EU Flags Concern Over Faulty China Coronavirus Gear, State Media Responds - Newsweek Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:41 AM PDT Chinese state media has gone on the offensive against suggestions that medical supplies sent from the country to European states to help them battle coronavirus was faulty or otherwise inadequate. Countries including the Netherlands, Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey have all reported in recent weeks that supplies from China—such as protective masks and testing kits—were not fit for purpose. The rejection of such gear has stirred up animosity, with Chinese state media stubbornly defending Beijing, blaming sinophobia and insecurity for the behavior of Western nations. The Chinese city of Wuhan was home to the initial outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus, which has since spread across the world infecting more than 800,000 people and killing over 38,000. Some 172,000 people are so far known to have recovered. Though it bungled—and hid—the initial outbreak, China imposed tight restrictions that appear to have stemmed the spread of the virus within the country, though President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are among those who have cast doubt on reports from China. Beijing is now pivoting to assist worse-hit nations, while attempting to dodge blame for the crisis and avert a second wave of infections. Chinese medical supplies and professionals have been flown to Europe to help the continent, which along with the U.S. has become a new center of the outbreak. But for all the goodwill, some officials have complained that they cannot use what they have received. Global Times—a regime backed newspaper that often follows the most nationalistic attitudes within the Chinese Communist Party—described assisting Western nations as "a hard but thankless job." Though it admitted it was "theoretically" possible that some of the equipment was not up to scratch, the editorial also claimed all Chinese products are "undoubtedly reliable." Regardless, Global Times said Western nations should not "exaggerate" the problem, warning, "If public opinion in relevant countries makes a big deal of the quality disputes, this could easily be seen as deliberate provocation by the Chinese public." This weekend, the Dutch health ministry said it had recalled 600,000 face masks that arrived from a Chinese manufacturer earlier this month. Some of the masks did not fit and their filters were faulty, the ministry said, noting they had already been given to frontline health workers. Spain said 60,000 coronavirus test kits produced by a Chinese manufacturer were unable to determine if patients were infected while Turkey had similar complaints about a portion of the tests it had ordered. European Union Foreign Affairs Minister Josep Borrell warned against the "geo-political component" or the "politics of generosity." He added that China is pushing the message that it is a "responsible and reliable partner," though urged Europeans to "defend Europe against its detractors" while "armed with facts." Another Global Times editorial published Monday and carried by the People's Daily online—the official newspaper of the CCP—suggested Chinese foreign assistance had "touched a raw nerve" in the West. "Some in the West are once again politicizing the assistance China provided, making it another weapon to slander China," the author claimed. It dismissed allegations of faulty gear as "nonsense" and said such reports stem from a "deep sense of anxiety" among Beijing's critics. "Through the virus battle, the superiority of China's domestic governance has been fully displayed, and through China's timely assistance to others, the country's international influence has been greatly enhanced," the article claimed. China has been accused of a slow initial response to the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, plus of silencing medical workers who tried to alert the world to the problem. Chinese media and officials have also spread disinformation about the virus, for example suggesting without evidence that it was caused by the U.S. Army. The CCP has railed against Trump and his senior allies for describing the sickness as the "China Virus" or the "Wuhan Virus," claiming that the White House is seeking to embolden racists and nationalists in the U.S. while deflecting blame for what has become the world's worst outbreak. The Trump administration has refused to take world leadership on the coronavirus issue, grappling with domestic controversies rather than coordinating a unified approach. The CCP will be eyeing the power vacuum, not least as a way to take the focus off of its own early failings. Jacques deLisle, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and an expert in Chinese law and politics, told Newsweek that the coronavirus pandemic is a crisis-turned-opportunity for Beijing, though noted that fractious diplomacy and equipment failings show the country is not yet "ready for the prime time" of global leadership. China's situation has, however, allowed the CCP to demonstrate the strengths of its system—the authoritarian ability to shut things down and redeploy resources—while the U.S. is "running behind every other developed country in terms of the adequacy and promptness of its response," deLisle said. "The U.S. failure