Lion gets into a fight with tiger in viral video. Guess who won - India Today Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:38 PM PST A video of a fight between a tiger and a lion has surfaced on social media and is swiftly going viral. The 24-second clip was shared on Twitter by Indian Forest Service officer Susanta Nanda on Sunday. In a grassland, a tiger was seen sitting at rest while lions and other animals roamed around the enclosure. One of the lions, however, appeared to be interested in engaging in a battle with the tiger in a show of strength. The lion walked towards the tiger and struck it with its paw after biting on its neck. Immediately, the tiger retaliated and struck the lion on its face with its paw, as the latter landed several metres ahead. It walked away from the scenario after its defeat. "When it comes to paw and claw striking, a tiger acts like a boxer. This lion realised it in a hard way. Swipe of a tiger paw is powerful enough to smash a cow's skull. Watch the poor lion in slow motion," Susanta Nanda said in his caption. Watch the video here:
The internet is stupefied after watching the video as it has already been viewed over 13,000 times. Netizens shared their opinions about the clash between the tiger and the lion in the comments section. Some responses were quite funny as well. "Tiger is the heavier and the strongest. What makes lion the king is his ferociousness. He fights till his last breath with the same ferociousness. Tiger uses both claws to fight, Lions only one. Lion never concedes defeat, will fight till death," a user said. Another said, "Wow", after watching the video.

Islanders score three goals in third period to beat Wild - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:57 PM PST The Wild was in charge, leading by a goal after the first period and again following the second, but coach Bruce Boudreau wasn't comfortable — telling his players on the bench, "We are going to need more than this to win." His intuition was accurate. Despite containing a desperate Islanders team that had faltered of late, the Wild allowed a two-goal spurt in 1 minute, 37 seconds to New York in a 3-1 loss Sunday in front of 17,506. It was only the Wild's the third regulation loss at Xcel Energy Center this season at the start of a four-game homestand. "It's hard to shut out teams and win 1-0," Boudreau said. The Islanders' blitz began only 4:24 into the third period when Ryan Pulock's heave at the net clipped winger Mats Zuccarello's stick, disappeared into goaltender Devan Dubnyk's equipment and then trickled through the goalie and over the goal line — a sequence that Dubnyk, who made 25 stops, protested. "I just thought the puck was in me for long enough that a whistle could have been blown," he said. By 6:01, New York had moved ahead after Matt Martin buried a backhand pass from linemate Leo Komarov. With 2:31 to go, the Islanders added Tom Kuhnhackl's first goal of the season — a shot off the post that tumbled into the net. "When you have a lead going into the third period in this league, you're supposed to win," Boudreau said. Before the Islanders rallied, the Wild had ample opportunities to grow its advantage — which emerged 15:43 into the first period when winger Ryan Donato shoveled in a loose puck in the crease. His five goals since Dec. 7 are the second most on the team in that span. With assists on the play, defenseman Ryan Suter maintained a point-per-game pace over his past nine and center Joel Eriksson Ek stretched his point streak to three games, matching the longest of his career. "Always go to the front of the net," Donato said. "That's where goals are scored." But the Wild couldn't capitalize again, sending two deflections off the post and putting up a tepid push in the second that resulted in just five shots on goalie Semyon Varlamov — who ended up with 25 saves. "We had chances to make it two," center Eric Staal said. "If you could make it two, it's real difficult for them to come back into it. But we missed a couple real, real good chances, and then it was just a couple breaks against us and then you're down and it's pretty gritty to try to get it tied up. We just didn't have enough or a bounce here or there to get it." That included three blown power plays, which yielded just one shot. New York also went without a goal in two looks. Overall, the Wild has just three goals in its past 34 power plays. "We had some really good looks, zone time, but we're not getting any results," Boudreau said. "That's concerning, but we're getting good looks and we're trying to stay upbeat and positive about it." This return home, after already logging 24 road games, has been hyped as a launching pad for the Wild considering it has mostly been dominant in St. Paul (10-3-3). And although the team debuted with a dud, it has plenty of time to recover to still make this stretch meaningful. "We know what kind of team we can be at home," Donato said. "Hopefully we can move forward after this one." 今夏に発表されたC.I.A. 撮影=櫻井隆幸 最後はC.I.A. C.I.A. 撮影=櫻井隆幸 C.I.A. C.I.A. presents『NEW YEAR EVENT 2020』 2020年1月13日(月・祝) 会場:品川インターシティホール 料金:¥4,500(全席指定、税込) ※お土産付き、ハイタッチ参加付き、フォトタイムあり。

