Thunberg in Twitter spat with German rail - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 12:07 AM PST

Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg was forced to defend herself in a Twitter spat with German railway service Deutsche Bahn (DB) on Sunday.

Thunberg, 16, provoked a testy reaction from Germany's oft-maligned rail operator when she tweeted from a DB train on her journey home from the COP25 climate summit in Madrid.

"Traveling on overcrowded trains through Germany. And I'm finally on my way home!" wrote Thunberg above a picture of herself sitting on the floor of a carriage surrounded by suitcases.

DB responded testily, pointing out that Thunberg had travelled in first class during her journey through Germany.

"Dear Greta, thanks for supporting us railway workers in our fight against climate change. We are happy that you travelled with us on the ICE 174 on Saturday," tweeted DB's official account in German.

"It would have been nicer if you had also mentioned the friendly and competent manner in which you were treated by staff at your seat in first class," they added.

The company then followed up the tweets with a press release, in which they added that Greta's travel companions "were sitting in first class from Frankfurt onwards".

Thunberg hit back on Twitter, claiming she had found a seat at a stop after Frankfurt, which she said was "no problem".

'No problem'

"Our train from Basel was taken out of traffic. So we sat on the floor of two different trains. After Goettingen I got a seat," wrote the 16-year-old.

"This is no problem of course and I never said it was. Overcrowded trains is a great sign because it means the demand for train travel is high!"

Thunberg's journey through Germany was the last leg of a continent-spanning trip which began when she travelled to New York on a low-emissions yacht last August.

Th 16-year-old activist started a worldwide movement last year when she began to strike from school every Friday to protest government inaction on climate change.

Refusing to fly, she has twice crossed the Atlantic by boat in recent months in order to speak at a UN climate summit in New York and the hastily rearranged COP25 summit in Madrid.

Her online run-in with Deutsche Bahn comes just days after a high-profile Twitter clash with US president Donald Trump.

After Thunberg was named TIME magazine's person of the year, Trump tweeted that she had "anger management problems" and told her to "chill".

Thunberg responded by changing her Twitter bio to include the words "currently chilling".

How TikTok went from a fun viral app to caught in the crosshairs of the US government - CNBC

TikTok is now one of the most popular mobile apps in the world. But success has brought greater scrutiny from the U.S. government for the Chinese-owned app.

So how did it grow and why is Washington taking a keen interest?

The rise of TikTok

TikTok is operated by Chinese technology giant ByteDance. It is the international version of ByteDance's local app Douyin.

In 2017, ByteDance bought a rival app called Musica.ly and eventually merged it with TikTok.

The app allows users to post 15-second videos with music overlaid. People often post videos of them lip syncing to a song or other activities.

It went viral, especially among "Gen Z" or those between the ages of 16 and 25. Paul Barnes, a managing director at App Annie, said TikTok has captured the mind of this age group.

"I think it's just tapped into something that resonates with that particular demographic," Barnes told CNBC's "Beyond The Valley" Podcast.

"The majority of these users ... their first phone was a smartphone. And I think the Chinese publishers probably had better experience of that, maybe even (than) some of the Western publishers, so that probably gave them an advantage in really understanding that mobile-first consumer … particularly that younger demographic."

So how big is it?

TikTok is currently the third most-downloaded non-game app of the year, behind WhatsApp and Messenger, app analytics firm Sensor Tower said. It sits above Facebook and Instagram.

App Annie's Barnes estimates TikTok has around 625 million monthly active users globally. Facebook in comparison has 2.45 billion MAUs. However, Barnes said that while it may not be the biggest social media app out there, it's gaining quickly.

"That growth, that 625 million users, the growth of that is 85% (year-on-year) so it's big, it's not the biggest … but it's growing at an incredible rate," Barnes said.

In comparison, in the third quarter, Facebook's MAU number grew 8% year-on-year.

Why is the US government worried?

There are a couple of different issues. Firstly, U.S. lawmakers are concerned about the app's links to China. TikTok's parent company is Chinese. And lawmakers are worried that TikTok censors content on its platform.

