Since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, United have struggled to be in the league title race - with their best finish a distant second to Man City in 2017-18 - while they haven't been a contender in the Champions League either. With the coronavirus-forced hiatus having a significant effect on football worldwide, Shearer feels the Red Devils are in an ideal position to pounce on their preferred transfer targets. United have been consistently linked to the signatures of Sancho, Kane and Grealish, and Shearer believes the trio could catapult the Reds to a championship-winning level. "Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was spot on when he said there could be a number of clubs forced into selling their big players for financial reasons," Shearer told The Sun. "Whereas the majority will look to survive first before looking at transfer targets, Manchester United are in a different boat. "And with their financial clout, they are in a good position to take advantage in future transfer markets once football is eventually back. "To get anywhere near where they want to be then they need three, possibly four, big signings. | Viral: Viewers Spot A Suspicious Figure In TikTok User's "Home Alone" Video - NDTV News Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:18 PM PDT  A TikTok user's video shows something suspicious in the background while he claimed to be home alone. A man may have recorded a possible home invasion while making a dance video. TikTok user Reubix_Cube (aka Reuben) posted the video of himself shaking a leg to Doja Cat's Say So two days ago. In the caption, he claimed that he was home alone while recording the dance - but the footage he filmed tells a different story. The video that shows him dancing alone has gone viral on social media, but not for his great moves. Instead, viewers noticed some suspicious activity in the background that has left many stunned. In the video, something appears near the stairs in the background for a split second before disappearing again. Some viewers described it as "a head poking around the corner", while others said it looked "like a monkey". See for yourself:
Since being posted online, the video has collected over 1.8 million views, along with nearly 8,000 comments ranging from shocked to sceptical. A follow-up video where the TikTok user reacted to the footage has racked up more than 6 million views on the video-sharing platform. In the comments section, thousands debated whether the figure was a ghost, a home intruder, an animal or if the whole thing was even real. "What the heck was that on the stairs?" asked one person in the comments section. "The amount of anxiety I have from this video. That's someone literally poking their head to look at you," said another. "Your basement is haunted, Reu," said another. However, not everyone was convinced that the TikTok user was really home alone and could have recorded an intruder. Some also accused him on staging the video. "So staged. The fact that he put 'home alone' in the caption!" wrote one TikTok user. "He definitely planned this," another remarked. In one of the several follow-up videos that Reuben posted later, he denied that the video was staged and said that he had trouble sleeping since reviewing the footage. | Lockdown politics increasingly pit economic, health concerns - ABC News Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:02 PM PDT  WASHINGTON -- The global health crisis is taking a nasty political turn with tensions worsening between governments locked down to keep the coronavirus at bay and people yearning to restart stalled economies and forestall fears of a depression. Protesters worrying about their livelihoods and bucking infringements on their freedom have taken to the streets in some places. A few countries are acting to ease restrictions, but most of the world remains unified in insisting it's much too early to take more aggressive steps. In the United States, there is clear evidence of the mounting pressure. The Trump administration says parts of the nation are ready to begin a gradual return to normalcy. Yet some state leaders say their response to the pandemic is hindered by a woefully inadequate federal response. After insisting the country's virus testing system was without fault, President Donald Trump announced Sunday evening that he would be using the Defense Production Act to compel increased manufacturing of testing swabs — one of several products governors have been begging the president to help them acquire. White House officials will also be holding a call Monday with the nation's governors to help walk them through where to find supplies, he said. Trump also remained defensive, however, vowing that there were enough swabs to go around. "Swabs are easy," the president said, bringing one to his news briefing and waving it in front of reporters. That came hours after Washington state's Democratic governor, Jay Inslee, accused Trump of encouraging insubordination and "illegal activity" by goading protesters who flouted shelter-in-place rules his own administration has encouraged. "To have an American president to encourage people to violate the law, I can't remember any time during my time in America where we have seen such a thing," Inslee told ABC's "This Week.'' He said it was "dangerous because it can inspire people to ignore things that actually can save their lives." Trump supporters in several states have ignored social distancing and stay-at-home orders, gathering to demand that governors lift controls on public activity. The largest protest drew thousands to Lansing, Mich., on Wednesday, and others have featured hundreds in several states. The president has invoked their rallying cry, calling on some states with Democratic governors to "LIBERATE," and he defended the demonstrations Sunday night, saying "these people love our country. They want to go back to work." Inslee likened Trump's response to "schizophrenia." Larry Hogan, the Republican governor