UN chief urges end to domestic violence, citing global surge - KOB Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:56 PM PDT ![]() "For many women and girls, the threat looms largest where they should be safest - in their own homes," Gutteres said. "And so I make a new appeal today for peace at home - and in homes - around the world." He said that in some countries, which he didn't name, "the number of women calling support services has doubled." At the same time, he said, health care providers and police are overwhelmed and understaffed, local support groups are paralyzed or short of funds, and some domestic violence shelters are closed while others are full. "I urge all governments to make the prevention and redress of violence against women a key part of their national response plans for COVID-19," Guterres said. He said that means creating safe ways for women to seek support without alerting their abusers, setting up emergency warning systems that abused women can access in pharmacies and food stores, increasing spending on online services and civil society organizations to help those abused, and declaring shelters an essential service. According to media reports, calls to online services and domestic violence cases have increased in the United States, gender-based violence cases doubled in India during the first week of restricted movements, the killing of women has surged in Turkey since the government advised people to stay home March 11, and almost 90,000 reports of gender-based violence were reported in South Africa during the first week of its lock-down. In addition, the Australian government reported a 75% increase in online searches for support on domestic violence, and a French minister said domestic violence rose 32% across France and 36% in Paris in one week, according to the media reports. "Together, we can and must prevent violence everywhere, from war zones to people's homes, as we work to beat COVID-19," the U.N. chief said.

Cahill names Chelsea star Mount as the Premier League's most exciting young player - Goal Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:01 PM PDT ![]() Former Everton star Tim Cahill has said he believes Chelsea's Mason Mount is the most exciting young player in the Premier League. After spending last season on loan at Derby County under Frank Lampard, Chelsea academy product Mount has successfully transitioned to the Blues senior team in 2019-20. With Lampard now his manager at Stamford Bridge, Mount has made 40 appearances for Chelsea this season, scoring six goals and adding five assists. The 21-year-old made his England debut in September 2019, and Cahill believes that there is plenty more to come from the attacking midfielder. Sky Sports asked Cahill to name the Premier League's most exciting young player, and the former Australia international said that Mount was his choice. "I like the look of Mason Mount. I think he's a top goalscorer and he's got a massive career ahead of him," Cahill said. "One of the reasons why I like him a lot is because of his coach [Lampard] and the way that he's trying to mould a player similar to himself. He can lead him and show him the right ways. "You can see that starting to come to fruition with his football this season. I'm a big fan." Cahill announced his retirement last year after a career that took him all over the globe, including stops in Australia, Asia, North America and Europe. The 40-year-old is best known for his time at Everton, where he played from 2004 to 2012 and became a fan favourite for his consistent performances with the Toffees. Cahill is still keeping a close eye on the progress of his former side, and said that the decision to sack Marco Silva in December and replace him with Carlo Ancelotti is paying off. "Marco Silva is a great manager but unfortunately he had some difficult times," Cahill said. "I think he needed to be more open and embrace the fans a little more. Results weren't going his way, but you can see the personality of Ancelotti, the aura and the respect that he carries. "He's won the fans over, which is really important because they're a big part of the football club. Everton will certainly improve and I'm looking forward to seeing where he can take the club." Posted: 05 Apr 2020 10:26 PM PDT ![]() A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19, and six other big cats are exhibiting symptoms consistent with the illness, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Sunday afternoon. "It's the first time, to our knowledge, that a [wild] animal has gotten sick from COVID-19 from a person," says Paul Calle, chief veterinarian for the Bronx Zoo. The Malayan tiger, named Nadia, likely contracted the coronavirus from an infected—but unknown—asymptomatic zookeeper. "It's the only thing that makes sense," Calle says. The zoo has been closed to visitors since March 16. Several domestic animals had previously tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, including a Pomeranian and a German shepherd in Hong Kong, a domestic cat in Belgium. Cats, both wild and domestic, are susceptible to feline coronavirus, but until recently, it was unknown whether they could contract SARS-CoV-2. A new Chinese study has found that cats may be able to infect each other, and scientists are rushing to learn what other species may be able to be infected by it. A world first at the Bronx ZooAfter