'The price tag is phenomenal' - Ferdinand backs Man Utd's Bellingham gamble - Goal.com

Posted: 25 Mar 2020 12:31 AM PDT

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has backed the club's pursuit of Birmingham City prodigy Jude Bellingham but concedes the reported price tag is "phenomenal".

Bellingham, still just 16 years of age, has starred this season in the Championship, scoring four goals and contributing two assists across 32 league appearances.

Set to turn 17 at the end of June, clubs across Europe have quickly shown interest in the midfielder with the Red Devils most strongly linked with a possible transfer.

With United reportedly ready to offer around £30 million (€32m/$35m) for Bellingham, Ferdinand admits that though that fee is hard to fathom for such a young player, the gamble could be worth taking.

"Jude Bellingham, huge talent, huge talent, really good-looking footballer in the way he plays, the balance he's got, the maturity at such a young age," Ferdinand said on Instagram Live.

"I want to see more but the price tag is phenomenal. £30 million odd for a kid, for a 16-year-old boy, it's unbelievable.

"But it's the way of the world now and the way you've got to think about it, if you're paying £30m, if we keep him for 10 years it's money well spent.

"It's a gamble, it's an expensive gamble, but the kid to be playing in the Championship and doing what he's doing and looking the player he is, it's a gamble but a calculated one.

"I think he's someone I would 100 per cent take. If I'm Man United now, go in and get him."

With Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool among other clubs linked to Bellingham, Birmingham manager Pep Clotet stressed earlier in March that the teenager remains focused on the club he's currently contracted to.

"I always thought he is very mature and very focused – but he has to be," Clotet told reporters.

"Because he cannot be thinking about other things than Birmingham City – and I am sure he is only thinking about Birmingham City.

"That's the feeling I get from him, when I speak to him and work with him."

Bellingham has been with Birmingham City since Under-8's and became the club's youngest ever first-team player when he made his senior debut in August 2019 against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup

White House and Senate strike a deal on coronavirus stimulus bill - CNBC

Posted: 25 Mar 2020 12:07 AM PDT

The White House and Senate leaders reached a deal early Wednesday on a massive $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill to combat the economic impact of the outbreak.

"At last we have a deal," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said around 1:37 a.m. ET from the floor of the Senate.

"In effect, this is a war-time level of investment into our nation," McConnell said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, "This is not a moment of celebration but one of necessity."

McConnell said the Senate will vote and pass the legislation later Wednesday. The full text of the bill has not yet been released.

One of the key issues in negotiations was the terms of the airline aid and oversight that comes with it, two people familiar with the situation told CNBC. Democrats have pushed for a number of stipulations along with aid to the industry, including longterm bans on stock buybacks, limits on executive compensation, commitments not to furlough workers and board representation.

President Donald Trump stressed in a press conference Tuesday that the money the U.S. lends "will be coming back" to it. The airlines have pushed for half of their aid in grants, arguing debt from loans would be too onerous.

One of the sources said there continued to be questions around oversight of the $500 billion fund that Republicans have proposed to support distressed companies. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said the Federal Reserve could leverage the loans in the fund to offer up to $4 trillion in financing. The mechanics, though, are still in question, said the source.

Democrats, still angry over the leeway banks got in the 2008 bank bailout, have argued the fund gives the Treasury too much discretion. One option being considered is a weekly check-in with companies borrowing from the fund, the source said.

Still, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and  National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow all spoke optimistically about the fund Tuesday. They said there are plans to add more oversight to that fund, with the addition of an oversight board and an inspector general.

"It will be completely transparent," Kudlow said at a coronavirus task force briefing Tuesday at the White House.

Schumer had earlier in the day indicated in a speech on the Senate floor the fund was a key focus for Democrats.

Still, the two parties have worked already worked through a number of disagreements.

For the Democrats, that includes securing more funding for hospitals, and a state and local stimulus fund as part of their "Marshall Plan." Schumer touted on the Senate floor unemployment insurance on steroids, which promised beneficiaries insurance for four months.

A draft bill from early Tuesday afternoon has had language stipulating a $350 billion fund for small businesses to mitigate layoffs and support payroll.

It also offered cash payments of up to $1,200 for individuals, $2,400 for married couples and $500 per child. Those amounts are reduced if an individual makes more than $75,000 or a couple makes more than $150,000.

President Donald Trump, describing the proposal as a $2 trillion package, said Tuesday that "we are working to pass the biggest and boldest financial relief package in American history."

Friendlier tone

The day started, for the large part, on an optimistic note that stood in contrast to the bitter partisanship the took up the Senate floor the day before.

The Senate GOP's bill failed to clear a key procedural hurdle Monday after a similar result Sunday.

Democrats had accused Republicans of favoring Big Business over workers and healthcare. Republicans said Democrats were causing unnecessary delay by focusing on issues outside the economic crisis facing the country, like giving more bargaining power to unions, increasing fuel emissions standards for airlines, and wind and solar tax credits.

Pelosi rolled out her own House proposal Monday which, though unlikely to become law, further rankled Republicans.

Trump started the day pushing for a deal on Twitter. "Congress must approve the deal, without all of the nonsense, today," he tweeted Tuesday morning. "The longer it takes, the harder it will be to start up our economy."

Uncertainty over the deal has rattled markets. Hospitals, workers and individuals have all said they need money now.

Mnuchin and Schumer met six times on Monday, ending on a positive note around midnight. The two picked up negotiations again at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

A bit later in the day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told CNBC that there was "real optimism" Congress can clinch a pact within a few hours. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the bill is at the "five-yard line."

