Posted: 18 Apr 2020 12:21 AM PDT ![]() Local officials have confirmed the veracity of a viral video that shows a girl suspended on an electricity cable 15 meters above the ground in Curug district of Tangerang regency, Banten. The video had been reposted multiple times on social media by Friday. The girl, reportedly a 9-year-old resident of Curug, is seen in the video screaming for help while clinging to an extra high voltage (EHV) power cable that was being installed at the time of the incident. Emergency and logistics head Kosrudin at the Tangerang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) confirmed the veracity of the video, saying that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon.
Kosrudin said that the girl was playing with friends near the EHV cables at the site of the installation project when she was inadvertently suspended in the air. "She did not know that the cables were being [installed]. She hang on to the cable when it was still low," Kosrudin said as reported by kompas.com on Friday. Unaware that the girl was hanging on to the cable, the workers continued to lift the cable into position. The girl reportedly hung on as the cable was pulled up higher and higher, as she was afraid to let go. "Help, I can't hold on anymore. I want to get down," the girl is heard crying out in the 1-minute, six-second video clip. The incident sparked a flurry of activity among local residents, who scrambled to get a bed mattress in place beneath the girl to catch her as she fell. Kosrudin said that the girl had survived the fall with only light injuries, and had been taken immediately to a local hospital. Rizki Aftarianto, of the Tangerang branch of state-owned electricity firm PLN, apologized for the incident and said he would increase supervision at project sites. He also urged members of the public, especially young children, not to play in or around project sites, kompas.com reported. Chelsea players seek 10% pay reduction as they enter talks over wage cuts - Goal Posted: 18 Apr 2020 12:06 AM PDT ![]() Chelsea have entered talks with their players over pay cuts, with the team's playing squad hoping to negotiate a wage reduction of 10 per cent. Blues director Marina Granovskaia is leading the talks on the club side, with Chelsea players negotiating through captain Cesar Azpilicueta. The Premier League has suggested players across the top-flight take a wage cut of 30%, an idea that was not popular among players who preferred to have their money go directly to causes that would aid in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Last week, a group of Premier League players announced the Players Together campaign, which will donate funds to National Health Service charities in an effort to fight the Covid-19 outbreak. That has left each individual club to negotiate wage cuts or deferrals with their own squad, with Chelsea's players open to the idea of a deferral that will save their side money amid the ongoing crisis. Though Chelsea hierarchy were looking to see their squad take a 30% pay reduction, they now accept that figure may end up being less. On Thursday the club announced that they will help their casual working staff by paying them in full for fixtures that have been postponed. The Blues have also been proactive in other ways as they look to pitch in during the crisis, providing 78,000 meals to the NHS and charities that support the elderly and vulnerable groups as well as making the Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge available to the NHS. Chelsea's negotiations are taking place as cross-town rivals Arsenal also negotiate a wage cut with their players, with Goal reporting that a deal is drawing closer. Gunners players had initially rejected a proposal which would have seen them take a 12-month pay cut of 12.5%. The Premier League remains on hiatus, with matches last played in mid-March and fears growing that the 2019-20 season will not be able to be completed. Premier League clubs and league authorities met on Friday, though, and reiterated their desire to finish the season. "It remains our objective to complete the 2019/20 season but at this stage all dates are tentative while the impact of Covid-19 develops," an FA spokesman said. The jersey that Alex Ovechkin scored 'The Goal' in is up for auction - Russian Machine Never Breaks Posted: 18 Apr 2020 12:06 AM PDT ![]() One of the most sought out game-used jerseys in NHL history could be yours. The Capitals sweater that Alex Ovechkin scored The Goal in has been put up for auction on Goldin Auctions. Hockey memorobolia collectors will be able to bid on the jersey until Saturday, May 16, 2020, at 10 PM (if I did my math right). The jersey has already received six bids in 24 hours and is currently listed at $16,000.00. It started at $10,000.00. VideoOn January 16, 2006, Ovechkin scored The Goal on Arizona Coyotes goaltender Brian Boucher. While falling and corkscrewing on the ice, Ovi pushed the puck into the back of the net. "Simply sensational!" a stunned Joe Beninati screamed. Wayne Gretzky, the Pheonix Coyotes' head coach at the time, looked on from the bench in awe. The goal was the most brilliant tally of Ovechkin's Calder Trophy-winning rookie season. He became only the second rookie ever to score 50 goals and 100 points. It was the first of only two seasons Ovechkin wore the team's screaming eagle jersey. Goldin Auctions provided more details about the jersey on its auction page:
The jersey comes with an LOA from The MeiGray Group, the longtime authenticator of the Capitals' game-used gear. Ovechkin recently scored his 700th goal on February 22 against the New Jersey Devils, becoming only the eighth NHL player in history to do so. Ovi, who is tied with David Pastrnak for the NHL lead in goals (48), has 706 total, 188 behind Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 894. S/T to Zach Wolpoff for the heads up. 2020-04-18 04:50:38Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiK2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm9yaWNvbi5jby5qcC9uZXdzLzIxNjAzMzEvZnVsbC_SASpodHRwczovL3d3dy5vcmljb24uY28uanAvbmV3cy8yMTYwMzMxL2FtcC8?oc=5 |

Smart Retailers Are Looking at Holiday 2020 Through a Viral Lens - Total Retail Posted: 17 Apr 2020 10:51 PM PDT The novel coronavirus and the precautions governments and individuals are taking to protect themselves from infection have already had a powerful impact on the global economy. Those impacts are likely to extend well into this year, possibly even into the fourth-quarter holiday shopping period. Between disruptions to manufacturing and supply chains and shifts in consumer behavior and purchase decisions, the retail industry will continue to be hit on both the supply and demand sides. Retailers and brands won't have the luxury of waiting to see how long the current outbreak lasts; they need to plan ahead and place their product bets quickly and accurately for the rest of the year, including the holidays. Forward-thinking retailers are already preparing for a multitude of scenarios by using predictive analytics to understand what their customers really want. They're strategizing on the best practices to accurately make product selection decisions while figuring out how to get those products in a timely manner. Interdependent Web of ConnectionsThe American economy is dependent on global trade for both raw materials and finished products. It's well known that the majority of goods sold in the U.S. are sourced or manufactured overseas, with China accounting for a particularly large percentage of goods sold at retail. As noted in a recent Harvard Business Review article, data from Resilinc, a supply chain mapping and risk monitoring company, show that the world's 1,000 largest companies or their suppliers have over 12,000 facilities, including warehouses and factories, in parts of China, Italy and South Korea, which are profoundly affected by coronavirus quarantines. Manufacturing slowdowns, travel restrictions and port closures have led to delays in shipments of materials and finished products, and now thousands of companies are dealing with tangled international supply chain bottlenecks. But, of course, it's not only supply that's being affected by this new virus and the measures enacted to prevent its spread — consumer demand for many items is also shifting. The New York Times reported in February that more than half the population of China was at that point under some degree of residential lockdown. By mid-March, the entire country of Italy was in lockdown. Despite consumers' being forced to move more and more of their shopping online, self-isolation and quarantine policies, travel restrictions, and shelter-in-place/stay-at-home orders are already deflating category demand and sales for thousands of companies. Shoppers Are Buying Essentials When They Do Go Out to ShopAlthough the effects of disruptions in the global supply chain may not be immediately noticed by American shoppers, a consumer study from First Insight found that news of the virus is impacting the shopping behavior of 75 percent of respondents, up from 45 percent (a 70 percent increase) when comparing to a survey fielded in late February. Women and baby boomers have showed a significant change in purchase behavior. Both groups had been slower to change behavior compared to their gender and generational counterparts, but are now in greater alignment. Seventy-one percent of women now say the virus is impacting where and how they shop, a 115 percent increase from late February, compared to 67 percent of men (a 76 percent increase). While millennials report the greatest impact on purchase decisions (80 percent, a 48 percent increase from the previous survey), baby boomers now have aligned behavior more with their younger counterparts, with 73 percent saying the same, a 121 percent increase from the