Coronavirus: Fake and misleading stories that went viral this week - BBC News Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:27 PM PDT We've all been there. A coronavirus post that could be true and sounds about right, but how do we know it's accurate? To help, the BBC's disinformation-monitoring team is fact-checking and verifying some of the most widely shared fake and misleading stories of the week. Was Brooklyn rapping along to The Notorious B.I.G.?Residents of Brooklyn, in New York City, rapping in unison to one of The Notorious B.I.G.'s biggest hits during lockdown sounds plausible, doesn't it? A video claiming exactly that has been shared thousands of times and clocked-up more than one million views in a few days. The video, shot from a tall building somewhere in New York, scans across apartment buildings that are apparently blaring out the song Juicy by deceased Brooklyn rapper Biggie. However, the posts are fake. We know this because we found that, tipped off by a comment on one of the posts, the recording appears to be a match for a video from a Jay-Z concert in 2010. We also pinpointed the video to Manhattan not Brooklyn - probably the Upper West Side. So the video does not show a mass singalong that, if you read the comments, gave people "goose bumps". That's not a 5G antennaA video claiming to show people in China tearing down a 5G mobile antenna was shared on social media and has generated thousands of views. Actor Woody Harrelson, who has two million Instagram followers, posted the video, saying: "Meanwhile the Chinese are bringing 5g antennas down." The video is genuine but it's old and shows protesters in Hong Kong in August 2019 tearing down what was reported to be a "smart lamppost" equipped to collect data. 5G is the latest high-speed mobile broadband technology which requires new antenna masts to be installed to maintain the network. The video was shared as false rumours about a link between 5G and coronavirus spread on social media. Your mate's tip-off about steam? Ignore itPosts claiming that inhaling steam has helped coronavirus patients' recovery have been spreading across social media this week. One example has been shared more than 40,000 times. It appears to come from a Facebook user in Durham, who wrote that he heard "first hand that a doctor who had Corona virus recovered in double quick time" after inhaling steam. A similar message has taken different forms - coming from someone's "sister in London", "Queens NY" and "a sister from Pakistan". There's no evidence that steam inhalation works as a treatment for coronavirus. This advice is also potentially harmful. High-temperature steam-cleaning of surfaces in hospitals and elsewhere does destroy the coronavirus (as well as other types of viruses) says Prof Keith Neal, a specialist in the study of the spread of infectious diseases at the University of Nottingham. However, any attempt to inhale steam at this temperature, would be extremely dangerous and risk burns. Your body's cooling system would kick in to limit the rise in temperature, says Prof Neal, and your lungs would certainly be irreparably damaged before reaching a temperature high enough to deactivate the virus. Croatian earthquake survivors not Italian patientsPosts with images of hospital beds and patients being treated on the streets are going viral on social media with the claim that hospitals in Italy have run out of space due to the spread of coronavirus. The images being shared are genuine, but they are not from Italy. A reverse image search reveals they were taken in the Croatian capital, Zagreb, after it was hit by an earthquake on 22 March. The most widely shared post seems to have originated in India just as the government there imposed a nationwide lockdown on 25 March. It has been shared more than 17,000 times and is now being posted by users outside India. Indian journalist Rajat Sharma, also tweeted the images with the misleading claim. He deleted the post within a few hours but it had already been retweeted more than 6,000 times. Baking-soda remedies in RussiaA Russian scientist has said that a man-made bacterium has somehow merged with the new coronavirus and is the reason people are dying - and recommends baking soda to treat it. The interview appeared on a popular Russian YouTube channel and has had more than four million views. But there's no evidence to support this - the disease Covid-19 is caused by the coronavirus alone. It's also not the case that baking soda can help if you are infected with coronavirus, or prevent infection from it. Irene Ken did not approve this messageSome misleading online posts are difficult to spot because they contain both good and bad medical advice. You can be drawn in by the good from what appears to be a reputable source and then can be caught off guard when bad advice is thrown into the mix. A good example of this is a message attributed to Johns Hopkins University in the US. It has been widely shared in various forms, sometimes attributed to a medical expert, Irene Ken, suggesting ways to avoid the "contagion". There is some sensible advice in there, such as washing your hands or that vodka is not a strong enough alcohol to kill the virus. Other parts of it, however, are inaccurate - among them that Listerine, a brand of mouthwash, is 65% alcohol (it's much less than that). The Johns Hopkins University says it had nothing to do with any of these posts. Additional reporting by Marianna Spring, Shruti Menon, Olga Robinson, Shayan Sardarizadeh and Alistair Coleman. FIFA Covid-19 working group proposes June international window postponements - Goal Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:42 PM PDT FIFA's Covid-19 working group has recommended the postponement of all international matches due to be played in the June window. The working group, which the world game's governing body recently established to address the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, met for the first time via conference call on Friday. They made a series of recommendations to the Bureau of the FIFA Council including the postponement of all men's and women's international fixtures for June. All measures received unanimous agreement from the panel, including setting up "bilateral discussions with confederations concerning 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers" with the aim of finalising "a revised match schedule pending health and safety developments." "FIFA would like to thank the positive contributions and cooperation of all Confederations' representatives and highlight the spirit of unity, solidarity and mutual understanding which culminated in the adoption of these decisions," read the organisation's statement. "FIFA also reiterates that health must always be the first priority and the main criteria in any decision-making process, especially in these challenging times." Following the group's recommendation, Concacaf announced it would be postponing its Nations League semi-final and final, with the United States scheduled to face Honduras and Mexico set to take on Costa Rica. Friendlies scheduled for June will also likely be off, including Spain taking on Portugal, Germany travelling to Switzerland and England hosting Romania. The working group also recommended the postponement of the 2020 Under-20 Women's World Cup in Panama and Costa Rica, originally scheduled for August and September, as well as the 2020 U17 Women's World Cup in India, which was originally scheduled for November. Additionally, the working group recommended keeping age eligibility criteria for the men's Olympic football tournament, which has been postponed from 2020 to 2021. That decision would mean players born on or