developing a dry cough in late March, the four-year-old Malayan tiger, Nadia, was tested for the virus on April 2, according to Calle. Nadia's sister, two Siberian tigers, and three African lions have also had coughs and a loss of appetite, though they have not been tested. The zoo has the seven cats under veterinary care and expects them to recover, Calle says, though the Wildlife Conservation Society, the nonprofit that runs the Bronx Zoo, cautioned in a news release that it's unknown how the disease might progress in animals. When Nadia started showing symptoms, the veterinary team did a number of diagnostic tests and blood work. "Considering what's going on in New York City, we of course did the COVID testing," Calle says. The team took samples at the zoo, after sedating Nadia. They sent the samples for testing to the New York State Diagnostic Laboratory at Cornell University and the samples University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. It is not the same type of test that health care providers give to people, says Calle, "so there is no competition for testing between these very different situations." According to the USDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is currently no evidence that domestic or captive wild animals can spread the novel coronavirus to people. (It's believed the virus infecting humans likely developed from a very closely related coronavirus found in bats.) What's next? This is all completely new, Calle says, so there are many unanswered questions, including whether tigers and lions are more susceptible to coronavirus than other animals. None of the zoo's other big cats, including snow leopards, cheetahs, a clouded leopard, an Amur leopard, and a puma are showing symptoms. Zookeepers around the country have been making extra efforts to protect great apes in their care, as great apes can easily catch respiratory illnesses from humans. Experts have warned that they may be particularly susceptible to coronavirus. The Bronx Zoo team is going to be sharing the diagnostic information widely with the zoo and scientific community, Calle says. "I suspect that there are other cases, and now that we're sharing this information I have a hunch other likely cases will turn up." John Goodrich, chief scientist and tiger program director at Panthera, a global big cat conservation organization, is concerned for wild tiger populations. "Big cats like tigers and lions are already facing a litany of threats to their survival in the wild. If COVID-19 jumps to wild big cat populations and becomes a significant cause of mortality, the virus could develop into a very serious concern for the future of these species." Quibi launches its mobile streaming service in the middle of the quarantine era - TechCrunch Posted: 05 Apr 2020 09:09 PM PDT Quibi, the much-hyped mobile app promising to deliver "quick bites" of video entertainment, is finally here. The company has been in the headlines for more than two years, thanks to the involvement of founder Jeffrey Katzenberg (who previously co-founded DreamWorks Animation) and CEO Meg Whitman (previously the CEO of eBay and Hewlett Packard Enterprise). Plus, it's raised a whopping $1.75 billion to fund a star-studded content slate from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, Lena Waithe and Catherine Hardwick. Quibi is launching with nearly 50 shows today. The initial lineup includes "Chrissy's Court" (in which Chrissy Teigen presides over small claims court), "Shape of Pasta" (a food and travel show starring chef Evan Funke), "Most Dangerous Game" (a dystopian thriller starring Liam Hemsworth) and "Survive" (a scripted plane crash drama starring Sophie Turner). All the episodes are less than 10 minutes in length, and can be viewed in either portrait or landscape mode. Quibi says it will be delivering more than 25 new episodes every day, including segments of what the company is calling Daily Essentials — news and entertainment shows like "Last Night's Late Night" from Entertainment Weekly and "The Replay" from ESPN. The service will cost $4.99 with ads or $7.99 per month without ads. Quibi is also offering a 90-day free trial if you sign up before the end of April. ![]() Image Credits: Quibi In a briefing with reporters last week, CTO Rob Post acknowledged that it's been a long, expensive road to launch. But he said that given the heavy investment in content, "There was no room for [Chief Product Officer Tom Conrad] and I to deliver a minimum viable product." Instead, they had to build something that was fully polished. While Quibi has been building up to this for months, with a big presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show, Super Bowl ads and more, the world has changed, with a global pandemic making this a strange time to launch any product. People are certainly looking for distraction and escape right now. But the app is designed for viewing while you're on-the-go, whether that's walking around, waiting in line or sitting in the backseat of a car — all moments that are happening considerably less often as huge swaths of the population are advised to shelter in place and maintain social distance. Still, Post argued that there's a need for the kind of entertainment that Quibi is offering. "I'm looking to take small breaks more than ever before to stand up, walk around, go outside," he said. "Our use cases are