Just before 11:00 a.m., Mnuchin, Schumer and Rep. Mark Meadows, Trump's incoming chief of staff, held a meeting in Schumer's office.

After the meeting, Schumer said on the Senate floor that negotiators were on the "two-yard line." Issues can be resolved within hours, he added.

While negotiations carried on longer than Schumer forecasted, Kudlow said early Tuesday evening the parties were making "great progress."

"They're getting close and closer, they expect a vote as soon as possible," Kudlow said.

Optimism over the potential deal helped drive the Dow Jones Industrial Average up more than 11% Tuesday, notching its biggest one-day percentage gain since 1933.

Bailout fund

Still, questions around the $500 billion fund remained.

Schumer said Tuesday that Democrats were making "very good progress" in their efforts to add "incentive or mandate" for companies receiving federal loans or grants to keep their employees.

It remains unclear whether the government will demand equity of any of the companies it offers aid to, although lawmakers said the government has considered demanding warrants as part of its airline aid. There has been resistance to equity stakes, which dilute shareholders and give the government stronger oversight, lobbyists have told CNBC.

Boeing CEO David Calhoun told Fox News Tuesday that if the government "forces" an equity stake, then  "we just look at all the other options. And we've got plenty of them."

"It's just not ideal for us, our suppliers, and all of those companies spread throughout the United States," he added.

Trump has previously offered his support of the aerospace company, saying "we have to protect Boeing." He has also said he would consider urging the government to take an equity stake in companies that have bought back stock.

Airline aid

Lawmakers considered providing at least some of the aid to airlines, among the hardest hit companies from the crisis, in the form of cash grants, according to a person familiar with the matter. A Senate aide cautioned, though, the terms are still being negotiated and could change.

Cash grants would be a victory for airline executives who were pleading with lawmakers to have half of the aid come in the form of cash grants, not just loans, which Republican senators had originally proposed. Labor leaders and executives have argued that saddling companies in debt through loans would make recovery even harder. U.S. airlines employ some 750,000 people.

Carriers have been racing to cut costs, grounding hundreds of planes and asking thousands of workers to take unpaid leave. Airlines are also tapping credit lines to shore up cash to weather the crisis, the impact of which they say is worse than 9/11.

U.S. airlines' lobbying group, Airlines for America, said the industry would commit to not furlough employees through Aug. 31 if they received grants.

Any deal the GOP-controlled Senate comes to ultimately needs to be passed by the Democratic-led House. It is possible Pelosi, who has been talking with Schumer, could push for more changes to the Senate bill before giving it the go-ahead.

Pelosi said Tuesday morning if the parties can compromise and have "unanimous consent" the bill can move quickly.

"If we don't have unanimous consent," she said, "my two options with my members is: we can call them back to vote to amend this bill, or to pass our own bill and then go to conference with that."

She added: "The easiest way to do that is to put aside some of our concerns for day and get this done … but if it has poison pills in it, and they know certain things are a poison pill, then they don't want unanimous consent."

Suspect Held in South Korean Crackdown on Sexually Explicit Videos - The New York Times

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 11:37 PM PDT

SEOUL, South Korea — The South Korean police on Wednesday asked prosecutors to indict a 24-year-old man on charges he blackmailed dozens of young women, including at least 16 minors, into making sexually explicit video clips that he sold online through encrypted chat rooms.

The case has galvanized nationwide attention to what women's rights advocates have called a growing problem in South Korea: a network of clandestine online chat rooms that lure young women with promises of high-paying jobs online and then exploit them sexually. Some estimates in the local news media say that up to 300,000 paying customers use these online chat rooms, in which operators go so far as to provide tailor-made footage for individual customers that often include extremely dehumanizing sex scenes, the police say.

The man in the latest case, Cho Joo-bin, has shared such illegal video footage since late 2018 through members-only chat rooms he operated on Telegram, an encrypted messaging service popular in South Korea, the police said.

Mr. Cho, who went by his online alias "The Doc," is the most infamous criminal suspect in the authorities' efforts to clamp down on the booming trade in such sexually explicit videos.

As he was escorted from a Seoul police station Wednesday morning on his way to the prosecutor's office, Mr. Cho said, "Thank you for stopping my life as a devil that I could not stop." But he did not respond when journalists asked him to comment on various criminal charges he faced.

The police did not release Mr. Cho's name or an image of him until Wednesday. South Korea usually protects criminal suspects' identities to respect their rights and that of their relatives. But it makes exceptions when the accused are public figures or are charged with particularly heinous crimes.

Since Mr. Cho's arrest last week, more than 2.6 million South Koreans have supported an online petition to President Moon Jae-in asking the government to reveal his name and face. Another petition, which asked the government to identify all customers of online chat rooms operated by Mr. Cho and others like him, has drawn nearly 1.9 million supporters.

On Wednesday, as it handed Mr. Cho over to prosecutors, the National Police Agency said it was revealing his identity because of what it called his "vicious and repetitive criminal method" in keeping 74 women, including 16 minors, in sexual "slavery."

In the past week, South Koreans have expressed increasing outrage as details of Mr. Cho's alleged criminal activities emerged in local media.

Mr. Cho attracted female victims with fake job offers online and then lured them into making sexually explicit video clips, promising them a big payout, the police said. Once he got hold of those compromising images, he used them as a blackmailing tool, threatening to release them online or to their friends and relatives unless the women supplied increasingly dehumanizing and even violent footage.