after January 1, 1997 would still be eligible to participate in the rescheduled Olympics, despite the tournament usually being a U23 event. Copa America and Euro 2020, both previously due to start in June, have already been postponed for one year. Earlier on Friday, the Premier League announced that after previously targeting a return on April 30, play will not resume by that date and matches will be suspended indefinitely. Married for 51 years, they died of Covid-19 six minutes apart - KPRC Click2Houston Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:56 PM PDT (CNN) – Before just a few weeks ago, Stuart and Adrian Baker were perfectly healthy. The inseparable couple had been married for more than 51 years and were living in Boynton Beach, Florida, in retirement. Neither of them had any serious health conditions. Then in mid-March, they started feeling ill. On Sunday, they both died — six minutes apart — due to complications from Covid-19, their son Buddy Baker said. Stuart Baker was 74. Adrian Baker was 72. Buddy Baker, a longtime NFL agent, has been speaking publicly about the loss of his parents, using his family's tragedy to reiterate the seriousness of the global coronavirus pandemic. In a widely shared video on Twitter, he urged people to heed social distancing and stay-at-home recommendations from public health officials. "Until it touches you or touches somebody you know or you hear a story, you kind of feel removed from it," Baker, president and CEO of Exclusive Sports Group, told CNN. "... Hopefully my parents' passing doesn't go in vain." At first, the family was optimistic Baker detailed the events leading up to his parents' passing in a phone interview with CNN. About three weeks ago, Stuart and Adrian went to the doctor after they weren't feeling well, according to Baker. They were eventually sent home. A few days later, their symptoms still hadn't improved so their doctor recommended that they visit the hospital. Baker said that they were also sent home from the hospital and told to self-quarantine until they felt better. "This is pre- the world shutting down, pre- the NCAA tournament getting canceled, so you're still not thinking this is going to be something which is life threatening," he said. Baker said he'd call to check on his parents regularly, but their health didn't seem to be improving. One day, they seemed to be on the up, and then the next day, they'd be feeling worse again. After a few more days, on March 19, they were told to return to the hospital. Baker's father, who had a fever and also had asthma, was admitted. His mother, who did not have a fever, was not. Despite the circumstances, Baker said he and his family were optimistic. They were talking to Stuart regularly on his phone, and it seemed like he'd be able to push through. About 48 hours later, his father was admitted to the ICU -- but the family was still hopeful. Stuart went from being on 60% oxygen to 50%, a sign that things were going in the right direction. Then, the couple started to deteriorate Meanwhile, Baker's mother was at home. Though she didn't have a fever or other worrying symptoms, knowing that her husband was in the hospital was taking a serious toll on her mentally. "We just thought that was the result of my dad being away from her for the last five days, which was very very very infrequent in their lives together," Baker said. Baker said he and his sister would visit their mother a few times a day, sitting outside the garage while their mom sat inside. Then on March 24, they got a call from the hospital. Their father had tested positive for Covid-19 and the doctor said it didn't look like he would make it. The call was shattering, Baker said. They didn't want to upset their mother with the news, and decided to take her to the hospital as a precautionary measure. They wanted to see if she too could be tested, though because she had no fever or other related symptoms, they thought she would be fine. Within 45 minutes of their mother being checked in, Baker said the doctor called to report that her oxygen levels were very low. She wouldn't make it either. With their parents' organs failing, Baker said he and his sister decided to move their parents to hospice care at the counsel of medical professionals. His mother and father were both moved to the same room and taken off ventilators to be comfortable. Within minutes of each other, they had passed. "They were as compatible and inseparable as two human beings have ever been married and existed on earth," Baker said. Baker's message for others On Thursday, Baker, his three children and his sister's family gathered for his parents' memorial service in Boynton Beach. The service was live-streamed for other friends and relatives and watched by people all over the world, he said. "Hopefully people hear our story and it motivates them to do the right thing," he said. "By doing that, maybe it won't affect them or it won't affect their family but maybe they help another family not endure the pain and agony that me and my sister and our kids and the rest of our family are enduring right now." Baker said he hopes his family's story can be a catalyst for change. He's calling on people to listen to what health officials have been saying: practice social distancing, wash their hands regularly and most importantly, stay at home. Indonesia reports highest daily rise in COVID-19 cases - Yeni Şafak English Posted: 03 Apr 2020 08:56 PM PDT Indonesia on Friday confirmed 196 new cases of COVID-19, the biggest daily rise so far, taking the tally to 1,986. "As many as 22 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours. So far, we have recorded 134 recoveries," said Achmad Yurianto, the government's spokesman for coronavirus-related matters, at a news briefing. Meanwhile, the number of new deaths due to novel coronavirus rose by 11, bringing the death toll to 184. "I am urging everyone to reconsider if you want to go somewhere. The safest place is your home," he added. A total of 32 provinces in the country have reported COVID-19 cases. Most of them -- 971 cases -- have been identified in the capital city of Jakarta. So far, the Health Ministry has examined 7,924 specimens in 48 laboratories across the country. In addition, around 349,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for medical personnel have been distributed, and 360 referral hospitals have been prepared to treat the patients. Indonesia has confirmed its first two cases of COVID-19 on March 2. The number of confirmed cases has been rising since then. Earlier this week, President Joko Widodo has decided to implement the large-scale social restriction to contain the the spread of COVID-19. He also said that his government would not prevent people from traveling to their hometowns to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. But travelers will be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days, and they will also be put under observation. The country has allocated an additional budget of 405.1 trillion rupiah ($24.7 billion) for mitigating the spread of the virus. After first appearing in Wuhan, China in December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 181 countries and regions. Data compiled by U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University shows worldwide infections surging past 1 million (over 1,030,600), with more than 54,100 deaths. Over 218,700 people have recovered. * Writing by Maria Elisa Hospita from Anadolu Agency's Indonesian language service. Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:56 PM PDT A 56-year-old man died due to Covid-19-related illness in Dharavi slum, in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai on Wednesday. The patient, who had no travel history, died hours just after testing positive for coronavirus while being transferred to a local hospital, Kiran Dighavkar, an official with Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) told CNN. Several of the man's family members have been tested and placed under home quarantine, and the block of 300 homes and 90 shops that make up his densely packed neighborhood have been sealed off to prevent further infections. On Thursday, a 52-year-old sweeper who works for the BMC in Dharavi also tested positive for coronavirus. Home to around 1 million people, Dharavi slum has a population density almost 30 times greater than New York -- about 280,000 people per square kilometer. Doctors say the situation would be unmanageable if a sustained coronavirus outbreak spread rapidly through one of India's many slums, where there is little sanitation or running water and thousands of people live cheek by jowl -- making social distancing physically and economically impossible. This is the second coronavirus-related death reported in Mumbai's slums since the outbreak began, BMC officials confirmed with CNN. A 63-year-old man who tested positive for the virus on Tuesday was a resident of Malvani slum area and passed away later that evening. Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director of the Medanta-the Medicity hospital in Gurugram, near New Delhi, said it was vital that authorities know whether a slum has an outbreak. "Once we know that one slum has got it, and we lock it down, and we feed everybody and we keep them isolated for the next two weeks, we keep them well fed, it will work its way out. We will know the critical ones, and the ones who are mild, they can be quarantined at home, and the population at large can be monitored," Trehan said. It comes as cases in India nearly doubled in four days, with many of the new infections linked to a religious gathering in the capital New Delhi. India has identified 154 attendees from the Tableegi Jamat gathering who have tested positive cases across the country, said Luv Agarwal, senior official with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India reported more than 230 new cases on Friday -- bringing the national total to 2,547 and 62 deaths. Doctors in the country told CNN that India needed to prepare for a large-scale community transmission and it was essential that the public abide by the 21-day national lockdown that was imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week. "We are already seeing evidence of it (community transmission). How widespread it is, we don't know," said Trehan. "My fear is, is that no matter how much preparation we do, if it peaks, we will not have even a fraction of what we need, by way of beds, by way of ventilators, by way of PPEs (personal protective gear), everything." Learning the lessons from Europe and USIndia's leading doctors have been watching closely as the virus has spread rapidly around the US and Europe, overwhelming robust health care systems, as medical staff struggle to treat thousands of patients with dwindling supplies and protective gear. "This is a virus which has defied all possible predictions," said Dr. Arvind Kumar, chairman of the Center for Chest Surgery at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. "Could you have imagined patients in their dozens dying in a single hospital in the US in a day?" Kumar said that the Indian government's unprecedented decision to restrict the movement and daily life of its 1.3 billion citizens for three weeks was the best chance the country had to identify potential virus hotspots and it offered precious time to order and manufacture sorely needed protective gear and ventilators. "Two weeks down the line, our hospitals will have far more protective equipment than they had two weeks back, so it's a dynamic situation where ventilators, personal protective equipment, hazmat suits, all other ancillary facilities are being produced at mass scales and being supplied to various hospitals," he said. Doctors say they hope the lockdown will delay the peak of infections so hospitals have a fighting chance to treat incoming caseloads. "God forbid if we were to reach a situation like Europe we just would not be able to handle it," Kumar said. Dr. Om Shrivastav, director of Infectious Diseases at Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai, said his worst fear is that India only starts preparing for the crisis "after it's on our hands." According to Shrivastav, there is still time, however, as India's peak number of cases is still likely to be weeks away. "Every country that has been through their peak of this infection has had a different process, so we'll know in the coming four to eight weeks, that is the time period we should be prepared for," said Shrivastav. Already taking on board those lessons is Trehan, who runs a hospital that cared for 14 Italian tourists who tested positive for coronavirus early last month. He said they have built a wealth of data on treatment methods and commonalities of symptoms that they will share with the medical community. "We are studying the patterns in its entirety now, and we will be able to learn from what happened to these 14 because they were concentrated in one group," he said. Of the 14 they treated, all have now tested negative and most have left the facility, he said. Identifying the hotspotsWith the nation on lockdown, Trehan said it was now essential India ramped up testing. "Thats what we need to do is get samples from all over to see how far has it spread," he said. "If we don't know the hotspots, and we don't know where these pockets are, the whole county is so huge, and there are so many people, it will not be possible to take care of them." India has faced criticism for its low testing rates. The country is working at 38% of its testing capacity, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research. As of Friday, a total of 66,000 tests had been carried out. Part of the problem, Trehan said, is there is a "huge shortage" of both testing kits and the protective gear needed by those taking the samples. There are a total of 126 labs under the Indian Council of Medical Research and 51 private labs have received approval to conduct testing, according to the Health Ministry. But it's not fully clear whether they're all operating. Kumar said there are five steps the country should follow to prevent widespread transmission: Isolate the public, conduct testing, ramp up medical facilities, pump money into the economy, "and taking care of people so that they can sustain during this period," he said. Kumar also called for the launch of a mass education campaign so the public "know why, whatever is being done, why it's being done and increasing their compliance," he said. On Thursday, Modi held a video conference with several state chief ministers to discuss their approach to tackling the pandemic. He said that the goal in the coming weeks was to "ensure minimum loss of life" and instructed states to focus on "testing, tracing, isolation and quarantine." Migrant exodus a 'disaster'Threatening to derail those efforts is the tens of thousands of migrant workers who fled India's largest cities looking to return to their rural homes after the nationwide lockdown left them without jobs or pay. With no food, shelter or savings, thousands of vulnerable people are making the long journey home on foot. On Sunday, Modi urged all states to seal their borders to stop the virus being imported into rural areas. Indian doctors say the situation could turn into a humanitarian crisis if the migrants are not cared for. "This is our darkest hour," said