George Best's record of 32 goals from a midfielder in a single season in 1967-68 (Ronaldo started playing as a winger for Sporting, but Sir Alex Ferguson had him play as a midfielder at Old Trafford as the Scot already had the likes of Rooney and Tevez as options up front).

He broke Best's record just 10 minutes later in the 19th minute after getting fouled 10 yards away from the box, scoring with a dipping shot to double the scoreline.

The second goal was his 24th strike of the campaign, placing him four goals clear of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres' tally at the top of the Premier League top-scorers list.

Article continues below

The defeat of Bolton lifted the Red Devils three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table with eight fixtures remaining in the campaign.

Manchester United were eventually crowned winners of that season's Premier League, clinching their 10th English top-flight victory (and their 17th top-division title overall in England).

T-Mobile Closing Most, Not All of Its Stores - Motley Fool

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:48 PM PDT

During this unprecedented period of social distancing, smartphones have become a lifeline for many people. With so many families no longer having a landline, smartphones are some people's strongest link to the outside world while they self-quarantine or limit contact with the outside world.

That makes it important for wireless carriers like T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) to keep its customers' devices functioning. Servicing those customers is why the company has decided to close 80% of its stores but keep the rest open on a limited basis.

The interior of a T-Mobile store

T-Mobile has closed 80% of its retail stores. Image source: T-Mobile.

What is T-Mobile doing?

COO Mike Sievert (who takes over as CEO later this year) sent an email to employees explaining how it would be supporting social distancing. That includes closing 80% of its company-owned retail stores at least until the end of the month.

The stores that remain open will "operate on reduced schedules and only stay open for eight hours each day -- from 10 am to 6 pm local time for most stores," according to a press release. T-Mobile also plans to reduce staff at its In Care facilities (which are not open to the public) to allow employees to maintain distance. In addition, the company has increased hygiene and sanitization efforts at all of its facilities.

A smart balance

T-Mobile plans to spread the open stores across the country. Customers should only visit in an emergency situation where not having a working phone will put you in danger.

Remember that T-Mobile remains open for business online and its call centers are operating (albeit with measures being taken to keep employees apart). If you can meet your needs digitally or over the phone that remains the right thing to do.

Coronavirus response: Trump administration wants to send $500 billion in payments to Americans in two rounds - CNBC

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:25 PM PDT

President Donald J. Trump speaks with his coronavirus task force in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic during a briefing in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 in Washington, DC.

The Trump administration's proposed stimulus package to combat economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic will include two rounds of direct payments to taxpayers totaling $500 billion, according to a document obtained by NBC.

The White House hopes to send out its first round of checks on April 6, and the second on May 18. It will base payments on income level and family size, according to the document.

Beyond direct payments, the government is looking to set aside $50 billion for the ailing airline industry, as well as $150 billion for "other distressed sectors." It was not immediately clear which industries would be covered, but the tourism and hotel industries are among those that have also asked the government for relief.

The administration is also looking to roll out a business interruption loan program of $300 billion to aid smaller companies that have had to temporarily shut their doors, or otherwise curtail commerce during the pandemic.

The administration is hoping to push out a stimulus package that could top $1 trillion as soon as this week. First it must be approved by Congress.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the Senate passed a bill drafted in the House that expands paid leave and unemployment benefits in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The COVID-19 virus, which is believed to have originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has quickly spread to dozens of countries globally. There are more than 201,000 confirmed cases worldwide and at least 8,007 deaths so far, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

There are at least 6,496 cases in the United States and at least 114 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins.

List of celebrities with coronavirus: ‘Frozen 2’ actress, more test positive for COVID-19 - syracuse.com

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:14 PM PDT

Stars: They're just like us, and can get sick from coronavirus. The list of celebrities with COVID-19 continues to grow, with big names like Tom Hanks, Kevin Durant and Idris Elba all testing positive in the past week.