of Maryland, said it "just doesn't make any sense." "We're sending completely conflicting messages out to the governors and to the people, as if we should ignore federal policy and federal recommendations," Hogan said on CNN's "State of the Union." Shutdowns have disrupted economic, social, cultural and religious life and plunged the world into a deep economic slump unseen since the Great Depression. Tens of millions of workers have lost their jobs and millions more fear they'll be next. With the arc of infection different in every nation and across U.S. states, proposals have differed for coping with the virus that has killed more than 165,000. China, where the pandemic began, has lifted travel and other restrictions, but customer traffic has been slow to return. Germany is enforcing social distancing but on Monday intends to begin allowing some small stores, like those selling furniture and baby goods, to reopen. Spain said children can leave their homes beginning April 27. Albania planned to let its mining and oil industries reopen Monday, along with hundreds of businesses. The death toll in the U.S. was near 41,000 with more than 758,000 confirmed infections, while the global total has surpassed 2.4 million, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The European Center for Disease Control said the continent now has more than 1 million confirmed cases and almost 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus. The true figures are likely significantly higher since mild infections can be missed, testing is limited and many countries have been too overwhelmed by illnesses to effectively count them or have tried to underplay the extent of their outbreaks. The International Monetary Fund expects the global economy to contract 3% this year. That's a far bigger loss than 2009′s 0.1% after the global financial crisis. Still, many governments are resisting pressures to abruptly relax lockdowns. "We must not let down our guard until the last confirmed patient is recovered," said South Korea's President Moon Jae-in. In Britain, which reported 596 more coronavirus-related hospital deaths on Sunday, officials also said they're not ready to ease efforts to curb the virus's spread. U.K. minister Michael Gove told the BBC that pubs and restaurants "will be among the last" to leave the lockdown, which is now in place until May 7. France's health agency urged the public to stick to social distancing measures that have been extended until at least May 11 and Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said people could be required to wear masks on public transportation, and suggested no one plan faraway summer vacations even after that. Trump is pushing to begin easing the U.S. lockdown in some states even before his own May 1 deadline, a plan that health experts and governors from both parties say will require a dramatic increase in testing capacity. But Vice President Mike Pence insisted the country has "sufficient testing today" for states to begin working toward the initial phases of reopening their economies. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said his state can't begin lifting restrictions until it is able to test more people daily. "Right now, we're not even close as a nation, let alone as a state, to where we should be on testing," he said. Economic concerns that have increasingly collided with measures to protect public health are popping up throughout the U.S. Business leaders in Louisiana have slammed New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell for imposing restrictions they say have unfairly shuttered economic activity outside the city. A full-page ad in The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate newspaper urged an easing of lockdowns, even as the paper featured nearly nine pages of obituaries in a city hard-hit by the virus. States including Texas and Indiana have announced plans to allow some retail and other activity to resume. But in New York, where the daily coronavirus death toll hit its lowest point in more than two weeks, officials warn that heavily effected areas aren't ready to ease shutdowns of schools, businesses and gatherings. Geopolitical and religious tensions stretching back centuries have further complicated the global response to the virus. But Jordan's King Abdullah II said the outbreak has made "partners" out of "our enemies of yesterday, or those that were not friendly countries yesterday — whether we like it or not." The Aldridge Secondary School student has recently finished filming as lead child actress for a short film called Toppy where she plays the role of a child with psychological issues who has an imaginary friend. This short film is going to six film festivals and Sophie attended the first one via Zoom due to the coronavirus restrictions on Sunday. Sophie has also recently finished filming on set for her first feature film production with a London-based film production company, which is due to be released at the end of this year. And she is in a music video, called Hideaway, which she is lead singer in with Liam Price, who was on The Voice Kids last year. Sophie said: "I am really excited to hit the film scene. I have always strived to get to that point and have really enjoyed playing the role of Freya for the short film Toppy and excited that it will be going to lots of film festivals and that I have been put forward for young actress under 16 at a few. I'm really excited to be going back to the Birmingham Film Festival again too. "Just before isolation I was on set for a feature film production too which I am really looking forward to seeing when it is released. I met some really big and famous actors on set who were absolutely lovely and gave me so much advice and tips for my journey in the film industry. "I have recent also been part of a duo singing a song, partly co-writing some of the words and acting in the music video too which was amazing. "I love my theatre shows too. I am so so passionate about acting and singing