The eight new things we learned about New T-Mobile - Urgent Communications Posted: 02 Apr 2020 11:24 PM PDT The merger between Sprint and T-Mobile is now finally, officially closed. And as a result, the newly combined company – often referred to as "New T-Mobile" – is now offering some new details about how it's going to challenge market leaders AT&T and Verizon. Sprint and T-Mobile have previously offered a wide range of details about their merger plans during the two years they sought regulatory approvals for the transaction. For instance, New T-Mobile will spend $40 billion over three years to build a massive 5G network. It also plans to offer in-home Internet services across wide swathes of the country in a challenge to the nation's cable providers. But that's old news. Here are the new things we learned about T-Mobile's merger efforts and go-to-market plans: 1. It obtained Tunney Act approval He had initially been expected to render a decision in November. It's unclear why he didn't. Nonetheless, T-Mobile confirmed that Judge Kelly issued his Tunney Act approval Wednesday. 2. T-Mobile did not obtain CPUC approval The agency did schedule a vote on the transaction for April 16, but T-Mobile decided not to wait. The company withdrew the wireline portion of its merger from consideration at the agency, which it argued eliminated its need for CPUC approval of the transaction. However, T-Mobile said it would continue working with the CPUC to conclude the agency's review on April 16. 3. CEO John Legere is leaving early "I've been fortunate enough to lead this company for the past seven years, but now it's time for me to hand the reins over to Mike Sievert. The board of directors and I agree that it makes perfect sense for Mike to assume his leadership role on day one of the new company. He's ready!" Legere said in a statement. 4. T-Mobile is starting its 5G buildout "almost immediately" "Mobile" - Google News April 02, 2020 at 10:28PM https://ift.tt/39E3EY7 The eight new things we learned about New T-Mobile - Urgent Communications "Mobile" - Google News https://ift.tt/2P9t7Cg Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
T-Mobile has merged with Sprint. Here's what it means for your devices - CNET Posted: 02 Apr 2020 11:24 PM PDT T-Mobile has at last merged with Sprint, uniting the nation's third- and fourth-largest carriers and shaking up how some of you may get your wireless service. But this massive shift in the industry brings with it questions for people with T-Mobile and Sprint devices. With more than 100 million users, the two carriers now have a customer base closer in scale to larger rivals AT&T and Verizon. Having one less wireless player elicited concern from regulators that easing competitive pressure would mean higher prices, but T-Mobile has maintained it would continue to serve as the aggressive "Un-carrier" underdog representing consumers. But there will be big changes coming, especially for Sprint customers who all of a sudden have a new provider. From devices and 5G to rate plans and features, here is a breakdown of what you can expect. Will my phones still work?Just because the merger has closed does not mean that your Sprint phone will no longer connect. Both T-Mobile and Sprint's networks will still be up and running, and devices that connect to them should still be able to do so for now without any interruptions. Will my coverage be improved? With Sprint now joining T-Mobile users on both networks should start to see improvements in coverage. In fact, this process has already started, with T-Mobile expanding a roaming agreement to let Sprint users onto its network as part of its response to the coronavirus pandemic. Related stories: How to choose the best 5G network 9 things to consider when choosing a low-cost carrier What 5G phones are available now What about T-Mobile customers?T-Mobile customers will gain extra capacity thanks to Sprint's spectrum. This should mean faster speeds and better performance. "More spectrum means better performance, whether it's 5G or (4G) LTE," says Walter Piecyk, an analyst at LightShed Partners. "And T-Mobile is buying more spectrum." Will I need to get a new T-Mobile phone if I'm on Sprint?Nope. And if you bought a phone in the past few years -- such as a recent iPhone or Galaxy -- it likely already has support for both T-Mobile and Sprint's respective networks. In February, a Sprint spokeswoman said that "about one-half," or about 20 million users, of the company's branded customers "have devices that are already compatible with T-Mobile's network." Exactly how much of T-Mobile's network your phone will be able to tap into, such as T-Mobile's wider-ranging 600MHz spectrum (also known as Band 71), will depend on how recent it is. If you have an iPhone XR, XS or later you should be good for the full T-Mobile experience, but devices older than 2018 may not be able to tap into the full capabilities of T-Mobile. A full list of devices that support T-Mobile's 600MHz spectrum can be found here. What about 5G?When it comes to 5G the situation is a bit more complicated due to, well, the complicated nature of 5G in the US as a whole. Some of Sprint's 5G phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, should be able to tap into T-Mobile's higher-frequency millimeter wave 5G network that has launched in pockets of six cities like New York, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. They will not, however, be able to use T-Mobile's low-band 5G network that it has launched nationwide. The same is true for T-Mobile's 5G phones that it launched last year. The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, which can tap into its millimeter-wave network, will be able to use Sprint's midband 5G network that is currently live in 9 US markets (and parts of Miami) but will still not be able to use T-Mobile's own nationwide low-band network. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G and OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren, which launched late last year on T-Mobile, will be able to use T-Mobile's low-band 5G and Sprint's midband network, but not T-Mobile's millimeter-wave. The cheaper Galaxy S20 5G similarly will only work with T-Mobile's low-band and Sprint's midband. For the best 5G experience that can tap into everything a combined Sprint and T-Mobile will offer -- including T-Mobile's low-band and millimeter-wave networks and Sprint's midband 5G spectrum -- you'll want to have a 2020 phone such as Samsung's Galaxy S20 Plus 5G or Ultra 5G. Both of those Samsung phones, regardless of if you bought them at Sprint or T-Mobile, should work with the other's 5G networks. What about plans? As part of its efforts to get the deal approved by regulators, T-Mobile promised not to raise rates for at least three years. This means that you won't have to give up your current T-Mobile plan to take advantage of the new network, at least not right away. T-Mobile also is the one major carrier that currently doesn't require a special plan to use 5G. On Wednesday T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert told CNET that Sprint users will similarly still be able to keep their current plans. What about Boost? Those on Sprint's prepaid brand Boost will be going to Dish as part of a divestiture T-Mobile agreed to with the Justice Department. Dish, which plans to launch its own wireless network, has previously said that it would close the deal to acquire Boost and spectrum from Sprint within 30 days of T-Mobile closing its deal. Although it is unclear exactly what Dish's wireless offering will look like, the satellite provider is able to use T-Mobile's network for the next seven years. For now, nothing changes to the service or plans here either. "Mobile" - Google News April 02, 2020 at 05:21AM https://ift.tt/2wNi0bz T-Mobile has merged with Sprint. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 10:58 PM PDT "The Farewell" was arguably the sleeper hit of 2019. Lead actress Nora Lum, better known as Awkwafina ("Ocean's 8," "Crazy Rich Asians"), walked away with the Golden Globes' best actress award and put director and writer Lulu Wang's name on the map. Wang has now officially joined the club of female American directors changing the scene in Hollywood, one woman-centric film at a time. Lesser known is the fact that Japanese actress Aoi Mizuhara made her Hollywood debut in "The Farewell," for which she spent the past few months living in Los Angeles and promoting the film. "On my own, I saw this movie five times. I loved it that much," Mizuhara tells The Japan Times. "One time, I even took my mother." "The Farewell," as the opening subtitles inform us, is "based on an actual lie" from Wang's own life experience. Awkwafina plays Wang's alter ego, Billi. Billi, who was born in Beijing but grew up in New York, has been informed that her beloved grandmother, Nai Nai, has lung cancer, though Nai Nai is unaware of this fact. With her sons living abroad — Billi's father lives in the United States and her uncle is in Japan — the family agrees to hold a reunion in Changchun, a city in northeast China's Jilin Province, to bid Nai Nai a heartfelt farewell. To this end, the family concocts a story that Billi's cousin will marry a Japanese woman named Aiko (Mizuhara) and the ceremony will be held in Changchun. "I was told that Aiko was 'the most Japanese-y Japanese woman ever seen in a Hollywood movie.' I was really proud of that," says Mizuhara. "So many Hollywood movies get the Japanese woman all wrong. Like, they're bowing all the time and apologizing left and right, and they speak strangely accented Japanese. Aiko is none of those things." If Mizuhara's character is one thing, it's that she's in the dark. While she understands the importance of respecting the matriarch in an Asian family, she doesn't speak any Mandarin and, most importantly, she knows nothing about Nai Nai's illness. The poor girl is also confused about what exactly is required of her (hello, she's supposed to be the bride — the center of attention!). Instead, everyone except Nai Nai seems wildly distracted — including the groom. At the time of this interview, Mizuhara is back in Japan, though she says she misses Los Angeles, and talks about the city as she remembers it, pre-COVID-19. "I love the freedom of southern California and the whole LA culture," she says. The city is full of actors and performers working day jobs, hoping to get their big break. Hollywood is so very different from anything I had experienced in Asia." Mizuhara is normally based in Beijing and, unlike Aiko, she's completely fluent in Mandarin and is now eager to add English to her accomplishments. "I was studying the language in LA but it's very hard," says Mizuhara. "English is an entirely new language for me, since I spent so many years living my life speaking Japanese and Mandarin." Mizuhara spent her childhood in Shenyang, in China's Liaoning Province. "My father was transferred there, so we all went with him," she says. "After eight years in Shenyang, we returned to Japan, and my parents were adamant that I retained my Chinese. They felt that China was the future, and that Mandarin language skills would go a long way. This may be true, but I do feel that English is best when it comes to conversing with the world." Growing up, Mizuhara secretly pined to be an actress and went to her first audition when she was in middle school. "My parents were very strict about schoolwork and getting good grades," Mizuhara says. "They would never have agreed to a career in the entertainment industry." For the 10 years that followed, Mizuhara kept that audition a secret. She excelled at school and went on to study law at Kyoto University before attending Waseda for graduate school. Through it all, she never got over the acting bug. She took a year off from Waseda and went to China, where she enrolled in the performance department of the extremely competitive Beijing Film Academy. Among its alumni are Zhang Yimou ("Raise the Red Lantern," "Hero") and Chen Kaige ("Farewell My Concubine"), and Mizuhara was thrilled to be inside the storied gates, though "the work was very, very hard." In 2014, she graduated at the top of her class — the first overseas student to do so — and her dialogue delivery in Mandarin was said to be better than her native classmates. Since 2014, Mizuhara has worked almost exclusively in China, in TV and film, and you can even hear her voice on the Japanese language announcements at Beijing International Airport. Last year, an agent knocked on her door and asked her to audition for "The Farewell." Initially, Mizuhara turned the agent down, as he could give her no particulars, "just that they needed a young Japanese woman." Eventually, she got in front of the camera and auditioned for the part of Aiko. "I was so surprised when I first saw the movie in its entirety," says Mizuhara. "When we were shooting, the story struck