of competence allows China to look very competent and to not take the heat it deserves," deLisle added, whether over coronavirus or other authoritarian behavior. China to begin reporting asymptomatic coronavirus cases in its daily tally - CNN Posted: 01 Apr 2020 12:41 AM PDT The move during growing public concern over asymptomatic cases, of which 1,541 were under medical observation in China by the end of Monday, according to the National Health Commission (NHC). This includes including 205 cases imported from overseas. Officials will further tighten screening and quarantine rules targeting asymptomatic cases -- defined as people who have tested positive for the virus without displaying any symptoms -- said Chang Jile, a senior official with the NHC, at a press conference in Wuhan. Until now, asymptomatic cases have not been counted as confirmed cases under Chinese government guidelines. Asymptomatic cases and their close contacts will be isolated for 14 days immediately upon discovery. Their quarantine will only be lifted after they twice test negative for coronavirus in tests administered 24 hours apart. If they develop symptoms during isolation, they will become confirmed cases and undergo treatment at designated hospitals. On Monday, a task force on the virus chaired by Premier Li Keqiang, the country's deputy leader, urged "placing priority on asymptomatic cases, from detection, contact tracing, to isolation and treatment, in order to lock in previous gains and plug potential loopholes in the containment," according to a government statement. A woman in Henan province in central China was infected with the deadly virus last week after encountering a friend, a local doctor who was later identified as an asymptomatic case. As the Chinese government prepares to lift lockdown measures at the original epicenter of the pandemic, the Henan story has stirred intense interest and anxiety over how infectious asymptomatic carriers are, and whether the authorities have been transparent enough in reporting such cases. Coronavirus Live Updates: Trump Warns of ‘Painful Two Weeks’ Ahead - The New York Times Posted: 31 Mar 2020 10:41 PM PDT Here's what you need to know:
President Trump strikes a somber note as he warns of a "painful two weeks" ahead.President Trump said at his daily White House coronavirus briefing that "this is going to be a very painful, very very painful two weeks," but that Americans will soon "start seeing some real light at the end of the tunnel." "I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead. We're going through a very tough few weeks," Mr. Trump said, later raising his two weeks to three. Striking perhaps his most somber tone on the subject to date, Mr. Trump said the virus is a "great national trial unlike any we have ever faced before," and said it would require the "full absolute measure of our collective strength, love and devotion" in order to minimize the number of people infected. "It's a matter of life and death, frankly," he said, officially calling for another month of social distancing and offering a sober assessment of the pandemic's impact in the United States. "It's a matter of life and death." Dr. Deborah L. Birx, the White House's coronavirus response coordinator, urged Americans to follow the guidelines: no groups larger than 10 people, no unnecessary travel, no going to restaurants or bars. "There's no magic bullet, there's no magic vaccine," she said. "It's just behaviors." Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that social distancing measures across the nation are slowing the spread of the virus, but he made clear that the national death toll will continue to rise. "The 15 days that we've had of mitigation clearly are having an effect," Dr. Fauci said. But, he added: "In the next several days to a week or so we are going to continue to see things go up." Mr. Trump, who spent weeks downplaying the threat of the virus — and who has retreated from his recent suggestion that social distancing could be scaled back in mid-April — congratulated himself for projections showing that public health measures may dramatically limit the national death toll. "What would have happened if we did nothing? Because there was a group that said, 'Let's just ride it out,'" Mr. Trump said, without saying what "group" he was referring to. Mr. Trump said that as many as 2.2 million people "would have died if we did nothing, if we just carried on with our life." "You would have seen people dying on airplanes, you would have seen people dying in hotel lobbies — you would have seen death all over," Mr. Trump said. By comparison, he said, a potential death toll of 100,000 "is a very low number." Asked how current casualty estimates might differ had Mr. Trump called for social distancing measures weeks earlier than he did, in mid-March, almost two months after the first confirmed case of coronavirus in the United States, Mr. Trump insisted that he had acted decisively. "I think we've done a great job," Mr. Trump said. Asked about his repeated assurances to Americans in recent weeks that the virus would peter out with minimal impact, Mr. Trump insisted, as he has before, that he was trying to reassure the nation. "I want to be positive; I don't want to be negative," Mr. Trump said. "I want to give people in this country hope. "We're going through probably the worst thing the country's ever seen," he added. "We lose more here potentially than you lose in world wars as a country. Virus models in U.S. paint a grim picture. The top government scientists battling the coronavirus estimated Tuesday that the deadly pathogen could kill between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans, in spite of the social distancing measures that have closed schools, banned large gatherings, limited travel and forced people to stay in their homes. Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, and Dr. Deborah L. Birx, who is coordinating the coronavirus response, displayed that grim projection at the White House on Tuesday, calling it "our real number" but pledging to do everything possible to reduce those numbers even further. The conclusions generally match those from similar models by public health researchers around the globe. As dire as those predictions are, Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx said the number of deaths could be much higher if Americans do not follow the strict guidelines to keep the virus from spreading, and they urged people to take the restrictions seriously. President Trump, who on Sunday extended for 30 days the government's recommendations for slowing the spread of the virus, made it clear that the data compiled by Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx convinced him that the death toll would be even higher if the restrictions on work, school, travel and social life were not taken seriously by all Americans. The data released on Tuesday was the first time that Mr. Trump's administration has officially estimated the breadth of the threat to human life from the coronavirus, and the disease it brings, known as Covid-19. In the past several weeks, Dr. Birx and Dr. Fauci have resisted predicting how many people might die in the pandemic, saying that there was not enough reliable data. That is no longer, the case, they said. As of Tuesday afternoon, at least 173,741 people across every state, plus Washington, D.C., and four U.S. territories, have tested positive for the virus, according to a New York Times database. At least 3,433 patients with the virus have died. 'We are in a cage': Spanish town lives under a lockdown within a lockdown. When María José Rodríguez heard on local television that her town in northeastern Spain would be locked down within hours, she knew she had to leave or risk losing her family's business. She grabbed a bag of groceries, a fresh change of clothes and her car keys, said goodbye to her husband and drove to her son's apartment in a nearby village, above the family bakery. For more than two weeks, she has been locked out of the town, Igualada. Her husband has been locked in, and they have no way of knowing how long it will go on. "Had I not moved out to keep running the bakery, we would have had to close it," Ms. Rodríguez, 63, said at her shop in the village of La Pobla de Claramunt. "But we'll be fine, and I call my husband 50 times a day. At the very least." Many European countries have imposed various forms of lockdowns to contain the epidemic, but Igualada, an industrial town 30 miles northwest of Barcelona, stands out. Even as Spain has imposed a nationwide lockdown, it has cut Igualada off from the rest of the country — a lockdown within a lockdown. After its hospital was identified as a hub of a regional outbreak that has reached nearly 20,000 coronavirus infections and more than 2,500 deaths, officials sealed off Igualada and three smaller neighboring towns at midnight on March 12, stranding about 65,000 people. Police forces guard every access point, allowing only essential workers to enter and leave. The barriers have divided families like Ms. Rodríguez's, put people out of work and thrown households into uncertainty for weeks, if not more. "We are in a cage, and we are learning how to stop trying to control everything," said Gemma Sabaté, a 48-year-old physical therapist stranded there. Covid-19 is changing how the world does science. While political leaders have locked their borders, scientists have been shattering theirs, creating a global collaboration unlike any in history. Never before, researchers say, have so many experts in so many countries focused simultaneously on a single topic and with such urgency. Nearly all research, other than anything related to coronavirus, has ground to a halt. Normal imperatives like academic credit have been set aside. Online repositories make studies available months ahead of journals. Researchers have identified and shared hundreds of viral genome sequences. More than 200 clinical trials have been started, bringing together hospitals and laboratories around the globe. On a recent morning, for example, scientists at the University of Pittsburgh discovered that a ferret exposed to Covid-19 particles had developed a high fever — a potential advance toward animal vaccine testing. Under ordinary circumstances, they would have started work on an academic journal article. "But you know what? There is going to be plenty of time to get papers published," said Paul Duprex, a virologist leading the university's vaccine research. Within two hours, he said, he had shared the findings with scientists around the world on a World Health Organization conference call. "It is pretty cool, right? You cut the crap, for lack of a better