Posted: 10 Apr 2020 11:04 PM PDT Philip Ewing Updated at 4:52 p.m. President Trump plans to appoint a council to advise him on how best to reopen America after much of the nation went dormant to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Trump said Friday that he plans to announce on Tuesday whom he has named to make recommendations about some kind of path to normalcy. "I'm going to surround myself with the greatest minds," he said in another marathon news conference at the White House. "We're going to make a decision, and hopefully, it's going to be the right decision." Trump and advisers must balance economic, social, public health and other priorities. The president was asked what metrics he would use in recommending when some places might begin to attempt to get back to normal. "The metrics right here," Trump said, pointing to his temple. Danger of a bounce-back epidemic The president was asked about reports that have suggested that a return to normalcy after about 30 days of social distancing and other countermeasures might mean a boomerang flare-up in cases later this year. Trump said he and advisers would contemplate the possibility of an echo spike after the current surge in cases and deaths slows. "There's always going to be a risk where something can flare up," he said. The president also acknowledged that if an echo outbreak gets desperate enough in some places, another round of social distancing and other mitigation efforts could be needed. But the United States expects to add new tools to help it battle the coronavirus, including tests and treatments, so the model for a response will change over time. And Dr. Anthony Fauci, a top immunologist who has been advising the White House's disaster response, suggested at a briefing on Thursday that normalization might look different for different parts of the country. All the same, if the end has come into view, the nation still must travel a difficult course to reach it, another top physician, Dr. Deborah Birx, said at Friday's briefing. She cited data about infections and deaths that are following expectations but are not yet on a downslope. "As encouraging as they are, we have not reached the peak," Birx warned. Trump: Response supplies flowing Trump asserted on Friday that the federal response has helped mitigate earlier shortages in masks, equipment and other supplies sought for hospitals and health care workers. "We're in great shape in every way," he said. "Ventilators, protective clothing — we're not getting any calls from governors at this moment. We're getting very few calls from governors or anybody else needing anything — we're in great shape for this surge that's coming in some areas." It wasn't immediately possible to assess whether, in fact, the shortfalls that have been reported in some places have been ameliorated; the president's statement followed weeks' worth of efforts to marshal, ship and produce the supplies. Trump has, at various times, dueled with governors or other officials about the local needs or local responses to the crisis. The president said he lamented that new predictions call for about 60,000 deaths from the pandemic but he said that outcome was preferable to the higher projections, including a range of 100,000 to 200,000 deaths. "In the mist of grief and pain, we're seeing signs our aggressive strategy is saving countless lives," Trump said. Trump and public health authorities urged Americans to continue to stay home, keep away from large groups and take the other precautions urged to slow the spread of the virus. The countermeasures are working, officials say. Questions about process for normalization With confidence now strengthened about the validity of the social distancing strategy and early indications about the end coming into sight, discussion has turned to how America may be able to get back to normal. The White House's advisers suggest that there won't be one plan that applies everywhere. "I don't think there are going to be benchmarks that are going to be consistent from one [area] to the other," Fauci said on Thursday. Trump has been under pressure to at least announce an end date to the countermeasures, such as the call for staying home and avoiding large groups, which have amounted to a medically induced coma for much of the U.S. economy. Restaurants, brick-and-mortar retailers, travel and other industries have been paralyzed; some 17 million people applied for unemployment benefits in the past few weeks. With at least a theoretical decrease in sight to new infections and deaths, Trump and Vice President Pence say they're eager to begin assessing how sections of the United States could return to something like normal, permitting people to move more freely and return to work. Trump said on Friday that's the assignment he'll give to the new council he plans to appoint, which he said would include "great business, great doctors — we're going to have have a great group of people." That also could include governors, potentially even Democratic governors, Trump said at another point in the briefing in response to a question. Long path to implementation Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told NPR this week that his agency is working on a plan for normalization, but his comments suggested the necessity for a major and as-yet-incomplete effort. First, the nation needs more coronavirus testing, Redfield said, especially testing with rapid results to render quicker diagnoses. Public health authorities also are looking ahead to new tests that can show whether a person had the virus in the past and may be carrying antibodies. Second, Redfield said, the United States must vastly expand contact tracing to find people who are connected with those who become infected. Copyright 2020 NPR. 5 Things to Know Before You Sign Up for T-Mobile Connect - Clark.com - Clark Howard Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:41 PM PDT ![]() If you want to lower your cell phone bill to about $15 a month, T-Mobile Connect is a new option to consider in 2020. Two new prepaid plans launched just days before T-Mobile's merger with Sprint was finalized and amid the coronavirus pandemic that's disrupted the U.S. economy. But is switching to T-Mobile Connect worth the savings? Here are five things to know before you sign up! Quick Links:1. Network CoverageT-Mobile Connect utilizes T-Mobile's 4G LTE nationwide network and also provides access to 5G in places where it's available. To confirm coverage, map your address and other places that you frequent on T-Mobile's website. These prepaid plans offer domestic coverage only, so international roaming, calling and texting aren't available. 2. Plans and PricingThe price is right for T-Mobile Connect. Its cheapest plan is $15 a month (plus taxes and fees). That could force other low-cost cell phone providers to cut prices to remain competitive. Here are the two plans offered for very light data users:
With these plans, data is capped at either 2GB or 5GB. You can purchase a data pass if you go over your limit. Something unique about T-Mobile Connect is its Annual Data Upgrade feature. Customers will get an additional 500MB of monthly data every year for the next five years — no extra cost. 3. Additional FeaturesThese new prepaid plans don't offer some of the perks that T-Mobile is known for. For example, the T-Mobile Tuesdays and Netflix on Us promotions aren't available to T-Mobile Connect subscribers. According to T-Mobile's website, tethering is allowed up to the data limit, and video typically streams at DVD-quality of 480p. 4. Phone SelectionIf you sign up for T-Mobile Connect, you can choose to bring a compatible device or buy a new one. However, T-Mobile Connect can't be combined with special device offers. Nearly 40 devices were available for sale when I checked, including phones from Apple, Samsung, LG and more. Many of the phones for sale through T-Mobile were expensive. If you're on a budget, you might be better off purchasing a compatible device elsewhere and bringing it to T-Mobile. Use this tool on T-Mobile's website to see if your phone is compatible. 