The issue was raised following a high profile case in which a 17-year-old user in New Jersey, Feroza Aziz, was locked out of her account after she posted a viral video criticizing the Chinese government's treatment of the Uighur ethnic minority. The Chinese government has detained Uighurs and other primarily Muslim minorities in camps, which Beijing claims are re-education centers and part of its efforts to counter terrorism and extremism.

TikTok however said that Aziz's account was banned for a different video which violated its policies. It also said that the viral video about the treatment of Uighur Muslims was removed due to a "human moderation error."

The company has repeatedly asserted that it does not censor content. In China, online platforms regularly censor material deemed sensitive by Beijing. U.S. politicians are concerned that TikTok could do the same for content outside of China.

Alex Zhu, the head of TikTok, was scheduled to meet with US politicians, but postponed the meeting.

The second issue for Washington is around user data and whether TikTok is sending that back to China.

Washington has launched a national security review into TikTok's acquisition of Musica.ly.

The inquiry stems in part from the dangers the committee perceives from the Chinese government's access to the app's data and user profiles, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC earlier this month.

At the time, a TikTok spokesperson said the company "cannot comment on ongoing regulatory processes" but that it "has made clear that we have no higher priority than earning the trust of users and regulators in the U.S. Part of that effort includes working with Congress."

Story behind viral photo of dog saluting top Army commander will make you go aww - India Today

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 12:02 AM PST

A picture in which a dog is saluting the 15 Corps Commander Lt Gen KJS Dhillon has gone viral on social media.

In the photo, the Chinar Corps Commander can be seen returning the salute to the dog. Speaking to ANI, Army officials said that the moment was captured on July 01, the first day of the Amarnath Yatra earlier this year.

"While the Corps Commander was going to the holy cave for darshan, around 50 metres before it, Menaka was carrying out his duties. As the Corps Commander reached there, the dog saluted him," they said.

As per the traditions of the Indian Army, all seniors are supposed to reciprocate the salute and that is why Lt Gen Dhillon also returned the salute.

Retweeting the picture posted on Twitter by a handle @nee_el on the Remount Veterinary Corps Day (RVC), Lt Gen Dhillon tweeted: "Salute to the Buddy who saved many a lives many a times."

During operations in the Army, the dogs move along with the troops and help them detect terrorists and explosives.

A large number of these canines have been awarded gallantry medals for their role in counter-terrorism operations. The Army's RVC maintains the dogs, mules and horses of the force which help them in operating in difficult terrains and locations.

Anak Krakatau: Giant blocks of rock litter ocean floor - BBC News

Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:37 PM PST

Shattered remnants from the volcano that generated a devastating tsunami in Indonesia a year ago have been pictured on the seafloor for the first time.

Scientists used sonar equipment to image the giant chunks of rock that slid into the ocean when one side of Anak Krakatau collapsed.

Some of these blocks are 70-90m high.

Their plunge into the water produced tall waves that tore across the shorelines of Java and Sumatra on 22 December 2018.

Over 400 people around the Sunda Strait died in the nighttime disaster, and thousands more were injured and/or displaced.

Media playback is unsupported on your device

Researchers have been trying to reconstruct what happened ever since. But all their studies to date have been based on what can be seen above the water.

Prof Dave Tappin and colleagues realised they had to investigate the island volcano's missing mass - now under the ocean's surface - or they would never truly get a full description of Anak Krakatau's failure.

A multibeam echosounder was brought in to map the seabed.

Media playback is unsupported on your device

"Early models of the collapse were based on satellite imagery that only looked at the subaerial parts of the volcano," the British Geological Survey scientist told BBC News.

"Our bathymetry is imaging at 200m water depths and we are seeing triangular-shaped blocks, which are basically coherent and they formed, before the collapse, the southwestern flank of Anak Krakatau."

The debris field runs out to 2,000m from the volcano. A seismic survey also conducted by the team shows how this material is layered on top of older deposits.

Crucially, the underwater imaging has allowed Prof Tappin's team to revise its estimate for the volume of rock involved in the flank failure. And it's smaller than previously thought.

Calculations based on above-water measurements of what was left of the once 335m-high volcano had suggested a figure of 0.27 cubic km.

