Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse reserve linebacker Geoff Cantin-Arku has entered his name into the transfer portal, according to a report from 247 Sports’ Stephen Bailey. The linebacker re-tweeted the news.
He did not immediately respond to a request for comment made through social media.
The loss of Cantin-Arku, a third-year sophomore, would likely to hurt the Orange’s depth over the course of the final two games of the season. He is fourth on Syracuse in tackles this season with 43, and he was the primary backup behind the team’s three starters at the position.
While the amount of playing time he has seen as a reserve this season has been unpredictable, he had played in every games so far this season for Syracuse. According to Pro Football Focus, he played 90 snaps the last two weeks in games against Boston College and Louisville and never played fewer than 23 this year.
He started 10 games last year but was fourth on the linebacker list this season behind Mikel Jones, Marlowe Wax and Stefon Thompson.
Syracuse’s defense ranks sixth in the ACC in points allowed per game (24.4) and second in yards (323.2).
The other two backup linebackers listed on SU’s depth chart -- Leon Lowry and Anwar Sparrow -- have played significantly less this year, participating only in the team’s game against Albany.
Cantin-Arku was one of the more highly-touted members of Syracuse’s Class of 2019, ranking No. 606 on 247 Sports’ list of the top 1,000 recruits in the country. He was the fourth-highest among SU’s recruits.
Cantin-Arku, who is from Quebec, Canada, is the eighth Syracuse player to leave the team or enter the transfer portal since the start of training camp joining a list that includes wide receiver Taj Harris, quarterback Tommy DeVito, safety Ben Labrosse, offensive lineman Cody Shear, edge rusher Latarie Kinsler, tight end Landon Morris, quarterback Dillon Markiewicz and running back Jarveon Howard.