Dr. Rajesh Parikh, Director of Medical Research and Hon. Neuropsychiatrist at Mumbai's Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre. "They build our homes, our factories, our very nation with their bare hands, and now we have forsaken them." There are fears that if the migrants traveled back to their villages and an outbreak occurred there, the limited medical facilities in rural areas would not be able to cope. "This is very serious because it may negate a huge part of the benefits of the lockdown. We should not have let it happen," Trehan said. "The sooner we can disperse this whole thing -- find the location for them to be transported and quarantined, that's the best we can do right now," he said. But it may already to be too late to prevent an outbreak. "You are stuck there away from your families, you don't know where your shelter is, you don't know where your food is, you've got children," Trehan said. "Now they are all packed together like sardines and the infection, if it is there, will spread like wildfire and then it will be impossible to control." CDC recommends people wear cloth masks to block the spread of COVID-19 - The Verge Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:26 PM PDT The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new guidelines today recommending that people in the US wear homemade face coverings to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. "The CDC is additionally advising simple cloth coverings to help people who may have the virus and do not know it keep from from transmitting to others," said US Surgeon General Jerome Adams in a press conference at the White House today. When cases of COVID-19 were first reported in the US in January, the CDC said that only health care providers and people who are acutely ill should wear face masks. Health care providers use surgical masks and N95 respirators, which filter out tiny particles in the air, to protect themselves when they're working closely with sick patients. The White House task force and the CDC have been re-evaluating their mask recommendations over the past few days. Research shows that people without symptoms can infect others, and that the virus may spread when people speak or breathe — not just when they cough or sneeze. "In light of this new evidence, the CDC recommends and the task force recommends people wear cloth face coverings in public settings where other distancing measures are difficult to maintain," Adams said. If people cover their faces with a cloth mask or another barrier, it may blunt the amount of virus-laden particles they release, experts say. There is limited evidence that these types of makeshift masks prevent the spread of disease, though some research shows that they do reduce the amount of particles a person wearing them spreads. Some experts say that they're better than nothing. The CDC says people should continue to stay six feet apart when in public as much as possible, even if they're wearing masks. The US has a severe shortage of medical-grade masks, leaving doctors and nurses exposed to infection. In February, the US surgeon general warned that if the general public bought these masks, they put health care workers at risk. The new guidance stresses that members of the general public should not use surgical and N95 masks, because those should be reserved for health care workers. Instead, they should wear cloth masks or other makeshift face coverings. Some cities and states, like Colorado and New York City, had already asked people to cover their faces when out in public. The White House response to the pandemic has been characterized by confusing, quick-changing policies and messaging around public health measures like masks and testing. Changes are expected during a crisis, but the federal government did not adequately prepare people for those changes. The White House and President Donald Trump also continue to undercut messaging from the CDC. Trump said during today's press conference that he wasn't going to wear a mask. "This is voluntary. I don't think I'm going to be doing it," he said. Based on current estimates, the US is on pace to have the worst COVID-19 outbreak of any country in the world. University of Nebraska develops a COVID-19 screening mobile app - 1011now Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:54 PM PDT LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) has launched a mobile app to screen large groups of individuals who are concerned that they may have COVID-19 and to help first responders and other health care providers determine a person's likelihood of carrying the disease. UNMC worked in concert with Apple and with assistance from students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) to fast-track development, repeatedly test and now distribute the app, which can be downloaded on the App Store. "1-Check COVID" was created using Apple's ResearchKit and CareKit frameworks alongside UNMC medical and public health experts, who developed the appropriate clinical algorithms. The UNMC team was assisted by UNO's Harnoor Singh, director of student development for the Scott Scholars Program, as well as a small group of UNO students in the Scott Scholars program. 1-Check COVID is a user-friendly app that enables people to answer a series of questions and assess their likelihood of having COVID-19. Based on the user's input, the screening app will issue a "low-risk," "urgent risk" or "emergent risk" assessment and guide the individual toward possible next steps specific to their needs. The steps range from continued monitoring of symptoms, contacting one's health care clinic or public health department to determine whether testing is needed, or going to the nearest emergency facility and/or calling "911." The app also helps the user, if they wish, to share their COVID current risk profile with their health care professionals, employers, families and others. "This will hopefully be lifesaving," said UNMC and UNO Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. "The screening app is an important contribution to help our Nebraska communities and beyond navigate important symptoms of the coronavirus. 1-Check COVID will help reassure the worried well, assist public safety teams responding to concerns and guide individuals who may have symptoms but are unsure what to do or how to share their concerns with others." "Everyone's situation is unique," said Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for business development and director of UNeTech, who helped mature the project. "This tool will enable individuals to screen themselves based on their symptoms and decide if they're experiencing situational anxiety or need to call their doctor's office or something in-between." Broad distribution of the app will help guide the nation's response and manage information for wide-scale lab testing, said James Lawler, M.D., of the Global Center for Health Security at UNMC. "It's a tool to alleviate concerns, provide reasonable guidance and provide important information based on regional data." Although not a diagnostic tool, 1-Check COVID will provide appropriate advice based on the user's symptoms, recent travel, geographic region (based on the ZIP code) and medical history. Developers say the screening app will enable individuals to make thoughtful decisions about when, or if, they should seek medical attention and allow them to immediately share the results only if they so choose. There are fears a coronavirus crisis looms in Tokyo. Is it too late to change course? - CNN Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT The daily count of new coronavirus cases has doubled in the past week, from about 40 in the