In the early hours of Sunday morning in Australia - Slovenia hosted their annual national final Evrovizijska Melodija (EMA) where Ana Soklič debuted her 2021 entry 'Amen'. Soklič's performance took a very small chunk of runtime but was certainly the highlight of the night.
The contest marked an important anniversary for Slovenia - the 60th anniversary since their first appearance in the Eurovision Song Contest (including appearances as part of Yugoslavia). The night was hosted by Nejc Šmit and Lea Sirk (2018 Slovenian Eurovision entrant). The bulk of the show consisted of a walk down memory lane - celebrating previous Eurovision attempts and chatting to the artists that performed those entries.
Slovenian broadcasters RTV announced Soklič would retain her position as national representative in May 2020 shortly after the cancelled contest.
Following the announcement of Soklič as the selected artist, composers were able to submit their songs to the broadcaster between 13 July 2020 and 30 September 2020. 191 songs were received by the broadcaster during the submission period. An expert committee was formed to sift through the entries consisting of Darja Švajger (singer, vocal coach and 1995 and 1999 Slovenian Eurovision entrant) and Vladimir Graić (composer of Serbia's winning Eurovision entry "Molitva" in 2007), Darja Švajger, Mojca Menart (Head of the publishing business of ZKP RTV Slovenija) and Matevž Šalehar (musician and singer-songwriter) whom selected the entry.
Soklič was to compete in the 2020 contest with 'Voda' following her EMA 2020 win. Due to the cancellation of the contest the entry never saw the stage of Eurovision.