In the videos, some of the victims had the word "slave" marked on their bodies, local news media reported.

In recent years, the South Korean police have been cracking down on pornographic file-sharing websites as part of international efforts to fight child pornography. As they did so, they said they soon realized that much of the illegal trade in pornography was migrating to online chat rooms on social media messaging services like Telegram.

Telegram has become popular among many South Koreans who believe that such encrypted messaging apps help protect their freedom of speech. But the widening police investigation showed that such apps have also become important vehicles for the sex trade.

In September, the police arrested a chat-room operator known as "the Watchman." He turned out to be a 38-year-old office worker. Last month, the police arrested 66 people involved in the operation of other online chat rooms.

But "The Doc" had proven particularly elusive as he pursued his lucrative trade, luring customers with "trailer" clips on Telegram chat rooms and charging them more when they demanded more sexually explicit or perverted video clips, investigators said.

When the police finally caught him last week, "The Doc" turned out to be Mr. Cho, an ordinary looking graduate of a two-year vocational college in Incheon, west of Seoul, who once served as his campus newspaper's editor in chief. Mr. Cho has lived a double life, volunteering for a charity that aids handicapped or poor people, according to the local news media.

The police also apprehended a dozen accomplices, including young men in their 20s who were serving in government agencies as part of their mandatory military duty. Investigators were also looking for another anonymous chat room operator known as "GodGod."

On Monday, Mr. Moon promised a full investigation and stern punishment. He urged the police to investigate the customers of the chat rooms as well. Mr. Cho and his customers have often used cryptocurrency payments to throw the police off their trail, investigators said.

In 2017, South Korea revised laws to strengthen punishment for spycam pornography — the use of tiny, hidden cameras to film female victims, often in public bathrooms. Lee Jung-ok, the minister of gender equality and family, said this week that the government was working to further increase punishment for sexual crimes online.

Transfer news and rumours LIVE: Man Utd 'optimistic' of keeping Pogba - Goal.com

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 11:31 PM PDT

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen admits he has a big decision to make when it comes to his club future.

Coming to the end of his current Spurs contract, the Belgium international concedes he has plenty to consider before settling on his next step.

"I'm in a process right now that I have to grab a piece of paper and write down the pros and cons of the options I will have soon," Vertonghen told De Kleedkamer.

"I will really have to decide what I want in my career. In three to four years, I will normally return to the place where I will likely settle down.

"I have to start thinking about where I still want to live, what language I want to learn, what culture I still want to live in. And also very importantly: which competitions and prizes I still want to win. I don't want to regret anything in my career."

Indonesia invokes emergency measures in Jakarta, bonuses for doctors - Yahoo News

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 10:07 PM PDT

By Maikel Jefriando and Angie Teo

JAKARTA, March 23 (Reuters) - Indonesia's capital Jakarta shut cinemas and other public entertainment on Monday at the start of a two-week emergency period to try to slow the accelerating spread of the coronavirus in Southeast Asia's biggest city.

The new measures, which include urging people to work from home, still fall short of the tougher lockdowns imposed by neighbours amid concerns among some experts that the archipelago of 260 million people is not doing enough to contain the virus. National police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal said 465,000 police across Indonesia would disperse any public gatherings "for the sake of public safety" though a photograph posted on social media of a packed commuter train in Jakarta quickly went viral.

President Joko Widodo on Monday offered his condolences after a medical association said six doctors and nurses had died after contracting the virus.

"I would like to thank them for their hard work, for their dedication in dealing with COVID-19," said Widodo, speaking at the opening of an emergency hospital on the site of the "Athlete's Village" built for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

Indonesia has confirmed 514 cases of the virus and 48 deaths, mainly concentrated in Jakarta, whose governor on Friday admitted medical staff were already getting over-stretched.

Widodo said doctors and other medical staff would receive bonuses ranging from 5 million rupiah to 15 million rupiah ($300-$900) per month in regions that have declared an emergency. Aside from Jakarta, the East Java region has also declared an emergency.

The president has so far resisted calls for tougher lockdowns due to concerns about the impact on businesses and the poor, many of whom are vendors plying their trade on the streets.

The normally traffic-clogged streets of the city of 10 million were far quieter than usual on Monday and student volunteers at a crossing on a major road held up signs urging people to avoid crowds and stay home.

But Rocky Margiano Simanjuntak, 23, posted a photograph on social media from inside a packed early morning train on his way to work in the city at a bank.

"Government policies seem to be only half measures, just an appeal," Simanjuntak told Reuters via a message on his Instagram account, adding that public transport should not be limited unless authorities enforced rules to make people stay at home.

The commuter train company in a statement promised to return to normal operations to alleviate such crushes, but urged passengers to stay home. 'Mourinho wouldn't let Kane go to Man Utd' - Ferdinand doubts move for Tottenham talisman - Goal.com

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 09:31 PM PDT

Manchester United's planned move for Harry Kane could be scuppered by Jose Mourinho's presence at Tottenham, according to Rio Ferdinand.

Kane has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and the England captain is believed to be keen on the switch.

He is close to being fit enough for training after suffering a hamstring injury on New Year's Day, and former United defender Ferdinand says he would happily welcome him to Manchester.

"Would I take Harry Kane now? Of course you would," Ferdinand said on Instagram Live.

"If he's fit and he's raring to go, you take Harry Kane at Man Utd, 100 per cent.

"Top player, you're guaranteeing goals, in the Premier League you're guaranteeing goals.

"This geezer scores goals but I don't see Tottenham letting Harry Kane go.