Wright and Keown rate Mikel Arteta's start at Arsenal after Chelsea defeat - Metro.co.uk Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:24 PM PST Ian Wright and Martin Keown have both been impressed by Mikel Arteta's start to life as Arsenal manager, despite the Spaniard failing to notch his first win. The Gunners were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea on Sunday, while they could only muster a draw in his first game in charge against Bournemouth. However, while results haven't gone Arsenal's way, club legend Wright has noted the marked improvement in Arsenal's play, while former centre-back Keown has been impressed with the way Arteta has been setting his troops out. 'When you look at the two games there's definite improvement in Arsenal,' said Wright on Match of the Day. 'You just think what they could have done had they gone with the appointment after the Leicester game at the international break. Advertisement Advertisement 'It's one and two touch all the way and its really quick. Fantastic zip, the fans should be happy with what they're seeing at the moment but give Chelsea credit for what they've done today.' 'Very compact. Very solid. I like the shape,' Keown added. 'They've had three different managers by the way. Different ideas, different voices. 'It's the front players, when they go to engage I think they do that really well. Everyone is engaging really very well. 'Chelsea with their system 3 at the back seem confused and Arsenal were really well organised hunting in packs. Everyone attuned to the system. I thought they did it really well.' Frank Lampard praises Mikel Arteta after Arsenal's defeat to Chelsea - Metro.co.uk Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:24 PM PST Frank Lampard praised Mikel Arteta for Arsenal's gameplan following Chelsea's 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The Gunners were excellent in the opening 45 minutes and were ahead by half time through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's goal in the 13th minute. But Chelsea drastically improved in the second half and two late goals from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham handed the win for Lampard's side. Lampard, however, has credited Arteta for setting up Arsenal in a way which pinned back Chelsea's three-man defence in the first half. 'When we played as we did at Tottenham last week, I probably would have questioned my sanity if I had come to Arsenal and we played four at the back and it had gone that way in the first half-hour,' said Lampard. 'For me the main thing in the first half-hour was not the tactics, it was the spirit and the fight. Arsenal were quicker, we were lethargic, they were brave, we were nervous. Advertisement Advertisement 'You say I was decisive but I could have made the change after 10 minutes, and not just Emerson coming off, any of the players could to change it slightly. 'It is hard to convey a message with your voice on the sidelines with this sort of atmosphere so sometimes it has to be a gesture. 'We changed and it got better. 'Mikel Arteta is not silly. He saw us play at Tottenham and found a way to pin our five back. 'We had three men marking one at the back and they had numbers in midfield and they won all the second balls, and that had to change.' Lampard praised the response from his Chelsea players showed after his 'firm' half-time team talk. 'You don't want 11 quiet players who go let's get on with it and just trot out the game,' said the Chelsea manager. 'I said my piece, it was pretty firm, you can't come here and have nothing about you. 'Win, lose or draw, I was not so bothered in terms of how I saw the second half coming. It was a case of can we show something here lads, because we have to. Advertisement Advertisement 'We are Chelsea and we can't roll up and not feel like the 3,000 fans who have travelled across London to watch the game. 'And then the lads started talking and it was a bit aggressive, which is a good thing. 'The response in the second half was everything I wanted. We have been rightly questioned recently. 'Everton away would be a good one, a team that had life breathed into them by a new manager and we didn't react and it was quiet after that game in the dressing room and I did not like that, and some of our home games recently were lacking something.' Apple May Remove Coinbase’s Mobile DApp Browser from App Store - Cointelegraph Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:35 PM PST After Google removed Ethereum-based decentralized application (DApp) browser MetaMask from its Android application store, Apple may now force Coinbase to remove the DApp browser feature from its crypto wallet application. According to a Reddit post published on Dec. 28, United States-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase warned its users that in order to comply with Apple's mobile App Store policy, it might be forced to remove the DApp browser feature from its wallet application. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong commented on the post:
Armstrong also said that users interested in using DApps on Apple's mobile devices might need to ask Apple to allow such applications. He continued:
Coordinated action against cryptoAs mentioned above, the news comes shortly after Google banned Ethereum wallet and DApp browser MetaMask from its Android application distribution platform Google Play. The project's team noted that the reason provided for the app removal is the policy against mobile mining, which the software in question purportedly did not allow for. MetaMask's appeal to the decision has also been rejected. The firm noted in a tweet at the time:
Cryptocurrency Influencer Omar Bham suggested that the moves are supposed to protect the firms' businesses against potential decentralized competitors. He said in a tweet sent on Dec. 28:
On Dec. 23, cryptocurrency influencers started claiming that Google's user video streaming platform YouTube started censoring their content. After major personalities in the space started speaking up, the platform reinstated some of the content, but many of the YouTubers affected noted that their videos were not restored. Two days later, YouTube restored more of the content and the firm's team said in a tweet that the initial issue happened due to an error in the review process. A crypto influencer confirmed that warnings set on his YouTube account and most of the other's censored influencers have been removed. As Cointelegraph reported, many of the content creators turned to decentralized content sharing platforms after the incident. "He just follows through ridiculously, I'm not sure he makes contact but what is he doing? "It's a ridiculous thing to do, he's played so well, the team have played so well, then you see that. "You think about what [Heung-min] Son got sent off for in the game against Chelsea last week then you see that. 'That's just ridiculous, look at Kante, he looks towards the referee and says, 'you gonna allow that?'." Luiz, one of the heroes of Munich in 2012 and a two-time Premier League winner, is experienced enough to know what trouble this would get himself into. But there was no card for this challenge just before half time from Craig Pawson. As if Luiz somehow knew he had been lucky to get away with it, his name was taken down just after half time for a different offence. In memoriam: All the best tech that died in the 2010s - Digital Trends Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:54 AM PST Technology is always evolving and advancing, at least in theory, and that means old tech is often bumped out of the way to make room for new. Sometimes perfectly good gadgets or services that still work as intended are taken out back, unceremoniously shot, and buried in a shallow grave. Sometimes you can accept that a particular piece of tech's time has come, but that doesn't make putting it to sleep or saying goodbye any easier. We could easily fill a graveyard with all the tech that was killed off in the last decade, with enough terminally ill products and services left over to fill a hospital. Here are the tech stars that shone the brightest before they were snuffed out forever — may they live on in our hearts. MP3 Players — iPod and ZuneWhen the MP3 file format collided with Apple's iPod it transformed the way we listen to music. People used to own portable cassette or CD players that weren't really all that portable, and if you wanted to listen to specific albums or mix tapes you had to carry them around with you. The iPod helped Apple get onto the path to world domination, along with its iTunes software. Suddenly, it was easy for people to create playlists and carry hundreds, and eventually thousands, of tracks around in their pockets. It also became much easier than ever before to share and download music. Microsoft tried to get in on the act a few years after Apple with the Zune, an infamous flop that was declared dead back in 2009. The iPod dominated, so it was somewhat ironic that Apple's next big hit, the iPhone, would be the one to start hammering nails in the MP3 player's coffin. With the growth of streaming services led by Spotify and the ubiquity of smartphones which serve as music players, there's really not much call for MP3 players anymore. The MP3 format itself was declared dead in 2017 when the Fraunhofer Institute that originally created it terminated its licensing program. Instant Messengers — AOL, MSN, BBM, Yahoo! If you were a teen in the late 90's or early 00's then you probably spent hours chatting to friends on MSN Messenger, AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), or maybe Yahoo! Messenger. Text chat was a relatively new thing back then and it had never been so easy to have conversations online. A little later BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) brought instant messaging, voice, and even video calls to mobile, allowing for group chats, location sharing, and other features that would soon be widely copied. These early messaging pioneers were gradually replaced by newer and better services. Microsoft bought Skype in 2012 signalling the end of MSN, Verizon acquired AOL in 2015 and finally disconnected AIM in 2017, and Yahoo! Messenger was shut down in 2018. BBM declined with the popularity of BlackBerry phones, though it was belatedly released for Android and iOS in 2013. It still exists