Venice Authorities Say €5 Entry Fee Will Be Introduced In 2024 - Forbes

Venice city council has announced that its much-delayed ticketing system will now be introduced in spring 2024.

The scheme will see day trippers charged a €5 entry fee to visit the historic center.

The measure hopes to reduce tourist numbers and comes after UNESCO said it was considering placing Venice on the world heritage danger list.

The city’s council executive gave the green light on Tuesday for the introduction of the fee.

“Regulating tourist flows in certain periods is necessary, but that does not mean closing the city. Venice will always be open to everyone,” said Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice.

The entry ticket will apply to day visitors only.

Residents, commuters, students and children under 14 years of age will be exempt. Tourists who book accommodation in the historic city center will also not have to pay the fee.

“The objective is to discourage daily tourism in certain periods, in line with the fragility and uniqueness of the city,” the local authority said in a statement.

The entry fee to access the historic city of Venice has been long mooted and still requires approval from the wider city council.

In the meantime, the council executive agreed to a 30-day trial period which will include public holidays and weekends during spring and summer next year.

Many details have still not been released including whether there will be a limit on the number of tickets available each day.

Simone Venturini, Venice’s tourism council, said the entry fee will make the city a “trailblazer on the global level.”

He said the city does not intend to make money with the scheme as the €5 fee will only cover running costs.

Instead, he said the aim was to find a “new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice, and those who visit the city.”

Venice has been suffering from overtourism for years, with popular sites like the Rialto Bridge and St Mark’s Square frequently overwhelmed by crowds.

In 2021, the city brought in a ban on large cruise ships passing in front of St Mark’s Square.

The measure hoped to reduce the influx of passengers that descend in their thousands and clog up the city center's narrow streets.