these in-between moments. Now more than ever, that use case is still present." And of course, these restrictions have also created challenges for Quibi's launch and content production. "That's meant all kinds of things," Conrad said. "Our Daily Essentials, which were all set to be produced in studios in New York and L.A. each day, in most instances are being shot in people's homes … Everybody from the production team to postproduction houses to the engineering and marketing organizations are trying to adapt to this moment." Quibi has already been showing off is Turnstyle technology, which allows for a seamless transition back-and-forth between portrait and landscape modes. (Apparently Quibi's filmmakers have to deliver two edits of each episode, one optimized for each orientation.) Last week, the company gave reporters access to the full app. Judging from a few hours of exploration, Quibi is indeed as polished as Post and Conrad promised, making it easy to swipe through and browse the day's offerings. Turnstyle also works smoothly, with a blink-and-you'll-miss-it transition every time I rotate my phone. I quickly noticed, however, that I was torn between the two viewing modes. Portrait mode was more comfortable, particularly when I was watching a full seven- or eight-minute episode, but landscape mode looked much more cinematic, and often included imagery that had been cropped out of the more narrow, vertical footage. ![]() Image Credits: Quibi In addition, the focus on a smartphone app — rather than an experience for the browser, tablet or connected-TV — made for a clumsy experience anytime I tried to watch with someone else. (The whole point is to focus on the mobile viewing experience, but Conrad said, "If there's appetite for Quibi in the living room or on tablets, we certainly will follow that interest as the data reveals.") As for the content itself, my favorite show was probably "Most Dangerous Game," which kicks off with a tantalizingly bleak introduction (the premise will be familiar to viewers of the classic film of the same name). I also enjoyed "Shape of Pasta," which includes plenty of mouth-watering pasta footage, and"Chrissy's Court" — Teigen is always delightful, and I liked seeing a courtroom reality show that leans more into humor than drama. At CES, Whitman positioned Quibi as the first platform to truly take advantage of the new creative opportunities that mobile phones offer to filmmakers. She also emphasized that in contrast to free video platforms like YouTube, Quibi will offer "Hollywood-quality content." "[YouTube] is the most ubiquitous, democratized, incredibly creative platform," Whitman told us. "But they make content for hundreds of dollars a minute. We make it for $100,000 a minute." The production value is certainly evident — most of the shows I watched look significantly more expensive that what you'll find on YouTube. What's missing so far, however, is any real sense of the creative breakthrough that Whitman was hinting at. Instead, Quibi delivers well-produced, moderately entertaining shows that can be watched when you've got a few minutes to spare. They're fine, but rarely more than that. Maybe that will be enough for most viewers, particularly during the trial period. The challenge will be convincing those viewers to stick around and pay a subscription fee. To do that, I suspect Quibi will need a breakout show, or something that really takes advantage of the phone in a new way. We'll see if that arrives in the months to come. 'You have to be smart': Sagna gives Arsenal £150m Aubameyang warning - Goal.com Posted: 05 Apr 2020 09:01 PM PDT Arsenal have been warned it could cost £150 million ($180m) to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gunners' top scorer is out of contract in in the summer of 2021 and talks over an extension have been on hold since the start of the season. Mikel Arteta has spoken about wanting to keep the 30-year-old at 'all costs', but history has shown that Arsenal may be tempted to cash in if Aubameyang does not agree a new deal, rather than allowing him to walk away on a free transfer. However Bacary Sagna - who saw Robin van Persie sold to Manchester United during his time as an Arsenal player - is adamant that can't be allowed to happen and says the north London club must pay whatever Aubameyang wants to ensure he stays put. "He can't go now because Arsenal are on the way to building something strong," Sagna exclusively told Goal. "They can't afford to lose him. If they have to pay him, then just pay him because if they want someone else of his quality they cost £150m. "So don't spend this £150m, just spend £50m and give it to him. It's the same as van Persie and I think you have to learn from that situation. "Auba deserves it. I'm not saying that because of his name or because he has scored a few goals. He's the best striker in the league." Sagna added: "One year ago someone asked me if he was world class and I replied no. Some people were not happy about my answer, but to me he had the potential to be better and to be more clinical. "One year later, yes he is world class because every time he is in front of goal he scores. Even his movement is different. "He is clinical, he is so dangerous. As a defender you don't want to be facing this type of player." The fact Aubameyang is about to enter the final year of his current deal does lessen