word, and you get to be part of a global enterprise." Dr. Duprex's lab in Pittsburgh is collaborating with the Pasteur Institute in Paris and the Austrian drug company Themis Bioscience. The consortium has received funding from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation, a Norway-based organization financed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a group of governments, and is in talks with the Serum Institute of India, one of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world. Companies are racing to tap credit and raise cash. The clamor for corporate funding is raising concerns about a financial reckoning reminiscent of 2008. In a single week in March, as financial markets convulsed and major parts of the economy began shutting down, banks made over $240 billion in new loans to companies — twice as much in new lending as they would ordinarily extend in a full year. American companies are reeling from the body blow dealt by the pandemic. As revenues dwindle, travel slows and production lines halt, companies have begun to furlough or lay off employees, slash investment in operations and buy less from their suppliers. With no way to tell when the economy will restart, they are racing to conserve money and tap as much credit as possible. The new reality, say bankers and analysts, will be tough for companies that had grown accustomed to the easy money of the past decade. Enticed by ultralow interest rates, they borrowed trillions of dollars in new debt in the belief that banks would keep lending and the debt markets would always be open. Now many indebted companies, even those whose business has not taken a direct hit from the outbreak, are finding that they have to adapt to an era in which cash is suddenly much harder to raise. When basic errands feel fraught, we're here to help.Laundry, grocery shopping, even walking the dog is fraught with challenges these days. The key to accomplish any essential task is a little preparation, levelheaded thinking and a lot of hand washing before and after. (A few anti-bacterial wipes can't hurt either.) Trump's alarming message portends tragic days ahead - CNN Posted: 31 Mar 2020 08:11 PM PDT Even with blanket nationwide adoption of stringent mitigation efforts, between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans could face death in the coming weeks in a cascading nationwide ordeal, according to modeling explained by senior members of the President's emergency task force Tuesday. It is in the nature of the presidency, that the commander-in-chief sometimes has to deliver grave news to the nation. George W. Bush had to narrate the horror of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Ronald Reagan movingly eulogized shuttle astronauts after a 1986 disaster. And John Kennedy kept his nerve to address the nation during a showdown with the Soviet Union over Cuba that threatened to erupt in nuclear war. But no president for many decades has had to level with his country over such a sudden impending loss of American life in a medical emergency as Trump is now being forced to do -- after apparently coming to terms about the extent of the crisis himself. It was not the first time that administration experts modeled the staggering possible death toll. But the combination of the President's unusually serious demeanor and the ominous curve charts of his top public health officials struck a note of alarm missing from Trump's previous knockabout briefings. The stark spectacle of a president, especially one who spent weeks dismissing the virus, warning of the imminent demise of so many Americans encapsulated the scale of the crisis. "I want every American to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead. We're going to go through a very tough two weeks," the President said in the White House briefing room. Trump's briefing mostly lacked the elements of self-congratulation and false hope that have characterized his heavily criticized leadership in the crisis. To begin with, during his marathon two-hour briefing, he mostly ceded the stage to his credible lieutenants Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx, who convinced him of the seriousness of the situation over the weekend. There have been many false dawns when Trump has failed to match the gravity of a moment during his tenure. Past behavior suggests he may struggle to maintain his unifying tone at a moment of unique national peril. And the harrowing potential scale of the looming tragedy already have some, like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying lives might have been saved had Trump not spent weeks denying the severity of the approaching pandemic and adopted more aggressive actions to prepare. A multi-front battle intensifiesTrump's appearance came on a day of grave developments that underscored the multi-front nature of the fight against Covid-19. Field hospitals sprang up in New York's Central Park to alleviate overcrowding in the city's hospitals. State governors pleaded with the federal government for more ventilators, and doctors prepared to make grim decisions about who will live and die amid a shortage of the machines. Fauci and Birx arrived armed with slides showing the rocketing rise of Covid-19 cases in New York and New Jersey in recent weeks, and more shallow curves for other states. Their most hopeful moments