final days of March to 97 on Thursday and 89 on Friday, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. If the current trend continues, the outlook is bleak, said Kentaro Iwata, an infection control specialist from Kobe University, who has repeatedly warned that Japan isn't doing enough to halt the spread of the virus. "Japan needs to have the courage to change, when we are aware we are on the wrong path," Iwata said. "We might see the next New York City in Tokyo." New York is considered the epicenter of America's coronavirus outbreak. There, the number of known cases is doubling every five days, according to a CNN count. More than 2,900 people have died. As of Friday, Japan had 3,329 confirmed cases and 74 deaths. "The beginning of the burst of the infections in Spain, France, Italy, New York City -- was really like Tokyo right now," said Iwata. He says there needs to be more testing. As of Friday, Tokyo had tested fewer than 4,000 people in a city of 13.5 million. And just 39,466 people had been tested in this nation of 125 million, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. That's a tiny fraction compared to countries in the region and around the world. As of Friday, South Korea -- which has a much smaller population than Japan -- had tested more than 440,000 people. The Japanese government says its testing regime is adequate and suitably targeted to high risk cases. "Testing people with a low probability of novel coronavirus would be a waste of resources," Japan's Health Ministry told CNN in a statement. "We ask people with some symptoms to stay home for a period of time." Turned down for a testCoronavirus patient Issei Watanabe spoke to CNN from his Tokyo hospital room. He struggled to breathe in between coughing fits. Doctors consider his a "mild case" and expect he'll be discharged on Tuesday. Watanabe is 40, a non-smoker, in good health. His symptoms came on quickly. Body aches, chills, no sense of taste or smell. When he asked for a coronavirus test, he says he was turned down -- and had to endure five days with a fever above 40 degrees Celsius -- 104 degrees Fahrenheit -- before he was finally allowed to take a test, which came back positive. Watanabe says he infected at least two people during that time. "People don't know what to do. There's a real lack of good information," Watanabe said. "Your life is in your hands. Stay home. Please stay home. Don't go out." Watanabe worries about the tens of millions of Japanese who are older than 65. He knows he'll recover, but many in Japan's aging society won't. Infectious disease experts warn of a steep price in human life -- if coronavirus spreads rapidly, in this rapidly aging society. "Coronavirus is very dangerous to old people," said Masahiro Kami, executive director of Japan's nonprofit Medical Governance Research Institute. He said most coronavirus patients in Japan are likely showing few, if any, symptoms. "When they are asymptomatic, they can transmit the coronavirus to others," Kami warned. No lockdownJapanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has repeatedly stated the situation inside Japan does not warrant declaring a state of emergency or imposing a lockdown in Tokyo. He said such drastic measures would further damage an economy already grappling with the severe economic fallout of the coronavirus and the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 summer Olympics. Japanese lawmakers are mulling a massive economic stimulus package that could include cash handouts to Japanese households. The government has been widely mocked for a plan to distribute two cloth face masks per household. Japan has imposed tough new travel restrictions -- banning foreigners from more than 70 countries, including the US, the UK, and most of Europe. Japan has also beefed up health screenings at airports and is requesting all incoming travelers quarantine for 14 days, although compliance is not actively monitored. There is growing concern -- inside and outside of Japan -- that the government's increasingly dire warnings about the danger of spreading the virus may have reached many people too late. Carrying onLast week, huge crowds gathered for hanami, the viewing of the cherry blossoms. Some people were seen wearing masks, but many did not. The startling images -- shared widely on social media and on domestic and international media -- prompted the unprecedented closures of some Tokyo parks over the weekend. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and Abe are pleading with the public to stay home, avoid travel, and practice social distancing. Some are listening, but many are not. The government's policy so far has been to try to contain clusters by contract tracing positive cases and instructing suspected cases to quarantine. Proponents of the Japanese coronavirus approach have argued the society's cultural practices -- such as bowing instead of shaking hands, widespread use of surgical face masks, and more frequent washing of the hands and mouth -- could spare Japan from the kind of rapid spread of coronavirus seen in other nations. When asked if Japan is protected because it is not a "hug and handshake" culture, Iwata said "it is possibly one of the reasons for having less infections when compared to Europe and America." He calls the theory "valid," but "unproven." He does not believe Japan should base its strategy on the hope that hygienic cultural practices will be enough to spare Tokyo the worst. While Koike and Abe have urged the city's population of 13.5 million people to work from home -- advice heeded by major Japanese corporations like Honda, Toyota and Nissan -- telework is not possible for about 80% of Japanese companies, according to 2019 government data. Scores of people are still commuting into the capital, as evidenced by packed subway trains during rush hour. And despite the temporary closure of some major Japanese department stores and around 500 Starbucks locations, many bars and restaurants remain open and full of customers. Governor Koike announced Friday that 628 of the 750 beds Tokyo has secured for coronavirus patients are occupied, mostly by people with mild symptoms. Health authorities are in negotiations to move patients who are asymptomatic or reasonably well to separate lodgings such as hotels, she said. Once again, Koike warned of an impending crisis and urged people to stay at home. The curve does not appear to be flattening in Tokyo. If anything, the situation seems to be getting worse. Trump says CDC advises cloth masks to protect against coronavirus, but he will not wear one - CNBC Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump said the Centers for Disease Control now recommends using a cloth face covering to protect against coronavirus, but said he does not plan to do so himself. Speaking at a White House news conference on Friday, Trump stressed that the recommendations were merely voluntary, not required. "I don't think I'm going to be doing it" he said as he announced the new guidance. Responding to a question about why he had chosen not to follow the recommendations he himself was announcing, Trump said, "I'm feeling good. I just don't want to be doing -- somehow sitting in the Oval Office behind that beautiful resolute desk, the great resolute desk, i think wearing a face mask as I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens, I don't know, somehow I don't see it for myself. I just don't. Maybe I'll change my mind." Trump has faced criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for downplaying of the seriousness of the pandemic, although his tone has changed in the past week as U.S. cases have soared past a quarter of a million. Still, his