Tomohiro Ohsumi | Getty Images Within Asia, the Japanese and Singaporean economies could struggle the most in the coronavirus pandemic, an economist from Moody's Analytics said on Monday. Both economies were already weak before the outbreak worsened over the past month — and stricter lockdown measures imposed to contain the virus spread will likely exacerbate their respective economic troubles, said Steve Cochrane, the firm's chief Asia Pacific economist. Latest official data in Japan showed the economy shrinking by 6.3% year over year in the three months to December, while preliminary estimates in Singapore indicated that the economy contracted by 2.2% in the quarter that ended in March. "Japan already was in recession coming into this; the first quarter for Singapore was very weak, I think this quarter will be even tougher for Singapore given the lockdown," Cochrane told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia." "And then there is potential that in Japan, if the coronavirus spreads further, there could be more of a real lockdown rather than the kind of a soft lockdown that's in Japan right now," he added. Spike in new casesThe two countries, some of the earliest to discover coronavirus cases outside of China, have reported more than 13,000 infections — among the highest in Asia, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. But unlike China which appeared to have the outbreak under control in recent weeks, Japan and Singapore experienced a surge in new cases of Covid-19 — the formal name of the disease caused by the coronavirus. In response to a worsening outbreak, the Singapore government implemented — and recently extended — partial lockdown measures that include shutting schools and workplaces deemed not essential. In Japan, the government declared a nationwide state of emergency to urge people to stay at home, but still allowed some businesses to remain open. Such worsening economic conditions facing Japan and Singapore are among the reasons why Asia Pacific will have a tough second quarter, said Cochrane. "The combination of the, in a sense, closed economies in Southeast Asia and very weak export trends softening in North Asia it's going to be a tough, tough quarter for the whole APAC region," he said. Cochrane comments came as the International Monetary Fund warned that for the first time in 60 years, Asia — one of the fast-growing regions in the world — will not register any growth this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Chicago house hosts jam-packed party in viral Facebook Live video - TheGrio Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:14 AM PDT The state of Illinois extended its stay-at-home order until the end of May, but some residents in Chicago allegedly were unbothered by the mandate and partied it up in a big way over the weekend. And it was streamed on Facebook Live. The video shows countless people gathered inside a house for a party in, according to WGN-TV, the Second City. Attendees were jam-packed into a room, ignoring orders for social distancing. Some revelers were sporting face masks, while most did without them. READ MORE: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot drove around the city to enforce stay-at-home order The live stream, which began in the midnight hour Sunday, was shared more than 53,000 times and has received more than 1 million views. Chicago police issued the following statement in response to the viral moment, as reported by the TV station: "We are aware of a video circulating on social media depicting a large house party inside of an alleged Chicago residence. While we cannot authenticate the nature or location of the gathering, we want to remind everyone of the social distancing requirements in place." "CPD (Chicago Police Department) will disperse crowds in violation of social distancing requirements, and if necessary, issue citations or as a last resort, enforce via arrest." This is a startling sight, given that the state of Illinois now has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Midwest. Illinois has more than 41,700 recorded cases as of Sunday afternoon, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. New York state leads the country in COVID-19 diagnoses by a wide margin, followed by New Jersey, Massachusetts, California and Illinois. What's more shocking is that Chicago is an epicenter for coronavirus in Illinois. Cook and DuPage counties that encompass Chicagoland account for nearly three-quarters of the state's 1,875 coronavirus-related deaths. READ MORE: Georgia's coronavirus infection rate rose one day after state reopened for business Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that the state's stay-at-home order will be extended through May 30, though with some modifications. