On Hong Kong streets, protesters say ‘Thank you’ to Donald Trump - The Indian Express Posted: 01 Dec 2019 12:13 AM PST Hundreds of people in Hong Kong, including many elderly residents, marched to the U.S. consulate on Sunday to show "gratitude" for U.S. support of anti-government protests that have roiled the financial hub for nearly six months. Waving American flags, with some donning Donald Trump logo hats and t-shirts, protesters unfurled a banner depicting the U.S. president standing astride a tank with a US flag behind him. Another banner read "President Trump, please liberate Hong Kong." Trump this week signed into law congressional legislation that supported protesters in the China-ruled city, despite angry objections from Beijing. "Thank you President Trump for your big gift to Hong Kong and God bless America," shouted a speaker holding a microphone as he addressed a crowd at the start of the march. Earlier on Sunday, hundreds of protesters, including many families with children, marched in protest against police use of tear gas. Carrying yellow balloons and waving banners that read "No tear gas, save our children", the protesters streamed through the city's central business district towards government headquarters on the main Hong Kong island. There has been relative calm in Hong Kong for the past week but activists have pledged to maintain the momentum of the movement with three marches planned for Sunday. All have been approved by authorities. Anti-government protests have rocked the former British colony since June, at times forcing government offices, businesses, schools and even the international airport to shut. "We want the police to stop using tear gas," said a woman surnamed Wong, who marched with her husband and five year old son. "It's not a good way to solve the problem. The government needs to listen to the people. It is ridiculous." Police have fired around 10,000 rounds of tear gas since June, the city's Secretary for Security, John Lee, said this week. Further Protests Sunday's marches came as a top Hong Kong official said the government was looking into setting up an independent committee to review the handling of the crisis, in which demonstrations have become increasingly violent. The protesters in Hong Kong are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. China denies interfering and says it is committed to the "one country, two systems" formula put in place at that time and has blamed foreign forces for fomenting unrest. On Saturday, secondary school students and retirees joined forces to protest against what they called police brutality and unlawful arrests. While Saturday's rallies were mostly peaceful, public broadcaster RTHK reported that police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters after a vigil outside the Prince Edward metro station. Some residents believe that some protesters were killed by police there three months ago. Police have denied that account. Further protests are planned through the week and a big test of support for the anti-government campaign is expected on December 8 with a rally planned by Civil Human Rights Front, the group that organised million-strong marches in June. Another march is planned on Sunday in the popular shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui. That march is scheduled to end in Hung Hom, a district near the ruined campus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The campus turned into a battleground in mid-November when protesters barricaded themselves in and faced off riot police in violent clashes of petrol bombs, water cannon and tear gas. About 1,100 people were arrested last week, some while trying to escape. On Friday police withdrew from the university after collecting evidence and removing dangerous items including thousands of petrol bombs, arrows and chemicals which had been strewn around the site. Jurgen Klopp names shock man of the match after Liverpool beat Brighton - Metro.co.uk Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:33 PM PST Jurgen Klopp named Liverpool sub goalkeeper Adrian his man of the match after the Premier League win over Brighton. The Reds defeated Brighton 2-1 at Anfield on Saturday to move 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Two Virgil van Dijk headers put Liverpool in complete control and, despite Alisson's second-half sending off and a Brighton goal, the hosts held on to record three points. Alisson was dismissed for a blatant handball and Adrian, who featured regularly at the start of the season, fished the ball out of his net with his first touch after Lewis Dunk caught Liverpool cold with a free-kick. Adrian looked anxious after replacing Alisson but made a fine save to deny Aaron Mooy late on and was declared the 'man of the match' by Liverpool boss Klopp. Advertisement Advertisement On Alisson's sending off, Klopp said: 'I think it was handball but I haven't seen it. There was no offside and then it is a tricky situation. 