Here are the most recognizable figures with coronavirus, as of Wednesday, March 18:

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson -- The celebrity couple said they were in isolation in Australia after testing positive for COVID-19. "There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness," Hanks said. "We are taking it one day at a time." They left the hospital five days after they were admitted, but remain in isolation.

Idris Elba -- "The Wire" star tested positive for coronavirus, he announced Monday. "I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus," the 47-year-old actor and DJ said. "Stay home people and be pragmatic. I will keep you updated on how I'm doing. No panic."

Kristofer Hivju -- The "Game of Thrones" actor, who played Tormund Giantsbane, said he tested positive for COVID-19 and is self-isolating at home with his family. "We are in good health - I only have mild symptoms of a cold. There are people at higher risk for who this virus might be a devastating diagnosis, so I urge all of you to be extremely careful; wash your hands, keep 1,5 meters distance from others, go in quarantine; just do everything you can to stop the virus from spreading," he said. "Please take care of each other, keep your distance, and stay healthy!"

Rachel Matthews -- The 26-year-old "Frozen 2" actress, who voiced Honeymaren in the animated Disney movie, revealed the news via Instagram late Monday (March 16), saying that she has quarantined herself for the past week.

Olga Kurylenko -- The 40-year-old actress, best known for playing a Bond girl opposite Daniel Craig's 007 in the 2008 movie "Quantum of Solace," said she's "locked up at home after having tested positive for Coronavirus. I've actually been ill for almost a week now. Fever and fatigue are my main symptoms. Take care of yourself and do take this seriously!"

Other celebs who are battling coronavirus include Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson; Heidi Klum is awaiting test results and "Today" show co-hosts Al Roker and Craig Melvin skipped Monday's broadcast after a co-worker tested positive for COVID-19.

Sophie Trudeau -- Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau's wife, Sophie, tested positive for COVID-19. "She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild," Trudeau's office said in a statement. The couple is currently taking doctors' advice by undergoing 14 days of isolation.

Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell -- The Utah Jazz basketball players both tested positive for coronavirus. Gobert's diagnosis came shortly after he joked about feeling sick and touching every microphone and recording device at a media event, prompting the NBA to suspend its season indefinitely. Mitchell tested positive shortly afterwards and Gobert apologized.

Callum Hudson-Odoi -- The 19-year-old Chelsea Football Club player said Friday that he had recovered after testing positive but was following health guidelines and isolating himself from others. "I'm feeling good and hope to see you all soon," the British soccer star said. "Stay home, but find a way to work."

Francis Suarez -- The mayor of Miami, Florida, announced Friday that he tested positive for coronavirus. "I feel completely healthy and strong," he said, vowing to remain in isolation while continuing to govern the city remotely.

Kevin Durant -- The NBA superstar and three other players on the Brooklyn Nets have tested positive for coronavirus. KD said he's feeling fine and not showing any symptoms, but remains in isolation. "Everyone be careful, take care of yourself and quarantine," Durant told The Athletic. "We're going to get through this."

Others affected by the coronavirus include Al Roker and Craig Melvin, who are staying home from the "Today" show after a third-hour co-worker tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. Savannah Guthrie also broadcast from home on Wednesday after getting a sore throat and a runny nose. Heidi Klum is self-isolating while awaiting test results; her husband Tom Kaulitz recently tested negative. Rapper Drake is reportedly self-isolating at his mansion in Toronto after partying with Kevin Durant recently.

Concerns About Ibuprofen And COVID-19 Are Overblown, Most Experts Say : Shots - Health News - NPR

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 06:55 PM PDT

There's "currently no scientific evidence establishing a link between ibuprofen and worsening of COVID‑19," the European Medicines Agency advised Wednesday. REKINC1980/Getty Images hide caption

toggle caption
REKINC1980/Getty Images

Over the last few days, social media has lit up with reports, picked up by some media outlets, that taking drugs like ibuprofen to ease COVID-19 symptoms could actually worsen the progress of the illness.