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, select businesses, parks and golf courses would be allowed to reopen, but residents would be required to wear masks. Pritzker made the extension to stop a "second wave" of coronavirus cases from occurring if the state reopened too soon. "The projections are clear: if we lifted the stay-at-home order tomorrow, we would see our deaths per day shoot into the thousands by the end of May, and that would last well into the summer," Pritzker said. "No amount of political pressure would ever make me allow such a scenario for our state." Italy's Prime Minister Announces Gradual Easing Of COVID-19 Lockdown - dineshr Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:10 AM PDT Ernesto Ruscio/Getty Images Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced Sunday that his country will soon begin the process of re-opening its economy after undergoing the longest novel coronavirus lockdown anywhere to date. In a nationwide television address, Conte said that beginning May 4, Italians would be allowed to use parks, visit relatives and attend funerals as part of a phased plan for lifting restrictions as the daily number of new COVID-19 cases trends downward from a peak of 6,557 on March 21. There have been more than 26,000 deaths in Italy from the disease since the country's first cases were reported just over two months ago. On Sunday, Italy reported 260 new deaths, its lowest daily total since March 14. Advertisement Conte said if all goes well, stores and museums would reopen beginning May 18 and sports teams could resume group training. Restaurants, cafes and hair salons would be allowed to reopen on June 1. He said classes at schools would resume in September. The wearing of face masks in public and continued social distancing would be strictly enforced even as other restrictions were gradually lifted. Italy was embarking on an era of "responsibility and coexistence with the virus," Conte told the nation. "We cannot continue beyond this lockdown — we risk damaging the country's socioeconomic fabric too much," he said, adding that the "damage" to the national fabric if the shutdown is not lifted "could be irreversible." However, Conte warned that "the curve of contagion can rise again, it will go out of control, deaths will climb and we'll have irreparable damage" to the economy if the people do not carefully adhere to the guidelines. The prime minister did not outline plans for religious services, but after Italy's bishops complained, Conte's office said it would release plans for a return to public worship as soon as possible. Kim Jong-un's Absent, North Korea’s Silent, and Rumors Fly - The New York Times Posted: 26 Apr 2020 11:40 PM PDT SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea is still sending letters and gifts to foreign leaders and domestic workers in the name of its leader, Kim Jong-un. Its news media brims, as usual, with panegyrical propaganda extolling Mr. Kim's leadership. South Korea reiterates that it has detected "nothing unusual" in the North. President Trump has called "incorrect" and "fake" a report that Mr. Kim was "in grave danger" after surgery. All this has done little to stop the rumor mill churning about Mr. Kim's health and the fate of the nuclear state — for the simple reason that North Korea has not reported a public appearance by its leader for two weeks. Nor has it responded to lurid claims about his health. The lack of real information from the hermetic country is giving rise to rampant rumor mongering, leaving North Korean experts, foreign officials and intelligence agencies to parse through it all for signs of the truth. Depending on the news outlet or social media post, Mr. Kim, believed to be 36, is recuperating after a minor health issue like a sprained ankle, or he is "in grave danger" after a heart surgery. Or he has become "brain dead" or is in a "vegetative state" after a heart-valve surgery gone wrong at the hands of a nervous North Korean surgeon or one of the doctors China dispatched to treat him. Or Mr. Kim is grounded with Covid-19. Where did he get it? From one of those Chinese doctors. One rumor circulating in South Korean messaging apps claims that after French doctors could not wake Mr. Kim from his "coma," Kim Pyong-il, a half brother of Mr. Kim's late father, seized power with the help of pro-Chinese elites in Pyongyang, the North's capital. It goes on to say that Mr. Kim's powerful sister, Kim Yo-jong, has been detained while Beijing is secretly bargaining with Washington over the future of North Korea and its nuclear weapons. Seoul has questioned the accuracy of the unconfirmed reports, while the South Korean news media appears to dismiss most of them as online rumors spreading through Chinese social media and beyond. But they cannot be completely ignored, since North Korea is so secretive that the world's most powerful intelligence agencies have been unable to penetrate Mr. Kim's inner circles. Mr. Kim last appeared publicly on April 11, when he presided over a Politburo meeting. Speculations about his health began swirling after Mr. Kim missed state celebrations for his country's biggest holiday, the April 15 birthday of his grandfather and founder of North Korea, Kim Il-sung. Rumors went into overdrive after Daily NK, a Seoul-based website relying on anonymous sources inside the North, reported on Monday that Mr. Kim was recovering from heart surgery performed on April 12. The next day, CNN added to the frenzy, reporting that Washington was monitoring intelligence that Mr. Kim was "in grave danger." On Saturday, TMZ, a