5. Customer ServiceThose who sign up for T-Mobile Connect can get customer support the same way as other T-Mobile customers. T-Mobile Care is available by calling 1-800-937-8997. To sign up for one of the new plans, you can call that number, go to prepaid.t-mobile.com or visit a T-Mobile store. Final ThoughtT-Mobile Connect offers two simple smartphone plans for people who want unlimited talk and text, but don't require unlimited data. The $15 per month plan is among the cheapest around, but the $25 plan has more competition. Some prepaid carriers offer unlimited data at that price point if you're part of a family or group plan. Africans in Guangzhou on edge as coronavirus fears spark anti-foreigner sentiment in China - CNN Posted: 10 Apr 2020 09:04 PM PDT In the southern Chinese city, Africans have reported being evicted from their homes by landlords and turned away from hotels, despite many claiming to have no recent travel history or known contact with Covid-19 patients. CNN interviewed more than two dozen Africans living in Guangzhou many of whom told of the same experiences: being left without a home, being subject to random testing for Covid-19, and being quarantined for 14 days in their homes, despite having no symptoms or contact with known patients. Health authorities in Guangdong province and the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau did not respond to CNN's request for comment. The move comes amid heightened media coverage of the so-called second wave of coronavirus cases, emanating from infections outside of China. Earlier this week, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged authorities to carefully watch for imported cases from other countries, state news agency Xinhua reported. But one aspect of the data has received relatively less public attention: on March 26, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Luo Zhaohui said 90% of China's imported cases held Chinese passports. On Thursday afternoon, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said: "Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, China and African countries have always supported each other and have always fought against the virus jointly. "I would like to emphasize that the Chinese government treats all foreigners in China equally, opposes any differentiated practices targeted at specific groups of people, and has zero tolerance for discriminatory words and actions." Cases spark a backlashGuangzhou has long had the largest African community in China. Because many Africans in the city have short-term business visas, they travel into China several times a year, making it difficult to calculate the size of the African population the city. But in 2017, approximately 320,000 Africans entered or left China through Guangzhou, according to Xinhua. African residents say local hostility to their presence is nothing new. But when coronavirus cases emerged in the African community this month it served to amplify existing tensions. A report on April 4 alleged that a Nigerian national with Covid-19 had attacked a Chinese nurse who tried to stop him leaving an isolation ward at a Guangzhou hospital. The report was shared widely on social media, and local Africans CNN spoke to say a racist backlash against the African community followed. Then on April 7, Guangzhou authorities said five Nigerians had tested positive for Covid-19. Fearing a cluster among the African community, Guangzhou authorities upgraded the risk level of Yuexiu and Baiyun, the areas home to the city's two African enclaves, from low to medium, state-owned Global Times reported. The local government Tuesday reported 111 imported cases of Covid-19 in Guangzhou, with 28 patients from the UK and 18 from the US. But in interviews with CNN, Americans and British nationals in Guangzhou said they had not heard reports of forced testing, home evictions and additional quarantine measures being imposed on members of their communities. Homeless in GuangzhouOn March 21, Nigerian goods trader Chuk, who did not want to use his full name for fear of government reprisals, flew back to Guangzhou, his home since 2009. With China's coronavirus cases seemingly under control, he wanted to resume his trading business, which had been stymied by the pandemic. The area around Guangzhou is a manufacturing heartland, where many Africans buy cheap goods to sell back home. Chuk returned seven days before China closed its borders to most foreign nationals, but upon arrival, he says he was told that he needed to enter government quarantine at a hotel for two weeks. As a trader, Chuk travels frequently, and is accustomed to staying in hotels during his time in China. But on Tuesday, Chuk says that when he was released, along with about 15 other Africans, with a clean bill of health, they effectively became homeless. "We went to the hotel with the certificate, but we were rejected," he said. The group went to the police station to report that hotels were refusing to let Africans stay, but "they refused to talk to us." The Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, which oversees the police, did not respond to CNN's request for comment about events described by anyone CNN interviewed. Chuk says he had no choice but to sleep rough for two nights, before finding a friend's couch to crash on. "Rain fell that day and the next and we were all drenched and our belongings soaked," he said. His story was echoed by others who spoke to CNN. Earlier this week, images began circulating online of rows of Africans sleeping on the streets of Guangzhou, beside their luggage, having either been evicted from their apartments or been turned away from hotels. Other videos showed police harassing Africans on the street. On Thursday, CNN called 12 hotels in Guangzhou, wanting to book a room for an African guest, and was informed by 10 that they would not be "accepting foreign guests anymore." Meanwhile, multiple Africans CNN spoke to reported being abruptly evicted from their homes. No one had evidence of a government directive asking landlords or hotels to turn away or reject foreigners. Rather, they say, these appeared to be decisions made by private individuals and business owners. On Wednesday, Nigerian trader Nonso, whose name has been changed to protect his identity due to fear of government reprisals, says he and his girlfriend received a message from their landlord at 7 p.m. on WeChat, a Chinese messaging app, saying they needed to vacate their flat by 8 p.m.. "I told him I can't vacate in one hour," said Nonso, who pays 1,500 yuan ($212) a month for his apartment in the Nanhai district of Guangzhou, and has lived in China for three years. At 10 p.m. he says his landlord came to the flat and cut off the electricity and water supply. "I asked them, what did I do? I've paid rent until September with two months' deposit. They didn't give me any reason," he said. Nonso called the police, who let them remain in the apartment for the night. But in the morning, Nonso says the landlord returned with a different officer, who said he had to leave. Nonso says he has struggled to find a new apartment to rent. "We have contacted a lot of agents none of them are leasing to black foreigners," he said. Chris Leslie, also from Nigeria, said he was abruptly evicted from his Guangzhou apartment on Thursday, despite not defaulting on his rent and having a valid contract. He had nowhere to sleep that night. "I will just hang out outside," he said. "It is so pathetic. In a country where people don't accept you and they criticize, this is just a bitter humiliation. The most important thing is having somewhere to sleep." On Thursday, several volunteer groups emerged on WeChat, mostly populated by scores of other foreigners, rallying around the displaced Africans, organizing food, masks and sanitation products for those left wandering the streets of Guangzhou without a bed. Katie Smith, an American living in Guangzhou with her Moroccan boyfriend, made two deliveries to newly homeless Africans on Thursday. Her name has been changed to protect her identity, as she, too, fears reprisal from local authorities. "As we drove down the street we saw a lot of Africans walking around," said Smith. "The police came and said they couldn't stay there. They're not letting them gather in groups. So they're just walking up and down the streets with nowhere to go." Videos filmed by a member of one of the WeChat volunteer groups, seen by CNN, shows police trying to prevent volunteers from helping the Africans. "As a black person living in China right now it's pretty scary," said one volunteer who didn't want their name to be reported for similar reasons, said via WeChat. "Don't use the African/black community as a scapegoat for the virus." Imported cases discriminationThe five Nigerians confirmed to have Covid-19 had been to eight restaurants, nine hotels and 12 public places before testing positive, according to the state-run Global Times. Since then, Africans across Guangdong province have reported being tested in their homes, despite having no recent travel history or contact with a Covid-19 patient. Mamelang Mmutlwane, an international student from Botswana at a Guangzhou university, said