the control Arsenal have over the situation, however. Just as it did with van Persie in 2012. Yet Sagna believes the club handed Aubameyang the captaincy earlier in the season to show that they want him to lead the new era and now he says they must pay the forward - who has been linked with Barcelona - what he is worth. "Auba is a machine, he has scored many goals for the team," said the former Gunners defender. "If you want to build something, it has to be around him. "Giving him the armband gave him some confidence. He is the captain, which means they want him to lead. "Today, the stadium is the club's stadium. It's always full, they are making money. Of course there are other ways of spending money, but I would rather pay him than trying to find a solution with him than losing him and then wasting time trying with someone else, and finding someone else now is very, very difficult. "It's like playing chess. You have to be smart. He deserves it, just give it to him." With one goal, first-ever MLS game was filled with promise - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 05 Apr 2020 09:01 PM PDT ![]() Before the first-ever Major League Soccer match, a group of San Jose Clash players went to a local restaurant for some pregame bonding. Four of them threw up after the meal, but it had nothing to do with the food, recalled Eric Wynalda. "It was just the nervousness," he said. "These were guys that had never played in a professional game. We were just starting to feel the magnitude of what was about to happen, that we were going to be playing a game that the world was going to be watching." Wynalda scored the first — and only — goal back on April 6, 1996, when the Clash hosted D.C. United in the inaugural Major League Soccer match. The nationally televised event attracted a sellout crowd of 31,683 to Spartan Stadium. Monday marks the game's 24th anniversary, a bittersweet moment amid the coronavirus pandemic that has put the league's 25th season on hold indefinitely. Then-United coach Bruce Arena said the game was important for what it represented. "I recall that whole buildup, how proud we were when 'The Star-Spangled Banner' was played and they introduced teams. It was something we all waited for, for many years, to have a professional league back in the country," he said. Actor Andrew Shue, who starred on the TV series "Melrose Place," performed the coin toss. Shue was actually a good player and appeared in five games for the LA Galaxy in the league's inaugural year. Wynalda's goal in the 87th minute gave the Clash the victory on the warm evening. "I'm just so glad that I scored and we finished that game 1-0 and it didn't give all the haters an opportunity to say, 'Oh look, soccer's boring, 0-0,'" Wynalda said. "It was a wonderful moment and it really was the kick-start." From The Associated Press story at the time: "Wynalda, who earlier had failed to convert two good scoring chances, dribbled through two defenders and slammed a shot with his right foot past Washington's goalkeeper, Jeff Causey, and into the corner of the net." It went on: "Most of the sloppy game was played at midfield and there were few good scoring chances, giving ammunition to critics who charge soccer does not have enough offense to succeed in the United States." Wynalda played in three World Cups and scored 34 goals in 106 appearances with the U.S. team over a 10-year span. A National Soccer Hall of Famer, Wynalda now coaches the Las Vegas Lights of the USL Championship league. Jeff Agoos, now a senior vice president of competition for MLS, was a defender for D.C. United in the inaugural game. Agoos went on to a 10-year playing career in the league. "I give Eric an incredible amount of credit for what he was able to accomplish in the end. I do remember at the end of the game, in the shower and coming out of our locker room, feeling obviously disappointed in the result," Agoos said. "But I felt like the worst outcome we could have had was a 0-0 game, and that everybody had complained about soccer as boring. What Eric did, and what the team did, what the Clash was able to pull off — the fans, they wanted to come back. They wanted to see another game. And we really created a lot of momentum." Arena, himself a Hall of Famer and former national team coach, went on to coach teams to five MLS Cup titles. Now the coach of the New England Revolution, he said he's looking forward to the league's next quarter-century. "I was at a ceremony with (MLS Commissioner) Don Garber and I told him for the 50th anniversary, you know, we're going to have a bottle of Champagne and celebrate where the league's going to be at," he said. "Who would ever think MLS would be 25 years old? And I know it's going to make it to the 50th anniversary as well." Marion fundraiser nearly doubles goal, continues effort - WSIL TV Posted: 05 Apr 2020 09:01 PM PDT ![]() MARION (WSIL) -- In the span of just two weeks, the community of Marion rallied behind a fundraising event called "Marion United" and raised nearly double of their original goal. In a live-stream event, which worked much like a telethon, local musicians entertained hundreds while helping to raise grant money for small businesses struggling due to COVID-19. "We raised almost $200,000 in about a week-and-a-half," said Crown Brew co-owners Jared Gravatt. He and his business partner Joshua Benitone came up with the