as an enterprise app, but the consumer BBM was shuttered in May. DVDs — Rentals, Blockbuster, and PlayersWe used to proudly display our shiny disc collections of films and TV shows, but it's becoming rare to see DVDs in modern living rooms. It wasn't that long ago that people would drop in at the local Blockbuster and spend a few minutes reading the DVD covers before choosing the night's entertainment. The service moved onto rentals by mail, enabling you to get new movies and return them by post. But what really swept away all those Blockbuster stores, and DVDs in general, was the advent of streaming services. Blockbuster famously turned down the chance to buy Netflix for $50 million in 2000. The DVD rental giant would go on to file for bankruptcy in 2010 with the last store closing in 2014. Blu-Ray and UHD discs have failed to catch on in the way that DVDs did. If you have a fast enough internet connection, there's very little reason to buy physical discs anymore and sales of all formats have dropped more than 50% in the last five years, according to the Motion Picture Association. With DVD sales dwindling, DVD players are also disappearing. All the current game consoles can play DVDs anyway, so the need for a purpose built box for DVDs under the TV has dissolved. Steam Controller, Link, and MachinesWhen Valve leveraged its amazing success as the developer of Half-Life to take on the traditional game publishing industry with Steam it was something of a surprise and victory was far from assured. But digital distribution took off in a big way and developers flocked to Steam because it offered far higher potential profits and lowered the barriers to entry. Perhaps giddy with the success of Steam, Valve planned to conquer consoles next. It would bring your Steam library to the living room, bridging the gap between PC and console. As it turned out less than 500,000 Steam Machines were sold in the first six months and it proved difficult to keep hardware manufacturers like Alienware and Zotac interested. But Valve had another great idea — what if you could stream games from your PC to the living room TV? That's exactly what Steam Link offered. To complete the line-up there was the fully customizable Steam Controller. While some people appreciated the capabilities of Valve's thoughtfully designed hardware, it met with a mixed reception and failed to put much of a dent in a console market dominated by Sony and Microsoft. Valve cut prices and bundled the hardware, but it never took off and when the last few Steam Controllers sold for $5 apiece earlier this year Valve stopped making them. Plasma TVsWhen flat screen TVs rocked up to displace the big, boxy, cathode-ray tube (CRT) televisions most people had in their living rooms we welcomed them. Screens got bigger, pictures got better, and they took up less space and used less power at the same time. The battle for your flat screen affections divided into two camps: Plasma or LCD/LED. If you wanted the best picture possible, you went with a Plasma TV — they offered deeper blacks, better viewing angles, faster processing, and better contrast and colors. While LCD or LED TVs had higher brightness and used less power, only the very best LED TVs could come close to competing with Plasma TVs on picture quality. So why did plasma TV production end in 2014? Mostly because mass production cut the cost of LED televisions and leading plasma TV manufacturer Panasonic failed to press its advantage. Like Betamax before it, Plasma was beaten by an inferior technology. It's only really with the rise of OLED that we've seen Plasma's picture quality bested. Net NeutralityThe idea behind Net Neutrality is that everything on the internet should be treated equally. That means you should get the same speed from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) regardless of the site you're trying to access. It's still not entirely clear what the death of Net Neutrality means, but it was declared dead in June 2018. The FCC rolled back protections that were in place to prevent companies charging different content providers different rates for different content or reducing speeds for internet users accessing specific sites or services, paving the way for carriers and ISPs to throttle competitors or boost speeds for partnered services. Most major ISPs were quick to suggest they would uphold the principles of an open internet, but this is entirely at their discretion. What they are definitely doing so far is throttling torrents and file sharing when they determine that downloads are illegal. Microsoft KinectLaunched in 2010 and bundled with the Xbox One, Microsoft's Kinect was a clever, advanced, infrared camera system with sensors and a microphone that could automatically recognize you, track your body, and respond to voice commands. It was launched with a few silly, family-friendly games that required you to clear a space in the center of your living room and then jump around waving your arms. The Kinect games were a clear attempt to compete with Nintendo's all-conquering Wii and suck in a more casual gaming audience, but it didn't work. The games were disappointing, it suffered from fairly