me as very serious and moving, but it turned out to be a comedy as well. And on that first viewing, I thought, 'Oh no, Aiko is so awkward, she's rigid and nervous!' But after seeing her several times, I realized that Aiko was fine as she was. I mean, who wouldn't be awkward prepping for a wedding in a foreign country where no one spoke your language and everything was different?" Mizuhara says she felt naturally in tune with the character she was playing. "Aiko's tenseness seemed natural and real, which really worked out for the story," she says. "And I liked that Wang didn't give any directions. She just told me to be myself and do my thing. She has such a flair for scooping out all the good stuff from a performance and putting it on film." "The Farewell" is, perhaps, emblematic of the way female directors work and how they seem to zero in on the joys and trials that come with being a daughter, a mother or a grandmother. "The Farewell" also shows the deep ties that some immigrants have to their family and heritage, though they may live thousands of kilometers away from their hometowns. In the film, Billi calls her grandmother weekly and has taught her to say the English-language sign off of "Love you" before hanging up. "I feel that 'The Farewell' speaks to everyone, and its message is universal," says Mizuhara. "A lot of people are estranged from their grandparents, though they may live in the same country. And families are the same the world over — they argue, they make up and many of us try to do the best to make our families happy. One of the best things about this film, though, is that everyone in the story exists. They're all real, including Aiko." Has Mizuhara ever met the real Aiko? "No, but I watched a video of Aiko's wedding. I could tell she was head-over-heels in love with her Chinese husband," Mizuhara says. "The Aiko in the film is more restrained, and kind of clunky. That worked, too, but if I were to do it differently, I would be all starry-eyed and lovey-dovey." "The Farewell" is set to be released in Japan in the near future. Worldwide coronavirus cases reach 1 million, doubling in a week as death toll tops 50,000 - CNBC Posted: 02 Apr 2020 09:27 PM PDT Reported COVID-19 cases around the world surpassed 1 million on Thursday, doubling in a week as the virus spreads across Europe and North America and establishes a toehold in Africa. Just before global cases reached 1 million, the COVID-19 worldwide death toll passed 50,000, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. COVID-19 has now infected at least 1,002,159 people around the world and killed at least 51,484 people, according to Hopkins data. Nearly 200,000 people have recovered from the virus so far, according to Hopkins. The world knew almost nothing about the virus in December, when reports of a new coronavirus started to surface in Wuhan, China. Since then, it has spread to nearly every country in the world, disrupting daily life for millions under lockdown measures meant to curb the virus' rapid spread. "Over the past five weeks, we have witnessed a near exponential growth in the number of new cases, reaching almost every country, territory and area," World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a news briefing at the organization's Geneva headquarters Wednesday. Confirmed COVID-19 cases topped 500,000 a week ago, according to Hopkins. Since then, the U.S. surpassed China as the country with the most reported cases of COVID-19 in the world. However, economists and U.S. officials have said Chinese officials are likely underreporting the number of infections. Infections in the U.S. now account for more than 20% of infections globally. The virus has infected more than 92,000 people in New York state alone, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday. White House officials estimate that between 100,000 to 240,000 people in the U.S. will die from COVID-19 with the peak in fatalities over the next two or so weeks. The virus threatens to spread widely across Africa, where a number of countries have seen hundreds of positive tests, according to Hopkins. The virus has infected more than 1,300 people in South Africa, according to Hopkins data, and more than 900 in Algeria. The WHO has repeatedly emphasized the potentially devastating impact of epidemics across Africa, where many health systems are ill-equipped to care for what could be an overwhelming number of critical patients. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 09:12 PM PDT With the Covid-19 situation still devastating the world, there is legitimate concern that the Premier League, and other major European leagues, will be cancelled should the ongoing pandemic continue for several more months. While UEFA are working hard to attempt to conclude the current 2019-20 season as long as it is seemed safe to do so, should plans fail, there is a possibility that the Premier League could be cancelled or deemed null and void. In the worst case scenario, what happens to players' goals and appearances? Would goal records and appearances still count if the Premier League is declared null and void?It is very likely that all records - such as goals, assists and appearances - from the 2019-20 season will be expunged should the current Premier League season be cancelled. To declare a season null and void is to say that nothing from that campaign is to be counted officially, and that everything that happened during its course is wiped away. Likewise, if the Premier League were to be declared void, Liverpool would not be crowned champions, and the 2019-20 season would be scrubbed from history, with the season restarted for 2020-21. If the Premier League were to be cancelled but not declared void, however, with the most recent standings declared final - such as who will be named champions and who would be relegated - goals and appearances should still count towards the record books. Should the season be cancelled as well as deemed null and void, Liverpool would obviously be hit the hardest. They would be denied their first ever Premier League trophy despite sitting a whopping 25 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, with all the monumental records they have broken this season erased. The Reds also equalled Manchester City's record 18-match Premier League winning streak, and surpassed City's achievement of 20 consecutive home victories (taking their record to 22 games, following the win against