that at 3 p.m. on Sunday she received a WeChat message from her course administrator saying she needed to be tested, despite having not left China for over six months. "It was only when I got there I realized it was only African students. There are other students from India (in my halls of residence, but) they were all not there. Just our small community (of Africans)," she said. The officials took a swab from the back of her throat and said they would call if she had the virus. She never heard back. As a student, Mmutlwane says she has no contact with the Nigerian trading community. Meanwhile, in Shenzhen, a city about 140 kilometers (87 miles) south of Guangzhou, Youssouf, a Senegalese man who did not want to disclose his surname for security reasons, said that at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, the Chinese authorities came to the apartment he shares with his Canadian wife in a compound with many foreign residents. "They knocked on the door. A guy showed me his phone with my full address, my full name and my country," said Youssouf. He told Youssouf to go to hospital by 5 p.m. to get tested. Youssouf asked if they also wanted to test his Canadian wife. Neither of the couple had left China in the past 12 months. "They said, 'No we are just testing Africans,'" Youssouf said. Canada has more than 20,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and is on the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' list of high-risk countries. The Shenzhen municipal health commission did not respond to CNN's request for comment. "African people are not welcome in China. We've been discriminated against repeatedly," he said. Africans in China have long complained of racism, in the form of Chinese people holding their noses as they walk past, racially offensive adverts on television, and Chinese actors performing in blackface in a nationwide gala. Earlier this year, when Beijing proposed changes to its immigration laws around permanent residency, a backlash emerged on Chinese social media site Weibo against Africans. Many of the comments have since been removed from the platform. Africans on lockdownSmith, the American expat who helped coordinate the food drop, lives in Guangzhou with her Moroccan boyfriend. In late February, the couple went on holiday to Malaysia. She returned on March 17, and says she was was asked to self-isolate at home for 14 days. He returned on March 25, and says he went into a government quarantine facility, paying 400 yuan ($56) a night at a designated hotel, and emerged on Wednesday after testing negative twice. On Thursday, health authorities came to the couple's flat and said that Smith's partner, who did not want to be identified in this piece, would have to quarantine at home for 14 days because all Africans in the city were being put on lockdown, Smith says. Smith says her employer, an international school in Guangzhou, was informed on Thursday that all Africans needed to go into lockdown, as it has several South African employees. CNN has spoken to several other Africans who were visited by authorities on Thursday and told they needed to quarantine at home for 14 days. They say police put alarms on their front doors, which will alert officials if they leave home. There have been no public statements confirming or refuting the existence of an official policy about these measures. Smith was told if she chose not to live in the apartment she shares with her African boyfriend, who has twice tested negative for the virus, she would not have to quarantine. "There's resentment in Guangzhou that a lot of Africans are perceived to be here illegally and that they overstay," said Smith. "There's been a push in Guangzhou to get them out. This has been an easy excuse to push this community out." When the authorities came to Peter Busari's Guangzhou apartment on Wednesday to test him, he filmed the exchange and went live on Facebook. That footage shows officials also asking to see his passport and checking his visa. Wang Wei, a PhD candidate at the University of Hong Kong, who has been studying the African community in Guangzhou for several years, said testing Africans gave the government a chance to conduct a mass checking of passports, too. "It threatens the undocumented Africans," he said. "Officially, African foreigners (in Guangzhou) decrease every year but we all know that undocumented Africans still live in this circle doing business underground or through brokers. But because of the pandemic they will become exposed." Those caught overstaying their visas will be taken into police custody, asked to pay a 10,000 yuan ($1,421) fine and often charged for their airfare back to their home country, said Wang. Roberto Castillo, an assistant professor at Lingnan University, who has researched the African community in Guangzhou for nearly a decade, says the Yuexiu district where the Nigerian Covid-19 cases were found has "historically been a place where the African community is in more tension with the authorities," and was a troubled site during the Ebola crisis of 2014, when Africans of all nationalities were stopped and checked, regardless of whether they were from affected nations. In 2009, a riot among Africans was sparked in Yuexiu after a Nigerian man who was rumored to be undocumented was injured jumping from a building to avoid a passport check. Africans in Guangzhou have been encouraged to leave the city in recent years through a series of immigration policies, economic developments and heightened policing. Meanwhile, on Thursday reports emerged from Africans in China that the crackdown on Africans is wider than Guangzhou. One Ghanaian family in Beijing, with no recent travel history or contact with Covid-19, reported that police came to their apartment in the early hours of Thursday morning and ordered them to leave. The Ghanaian embassy in Beijing confirmed that two Ghanaian nationals were currently seeking refuge there, but declined to comment. Africans in Chengdu and Fujian province also told CNN they had been visited by community officials. China-Africa relations"Why are we being discriminated against like this? Are there no Chinese in Africa?" one African is heard asking a Chinese policemen on the street in Guangzhou, in a video shot on Thursday evening, as many faced another night sleeping rough on the streets of the city. It is a question that speaks to the implications a crackdown on Africans in China could have on Beijing's bilateral relations with governments on the continent, which they have courted with investments for decades and where anti-Chinese sentiment is already rumbling. About 1 million Chinese are estimated to be living in Africa. On Twitter, one user noted that Kenya allowed a plane of Chinese nationals to land in Nairobi, at the height of China's crisis, but when the virus reached Africa the same compassion had not been shown in Guangzhou. On late Thursday night, local time in Abuja, Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama tweeted that he had invited the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Zhou Pingjian to communicate his government's "extreme concern at allegations of maltreatment of Nigerians in Guangzhou." China has been trying to position itself as a friend to African states, as they battle the virus. Li Mingzhu, an official at the National Health Commission, said earlier this month that China has been sending medical teams to African countries for 57 years and would continue to offer help to African countries to improve their ability in combating the novel coronavirus outbreak. But not all African nations are satisfied with that. Ghana's finance minister called on China to ease African countries' debt burden earlier this month, while on March 31, Blessings Ramoba, President of Mining Forum of South Africa, tweeted that the coronavirus had caused the South African economy to lose "billions of rand." "The Chinese govt (sic) must cancel the debt owed by South Africa as a sign of remorse," he said. Zhao Lijian, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, addressed the matter of debt earlier this week, saying: "I believe China will resolve these countries' difficulties via consultation through diplomatic channels." Castillo said one reason the Chinese might be cracking down on Africans in Guangzhou is because they don't trust the low numbers being reported by various nations. But to acknowledge that could be diplomatically awkward. "It's already a PR mess for China," said Castillo. "When they're doing this to foreigners, it's just exacerbating the negativity." Liverpool legend Dalglish tests positive for coronavirus - Goal Posted: 10 Apr 