frequent glitches, and it required a clear space in front of it with players between six and ten feet away to work properly. The hardware still felt ahead of its time, but Microsoft was unable to come up with a killer title. When it started selling Xbox consoles without the Kinect in 2014 it was clear that Microsoft was throwing in the towel and the Kinect was officially discontinued in 2017. Google PlusInfamous for spinning up different services and sometimes new products, then killing them off, the Google graveyard is huge and growing. Google Reader, Google Buzz, Google Glass, Project ARA, Nexus Player, Bump!, Chromecast Audio, Inbox by Gmail, Project Tango, Google Now, Allo, Picasa, Google Wave, Google Goggles, Google Daydream, the list just goes on and on. Arguably its biggest death of the last decade was Google Plus, its attempt to build a social network that would rival Facebook. Launched in 2011, Google Plus wasn't its first foray into social networking, but it did seem to represent Google's biggest push into this space. There were circles you could group different people into, photo and video sharing, polls, a +1 button, Pages for businesses, Communities for topics, and more. It seemed successful and important at first and user numbers soared, but it turned out that user engagement was low and those numbers were inflated because people often signed up to get access to a different Google service and actually had no interest in using Google Plus. Redesigns and splitting off core functions into separate apps did little to help and Google shut it down earlier this year. Windows PhoneAt the beginning of the decade, Microsoft was feeling the pressure. Apple's iPhone was taking the world by storm, Android was attracting more manufacturers, and Windows Mobile was fading. Microsoft was struggling to hang on to a share of the soaring smartphone market and so it was time for something new. Enter Windows Phone 7 with a brave and bold new look that featured customizable Live Tiles and the integration of different services into hubs. Everyone loved the style and it had a big influence on user interface design, but Windows Phone never caught up with its big competitors in terms of app quantity or quality. When Microsoft launched Windows Phone 8 it managed to grow its market share, but angered many loyal customers left with Windows Phone 7 devices that couldn't upgrade to the new OS. By 2014 sales were dwindling and big name manufacturers were increasingly focusing on Android. Windows Phone had peaked in 2013 with a 3.4% share of the market. Nokia was the one of the few companies still making Windows Phone devices with some measure of success, then Microsoft bought the Finnish firm's mobile manufacturing wing and started making its own devices — it didn't work. Microsoft tried to reboot again with Windows 10 Mobile in 2015, but it was effectively dead by 2017 when it received its last feature update and users were advised to switch to an Android or iOS device this year. VineThe internet has changed the way we spread and consume information and it has led to the birth of all sorts of creative alternatives to the printed word, radio, or television. Vine brought us videos with audio in six second loops, like an evolution of the GIF, and when people started using it in all sorts of interesting new ways it catapulted to the forefront of the growing social video app space. Just as Twitter — which would go on to acquire Vine — imposed a unique challenge with its character limit, Vine challenged people to create loops worth sharing and people rose to that challenge. It rapidly built a huge audience, generated countless memes, and boosted several careers. While it was laudable that the founders resisted monetization it didn't bode well for Vine's long term survival. Twitter failed to integrate its acquisition and then failed to find a buyer for it; meanwhile many of its stars jumped ship when Instagram launched video and Vine's fate was sealed. Twitter shut it down in 2016. Honorable mentions and the terminally illThere are many candidates that didn't make our list. Early sites to help you navigate the internet and find the good stuff, like StumbleUpon and Digg are dead. Small smartphones like the iPhone SE or the Sony Compact are history. We can pour one out for USB-A, CD players in cars, Mini USB, Hotmail, Ouya, PlayStation Vue, and Tumblr. While owning your software, camcorders, iTunes, landline phones, headphone jacks, SatNavs, and digital compact cameras are all on life support. We'd ask you to leave your own suggestions, but the early promise of an intelligent conversation between reader and author was crushed when the ability to leave opinions, or just plain insults, anonymously precipitated a flood of trolling and led many publications, including this one, to scrap online commenting altogether. Five stabbed at Hanukkah celebration near New York City - Al Jazeera English Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:24 AM PST A man attacked a Hanukkah celebration at a rabbi's home north of New York City, stabbing and wounding five people before fleeing in a vehicle, police have said. Police said the stabbings happened