Devils score own goal in OT, Maple Leafs win 6th straight - Yahoo Sports Posted: 27 Dec 2019 11:57 PM PST NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Damon Severson had never scored an overtime goal in the NHL, and this wasn't how he envisioned his first. The Devils defenseman backhanded the puck into his own net with 2:22 left in overtime, gifting the Toronto Maple Leafs a 5-4 win over New Jersey on Friday night for their season-best sixth straight victory. Severson got the puck after Toronto's William Nylander lost control of it driving toward New Jersey's net. The 25-year-old Severson inadvertently beat goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood while trying to clear the puck out of danger. Nylander was credited with the goal. "I was just trying to protect the puck," said Severson, who was consoled by teammates while leaving the ice. "I was not trying to do anything with it. Protect the puck and then get it out of harm's way. I just hit it by accident into our own net." Nylander set up the play by taking the puck from Jack Hughes. It's Toronto's longest winning streak since November of 2017. "It's nice to get some puck luck and have bounces go your way," Maple Leafs goaltender Michael Hutchinson said after making 24 saves. "Start of the season, felt I was playing well and making other teams have to make good plays to score goals but just as a team we weren't getting those fortunate bounces to go our way, so it's nice to get those bounces. We need to create our own luck and bounces. Zach Hyman, Ilya Mikheyev, Kasperi Kapanen and John Tavares scored for Toronto, which witnessed a scary moment in the third period when Mikheyev sustained a deep gash on his right wrist from Hughes' skate. "It was obviously scary there, seeing that much blood,'' Tavares said. "Obviously, a guy that we care deeply about and was having a great night and playing tremendous for us, so thoughts are with him.'' Mikheyev was being held for observation at a hospital. Nico Hischier, Nitita Gusev, Kyle Palmieri and Jesper Bratt scored for New Jersey, and Blackwood made 32 saves. "Obviously, it is a tough one to swallow, but it is what it is," Palmieri said. "Mistakes. You are going to be the hero some nights and but it's about coming in the next day and being ready." Tavares tied it at 4 with 11:45 left in the third period with a tap-in power-play goal from Blackwood's crease. Nylander made the pass to set it up. The teams combined for seven goals during a wide-open first 40 minutes. Palmieri and Bratt got the last two a little more than three minutes apart to give the Devils a 4-3 lead. Palmieri scored his 15th of the season on a point-blank shot shortly after lifting Tyson Barrie's stick to take the puck and tie it at 3. Palmieri jumped on a center-ice turnover by Kapanen to set up the go-ahead goal by Bratt at 10:11. Hyman and Mikheyev scored 19 seconds apart late in the first period to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead. With the Devils on a two-man advantage, Gusev tied it at 1:42 of the second period. Kapanen put Toronto ahead with a top-shelf shot at 5:18, but the Devils countered with two over the next five minutes for their second lead. Hischier had scored the game's first goal early. NOTES: The teams will play two more times this season, both in Toronto (Jan. 14, Mar. 17). ... Toronto had 19 shots in the first period. It was still seven shy of its season high for a period, which it has done twice. ... Toronto is 12-4 since Sheldon Keefe replaced Mike Babcock as coach. ... Devils are 2-6 in overtime. Wild overcomes coach's challenge, controversial goal to edge Avalanche - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 27 Dec 2019 10:27 PM PST DENVER – Two verdicts from the NHL determined goals in Friday's showdown between the Wild and Avalanche at Pepsi Center. Both went against the Wild, but neither sabotaged the team. Instead, it overcame each ruling to pull out a 6-4 victory in Colorado to open its post-holiday break schedule with its third win in its last four games. "I do think that the guys never think they're out of it at this stage," coach Bruce Boudreau said. First, the Wild had a goal wiped off the scoreboard after it appeared to go up 3-2 in the second period. Defenseman Ryan Suter handed off to center Joel Eriksson Ek, who scored off the rush. But the Avalanche issued a coach's challenge to determine if the play was offsides, and it was – with winger Marcus Foligno still in the offensive zone during a line change while the Wild entered the attacking zone at the other end of the blue line. "We thought it was offsides," Boudreau said. "We could see Marcus was inside the zone, and we were coming in at the same time." Before the period ended, Colorado evened it at 3 on a redirect off center Nathan MacKinnon's skate that goalie Devan Dubnyk protested immediately. Again, though, the call went against the Wild since the goal stood. "It's a tough call," Boudreau said. "He moves his skate. I thought he moved his skate forward. But I'm not the one making the call. You're allowed to redirect it and I think if you keep your skate blade on the ice, things can happen. But it did look to me that he turned and moved his leg forward. But obviously Toronto didn't think so." Despite the adversity, the Wild answered back – scoring three times in the third period after it fell behind 4-3. "You just have to keep pushing and keep going," winger Mats Zuccarello said. The win was significant for other reasons, too.