2020 08:25 PM PDT ![]() Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has tested positive for coronavirus after being admitted to hospital this week. The 69-year-old, perhaps the most iconic figure in the Reds' history, entered hospital on Wednesday for treatment on an infection which, a club statement says, required intravenous antibiotics. In keeping with current procedures, Dalglish was subsequently tested for Covid-19 despite having previously displayed no symptoms of the illness. The test result returned positive but he remains asymptomatic. Liverpool's statement says that prior to his admission to hospital, Sir Kenny had chosen to voluntarily self-isolate for longer than the advised period together with his family, and that "he would urge everyone to follow the relevant government and expert guidance in the days and weeks ahead." It added: "He would like to take this opportunity to thank the brilliant NHS staff, whose dedication, bravery and sacrifice should be the focus of the nation's attention at this extraordinary time. "He would also ask that they are given the space to do their jobs during what is an extremely challenging time for them and that his own family's privacy is respected. He looks forward to being home soon." Arguably the greatest player in Liverpool's history, Dalglish made 515 appearances for the club after signing from Celtic in 1977, scoring 172 goals. As a player, he won five league titles, three European Cups and four League Cups and was named FWA Footballer of the Year twice. He took over as player/manager in 1985, and in his first season in charge led his side to their first and only League and FA Cup double. He would add a further two league titles and another FA Cup to his collection, but it was his work in the aftermath of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster which cemented his legacy at Anfield. Worn down by stress, Dalglish resigned as manager in February 1991 and went on to lead Blackburn Rovers to a Premier League title in 1995. Having returned to Liverpool as a club ambassador, he made a sensational return to the manager's seat in January 2011, replacing Roy Hodgson initially on an interim basis. He was appointed permanently for the 2011-12 campaign, and led the club to the League Cup crown. Liverpool were also beaten in the final of the FA Cup but Dalglish was sacked that summer after a poor league season. In October 2013 he returned to the Reds as a non-executive director, and in October 2017 Anfield's Centenary Stand was renamed as The Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand in recognition for the incredible service given to the club. Who's the greatest African legend to play for each major club? - Goal.com Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:24 PM PDT ![]() United haven't regularly dipped into the African market, although with Eric Bailly and Aaron Wan-Bissaka currently at the club, they could realistically call upon a back four that's 50 percent African! To date, however, South Africa's Fortune has been the club's most prominent player from the continent. His versatility made him a useful servant for the club for the best part of seven years, and he also won a league title in 2003. To make sure you get our coverage: Sign up for our daily newsletters. To support our non-profit public service journalism: Donate Now. In the late 1970s I was living in Sacramento, and one summer night El Teatro Campesino came to town. The company had been founded in the 1960s by Luis Valdez to bring attention to the plight of farmworkers, and they often performed on flatbed trucks parked alongside fields where the workers labored. But, on this night, the company was in the state capitol to perform one of Valdez's plays, "Mundo Mata" (The World Kills). And on the stage was a young actress with a captivating and energetic presence. Her name was Diane Rodriguez. ![]() I didn't meet her until about a dozen years later. By then, I was an editor at the Los Angeles Times Calendar section, and she was co-director of the Latino Lab at the Mark Taper Forum. Her job was to help playwrights develop new work — and she did that throughout her 24 year tenure at Center Theatre Group. And she simultaneously kept a career as an actress, playwright and director, working here in L.A., around the country, and internationally. Not quite three years ago, she was a guest on KPCC's The Frame, talking about a play she'd directed, titled "The Sweetheart Deal." The play, set in 1970, focused on a Mexican-American couple who trade their cozy lives in San Jose for a small, dusty Central Valley town to volunteer for the United Farm Workers. It was a personal story:
Diane was a truth teller and she wasn't afraid to speak truth to power. In 2016, I recruited her to attend a KPCC Leadership Circle Brunch, where she would be interviewed by The Frame's host, John Horn. John asked her how she managed to keep one foot in grassroots community theater, while also working at a mainstream theater institution. Her answer:
![]() Those comments aired on The Frame and they didn't sit well with a few CTG board members. Some, Diane told me, wanted her fired. But CTG artistic director Michael Ritchie knew Diane's value to the organization. She stayed for another three years and resigned last summer, on her own terms. Of course, it would not have looked good to fire a member of the National Council on the Arts, appointed by President Obama. And she was also a former president of Theater Communications Group, an influential national service organization. In short, she was a force. And today, Ritchie mourned her passing: "Diane was an incredibly disciplined artist, with equal talent as a writer, director and actor. But she was never more animated than when she was advocating for the work of other artists. The arts community mourns the loss of a leader and advocate for accessibility, inclusion and community." *** On a personal level, Diane was warm and friendly, with a smile and laugh that lit up the room. Her father was from Texas, where I'm from, and she would joke that I looked like her cousins. She and her devoted husband, José Delgado (also an accomplished cultural worker), graciously hosted my wife and I on a couple of occasions, including one memorable New Year's Eve when we watched fireworks from the roof of their Echo Park home. I last saw Diane in December. I was unaware that she'd been battling cancer for more than a year. (Only a small circle of family members and friends knew.) And she was her usual energetic self. She'd asked me to meet over coffee to discuss a major concern of hers: the lack of racial, ethnic and gender diversity among the leaders of the major cultural institutions in Southern California. It bothered her deeply, and she was ready to launch a crusade. And she would draw from the lessons she learned from working with El Teatro Campesino. As that company's founder, Luis Valdez, said today: "The arc of her evolution as an artist and as a representative of the American theatre will give hope and inspiration to new generations of theatre artists. We shall never forget her as long as we live because she was an intrinsic part of our life and joy in our creative being. May the creator speed her to cosmic rebirth." Diane Rodriguez fought the good fight. To the very end. FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE Creators Explain Episodic Release - Nerdist Posted: 10 Apr 2020 06:34 PM PDT Five years after it was first announced at E3 and 23 years after the original changed the role-playing game genre forever on the PlayStation, Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally out. The game is an absolute triumph and easily one of my favorite games of the year, but even after the credits rolled, I found myself wondering about the motivations behind rebuilding one of the most celebrated games of all time from the ground up. To find out, I spoke with Final Fantasy VII Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase and co-director Naoki Hamaguchi via e-mail about why they finally decided to undertake such a monumental challenge, their proudest moments in Remake, what changed from the original, why they decided to go with an episodic release structure, and much more. This interview contains mild spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Remake. ![]() Nerdist: Final Fantasy VII is one of the most critically acclaimed and influential games of all time. It's literally the reason I bought a PlayStation. What motivated the decision to finally remake it? Yoshinori Kitase (Producer, Final Fantasy VII Remake): One of the reasons was due to many fans (including the media!) who