involved referring to Italy's belated turn to a downward curve in infections after weeks of agony, reflecting the wrenching substance of their message. But in order to keep deaths to the lower end of their estimates, they warned that maximum mitigation efforts -- including physical distancing and staying at home -- were imperative. Even with such a regime in place across the country -- and some states and cities are not yet taking the advice seriously -- there are likely to be between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths. Fauci vowed, however, not to accept those figures and to strive to keep the mortality curve below expectations. He said there were some early signs that mitigation efforts taken by states and the White House's distancing guidelines, which have been extended until April 30, are working. "Whenever you're having an effect, it's not time to take your foot off the accelerator," Fauci said. "And that's what I hope. And I know that we can that do over the next 30 days." Birx called on the entire nation to unite, and, in a comment that appeared to jar with Trump's earlier rhetoric on the crisis, added: "There's no magic vaccine or therapy. It's just behaviors." "Each of our behaviors translating into something that changes the course of this viral pandemic over the next 30 days," Birx said. A grave moment in historyAs Tuesday's briefing wore on, the President indulged in his familiar misinformation and political shape-shifting that underscored his own erratic leadership and dishonesty. Empathizing with the pain in New York and New Jersey, the President who a month ago predicted a "miracle" that would make the virus go away bemoaned that "they got off to a very late start." New York's Gov. Andrew Cuomo has repeatedly criticized Trump for not invoking the full power of the Defense Production Act to supercharge the production of ventilators and other vital gear. Less than a month ago, the President, resisting calls to shut down the economy and take the pandemic sufficiently seriously, equated coronavirus to the common flu. "So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!" Trump wrote in a tweet. But now, with the number of cases of the virus in the United States racing towards 200,000 on Tuesday and 4,000 deaths, Trump admitted the two are not the same. The President invoked an unnamed friend who he said was in a coma because of the disease. "It's not the flu. It's vicious," Trump said. Later in the marathon briefing -- which became more an attempt to flood the zone for political gain the longer it went on -- Trump claimed of the virus, "It just reared up and came from nowhere." The White House in fact had weeks of notice once the disease emerged in China. As is often the case, the President's off-the-cuff style raised questions about his tone when he ditched his prepared remarks. And Trump also portrayed himself as a lone force resisting calls to "ride it out," warning such an approach could cost more than 2 million American lives. The President appeared to be setting up a political construct to use in his reelection campaign under which he can claim to have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. CNN reported Tuesday that not all of the President's advisers backed extending the distancing guidelines. The decision to shut down the previously purring US economy has thrown millions of Americans out of work and choked off growth. The full scale of the devastation is expected to be revealed in jobs numbers later this week. Trump faces an agonizing dilemma, balancing a desire to slow the spread of the virus and the need to return people to work to alleviate the possibility of an economic depression. Health advisers argued a month's extension of the distancing guidelines was necessary. But given that many hotspots may not reach the peak of their pandemics for weeks, it seems unlikely the situation will have improved sufficiently to relax the guidelines in a month. Viral virus briefing: Where science meets all things Trump - The Associated Press Posted: 31 Mar 2020 07:06 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — For a few moments in the Rose Garden, the coronavirus pandemic is a bucking bronco with President Donald Trump on its back. His arm swings an invisible rope. He seems to be hanging on for dear life. "Ride it like a cowboy," he growls. "Just ride it. Ride that sucker right through." This rodeo riff came during the daily White House coronavirus task force briefing, where science meets all things Trump. It's where the teetotaling president serves a 5 o'clock cocktail of public-health policy, twisted facts, invented achievements, performance art, hectoring, cheerleading, erraticism, improvisation, self-praise, pet theories and a dash of eloquence. Shaken not stirred. Late in starting, finished when he feels like it. The self-styled "wartime president" is, at least, a showtime president. He's enjoying the high ratings of his briefings and boasting they're up there with "The Bachelor." Meantime on the streets of the country, people are recoiling in the wake of each passing stranger's exhalation. In jammed hospitals, patients are fighting for life. The death toll arcs upward. Still the show must go on. Trump is the animated star of his production. Dr. Anthony Fauci is the stoic straight man, a venerated infectious disease scientist whose