celebrity-news tabloid website in the United States, blared: "N. Korea dictator Kim Jong-un reportedly dead after botched heart surgery." More than once, Mr. Trump has wished Mr. Kim well if he indeed were ill. "North Korea's secrecy and our lack of reliable information create a breeding ground for rumors," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. "But his continued absence would be destabilizing as more people in and outside the country wonder if he is incapacitated or dead." In recent days, the South Koreans and their allies in Washington have scoured North Korea with the help of spy satellites and other resources for signs of Mr. Kim and preparations for missile launches. Their efforts led them to Wonsan, an east coast town where Mr. Kim's family has a seaside compound complete with yachts, Jet Skis, a horse track and a private train station. A train "probably belonging to" Mr. Kim has been parked there since at least Tuesday, 38 North, a Washington-based website specializing in North Korea, reported on Saturday, citing commercial satellite imagery. Wonsan is one of Mr. Kim's favorite sites for missile tests. A South Korean news report said on Saturday that the United States had detected preparations for a missile test in Sondeok, farther up the east coast, where North Korea launched missiles in August last year and again in March in Mr. Kim's presence. South Korean officials privately say that Mr. Kim's presence at a missile test could be a strategic way to quiet the speculation. But North Korea has also used such preparations to keep its external foes guessing. There is a deep geopolitical fascination with North Korea, the world's most isolated police state. The country has detonated six nuclear bombs in underground tests and claims to have built missiles powerful enough to deliver them to the continental United States. It is also run by a man who was dismissed as a figurehead when he took power in 2011 in his twenties. Mr. Kim has since established firm control, proving brutal enough to execute his own uncle, a potential threat to his power, and once calling Mr. Trump a "mentally deranged U.S. dotard." Mr. Kim's sudden demise could create a power vacuum with far-reaching implications. Over the decades, American and South Korean officials have discussed top-secret contingency plans, including how to prevent the North's nuclear weapons from falling into wrong hands, and what to do if Beijing sends troops into the North to stabilize its neighbor, which has long served as a buffer between China and American forces based in South Korea. In this secretive society, any likely successor to Mr. Kim amounts to a guessing game, even for outside analysts who have spent their academic careers parsing the North. Will it be his only sister, Kim Yo-jong, who has recently expanded her role in his government? What about Kim Pyong-il, who returned home last year after serving for decades as North Korea's low-key ambassador to Eastern European countries? Some predict a collective leadership to be led by Choe Ryong-hae, the No. 2 in government hierarchy. What if a yet-unknown but ambitious general engineered a putsch? How would North Koreans who have been trained to worship the Kim family respond? "While North Korea's neighbors are mired in domestic politics during a global pandemic, U.S.-China relations are tense, and international organizations are strained, the world isn't well prepared for the death of Kim Jong-un," Mr. Easley said. This is not the first time Mr. Kim has disappeared from public view for weeks at a stretch or faced speculation about his health. But the strange personality cult surrounding Mr. Kim — his bombast, obesity and even hairdo — ensure rumors can take hold. Officials are careful not to quash the rumors outright, in part because their past predictions on the North have sometimes proved wrong. Reporting on North Korea, too, has been strewn with blunders. Top officials reported to have been executed have often resurfaced. Some of the defectors, who feed information to the news media, have been accused of, or admitted to, embellishing their accounts. In 1986, a South Korean newspaper reported a "world scoop" claiming that Mr. Kim's grandfather, then-President Kim Il-sung, died in an armed attack. A smiling Kim Il-sung resurfaced two days later. In 2014, Kim Jong-un disappeared for more than a month, prompting rumors that he might have been deposed in a coup. North Korean media later showed him walking with a cane after what South Korean intelligence called an ankle surgery. In 2015, a North Korean defector claimed that Mr. Kim ordered his own aunt to be killed with poison. But the aunt, Kim Kyong-hui, re-emerged in Pyongyang in January. The rumors can also turn out to be true. In 2008, Mr. Kim's father and predecessor, Kim Jong-il, was absent from view for months. South Korean analysts and the news media speculated, correctly, that he had a stroke. He died three years later. Some of the biggest skeptics of the latest rumors are North Korean defectors themselves. Thae Yong-ho, a former North Korean diplomat who defected to South Korea, said it was hard to believe that any reliable information about Mr. Kim's