"And with Mourinho there, I don't see Mourinho letting him go to Man Utd."

United have also known to be interested in Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, as rumours continue to circle surrounding the winger's future in the Bundesliga.

Jadon Sancho Borussia Dortmund 2019-20

"I would take Sancho all day, to Man Utd," Ferdinand said. "Whether we'll get him, though…

"Great player, great potential, English, he's brilliant. I would take Sancho now."

Meanwhile, Spurs and Mourinho are likely to be looking for signings of their own as they look to build on a disappointing 2019-20 season so far.

Reports have linked them with a swoop for former winger Gareth Bale, as well as an audacious move for Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland.

Ferdinand, however, was less than optimistic about Spurs' chances of signing either player.

"Bale to Spurs? That would be great for Spurs if they could get him, but I don't think they could afford him, that's the problem," he said.

"Haaland isn't going to Spurs. He's at Dortmund, why would he go to Spurs?"

Mourinho may not be keen on sending his star player to his former employers at Old Trafford, but he showed his selfless side on Monday amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter and Porto boss volunteered for charity Age UK and community group Love Your Doorstep, helping to pack and deliver parcels of food and essentials to elderly residents in north London.

Mobile struggles to get people to stop going to “packed out” parks - AL.com

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 09:20 PM PDT

Children's birthday parties pack playgrounds. Soccer games lure dozens to city parks. Fencing around outdoor basketball courts is ripped open to make an entry for pick-up games.

In Mobile, the site of still bustling parks has city officials worried at a time of strict social distancing to slow the coronavirus pandemic. On Tuesday, the Mobile council voted to do something about it by adopting a resolution prohibiting congregating.

While cities from Dallas to Atlanta have ordered all residents to stay inside unless it is absolutely necessary to go out, while Birmingham is debating do the exact same thing, Mobile is still trying to reason with residents.

Today's measure is more procedural and doesn't close any city parks. But the supportive council members said it sends a message that people need to "stay home" and take the pandemic seriously.

"If we don't come up with something, we'll be fighting this virus next year," said Mobile City Councilman Fred Richardson, the sponsor of the resolution, who was inspired to push for the resolution after driving by parks this past weekend and witnessing them "packed out."

"It's like the governor nor anyone else said anything," Richardson said, referring to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey's public health order on Thursday that prohibited gatherings of 25 or more people and backed the nationwide social distancing measures of people being separated by 6 feet or more.

'Reducing frequency'

The defiance in Mobile hasn't been mirrored in most Alabama cities where there have been more confirmations of the COVID-19 virus. As of Tuesday, the state has 217 confirmed coronavirus cases with Mobile County at just five. But testing has also been slower in Mobile, and cases have been soaring in other spots along the Gulf, from Florida to Louisiana.

In Birmingham the city is considering a "shelter in place" ordinance establishing a curfew until April 3. But city spokesman Rick Journey said he was unaware of any violations of social distancing guidelines in the city's public spaces. Birmingham is the largest city in Jefferson County, which leads the state in 90 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

In Huntsville, a city spokeswoman said officials are "really stressing social distancing and sanitation." Huntsville is Madison County's largest city where 21 people have been tested positive for coronavirus.

Elsewhere it's a mixed bag. In Decatur, the parks and tennis courts are open, but playgrounds and public restrooms are closed. Mayor Tab Bowling said residents are doing "an outstanding job" of following the state and federal guidelines.

In Muscle Shoals, tennis courts and golf courses are only open where the city can monitor the social distancing restrictions, according to Mayor David Bradford.

But some cities have had to address crowding at parks. Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said he recently signed an executive order enforcing a dawn-to-dusk curfew at public parks following problems with people ignoring social distancing. "Curfew has been a tremendous asset in reducing the frequency," Maddox said.

In Dothan, the city closed its playgrounds because the city saw a "heavy use" of them, according to City Manager Kevin Cowper. But he said that, overall, gatherings at public parks have not been much of a problem.

Closer to Mobile, the city of Fairhope recently closed its public pier on Sunday following images this weekend of large crowds walking along it. The council also closed several other parks, including the northern portion of its beach and a dog park. The city's South Beach Park remains open, but parks with playgrounds are closed.

The beaches are empty in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, following Ivey's order last week to close them. Signage instructing people to keep a safe social distance are being installed at parks and boat launches in Gulf Shores.

'Need to be at home'

None the cities reached indicated that they were adopting resolutions prohibiting congregating. The Mobile ordinance urges Mayor Sandy Stimpson to consider closing city properties where congregations are occurring with the exception of locations where people are gathered for COVID-19 testing, or "other activities necessary to fight" the outbreak.

"Every time I turn CNN on, the number of cases are going up," said Mobile City Council President Levon Manzie said. "The number of deaths are going up. Whether (the resolution) is symbolic and keeps someone from going out to our parks, then we've done our jobs. Right now, they need to be at home."

The two council members voting against the resolution were Councilmen John Williams and Joel Daves.

Williams said he believed that Ivey's order last week was effective enough, and that city action could be "confusing" to the public. He also said that the resolution doesn't instruct police to do "anymore than they can" or already have done.

"The governor has made it clear that it's against the law to congregate in (groups of) 25 or more or in any instance where the 6-foot distance cannot be maintained," he said. "I don't know how else to say it than that."

Daves said his opposition to Richardson's resolution wasn't an indication that he supported large gatherings on public property. But he said that the city's public safety division under Stimpson's purview has "all the authority" to break up large gatherings in violation of Ivey's orders.