prior survey. Ninety-eight percent of all respondents believe the outbreak will somewhat or significantly affect the U.S. economy. While all generations are changing their shopping habits in the wake of this pandemic, shoppers of all ages are still flocking to brick-and-mortar stores to stock up on essentials. Target CEO Brian Cornell noted, "We've certainly seen a surge in-store traffic as guests begin to stock up on those household essentials [and] those core food and beverage items." According to CNN, sales at Costco in February were up 12.4 percent from a year ago, and the company attributed 3 percent of that to an uptick in consumer demand for essentials from concerns over coronavirus. Looking AheadRetail has always been an industry that thrives off proactive thinking, and this is a time that absolutely requires it. Companies are already facing a time squeeze, with summer and fall orders and shipments delayed. Those delays will have cascading effects over the rest of the year, and retailers and brands will need to significantly speed up their holiday product development, sourcing and shipping operations to ensure that October and November holiday deliveries don't arrive in January. Even though some overseas factories are beginning to come back online and some shipping routes are reopening, manufacturing delays and snarled supply chains will not instantly sort themselves out once the outbreak is no longer considered a crisis. Therefore, companies need to move quickly now. The Wall Street Journal recently summed up the thoughts of Thomas O'Connor, senior director and research analyst for supply chains at Gartner, this way: "If production in China doesn't return to normal levels by late April, U.S. retailers could face challenges stocking up in time for the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons." Those retailers and brands that can best predict future demand for particular products, and release the right product, at the right price, at the right time, using predictive analytic tools at their disposal, will be better positioned for the rest of the year. While many retailers and brands still rely on physical samples being sent from the manufacturer, and in-store testing which can be time consuming and often costly, digitizing the supply chain will be critical to success in the new retail reality. With today's retail technology, digital product creation and 3D design are table stakes, and can significantly shorten the supply chain lead time. Companies will need to continually assess what aspects of their inventory will be most affected by a disrupted supply chain, where they can afford to raise prices, and what products they should introduce at a time when many consumers are preoccupied with safety and security. Retailers that take advantage of digital product creation and data insights that take into account the preferences and opinions of consumers will be better able to mitigate the effects the novel coronavirus will have on their businesses throughout the rest of the year. Although it's not clear yet exactly what aspects of retail will be most impacted, long-term planning that incorporates the voice of the customer will help retailers and brands have a more successful 2020 holiday season. High Schoolers Expelled Over Racist Viral Video Showing 'Recipe' for African Americans - Newsweek Posted: 17 Apr 2020 09:21 PM PDT Two white students from Carrollton High School in Carrollton City, Georgia were expelled on Friday after posting a 50-second "cooking video" in which they use "ingredients" to create a black person made of racist stereotypes. Their expulsion occurred after the video went viral online and several classmates identified the students. In the video—which was initially posted onto the video-sharing social network TikTok—a white, bearded student and a blonde female student lightly kick open the door to a household bathroom. Showing their faces in the mirror, she announces, "Hey, today we're making..." The camera then zooms down the sink where there's a piece of notebook paper with a plural form of the n-word written on it. The male student says the word in a deadpan voice. Imitating a cooking show, the male student lifts cups of water and pours each one into the sink, over the paper with the n-word written on it. Under each cup is a piece of paper with the name of an "ingredient" written on it. The female student reads each ingredient as it's revealed. She announces, "First we have 'black.'" He then pours the cup of water into the sink over the n-word. "Next we have, 'don't have a dad.'" The other ingredients include "eating watermelon and fried chicken" and "rob people." "Specifically whites," the male student adds as he refills the "robs people" cup over and over using the sink tap. He then starts vigorously pumping hand soap into the sink as the tap runs, the wet n-word paper now clogging the sink. One cup labeled "make good choices" is