health was leaked from his most trusted aides. Mr. Thae said that no one in his office in the North Korean Foreign Ministry knew of Kim Jong-il's death in 2011 until they were gathered at an auditorium for an "important announcement" and saw a female announcer appearing on the TV screen, clad in funeral black. Joo Sung-ha, a North Korean defector-turned journalist for the South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo, said in a Facebook post that it was reasonable to believe that Mr. Kim had health problems. But he had zero trust in news reports detailing whether and why the North Korean leader faced a grave medical emergency. Such details about "the health of the Kim family is the secret among secrets," he said, calling the people who claim to know "novelists." WhatsApp sees 70% drop in 'viral message' forwards after applying limits - The Next Web Posted: 26 Apr 2020 11:14 PM PDT Earlier this month, WhatsApp rolled out a new feature to limit forwards to only one contact at a time. The idea was to reduce the spread of misinformation spread on the app amid the coronavirus crisis. After announcing the feature, the company says this move has already had a positive impact on its service, in just two weeks. In a statement, WhatsApp said it saw a 70% reduction in the number of highly forwarded messages:
WhatsApp considers any message forwarded more than five times as a "highly forwarded" message. [Read: WhatsApp increases group call limit from 4 to 8 people] In 2018, WhatsApp first introduced a limit on the number of people you can send that message to in one go. In India, the limit was five people at a time at the launch, which was rolled out worldwide later. The company said this change brought down forwards by 25% at that time. As the chats on the app are encrypted end-to-end, it's hard to track how much impact these steps might have on the spread of misinformation worldwide. But it'll expectedly discourage people to send suspicious messages to a bunch of folks in one go. How Mobile and Online Banking Support Social Distancing Measures - Isthmus Posted: 26 Apr 2020 10:49 PM PDT Restaurants are providing curbside pickup. Shops are offering delivery. DJs are offering drive-by parties to celebrate birthdays. Businesses are finding creative ways to provide access to their products and services while continuing to support community efforts to maintain a safe physical distance from one another. Banks are doing their part too. In fact, banks have been providing products and services all along that can help limit or even eliminate person to person contact, while still allowing clients to make purchases, deposit checks, transfer money, and open accounts. You may already be an avid user of mobile and online banking platforms, but if not, here are some ways these services can support social distancing measures: Mobile Wallet Mobile Wallet is a virtual wallet stored in your smart phone. This virtual wallet stores your debit and credit card information, loyalty cards, tickets to events, and more. When you use mobile wallet to make a purchase, your card data is encrypted, providing a payment method that may even be safer than carrying your physical card. As for social distancing, mobile wallet payments are contactless. That means you do not have to touch the card reader or hand your card to the cashier when making a purchase. Simply hold your phone over the Contactless icon on the card reader and follow the prompts on your phone to verify the purchase. As an added bonus, it can be an even faster way to pay: no more fumbling with your wallet to find the right card! Mobile Deposit While checks are becoming less common, they are still a part of life. With mobile deposit through your mobile banking application, you won't need to make a trip to the bank to deposit that check. Simply use the app to take photos of the front and back of your check, and you can make your deposit right from home! Sending Money If you're looking to avoid checks altogether, you can send money to friends and family through your mobile app or online banking as well. Armed with only a phone number or email address, you can send your friend money for picking up your dinner from your favorite local restaurant, and request money from your sibling for the Mother's Day gift you ordered. It's a fast, safe, and easy way to send money. Online Account Opening Maybe you're looking to switch banks, or open a new account with your existing bank. You can do it all online. If you're switching banks, you'll likely need to provide a bit more information, but if you already have accounts, it's even easier – simply sign in to your Online Banking and find the option to open a new account. It will do most of the work for you! As we all do our part to keep ourselves and each other safe, now is a great time to start using banking products and services you probably already have that will benefit you long past this time of social distancing. UPDATE 1-UK's Johnson could ease lockdown before May 7 deadline - The Telegraph - Reuters Posted: 26 Apr 2020 10:40 PM PDT (Adds details on easing lockdown, background) April 26 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce plans for easing a