idea for the event. "It was just absolutely amazing to see the entire community come together with their resources, connections, and businesses just start donating to the cause - it was absolutely incredible." Working with Southern Illinois Community Foundation, Marion United is helping create grants for small businesses that may be left out of the stimulus package. "If you're a local Marion business that has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, you most likely are eligible for this grant," said Gravatt, adding that those looking to apply must do so by April 10th. "There's a comment section on the live stream," said Gravatt, describing how the event brought the community together, online, to share a message of hope and encouragement. "People are commenting, liking; it was amazing. The energy was so intense that whole night, either live stream or in the building itself." Gravatt adds that Marion United will continue to collect funds for struggling small businesses, and they also envision the new organization to become an ongoing effort to support the community and its growth. Shirley Douglas, Canadian activist-actress, dies at 86 - Los Angeles Times Posted: 05 Apr 2020 08:01 PM PDT ![]() Shirley Douglas, the impassioned Canadian activist and veteran actress who was mother to actor Kiefer Sutherland and daughter of Canada medicare founder Tommy Douglas, died Sunday. She was 86. Sutherland announced his mother's death on Twitter, saying she succumbed to complications surrounding pneumonia. He said it was not related to COVID-19. ``"My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life,″ said Sutherland. ``Sadly she had been battling for her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming.″ Advertisement A native of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Douglas worked with directors including Stanley Kubrick ("``Lolita″) and David Cronenberg (``"Dead Ringers″), and she won a Gemini Award for her performance in the 1999 TV film ``"Shadow Lake.″ She tirelessly supported a variety of causes throughout her life, including the civil rights movement, the Black Panthers and the fight to save Canada's public healthcare, pioneered by her politician father. In 1965, Douglas married Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, with whom she had two children before they divorced — twins Rachel, a production manager, and Kiefer, who became a film and TV star in his own right. Douglas had another son, Thomas, from a previous marriage. Advertisement Born April 2, 1934, Douglas showed an early interest in the arts as well as politics as she journeyed on the campaign trail with her father, who became premier of Saskatchewan, a national leader in the New Democratic Party and a socialist icon. She attended the Banff School of Fine Arts and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England, where she acted in theater and TV and participated in anti-nuclear marches. In the 1960s and '70s, while living in California, Douglas campaigned against the Vietnam War and protested for various causes. She helped to establish a fundraising group called Friends of the Black Panthers. Her support for the group brought controversy — she was refused a U.S. work permit and charged in 1969 with conspiracy to possess unregistered explosives. The courts eventually dismissed the case and exonerated her. She also was a co-founder of the first chapter in Canada of the Performing Artists for Nuclear Disarmament. Posted: 05 Apr 2020 07:26 PM PDT ![]() Australian police have launched a criminal investigation into the docking and disembarking of passengers from the Ruby Princess cruise ship in Sydney last month, which led to Australia's highest concentration of coronavirus cases. Authorities have been criticized for allowing 2,700 passengers and crew to disembark from the ship when it docked in Sydney on March 19. A total of 11 of the ship's passengers have died, with four of the deaths over the weekend. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said in a statement Sunday that the investigation will look at the actions of all parties involved, including government agencies and cruise line officials. "This is a complex issue and we will need information from many witnesses to answer all the questions about how this ship ended up docking last month," he said. "We are mindful that some of the key information we need will also come from passengers, so I urge those who were on-board to reach out to us." Authorities in Australia have confirmed 342 cases of COVID-19 in passengers who got infected while on the ship or before boarding. Not all crew members disembarked, and an unknown number are ill. Princess Cruises posted a message on its website March 30 as the ship floated off Australia's coast. "Being able to send home those crew members who are not required for the safe operation of the ship is the right thing to do both from a humanitarian point of view and Australia's international standing as a maritime nation that looks after foreign nationals in its care," the post reads. "We remain concerned that it is not safe for the ship to sail away from Australia while there are crew members on board who are ill." Princess Cruises has been at the eye of the coronavirus storm with two of its ships, the Diamond Princess and the Grand Princess, experiencing significant, back-to-back outbreaks of COVID-19 in