"We believe that we belong up in the division," goalie Devan Dubnyk said. "I think that we've shown it in the way we've played the last long period of time here, and that's what we have to believe and that's what we do believe. These are big points."
Zuccarello reached double digits in goal (10) to stay at a point-per-game pace over his past five. Winger Kevin Fiala has 15 points in his last 17 games after a two-assist night. Center Eric Staal leads the team in goals after potting his 15th and seventh in his last eight games. Defenseman Carson Soucy boasts eight points in his last 12 following his first-period goal. After notching his third assist in the last four games, defenseman Jonas Brodin's 16 helpers on the season are his most since he set a career-high of 22 in 2016-17. And fellow blue liner Ryan Suter has 16 points in his last 19 games. His 13 assists since Nov.19 are tops among NHL defensemen.
The schedule, however, now shifts home where the Wild will play 16 of its next 19 starting Sunday when it hosts the Islanders at Xcel Energy Center. Ducks' 3-goal barrage in 2nd leads to 4-3 win over Vegas - USA TODAY Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:57 PM PST ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Cam Fowler had a goal and an assist while the Anaheim Ducks scored three goals in 1:37 midway through the second period of a 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday night. Adam Henrique and Max Comtois also scored and Jakob Silfverberg had two assists during the decisive barrage by the Ducks in both Pacific Division clubs' first game back from the Christmas break. Anaheim trailed 1-0 before capitalizing on a two-man advantage and the ensuing momentum to match the third-fastest three-goal spree in franchise history. Devin Shore added a third-period goal and John Gibson made 26 saves for the Ducks, who beat Vegas for just the second time in 10 meetings since the Golden Knights joined the NHL in 2017. Nate Schmidt had two goals, Jonathan Marchessault also scored and Malcolm Subban stopped 14 shots for the Golden Knights, who had never lost in four previous trips to Honda Center along with their healthy contingent of traveling fans. Schmidt scored twice in the final 1:52. After snapping his personal 21-game goal drought, the defenseman added his second with 5.7 seconds left — too late to stop first-place Vegas from losing two straight in regulation for the first time since Nov. 25. After a scoreless first period, William Karlsson took advantage of a defensive mistake and sprung Marchessault for an unimpeded breakaway. His shot slipped barely inside the top corner above Gibson's glove hand and rattled home for his 13th goal of the season. The Ducks' offense awoke during a two-man advantage for 46 seconds in the second period. Henrique scored late in the 5-on-3 sequence, and Fowler ripped home a power-play goal 83 seconds later. Just 14 seconds after that, the 20-year-old Comtois made an exceptional play in front of the net to tip a long shot by Jacob Larsson for his sixth career NHL goal. Shore's goal gave him 100 career points. NOTES: The Ducks got their two-man advantage when captain Ryan Getzlaf was accidentally high-sticked in the face by Tomas Nosek. Getzlaf is among the roughly 25 remaining NHL players who don't wear visors, and he went to the dressing room for help with his bloodied face. He returned later in the period. Visors have been mandatory for new players since the start of the 2013-14 season, but veterans who didn't wear a visor before the change are allowed to keep them off. ... Rickard Rakell missed his second straight game after incurring an upper-body injury before the break, but both Getzlaf and Silfverberg returned after missing games with apparent cases of the flu. ... The Ducks scored three goals in 51 seconds and three goals in 96 seconds in late 2010. ... The Ducks visit Vegas for a matinee on New Year's Eve. Mobile Christian 4-star 2021 LB Deontae Lawson commits to Alabama - AL.com Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:05 PM PST Four-star 2021 linebacker Deontae Lawson committed to Alabama late Friday afternoon over SEC West rivals Auburn and LSU. "It's crazy," Lawson told AL.com. "I felt the time was right. I can't wait to fit into that program and be a part of what coach (Nick) Saban has built. I was just ready to do it. It feels awesome." The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Lawson led Mobile Christian to the Class 3A championship game earlier this month. He was a first-team ASWA Class 3A All-State selection and a first-team AL.com All-Coastal Alabama selection. Lawson finished the 2019 season with 101 tackles solo tackles and 33 assists. He also had a sack and four tackles for a loss. He played an increasing role on offense, rushing for 10 touchdowns out of the Wildcat for the Leopards. He could play either inside or outside for the Tide. "I think it's going to be wherever I