decision to flout the CDC's guidelines is likely to draw further criticism from public health experts. The CDC's website explained that the recommendations were updated following new studies that some infected people can transmit the coronavirus even without displaying symptoms of the disease. "In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain," such as in grocery stores or pharmacies, "especially in areas of significant community-based transmission," the CDC says. New York state remains the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, with at least 102,863 confirmed cases and at least 2,935 deaths. The CDC said that cloth face coverings can be made at low cost from household items as an additional measure. The coverings are not a replacement for other social distancing measures when in public, such as maintaining six feet away from other people, the CDC said. The agency also noted that the coverings it recommends people wear "are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators." "Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders," the new guidance says. Moments after Trump announced he would not wear a mask, First Lady Melania Trump tweeted out a request that all Americans use them. The two conflicting messages underscored the disconnect between the president's personal messages and those coming from the rest of his administration. Following Friday's press briefing, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar issued a statement about the new guidance. In it, he said "President Trump has relied on the advice of America's best scientists throughout this crisis, and that science-based approach drove our new guidance around face coverings." Azar did not address the fact that the president will not be following this new guidance. Trump has previously recommended people wear scarves over their face, rather than respirators, which are in short supply and desperately needed by health-care workers for protection when tending to infected patients. Experts have said there is little evidence to suggest covering one's face with a scarf, bandana or other material will offer protection from the coronavirus. Doctors told CNBC that while cloth coverings might prevent some secretions from being passed on to other people, they might also make people more likely to touch their faces. They could also engender a "false sense of security," doctors said, which could lead people to disregard other preventative measures that are more established. ‘Black Widow,’ ‘Eternals,’ ‘Indiana Jones 5’ and More Disney Films Get New Release Dates - Variety Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:11 PM PDT 'Black Widow,' 'Eternals,' 'Indiana Jones 5' and More Disney Films Get New Release Dates - Variety From "Black Widow" and "The Eternals" to "Indiana Jones 5," Disney has overhauled the release calendar for most of its upcoming films as movie theaters remain closed for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus pandemic. "Black Widow" — which was delayed last month — will now open Nov. 6, 2020, taking the place of fellow Marvel adventure "The Eternals." That shift pushed back most impending installments in Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will now launch as follows: "The Eternals" on Feb. 12, 2021, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" on May 7, 2021, "Doctor Strange 2" on Nov. 5, 2021 and "Thor: Love and Thunder" on Feb. 18, 2022. "Black Panther 2" will still debut May 6, 2022, while "Captain Marvel 2" has been set for July 8, 2022. The studio's live-action remake of "Mulan" has been pushed to July 24, 2020, opening on the date previously occupied by "Jungle Cruise." However, there is no guarantee that theaters will even be reopened by then, and sources at Disney note that release dates could continue to move given the uncertainty over the global health crisis. "Jungle Cruise," a family film starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, will bow July 20, 2021, roughly a year after expected. Down the road, Harrison Ford's "Indiana Jones 5," initially launching in summer of 2021, has moved to July 29, 2022. Sci-fi fantasy film "Artemis Fowl," which supposed to open May 29, will instead debut on Disney Plus, making it the studio's first film to entirely skip its theatrical release. For now, Disney is keeping release dates for Pixar's "Soul" (June 19), "West Side Story" (Dec. 18) and "The Last Duel" (Dec. 25). Other shakeups to Disney's release calendar include Ryan Reynolds' "Free Guy," an action comedy from its 20th Century banner, which has moved from Aug. 3, 2020 to Dec. 11, 2020. Elsewhere, Wes Anderson's "The French Dispatch," from Searchlight, shifted from Aug. 24, 2020 to Oct. 16, 2020. As previously announced, "The New Mutants," "Woman in the Window," "Antlers" and "The Personal History of David Copperfield" remain without release dates. By now, every studio has postponed at least part of its summer movie slate — a mounting list that includes Sony's "Morbius" and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman 1984" and "In the Heights," Paramount's "Top Gun: Maverick" and Universal's "F9." The latest scheduling shift from Disney is yet another sign that the earliest movie theaters might reopen would be late into summer. When cinemas do reopen, there's no telling how eager audiences will be to return. It's not just the closure of multiplexes that is impacting Hollywood studios. The coronavirus pandemic has shut down production on numerous films, including "Doctor Strange" and "Shang-Chi," leaving companies uncertain when cameras will be able to roll again. Post-production has also been affected since employees have been forced to work remotely to help with social distancing. Consequentially, those films might not have been done in time to make their previously scheduled release dates. Artis—Naples cancels entire spring season - Naples Daily News Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:07 PM PDT Artis—Naples cancels entire spring season - Naples Daily News There will be no performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, no jazzy trumpet concert from Chris Botti, no performance of the musical, "A Bronx Tale." Artis—Naples on Thursday afternoon announced the cancellation of the rest of its season, which included those three events and nearly 30 more performances, exhibitions and lectures. It had already canceled all programming from March 12 to April 13 out of concern over the growing number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Southwest Florida and the known infectiousness of the disease. A news release from the venue called it a "difficult decision." But in view of the coronavirus dangers, its administration, said the release, felt the cancellations were "in the best interest of our patrons, musicians, team members, visiting artists and our wider community." The decision means Artis—Naples will have lost nearly 80 performances, events, lectures and exhibitions among its three internal venues: Hayes Hall, the Daniels Pavilion and The Baker Museum since March 12. It is an especially painful decision for three facets of the performing arts venue's operation. The Baker Museum had only re-opened in late November. It had been closed since September 2017 from water damage by Hurricane Irma and a consequent reconfiguring to add a tier of conference and performance areas. Those were scheduled to open this spring, but the COVID-19 regulations will delay that. Construction on the museum's addition, with its floors available for classes, conference, banquets and performances, will continue during the closure under the governmental exception of open construction sites as essential