Bournemouth). Currently, Liverpool's 25-point lead gap is the largest between first and second place in the Premier League. Leicester forward Jamie Vardy, who still leads the Premier League goalscoring charts with 19 goals as of March 9, 2020, would unfortunately see his goals scrubbed off. The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero - who follow close behind - would also have their goal tallies erased. The blistering statement came a day after Bloomberg, citing three U.S. officials, reported that a classified U.S. intelligence report concluded that China's public tally of COVID-19 infections and deaths is purposefully incomplete. In a statement to CNBC, the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., said that Beijing "has fully honored its obligation of notification prescribed by the International Health Regulations, and has been updating the statistics of its confirmed and death cases in an open, transparent and responsible manner." "The Chinese government has, out of a strong sense of responsibility for its people's health, taken the most comprehensive and stringent measures to fight the pandemic," the statement said. "Slandering and shifting blame cannot help make up for the lost time," the embassy added, "nor can they conceal some people's incompetence in the containment efforts or their despicable attempt to put political interests above human life." "In this fight, countries are all interconnected, and they can only prevail by solidarity and stronger cooperation," the embassy said. President Donald Trump was asked Wednesday at a White House press briefing whether he had received an intelligence report describing any discrepancies in China's numbers. "We have not received" any such reports, Trump said. But he noted that China's tally appeared "to be a little bit on the light side, and I'm being nice when I say that, relative to what we witnessed and what was reported." Trump has previously cast doubt on China's numbers. But he said at the briefing Wednesday evening that "we really don't know" if China "underreported or reported however they report." The coronavirus pandemic began around the city of Wuhan in China's Hubei province — though Beijing's foreign ministry has claimed that it didn't necessarily originate there. China has reported 82,432 coronavirus cases, data from Johns Hopkins University show. That number is less than half of the total cases confirmed in the United States, which has become the country with the highest number of reported infections in the world. More than 217,000 COVID-19 cases have so far been confirmed in the U.S. While the disease in recent weeks has spread exponentially around the world — especially in parts of the U.S. and Europe — China's numbers have flattened. China attributes its apparent success in "flattening the curve" of coronavirus growth to the "comprehensive and stringent measures" it has put in place to fight the pandemic. Those extreme steps reportedly included forcibly holding Wuhan residents in pop-up hospitals, conducting door-to-door health checks and requiring that citizens who showed any symptoms be immediately quarantined. The total lockdown of daily life seems to have worked, according to China's numbers. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:24 PM PDT Fortnite creator Epic has revealed a new mobile game developed in collaboration with J.J. Abrams' game development company Bad Robot Games, a spinoff of his production studio Bad Robot that was formed back in 2018 with funding from Epic investor Tencent. Abrams previously collaborated with Epic to debut a trailer of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker within Fortnite. The title, called Spyjinx, is an espionage and secret agent-themed action adventure game that appears to let you build your own hideout, level up your character, and compete in some form of online multiplayer to take on other players. It looks like it borrows heavily from the art style of Fortnite, specifically the recent second season of Fortnite Chapter 2 that also happens to be espionage and secret agent-themed. There's not a ton of other information about Spyjinx beyond the brief description of its theme and some screenshots the companies shared. But Epic said yesterday it would be launching a beta test in Malaysia on iOS, with Australia to follow soon after. "Set in a secret world of espionage, thrilling heists, and high-tech gadgets, Spyjinx is a unique mix of action-strategy gameplay, RPG character development, and head-to-head multiplayer. Your goal? Become the ultimate spy Mastermind," reads the game description. What Is Fluffy Coffee, and Why? - The Cut Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:27 PM PDT You mean to tell me that people are fluffing their coffee? Photo: YouTube If you've found yourself endlessly scrolling through any social-media platform in the past few weeks, you've likely come across a precious two-tone beverage served in a transparent glass that looks like something an anime fairy would drink. The bottom is unmistakably some sort of milk, but the light-brown top layer is more perplexing. In some photos, it resembles a soft peak of Swiss meringue; in others, the top of a Wendy's Frosty. And, over the past month, the alluring bev has become increasingly inescapable. The drink, which bears the cutesy name "fluffy coffee," is actually quite simple: To create it, you vigorously whisk instant-coffee powder with hot water and sugar until it becomes frothy, and then plop it atop cold milk, voilà. And it is, truly, everywhere. Every proud "foodie" worth their salt has tackled the drink on their food blogs and vlogs, painstakingly reviewing the drink's tasting notes and uploading their own recipes. It's all over Instagram and TikTok. So viral has it gone that even BuzzFeed Video has whipped up the beverage. "I think, more than anything, it's a drink that's a really fun distraction for specifically right now," Los Angeles Times cooking columnist Ben Mims, who meticulously documented himself making the drink on Instagram, told the Cut. "It uses an ingredient that everyone already has in their pantry, either by accident or on purpose, and manipulates it to create this frivolous fluff that makes you feel like you created magic." The trend originated in South Korea. As early as February, YouTubers like 뚤기ddulgi were posting incredibly soothing, ASMR-esque videos of themselves whisking the iced drink. Some of these have amassed over 4 million views each. In these videos, the drink bears the name "dalgona coffee," which pays tribute to South Korea's popular honeycomb candy of the same name. So why are we all losing it over this one? First of all, it's just very cute! It has mass appeal, it's relatively easy to prepare, and it's photogenic. It also doesn't hurt that it emerged at a time when all our neighborhood coffee shops have locked their doors amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has consequently inspired some of us to pursue our dreams of being at-home baristas. Just one question, and I mean absolutely no offense to all you fluffy-coffee-makers: You people know you can just brew coffee like a normal person, right? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:26 PM PDT "Today at my direction the commanding officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, Captain Brett Crozier, was relieved of command by carrier strike group commander Rear Admiral Stewart Baker," Modly said during a Pentagon press briefing. Modly told reporters that Crozier was removed for showing "extremely poor judgment" and creating a "firestorm" by too widely disseminating the memo detailing his concerns, copying some 20 to 30 people. He said Crozier was not removed because of any evidence suggesting he leaked the memo to the press, but rather for allowing "the complexity of his challenge with the Covid breakout on the ship to overwhelm his ability to act professionally when acting professionally was what was needed the most at the time." "I have no information nor am I trying to suggest that he leaked the information. It was published in the San Francisco Chronicle. It all came as a big surprise to all of us that it was in the paper, and that's the first time I had seen it," he added. The information in question was contained in a memo written by Crozier earlier this week to the Navy's Pacific Fleet. Modly called Crozier's note "a blast-out email to everyone he knows." "We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our Sailors," it read, three US defense officials confirmed to CNN. Modly said Crozier was relieved because he went outside the chain of command and sent his memo over an unsecured system, adding to the chances it could be leaked. "He sent it out pretty broadly, and in sending it out broadly he did not take care to ensure that it couldn't be leaked, and that's part of his responsibility, in my opinion," Modly said. "I have received absolutely no pressure. I have had no communication with the White House about this," he added. "I did, when I was arriving closer to this determination yesterday, I called Secretary Esper and told him that this was the direction I was heading and he told me he would support my decision whatever that might be." Top Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee slammed the move in a statement Thursday. "While Captain Crozier clearly went outside the chain of command, his dismissal at this critical moment -- as the Sailors aboard the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt are confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic -- is a destabilizing move that will likely put our service members at greater risk and jeopardize our fleet's readiness," they said. "The COVID pandemic presents a set of new challenges and there is much we still do not know. Captain Crozier was justifiably concerned about the health and safety of his crew, but he did not handle the immense pressure appropriately. However, relieving him of his command is an overreaction," the lawmakers added. Number of positive cases continues to increaseNews of Crozier's removal comes after a US defense official told CNN earlier Thursday that 114 sailors from the USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for the virus, representing more than 10% of all cases across the US military. The outbreak on the ship is escalating rapidly. Last week the Pentagon confirmed three sailors on the Roosevelt had tested positive, and that number had risen to 25 two days later. It rose to at least 70 on Tuesday and more than 100 on Thursday. On Monday, a US defense official told CNN that a second US aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, is facing a "handful" of positive cases. In his memo, Crozier implored Navy leaders to take immediate steps to address the situation. "Decisive action is required. Removing the majority of personnel from a deployed US nuclear aircraft carrier and isolating them for two weeks may seem like an extraordinary measure," his memo said. "This is a necessary risk. It will enable the carrier and air wing to get back underway as quickly as possible while ensuring the health and safety of our Sailors. Keeping over 4,000 young men and women on board the TR is an unnecessary risk and breaks faith with those Sailors entrusted to our care," Crozier added. Modly said Wednesday that if it turned out the letter was leaked it "would violate the principles of good order and discipline if -- if -- if he were responsible for that. But, I don't know that. The fact that he wrote the letter of -- to his chain of command to express his concerns would absolutely not result in any type of retaliation. This is what we want our commanding officers to be able to do." On Thursday, Modly asserted that the decision to remove Crozier from his post "is not one about retribution, it's about confidence. It is not an indictment of character, but rather of judgment." "While I do take issue with the validity of some of the points in Captain Crozier's letter, he was absolutely correct in raising them," he said. "It was the way in which he did it ... that was unacceptable to me," the acting Navy secretary added. Sailors quarantinedCNN previously reported that some of the sailors from the USS Theodore Roosevelt will be quarantined in hotel rooms in Guam as the number of coronavirus cases aboard the carrier continues to increase. On Wednesday Modly said 1,273 of the ship's roughly 4,800 crew members have been tested for the virus so far and the Navy was still awaiting the results of some of those tests. He said about 1,000 sailors have been evacuated from the ship and moved ashore to Guam where the ship is currently in port. "We already have nearly 1,000 personnel off the ship right now. And in the next couple of days we expect to have 2,700 of them off the ship," Modly told reporters at the Pentagon. Some sailors will have to remain on the ship. The Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Mike Gilday, said that the ship could not be evacuated in its entirety due to the need to continue to perform essential tasks such as the operation of the aircraft carrier's nuclear reactor. He said that about 1,000 sailors would have to remain on the ship to perform, about 500 more than was proposed by Crozier in his recent memo. "This ship has weapons on it, it has munitions on it, it has expensive aircraft, it has a nuclear power plant. It requires a certain amount of people on that ship to maintain the safety and security of the ship," Modly said. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT WASHINGTON – The Navy fired the captain of the USS Theodore Roosevelt on Thursday, four days after he pleaded for help as the coronavirus ravaged his crew, the Navy announced. Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly announced that Navy Capt. Brett Crozier was relieved for loss of confidence. "I just know that he exercised extremely poor judgment," Modly said. Crozier had sent an urgent letter to the U.S. Navy on Sunday, seeking to evacuate and isolate the crew as cases of coronavirus infection increased on the vessel. "Decisive action" was required to prevent deaths from the coronavirus, Crozier wrote. The ship's close quarters prevented sailors from following guidelines to keep them safe. Modly said Thursday that the Navy had been speeding help to the Roosevelt before Crozier had sent his letter. Democrats who lead the House Armed Services committee blasted Modly for firing Crozier. The lawmakers acknowledged Crozier improperly went outside the chain of command in releasing his letter, but they called his dismissal an overreaction. "Throwing the commanding officer overboard without a thorough investigation is not going to solve the growing crisis aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt," the Democrats, led by Rep. Adam Smith, D- Wash., and chairman of the committee, said in a statement. "What's more, we are very concerned about the chilling effect this dismissal will have on commanders throughout the Department of Defense. Dismissing a commanding officer for speaking out on issues critical to the safety of those under their command discourages others from raising similar concerns." Roosevelt cases: Navy says it can't empty ship because of weapons, nuclear reactor By Wednesday the Navy had evacuated about 1,000 sailors from the nuclear-powered ship, which is docked at Guam. About one-quarter of the 4,800 member crew had been tested for the virus, and 93 had been found to have COVID-19. None were seriously ill, according the Navy. At a Pentagon briefing Wednesday, Navy officials chose their words carefully when discussing Crozier. But the letter's publication by the San Francisco Chronicle caught the Navy by surprise, and officials scrambled to show they were responding to concerns about sailors' health. The letter was sent out broadly via email on an insecure network and copied to "20 or 30 other people," Modly said Thursday. Modly and other Navy officials had not seen it until it appeared in the paper. "He did not safeguard that information," Modly said. The letter created a degree of "panic" on ship, Modly said. 'Sailors do not need to die': A timeline of coronavirus spread on the Roosevelt "Navy leadership today cost itself tremendous credibility when it could least afford it," said Rep. Jackie Speier, chair of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee. "Rather than stand with a brave leader who raised legitimate concerns about an imminent, serious threat, the Navy's leaders prioritized their own appearances over their sailors' lives. The Personnel Subcommittee, which I chair, will investigate this blatant act of whistleblower retaliation." As of late Thursday, 114 sailors have tested positively for the virus, Modly said. And he expects "hundreds more" to be infected. There are 3,000 beds available on Guam for sailors who fall ill, Modly said, and those measures were underway before the letter was made public. Adm. Michael Gilday, the chief of naval operations, appeared with Modly at the hastily called briefing at the Pentagon late Thursday. Gilday said he supported the decision to relieve Crozier, and that an investigation is underway about the letter and how it was distributed. "Our sailors deserve the best leadership we can absolutely supply," Gilday said. Modly said he informed Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Wednesday that he was leaning toward firing Crozier. At no time, Modly said, did White House officials try to influence his decision. "We expect more from our commanding officers than what they train for," Modly said. Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Nicholas Huynh | US Navy WASHINGTON — An aircraft carrier captain who made a stunning plea for help over a coronavirus outbreak on his vessel has been relieved of duty. The officer, Capt. Brett Crozier of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, had written a letter to military leadership regarding the situation on his carrier, and it leaked to the media. "The captain's actions made his sailors, their families, and many in the public believe that his letter was the only reason help from our larger Navy family was forthcoming, which was hardly the case," Thomas Modly, acting Secretary of the Navy, told reporters Thursday at the Pentagon. "It raised alarm bells unnecessarily," he added, saying that the Navy was making preparations to address the concerns laid out in the letter. Modly said that the captain's letter, dated March 30, was sent via nonsecure unclassified email and also outside the chain of command. In a four-page letter, first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Crozier described a worsening coronavirus outbreak aboard the warship, a temporary home to more than 4,000 crew members. More than 100 people on the ship were infected. "We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our Sailors," Crozier wrote. "The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating." The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt transits the Pacific Ocean while conducting training off the coast of California. Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Paul Archer | U.S. Navy The latest revelation of the coronavirus exposure aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is currently docked in Guam, follows a recently completed port call to Da Nang, Vietnam. Fifteen days after leaving Vietnam, three sailors from the USS Theodore Roosevelt tested positive for the virus. The infections were the first reports of coronavirus on a vessel at sea. Last week, Modly told reporters at the Pentagon that the trio of sailors and those who had been in contact with the individuals were identified and quarantined. And while port calls for U.S. Navy ships have since been canceled, Modly defended the decision to complete the port call by saying that at the time, the coronavirus cases in Vietnam were less than 100. Artis—Naples cancels entire spring season - Naples Daily News Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:05 PM PDT Artis—Naples cancels entire spring season - Naples Daily News There will be no performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, no jazzy trumpet concert from Chris Botti, no performance of the musical, "A Bronx Tale." Artis—Naples on Thursday afternoon announced the cancellation of the rest of its season, which included those three events and nearly 30 more performances, exhibitions and lectures. It had already cancelled all programming from March 12 to April 13 out of concern over the growing number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Southwest Florida and the known infectiousness of the disease. A news release from the venue called it a "difficult decision." But in view of the coronavirus dangers, its administration, said the release, felt the cancellations were "in the best interest of our patrons, musicians, team members, visiting artists and our wider community." The decision means Artis—Naples will have lost nearly 80 performances, events, lectures and exhibitions among its three internal venues: Hayes Hall, the Daniels Pavilion and The Baker Museum since March 12. It is an especially painful decision for three facets of the performing arts venue's operation. The Baker Museum had only re-opened in late November. It had been closed since September 2017 from water damage by Hurricane Irma and a consequent reconfiguring to add a tier of conference and performance areas. Those were originally scheduled to open this spring. The opening of the museum's addition, with its floors available for classes, conference, banquets and performances, may be further delayed. If the orders for non-essential businesses to close includes contractors, that would halt any work yet to be done on the addition. The performance of the Beethoven Symphony No. 9, a major concert that was scheduled for three performances with two different choruses, soloists and the Naples Philharmonic, would be a sizeable loss to the season. But it was also to be the official farewell concert for James Cochran, founding director of the chorus, and his associate directors, Brice Gerlach and Michele Byrd. Cochran worked with then-executive director Myra Janco Daniels to form the Naples Philharmonic Chorus in 1991. No Artis—Naples officials were available to say whether that concert could be rescheduled at another time. The news release said administrative offices would send communication "soon on options for patrons holding tickets for any of those events." The long-awaited Tom Cruise Skydance sequel Top Gun Maverick is now going on Wednesday December 23, 2020, instead of June 24. This will push the Chris Pratt sci-fi Skydance movie The Tomorrow War to an unset date. The new date for Top Gun Maverick gives the holiday a great must-see movie, in the absence of a Star Wars or superhero movie like Aquaman. Top Gun 2 will face Christmas Day weekend releases Tom & Jerry from Warner Bros, Sony's Fanning sisters WWII drama The Nightingale, DreamWorks Animation/Uni's The Croods 2, and Universal's News of the World. Preceding Top Gun 2 on December 18 is 20th/Disney's West Side Story, Lionsgate's American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, Warner Bros/Legendary's Dune, and Paramount's Coming to America 2. Related StoryWhat Sony's Seismic Schedule Changes Of 'Morbius', 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' & More Actually MeansThe SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will debut July 31, instead of on Memorial Day weekend, May 22. The move puts an event film on that release date after Sony/Marvel's Morbius left for March 19, 2021. A Quiet Place Part II, which was originally expected to go March 20 before getting pulled from the calendar as COVID-19 fears ramped up, will now open on September 4. Labor Day weekend, summer B.O.'s finale, is typically the deadest period ever for moviegoing as people head back to school, but with studios and theaters betting that moviegoing explodes later this summer than sooner, with Wonder Woman 1984 on August 14, look for A Quiet Place Part II to redefine the Labor Day frame much like Warner Bros transformed the post-Labor Day period with Stephen King's It. A Quiet Place Part II pushes up against New Line's September 11 release The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Will that horror sequel stay or go? Typically genre movies space themselves out on the release calendar. The changes unveiled Thursday cuts far deeper into the summer calendar with an unexpected date as to when exhibition will reopen on full blast. AMC is hoping to re-open its circuit in early June. New York City, a major moviegoing market, remains besieged with more than 45,000 COVID-19 cases, repping more than half the entire state. In an effort to have tentpoles earning their maximum, a film will need New York and Los Angeles online as they rep a great percentage of a pic's weekend ticket sales. And of course, these movies will need the world's theaters. What will theaters do for product if this crisis clears up earlier? I'm told many titles are flexible for all studios, and can always be pulled up to an earlier opening should the nation's marketplace improve. Also, most of these titles remain in post-production. Many are expecting that when theaters do re-open, it will take some time for audiences to come back. Winter holdover titles and catalog movies are expected to be on marquees. As we've also written, for movies to come back, live televised sporting events also have to return as well as the major studios hit their male demos with ads during that time. So, what remains on the schedule? With all theaters closed, DreamWorks Animation's Trolls World Tour is expected to be largely available for on-demand rental next weekend. STX has yet to re-date family comedy My Spy; the