"I just don't think that enacting this resolution makes it less likely that people will gather together in large groups," said Daves.

'Separating is key'

Mobile, and other areas of coastal Alabama, have been struggling with social distancing restrictions for the past two weeks. During the weekend of March 14-15, while social distancing warnings were sounded nationwide and organized events were being canceled, several local bars and restaurants continued with St. Patrick's Day weekend festivities, one of which included a large street party gathering. Images circulating on social media included one event where revelers stood next to homemade sign mocking coronavirus.

Last week, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and other areas explored unprecedented beach closure measures while spring break raged with large crowds along Alabama's beaches.

Mobile city officials said that last weekend, some of the park problems included broken padlocks and ripped up fencing surrounding outdoor basketball courts. Shonnda Smith, the city's senior director of parks and recreation, said Mobile officials are removing basketball rims to keep the crowds from gathering at the basketball courts.

But James Barber, the city's executive director of public safety, said the issues around Mobile haven't been "huge" and that police will be able to enforce a strict adherence to crowd size restrictions. He said he didn't see the need for the council's resolution.

"There have been some resistant people," said Barber, who said his department is working with city attorneys to determine what other measures they can use.

"We are trying to avoid incarcerations for non-violent minor offenses as well," he said. "We have what we need to break up gatherings of 25 or more."

Councilwoman Bess Rich said the measure was the least the council could do during a crisis that she fears could overwhelm the city's health care system.

"The point is that separating is really the key right now," said Rich. "It's the one known we can all participate in."

Actress Julia Garner Planned the Ideal New York City Hall Wedding - Vogue

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 08:46 PM PDT

While we're all currently taking a pledge to #stayhome, these weddings took place in the months before the coronavirus pandemic. We hope they'll bring some joy to your reading list.

Actress Julia Garner and musician Mark Foster's romance started at the Sundance Film Festival, just outside of the Eccles Theatre. "In our first conversation, we realized that my grandmother lived in the same small town that his dad lives in, just outside of Cleveland," Julia says. After that, they ended up seeing each other in Cleveland at Christmas time, year after year. "It kind of became a tradition."

Once they officially started dating, they were together for about 10 months before Mark proposed. "Both of us had a few weeks of quiet before I had to leave for Atlanta to start shooting season three of Ozark, so we rented an RV and took a road trip up to Montana to get away from the city and just be together," Julia says. One morning outside of Flathead Lake, Mark woke her up with a cup of coffee and took her on a walk by the water's edge. "He read me a poem he had written to me, and when he finished, he dropped to a knee and asked me to marry him." They then continued down to Yellowstone, where they camped under the stars. "It was surreal and beautiful," Julia remembers.

After the proposal, the two debated between a big wedding or a Vegas elopement. Ultimately, they met in the middle, deciding to get married at New York's City Hall—just like Julia's parents had 40 years before.

"I love pantsuits, and I always thought that if I were to get married in a courthouse, I wanted to wear one," Julia says. "I wanted a Carrie Bradshaw moment. But of course for the party, I wanted something more soft and feminine." This meant two looks by Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund runner-up Danielle Frankel.

In the lead up to her wedding, the actress found herself right in the middle of production, without a moment to go dress shopping. "I started freaking out because I was getting married in 10 days and had nothing to wear," she says. "When I was on a lunch break in my trailer, I went on Instagram, and I got a DM from Danielle Frankel asking me if I had found a dress. I wrote her back, and we exchanged numbers. The next day we spoke on the phone, and I felt like I'd known her forever. It was an Instagram miracle!"

Funnily enough, the dress the bride chose was called the "Julia dress." "I'd been a fan of Danielle's for a while . . . even before we started planning for the wedding," Julia explains. "I first heard about her when she was nominated for the Fashion Fund Award. After that, I started following her on Instagram. Her pieces have everything I love. They're beautiful, modern, smart, classic, edgy, original, flattering, and powerful."

The wedding was intimate, with only the couples' immediate family as witnesses. They didn't work with a wedding planner; instead Julia, Mark, and the bride's mother Tamar did the organizing, and friends helped where they could. Close friend Francesco Civetta (aka DJ Cash) flew out from L.A. to do the music; photographer Andy Barron came up from Nashville to shoot the wedding; and Ron Ben-Israel made the cake.

The next day, they had a dinner with extended family and close friends at Locanda Verde in Tribeca to celebrate. After that, they loaded their guests into a bus and took everyone to the Public Hotel, where they cut the cake and danced for the rest of the night.

The newlyweds' first dance was to "Lovers in a Stream." "It was a surprise," Julia says. "Mark wrote, produced, and sang it. It was very surreal, and the most beautiful present I've ever received. It felt like I was floating up in the air—it was the most magical moment I've ever had. The only people who heard this song were at the wedding, but it will come out soon. It's a beautiful love song, and I'm excited for the world to hear it."

Doctors tell the story behind their viral rendition of John Lennon's 'Imagine': 'Music goes places that medicine can't go' - ABC News

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 08:33 PM PDT

Both doctors believe music is a powerful form of medicine.

Two doctors whose stirring rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" is going viral say they hope it brings people some comfort in this time of uncertainty.

Drs. Elvis L. Francois and William Robinson are chief residents in the orthopedic department of the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and they've both recorded simple songs over the years in which Francois would sing and Robinson would play the piano. Each of them posted their rendition of "Imagine" to Instagram on Monday.

"We decided to post it as the quarantine had kinda hit its stride and people were inside and … scared and, if nothing else, stir crazy -- looking for some hope and comfort," Robinson told ABC News.