month-old coronavirus lockdown as early as this week after he returned to Downing Street on Sunday night, the Telegraph reported. Johnson is due to be back at work on Monday after spending a week in hospital with COVID-19 and two weeks recovering at his country residence. Johnson has discussed with ministers the idea of "modifying" the lockdown rather than lifting it, to get across the message that restrictions will remain in place even if workplaces and schools start to reopen, the Telegraph said bit.ly/2Sat3mr late on Sunday. The official number of deaths related to COVID-19 in hospitals across the United Kingdom rose to 20,732, up by 413 in 24 hours, while confirmed cases stood at 152,840, up by 4,463. Posted: 26 Apr 2020 10:32 PM PDT Bored at home? Look to Disney heroines and other cartoon characters for tips on how to stay happy - straits times SINGAPORE - Need advice on how to keep yourself occupied during the circuit-breaker period? Why not take a lesson from these seven cartoon characters, from Disney heroines to a robot and a squid offering essential services? 1. Rapunzel: Keep your mind active, and groom yourselfRapunzel (Tangled, 2010) might have been isolated. This preppy princess lived in a tower in the woods for 18 years, with only her morally ambiguous mother who her for company. However, Rapunzel never let isolation get her down, keeping her mind busy with eclectic activities. In the film's opening song, When Will My Life Begin, she lists the deeds of the day, including the more outlandish "paper mache, a bit of ballet and chess" as well as "pottery and ventriloquy, candle making". And, as everyone's hair grows longer during the circuit breaker, Rapunzel has a few poignant words of advice - don't let isolation stop you from keeping clean and looking groomed - "brush and brush" that hair. 2. Sleeping Beauty: Spend some time with nature, and celebrate milestones and achievementsAlso known as Aurora (Sleeping Beauty, 1959), this languorous lady lived in relative isolation for the first 16 years of her life, growing up under the care of her fairy godmothers. She might have been hiding from the clutches of the evil fairy, Maleficent, but in her spare time, this dreamy romantic, who lived deep in the woods, used her time well. After years traversing the great outdoors alone and familiarising herself with the local flora and fauna, Aurora acquires a vast knowledge of plants, knowing what berries to pick and eat. She also befriends various woodland critters, who remain her loyal companions. And staying home does not mean that life is at a standstill. Aurora took the time to celebrate significant moments, ushering in her 16th birthday with a get-together with her fairy godmothers. 3. Elsa: Take the time to reflect, and spend time with loved onesBeing the heir to the throne of a country, even one as small as Arendelle, can be tough. Coupled with having to keep her ice powers a secret, Elsa (Frozen, 2013) certainly had her hands full and her fists tightly clenched. Before her ascension to the throne, Elsa spent much of the time alone in her room, wrestling with her inner demons. While reflection might be constructive, don't let the circuit breaker socially isolate you. Elsa ultimately managed to open the door and spend some time with her little sister, Anna, building snowmen and re-building their relationship. 4. Ariel: Don't lose sight of your goals and work on your collectionsAriel (The Little Mermaid, 1989) might have a larger space than most, with the entire ocean as her playground and home. However, she is still confined. While her companion, Sebastian the Crab, coaxes, "Darling it's better down where it's wetter" in Under The Sea, our imaginative explorer still yearns to set eyes and fin on the human world - the one place she longs to explore. However, staying underwater does not stop her from living each day to the fullest and making progress on her goals, exploring and learning about the human world that she someday dreams of being a part of, through the debris that drifts down to the bottom. Staying home also allows Ariel to built up her extensive collection of human artefacts. This aquatic archaeologist visits shipwrecks to excavate human items and occasionally finds gems, including "dinglehoppers" and "snarfblatts", to add to her "secret grotto". 5. Belle: Feed your brain and your belly.Belle (Beauty And The Beast, 1991) might have been trapped in the Beast's imposing abode, but this erudite heroine made use of the peace and quiet to devour and digest book after book. With the Beast's extensive library at her fingertips, the brilliant beauty pored over all types of literary texts, from plays to poems. But her brain wasn't the only one getting fed. While staying home, Belle was treated to a "culinary cabaret", chowing down on a veritable feast of French food, which, as Lumiere sings in Be Our Guest, includes "soup du jour" and "hot hors d 'oeuvres". 6. Wall-E: Get to cleaning, and keep entertainedThe titular character, Wall-E (Wall-E, 2008) is one lonely little robot, with the entire planet for him to roam, but no companion to roam with. However, he staves off boredom by spending his free time conscientiously cleaning the earth, compacting trash day after day. And after a productive day, Wall-E keeps his spirits up and the loneliness away by watching Hello, Dolly! (1969) and dancing along to Put On Your Sunday Clothes. 