and have worked hard, and will continue to work hard. It is fun too and I have met so many lovely people on my journey. "I would like to say thank you to many of the wonderful actors, actresses, film producers and festival companies who have shown me lots of support, offered lots of advice and their time across my Instagram and Twitter profile too. | NY passes virus 'high point' as Trump and governors feud - Free Malaysia Today Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:32 PM PDT  NEW YORK: New York, the epicentre of America's coronavirus infections, appeared to have passed the peak of the outbreak on Sunday, as President Donald Trump clashed with state governors over ending lockdowns. The US has so far recorded more than 746,000 coronavirus cases and 40,000 deaths, far more than any other nation. New York has borne the brunt of the virus, which has killed more than 18,000 people in the state, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker. "We are past the high point, and all indications at this point is that we are on the descent," state governor Andrew Cuomo told a press conference. "Whether or not the descent continues depends on what we do, but right now we're on the descent." He added that "it's no time to get cocky and it's no time to get arrogant". New York's improving data came as the ongoing political battle between Trump and other state governors worsened again, with virus testing rates emerging as the focus. Experts say extensive testing is crucial to a safe reopening of the economy, but some state governors said testing capacity fell far below the levels needed to avoid sparking new outbreaks of the virus. Vice-President Mike Pence told Fox News Sunday that every US state had the ability to do enough testing "to move into phase one". "Phase one" ends stay-at-home restrictions for healthy people, and allows restaurants, cinemas, sporting venues, places of worships and gyms to reopen with physical distancing. But Virginia Governor Ralph Northam pushed back at the Republican administration's claims that there was enough testing, saying "that's just delusional". Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, said "we could double or even triple the number of tests that we're executing daily if we had the swabs and reagents". She called for more federal government help. "I am right on testing. Governors must be able to step up and get the job done," Trump tweeted. 'Delusional' With tens of thousands dead the battle lines are being drawn ahead of the November election, and Trump – who declared himself "a wartime president" during the pandemic – is seeking to reduce damage to his chances of holding onto office. The anti-lockdown protests in several US cities in recent days attracted support from Trump, who in tweets called to "LIBERATE" Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia – all states with Democratic governors – from stay-at-home orders. "Our president, obviously, has been unable to deliver on tests. Now he has chosen to focus on protests," Northam told CNN's "State of the Union". | Trump shocks in time of crisis with his standard approach - CNN Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:32 PM PDT  Trump's daily coronavirus task force press briefing has become the chief exhibit in this deficit of national stewardship and has largely shed any purpose in conveying useful information at a fraught moment — if that was ever the aim. Instead, the President spends his time perpetually trying to repair his own image by disguising his belated and faulty response to the emergency. It didn't have to be this way. Despite criticism of the administration, no White House -- Republican or Democratic -- could have predicted every twist of this crisis given the enormity of the political and economic upheaval that has overtaken the country. Not all failings in testing and supplies are personally Trump's fault. But his refusal to accept any responsibility at all raises questions about what he thinks the presidency, a problem-solving job of last resort where the buck stops, is actually for. The President's plan to use Sunday's briefing to polish his own personal narrative became clear when he read out and held up a Wall Street Journal opinion column praising his leadership. He also played an out-of-context video of New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo praising his administration's work — including on providing ventilators — and said reporters should praise him too. Yet Trump insisted after his trawl for personal credit: "It's not about me. Nothing is about me." This came on the day when US deaths from the pandemic topped 40,000 and raced upwards, though Trump claimed he had saved a million lives through his leadership — despite taking several months to recognize the magnitude of the unfolding disaster. Vice President Mike Pence's recognition of the scale of the tragedy appeared far more heartfelt than the President's. As a political device, Trump's bitter clashes with journalists may delight his supporters, generate soundbites for conservative media and provide fodder for Twitter pundits. His willingness to indulge his personal grudges shone through when he admitted that Utah's Mitt Romney was the only Republican senator excluded from a congressional task force on reopening the country because of his vote to convict the President on one article of impeachment. "I'm not a fan of Mitt Romney, I don't want his advice," Trump said. But the wild daily monologues may be hurting him more broadly with the US public in an election year. Recent polls show that Trump's 'crisis bounce' with voters has eroded. The President's performance on Sunday — he rambled for 45 minutes or so while his top public health officials sat and watched — even snuffed out the rare positive news on a grim day. In the Q&A session he held forth on issues including the World Trade Organization, one of his hotels and the Russia probe, which had little to do with the medical exigency. It was left to Pence to convey data suggesting that large metro areas like New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Boston appear to be stabilizing after agonizing weeks of death. Trump is not the only US leader descending into the politics of insult. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has become increasingly personal in blasting the President as a "weak person" and a "poor leader." But the President's conduct is most striking, given the expectations of his office. Trump dismisses testing problemsThe big question of the day is why, weeks into the pandemic, state governors and medical professionals still say the US testing infrastructure is inadequate. Trump opened up his briefing by saying that the US had conducted more gross tests than a list of developed countries. The administration now celebrates the completion of just over 4 million tests. Yet on March 9, Pence pledged that 4 million tests would be distributed by the end of that week. Testing is so important because experts argue that millions of tests per week may be necessary to detect, trace and isolate coronavirus infections to ensure there is not a resurgence of the virus as the nation slowly opens. Such a spike could quickly overwhelm hospitals and confound hopes of an economic opening. But state governors warned on Sunday that they need more federal help with testing, specifically in acquiring reagents and swabs needed to make the testing kits they do have work. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland conceded that the administration was ramping up testing. But he added on CNN's "State of the Union" that "to try and push this off to say that the governors have plenty of testing and they should just get to work on testing, somehow we aren't doing our job, is just absolutely false." Vriginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, said on the same show that claims by Trump and Pence that there were enough tests available should all states want to open back up was "delusional." "We've been fighting for testing, it's not a straightforward test. We don't even have enough swabs believe it or not," Northam said. On NBC's "Meet the Press," Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine said he could "probably double, maybe even triple testing in Ohio virtually overnight," with more reagents. The President, however, appeared to mock such complaints, appearing in the briefing room with a swab that he opened with a theatrical flourish in front of the cameras. "Reagents and swabs are so easy to get," Trump said. But in a recognition that the opposite is the case, the President invoked the Defense Production Act to surge production of swabs to an addition 20 million per month. But his move again raised the question of why he waited so long to act, a consistent undercurrent of his leadership during the pandemic. Experts and medical professionals have been warning for months that a reagent shortage was almost certain to occur. The administration's promises on testing would be far more credible were it not for the repeated claims that testing in the country, as he put it again Sunday, was in "great shape." And the President also made a fresh attempt to offload blame for the testing issue onto governors, fueling an impression that much of his strategy is about shielding himself politically. "The governors wanted to have total control over the opening of their states. But now they want to have us, the federal government, do the testing," Trump said. "Testing is local. You can't have it both ways." Strictly speaking Trump has a point. Testing is conducted in hospitals, clinics and elsewhere. But the traditional role of the federal government in a time of crisis is to identify problems where states individually, or collectively, appear to be having a problem and to take steps to mitigate it. The President just doesn't seem to believe his office implies such a duty. The testing issue parallels Trump's fury about the question of ventilators. Several weeks ago, several hotspot states feared that they would run out of the machines, forcing doctors to make agonizing life-and-death decisions. Trump appeared resentful that he was asked to use a federal stockpile of ventilators and finally invoked wartime powers to surge their manufacture. The public's embrace of social distancing, the practice of doubling up patients on the machines, and states that managed to buy ventilators from overseas meant the feared crunch never arrived. Trump Sunday argued that he was right about not needing as many ventilators. This is one case where his attitude in the heat of the moment might have ended up robbing him of a share of deserved credit. Trump says protestors have 'cabin fever'Trump's leadership credentials are also coming under scrutiny given his encouragement of protests in several states against stay-at-home orders. Conservative media is also whipping up the furor after Trump last week singled out Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia — all important battlegrounds in November with Democratic governors — and said they should "liberate" their people. The call appeared to directly contradict his own guidelines for a phased national opening. Dissent is a core American value and is vital at a time when states and local leaders are claiming powers to suppress the vitality of US life. But protestors risk spreading the coronavirus and could endanger others — including police and medical staff who will treat them if they get sick. The fact that the President himself should foment a rebellion at a time of stretched political tensions, with tens of millions of Americans confined to their homes, is extraordinary. It's just the latest occasion when Trump, the outsider, has seemed to flout the authority of the government he is supposed to lead. "They have got cabin fever, they want to get back. Their life was taken away from them," Trump said of the protestors. Mitt Romney to join his new bipartisan task force focused on reopening the country amid