at about 10pm local time on Saturday (03:00 GMT on Sunday) in Monsey, one of several Hudson Valley towns that have seen an influx in large numbers of Hasidic Jews in recent years. More:Saturday was the seventh night of Hanukkah. The Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council for the Hudson Valley region tweeted reports that the stabbings took place at the house of a Hasidic rabbi during Hanukkah celebrations. Several state and local officials have described the location of the stabbing as a synagogue. The rabbi's home is next door to a synagogue. Weidel said the five people were taken to hospitals for treatment. Photos and videos posted on Twitter showed large emergency response with paramedics running and pushing stretchers. A number of police and emergency vehicles could be seen in the images. Ramapo Police Chief Brad Weidel said hours later that New York City police had located a vehicle and possible suspect being sought in connection with the stabbing. New York City Police would not immediately confirm whether anyone was in custody. Previous incidents The Saturday night attack appeared to be the latest in a string targeting Jews in the United States, including an attack at a kosher grocery store in New Jersey earlier this month. Six people died in the shooting, including the two killers, a police officer and three people who had been inside the store. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the attack was driven by hatred of Jews and law enforcement. A month ago, a man required surgery after he was stabbed while walking to a Monsey synagogue. Around New York City, police have gotten at least six reports this week - and eight since December 13 - of attacks possibly propelled by anti-Jewish bias. Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Friday that police presence would increase in Brooklyn neighbourhoods with large Jewish populations. Israeli leaders 'shocked and devastated,' demand action after Monsey attack - The Times of Israel Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:54 AM PST Israeli leaders condemned a stabbing spree at a Hanukkah celebration in upstate New York, on Sunday, with some calling for US Jews to immigrate to Israel after a spate of attacks on Jews in and around New York City. President Reuven Rivlin said on Twitter that he was "shocked and devastated by the terrible terror attack in New York." "The resurgent anti-Semitism is not only a problem for the Jewish people, and certainly not for Israel alone. We must work together to confront this evil, which is again and again raising its head and represents a real danger to the entire world," he wrote. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also denounced the rampage. "Israel strongly condemns the latest expressions of anti-Semitism and the cruel attack in the middle of Hanukkah at the home of the rabbi in Monsey," Netanyahu said at the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday. "We send wishes for recovery to those injured. We will cooperate in any way with local authorities to help wipe out this phenomenon. We offer this help to all countries." At least five people from the local ultra-Orthodox community were wounded in the stabbing at a Hanukkah lighting ceremony in the New York suburb of Monsey, authorities said late Saturday. A man reportedly used a machete to attack people attending at a residence in the upstate New York town, which is home to a large Jewish population. Two of the victims were in critical condition. No motive was given for the attack by police, but it was widely viewed by officials as anti-Semitic in nature. Blue and White leader Benny Gantz sent his wishes for a speedy recovery to the victims and warned of a "growing number of attacks on Jews around the world." "This shocking incident during a Hanukkah celebration is another example of a global problem that faces us today. I have no doubt that the American authorities will show zero tolerance toward the stabbed, and will do everything they must to put an end to this phenomenon." Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman, an immigrant to Israel from Moldova, suggested the solution to anti-Semitism was immigration to Israel. In a Hebrew-language tweet, he wrote: "Again and again, we are witnesses to the dire consequences of anti-Semitism, this time in Monsey, New York. Alongside the deep sadness and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured, it's important to know that the main solution to these trends is immigration to Israel." Israeli officials have urged immigration after attacks in Europe, but calls for American Jews to emigrate are rare. Foreign Minister Israel Katz said the attack should teach Israelis to be more careful about how they speak about the ultra-Orthodox community, which is often maligned in mainstream Israeli discourse. Liberman in particular has been accused of anti-Semitism for accusing Haredi politicians of only seeking government handouts. "This hate crime teaches us to avoid hurtful statements toward the Israeli Haredi community in Israeli discourse," Katz said in a Sunday morning interview on Israel Radio. He later repeated the comments in a tweet.
Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman, the leader of the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party, also expressed dismay over the attack. "It is shocking to see time and again innocent people being harmed and persecuted simply for being Jewish," said Litzman. "This is a terrible situation and US leaders and authorities, as in the entire world, must put an end to it and uproot this affliction." Blue and White's MK Yair Lapid, who has also been critical of ultra-Orthodox politicians in Israel, vowed such attacks "won't destroy our spirit." "Anti-Semitism won't defeat us, won't destroy our spirit," he wrote in a Hebrew-language Twitter post. "The community in Monsey today, too, will light the last candle of Hanukkah and pray for good news." Israel's envoy to the UN, Danny Danon, called for "actions, not words" from American officials. "On a day when we celebrate the Hanukkah holiday, we see yet another vile attack on Jews. This is a time for action, not words. This is a time for enforcement that deters the perpetrators of hate, whoever they may be." Anti-Semitism, Danon added, "has no border. It raises its head in the United States, in Europe and around the world. The world's nations must unite in a struggle against the wave of hate." The biggest tech flops of the decade - Stuff.co.nz Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:54 AM PST OPINION: The past decade has seen huge advancements in the world of technology. Apple has led the way with smartphones since it launched arguably the most important product of the decade way back when it debuted the iPhone 4. Since then we've seen the rise of the smart home, and streaming services like Netflix and Spotify exploding, and with 5G landing just in the nick of time, some of us can now enjoy 500 megabits per second mobile download speeds. It's been an incredible decade. It's not all been one big success story though — the past ten years have also seen some epic flops too. Here are my personal favourites. Windows 8 Hindsight is a beautiful thing. And Windows 8 definitely wasn't. Looking back, it's hard to understand why Microsoft felt it needed to make such a drastic change to its already-successful desktop operating system like it did when it launched Windows 8 in 2012. In one fell swoop, then-CEO Steve Ballmer launched a Windows operating system that was totally different from anything people had seen before. The reaction, predictably, was one of confusion. READ MORE: Customers were buying new Windows laptops, and didn't know how to use them. Most famously, Microsoft ditched its start button, replacing it with colourful tiles and gestures. The move was so unpopular Microsoft brought back the button a year later with 8.1. It finally settled on the Windows 7 and Windows 8 mashup that is Windows 10. BlackBerry This one feels a bit harsh. BlackBerry sold a lot of phones between 2010 and 2020. However, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer's fall from grace has been spectacular. In 2011, BlackBerry was the world's biggest phone company. In fact, in 2011 the company shipped a massive 50 million devices. To put that into context, it took Apple four years and three iPhone launches, to break 50 million smartphone sales. However, BlackBerry's market share has dropped from a healthy 20 per cent in 2009, to 0.1 per cent in 2019. And that's a flop in anyone's book. Google Glass This was hilarious. My old boss spent £1,000 (roughly NZ$2,000) on a pair when they first came out in 2014. It was a massive waste of money for a product that made him look ridiculous when he wore it to the post-work drinks. While also not doing anything useful other than map out constellations for him in the night sky. Google+ Sticking with Google, its attempt at launching a social network in 2011 was also laughable. Google+ was sort of forced upon Google users and didn't really offer anything in return. It was a bad Facebook with, and this is hard to believe, a worse privacy structure. Amazingly, Google+ was only closed earlier this year. Windows Phone Remember Windows Phone? No. Probably not. Nobody owned a Windows Phone. And that was the problem. Despite the huge unpopularity of the mobile operating system and the tiny market share, Microsoft still decided to chase mobile with its $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's phone business in 2014. Like Windows 8. Windows Phone was a horrible world of colourful tiles, gestures and no apps. The hardware that supported it, mainly Nokia (hence the acquisition), was middling at best too. Samsung Galaxy Fold Hubris is a condition all technology companies suffer from. But Samsung took the gold medal this year when it crowed about the ground-breaking technology inside the Galaxy Fold - only for the device to break within days of being sent out to high-profile reviewers. The Huawei ban The biggest flop of the decade has to be Huawei's ongoing saga with the US. Here we have a series of technologies Huawei has spent years, and billions of dollars, developing. All ruined (in the Western world) by President Donald Trump in less than a day. The problem? Trump and his security experts say the company's ties to the Chinese government are dangerous for the US and its allies. So the president placed Huawei on an "Entity List" that bans all US companies from working with the Chinese technology giant. 