wanted a remake, but largely it was because I, myself, wanted to see the world of Final Fantasy VII re-imagined using the latest cutting-edge technology. The ever-popular Cloud Strife took first place in the Final Fantasy poll [that NHK recently conducted in Japan], but the only way for younger players to find out about his origins, should their interest be piqued, was through the original game with graphics from the classic PlayStation era. By providing young gamers with a new and improved Final Fantasy VII Remake, I am hoping this will become a title that will continue to be beloved in the coming decades. Nerdist: What was the biggest challenge in remaking a game of Final Fantasy VII's size and scope, especially given the leaps and bounds in technology since 1997? Naoki Hamaguchi (Co-director, Final Fantasy VII Remake): With the advancements in technology, the ability to depict a range of character expressions has increased. Narrative that made sense within the limitations of the technology in the original would have seemed awkward (or interfere with immersion) if depicted using modern-day graphics. So, it was a big goal for us to adjust and supplement the story for those areas in the game, while adjusting the visuals to be enjoyable as a form of modern-day entertainment, but I think the results are all extremely worth it. One interesting concept I wanted to share – in the original, the story from the Wall Market to the Shinra Building all take place over one night, but when we tried to depict that in Remake, we felt that we were spending too much time during the night from a gameplay perspective, so much so, that having all this happen over one night interfered with that sense of immersion. ![]() So, in Remake, we added some narrative elements that prompt the players to stay in the area after the Sector 7 plate falls down, in order to provide a more realistic sense of time; and by having players then progress in the story to head to the Shinra Building the following day, this would allow them to feel the passage of time from morning to evening. The development team considered the concept of "time" to be part of the game design, to give players a sense of immersion. Immersion into the story is a very important element of the whole Final Fantasy VII Remake project, and we will continue to be meticulous about it. Nerdist: What motivated the decision to make Final Fantasy VII Remake an episodic release? Is there a sense of how long there will be between episodes? Kitase: It was easy for us to imagine, even from the story planning stages, that remaking the game to the highest visual levels and going for a more realistic approach to the world, using modern-day technology would result in a huge volume of work and assets. Simply, with the higher visual quality and the size of the world, it was impossible for a single game. As such, we had two options at that point. One was to fit all the elements into one game by simplifying each of the elements, which basically would have resulted in a very cut-down digest of the original game, where the players would just follow the main storyline, but we would have had to cut a lot of content with that approach, and we didn't think that fans would have accepted that. The other was to focus on the portion of the story up to the escape from Midgar, allowing us to avoid omitting any important scenes and to expand on the original, by going deeper into the world and characters than before. Effectively it would be a new game with emphasis on creating a realistic presentation with substance. We decided that the latter is what the fans are looking for and would enjoy far more. Development is already underway for the next game, and we are striving to make it even better than this one. ![]() Nerdist: I was shocked at how intimidating characters like President Shinra and Heidegger look in their more photorealistic art style. Were there any moments that felt more impactful once they were removed from the super-deformed style of the original? Kitase: A corporate conglomerate being your enemy was definitely unusual for an RPG at the time of release of the original game. There's a scene where the executives of this enemy organization convene for a strategic meeting, but due to how simplistic the character models were in the original, I thought it fell short because there was no way it looked like a serious executive meeting. Now that we are able to make it much more realistic, I believe we are able to portray the evil deeds of Shinra in a more powerful way. Another notable example is the major tragedy that happens mid-way through the game; the devastation and impact is truly emphasized in this iteration. Nerdist: What went into the decision to transition from a turn-based battle system to the more free-flowing system of Final Fantasy VII Remake? Hamaguchi: The concept for the battle system in Remake is quite clear – by evolving the ATB battle system to something you would see in modern day, we could provide a gameplay experience that is "new, yet familiar." On top of that, we figured players would feel a deeper sense of immersion, alongside the visual upgrades, by being able to play with real-time controls. As such, we ultimately decided that the ATB (Active Time Battle) system needed to evolve into something more action-oriented. Through trial and error, our intention was to allocate certain playstyles to the "ATB battle" portion and the "action battle" portion, instead of simply combining the two, to bring out the best aspects of both. The foundation of Remake's battle system utilizes the "ATB battle" portion, a very simple system like that of the original in which players consume an ATB charge to perform a certain ability. And then the "action battle" portion serves the role of highlighting how player technique can leverage the "ATB battle", such as by allowing players to efficiently charge their ATBs or by posing "chance" opportunities for players to use them. One way of imagining it is that the "action battle" portion assists while the "ATB battle" portion scores a goal. A great example of this relationship is seen with "Classic Mode." Having the AI take care of the "action battle" portion automatically to allow players, even those who aren't comfortable or confident playing action games, to play the game by just focusing on determining when to execute the abilities with the "ATB battle" portion, just like in the original. It's not too much to say that we were able to bring this system to fruition because we allocated certain roles to the "ATB battle" portion and the "action battle" portion of the system for Remake. ![]() Nerdist: Is there a specific aspect or moment in Final Fantasy VII Remake that you are most proud of? Hamaguchi: I am proud of being able to expand on the essence of the original and making it work for the game design of Remake. I believe we were able to make this into a title that people can get a sense of "new, yet familiar" through gameplay. Let me share with you something I haven't really disclosed anywhere else until now – I'm sure you all are familiar with the scene in Final Fantasy VII where Cloud goes on a "date"… but there is also a certain part in this game where Could would split off with one of the party members to have an intimate conversation. As you can see, the situations and how we depict them may have been remade into something that matches the style of Remake, but there are many elements representing the essence of the original within the realm of this game. Nerdist: How long do you expect the core experience of Final Fantasy VII Remake to be? Hamaguchi: There may be people who would prefer not to know how many hours the length of this game is before playing it themselves, so I think it's best not to disclose a specific number of hours from the development team. What I will say though is that, as the overall story of the original game is now re-told in more than one game, this first game in the Final Fantasy VII Remake project is designed with the mindset of delivering gameplay content and story that is equivalent to a full mainline Final Fantasy game. So, I can promise you that the amount of gameplay content will be very satisfying. ![]() Nerdist: Obviously, Final Fantasy VII Remake will be a great source of comfort to those who are social distancing to help flatten the curve of COVID-19. How will this pandemic affect the hard-working team at Square Enix and future development in the Remake project? Hamaguchi: This is not limited to just Final Fantasy VII Remake, but I believe that the role of entertainment is the fact that it is able to provide some comfort during these difficult times. The spread