facial expressions are closely watched as if he is one oddball Trump remark away from losing it. He doesn't. But he's very tired on four hours of sleep. Day after day, Trump free-associates, harangues reporters, assails critics and spreads misinformation on all aspects of the crisis, at times overshadowing the fact-based information that public health officials have come to deliver, in the moments when Trump steps aside to let them speak. It was here one day that Fauci broke ranks in Trump's presence to refute his claims about a drug treatment for COVID-19. On this bright Sunday, the briefing was moved to the resplendent garden from the clammy confines of the press briefing room, a long-ago indoor swimming pool that still feels like one. With social-distancing signs posted on the backs of chairs, it has taken on the character of a hazmat zone. It gives literal meaning to the pandemic's cliche that we're all in this together. Out in the garden, Trump shoos away gnats and begins in buoyant fashion. The news is going to turn dark but he will take his sweet time getting there. "Beautiful day in the Rose Garden," he tells the press corps. "Tremendous distance between chairs. Social distancing. You practice it very well. We appreciate it. That's great." Next up is word about a coming diagnostic test, almost instant, he says, and you don't have to get a swab shoved so far up your nose like he did when he submitted to a virus test a few weeks back. He's complained about it ever since. The new test is so easy that he said he just might get another one. Executives step up to say what their companies are doing about producing and shipping critical medical supplies. Praise for Trump's leadership is standard in their brief remarks. This is a president who wants a public display of appreciation and has said he may not call people back if he doesn't get that. Full Coverage: Virus Outbreak We hear some basics about the world: "Think of it: 151 countries. Somebody said to me today ... they didn't know that we had that many countries. A hundred and fifty-one countries. That's something." We hear a series of unverified statements: about an unidentified New York hospital he's been told is hoarding masks, an uncorroborated theory that the fatality rate in the U.S. is lower than in other countries, his conviction that the speedy new tests will be "a whole new ballgame." He trots out the rhetorical bronco, saying some aides wanted him to just hang on and ride it out until the crisis passed but he felt he should do more. Trump's doggedly positive spin, evident for several months, begins to fray when he announces a month-long extension of social distancing guidelines that were to expire Monday. "The better you do," he says of distancing, "the faster this whole nightmare will end." This whole nightmare. As the briefing slips into its second hour, it becomes apparent that Trump is conditioning Americans to expect far more deaths from COVID-19 than anyone would think from his history of minimizing the crisis. Gone is the talk about the virus maybe going away like magic in the warmth of spring. Fauci and other public-health authorities had told him 100,000 to 200,000 people could die in this country from the virus if not enough is done to mitigate the pandemic. The president then invokes a far grimmer number, 2.2 million, an estimated death toll if no steps were taken to fight the pandemic, and summons Dr. Deborah Birx of the task force to explain it. Why introduce an even starker scenario than the already scary one? Because if 100,000 to 200,000 end up dying, Trump still wants history — and voters in the fall — to judge his effort a success. If the toll is in that range, he says, "We all, together, have done a very good job." Behind such bravado, though, is a president seeing the pandemic — "the viciousness of it" — in increasingly personal and sober terms. "A lot of people are dying," he says, "so it's very unpleasant." He says a friend, "a little older, and he's heavy, but he's a tough person," landed in a hospital. "I call: 'How's he doing?' 'Sir, he's in a coma. He's unconscious.' He's not doing well." He speaks at length of body bags and "freezer trucks" he's seen on TV taking the dead from Elmhurst Hospital in Queens. The building is so familiar from his New York childhood that "I can tell you the color on the outside, the size of the windows. I mean, I know it very well, right?" "I've seen things that I've never seen before. I mean, I've seen them, but I've seen them on television in faraway lands. I've never seen them in our country." The sun is slanting low in the garden as Trump brings this briefing to a close. "I want our life back again," he says. "I want our country back. "I want the world back. "I want the world to get rid of this." ___ Associated Press writers Zeke Miller and Jill Colvin contriibuted to this report. White House predicts 100,000 to 240,000 will die in US from coronavirus - CNBC Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:11 PM PDT President Donald Trump prepared Americans for a coming surge in coronavirus cases, calling COVID-19 a plague and saying the U.S. is facing a "very, very painful two weeks." "This could be a hell of a bad two weeks. This is going to be a very bad two, and maybe three weeks. This is going to be three weeks like we've never seen before," Trump said at a