3D printing (for consumers) Weren't we all supposed to have a 3D printer in our homes by now? There are several reasons why we don't. It's a lot of work. To create an object, you either have to download an existing template or design your own. Which is impossible if you're not a 3D designer. And it can take a full week to print a pretty minor object. After all that, there's still no guarantee the end-product will be perfect. The printers produce a lot of fumes, making it impractical to simply leave running in the background at home when you need a new coathanger or Monopoly piece. And it costs thousands of dollars. 5 people were stabbed at a Hanukkah celebration in a New York suburb - CNN Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:54 AM PST The Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council for the Hudson Valley Region said in a tweet that victims inside the Monsey residence were Hasidic Jews. Two people are in critical condition, co-founder of the council, Yossi Gestetner, told CNN. The attacker pulled out a knife that was "almost like a broomstick," said Aron Kohn, who attended the Hanukkah celebration. Kohn said there were at least 100 people in the home at that time, as the rabbi was "lighting the candle" on the seventh night of Hanukkah. Kohn added that the suspect tried to run into a nearby synagogue, but someone closed the doors. Rockland County -- where the stabbing took place -- has the largest Jewish population per capita of any US county, according to New York state. More than 30% of its residents are Jewish. Officials are still working an active crime scene, Ramapo Police Chief Brad Weidel said in a news conference. He said a suspect, described as a tall black man, was apprehended by police. A latest in a string of attacksNew York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the stabbing was "the latest in a string of attacks against members of the Jewish community in New York this week." "Let me be clear: anti-Semitism and bigotry of any kind are repugnant to our values of inclusion and diversity and we have absolutely zero tolerance for such acts of hate," the governor said in a statement. He directed the state's Hate Crime Task Force to investigate the incident. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of New York also said they were heading to the scene to learn more and coordinate with law enforcement. And last week, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city's police department would be boosting its number of patrols after at least eight possible anti-Semitic incidents in a week. Police will increase visits to houses of worship and 'other critical areas in the community," he said. In a statement to CNN, Israel's President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin expressed being "shocked and outraged" by the stabbing. "We are praying for the rapid recovery of those injured. The rise of anti-Semitism is not just a Jewish problem, and certainly not just the State of Israel's problem. We must work together to confront this evil, which is raising its head again and is a genuine threat around the world," the statement said. In response to the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would work with local authorities to deal with incidents of anti-Semitism. "Israel condemns in every sense the latest anti-Semitic incidents and the brutal attack in the middle of Hanukkah at the rabbi's house in Monsey, New York. We send wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured," he said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting. "We will work together in every way with the local authorities in order to help eliminate this phenomena. We offer our help to all countries." 'We cannot overstate the fear people are feeling'As authorities began investigating the scene of the stabbings, officials began sharing messages of solidarity and resilience. New York Attorney General Letitia James said there was "zero tolerance for acts of hate of any kind and we will continue to monitor this horrific situation." "I stand with the Jewish community tonight and every night," James said in a tweet. After Saturday's stabbing, de Blasio said "many Jewish families in our city have close ties to Monsey. We cannot overstate the fear people are feeling right now." "We will NOT allow this to become the new normal," de Blasio tweeted. "We'll use every tool we have to stop these attacks once and for all. The NYPD has deployed a visible and growing presence around Jewish houses of worship on the streets in communities like Williamsburg, Crown Heights and Boro Park." The ADL's CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said it was "heart-wrenching to see the holiday of Hanukkah violated yet again" following last week's "hateful assaults." "We are outraged because the answer is clear: the Jewish community NEEDS greater protection," Greenblatt tweeted. "Whether worshiping in synagogue, shopping in the supermarket or celebrating at home, Jews should be safe from violence. We need authorities to provide increased protection NOW and ensure that the full force of the law is brought down on those who perpetrate such horrific crimes," Greenblatt said.