feel more comfortable and wherever they feel more comfortable putting me," Lawson said. "If I grow more, I will probably stay inside. If I stay the same height, I could play outside. I'm fine wherever." Lawson is the No. 8 junior in the state, according to the 247 composite rankings, and the No. 16 player at his position in the country. He received his first offer as a freshman from Tennessee. His numerous other offers include Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Oregon and Florida State. "It's been a good process," he said of the long recruiting trek. "I've loved it. I'm still loving it. I know it's not over yet, but I feel like this is 100 percent." Mobile Christian head coach Ronnie Cottrell said Lawson is quite simply "a winner." "He is a guy who is extremely competitive," Cottrell said. "He shows up. When the game is at the highest point, he plays. What is remarkable is I think he has a very high ceiling. He'll have a lot of development that will occur over the next couple of years, and I know he wanted to go to a program that would help him with that." Cottrell described Lawson as a "complete player." Mobile Christian defensive coordinator Gus Smith compared Lawson to another player he coached – former Daphne High and Alabama standout Ryan Anderson. "When Ryan got there (to Alabama), it took him a few years to get going and find his place," Smith said. "That could happen to Deontae. It's hard to go to Alabama and play right away. He's such a likeable kid and a hard worker. I moved him to inside linebacker this year. I'm not sure he couldn't play that at Alabama and be a C.J. Mosley-type kid. With him and (Theodore LB and Alabama signee) Demouy (Kennedy) on the same side of the ball up there, it will be great to watch." Both Smith and Cottrell said, with Lawson, Alabama is getting much more than just athletic ability. "He is a great teammate," Smith said. "He's electric to be around. Kids have stars in their eyes when they are watching him and talking to him. He just has that vibe. Not only is he 6-foot-3, 214, he's the nicest kid, the smartest kid and the hardest working kid. He's just got 'it.'" Lawson said he spoke to Saban on Friday afternoon. "He told me they were excited to have me," Lawson said. "It's been a Merry Christmas." Bergeron's 3rd straight 2-goal game lifts Bruins over Sabres - USA TODAY Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:57 PM PST BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Patrice Bergeron scored two goals for the third consecutive game, and the Boston Bruins beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 on Friday night. Bergeron became the fifth player in Bruins history to score two goals in at least three games and the first Bruin since Cam Neely in 1988-89 to accomplish the feat. Brandon Carlo also scored and Jaroslav Halak made 26 saves for Boston. It was Halak's third shutout of the season. Linus Ullmark made 22 saves for Buffalo, which has lost five of its last six games. Bergeron opened the scoring with 21.3 seconds left in the first. With Marcus Johansson in the penalty box for holding, Bergeron finished a tic-tac-toe sequence from David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand, scoring on a low one-timer from the slot. That line connected in similar fashion on Boston's second goal with 1:34 left in the second. This time, it began with Pastrnak picking up the puck after a turnover by Jimmy Vesey. Pastrnak fed Marchand, who was in close on a 2-on-1 with Bergeron, and Bergeron had an easy finish. Both goalies made their share of big saves. Ullmark stretched wide with his glove to stop Danton Heinen 1:40 into the game, and Halak had a big glove save of his own on Johansson with 3:35 left in the first. Halak also did a fine job of laying on the ice to cover up a potential loose puck with several Sabres buzzing nearby five minutes into the third. Buffalo had some positive moments in the third while attempting to get back in the game but was repeatedly thwarted by Halak and the Bruins. Buffalo outshot Boston 10-5 in the final period. Carlo added an empty-net goal for Boston with 1:54 remaining. NOTES: Sabres RW Jeff Skinner played in his 700th career game but left four minutes into the third with an injury and did not return. Skinner was attempting to check Pastrnak but clearly took the worst of the collision. ... Bruins D Torey Krug was placed on injured reserve earlier Friday with an upper-body injury. Krug was injured in the second period of Boston's 7-3 win over the Washington Capitals on Monday following a hard hit by Tom Wilson. ... Buffalo recalled C Curtis Lazar from the AHL's Rochester Americans before the game. It was his fourth recall of the season. ... Sabres D Marco Scandella missed the game with an illness. Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:38 PM PST "Name a day a woman always dreams of?" That's the question one man in North Carolina used to begin a "Family Feud"-inspired game that ended with a marriage proposal. Joshua Powell, from Fayetteville, proposed to his now-fiancée Kiana Myrick while playing a "Family Feud"-style game with their family at a Christmas party. Powell asked Myrick a series of wedding-related, rapid-fire questions, such as, "Name something a woman wears all-white to." He eventually worked his way to the final question: "How would you finish this: Will you marry me?" After a few seconds, a laughing Myrick said, "Yes, I will?" She appeared to believe the question was still part of the game, facing away from Powell to continue playing. "I just put my head down and kind of just focused, it didn't even dawn on me that he was about to propose," Myrick told CBS affiliate WNCN. Only after he got down on one knee did she get emotional, wiping away tears with her Christmas sweater. "I love you with all of my heart," Powell said during the proposal. "A lot of people may say we're young. I say, 'Life is too short.'" After the video was posted to Facebook, it garnered more than 1.6 million views. Powell told WNCN he first met Myrick in high school, in their freshman history class eight years ago. "It was like a light in the room," Powell said. "As soon as I saw her I said, 'OK, I have to get to know her.'" They later went to prom and won a high school pageant together. Powell said in his proposal he's looking forward to spending "88 more" years with Myrick. Powell's mother, who posted the viral video, recently battled breast cancer, and he wanted to make sure she would be there for the big day. The couple plan to get married in 2021, after they both graduate from college. According to their Facebook pages, Powell is studying criminal justice at North Carolina A&T State University and Myrick studies at the Duke University School of Nursing. They said their shared faith is an integral part of their relationship. "With our faith and how strong we believe in God and Him being able to pull us through everything that we go through, I feel like other people if they have that same faith and same belief then they can succeed at anything that they want to do," Myrick said. 8 female entrepreneurs on how to set goals for a new decade - Fast Company Posted: 27 Dec 2019 05:57 PM PST We spoke with eight leaders about how they're setting themselves up for success in 2020. You've seen the memes circulating Instagram, but in case you need yet another reminder: 2020 isn't just a new year. It's a new decade. The end of one 10-year stretch and the start of a new one creates the opportunity for many to think about long-term goals. Since most career-driven people have experience focusing on short-term wins, thinking more holistically about our vision and aspirations can feel somewhat foreign. But it can be especially useful. Pinpointing our North Star, especially when it's far out of reach, can guide our choices and path. Here, female leaders share effective strategies for this sort of thinking: Write the why—then the howAmbitious people spend a lot of time developing strategies on how they will arrive at a goal. While being action-oriented is smart, event planner Emore Campbell says when thinking of long-term objectives, honing in on the "why" is more impactful. Think about it: You may know how to bake a mean batch of chocolate chip cookies, but you likely aren't motivated to do so until a friend needs a pick-me-up. Or, you understand how to write a brief, but you won't put your heart into it unless you have a driving purpose. "Every goal-setting professional should be writing down the motivation for the goal," Campbell says. "This and only this will create the longevity and direction for the 'how.'" Study yourselfBefore an important presentation or when you're considering hiring a new employee, you take time to study notes, references, and information. But how much time you dedicate to understanding what makes your brain tick? Tiara Zolnierz, cofounder of EnrichHER, recommends setting a weekly date to focus on our internal drivers, strengths, weakness, and beyond. "Writing in a journal as soon as you open your eyes in the morning is a perfect way to see your mental patterns, aka your inner thoughts," she says. "Once you understand how you are currently programmed, you can reprogram yourself." This reserved space for cultivating self-awareness can be beneficial in every aspect of our lives. By discovering patterns, hiccups, or shortcomings, we can tackle challenges we didn't notice previously. Share your 10-year targetIf you're at the helm of a company or a team, you have a slew of people looking to you for guidance. We can either find this soapbox to be nerve-racking, or use it as an opportunity to become a human megaphone. After all, one of the best ways to actually meet your decade-long goals is to broadcast them. It also ensures those alongside you are aligned. "When we share our target with every team member, it empowers our team to make decisions that are remarkably consistent with our vision, and we don't tend to get off course," says cofounder of Saalt, Cherie Hoeger. "It also gets everyone thinking and dreaming big." Work backwards—without strict timelinesWhen you imagine 10 years from now, you see yourself as an entrepreneur, running a company you're passionate about. Great! You have the vision. But to actually achieve it, founder and CEO of OWA Haircare Kailey Bradt says you need to backtrack by setting immediate and intermediate goals along the way. This helps to reinforce the fact that