the span of two months. In February, more than 700 people tested positive and 11 died after being on board the Diamond Princess, which was quarantined for two weeks off the coast of Japan. At least 103 Grand Princess passengers were infected and two have died; that ship docked in Oakland, California, last month. U.S. passengers from both ships were quarantined at military bases for two weeks after returning. Disembarkation began Saturday for passengers on the Coral Princess, hours after the ship docked in Miami with at least a dozen people on board who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. A representative for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (their counterpart to the U.S. State Department) confirmed that 80 Australian citizens left the ship Saturday. "All of us at Princess Cruises are deeply saddened to report that two guests passed away on Coral Princess," the company said in a statement shared Saturday by spokesperson Negin Kamali. "Our hearts go out to their family, friends, and all who are impacted by this loss. All of us at Princess Cruises offer our sincere condolences." Their causes of death were not disclosed. Disembarkation of the Coral Princess at Port Miami is expected to span several days. The first to disembark will be those who need medical care. Passengers who are healthy and fit to fly are expected to begin disembarking Sunday, the line announced in a release shared Saturday by Kamali. They will be transferred directly from the ship to Miami International Airport for flights home. Passengers who are exhibiting any signs of respiratory illness or who are recovering from being ill will be kept on board until they're cleared by the ship's medical personnel. As of Thursday, seven passengers and five crew members had tested positive for COVID-19, the novel virus that has infected more than 1 million people worldwide and killed more than 60,000. There are 1,898 people on board, including 1,020 passengers and 878 crew members. The cruise ship had been working to dock April 6 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where two Holland America ships, the MS Rotterdam and MS Zaandam, docked Thursday. Between those two ships, more than 200 people had reported coronavirus-like symptoms, and 14 critically ill people were taken to Florida hospitals, and the Coral Princess went to Port Miami instead. More: Coronavirus travel restrictions around the world: A country-by-country list The Coast Guard said in a news release Saturday it has been involved with processing about 120 vessels carrying some 250,000 passengers over the past three weeks because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Coast Guard statement said as of Saturday there are 114 cruise ships, carrying 93,000 crew members, either in or near U.S. ports and waters. That includes 73 cruise ships, with 52,000 crew members, moored or anchored in U.S. ports and anchorages. Canadian actress and activist Shirley Douglas dies at age 86 - The Associated Press Posted: 05 Apr 2020 07:01 PM PDT ![]() TORONTO (AP) — Shirley Douglas, the impassioned Canadian activist and veteran actress who was mother to actor Kiefer Sutherland and daughter of Canada medicare founder Tommy Douglas, died Sunday. She was 86. Sutherland announced his mother's death on Twitter, saying she succumbed to complications surrounding pneumonia. He said it was not related COVID-19. "My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life," said Sutherland. "Sadly she had been battling for her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming." A native of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Douglas worked with directors including Stanley Kubrick ("Lolita") and David Cronenberg ("Dead Ringers"), and she won a Gemini Award for her performance in the 1999 TV film "Shadow Lake." She tirelessly supported a variety of causes throughout her life, including the civil rights movement, the Black Panthers and the fight to save Canada's public health care, pioneered by her politician father. In 1965, Douglas married Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, with whom she had two children before they divorced — twins Rachel, a production manager, and Kiefer, who became a film and TV star in his own right. Douglas had another son, Thomas, from a previous marriage. Born on April 2, 1934, Douglas showed an early interest in the arts as well as politics as she journeyed on the campaign trail with her father, who became premier of Saskatchewan, a national leader in the New Democratic Party and a socialist icon. She attended the Banff School of Fine Arts and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England, where she acted in theater and TV and participated in anti-nuclear marches. In the '60s and '70s, while living in California, Douglas campaigned against the Vietnam War and protested for various causes. Douglas, though, was foremost a champion for Canada's medicare system. She would speak of the importance of a universal health care system at virtually any opportunity and lobbied government officials. Douglas, who had lived in Toronto since 1977, was nominated for two other Canadian arts Geminis: in 1998 for her leading role in the series "Wind at My Back" and in 1993 for starring in the film "Passage of the Heart." With 1 goal, first-ever MLS game was filled with promise - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:31 