Dave Bautista movie already has cleared about $200,000 from a one-week Canada release. The rest of summer is currently dated as follows in regards to wide releases, of course, subject to change: May 29 Artemis Fowl (Disney) June 12 Candyman (Uni) – June 12 June 19 Soul (Dis) Fatale (LG) The King of Staten Island (Uni) July 3 Free Guy (20th/Dis) July 10 Untitled Purge (Uni) July 17 Bob's Burgers (20th/Dis) Tenet (WB) July 24 Jungle Cruise (Dis) Come Play (Focus) July 31 SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run (Par) Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar (LG) August 7 Empty Man (20th/Dis) Infinite (Par) August 14 Wonder Woman 1984 (WB) The One and Only Ivan (Dis) Nobody (Uni) August 21 Let Him Go (Foc) Bill & Ted Face the Music (UAR) Untitled Fred Hampton project (WB) August 28 Hitman's Bodyguard Part 2 (LG) Spell (Par) Sept 4 – Labor Day weekend The Beatles: Get Back (Dis) Monster Hunter (Sony) A Quiet Place Part II (Par) 2020-04-02 16:59:46Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMikgFodHRwczovL2RlYWRsaW5lLmNvbS8yMDIwLzA0L3RvcC1ndW4tbWF2ZXJpY2stZmxpZXMtdG8tY2hyaXN0bWFzLWNvcnJpZG9yLXNwb25nZWJvYi1leWVzLWxhdGUtc3VtbWVyLXF1aWV0LXBsYWNlLWlpLXRvLWRlYnV0LWxhYm9yLWRheS0xMjAyODk4NzM4L9IBlgFodHRwczovL2RlYWRsaW5lLmNvbS8yMDIwLzA0L3RvcC1ndW4tbWF2ZXJpY2stZmxpZXMtdG8tY2hyaXN0bWFzLWNvcnJpZG9yLXNwb25nZWJvYi1leWVzLWxhdGUtc3VtbWVyLXF1aWV0LXBsYWNlLWlpLXRvLWRlYnV0LWxhYm9yLWRheS0xMjAyODk4NzM4L2FtcC8?oc=5 |
Disney+ beat Netflix in recent US downloads (report) - TechCrunch Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:05 PM PDT Disney+ beat Netflix in recent US downloads (report) - TechCrunch Netflix may still dominate global streaming, but Disney+ has made a huge splash in the United States, where it launched in November. That much was pretty clear already, and other reports have already suggested that Disney+ was the most downloaded app and biggest search trend in the United States last year. Now a new report from mobile intelligence company Apptopia and customer engagement platform Braze suggests that Disney's streaming service has continued its spectacular success into 2020. The report examines the months leading up to and after the service's U.S. launch, and it includes charts of the most popular streaming apps for the first three months of 2020. According to those charts, Netflix was the most downloaded streaming app globally, with 59.1 million downloads, followed by YouTube at 39.4 million. Disney+ (which is currently launching across Europe and India) was number seven on the list, with 17.5 million downloads. In the United States however, Disney+ leads with 14.1 million downloads, versus 11.9 million for Netflix (which may have already saturated the U.S. market) and 8.1 million for Hulu (which is also owned primarily by Disney). Lest you think this is purely a one-on-one contest between Netflix and Disney, it's also worth noting that neither of them wins on time spent in-app — instead, it's YouTube Kids that wins in both the United States and globally. And yes, the COVID-19 pandemic is leading to even more streaming, with the report showing a 30.7% increase in streaming sessions in March The report suggests that the success of Disney+ means that there's still room for new streaming services. (It might, however, simply reflect Disney's dominance of the entertainment world. It remains to be seen whether Quibi, NBCUniversal's Peacock and WarnerMedia's HBO Max can achieve similar success as they launch in the coming months.) The report also looks at strategies that successfully drive engagement, as measured by daily active users. It points out that the most popular brands are 21% more likely to send push notifications and 300% more likely to send in-app messages. It also concludes that "content that creates fandom is king":

Tiger King star Joe Exotic caged in quarantine as coronavirus roars - Washington Examiner Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:05 PM PDT Tiger King star Joe Exotic caged in quarantine as coronavirus roars - Washington Examiner Joe Exotic, the star of Netflix's new hit show Tiger King, earned a cage of his own after potentially contracting the coronavirus. The zookeeper, who rose to fame for his eccentric love of big cats and the plotting of a murder-for-hire plot against a Florida woman, has been quarantined in prison over fears that he could be infected with the coronavirus, according to his husband, Dillon Passage. Passage told talk show host Andy Cohen this week that Exotic, whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, was placed into isolation at the FMC Fort Worth federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas, after he was moved from a prison where several inmates tested positive for the infectious disease. "We speak three to five times every day," Passage said. "But since he's been moved to this new facility, they are putting him on a COVID-19 isolation because of the previous jail he was at — there were cases. So, I have yet to speak to him since he's been moved." Exotic has become a household name as many people binge-watched the series while being stuck at home due to "shelter-in-place" orders meant to stem to spread of the COVID-19 virus. According to statistics compiled by Google, Exotic's name trended higher than Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden in the past week. [Click here for complete coronavirus coverage] Exotic is serving 22 years for in prison after he was found guilty on April 2, 2019, on two counts of murder-for-hire, nine violations of the Endangered Species Act, and eight violations of the Lacey Act, which prohibits the sale and transfer of species and plants that have been illegally obtained. The breeder maintained his innocence in a January Facebook post and said his attorneys were filing an appeal. Tiger King, released on March 20, followed his contentious relationship with Carol Baskin, an animal rights activist who repeatedly attempted to shut down Exotic's Oklahoma big cat zoo. 2020-04-02 15:34:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMia2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lndhc2hpbmd0b25leGFtaW5lci5jb20vbmV3cy90aWdlci1raW5nLXN0YXItam9lLWV4b3RpYy1jYWdlZC1pbi1xdWFyYW50aW5lLWFzLWNvcm9uYXZpcnVzLXJvYXJz0gF1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud2FzaGluZ3RvbmV4YW1pbmVyLmNvbS9uZXdzL3RpZ2VyLWtpbmctc3Rhci1qb2UtZXhvdGljLWNhZ2VkLWluLXF1YXJhbnRpbmUtYXMtY29yb25hdmlydXMtcm9hcnM_X2FtcD10cnVl?oc=5 |