of COVID-19 around the world has still yet to slow down, but if people who play Final Fantasy VII Remake could feel even a little bit of comfort, or be moved and feel encouraged to press forward to tomorrow, then I feel that the efforts we've put in as creators is all well worth it. As for the next installment that follows Final Fantasy VII Remake, Mr. Kitase has already made the comment that development has begun. We are putting the safety of the development staff at the highest priority, and we are working together as one so that any impact to development will be kept at a minimum. Nerdist: How much do I need to pay you to get a Final Fantasy Tactics sequel? Kitase: I will let the higher-ups know. Final Fantasy VII Remake is out now on the PlayStation 4. Viral video makes compelling case for social distancing - WJXT News4JAX Posted: 10 Apr 2020 06:33 PM PDT The Ohio Department of Health released the clip, saying: 'Social distancing works'If seeing is believing, then an ad released by the Ohio Department of Health makes one of the most compelling cases yet for social distancing. Social distancing is widely credited by public health experts as the key to slowing the spread of novel coronavirus, which has already infected nearly 500,000 people in the U.S. alone, resulting in roughly 19,000 deaths. The idea behind social distancing is to avoid having close contact with everyone but our immediate families, which should slow the spread of the disease long enough to keep us from overwhelming our hospitals. On Thursday, Ohio's health department posted a 30-second video on its Facebook page. The clip is captioned with the words: "Social distancing works. We are all #InThisTogetherOhio." It shows what happens when a ping pong ball is dropped into a field of mouse traps and then what happens when the same demonstration is done but with the mouse traps spaced out. Experts say New Mexico will lack ventilators and ICU beds when virus hits peak - KVIA El Paso Posted: 10 Apr 2020 05:34 PM PDT ![]() Health ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico -- National experts are projecting that the coronavirus will likely hit its peak in New Mexico around April 21. Data developed by researchers at the University of Washington shows at that time the state will have more than enough hospital beds, however it will fall short by 130 intensive care unit beds and 210 ventilators. The state's Human Services Department is painting an even more grim picture, projecting New Mexico will fall short 1,500 ICU beds and 1,000 ventilators. "There will come a time when we are in a crunch situation where we don't have enough ventilators and that is the greatest concern right now," Dr. Barry Ramo told ABC affiliate KOAT. Representatives from the governor's office said they have placed an order for 1,000 ventilators through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It's not known, however, if the state will get them. Ramo said it is likely that doctors in New Mexico could be in situation in which they have to determine who gets a ventilator. "The other issue which is really the most difficult one is the ethical issue and that is what happens when you get to a situation when you don't have enough ventilators," Ramo said. "How do you make a decision about that? it's really a very difficult one. I hope we don't come to that." OMG, Rupert Grint Is Expecting His First Child With Actress Georgia Groome - Cosmopolitan.com Posted: 10 Apr 2020 05:23 PM PDT ![]()
IDK about you, but I consider myself obsessed with any and all things Harry Potter-related. So when news broke that Ronald Weasley—I mean, Rupert Grint...sorry—is expecting his first child, I (and the rest of the fandom) naturally freaked TF out. Especially since I was today-years-old when I found out that Rupert had a girlfriend, but here we are folks! According to E! News and People, Rupert and long-time girlfriend, Georgia Groome, are going to become parents soon. "Rupert Grint and Georgia Groome are excited to announce they are expecting a baby and would please ask for privacy at this time," his rep told both outlets in a statement. For those of you that don't know, Georgia Groome played Georgia Nicholson in 2008's Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, which means she is an ICON. The movie revolved around Georgia trying to win the affections of "sex god" Robbie on screen. Turns out, she fell for Rupert IRL when they met back in 2011. Rupert and Georgia keep their relationship extremely private and possibly wouldn't have shared the news with fans at all, but rumors about their pregnancy started circulating after they were spotted doing some grocery shopping in London yesterday. Georgia's BB bump was on full display, the paps were able to snap a clear pic of it, and the rest, as they say, is history. That all said, congrats to these crazy kids on the journey that is parenthood. As for me, I'll be placing my bets on every magical boy and girl name in the book. Ciao! Islanders: Ranking The Top Goal Horns And Songs - Eyes On Isles Posted: 10 Apr 2020 05:23 PM PDT ![]() Ranking the 14 horns and goal songs the New York Islanders have used in their history from worst to best.Did you know the New York Islanders have had 14 different variations of goal horns, songs, and celebrations in the history of their franchise? The longest run was the original goal horn and song which came out in 1980 and lasted through 1993. It was the longest-tenured horn in their history, with the current one as the next closest. There has been some good ones with just a few clunkers mixed into it. Let's take a look at the worst to best horns 14. Barclays Center Preseason HornIt's awful. It was so bad, infact the Islanders decided to change it after just one (1) preseason game at the Barclays Center. Their biggest swing and a miss and thank goodness it didn't last very long. 13. 2010-2011 - Live is Life
12. 2009-2010 - Nickelback InstrumentalThe team was bad and so was the song choice. A Nickelback instrumental? Really? 11. 2006-2008 - Rock & Roll With QuagmireThe "Giggity" at the end just doesn't do it for me. There were much better goal celebrations in the Islanders history. 10. 2008-2009 - Gold on The CeilingI actually like this song a lot. It's different and was only used briefly but it was better than Live is Life and Nickelback, that much is for certain. 9. 2015-2019 Barclays CenterIt just didn't sound the same at the Barclays Center. Is this my anti-Brooklyn stance talking? Perhaps, but don't deny it. The atmosphere wasn't nearly the same at the Barclays Center. 8. 2002-2006Not the biggest fan of Rock and Roll part 1. It was adequate, but there were better in Islanders history. The woo's and organ save it for me. 7. 2001-2002The horn is a little more stretched out here. For whatever reason I like the longer horns, very similar to 02-06 but the touch of difference makes it one spot ahead. 6. 1993-1995I like this horn a lot and the addition of the siren is pretty cool as well. Rock and Roll Part 1 is okay, but the beginning is what really does it for me. 5. 2000-2001 - Rock and Roll Part 2Rock and Roll Part 2 is such a classic stadium song. I can't get enough of it. When people think Gary Glitter they think of Rock and Roll Part 2, not part 1! 4. 1980-1993/99-00 (The Original)It's hard to beat the classics. So much nostalgia from Fort Neverlose. You can just picture Mike Bossy scoring and this coming on with the crowd going crazy in the playoffs. 3. 2011-2015 Crowd Chant (Pre Yes Chant)Crowd Chant is a great goal song, I hope the Islanders don't change it anytime soon either. This was the goal song for the final years at the Old Barn. 2. 2015/2019-Current Crowd Chant (With Yes Chant)The "Yes Chant" started in the 2014-2015 season from the Blue and Orange Army and it's now a staple for the Islanders. Whether it's after goals, in the parking lot tailgating, or Jon Ledecky trying to hype people up the "Yes Chant" is now synonymous with the Islanders, sorry Daniel Bryan. 