The new assessment now points to 0.19 cubic km sliding into the ocean, almost 200 million cubic metres.

Media playback is unsupported on your device

This smaller volume might have presented something of a problem for tsunami modellers.

Their original simulations of how the waves generated in the collapse moved across the Sunda Strait had already proved a good match for what had been observed at tide gauges and from what was known of the extent of damage along nearby coasts.

Now, the models are having to be re-run but with a smaller input.

The simulations still work, however - and with good reason. Prof Tappin's team has also discovered that the failure plane on the volcano - the angle of slope along which the rock mass slid - was shallower than earlier assumptions.

Whereas it was once thought the failure plane cut down steeply into the basin created when the old volcano on the site blew its top in 1883, it's now obvious the collapse slope entered the water much nearer the surface.

Media playback is unsupported on your device

"We've already redone the near-field modelling with a finer resolution based on the new bathymetry and the results are about the same, despite having a smaller volume of rock," explained tsunami expert Prof Stephan Grilli from the University of Rhode Island.

"The shallower slide occurs almost like a ski jump, maintaining the collapse material closer to the surface and making it more tsunamigenic than a steeper failure, which would have brought the sediment down deeper, much quicker."

Profs Tappin and Grilli were speaking here in San Francisco at the American Geophysical Union's annual Fall Meeting. This is the first chance they've had to present their findings to the wider scientific community.

Also speaking was Prof Hermann Fritz from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

He reviewed the damage on nearby shores, describing from on-the-ground studies how high the tsunami waves must have been and how far inland they reached.

On the islands in the immediate vicinity of Anak Krakatau, trees up to 80m above the normal sea surface were torn from their roots.

Much of the wave energy took a path away from the volcano in the same direction of the collapse - to the southwest. This resulted in 10m-high waves laying waste to a corner of Ujung Kulon National Park on Panaitan Island - a distance of 50km from Anak Krakatau.

"Local residents were very fortunate that the collapse was in the southwest direction, in the direction where few people were living - towards the national park," said Prof Fritz.

"Had the collapse direction been different, the outcome could have been very different as well in terms of tsunami heights on populated areas."

Lessons learned from Anak Krakatau are being used to assess the hazards at other volcanoes. There are about 40 other locations around the world where flank collapse into surrounding water is considered a danger.

Greta Thunberg in Twitter spat with German railway service Deutsche Bahn - Daily Mail

Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:07 PM PST

Greta Thunberg gets into Twitter spat with 'overcrowded' German railway service Deutsche Bahn after she tweeted photo of herself sitting on a carriage floor (but doesn't how she was moved to a First Class seat!)

  • Thunberg, 16, tweeted about the 'overcrowded train' on her way back to Sweden
  • Deutsche Bahn tweeted sarcastic 'thank you' for supporting electric transport
  • Thunberg tweeted a swift clarification saying she preferred overcrowded trains
  • She apologised Saturday for saying she would put politicians 'against the wall'

Greta Thunberg engaged the German railway service Deutsche Bahn in Twitter warfare after sharing a photo of herself sitting on the floor of a packed train.

The 16-year-old Swede, who was later upgraded to First Class, wrote on Saturday: 'Traveling on overcrowded trains through Germany. And I'm finally on my way home!'

In a stinging reply, DB said: 'Dear #Greta, thank you for supporting us railroad workers in the fight against climate change! We were pleased that you were on the ICE 74 with us on Saturday. And with 100 percent green electricity.

'It would have been even nicer if you had also reported how friendly and competent you were looked after by our team at your seat in first class.'

As a First Class passenger, Thunberg would have had access to more legroom in plush leather seats, free food and drink, as well as complimentary WiFi and newspapers.

Her online run-in with DB came just hours after she had spoken before a furious climate protest in Turin, Italy, and said that she would 'put leaders against the wall' if they continued running away from their climate obligations.

Greta Thunberg told cheering protesters Friday 'we will make sure we put world leaders against the wall' if they fail to take urgent action on climate change.

Greta Thunberg told cheering protesters Friday 'we will make sure we put world leaders against the wall' if they fail to take urgent action on climate change.