But most infectious disease experts say there's no good scientific evidence at this point to support that claim.

The furor was sparked by a tweet by the French health minister, Olivier Véran, over the weekend. He warned people not to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS — a category of pain relievers and fever reducers that includes ibuprofen — because some French COVID-19 patients had experienced serious side effects. The warning was also included in a bulletin from the French health ministry, which counseled that patients should instead use acetaminophen, the generic name for Tylenol.

But the European Medicines Agency issued a statement Wednesday saying that while it is monitoring the situation, there's "currently no scientific evidence establishing a link between ibuprofen and worsening of COVID‑19."

Dr. Carlos del Rio, a professor of infectious diseases and global health at Emory University's Department of Medicine agrees. "I think the Minister of Health of France is wrong [in] prohibiting the use of ibuprofen based on limited data," he says.

The World Health Organization is looking into the matter, says spokesperson Christian Lindmeier, "but after a rapid review of the literature, [the WHO] is not aware of published clinical or population-based data on this topic." A few media outlets have reported that WHO is now advising against using ibuprofen to treat fevers in patients with COVID-19 symptoms, but Lindmeier tells NPR that's not true.

The questions about ibuprofen's safety for COVID-19 patients seem to have stemmed, in part, from a letter published in The Lancet last week hypothesizing the ways various medications could, perhaps, increase the risk of infection with the coronavirus. Research has shown that the virus attaches itself to cells in the lungs by way of an enzyme — angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). The Lancet commentary suggested that taking ibuprofen might increase the number of ACE2 receptors on a cell, which could make someone taking the drug more vulnerable to infection.

But just because you have more ACE2 receptors doesn't mean you're more susceptible to infection, says Rachel Graham, a virologist at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. She's one of the researchers who discovered how the coronavirus binds to cells.

"You can have low levels of ACE2 and still be susceptible," Graham says. What's more, she adds, the evidence that taking ibuprofen increases these receptors is almost nonexistent.

"This is why we have clinical trials to inform our medical decision-making," rather than relying on a few anecdotal cases, says Dr. Krutika Kuppalli, an infectious disease physician and Fellow with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security. Kuppalli says she doesn't see the Lancet letter as a reason to avoid ibuprofen for COVID-19, though she always tells her patients to use Tylenol for fever "because its mechanism is thought to affect the temperature regulating center of the brain."

Dr. Angela Rogers, an assistant professor at the Stanford University Medical Center and chair of its intensive care unit's COVID-19 task force, notes that Tylenol is the go-to medication for patients who are sick enough to be hospitalized for any infection. That's because these patients are at higher risk of damage to internal organs, including kidneys. And kidney damage can be a side effect of ibuprofen for some patients who use it long-term in higher doses.

Of course Tylenol, like any medicine, isn't risk-free either; Rogers notes it can cause serious liver damage in high doses. In low doses, though, she says, Tylenol is "very effective" for reducing fever and "very safe."

As for what Rogers would advise for patients who are treating symptoms of COVID-19 at home?

"We don't have a lot of evidence in this disease in general," she says. Like the other physicians and scientists NPR spoke with, Rogers emphasizes that any evidence that ibuprofen exacerbates the coronavirus disease is faint at best. That said, "If people have no liver disease and it makes them feel a little bit more secure to start with Tylenol first, that might be a reasonable way to do it."

WHO officials warn US President Trump against calling coronavirus 'the Chinese virus' - CNBC

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 06:25 PM PDT

World Health Organization officials warned against calling COVID-19 the "Chinese virus" as President Donald Trump has done, saying that it could unintentionally lead to racial profiling.

"Viruses know no borders and they don't care about your ethnicity, the color of your skin or how much money you have in the bank. So it's really important we be careful in the language we use lest it lead to the profiling of individuals associated with the virus," Dr. Mike Ryan, the executive director of WHO's emergencies program, said at a news conference Wednesday when asked about Trump's comments inciting violence against Asians.