1 1995-1999I absolutely love the fog horn and the siren. This screams Long Island and it's absolutely perfect. It doesn't get as much love because of how bad the team was during that era but from a "cool" perspective, this is it. Jimmy Kimmel on Trump’s Easter blame game: ‘Pin the tail on everyone else’ - The Guardian Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:19 PM PDT Jimmy Kimmel on Trump's Easter blame game: 'Pin the tail on everyone else' - The Guardian ![]() Jimmy KimmelIt's a holiday weekend for America, with both Passover and Easter happening in lockdown. Donald Trump has been "playing a game" for Easter, said Jimmy Kimmel from his home in Los Angeles. "It's called 'pin the tail on everyone else'." The president is "desperate to shift blame for the fact that we were unprepared for this pandemic", Kimmel continued. On Wednesday, his scapegoat was the World Health Organization (WHO), which Trump claimed in a press conference "minimized the threat of coronavirus". "Did they minimize the threat? Because the person who said that this January looked an awful lot like you," Kimmel said, drawing up a clip of Trump telling CNBC on 22 January that he wasn't worried about coronavirus because "we have it totally under control". "In his defense, he's not too bright," said Kimmel. "So now, they're trying to do damage control" – earlier this week, the White House dispatched the US trade adviser Peter Navarro, who wrote a memo in January warning Trump of the coronavirus threat which he ignored, to praise the president on Fox News. "Where do they keep finding all these sycophantic old white guys?" Kimmel wondered. "Do they have a machine that makes them? Are they 3D-printing them somewhere in Idaho or something?" Meanwhile, "the vice-poodle seems to be learning some Trumpy new tricks about self-promotion," said Kimmel, referring to Mike Pence office's refusal to let White House health experts appear on CNN unless the network promised to air the vice-president's non-expert comments. "I don't know how we explain this to Mike Pence, but he isn't Batman. He's Robin," said Kimmel. "Nobody cares about Robin. In the last 30 years they made nine Batman movies, Robin only got to be in two of them. So calm down, boy wonder. This is no way for the assistant commander of the space force to behave." Stephen ColbertA month into lockdown, Stephen Colbert was losing track of the days – swigging from a cocktail, reconfirming that it was indeed Thursday with his production team (his wife and son, off-camera), the Late Show host reflected that coming out of this, we may never be the same. "Of course, all the experts agree that the only way out of this pandemic is to increase, in any way possible, widely available, reliable testing," Colbert said. "So, naturally, it was announced yesterday that the White House will end federal support for coronavirus testing sites on Friday. "Why is Trump opposed to the testing?" Colbert fumed. "Someone tell him they're coronavirus tests, not paternity tests!" Instead, the federal government will transition to state-managed testing sites as part of Trump's strategy to shift responsibility for the crisis to the states. "Oh, OK, if only there was some way to coordinate among the states," Colbert deadpanned, "some way to, I don't know, unite the states of America under one government that had, let's say, an emergency management agency, but on a federal level. Heck of a job, Trumpy!" Seth MeyersAnd on Late Night, Seth Meyers also reacted to the news that the federal government will end funding for coronavirus testing sites this Friday, with some locations shutting down. "You think now is the time to cut off funding for tests? Are you insane?" Meyers fumed. "It's like getting halfway through surgery, taking the guy's spleen out and saying: 'All right, you can wake him up. He can sew himself back together, that's the easy part.'" As of Thursday, roughly 17 million people had lost their jobs in three weeks, and the death toll surpassed 15,000 in the US. "And yet, Trump is once again rushing to pretend this will all go away, and hoping people will forget that," said Meyers, pointing to Trump's comments in a press briefing and on Twitter that people should soon forget about the "invisible enemy" and move on. "This bullshit is the same as people who act terribly and when you point out their terrible behavior cry, 'What of civility?'" Meyers continued. "Civility isn't a right, it's earned! And sometimes people don't deserve, just like people don't deserve their bad decisions to be lost to history. And nothing gives away the game as to how badly Trump has handled this as Trump telling us now we have to forget about it when it's over." Trump has reversed course several times over the past couple weeks, such as when he visited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on 6 March and said he knew a lot about the virus because his uncle was a "super-genius" professor. "That was the day that Trump said anyone who wants a test will get a test, and now, he's cutting funding for testing," Meyers explained. "And I know he'd prefer it if we were all Drew Barrymore from 50 First Dates and we'd wake up each morning and say: 'President Trump? Huh, I'll give that a chance.' But that's not how most of our brains work. We remember the things we've said and we hold you to account for them." 2020-04-10 16:33:49Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiX2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnRoZWd1YXJkaWFuLmNvbS9jdWx0dXJlLzIwMjAvYXByLzEwL2ppbW15LWtpbW1lbC10cnVtcC1jb3JvbmF2aXJ1cy1sYXRlLW5pZ2h0LXJlY2Fw0gFfaHR0cHM6Ly9hbXAudGhlZ3VhcmRpYW4uY29tL2N1bHR1cmUvMjAyMC9hcHIvMTAvamltbXkta2ltbWVsLXRydW1wLWNvcm9uYXZpcnVzLWxhdGUtbmlnaHQtcmVjYXA?oc=5 |
Inside the Beatles' messy breakup, 50 years ago - The Conversation US Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:19 PM PDT Inside the Beatles' messy breakup, 50 years ago - The Conversation US Fifty years ago, when Paul McCartney announced he had left the Beatles, the news dashed the hopes of millions of fans, while fueling false reunion rumors that persisted well into the new decade. In a press release, on April 10, 1970, for his first solo album, "McCartney," he leaked his intention to leave. In doing so, he shocked his three bandmates. The Beatles had symbolized the great communal spirit of the era. How could they possibly come apart? Few at the time were aware of the underlying fissures. The power struggles in the group had been mounting at least since their manager, Brian Epstein, died in August of 1967. 'Paul Quits the Beatles'Was McCartney's "announcement" official? His album appeared on April 17, and its press packet included a mock interview. In it, McCartney is asked, "Are you planning a new album or single with the Beatles?" His response? "No." ![]() But he didn't say whether the separation might prove permanent. The Daily Mirror nonetheless framed its headline conclusively: "Paul Quits the Beatles." The others worried this could hurt sales and sent Ringo as a peacemaker to McCartney's London home to talk him down from releasing his solo album ahead of the band's "Let It Be" album and film, which were slated to come out in May. Without any press present, McCartney shouted Ringo off his front stoop. Lennon had kept quietLennon, who had been active outside the band for months, felt particularly betrayed. The previous September, soon after the band released "Abbey Road," he had asked his bandmates for a "divorce." But the others convinced him not to go public to prevent disrupting some delicate contract negotiations. Still, Lennon's departure seemed imminent: He had played the Toronto Rock 'n' Roll Festival with his Plastic Ono Band in September 1969, and on Feb. 11, 1970, he performed a new solo track, "Instant Karma" on the popular British TV show "Top of the Pops." Yoko Ono sat behind him, knitting while blindfolded by a sanitary napkin. In fact, Lennon behaved more and more like a solo artist, until McCartney countered with his own eponymous album. He wanted Apple to release this solo debut alongside the group's new album, "Let It Be," to dramatize the split. By beating Lennon to the announcement, McCartney controlled the story and its timing, and undercut the other three's interest in keeping it under wraps as new product hit stores. Ray Connolly, a reporter at The Daily Mail, knew Lennon well enough to ring him up for comment. When I interviewed Connolly in 2008, he told me about their conversation. Lennon was dumbfounded and enraged by the news. He had let Connolly in on his secret about leaving the band at his Montreal Bed-In in December, 1969, but asked him to keep it quite. Now he lambasted Connolly for not leaking it sooner. "Why didn't you write it when I told you in Canada at Christmas!" he exclaimed to Connolly, who reminded him that the conversation had been off the record. "You're the f–king journalist, Connolly, not me," snorted Lennon. "We were all hurt [McCartney] didn't tell us what he was going to do," Lennon later told Rolling Stone. "Jesus Christ! He gets all the credit for it! I was a fool not to do what Paul did, which was use it to sell a record…" It all falls apartThis public fracas had been bubbling under the band's cheery surface for years. Timing and sales concealed deeper arguments about creative control and the return