7. Squidward: Work hard, and pursue artistic endeavoursSquidward Tentacles is an essential worker. He works tirelessly as the cashier of fast food restaurant, The Krusty Krab, famous for its signature burger, the Krabby Patty, in cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants (1999- now). After a day of hard work, Squidward goes straight home - but his day doesn't end there. This diligent dilettante spends his time dabbling in artistic pursuits, from practising the clarinet, to completing entire paintings, such as his work, Bold And Brash (2001). While some naysayers might believe that it "belongs in the trash", one cannot deny the dedication to his craft. Keep busy and keep at it, Squidward. 2020-04-26 10:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMigAFodHRwczovL3d3dy5zdHJhaXRzdGltZXMuY29tL2xpZmVzdHlsZS9lbnRlcnRhaW5tZW50L2JvcmVkLWF0LWhvbWUtbG9vay10by1kaXNuZXktaGVyb2luZXMtYW5kLW90aGVyLWNhcnRvb24tY2hhcmFjdGVycy1mb3ItdGlwc9IBAA?oc=5 |

Three States Partly Reopen, despite Health Officials' Warnings - The National Herald Posted: 26 Apr 2020 10:10 PM PDT SAVANNAH, Ga. — Even as the confirmed U.S. death toll from the coronavirus soared past 50,000, Georgia, Oklahoma and Alaska began loosening lockdown orders Friday on their pandemic-wounded businesses, despite warnings from health experts that the gradual steps toward normalcy might be happening too soon. Republican governors in Georgia and Oklahoma allowed salons, spas and barbershops to reopen, while Alaska opened the way for restaurants to resume dine-in service and retail shops and other businesses to open their doors, all with limitations. Some Alaska municipalities chose to maintain stricter rules. Though limited in scope, and subject to social-distancing restrictions, the reopenings marked a symbolic milestone in the debate raging in the United States — and the world — as to how quickly political leaders should lift economically damaging lockdown orders. Similar scenarios have been playing out worldwide and will soon proliferate in the U.S. as other governors wrestle with conflicting priorities. Their economies have been battered by weeks of quarantine-fueled job losses and soaring unemployment claims, yet health officials warn that lifting stay-at-home orders now could spark a resurgence of COVID-19. During a White House press briefing Friday, President Donald Trump spoke optimistically of the economy but also asked people to continue social distancing and using face coverings. The coronavirus has killed more than 190,000 people worldwide, including — as of Friday — more than 50,000 in the United States, according to a tally compiled by John Hopkins University from government figures. The actual death toll is believed to be far higher. In Oklahoma, Gov. Kevin Stitt authorized personal-care businesses to open, citing a decline in the number of people being hospitalized for COVID-19. Those businesses were directed to maintain social distancing, require masks and frequently sanitize equipment. Still, some of the state's largest cities, including Norman, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, were opting to keep their bans in place until at least the end of April. Amy Pembrook and her husband, Mike, reopened their hair salon in the northwest Oklahoma town of Fairview after it had been shuttered for about a month. "We're super excited about going back, but we have caught a little flak from people who say it's too early," Amy Pembrook said. "We just said we can live in fear for a long time or we can trust that everything is going to be OK." With deaths and infections still rising in Georgia, many business owners planned to stay closed despite Gov. Brian Kemp's assurance that hospital visits and new cases have leveled off enough for barbers, tattoo artists, massage therapists and personal trainers to return to work with restrictions. Kemp's timeline to restart the economy proved too ambitious even for Trump, who said he disagrees with the fellow Republican's plan. On Friday, Trump signed a $484 billion bill to aid employers and hospitals under stress from the pandemic — the latest federal effort to help keep afloat businesses that have had to close or scale down. Over the past five weeks, roughly 26 million people have filed for jobless aid, or about 1 in 6 U.S. workers. Without a tried-and-tested action plan for how to pull countries out of coronavirus lockdown, the world is seeing a patchwork of approaches. Schools reopen in one country, stay closed in others; face masks are mandatory in some places, a recommendation elsewhere. In Georgia, David Huynh had 60 clients booked for appointments at his nail salon in Savannah, but a clothing store, jewelry shop and chocolatier that share a street corner with his downtown business, Envy Nail Bar, remained closed. "The phone's been … ringing off the hook," Huynh said. "We've probably gotten hundreds of calls in the last hour." Four women clutching face masks were waiting outside when the salon opened