empty, insinuating that black people don't. The students feign surprise over the cup having nothing in it. ![]() "Tonight it has been brought to my attention that an inappropriate video was created on the TikTok social media platform," Carrollton City Schools Superintendent Mark Albertus wrote late Thursday on a statement posted via Twitter. "Please know that this video has been addressed immediately and any student involved in the production of this video will face serious consequences. Carrollton City Schools' top priority is the health and well-being of our students and this type of behavior will not be tolerated." Albertus added that the video is "not representative of the district's respect for all people," and that "the racist behavior observed in the video easily violates this standard." "They are no longer students at Carrollton High School," he wrote. Carrollton High Principal David Brooks added that even though the video was recorded outside of school, "it doesn't alleviate the students' responsibility to uphold a high standard of behavior." "It is our priority to keep our schools safe," he continued, "and there is no doubt this incident has caused significant tension at Carrollton High School, across the district, state and nation—even the world." Due to the coronavirus, Georgia's public schools will remain closed for the remainder of the year. Students still receive remote instruction over the internet, so it's unclear what effect the expulsion will have on the students. Newsweek has reached out to Carrollton High School for comment. The school had not yet responded by the time of publication. According to the last U.S. Census, 28.7 percent of Carrollton City's population is black and 53.9 percent is white. Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:51 PM PDT ![]() When you have a huge hole where your nation's leadership should be, it is wise to borrow the best of other people's leaders. They can't make America's big decisions, but they can fill in some of the gaps. In the Covid-19 pandemic, we can take comfort in their competence and use their wisdom to guide us about what we each should do. Right now, the US and many other nations are considering easing social distancing and other restrictions if and when their new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations become flat or start to fall. And German Prime Minister Angela Merkel (who happens to have scientific chops) has an important lesson that we should all listen to. On Wednesday, she laid out important logic about the coronavirus pandemic that hasn't been communicated clearly enough here in the US. In simple and clear terms, she explains why Germany doesn't have much "wiggle room" in its hospital capacity. Because of this, any lifting of its lockdown, like allowing some shops to open next week, will remain "on thin ice." Merkel's explanation, which went viral, is centered on the metric called R0, or basic reproduction number. It represents the number of people a sick person will infect on average in a group that's susceptible to the disease (meaning they don't already have immunity). She says that if Germany's R0 were to shift from a flat rate of 1.0 to 1.1, the nation's hospitals will be crushed by October, without sufficient resources to care for all of the severely ill Covid-19 patients. If the R0 goes up to 1.2, that overload hits in July. And so on. Covid's current global average R0 is 2-2.5, but Germany has done a good enough job of managing its outbreak to get its reported estimated R0 down to 0.7 as of April 17. That's low enough for Merkel to sanction "a tentative easing of restriction." America, for many reasons, has even less wiggle room than that. Germany has eight hospital beds per capita compared to America's 2.7 beds. In ICU beds, Germany has 8.3 per capita while America has 6.6. It is also testing for coronavirus at twice our rate (21 vs 9.8 tests per 1,000 people). Without robust testing, you can't keep good tabs on R0 or the related Rt — and you can end up flying blind, risking health system overload and avoidable deaths. Covid-19 spreads in an exponential way, and it's worth emphasizing exponential growth's dynamics. Tiny shifts in risk grow very quickly, leading to deadly results as this useful tweet thread shows:
The small choices we each make about risky behaviors are like playing Russian Roulette, but with a machine gun. You may have thought that if you're not in a high-risk group (like older adults), and the case fatality rate is around 1 percent, then the threat isn't so great. Surely we can loosen restrictions? But that's like being locked in a room with 100 people, where your collective behavior determines how many bullets are live in the machine gun that's about to strafe all of you. You might not die, but others surely will. Covid-19 is already the leading cause of death in many areas, including New York state, Louisiana, and Washington, DC.