'He wanted 100% to head the ball but the other player got there earlier so we can't change that. 'Virgil [van Dijk] was probably man of the match with the two goals but Adrian is for me – to come in to a game like this and make two saves. 'Even the goal-kicks are difficult with cold feet! We were not prepared for that situation so I am completely happy.' On Liverpool's battling win, Klopp added: 'It was unnecessary [for the game to be nervy at the end], of course, because we had unbelievable chances. Their keeper made some good saves. 'It was difficult this game because Brighton are a good football side. They put players between the lines. They put so many players there so it's difficult to defend. 'They had a lot of possession and we had to work really hard. I loved that the boys were prepared to do that after a busy week. Advertisement Advertisement 'We then had the red card for Alisson. Adrian comes in with cold feet and cold hands but made two really good saves. 'The boys threw everything on the pitch. It's unbelievable how much they want to win. They made it a really special win.' Manchester City, who beat Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, dropped points at Newcastle United earlier in the day. Virgil van Dijk sends message to Liverpool stars ahead of Everton derby clash - Metro.co.uk Posted: 30 Nov 2019 09:03 PM PST Virgil van Dijk has issued a rallying cry to his Liverpool team-mates ahead of the Merseyside derby against Everton. Premier League leaders Liverpool welcome arch-rivals Everton to Anfield on Wednesday evening. Jurgen Klopp's side defeated Brighton on Saturday to move further clear at the top of the Premier League, while Everton will look to ease the pressure on Marco Silva against in-form Leicester City on Sunday.
Van Dijk scored a brace in Liverpool's victory over Brighton and wasted no time before turning his attentions to the upcoming Merseyside derby. 'I'm looking forward to every game and obviously Wednesday is going to be a good one,' Van Dijk said. 'Everyone is looking forward to that. Advertisement Advertisement 'What we have to do now is make sure we're more than 100 per cent on Wednesday. Luckily, we have some time to recover and make sure we're ready.' Van Dijk's first-half brace put Liverpool in control against Brighton but the visitors threatened to mount a comeback after goalkeeper Alisson was sent off for deliberate handball. Brighton pulled a goal back immediately after Alisson was dismissed but the hosts held on to clinch an important victory. Van Dijk added: 'Obviously we're disappointed with the way we ended the game. We conceded a bit of a strange free-kick, the red card for Alisson, and we should have done better. 'But it's not easy to play every couple of days and make sure we are more than 100 per cent. 'But we try to do that. The beginning of the first half was good, towards the end of the first half I think we should have done better. 'But it's something we have to look at and try to improve. They are a very good side, you have to give them credit. 'They played well, brave and tried to get out of our press and at times it worked. So you have to give them credit. But we wanted the three points and got them. Advertisement Advertisement 'We have to show character, we have to fight. It was not an easy game, especially at the end. We had to dig deep and we did.' As sea engulfs coastline, Indonesians pay high price to shield homes - TheChronicleHerald.ca Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:18 PM PST By Willy Kurniawan TAMBAKLOROK, Indonesia (Reuters) - Indonesian fisherman Miskan says the once-abundant catches he used to enjoy have been dwindling in recent years on this stretch of the Java Sea. His meager income is being further strained by having to borrow cash to shore up his home against lapping waves coming further inland on this vulnerable coastline. "If you have a house on land and then work at sea, it's hard. But now I work at sea and I live at sea," said Miskan, 44, who uses one name, speaking outside his small home, where a caged songbird hangs from the rafters. His community's battle against inundation, blamed on both man-made environmental destruction and the impact of climate change, reflects the risks posed to millions of people by a sinking coastline on Indonesia's most populous island of Java. The flooding in Tambaklorok in Central Java province is now so bad that Miskan uses a window to enter his home since his door is half blocked by dirt piled up to keep out the sea. "It's hard to save money when you're a fisherman," he said. Miskan had to borrow from neighbors to pay roughly 7.2 million rupiah ($500) to hire workers to truck in earth. Thousands of people in Asia and Europe joined rallies demanding more action on climate change on Friday, aiming to force political leaders to come up with urgent solutions at a United Nations conference that starts on Monday. Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands of islands, has about 81,000 km (50,300 miles) of coastline, making it particularly vulnerable to climate change along with neighbors like the Philippines. It is also home to more than a fifth of the world's mangrove forests, which naturally help keep out high tidal waters. But for years, coastal communities have chopped down mangrove forests to clear the way for fish and shrimp farms, and for rice paddies. The government has scrambled to work with environmental groups to replant mangroves, build dykes and relocate threatened villages. But many residents, often poor fishermen, are either reluctant to leave their homes or simply have nowhere to go further inland on Java, home to around 140 million people. "It is impossible for us to move due to economic reasons, so even though there's tidal floods, I'll stay," said Abdul Hadi, whose house in Tambaklorok is now below sea levels and the road. Another villager, Solihatun, 51, regularly needs her roof removed so that the height of the walls can be raised as earth is spread in and around her house. She says the flooding is sometimes so bad her grandchildren can swim in the living room. "Thank God for bank loans, so it's easier to pay off the debt every month," she said, adding she had spent over 5 million rupiah for the last renovation. Feri Prihantoro of the Bina Karta Lestari Foundation, a non-government organization (NGO) focused on sustainable development, said the area's coastline was particularly vulnerable to flooding and high tides due to land subsidence because of the extraction of underground water and higher sea levels. Further along the Java coast, Jakarta is also prone to flooding with two-fifths of the city lying below sea level. With this partly in mind, President Joko Widodo announced in August a $33 billion plan to move the capital to Borneo island. Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:53 PM PST Liverpool equalled a club record as they moved 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League following a hard-fought 2-1 win against Brighton on Saturday. Virgil van Dijik first-half brace looked to have put Jurgen Klopp's side on their way to a convincing victory, but when Lewis Dunk struck a superb free-kick 14 minutes from time after Alisson Becker saw red for a deliberate handball, a tense finish ensued at Anfield. The Reds did manage to hold on, and as a result moved a mammoth 11 points clear of Manchester City after Pep Guardiola's men dropped two points at Newcastle. Liverpool have now gone 31 games without defeat in the top flight, the first time they have done so since between the period May 1987 and March 1988. Should the Reds either draw or win at Goodison Park, the home of their arch-rivals Everton, on Wednesday they will eclipse that record. Speaking after the game, Klopp said: "It was unnecessary [for the game to be nervy at the end], of course, because we had unbelievable chances. "Their keeper made some good saves. It was difficult this game because Brighton are a good football side. They put players between the lines. "They put so many players there so it's difficult to defend. Adrian comes in with cold feet and cold hands but made two really good saves. The boys threw everything on the pitch. "It's unbelievable how much they want to win. They made it a really special win." Meanwhile, Klopp refused to get carried away by his side's big lead at the top, insisting they 'don't think' about these kind of things so early in the season. He added; "It's how it is. But if Leicester win tomorrow we are eight points. We don't think about these things. "It was just to win this game. We have one more day between now and the next game so we have to use that and then we try again.' China due to introduce face scans for mobile users - BBC News Posted: 30 Nov 2019 05:09 PM PST People in China are now required to have their faces scanned when registering new mobile phone services, as the authorities seek to verify the identities of the country's hundreds of millions of internet users. The regulation, announced in September, was due to come into effect Sunday. The government says it wants to "protect the legitimate rights and interest of citizens in cyberspace". China already uses facial recognition technology to survey its population. It is a world leader in such technologies but its intensifying use across the country in recent years has sparked debate. What are the new rules? When signing up for new mobile or mobile data contracts, people already are required to show their national identification card (as required in many countries) and have their photos taken. But now, they will also have their faces scanned in order to verify that they are a genuine match for the ID provided. China has for years been trying to enforce rules to ensure that everyone using the internet