She later apologised for the remark, claiming that a Swedish phrase had been lost in translation.

'Yesterday I said we must hold our leaders accountable and unfortunately said "put them against the wall". That's Swenglish: 'att ställa någon mot väggen' (to put someone against the wall) means to hold someone accountable. That's what happens when you improvise speeches in a second language.' Ms Thunberg wrote.

'But of course I apologise if anyone misunderstood this. I can not enough express the fact that I - as well as the entire school strike movement - are against any possible form of violence. It goes without saying but I say it anyway.'

And that followed on the heels of another high-profile Twitter storm after Thunberg was named TIME magazine's person of the year.

Thunberg, who was returning from the COP25 climate summit in Madrid, quickly followed up her tweet, writing: 'Our train from Basel was taken out of traffic. Slingers let down by poor defence, Basketball News & Top Stories - The Straits Times

Posted: 15 Dec 2019 11:07 PM PST

Familiar failures came back to haunt the Singapore Slingers as they slumped to a 90-83 defeat by Alab Pilipinas in their opening Asean Basketball League (ABL) fixture at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex yesterday.

The visitors had begun the fourth quarter with a 59-50 lead but their defence collapsed as they allowed Alab to score a stunning 40 points and claim their second win of the season.

The Slingers' chief tormentor was Alab shooting guard Khalif Wyatt. He hit four three-pointers in the first five minutes of that decisive final quarter and eventually scored a game-high 28 points.

Slingers coach Neo Beng Siang said: "We're obviously disappointed with the loss but we have to give credit to Alab. They came back and shot pretty well in the last quarter.

"We played pretty good defence in the first three quarters, but (in the final quarter) the players (over-committed) too much at times.

"We needed to get ourselves up on defence because when we are up, we're not giving easy shots or easy threes, that's the way they can come back."

Slingers swingman Xavier Alexander led his side with 26 points and 10 rebounds but crucially missed half of his 12 free-throw attempts and committed four turnovers.

Anthony McClain and Marcus Elliott had mixed debuts for the Slingers. The former, a 2.13m centre, had a decent outing with 25 points and 12 rebounds while the latter, who was the 2017 ABL World Import MVP, had an indifferent start with his new club.

Elliot managed just 11 points after connecting on only four of his 21 field goals, including going one from seven from beyond the arc.

LOOKING TO HOME COMFORTS

It doesn't really affect our confidence at the moment because it's our first game and we're looking forward to the home crowd.

NEO BENG SIANG, Slingers coach, on the need for the team to bounce back and win their next game at the OCBC Arena.

The two local starters Delvin Goh and Leon Kwek had 12 and three points respectively.

The Slingers had been hoping to get off to a winning start after last season's disappointment where they came agonisingly close to their first ABL title, only to miss out after an 84-81 loss to CLS Knights Indonesia in the Finals title decider.

It was the third time in the last four campaigns that the Slingers finished as overall runners-up.

However, Neo was not unduly worried that last night's defeat was an omen of things to come this term.

It was their first game of the season, he said, and his team are still a work in progress.

He urged them, though, to bounce back in their next game against Macau Wolf Warriors at the OCBC Arena on Sunday.

He said: "It doesn't really affect our confidence at the moment because it's our first game and we're looking forward to the home crowd.

"We definitely need to bounce back. The key thing is to give ourselves a win back home."

Jamie Carragher says Arsenal's defenders 'don't know what they're doing' after Man City debacle - Sky Sports

Bacary Sagna and Jamie Carragher analyse Raheem Sterling's goal against Arsenal, and Carra says the Arsenal defenders dropping off attackers is a disease that is sweeping through the squad

Arsenal defenders looked clueless in their defeat to Manchester City with their performance part of a "disease", Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.

The Gunners shipped three first-half goals at the Emirates as Manchester City ran riot despite registering only four shots on target, as the hosts were picked apart with ease.

Arsenal have conceded only five goals fewer than bottom-of-the-table Watford and kept two clean sheets all season - the joint-fewest in the Premier League, with Carragher incredulous about the manner of their latest showing.