the coronavirus pandemic because of lingering animosity against the Utah Republican who voted in favor of Trump's impeachment. Asked at the White House if skipping over Romney shows he still has a grudge against him, Trump told reporters pointedly, "Yeah, it does." "I'm not a fan of Mitt Romney," the President said at a White House briefing Sunday evening. "I don't really want his advice." Trump's admitted grudge comes during a worldwide crisis when traditionally leaders would work to unite the country. The President's response to the pandemic to this point has included repeated attacks on US governors and local leaders, a series of false claims and a frequent deflection of blame. Nearly 100 lawmakers from both parties — including all of Romney's Senate Republican colleagues — were tapped to join "the Opening Up America Again Congressional Group," according to a list released by the White House. The President reviewed the list of which lawmakers would be on the task force before it was finalized, an official previously told CNN. Romney was not included and was not asked to be on the call with other senators, another official confirmed. The President's comments about Romney on Sunday mark just the latest slight in their contentious relationship — one that grew increasingly tense during the Senate's impeachment trial of Trump after Romney broke ranks with the Republican Party to vote to convict the President on the charge of abuse of power. | White House Defends Testing Capacity As Governors Ask For More - Red River Radio Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:32 PM PDT Updated at 8:37 p.m. ET At a briefing of his task force Sunday, President Trump said his administration would have a call with governors and the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Monday to discuss how to increase coronavirus testing capacity in states. Trump's remarks come as the administration defends its testing response and guidelines for states to start resuming normal operations, even as several governors said they are far short of the testing capacity they'd need to lift restrictions. The president said governors are relying on state laboratories for testing instead of commercial labs, and he said commercial labs are also operating at 30% capacity and can go higher. Earlier Sunday, Trump tweeted that he is "right on testing" and that governors "must be able to step up and get the job done." Vice President Pence said that the country is doing about 150,000 tests a day and could double that by working with states to activate additional lab sites. But experts at Harvard University estimate the United States needs to be testing at least 500,000 people a day, if not more, to begin to "reopen" the economy. The Trump administration unveiled guidelines Thursday for how states could take a phased approach to restarting economic activity. Speaking to Fox News' Chris Wallace Sunday morning, Pence said the current level of testing is enough for an approach that tests people with coronavirus symptoms and monitors people who are especially vulnerable. "We believe the testing that we have today, Chris, across the country, once we activate all of the labs that can do coronavirus testing, is sufficient for any state in America to move into Phase 1," he said, assuming a state's cases are on a 14-day decline. But several governors said Sunday they don't have the testing needed to consider easing stay-at-home restrictions. In an interview with CNN, Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam said it was "delusional" to suggest that the nation's testing was adequate. Added Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, to the network: "The No. 1 problem in America" is "the lack of testing." Another Republican, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, told NBC he needed the Food and Drug Administration to prioritize companies working to implement a test with a "slightly different formula." If approved, he said the state could double or triple testing capacity "virtually overnight." Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said her state would be able to double or triple testing capacity but needed supplies including swabs and reagents. Increased testing is critical before reopening Michigan's economy, she said. "It would take down the risk associated with taking actions to reengage parts of our economy because we would have a lot more data about how prevalent COVID-19 still is in our states," the Democrat told told Meet the Press. Boosting swab production; elective surgery guidance To help with testing, Trump at the task force briefing said the administration is preparing to announce an expansion of swab production, adding that he will use the Defense Production Act to help boost production. He also talked about the administration's efforts to procure new ventilators, N95 masks and gowns, and said the government's Project Airbridge had brought in millions of pieces of medical equipment. Doctors and patients had been advised for weeks to put elective surgeries on hold as the medical system struggles with a wave of COVID-19 patients. CMS Administrator Seema Verma announced that the agency would require nursing homes to report to patients and their families any cases of COVID-19 inside the home, and report any cases directly to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. | Gunman kills at least 12 in rampage across Nova Scotia - CNN Posted: 19 Apr 2020 08:32 PM PDT The updated death toll does not include the suspected gunman. "Our important investigational work is continuing. Out of respect for the families who have yet to be notified, we cannot provide any additional information at this time," said RCMP National Headquarters spokeswoman Catherine Fortin in a statement to CNN. At a media conference Sunday evening, police described chaos with multiple 911 calls coming in late Saturday at a property in Portapique, Nova Scotia. "When police arrived at the scene the members located several casualties inside and outside of the home," RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather told reporters.  