Since emerging from Wuhan, China, just over three months ago, the new coronavirus has spread to almost every country around the world, infecting more than 212,000 people and killing at least 8,727 as of Wednesday afternoon, according to data compiled by John's Hopkins University.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates agreed with Ryan, writing in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit on Wednesday that "we should not call this the Chinese virus."

Trump defended his characterization of the coronavirus at a White House news conference discussing the pandemic Wednesday.

"It's not racist at all," Trump said, "No, not at all."

Trump was asked about his persistent use of the term "Chinese virus" despite reports that dozens of incidents of bias against Chinese Americans who have been blamed for allegedly spreading the coronavirus.

"Because it comes from China," Trump said to the reporter who asked him that question. "That's why."

WHO officials intentionally gave the virus a generic name to avoid stigmatizing a country or particular group, choosing a name that doesn't refer to a geographical location, animals, an individual or a group of people. The CO stands for corona, the VI for virus and the D for disease. COVID-19 was first detected late last year.

"Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatizing," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said when the new name was announced Feb. 11.

Ryan repeated WHO's calls for solidarity, saying that characterizing a virus in such a manner could result in xenophobic behavior and "I'm sure anyone would regret profiling a virus along those lines."

"This is a time for solidarity, this is a time for facts, this is a time to move forward together, to fight this virus together. There is no blame in this," he said. "All we need now is to identify the things we need to do to move forward quickly, with speed and to avoid any indication of ethnic or other associations with this virus."

-- CNBC's William FeuerJordan Novet and Dan Mangan contributed to this article.

Man Utd legend Neville offers free hotel beds to NHS workers in coronavirus containment battle - Goal.com

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 06:20 PM PDT

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has announced that he will provide free hotel beds for NHS workers in two of the hotels he part-owns with ex-old Trafford colleague Ryan Giggs, as the battle to contain the spread of coronavirus continues.

All professional football in England has been suspended indefinitely due to the Covid-19 outbreak, with 2,626 cases confirmed in the United Kingdom to date and 104 deaths.

Prime m

inister Boris Johnson has confirmed that all schools in the country are to close from Friday, and further measures are expected to be put in place in coming the days.

A number of Premier League clubs have been attempting to aid a collective effort to combat the ongoing crisis, including Chelsea, whose billionaire owner Roman Abramovich has hit headlines for offering to put up medical workers at the Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge free of charge.

Neville has followed suit by putting his own plans in place to help NHS staff at Hotel Football, the institution near Old Trafford which he co-owns through the GG Hospitality group.

"Over the last week we have been in consultation with the health services in the Greater Manchester area, in particular, the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust," Neville said in a social media post on Wednesday afternoon.

"Our 176 beds will be occupied by National Health Service workers and medical professionals from Friday onwards.

"It's at this time that I think the whole of our industry needs to show solidarity, not just for our staff in these uncertain times but obviously for those who need the accommodation most in the coming months.

"It's something we're delighted to have come into agreement with. It will operate free of charge and our staff will operate the hotels as normal.

"The health workers will be able to stay there without any cost whatsoever in these next few months when they need isolation away from family members who may be affected by what's going on.

"Stay safe and we wish everybody all the best."

Mom cries in viral video when she can't find diapers to buy - TODAY

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 05:22 PM PDT

Lauren Whitney was having a tough week when she went to her local Walmart to get diapers for her 18-month-old daughter, Rosalynd. But when she got to the aisle, there was nothing left in Rosalynd's size.

It was just too much for the mom of four from Washington, Utah.

"So basically I've just had like a really rough week," Whitney told TODAY Parents. "I was demoted at work for a really stupid reason, and it just kinda created stress. I went to a few other stores first. I ended up at Walmart and I was just looking for diapers...and there was just none in her size anywhere. And I think it was the straw that broke the camel's back for the week. And my emotions kind of bubbled up and I was like, 'Somebody needs to hear this.'"