"Every time I watch them play, every time the ball comes in on the attack they just drop off," he said. "Remember the Norwich goal where [Shkodran] Mustafi and [David] Luiz let [Teemu] Pukki get it and turn?

"It's something that needs to change on the training ground. Keep the line and press. I said on commentary about it. They drop off when they should press, they press when they should drop off. It's like they don't know what they're doing.

"Sometimes you look at a big mistake in a goal; Calum Chambers loses the ball second half, Arsenal go through on goal. Everyone can see that. But these are things that kill the team. It's your job and sometimes you think you're looking after yourself, but you're hurting the rest of the team. That's why David Luiz isn't playing.

"I'm glad he's gone with Calum Chambers. We know Luiz isn't good enough, that's all he does, drops off to protect himself. But he's catching the disease as well too - make the mistakes being aggressive and going forward, I'm sure that's what Freddie Ljungberg wants. Do it that way, doing the right thing."

All three of Man City's three goals came from Arsenal's defensive mistakes and the Sky Sports pundit team analysed each of them after the game...

Joleon Lescott: "The fact Fernandinho is allowed to run into midfield and play the pass, no one gets near Gabriel Jesus, it is disappointing to see that no one can get near Man City. There's no one near De Bruyne either. Collectively, they'll be annoyed with that."

Graeme Souness: "Pepe just lets Fernandinho waltz past him, it's not my job to stop him - oh yes it is."

Arsenal 0-2 Man City (Sterling, 15)

Raheem Sterling doubled Man City's lead
Raheem Sterling doubled Man City's lead

Bacary Sagna: "First of all, Pepe loses the ball in an easy way, it's too easy for Man City to get out from that and Arsenal keep dropping off. De Bruyne is surrounded by three players but still manages to get away and cross the ball.

"Even if De Bruyne is clever and knows where to stand, there are more ball watchers than defenders and they should stick to players more, be more aggressive because if you give too much respect to these players they will hurt you."

Joleon Lescott: "They just cut through Arsenal so easily. Sead Kolasinac at the back post runs in too early. When you've got that many numbers back you'd think there'd be someone making a tackle or a block, you think you're doing alright and then suddenly City are so precise with their passing, they're clinical."

Arsenal 0-3 Man City (De Bruyne, 40)

Jamie Carragher: "From Arsenal's point of view, it's so bad. Using Calum Chambers as a shield and bend it round him, but Arsenal can't defend like that. They just drop off and drop off. Go to the ball."

Joleon Lescott: "It's very rare you look at an Arsenal defence and say what a great block, what a great challenge. They're allowing people to get shots on target there by dropping off. Matteo Guendouzi there, if Rodri or Fernandinho are doing that they're taking the yellow card for a foul and not letting the opposition get the shot away."

Anna Karina, Acclaimed French New Wave Actress, Dies At 79 - NPR

Anna Karina, the French New Wave actress who in the 1960s established herself as a fixture in films directed by Jean-Luc Godard, died on Saturday in Paris. She was 79.

France's culture minister confirmed the news, saying on Sunday that "her look was the look of New Wave. It will remain so forever."

Danish-born Karina hitchhiked to Paris at the age of 17 following a short stint as a cabaret singer. Soon after, she met fashion designer Coco Chanel, who convinced her to change her name to Anna Karina from her birth name, Hanne Karin Bayer.

Best known for typifying 1960s cool with her on-screen mix of cunning and nonchalance, Karina's roles helped popularize a type of visually gripping and technically precise filmmaking that still holds influence today.

When Godard was working on his debut feature film, Breathless, he noticed Karina in a Palmolive ad in which she was in a bathtub covered in soap suds.

Karina was an inexperienced actress at the time, but Godard was inspired by her and offered her a part in the film. She turned it down because the role required a nude scene.

As Karina told NPR in a 2001 interview, Godard did not forget about her. Three months later, the director rang her up and asked her to star in the film The Little Soldier.

"So I said, `Do I have to take my clothes off?' He said, `No, no. You have to play the main part.' So I said, `Well, you know, I'm not even 18. I could never do that.' And he said, `Well, you don't have to,'" she said. "'You just have to do what I tell you to do.'"