Police said they are not certain how many people died or were injured. The deceased officer was identified as Constable Heidi Stevenson, a mother of two and 23-year veteran of the RCMP. Another officer is in the hospital receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries he suffered in the incident, the RCMP said on Facebook. Leather said a search for the suspect lasted overnight and led them to several crime scenes miles apart. The suspect was eventually spotted late Sunday morning at a truck stop. "The search for the suspect ended this morning when the suspect was located and I can confirm that he is deceased," said Leather. Nova Scotia RCMP identified the suspected gunman as Gabriel Wortman, 51. He eluded police for several hours overnight Sunday as fires were reported in many locations in the area.  The manhunt was complicated by the fact that the suspect is believed to have been wearing as least part of what looked to be an RCMP uniform, and may have been driving a vehicle made to look like a police car, Leather said. "Of course that's an important element in the investigation, the fact that this individual had a uniform and a police car at his disposal certainly speaks to it not being a random act," Leather said. But Leather said it was too early in the investigation to tell what the gunman's motivation was and that some victims "appeared not to have a relationship with the assailant shooter." A law enforcement told CNN earlier that authorities were searching half a dozen crime scenes, beginning in Portapique and stretching to Enfield, where the suspect was apprehended. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police had warned the public on Twitter that Wortman may have been wearing a RCMP uniform and driving a silver Chevrolet Tracker that appeared to be a police vehicle. But they clarified that he was not employed by the RCMP. As they chased the gunman, police told residents to stay inside and lock their doors, warning that he was considered "armed and dangerous." WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump says he will use the Defense Production Act to increase manufacturing of swabs used to test for the coronavirus. Many governors have for weeks urged the White House to further evoke federal powers to increase private industry's production of medical supplies as health officials work to slow the spread of the virus. Trump has generally been reluctant to do so. But the president said during a briefing Sunday evening that he would use the measure to increase production of swabs and that he would soon announce that production reaching 10 million per month. To emphasize the point, Trump waved a swab in front of reporters. Trump also said Vice President Mike Pence would hold a call with governors on Monday to discuss testing and send a list of lab facilities in their states. New guidelines on nursing home reporting WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has announced new guidelines requiring nursing homes nationwide to report to patients, their families and the federal government when they have cases of coronavirus. Seema Verma, head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said during a Sunday evening White House press briefing that the new rules will mandate that nursing homes report cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She said the moves are aimed at increasing transparency about the spread of the virus at facilities where populations can be especially vulnerable to its effects. There have been 7,121 deaths at long-term care facilities nationwide, according to an Associated Press tally. Verma also discussed plans to allow elective surgeries to resume after being placed on hold during the pandemic. Group estimates thousands of UK nursing home deaths not counted LONDON — An industry group estimates thousands of deaths related to COVID-19 in British nursing homes have not been reflected in official figures. The National Care Forum represents non-profit nursing home providers and says its research suggests 4,040 people have died after contracting the illness in British nursing homes. The figures are based on data from nursing and residential care homes looking after 30,000 people, which is 7.4% of Britain's nursing home population. They reported 299 confirmed or suspected deaths from the new coronavirus during the week ending April 13, which is triple the number in the preceding month. Southern Italian town gets locked down tight ROME — The governor of the southern region of Campagna has placed a tighter lockdown on the town of Saviano, near Naples. Regional governor Vincenzo De Luca said that the decision to stop people from leaving or entering the town was 'inevitable to prevent an outbreak. Spain reports lowest death toll in a month MADRID — Spain has reported its lowest daily death total for confirmed coronavirus victims in nearly a month as the country contains a savage outbreak that has killed more than 20,000 people there. Spanish health officials said Sunday another 410 people have died in the last 24 hours. That is the lowest daily death toll since March 22. It takes the total to 20,453 virus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic. Spain also reported 4,218 confirmed new cases, pushing the total to 195,944 — second only to the United States. French navy says more than 1,000 on ship test positive PARIS — Figures from France's military leadership show more than half the sailors aboard the country's flagship aircraft carrier contracted the new virus as the ship traveled through the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. South Carolina stores, beaches plan to re-open COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina retail stores and public beach access points that had been closed to halt the spread of the coronavirus will be allowed to reopen next week, The Post and Courier reported Saturday.