for the first time since March 26. "Yes, I am ready to get my nails fixed," said Alina Davis, a police officer for the local school system, who kept working throughout the crisis. Meanwhile, Nikki Thomas is overdue for a visit to her hair stylist, but she's barely ventured outside her house in the six weeks since she's been working from home. She had no plans to change that now just because of Kemp's decision. "It's obviously extremely stupid and I'm simultaneously exhausted and so angry I can barely see straight," Thomas, 40, said in a phone interview. The gradual reopenings come as coronavirus testing continues to lag across the United States. To date, according to data compiled by the COVID Tracking Project, just under 4.7 million people have been tested in the country of 330 million people. A lack of tests and supplies has hampered the U.S. effort from the beginning. About 193,000 people were tested on Thursday. That's an increase from the two-week daily average of 163,000, but far less than what public health experts estimate is needed to get a handle on the virus. Researchers at Harvard University have estimated a minimum of 500,000 daily tests are needed, and possibly much more, in order to safely reopen the economy. In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis said his administration plans to let pharmacists administer virus tests to reach a broader range of people, including those with no symptoms who believe they may have been exposed. In Michigan, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lengthened her stay-at-home order through May 15, while lifting restrictions so some businesses can reopen and the public can participate in outdoor activities such as golf and motorized boating. Michigan has nearly 3,000 deaths related to COVID-19, behind only New York and New Jersey. New York reported its lowest number of daily COVID-19 deaths in weeks on Friday. The state recorded 422 deaths as of the day before — the fewest since March 31, when it recorded 391 deaths. More than 16,000 people have died in the state from the outbreak. In Denver, Mayor Michael Hancock extended the city's stay-at-home order and nonessential business closures through May 8 just as Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a fellow Democrat, prepared to relax some statewide restrictions next week. In France, the government is leaving families to decide whether to keep children at home or send them back to class when the nationwide lockdown, in place since March 17, starts to be lifted on May 11. In Spain, parents face a similarly knotty decision: whether to let kids get their first fresh air in weeks when the country starts Sunday to ease the total ban on letting them outside. India could have lost 40 million mobile phone connections - Techradar Posted: 26 Apr 2020 09:49 PM PDT India's position as the world's fastest growing market for smartphones could take a major hit if the administration continues to keep both the phones and spare parts off the list of essential supplies during the lockdown period. An association representing electronics and mobile phone industry says as many as 40 million subscribers could be left without a functioning device. Ironically, this sobering bit of market analysis comes alongside a report suggesting a 4% year-on-year growth in the Indian smartphone market during the first quarter of 2020. Market research firm Counterpoint says more than 31 million units were sold between January and February though post-Covid-19 outbreak sales fell 19%. The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), which represents manufacturers, brand owners, technology providers, VAS application and solution providers, distributors and retailers of mobile handsets and other electronic devices, believes that if by end-May, the restrictions on delivering handsets and spares continue, cell phone services would be hit. The smartphone repair market in India has witnessed multi-brand options with the likes of Mobigarage and Yaantra seeking to disrupt the proceedings with doorstep servicing. However, since the midnight of March 25, all such services have been put on hold following the total lockdown imposed by the federal government. The total lockdown has forced even mobile phone manufacturers to stay idle in spite of the fact that companies such as Samsung and Google are offering even free repair of smartphones worth $300 in countries like the United States so that emergency workers aren't inconvenienced.
