Alexis Gendron, drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh round in 2022, has been signed to a three year, entry level contract.
Once you hit the later rounds of a draft, getting anything of value is a bonus. Players chosen in the fifth, sixth, or even seventh round don’t come with much expectation. If the player doesn’t hit, it’s not as if the team was necessarily expecting them to. But if said player ends up contributing in any form at the NHL level, it’s that much more of a good look on the scouting departing.
Alexis Gendron was taken with the 220th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He has played the last three seasons in the QMJHL. This past season, Gendron spent the year between the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada and Gatineau Olympiques. For the Armada, he posted 22 goals and 34 points in 29 games. He was traded mid-season to the Olympiques where his offense took off even more. Gendron ended the season with 33 goals and 47 points in 34 games. Even with those impressive numbers, his 81 points ranked 14th in the QMJHL, a league known for high-scoring offenses.
The playoffs is where he excelled even more. Gendron had 14 goals and 19 points overall in 13 playoff games in the QMJHL. He led the league with six power play goals, was tied for first in goals and tied for third with three game-winning goals. Gendron also had a nine-game point streak in the playoffs in which he recorded 12 goals and 16 points. He took a step forward after the mid season trade and has another year of juniors to go before he makes the decision to turn to the pro game. Due to his December birthday, he is not eligible to play in the AHL at the start of next season.
It also helps that Gendron has hockey in his blood. His father, Martin, is currently a scout in the Flyers organization. He had an short career in the NHL as well, skating in just 30 career games and recording four goals and six points. He spent the majority of his playing career in the minors or across Europe.
The upside is there for a player that was taken with one of the final picks in the entire draft. Gendron has made strides and will continue to do that in a full season with the Olympiques. Who knows what he could turn into but it’s clear that the Flyers are happy with his progress over the last year.