PM PDT Before the first-ever Major League Soccer match, a group of San Jose Clash players went to a local restaurant for some pregame bonding. And I know it's going to make it to the 50th anniversary as well." ___ More AP soccer: https://ift.tt/2Jaxh9l and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright 2020 The Associated Press. A tiger at the Bronx Zoo tests positive for coronavirus - CNN Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT The 4-year-old female Malayan tiger tested positive after developing a dry cough and is expected to recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo said in a news release. Samples from Nadia were taken and tested after the tiger -- and five other tigers and lions at the zoo -- began showing symptoms of respiratory illness, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). No other animals at the zoo are showing symptoms. "Though they have experienced some decrease in appetite, the cats at the Bronx Zoo are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers," the zoo said. "It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries." The animals were infected by a zoo employee who was "asymptomatically infected with the virus" while caring for them, according to the zoo. The Bronx Zoo has been closed to the public since March 16. Anyone sick with the coronavirus is being advised to minimize contact with animals, including pets, until more information is known about the virus, the USDA said. Tearful Michelle Money Pleads for Prayers for Hospitalized Daughter - E! Online Posted: 05 Apr 2020 01:14 PM PDT Tearful Michelle Money Pleads for Prayers for Hospitalized Daughter - E! Online Michelle Money broke down in tears on Sunday as she pleaded for fans to pray for her daughter Brielle, who remains unconscious in the hospital a week after her skateboarding accident. Last week, the Bachelor alum and winner of season 1 of Bachelor in Paradise revealed that the 15-year-old girl had suffered a "serious brain trauma and a fractured skull" and was in the ICU in a medically induced coma at Intermountain Healthcare's Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. "I need everyone to pray right now because we just have to get her stabilized," a tearful Michelle said in a video posted on Instagram. "I posted on my Story to have you guys pray and once I posted that, her numbers started going down. Today's been a week and if we can't get her numbers stabilized then she, we are gonna have to put her into a deeper coma that has lots of other side effects that we don't want or we're gonna have to do surgery and remove part of her skull." "Please pray for her. It's been a week, it's been a while week. Last night was just really scary but when I posted on my Story for you guys to pray, her numbers started stabilizing," she continued, weeping. "I just need you guys to really pray right now, OK? Thank you." She also wrote, "It's Sunday. However you choose to spend your day, I would please ask that at 4pm MST, you will stop and pray with my family and me. It would also be amazing if you could just pray all day. Sorry for the emotional video I just don't know what else to do and I'm alone in here and need support. #prayforbrie" On Saturday, Michelle's ex and Brielle's father, Ryan Money, gave an update on their child's condition. The reality star reposted it. "I guess it's important to share the good and the bad," he wrote on Instagram. "We were really hoping that we would be able to get Brielle an MRI on Sunday (tomorrow). This MRI is to check the ligaments in her neck and make sure that there is no damage to them. The reason why this is important is that if they are damaged then her neck needs to be immobilized. They do this by putting on a pretty bulky neck brace." "Without the MRI though they will not know if her neck is okay and by default when she starts to wake up they will have to have her neck in a brace. She will most likely not like the brace," he added. He said that after their daughter wakes up, doctors will "eventually do X-rays in extension to see if her ligaments are okay before they would take the neck brace off." "Since I came here 21 hours ago her pressure number has been all over the place, which is not good," he wrote. "They have tried to take her off of [the general anesthetic] Propofol but she hates it when they do that and her pressure number shoots up. They do not want her to get Propofol Infusion Syndrome (toxicity). They do labs every 2 and 4 hours to test for this. If she starts to get this they will just switch her to Pentabarbital. We have just not made any progress with her pressure numbers being low and staying low in the last 48 hours." In his post, Ryan included a photo of the neck brace, as well as a pic of doctors and nurses discussing Brielle and an image of nurses moving her to lay on her side. "I can't say thanks enough to all the thoughts, prayers and actions of those around us. We had a group of friends that brought in a truck full of food, drinks (@monsterenergy) and chip @chipcookiesco," he wrote. "I thought to myself no way they can eat all of this food. Well, it's GONE and it's only 4 hours after they got it. They were soooooo appreciative and hence when you take care of the people who are taking care of our daughter we cannot thank you enough." "Love you all and thanks for the prayers!" he wrote.