to live touring. In January 1969, the group had started a roots project tentatively titled "Get Back." It was supposed to be a back-to-the-basics recording without the artifice of studio trickery. But the whole venture was shelved as a new recording, "Abbey Road," took shape. When "Get Back" was eventually revived, Lennon – behind McCartney's back – brought in American producer Phil Spector, best known for girl group hits like "Be My Baby," to salvage the project. But this album was supposed to be band only – not embroidered with added strings and voices – and McCartney fumed when Spector added a female choir to his song "The Long and Winding Road." "Get Back" – which was renamed "Let it Be" – nonetheless moved forward. Spector mixed the album, and a cut of the feature film was readied for summer. McCartney's announcement and release of his solo album effectively short-circuited the plan. By announcing the breakup, he launched his solo career in advance of "Let It Be," and nobody knew how it might disrupt the official Beatles' project. Throughout remainder of 1970, fans watched in disbelief as the "Let It Be" movie portrayed the hallowed Beatles circling musical doldrums, bickering about arrangements and killing time running through oldies. The film finished with an ironic triumph – the famous live set on the roof of their Apple headquarters during which the band played "Get Back," "Don't Let Me Down," and a joyous "One After 909." The album, released on May 8, performed well and spawned two hit singles – the title track and "The Long and Winding Road" – but the group never recorded together again. Their fans hoped against hope that four solo Beatles might someday find their way back to the thrills that had enchanted audiences for seven years. These rumors seemed most promising when McCartney joined Lennon for a Los Angeles recording session in 1974 with Stevie Wonder. But while they all played on one another's solo efforts, the four never played a session together again. At the beginning of 1970, autumn's "Come Together"/"Something" single from "Abbey Road" still floated in the Billboard top 20; the "Let It Be" album and film helped extend fervor beyond what the papers reported. For a long time, the myth of the band endured on radio playlists and across several Greatest Hits compilations, but when John Lennon sang "The Dream is over…" at the end of his own 1970 solo debut, "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band," few grasped the lyrics' implacable truth. Fans and critics chased every sliver of hope for the "next" Beatles, but few came close recreating the band's magic. There were prospects – first bands like Three Dog Night, the Flaming Groovies, Big Star and the Raspberries; later, Cheap Trick, the Romantics and the Knack – but these groups only aimed at the same heights the Beatles had conquered, and none sported the range, songwriting ability or ineffable chemistry of the Liverpool quartet. We've been living in the world without Beatles ever since. [Insight, in your inbox each day. Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:19 PM PDT Trolls World Tour is a shameless DreamWorks dance party you can attend from your couch - The A.V. Club If a comprehensive history of DreamWorks Animation is ever written, the 2016 semi-musical Trolls may figure into it as a pivotal text, despite its ignominious toy-shelf origins and not exactly record-breaking box office (and now a sequel that has been forced to bypass most theaters entirely due to a pandemic). The studio has cranked out dozens of feature films, but the Trolls series works hard to turn various DreamWorks tropes, touchstones, and clichés into a unified aesthetic. In Trolls and the new Trolls World Tour, celebrity voices, high energy levels, nonsensical catchphrases, cross-promotional branding, cover-heavy soundtracks, and overuse of voice-over narration are all jacked up to 11, creating what are essentially marathon-length dance party endings. Yet somehow, this shamelessness gives the whole enterprise a kind of deranged honor. Advertisement Following the events of the first Trolls, ex-princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) has ascended to the throne and become queen of the trolls, attempting to maintain her kingdom's astronomical levels of glittery joy. When she receives a sneaky invitation from Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) attempting to lure her into a trap, she finds out—through one of many narrated storybook flashbacks—that the world contains other troll kingdoms, sorted by magical guitar strings, each tied to a different genre. Barb is leading the Hard Rock Trolls on a mission to collect all the strings and stamp out other music, like country, techno, classical, funk, and pop. (No prizes for guessing which genre Poppy and her mashup-obsessed friends fly their flags for.) Convinced that Queen Barb is just a friend she hasn't met, Poppy sets off with her skeptical best friend, Branch (Justin Timberlake), to stop Barb from enslaving the other trolls with her militant rockism. Yes, Trolls World Tour takes straight aim at hardcore rockers, with their beloved Scorpions and Heart covers, complete with a tongue-wagging, California-inflected vocal caricature from musical theater enthusiast Bloom. Anyone at least hoping for an original Crazy Ex-Girlfriend-style rock-song pastiche that goes deeper than the riff from "Barracuda" will have to wait until deep into the credits, and even then the song comes from rock band HAIM, rather than Bloom herself. The other genres have oddly cast representatives, too: The movie's hybrid of marketing and casting assumes that the world collectively associates old-fashioned sad-bastard country music with American Idol champion Kelly Clarkson. Surprisingly, the film does temper its poptimism as the story progresses, even daring to suggest that crowd-pleasing, pleasure-driven pop music has a destructive legacy of appropriation to contend with. ![]() Trolls World Tour might have been a better movie if it had delved further into this idea, or evinced a deep-dive love of its own musical touchstones, rather than a generic, half-irreverent enthusiasm. But thoughtful contemplation is not the Trolls way. The Trolls way is to force its frantic dilettantism through a hypercolored filter of animation artistry. The resulting kiddie psychedelia is often wildly inventive, even exhilarating, especially—as with the previous installment—during the movie's more freewheeling first half. The filmmakers led by director Walt Dohrn specialize in giving whimsy a tactile vividness: the country-music kingdom that's built on a landscape of piled-up blankets; the talking slide whistle from the classical-music kingdom that's animated with a stuttery style meant to resemble stop-motion; a wacked-out mixed-media interlude that offers a fleeting glimpse of the afterlife. With all of these colors, oddly-shaped mouths, and exuberantly cheesy pop mashups, it's easy not to notice how thin the supporting characters are. Cooper (Ron Funches) has a subplot about his search for other trolls who are more like him, which becomes a logistical challenge based on his utter lack of distinguishable personality traits. James Corden, meanwhile, continues to earn his title of professional nuisance by voicing Biggie, who tags along on Branch and Poppy's mission seemingly for the express purpose of taking a chorus on "Who Let The Dogs Out." For that matter, the leads aren't always well-served either. It's hard to understand why Trolls World Tour finds time for a thread about Branch struggling to confess his love for Poppy. Platonic male-female friendships are apparently still too transgressive for a family film; the children demand to know whether Branch will be friend-zoned! But Timberlake and Kendrick do make a good, tuneful team, and the starry voice actors are mostly just additional batches of glitter, anyway. Whether it's Sam Rockwell doing a down-home drawl or Anna Kendrick singing a few bars of a troll-centric riff on "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," Trolls World Tour throws everything at its disposal into the air. The frenzy both enhances and undermines its message of inclusivity: The movie lets its cross-genre freak flag fly, secure in the belief that deep down, we're all just different kinds of pop. 2020-04-10 17:30:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiWmh0dHBzOi8vZmlsbS5hdmNsdWIuY29tL3Ryb2xscy13b3JsZC10b3VyLWlzLWEtc2hhbWVsZXNzLWRyZWFtd29ya3MtZGFuY2UtcGFydHktMTg0Mjc5NDE0MNIBXmh0dHBzOi8vZmlsbS5hdmNsdWIuY29tL3Ryb2xscy13b3JsZC10b3VyLWlzLWEtc2hhbWVsZXNzLWRyZWFtd29ya3MtZGFuY2UtcGFydHktMTg0Mjc5NDE0MC9hbXA?oc=5 |