The doctors said that the message of the song, which was originally released by Lennon in 1971 during the Vietnam War, still applies to the crisis today.

"There are so many things in the world that divide us and that particular song is a song that is meant to bring people together," Francois told ABC News.

"The song [is about] hope and having the world coming together as one. In order to beat this thing and self-isolate and quarantine … it's going to take everybody. And so, the message of that song kind of hit home," Robinson said.

Both doctors believe music is a powerful form of medicine.

"It kinda brings about a certain level of healing that's hard to do with any sort of pill or surgery or anything like that," Robinson said.

"Music goes places that medicine can't go," Francois added. "You can perform the perfect surgery but that next day, when a patient's going through rehabilitation or they're faced with a difficult diagnosis, music is something that speaks to the spirit… In many way[s], music heals people in ways that medicine can't heal them."

The two said they're grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response their video has received.

"It's such a small thing. If something this small can provide people comfort or hope in any capacity … it's such a humbling experience for both of us," Robinson said.

Francois and Robinson are both fifth-year residents with only three months left to finish their program.

Robinson is now at home with "limited clinic obligations," he said. Francois is preparing to work a 28-hour call shift Wednesday to address any trauma cases that come into the hospital.

Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez reveal details of their relationship in viral challenge - Fox News

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 06:33 PM PDT

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are keeping busy while quarantining.

The couple recently participated in a viral game known as the "couples challenge," which featured the duo being asked questions about themselves with their eyes closed and answering by only pointing at either themselves or their partner.

In the video, shared to the 44-year-old former baseball pro's Instagram, he and Lopez, 50, cuddle up on an outdoor couch while someone off-camera asks them questions.

JENNIFER LOPEZ PAYS TRIBUTE TO 'SELENA' ON BIOPIC'S 23RD ANNIVERSARY: 'I WAS SO LUCKY'

In the game, the pair agreed that JLo is the better cook, that she spends the most money, is the most stubborn, takes longer to get ready in the morning and initiated the couple's first kiss.

They also agreed that Rodriguez is the more social of the two and that he was the first to say "I love you."

The two disagreed on several things, however.

Lopez and Rodriguez both said the other was funnier, messier, a bigger baby when sick and grumpier in the morning.

JENNIFER LOPEZ'S EX-BOYFRIEND OF 10 YEARS DAVID CRUZ DEAD AT 51

Both Rodriguez and Lopez claimed themselves to be the first to apologize after a fight, to have the most patience and to be the most romantic -- before Lopez suggested it could be a toss-up.

"Family feud," Rodriguez captioned the post. "Caption this..."

This isn't the first time that the couple has participated in a viral challenge, having recently made headlines for joining in on the "Flip the Switch" challenge, in which they swapped outfits.

The "Hustlers" star appears in the video posing in front of a mirror while doing a sultry dance. She's sporting a formfitting backless white belted dress with long sleeves. She dances next to the former MLB star, who stands somewhat expressionless while recording in a navy blue blazer, khaki pants, a white shirt and sunglasses.

Per the challenge, when Drake drops the lyric, "I just flipped the switch," the video does a jump cut and the duo switch places and clothes. Suddenly, Rodriguez is the one doing the sultry dance dressed in his soon-to-be wife's white dress. Despite being significantly taller than Lopez, the dress fits surprisingly well. Meanwhile, JLo becomes the one recording wearing her husband's getup, which looks noticeably big on her.

The video abruptly ends once Rodriguez starts to show hints of laughter.

Hanoi (VNA) – As COVID-19 concerns are growing, many countries in Asia have made stronger actions in efforts to contain the pandemic.

On March 23, Indonesia's Jakarta capital closed cinemas and other entertainment venues to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

A spokesperson of the Indonesian National Police noted this country also deployed 465,000 police officers nationwide to disperse any public gatherings "for the sake of public safety".

Meanwhile, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said doctors and other medical staff would receive bonuses ranging from 5 million rupiah to 15 million rupiah (300 – 900 USD) per month in regions that have declared an emergency.

In Myanmar, local media reported that its Ministry for Health and Sports has urged the country's migrant workers returning from Thailand to self-quarantine as it doesn't have sufficient infrastructure to quarantine a large number of people at the same time.

Union Minister for Health and Sports Myint Htwe advised them to stay at home for 14 days to prevent spread of the viral disease among their communities and to report respective healthcare centres every day during this period.

In Malaysia, this country will consider extending its movement control order (MCO), which is set to expire on March 31.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the National Security Council will make consideration according to effects of the MCO, which began on March 18.

He cited police as reporting that nearly 90 percent of the population have complied with the MCO, hoping this rate will reach 100 percent.

According to him, the Malaysian Government decided to add 600 million ringgits to purchase medical equipment and materials and recruit more healthcare workers to cope with COVID-19.

On March 23, Malaysia recorded 212 COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total to 1,518. This is the highest number of new cases recorded in a day. The pandemic has so far killed 14 people in Malaysia./.

How the viral app Houseparty is entertaining a generation in lockdown | Free to read - Financial Times

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 05:33 PM PDT

This weekend, as much of the world retreated into coronavirus lockdown, it looked as though many people's favourite activities were going to disappear with them: evening drinks, birthday parties, casual dinners with friends.

But then came the viral video chat app Houseparty.

"I've been to three or four different parties in one night," said Andrew, a 30-year-old advertising executive, of the app, which allows users to congregate spontaneously with their friends via video hangout to carry out their usual social activities — just virtually.