business. The performance of the Beethoven Symphony No. 9, a major concert scheduled for three performances with two different choruses, soloists and the Naples Philharmonic, would be a sizable loss to the season. But it was also to be the official farewell concert for James Cochran, founding director of the chorus, and his assistant director, Brice Gerlach, and singing skills instructor, Michele Byrd. Cochran worked with then-executive director Myra Janco Daniels to form the Naples Philharmonic Chorus in 1991. In a request as to whether that concert might rescheduled, Kathleen van Bergen, CEO and president of Artis—Naples, said in a statement that it would "endeavor to reschedule as many canceled performances, lectures and exhibitions as possible in future seasons. I truly hope that a Beethoven 9 is in our future. The two superstars went face-to-face in "The Battles" segment of "The Voice". Cedrice and Thunderstorm were undoubtedly on the same page, delivering an intimate duet of Rihanna's "Stay" featuring Mikky Ekko. RELATED: Kelly Clarkson Takes Fans On A Tour Of Her Family Ranch In Montana Their remarkable duet earned standing ovations from three coaches: Clarkson, Nick Jonas and John Legend. Legend repeatedly shouted, "beautiful" while applauding the two contestants. "You guys did not disappoint. That was out of this world," Jonas praised. "It was also so incredibly intimate. I didn't know if I was supposed to keep watching or turn away." RELATED: 'The Voice' Beatles Knockout Performance Inspires John Legend Save Clarkson interrupted, "Oh lord! Of Course Drake Made a TikTok Dance Challenge During a Pandemic - The Ringer Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:06 PM PDT Of Course Drake Made a TikTok Dance Challenge During a Pandemic - The Ringer There's a new Drake song in the world, which means we have no choice but to talk about it. But first, I'd like to talk about something else. Tom King and Mitch Gerads's Eisner Award–winning comic Mister Miracle is a long, deep, and occasionally funny psychological deep dive into the New Gods character, who's both a general in an ongoing intergalactic conflict and a richly successful celebrity escape artist. He was also once the ransom paid to a despot—in a move to secure an ultimately fragile peace between New Genesis and the planet Apokolips, Scott's dad, Highfather, traded sons with his most hated enemy, Darkseid. Darkseid is the malevolent force in the DC Universe, a red-eyed stone golem who funnels his considerable and deadly resources into a lifelong quest for the anti-life equation, a formula that mathematically proves the meaninglessness of hope, love, and freedom, and destroys free will. The same phrase pops up throughout King and Gerads's Miracle, often as Free drifts between reality and unreality, his mind creaking under untold levels of stress. Throughout the 12-issue run, it becomes shorthand for the weight of grief, the fog of depression, the profound silence of alienation. "Darkseid is." It's the answer to a question— "Who is the rock, the chain, the lightning? … Who is your new god now and forever?" It's also a declarative statement about the supervillain's everlasting nature: People live and die, planets can be decimated, galaxies are doomed to be swallowed by singularities, but still, Darkseid is. He is bigger, and more powerful, by several orders of magnitude, than the next biggest threat—so constant and fixed that his supremacy may as well be one of the laws of nature. Drake is hardly so evil—though we should never forget that he allegedly planned to unveil his child alongside a sneaker release—but he feels just as permanent. As Lindsay Zoladz once wrote for this website, around the release of "God's Plan," a mediocre single that walked confidently to the no. 1 spot and stayed there for about 1,000 weeks, something about Drake's success feels "by default." His past half-decade has been a marketing masterwork, from the imminently GIFable "Hotline Bling" video, to the empowering "Nice for What" video, to befriending Ninja so he could seep into the world of esports, to ducking the Pusha T fade with a glitzy Degrassi reunion. He's been in the same place conceptually for some time, and I have almost nothing else, critically, to offer about his actual work. He's barely interesting to me, at this point, as a celebrity phenomenon. But I guess you could hand it to him, if you wanted to: There is genuine artistry in how he's navigated a uniquely volatile industry for over a decade. In the Sun Tzu sense. So of course, while we're all stuck inside staring at our phones, with nothing to pass the time but DM chains and web challenges, he'd put out a TikTok dance. "Toosie Slide" feels marginal in the same way "God's Plan" did, and doubtlessly, it'll also walk to no. 1. There's airy, barely there OZ production, a modest bounce, and Drake sounding as dejected as anyone ever has while giving out instructions on how to do a dance. I was annoyed by the awkward syllabic balance of the hook—"basically I'm sayin either way we gon' slide, can'tletthisoneslide"—but by the third listen, I'd obviously learned the melody. It's a fine little radio-friendly ditty about doing the heel-toe and spraying up the block, and soon #toosieslidechallenge videos will be filling up your Instagram explore page if they haven't already. Mountains may crumble into the sea, Amazon Fresh delivery spots can quickly become unavailable, and our nation's infrastructure can go to pot in 21 days, but still, Drake is. 2020-04-03 18:00:43Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiW2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnRoZXJpbmdlci5jb20vbXVzaWMvMjAyMC80LzMvMjEyMDcyMDQvZHJha2UtdG9vc2llLXNsaWRlLXRpa3Rvay1kYW5jZS1jaGFsbGVuZ2XSAWhodHRwczovL3d3dy50aGVyaW5nZXIuY29tL3BsYXRmb3JtL2FtcC9tdXNpYy8yMDIwLzQvMy8yMTIwNzIwNC9kcmFrZS10b29zaWUtc2xpZGUtdGlrdG9rLWRhbmNlLWNoYWxsZW5nZQ?oc=5 |
Kourtney Kardashian Is Over Reality TV Life After Brawl With Kim - Vulture Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:06 PM PDT Kourtney Kardashian Is Over Reality TV Life After Brawl With Kim - Vulture KKW-branded boxing gloves coming soon. Photo: Getty Images for VIOLET GREY/Stefanie Keenan Keeping Up With the Kardashians' longest-running on-again, off-again feud came to a head in recent episodes, when Kourtney and Kim Kardashian — sisters, business partners, mortal enemies — got into a physical fight over … Kourtney's work ethic? (Doesn't seem like something worth smearing KKW Beauty foundation all over a wall for, but they knew Khloé would clean it up.) In last night's episode, the sisters reeled from the altercation and Kourtney made the decision to walk away from Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Dun, dun, dun! "I've decided to take a big step back from filming and really just pick and choose what I will allow cameras to follow," she said in the show. IRL, Kourtney opted out of livetweeting the episode (a tried-and-true Kardashian tradition) and, instead, defended her decision. "I won't be live tweeting #KUWTK tonight, as I'm spending time with my kids while they are on spring break," she wrote, diplomatically. "I realize that a lot of the conversation right now surrounds my work ethic, and I feel like I need to just make one thing clear: raising children is a job as well. In fact, it's the hardest and most rewarding job that I have ever had." Judgy fans, do not forget that Kourtney has three kids and a Scott Disick to look after. That's full-time, no benefits. "I've decided to put my focus on my kids and my lifestyle brand, Poosh, which is all about finding YOUR healthy balance for living your best life," she continued. "I don't judge anyone who chooses a different route, and I hope that everyone can appreciate my choices as well." Meanwhile, Kim's Twitter was business as usual, not even commenting on Kourtney's bombshell decision. It's unclear how long Kourtney actually stepped away from filming, but fans (and Kris Jenner's bank account) are hopeful that she'll be back. 2020-04-03 17:58:07Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiWWh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnZ1bHR1cmUuY29tLzIwMjAvMDQva291cnRuZXkta2FyZGFzaGlhbi1xdWl0cy1rdXd0ay1hZnRlci1maWdodC13aXRoLWtpbS5odG1s0gFdaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudnVsdHVyZS5jb20vYW1wLzIwMjAvMDQva291cnRuZXkta2FyZGFzaGlhbi1xdWl0cy1rdXd0ay1hZnRlci1maWdodC13aXRoLWtpbS5odG1s?oc=5 |