Whitney took to TikTok and recorded a video of herself crying, a video that has since gone viral with more than 5 million views.

Whitney, who works part-time at a movie theater to help subsidize her family's income, said that for her family, she doesn't have the opportunity to bulk buy like some.

"There's so many people out there like myself that we, we don't get paid very much," she explained, adding that her husband is ex-military and a full-time student. "So, you know, we're low income families and so it's hard for us to be able to just go out and buy a large amount of things at one time."

"When we do have the funds to be able to go purchase things and it's not there for us to buy, it's very frustrating," Whitney said. "So those people that are buying in bulk or that are clearing the shelves make it harder for those of us that either are low income or only get paid every two weeks or even once a month."

Panic buying refers to the phenomenon when consumers buy unusually large amounts of a product in anticipation of, or after, a disaster or perceived disaster, or in anticipation of a large price increase or shortage.

On Sunday, the National Retail Federation and the Retail Industry Leaders Association urged shoppers to restrain themselves from hoarding, asking that if they didn't need an item in the next two weeks to leave it for someone else who does.

"Hoarding and stockpiling creates unnecessary gaps between the time that someone who truly needs a product can find it back on retailers' shelves," they said in a statement. "This is particularly important for our most vulnerable neighbors — the elderly and those who are struggling with other health issues."

Since going viral, Whitney says she has received lots of positive comments in her inbox, but there have been many haters as well.

"We've had a lot of negative ones," she explained. "People saying things like, 'Don't have children if you can't afford them' or 'why are you crying? This is nothing to cry about.'"

Whitney says many people also have asked how they can help, even offering to send money or diapers.

"I had to respond to every single one saying, 'Hey, we're fine. We're okay. I was able to find some,' but it's so wonderful to see all the positive comments."

Whitney said she's "really hoping that other people can just stop and think that there are other families out there that might also need things."

"I just hope that people can understand that by purchasing 10 or 20 boxes at a time, it leaves nothing for those of us that can't do that."

Hundreds of Metro by T-Mobile workers moving to new Frisco headquarters - The Dallas Morning News

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 05:18 PM PDT

One of the country's top wireless companies is moving its headquarters from Richardson to Frisco.

Metro by T-Mobile is doubling its office space with its relocation to the Duke Bridges VII building at 3560 Dallas Parkway. The new office will house 500 employees.

Metro by T-Mobile is taking all four floors of building at Warren Parkway and the Dallas North Tollway, which can house up to 1,200 workers.

The new address is just east of the Dallas Cowboys' Star development and is near T-Mobile's regional office in the Duke Bridges business park.

"This relo has been in the works since 2019, and the actual relocation won't take place until it's appropriate for employees to return to the office," a T-Mobile USA spokesperson said in an email. "For the last few weeks, T-Mobile has been encouraging its employees to work remotely as much as possible."

The home market could see falling prices and rising foreclosures due to the pandemic.

Metro by T-Mobile was created in the 2013 merger between Richardson-based MetroPCS and T-Mobile.

Since then, it has doubled its prepaid wireless customer base and distribution across the country and expanded its workforce by thousands.

And the company had outgrown its headquarters on Lakeside Boulevard.

Along with the Metro by T-Mobile employees moving to Frisco, other workers from T-Mobile marketing, IT, engineering, human resources and finance will be shifted to the 200,000-square-foot building.

The new workspace includes collaborative spaces and a cafeteria.

The space previously housed operations for Conifer Health Solutions.

Scott Hobbs of Cushman & Wakefield negotiated the new office lease with Jeff Ellerman of CBRE.

Hobbs said Metro by T-Mobile picked the building because of its location adjacent to the company's nearby office "in addition to the quality and energy of the immediate area overall."

T-Mobile has been in the Duke Bridges office campus since 2005 and already had more than 1,000 workers there.