The ICEA estimates that more than 25 million customers are estimated to be saddled with non-functional or semi-functional devices due to non-available of components in the supply chain. If the government does not include phones, laptops and spare parts in the list of essential items soon, things could only get worse, the body warns through a media statement. The ICEA, which includes big names in the mobile industry including Apple and Xiaomi, estimates the current active mobile phone population in India to be in excess of 850 million and an approximate breakdown rate of 0.25% a month. These people do not have the option of either fixing their phones or buying a new one, the association has said. The Counterpoint report also highlights a 10% shrinkage of the Indian mobile phone market during the rest of 2020 though it expects the major players to retain their market share. Xiaomi leads the race with 30% followed by Vivo and Samsung. The report says Apple grew by 78% during the first quarter to corner 55% of the premium market segment. So, what's the solution now?The industry association has petitioned the federal government led by Narendra Modi to bring mobile phones into the list of essential goods. "We have written to the government that these numbers will expand to nearly 4 crores before the end of May. It is critical that mobile device sales via online, and in a phased manner via retail, as well as service centres with facilities for home delivery and pickup must be declared as "essential services", in addition to grocery and medicines," says ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo. The association also sought to know how some of the states would ensure that smartphone users mandatorily download and carry the government's Covid-19 tracking app Aarogya Setu. "How would they use the app and how can government collect data if the smartphones aren't in working order," an official of the ICEA asked. The latest on the matter is that following ICEA's representation to its nodal government department - the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology - officials of this department have sent a strong recommendation to the federal ministry for internal affairs to include smartphones and laptops into the list of essential goods. Of course, there hasn't been any movement from the federal government on this front and ICEA is hoping that there could be some relaxation when the lockdown reviews begin this week. Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:40 PM PDT KIM Yo-jong is Kim Jong-un's younger sister, and is now seen as the "alter ego" of the North Korean dictator and thought to be the most important figure in the tyrannical regime after her brother. With her brother reported to be ill, she has been tipped to take over the country should the Supreme Leader die. Who is Kim Yo-jong?Kim, 31, was born in September 1987, the daughter of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il. She is said to have had a close relationship with brother Kim Jong-un from an early age. Both studied together in Switzerland between 1996 and 2000 with each depending on the other for company and support during those isolated years. It is believed she went on to further her education at the Kim Il-sung Military University and then computer science at the Kim Il-sung university. Kim is married to Choe Song, the son of top North Korean military official and politician Choe Ryong-hae, and has at least one child born in May 2015. During the Winter Olympics, it was reported she was pregnant with her second child. She was very rarely seen in public until 2010, when she was photographed at a party conference, but became prominent in the lead up to her father's death in 2011. She is thought to have helped arrange her brother's succession to Supreme Leader. Her first job title given in a state news address was a "senior official" of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee. In 2014, In November 2014, Yo-jong was named First Deputy Director of the Workers Party's Propaganda and Agitation Department. She accompanied her brother during elections the same year, signalling her increasing importance in the hermit kingdom. She was made a member of the politburo, the party's most senior ruling committee, in 2017, giving her even greater power including over state security. In 2018, she represented North Korea and her brother at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Later that year, she attended the Singapore summit on June 11 between Donald Trump and the North Korean leader. The dictator's sister was spotted at the signing between the two leaders stepping up to swap a pen which had been provided to sign the agreement. But she was then demoted in 2019, after she was held responsible for the failure of the Hanoi Summit, which saw Donald Trump scrap denuclearisation talks. At the 2019 North Korean parliamentary elections, Kim Yo-jong was elected to the Supreme People's Assembly as a representative for Killimgil. In early April 2020, she was reinstated to the party's powerful politburo according to the state Korean Central News Agency. She has had a remarkable return to favour after falling out of grace with her brother following her removal from the role in 2019 and ordered to keep a low profile. She is now thought to be the mastermind behind Kim's public image, both at home and abroad and is believed to have the full confidence of her brother Kim who is said to have had his own uncle executed for treason. Last month Kim's sister made her first public statement, condemning South Korea as a "frightened dog barking" after Seoul protested about the North's recent live-fire military exercise. She has also publicly praised US President Donald Trump for sending Kim Jong-un a letter in which he said he hoped to maintain good bilateral relations and offered help in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