a mega goals don't happen overnight. But while setting roadmaps will keep us focused, they shouldn't be strict. Rather, consider making them a within-a-few-months target. "Don't stress yourself out over timelines you set for yourself that will result in more anxiousness when you don't accomplish something in time," she says. "This is something I personally learned the hard way. However, when I look bad on just the past three years, I cannot believe what I've accomplished. I realized I set those irrelevant timelines for myself and, although I didn't hit all of them, I was resilient." Utilize micro-rewardsIf you only give yourself a pat on the back (or a vacation) when you reach that 10-year goal, you're going to hit a wall fast. Instead, discover ways to delight yourself along the way. As Susie Wang, the founder and chief creative at 100 Percent Pure, explains, people are prone to give up on their goals when they feel overwhelming to accomplish. "All goals should also have micro-goals that lead to the major goal. . . . Each time you achieve the micro goal, give yourself a reward," she suggests. Wang uses a massage as a way to pause and acknowledge a smaller aspiration was met. What's yours? Make a few VIPsNo, this doesn't mean upgrading yourself to business class for every flight. Liz Bohannon, CEO and cofounder of Sseko Designs, defines VIP as "Very Important Promises" you make to yourself. In an effort to reach your long-term vision, you must make choices along the way that are specific, measurable, actionable, and relevant. Bohannon says the language of making a promise—unlike that of creating a goal—triggers our desire to be a person of our word. It also helps us cut through the chatter that doesn't matter as much as we think it does. "When something comes across my plate, I can easily reference my VIPs and quickly evaluate if it will help me fulfill one of my promises," she says. "When you get crystal clear on your own promises, you are less susceptible to the energy vampire of comparison and other people's opinions." Figure out how to work lessYep, you read that right: Work less, not more. As founder of The Yoga Expo Fort Lauderdale and Bizzy Yogi, Arianne Traverson reminds us that cutting back on work days have been proven to make us more effective and productive with our time. Many companies have transitioned to a four-day-a-week model, streamlining employee attention in reduced hours. When we give ourselves time to disconnect from the grind, we lead a more balanced existence. And perhaps more importantly, we won't burn out in five years, half way to our goal. "A business that makes you happy means you'll multiply that, and it'll spill over into your personal relationships, too," says Traverson. "I see people taking the reins of their lives with models that allow for more travel, location independence, and change for the world." Consider not setting goalsIf you've never really been the type to set goals, why do it now? Or, if you've always set goals, only to continuously miss them, why keep disappointing yourself? Sometimes, understanding what works best for us it is the key. As founder and principal of her own public relations firm, Stephanie Wolf suggests considering planning less and improvising more. "You know that one random phone call that led to that event that led to that amazing and unexpected client, business opportunity, or new partner? Some of our best career years are the ones that flow, where we are open to all opportunities," she says. "With so much in flux in the world, the 2020s may just be the perfect time to remain open to it all." Ten-man City let two-goal lead slip at Wolves - Manchester City FC Posted: 27 Dec 2019 05:27 PM PST Wolves came back from 2-0 down to beat 10-man City 3-2 at Molineux and deliver another significant blow in our bid to win a third-straight Premier League title. Ederson's early red card saw us suffer the worst possible start to the game - but a Raheem Sterling double put us 2-0 up against the odds. But three second-half goals - including two in the final eight minutes - saw Wolves complete a league double over City on a desperately disappointing night in the Midlands. What happenedAfter a cagey opening period, the game exploded into life when Ederson was shown a red card for bringing down Diogo Jota on the edge of the area. Connor Coady's sublime ball over the top put Jota clear, he knocked it past the onrushing Ederson who clipped the Wolves man and left the referee with little choice but to brandish a straight red. Claudio Bravo was called upon, with Sergio Aguero sacrificed just 13 minutes into his first start in more than a month. It was a disastrous moment that made an already difficult assignment look even harder. But this City side is packed with character, and 13 minutes later we ahead after a period of chaos and confusion. Riyad Mahrez went on a mazy run inside the area and was taken down by Leander Dendoncker. Martin Atkinson initially waved City's claims for a penalty away, but a lengthy VAR check overturned the decision and a spot kick was justifiably given. Raheem Sterling stepped up to take it – but his penalty was saved by Rui Patricio. However, it was ordered to be retaken after encroachment