Ohio State a late entry into 2022 DE Marvin Jones Jr.’s recruiting process: Buckeyes Recruiting Roundup - cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Despite already narrowing down 30 offers to just 10 programs that did not include a Big Ten school, a recent offer from Ohio State has moved the Buckeyes into the picture for the nation’s No. 4 defensive end, Marvin Jones, Jr.

“Ohio State is a very successful program, especially in my position. I feel like it would be stupid of me not to consider a school like that,” Jones told cleveland.com.

Jones is a product of American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla, and is a legacy of his father, Marvin Jones, a former NFL linebacker who starred at Florida State (a finalist for the son) and professionally with the New York Jets for 10 seasons.

Creating a name for himself, the four-star emerged in his junior season, finishing with 15.5 sacks, a season-high for any South Florida high school athlete.

“I wanted to get recognized by more schools as far as recruiting,” Jones said. “These last few months have been slower than before after I dropped my Top 10 so right and I actually have an idea on six or seven schools.”

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound defender released a Top 10 on Jan. 2 which included Miami, Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Florida State, Georgia, Oregon, Jackson State and Texas.

In the company of interpersonal relationships coupled with family ties, West Virginia and Florida State stand out as two of the programs that he has frequented the most. At West Virginia, Jones’ older brother, Daryl Porter Jr., is a freshman cornerback, and his father was inducted into the Seminoles’ Hall of Fame in 2000.

“My dad went to Florida State so every chance he got to take me to a Florida State game that’s where I was,” Jones said. “Right now Florida State isn’t where they used to be, but the people I’ve met there a lot of them have stuck around. I’ve built relationships with a lot of good people there.”

Although Ohio State’s offer came late onto the scene, Larry Johnson’s player development and recruiting techniques speak for themselves.

“I feel like if I was to go there Coach Johnson, one of the greatest coaches ever, would help me get to where I want to be. I could go there and really produce myself and get to the NFL,” Jones said.

With the news of Chase Young becoming the fourth Ohio State player in five years to win the Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, that development of defensive linemen does not go unnoticed.

“My on-the-field influences are Von Miller and Joey Bosa,” Jones said. “(Johnson) feels like my size and speed are very reflective of what that school has put out. So players like Joey, Nick Bosa, and Young are all 6-foot-5 and 260 or 270. He thinks I can get to a similar place like them.”

Ohio State’s 2022 recruiting class is top-ranked early in the process, but has yet to land a defensive lineman.

“It hasn’t been pressure to commit,” Jones said. “Development is my biggest thing. So whatever school I feel like has put out guys in my position consistently is what I would consider most heavily.”

Kojo Antwi receives Michigan offer

Ohio State 2022 WR target Kojo Antwi has received another Big Ten offer, this time from the Michigan Wolverines. Antwi released a Top 8 on Dec. 30 which included USC, Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Oregon.

In January, the four-star recruit told cleveland.com that he feels like a top priority to Ohio State, who has been at the top of the recruit’s list even before this year’s CFP matchup with Alabama.

According to 247Sports, Antwi’s crystal ball prediction is 50 percent Ohio State and 50 percent Georgia. He is listed as warm on Alabama and Georgia, and warmer on Ohio State and Texas A&M.

Caden Curry invited to 2022 All-American Bowl

The 2022 All-American Bowl invitees are adding Ohio State targets. Junior defensive tackle Caden Curry becomes the latest to be invited to the bowl, which is set to play on January 8, 2022.

Curry is a 6-foot-5, 250-pound athlete out of Greenwood, Indiana with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Texas and USC, among others. He was offered by Ohio State in May but has yet to make any moves regarding his recruiting process.

Ohio State’s 2022 linebacker commit C.J. Hicks was also invited to the bowl game back in October. In January, defensive end target Khurtiss Perry also committed to the game.