does so under their "real-name" identities. In 2017, for example. new rules required internet platforms to verify a user's true identity before letting them post online content. The new regulation for telecom operators was framed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as a way to "strengthen" this system and ensure that the government can identify all mobile phone users. Most Chinese internet users access the web via their phones. Jeffrey Ding, a researcher on Chinese artificial intelligence at Oxford University, said that one of China's motivations for getting rid of anonymous phone numbers and internet accounts was to boost cyber-security and reduce internet fraud. But another likely motivation, he said, was to better track the population: "It's connected to a very centralised push to try to keep tabs on everyone, or that's at least the ambition." Are people worried? When the regulations were announced in September, the Chinese media did not make a big deal of it. But online, hundreds of social media users voiced concerns about the increasing amount of data being held on them. "People are being more and more strictly monitored," one user of the Sina Weibo microblogging website said. "What are they [the government] afraid of?" Many others complained that China had already seen too many data breaches. "Before, thieves knew what your name was, in the future they'll know what you'll look like," said one user, receiving more than 1,000 likes. Another criticised the policy, saying: "This is being implemented without the consent of the public." Another said they often received scam calls from people who knew their name and address, and asked: "Will they be able to tell what I look like now?" But others were less cynical, saying that the move was simply in line with "technological progress". China already extensively censors and polices the web, removing and blocking content it does not want its citizens to see and talk about. How widespread is facial recognition in China?China is often described as a surveillance state - in 2017 it had 170 million CCTV cameras in place across the country with the goal of installing an estimated 400 million new ones by 2020. The country is also setting up a "social credit" system to keep score of the conduct and public interactions of all its citizens in one database. The aim is that by 2020, everyone in China will be enrolled in a vast national database that compiles fiscal and government information to give a "ranking" for each citizen. Facial recognition plays a key role in the surveillance system and it has been lauded as a way of catching fugitives. Last year, media noted that police were able to pick a fugitive out of a crowd of 60,000 at a concert using the technology. In the western region of Xinjiang, where up to a million Uighur Muslims and other ethnic minorities have been detained for what the authorities call "re-education", surveillance cameras use facial recognition to specifically track Uighurs, based on their appearance, the New York Times reported earlier this year. But facial recognition is increasingly becoming a part of daily life and commercial transactions in China. It's used more and more, for example, to pay in shops and supermarkets. However there has been some blow-back. Earlier this year, a university professor sued a wildlife park for making facial recognition mandatory for visitors - sparking a wider debate about the state's mass collection of data on its citizens. In September, the Chinese government said it planned to "curb and regulate" the use of facial recognition technology in schools after reports a university was trialling using it to monitor the attendance and behaviour of students. Mr Ding said it was clear that there is increasing backlash against China's widespread adoption of facial recognition technology. Such criticism used to focus on fears of data theft, hacking and abuses by commercial companies, he said. However, increasingly, citizens seem willing to criticise how the Chinese government might exploit such data to track the population. This Video Of BTS' 2019 MMAs Performance Is Absolutely Mind-Blowing - Elite Daily Posted: 30 Nov 2019 05:03 PM PST The 2019 Melon Music Awards kicked off on Nov. 30, and ARMYs already knew before it started that the show was going to be an epic one, thanks to BTS' highly-anticipated performance. The guys never disappoint, and this year was no different. Sadly, many of us had to watch the action from our couches, but this video of BTS' 2019 MMAs performance will make you feel like you were there in person. Before you watch, here's a fair warning: The guys smashed this one out of the park and the perfection of their performance is almost unbelievable. Seriously, how do they nail it every time? In 2018, Jungkook, V, Jimin, Jin, Suga, RM, and J-Hope performed a medley of their Love Yourself hits, "Fake Love," "Airplane pt.2," and "IDOL," at the MMAs, and blew fans away with their stage energy and callouts to their Korean culture. BTS' MMAs performance wound up being a whopping 20 minutes last year and yet, still, it wasn't quite enough. ARMYs could watch BTS perform forever and not get bored. This year, when the MMAs hit Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, Korea, the BTS boys did what they do best and delivered another show-stopping performance with some of their biggest hits. In addition to nailing chart-toppers like "Boy In Luv," "Dionysus," and "Fake Love" with their signature vocals, the Korean boy band also brought the dancing prowess to take their performance to the next level. I mean, look. At. These. Moves. To kick off their set list, RM performed "Persona" first before the group blessed ARMYs with a rendition of their 2014 single "Boy In Luv." For their third and fourth track, the group then turned to their 2019 album Map of the Soul: Persona with a space-inspired performance of "Mikrokosmos" as well as "Dionysus." For the latter, the boys used ancient Greece as an inspiration with multiple on-theme props, including a faux Trojan horse that RM rode out on to perform his verse. After these big group performances, individual members then showcased their vocals and stage presence with solo renditions of some of their biggest songs. Dressed in all white, Jimin did a solo version of "I Need U." Next up, Jungkook upped the ante on the visuals and choreography by memorably performing his "Save Me" solo on water. Last but not least, J-Hope closed out the BTS set with an electronic rendition of "Fake Love" complete with dancers and dramatic strobe lights. It was a big night for the guys, as they also swept the main four categories of the evening, taking home Artist of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year with Map of the Soul: Persona, and Song of the Year with "Boy With Luv." Before the event, they were also recognized as one of Melon's Top 10 artists of the year along with fellow groups EXO and BOL4. It's safe to say that their memorable performance paired with these prestigious awards made Saturday a night to remember for ARMYs. Third and goal: Duke football looking for explosive plays against Miami - Duke Chronicle Posted: 30 Nov 2019 04:12 PM PST With the Blue Devils' season coming to a close, the Blue Zone gives you three keys to the season finale against Miami: Hit the home run play early and oftenDuke by no means has an explosive, high-powered offense that keeps opposing defensive coordinators up at night. In fact, the Blue Devils rank second to last in the ACC in offensive yards per game, all the more reason to invigorate the offense early on against the Hurricanes. This upcoming Saturday will give Duke a chance to take advantage of a demoralized Miami defense coming off a game where they gave up 30 points to a non-power five opponent, Florida International. If the Blue Devils have any hope of sneaking into a bowl game, they will need to create the big play. Quarterback Quentin Harris has shown promise throwing the deep ball, and Deon Jackson has the speed and vision to slash the Hurricanes, as he would surely love to bust out another 75 yard touchdown run this year. The big plays will open up the Duke playbook and keep Miami on its heels on the defensive side of the ball. Pressure the Miami quarterback (whoever it may be)It has been a revolving door under center for Miami all season. Head coach Manny Diaz cannot seem to figure out which of his quarterbacks is the right fit, constantly pinballing between redshirt sophomore N'Kosi Perry and redshirt freshman Jarren Williams. It's anybody's guess who will be calling the shots Saturday, as Williams was granted the start against FIU a week ago and rewarded Diaz with a hat trick of interceptions. Now here is a job for Duke's pass rushers. With neither of the two quarterbacks able to get into any sort of rhythm this season, the Blue Devils need to take advantage of their inexperience. Leading the charge should be defensive end Victor Dimukeje, who needs to tack on a couple more sacks to his season total of 8.5 and flush Miami's quarterback out of the pocket to secure a Duke victory. Duke offensive lineThe Hurricanes' defensive line got shredded last weekend against the Panthers, but they still rank seventh in the country in tackles for loss. This matchup is of particular interest because the Blue Devil offensive line had been solid the entire year leading up to the game against Syracuse. Since then, partially due to injuries, Harris has been sacked nine times over two games, making it almost impossible for the Duke offense to sustain a drive. For the Blue Devils to come out on top, this beaten up offensive line will need to step up. Miami linebacker Shaquille Quarterman and defensive lineman Gregory Rousseau each have 15.5 tackles for loss and will look to set up camp in the backfield Saturday.
