A woman's claim that she was denied entry to the Golden Temple in Amritsar due to a tattoo of the national tricolour painted on her face has sparked a controversy. It is a common practice among visitors to have the tattoo done while going to watch the 'Beating the Retreat' ceremony held at the Attari-Wagah Joint Check Post every evening. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has issued an apology for any misbehaviour by its employees. However, SGPC General Secretary Gursharan Singh Grewal has claimed that the issue is being blown out of proportion to give it a political colour. The Golden Temple is a holy place for Sikhs and has its own decorum. SGPC welcomes all visitors, but there are certain guidelines that must be followed to maintain the sanctity of the place. The SGPC is the organisation that manages the shrine's daily affairs.