White House press conference Tuesday. White House officials are projecting between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in the U.S. with coronavirus fatalities peaking over the next two weeks. "When you look at night, the kind of death that has been caused by this invisible enemy, it's incredible." The U.S. has more coronavirus cases than any other country across the globe with 184,000 confirmed infections, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. New York has now become the new epicenter of the outbreak in the world with 75,795 confirmed cases as of Tuesday morning, more reported infections than China's Hubei province where the coronavirus emerged in December. President Donald Trump speaks while flanked by Dr. Anthony Fauci (L), director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Vice President Mike Pence during the daily coronavirus task force briefing in the Brady Briefing room at the White House on March 31, 2020 in Washington, DC. Win McNamee | Getty Images Earlier in the day, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the outbreak in the state may not peak for three weeks. "I'm tired of being behind this virus. We've been behind this virus from day one," the governor said in Albany. "We underestimated this virus. It's more powerful, it's more dangerous than we expected." Trump, who grew up near New York City's Elmhurst hospital in Queens, said no one can believe officials are setting up refrigerator trucks as temporary mortuaries outside the hospital. Trump said New York "got a late start" in rolling out its mitigation efforts. New York City is setting up a handful of makeshift field hospitals to house coronavirus patients at the Jacob K. Javits Center, in Central Park and at the tennis courts in Queens that host the U.S. Open. De Blasio said the city is working with the federal government, the hotel industry and various other businesses to turn other buildings into potential medical facilities. More than 1,000 people in New York City alone have already died from the coronavirus, according to data updated at 5 p.m. ET by the NYC Health Department. "This is going to be the roughest three weeks we've ever had in this country," Trump said. "I wanted as few as a number of people to die as possible. And that's all we're working on." Dr. Deborah Birx , coordinator for the White House coronavirus task force, and Dr. Anthony Fauci said they are still projecting between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths in the U.S. with a peak in fatalities over the next two weeks. A slide presented at the press conference showed as many as 240,000 deaths. Getty Images "As sobering a number as that is, we should be prepared for it," said Fauci, who also sits on the task force. "It will be difficult, not one is denying that we are going through a really difficult time right now." Fauci and Birx both said they hope that efforts will result in fewer of those deaths if possible, especially in hotspots like New York and New Jersey. They are also trying to prevent new outbreaks from cropping up in other areas of the country. "We have to brace ourselves. In the next several days to a week or so we are going to continue to see things go up," said Fauci, who's director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "We can not be discouraged by that because the mitigation is actually working and will work." Birx praised local and state officials in California and Washington state for shuttering nonessential businesses and schools early on, saying that helped slow the outbreak in those states. She said cases in those states haven't spiked like they have in New York. "It's possible and we're watching very closely to make sure it doesn't have a spike," Birx said. "Washington state, about two weeks before New York or New Jersey. California a week before New York or New Jersey, really talked to their communities and decided to mitigate before they started seeing this number." There are very few fatalities among young people in the U.S., Birx said, citing similar results in Italy and elsewhere in the world. People with underlying conditions are also at greater risk of death, scientists say. Earlier Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released preliminary data showing that people with diabetes, chronic lung disease, heart disease or those who smoke may be at increased risk of developing severe complications, even death, if they get infected with the coronavirus. The death projections "are very sobering, and when you see 100,000 people, and that's a minimum," Trump said. "A hundred thousand is, according to modeling, a very low number." The death toll would be even higher without any mitigation measures with some estimates as high as 2.2 million fatalities, Trump said. "This is not the flu," Trump said. He said some executives with "great common sense" suggested that the U.S. "ride it out" and not do mitigation. "This is not to be ridden out." Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:02 PM PDT ACTRESS Koo Stark has lost a legal battle with her ex to support her for life. Ms Stark, 63, said financier Warren Walker promised in 1997 to give her £50,000 a year. Payments stopped in 1999 and Ms Stark, Prince Andrew's ex-lover, took him to court 20 years later. But a judge has deemed it a "non-binding agreement". Ms Stark, mum to Mr Walker's daughter, said he made the promise in return for her turning down a newspaper column called "Diary of a Single Mother". She claimed he was in breach of his promise and another where he pledged to give her £200,000 for a home. Mr Walker, 60, said he owed her nothing, branding her a "gold-digger". After a private hearing, Judge David Halpern QC threw out her claim, saying: "It would not be an exaggeration to say that the parties disagreed on almost everything." They even disagreed on how many times they had been engaged, he said, with Ms Stark claiming that three times they had pledged to get married. He also said Ms Stark had been "living beyond her means for many years". The pair met in 1994 and lived in Knightsbridge, West London, before they split. Viral virus briefing: Where science meets all things Trump - WDIV ClickOnDetroit Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:36 PM PDT WASHINGTON – For a few moments in the Rose Garden, the coronavirus pandemic is a bucking bronco with President Donald Trump on its back. We hear some basics about the world: "Think of it: 151 countries. Copyright 2020 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. It's all-consuming," the 21-year-old said Tuesday via Instagram Live. The Society actress Olivia Nikkanen on Tuesday shared a health update after she tested positive for the coronavirus. The 21-year-old appeared on Instagram Live with her co-star Kathryn Newton and said she had been using her inhaler to help. "I'm feeling better now. I still have some chest tightness. ... This is a scary thing. It's all-consuming," she said, adding, "I'm glad that I'm okay and that my mom is okay." Nikkanen documented her symptoms and experience on Instagram throughout the month, explaining that she came down with body aches, slight chills and a 99.5 degree temperature on March 13. The Supergirl actress experienced chest tightness as her fever decreased and was diagnosed on March 19. Nikkanen said that "for those asking how I have been treating my symptoms," she took Tylenol for her fever and chest pain, drank lots of fluids and got plenty of rest. "I feel extremely lucky to be able to stay home and fully recover, it is a privilege, though it should be a right. If you are also in that position, please think about the people who are not able to take time off work," she wrote. "We are living in an unprecedented time that will no doubt change history forever and no person should be left behind. If I can flatten the curve and protect those at risk, I will do so gladly." Trivia Crack maker Etermax launches Words & Ladders mobile game - VentureBeat Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:20 PM PDT Etermax, the Argentine studio that made Trivia Crack and Word Crack, has launched Words & Ladders, a new mobile game where players solve riddles. Words & Ladders is now available worldwide for free on Android and iOS in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian ,and German. Inspired by the ancient Indian board game Moksha Patam, Words & Ladders brings a lively and colorful version to mobile devices that, in addition to entertaining, stimulates lateral thinking with riddles in order to advance in the game, the company said. Etermax product owner Federico Segovia said in a statement that the game is aimed at curious minds. It emphasizes the value of words as a tool to streamline thinking and share knowledge with friends, family, and other users. He said you can play Words & Ladders at any time and in any place, fine-tuning your memory, improving your vocabulary, and testing your popular culture knowledge, with thousands of puzzles. The game highlights the funny Gallerino, who needs the help of the wisest players to discover the hidden words on the steps towards the goal. The challenger must reach the top of an ascending board of 100 squares (kind of like Chutes & Ladders), while facing the skills of friends, family or random opponents by correctly answering the puzzles that are presented on the climb. Whoever proves to be the fastest will win the game. You earn coins, or buy them at store, and they provide benefits in the game. The winner of a game receives a medal, which gives you rewards by completing and unlocking park attractions in the section with floating islands. To start the game, the player spins the wheel, which will indicate the number of squares a player will advance. After landing on a square, players must answer a riddle by filling in the correct word in less than 30 seconds. Landing on a ladder serves as a shortcut to move faster in the board. But landing on a slide will make you move back. Also, players can collect coins distributed in the squares automatically while moving up; however, if they fall on the opponent's square, they have to answer two consecutive riddles to move forward. Whoever manages to reach the finish line first becomes the winner of the game and receives medals. The medals allows users to complete the park attractions in the section with floating islands and win rewards. Once an island is complete, a new one is unlocked. Etermax, founded in 2009 as an international tech company, has had 700 million downloads for titles such as Trivia Crack, Trivia Crack 2, and Word Crack. The company is also offering in-game advertising services in Latin America through an extensive network of more than 1,800 titles.