by Wolves players and Sterling stepped up again – despite Pep Guardiola seemingly gesturing from the bench to change the taker – and again Patricio made the save. This time, though, Sterling tapped home from the rebound to put City ahead. Wolves has the first big chance of the second half. Raul Jimenez's brilliant scooped pass put Jota through but his effort from close range went over the bar. He should have done better. And City took full advantage of the home side's profligacy when Sterling doubled our lead. Kevin De Bruyne's instinctive pass put the forward through on goal and he produced a quite brilliant chip to beat Patricio and send the away end into a frenzy of emotion. Traore halved the deficit when his low strike went in on off the post, before Wolves equalised with eight minutes left on the clock when Jimenez poked home from Traore's cross after Benjamin Mendy had his pocket picked on the byline. And Wolves found a winner with a minute remaining when Matt Doherty curled one into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Sterling hit the bar with a free-kick from 20 yards, denying him a hat-trick and City what would have been a memorable equaliser, and Wolves saw the game out to deliver what could well be a fatal blow to our already slender title hopes. StatzoneSterling now has 59 Premier League goals for City, moving him ahead of Carlos Tevez on the list of City's goalscorers. Only Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure have scored more for City. What it meansThe result sees City remain third, one point behind Leicester, who lost at home to Liverpool on Boxing Day. The Merseysiders have a healthy lead at the top. They have dropped just two points all season and are currently 13 points ahead of Leicester with a game in hand. Next upCity host Sheffield United on Sunday at 6pm, meaning Guardiola and his backroom team have less than 48 hours to prepare for our next assignment. It's a difficult task and Guardiola is likely to make significant changes when the Blades visit the Etihad given his players have so little time to rest and recover from tonight's exertions. India's internet shutdowns costing mobile carriers millions of rupees in lost revenue - Reuters Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:35 AM PST NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian mobile operators are losing around 24.5 million rupees ($350,000) in revenue every hour they are forced to suspend internet services on government orders to control protests against a new citizenship law, a top lobby group said on Friday. Countrywide protests have raged for three weeks after India's parliament passed legislation which gives minorities from neighboring Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh a path to citizenship but excludes Muslims. That, coupled with a plan for a national register of citizens, are seen by critics as anti-Muslim moves by the Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To quell protests, government has deployed thousands of police as well intermittently ordered mobile data shutdowns at a time people have used social media such as Instagram and TikTok to wage a parallel battle online. Such internet suspensions have been criticized by internet freedom activists. On Friday, mobile internet was ordered shut in at least 18 districts in northern Uttar Pradesh state, a telecoms industry source told Reuters. A Reuters witness received a text message from an internet service provider announcing that home broadband services on the outskirts of capital New Delhi will be unavailable for 24 hours, till the morning of Dec 28. Indians consume an average 9.8 gigabyte of data per month on their smartphones, the highest in the world, according to Swedish telecoms gearmaker Ericsson (ERICb.ST). The country is the biggest market by users for social media firm Facebook (FB.O) and its messenger WhatsApp. Internet shutdowns should not be first course of action, said the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which counts mobile carriers Bharti Airtel (BRTI.NS), Vodafone Idea (VODA.NS) and Reliance Industries' (RELI.NS) Jio Infocomm as its members. "We've highlighted the cost of these shutdowns," COAI director general Rajan Mathews told Reuters. "According to our computation at the end of 2019, with the increase in online activities we believe the cost (of internet shutdowns) is close to 24.5 million rupees for an hour of internet shutdown." The revenue losses will pile on to the woes of India's telecoms sector, bruised by a price war and saddled with a combined $13 billion in overdue payments following a Supreme Court ruling in October. Bharti, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio did not respond to emails seeking comment. The bans follows an unprecedented shutdown of internet and text messaging services in parts of Delhi last week, widening a communications clampdown in restive areas stretching from disputed Kashmir to the northeast. Internet services in Indian Kashmir were suspended for over 140 days since New Delhi relegated its status to a federal administered territory from a state, making it the longest such shutdown in a democracy, according to digital rights group Access Now.