As millions of people have been told to stay at home in an unprecedented bid to curb the spread of the virus, Houseparty has become an overnight sensation — not only among company-starved millennials and Generation Z teenagers — but also their parents.

Last week alone, the San Francisco-based app, which is owned by Fortnite developer Epic Games, raked in 2m downloads worldwide, compared with around 130,000 the same week a month ago, according to data from App Annie. It currently ranks at number one in the Apple app store in 17 countries including the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.

"[Houseparty's popularity] seems to have followed coronavirus around the globe," said 26-year-old copywriter Miranda di Carcaci, who noticed a couple of weeks ago that many of her friends in Italy were sharing screenshots on social media of themselves socialising via a video chat app, with groups laughing and sipping glasses of wine from behind their phones.

Houseparty allows up to eight people in any one group conversation

Considered the more casual and kitsch alternative to rapidly growing video conferencing apps such as Zoom or Google Hangouts, Houseparty has already prompted a new set of social rituals. This weekend, many under lockdown enjoyed dinners and drinks — dubbed "AperiTV" by some — together over the app, while teams at Silicon Valley companies used it to hold "virtual happy hours".

"Houseparty has a big base around teenagers and always has," said Ben Rubin, Houseparty's co-founder, who left the company shortly before its acquisition to work as an entrepreneur-in-residence at venture capital firm Benchmark. "[But] with everything that's going on, a bunch of adults now have the time and need for new connections."

Launched in September 2016, Houseparty has focused on enabling what it calls "shared experiences", offering in-app games such as trivia or screen-sharing services that allow friends to go on dating apps or watch TV programmes together, for example. Users spend an hour on average in the app.

In particular, many are attracted by the spontaneity the format enables: in an effort to mimic an actual house party, where you might find friends chatting in different rooms, the app notifies users when their friends go into the app and shows who is talking to whom, with up to eight people permitted in any one group conversation.

Users can also enter friends' conversations without their permission, unless they have specifically chosen to "lock" their room.

The 50-strong company has cast itself as a socially-responsible alternative to larger social media group Facebook, swearing never to monetise through user data and advertising.

Percentage growth in downloads between the weeks beginning March 2 and March 9

This goal was made easier in June last year, when it was acquired by Epic Games, the maker of free "battle royale" game Fortnite, for an undisclosed amount. For now, its deeper-pocketed owner appears to be bankrolling the app: Houseparty announced earlier this month that its gaming add-ons, its main source of revenue, would be free.

Instead, analysts expect Epic to integrate the app more closely with Fortnite and Unreal Engine, the platform it has created for other game developers to build upon, as the online gaming industry increasingly incorporates communication features typically found on social media platforms.

"Epic is using its burgeoning M&A war chest to acquire services and tools that will help sustain Fortnite's role as a social platform, and the Houseparty acquisition fits into that strategy," said Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games research at Ampere Analysis.

"Epic has already integrated part of Houseparty's technology and feature set into the Fortnite experience, but the company probably sees value in scaling the standalone app to broaden its audience outside of the Fortnite experience," he added.

One person familiar with the company said that Epic was in a strong position to scale the app amid the spike in interest. Still, Houseparty has struggled with some outages, and had to cull several extra features during the surge.

In the longer term, Houseparty, like the other video chat apps, will battle to prove that they are not a pandemic-induced fad but part of a lasting shift in how we communicate.

For now, though, it is offering light relief to millions. "Literally the world and his wife have signed up!" said Ms di Carcaci.

Nurse's coronavirus 'decontamination routine' video goes viral - New York Post

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 05:33 PM PDT

A viral video shows the "decontamination routine" of an intensive-care nurse battling the coronavirus — demonstrating the meticulous steps health care workers are taking to stop the the virus spreading.

The Ohio nurse behind the TikTok account @jess_o_saurus filmed herself returning home after a suspected COVID-19 case in her unit.

In her garage, before entering her home, she strips down to "get naked (mostly)," disinfects her phone and keys, and soaks her shoes in bleach overnight, she notes.

"In case anyone was wondering how seriously we ICU nurses are taking this: here is my routine," said the nurse — who identified herself only as "Jess" to Yahoo Lifestyle, — in the caption of the video.

The clip has racked up more than two million views since its posting Thursday —  and it only captured just a small part of the routine, Jess said.

"I sit on a bath towel, place a bath towel on the floor for my shoes, and upon getting out of my car remove both bath towels and then wipe down the surfaces with a sanitizing spray," she told Yahoo.

"I also wipe down my steering wheel, cup holders, door handles and anything else I may have come in contact with."

Jess told Yahoo she made the video to illustrate the careful steps nurses and other hospital workers are taking to make sure they aren't spreading the virus.

"I just wanted the general public to understand that though we are on the front lines of this pandemic, we are not in any way careless in our efforts to prevent the spread. We are all taking the restrictions put upon us very seriously [and] are monitoring our own symptoms on a daily basis," she said.

"Aside from going to work, getting food or putting gas in our cars, we are adhering firmly to the stay-home mandate."

Fauci says Trump's Easter goal for lifting coronavirus restrictions should be 'flexible' | TheHill - The Hill

Posted: 24 Mar 2020 05:31 PM PDT

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday said President TrumpDonald John TrumpMnuchin, Schumer brief Trump, expect coronavirus stimulus deal Tuesday US airlines drafting plans for potential shutdown: report White House hits CNN, MSNBC for cutting away from coronavirus briefing MORE's stated timeline for the lifting of restrictions on parts of the country by Easter Sunday should be "flexible."

Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a prominent member of the White House's coronavirus task force, added it is important for public health officials to gauge how widespread coronavirus is in parts of the country that haven't reported significant numbers of cases.

"That's really very flexible," Fauci told reporters at the White House when asked about the president's timeline, which Trump floated earlier Tuesday during a Fox News virtual town hall on the coronavirus pandemic.

"You can look at a date but you've got to be very flexible and on a literally day-by-day and week-by-week basis. You need to evaluate the feasibility of what you're trying to do," Fauci said.

Fauci suggested regions with fewer cases may be able to ease guidelines urging people to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people and stay away from bars and restaurants before harder-hit areas. But he cautioned officials don't have enough data to determine where those regions are.

Aggressive testing and subsequent isolation of individuals who are found to have the coronavirus can help keep the disease from spreading to parts of the country that have yet to see an outbreak, Fauci said.

He acknowledged lifting restrictions does not make sense in an area like New York City, which has emerged as the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S. with hundreds of new cases each day. The New York metro area currently accounts for 60 percent of new COVID-19 cases domestically.

"You may not want to essentially treat it as just one force for the entire country, but look at flexibility in different areas," Fauci said. "So I think people might get the misinterpretation you're just going to lift everything up. … That's not going to happen. It's going to be looking at the data. And what we don't have right now that we really do need, is we need to know what's going on in those areas of the country where there isn't an obvious outbreak."

At the briefing Tuesday evening, Trump continued to push Easter as a possible date parts of the country could reopen in order to help stimulate the U.S. economy. The president insisted that "every decision we make is grounded solely in the health, safety and wellbeing of our citizens" and said he would listen to advice from health officials like Fauci, Dr. Deborah Birx and other advisers when making a decision.

"I think that would be a great thing for our country and we're all working very hard to make that a reality. We'll be meeting with a lot of people to see if it can be done," Trump said.

Trump has prompted criticism from some public health experts for setting an arbitrary deadline for when the White House could lift federal recommendations on social distancing meant to mitigate the spread of the virus domestically.

He has spoken optimistically about the prospect of returning the country to normal as cases spike significantly in the New York metro area, challenging the state's health system and prompting federal officials to warn Tuesday that those who have left New York must self-quarantine for 14 days

The president argued that his administration could relax restrictions in areas of the United States that have not been significantly impacted by the virus, citing the farm belt and Texas as an example on Tuesday.

"We can have large sections of the country open up," Trump said.

Trump said he arrived at the timeline in part because he thought it would be "beautiful" to have the country opened up by Easter.

"I just thought it was a beautiful time," Trump said. "It was based on a certain level of weeks from the time we started."

Public health experts and some Republican lawmakers have been uneasy about the idea of rushing to boost a lagging economy before the virus is fully contained. They have warned of potentially catastrophic consequences, including a spike in infections and deaths that could lead to overrun hospitals, and argued the health of the nation should be the priority.

Tuesday marked Fauci's first appearance in the briefing room alongside Trump since Friday. His absence prompted speculation about whether the president had grown unhappy with Fauci's willingness to correct Trump when he offered inaccurate statements about potential therapy drugs, vaccine timelines and other issues.

Both men have denied there is any rift. Fauci in an interview with WMAL earlier Tuesday suggested the media was pitting the two against each other, while Trump described the doctor as "extraordinary" during a Fox News virtual town hall.

The subscribers are required to redeem the offer by May 1, post which they will be charged $11.99/month if they wish to continue the service. In addition, the telecom behemoth is also giving a free 4-week online course from Shaw Academy, which is an online education organization based in Dublin, Ireland.

The Bellevue, WA-based wireless carrier also revealed a new prepaid plan — T-Mobile Connect — that has been designed to benefit low-income Americans who cannot afford wireless communications services. Notably, the plan will be available nationwide post its merger completion with Sprint Corporation S. The inexpensive data plan is equipped with numerous benefits, like a $15/month and $25/month plan, which include unlimited talk and text services with 2GB and 5GB of data, respectively. It also includes an offering called Annual Data Upgrade that will give an additional 500MB of monthly data, at no additional cost, for the next five years. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, these perks are likely to benefit T-Mobile users in the near term without compromising on the entertainment quotient.

T-Mobile has also been taking significant steps as the nation continues to deal with the adverse economic impact of the virus outbreak. Markedly, the Deutsche Telekom AG DTEGY-backed company, which is in the process of completing its merger with Sprint, has secured the Federal Communications Commission's ("FCC") Special Temporary Authority to use additional spectrum in the 600 MHz Band to meet increased customer demand for broadband during this period of adversity. The FCC is essentially helping Americans to work from home, learn at home and connect remotely to health care professionals during this hour of crisis.

In addition to removing smartphone data caps for all customers with free calling services to severely impacted countries, T-Mobile plans to address accretive broadband requirements with Network Operations Centers that operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week to monitor network traffic. This includes calls to 911 and a technician workforce that can quickly respond to any issues. With seamless roaming access, T-Mobile has also taken necessary steps to ensure that schools and families connected to Sprint's network have access to its expanded coverage. As a result, the FCC-backed temporary authority will help T-Mobile to better serve customers who are making adjustments to their daily lives by practicing social distancing, thereby controlling the rapid spread of COVID-19.

T-Mobile has a long-term earnings growth expectation of 18.1%. The company topped earnings estimates in the trailing four quarters, the beat being 19.5%, on average. Shares of T-Mobile have gained 4.7% against the industry's decline of 12.4% in the past year.

The company currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