'Lean On Me,' 'Lovely Day' singer Bill Withers dies at 81 - The Associated Press Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:06 PM PDT 'Lean On Me,' 'Lovely Day' singer Bill Withers dies at 81 - The Associated Press Bill Withers, who wrote and sang a string of soulful songs in the 1970s that have stood the test of time, including " Lean on Me, " "Lovely Day" and "Ain't No Sunshine," has died from heart complications, his family said in a statement to The Associated Press. He was 81. The three-time Grammy Award winner, who withdrew from making music in the mid-1980s, died on Monday in Los Angeles, the statement said. His death comes as the public has drawn inspiration from his music during the coronavirus pandemic, with health care workers, choirs, artists and more posting their own renditions on "Lean on Me" to help get through the difficult times. "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other," the family statement read. "As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones." Withers' songs during his brief career have become the soundtracks of countless engagements, weddings and backyard parties. They have powerful melodies and perfect grooves melded with a smooth voice that conveys honesty and complex emotions without vocal acrobatics. "Lean on Me," a paean to friendship, was performed at the inaugurations of both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean on Me" are among Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. "He's the last African-American Everyman," musician and band leader Questlove told Rolling Stone in 2015. "Bill Withers is the closest thing black people have to a Bruce Springsteen." His death caused a torrent of appreciation on social media, including from former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, who said Withers' music has been a cherished part of her life. "It added to my joy in the good times, and also gave me comfort and inspiration when I needed it most," she tweeted. Billy Dee Williams tweeted "your music cheered my heart and soothed my soul" and Chance the Rapper said Withers' songs are "some of the best songs of all time" and "my heart really hurts for him." Lenny Kravitz said "My soul always has and always will be full of your music." "We lost a giant of songwriting today," ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams said in a statement. "Bill Withers' songs are among the most treasured and profound in the American songbook — universal in the way they touch people all over the world, transcending genre and generation. He was a beautiful man with a stunning sense of humor and a gift for truth." Withers, who overcame a childhood stutter, was born the last of six children in the coal mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia. After his parents divorced when he was 3, Withers was raised by his mother's family in nearby Beckley. He joined the Navy at 17 and spent nine years in the service as an aircraft mechanic installing toilets. After his discharge, he moved to Los Angeles, worked at an aircraft parts factory, bought a guitar at a pawn shop and recorded demos of his tunes in hopes of landing a recording contract. In 1971, signed to Sussex Records, he put out his first album, "Just As I Am," with the legendary Booker T. Jones at the helm. It had the hits "Grandma's Hands" and "Ain't No Sunshine," which was inspired by the Jack Lemmon film "Days of Wine and Roses." He was photographed on the cover, smiling and holding his lunch pail. "Ain't No Sunshine" was originally released as the B-side of his debut single, "Harlem." But radio DJs flipped the disc and the song climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard charts and spent a total of 16 weeks in the top 40. Withers went on to generate more hits a year later with the inspirational "Lean on Me," the menacing "Who Is He (and What Is He to You)" and the slinky "Use Me" on his second album, "Still Bill." Later would come the striking " Lovely Day," co-written with Skip Scarborough and featuring Withers holding the word "day" for almost 19 seconds, and "Just the Two Of Us," co-written with Ralph MacDonald and William Salter. His "Live at Carnegie Hall" in 1973 made Rolling Stone's 50 Greatest Live Albums of All Time. "The hardest thing in songwriting is to be simple and yet profound. And Bill seemed to understand, intrinsically and instinctively, how to do that," Sting said in "Still Bill," a 2010 documentary of Withers. But Withers' career stalled when Sussex Records went bankrupt and he was scooped up by Columbia Records. He no longer had complete control over his music and chafed when it was suggested he do an Elvis cover. His new executives found Withers difficult. None of his Columbia albums reached the Top 40 except for 1977's "Menagerie," which produced "Lovely Day." (His hit duet with Grover Washington Jr. "Just the Two of Us" was on Washington's label). Withers' last album was 1985′s "Watching You Watching Me." Though his songs often dealt with relationships, Withers also wrote ones with social commentary, including "Better Off Dead" about an alcoholic's suicide, and "I Can't Write Left-Handed," about an injured Vietnam War veteran. He was awarded Grammys as a songwriter for "Ain't No Sunshine" in 1971 and for "Just the Two Of Us" in 1981. In 1987, Bill received his ninth Grammy nomination and third Grammy as a songwriter for the re-recording of the 1972 hit " Lean on Me" by Club Nouveau. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 by Stevie Wonder. Withers thanked his wife as well as the R&B pioneers who helped his career like Ray Jackson, Al Bell and Booker T. Jones. He also got in a few jabs at the record industry, saying A&R stood for "antagonistic and redundant." Withers also was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. His music has been covered by such artists as Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Tom Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Paul McCartney, Sting, Johnny Mathis, Aaron Neville, Al Jarreau, Mick Jagger, Nancy Wilson, Diana Ross. His music has been sampled for BlackStreet's "No Diggity," Will Smith's version of " Just the Two Of Us, " Black Eyed Peas' "Bridging the Gap" and Twista's "Sunshine." The song "Lean on Me" was the title theme of a 1989 movie starring Morgan Freeman. His songs are often used on the big screen, including "The Hangover," "28 Days," "American Beauty," "Jerry Maguire," "Crooklyn," "Flight," "Beauty Shop," "The Secret Life of Pets" and "Flight." "I'm not a virtuoso, but I was able to write songs that people could identify with. I don't think I've done bad for a guy from Slab Fork, West Virginia," Withers told Rolling Stone in 2015. He is survived by his wife, Marcia, and children, Todd and Kori. ___ Mark Kennedy is at http://twitter.com/KennedyTwits 2020-04-03 18:00:38Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiM2h0dHBzOi8vYXBuZXdzLmNvbS9lMTkxMzhlZTYwZjI5YTMxOWU0NWJjZmJhM2UzOTMzMdIBAA?oc=5 |