The following year, Karina and Godard were married and the two formed both personal and artistic bonds, launching a period in Godard's career that historians call the Karina years.

"He taught me so, so many things," Karina told NPR. "It was like Pygmalion," she said, referring to the play by George Bernard Shaw.

During that time, Godard directed films such as My Life to Live and Pierrot Le Fou, often casting Karina as a high-spirited and capricious thrill-seeker who seduced men and even killed some of them.

Although Godard and Karina become something of a celebrity couple in the art film world, the two divorced after just four years.

"He would say he was going out for cigarettes and then come back three weeks later," she told the Guardian.

Yet the acclaim she attracted from her work across seven films with Godard led her to be cast by other prestigious directors, including Luchino Visconti, George Cukor and Jacques Rivette.

But it was her work with Godard that remained the most influential of her career. In her 2001 NPR interview, she said Godard's working methods were just as distinctive as they were misunderstood. For instance, her roles were highly scripted, she said, not acts of improvisation, as Godard had done in other instances.

"He would not change one word. Never. Of course, if you had a good idea once in a while, he would use that. But if not, we're not allowed to say a word for another," Karina told NPR. "They're so natural that people, most of the time, thought that you were just talking, you know, saying whatever we wanted to say, which is totally false."

Karina went on to direct some of her own films, mostly recently the 2008 French-Canadian film Victoria. A lifelong singer, she also collaborated on music with Serge Gainsbourg and she wrote several books.

New Yorker film critic Richard Brody, who published a book on the work of Godard, said the Karina's acting career, especially in the 1960s, left a substantial mark on French New Wave and more recent film-making alike.

"First, the films liberated the cinema from nostalgia for superseded aesthetics sustained by a hidebound industry," Brody wrote in a 2016 appreciation in The New Yorker. "Then, decades later, they nourished a new wave of nostalgia for the very era of radical change that they'd helped to create."

UFC 245 results: Kamaru Usman silences Colby Covington with fifth-round TKO to retain title - MMA Fighting

Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:37 AM PST

Kamaru Usman was determined to silence Colby Covington.

A power striking attack that likely shattered Covington's jaw capped off by two staggering knockdowns in the fifth round helped Usman accomplish his goal as he defended the welterweight title in the UFC 245 main event.

"This one's not just for me. This one's for the whole entire world right now," Usman said in celebration.

Covington, who relished the jeers from the crowd, put up a serious fight because Usman had to battle through every minute of every round until he finally got the TKO in round 5.

There was no feeling out process whatsoever with Usman looking to establish his right hand in the opening round and Covington firing back with punches in bunches. Usman was finding success with his lead right hand as he took advantage of a longer reach while Covington was settling into a rhythm with a volume striking attack.

Through two rounds neither fighter attempted a takedown and the difference seemed to be Covington's pace as he was connecting with the better shots, although Usman landed plenty of his own in return.

As much as Covington's corner implored him to push the pace, Usman was able to slow him down by targeting the body with a series of uppercuts and the occasional kick.

Heading into the fourth round, Covington told his corner that he may have suffered a broken jaw but he still came out firing with no fear of the consequences. In fact, Covington landed with arguably his best punches up to that point in the fight as he blasted Usman with a stiff right hand and a hard uppercut during a fiery exchange.

Usman was at his best when he stayed technical with his boxing, which led to that same right hand connecting flush on Covington's already damaged jaw.

With five minutes remaining, Usman and Covington were both asked to dig deep to pull out the win after an impossibly close fight. Covington continued to fire down the middle with a stinging left but Usman saw an opening for that powerful right hand.

The beginning of the end came after Usman blasted Covington with two devastating right hands and it was the second shot that put the outspoken former interim champion down for the last time. Usman swarmed on him with punches as Covington tried to hold onto his legs but referee Marc Goddard saw enough and called a stop to the contest at 4:10 into the final round.

"He was tough as nails. He caught me a few times. My mind is stronger than all these guys," Usman said following the stoppage.

"I'm the best in the world. I'm going to keep improving and I'm going to give you guys a show each and every time."

It was a statement performance for Usman, who endured months of trash talk from Covington leading up to the fight. There were no post fight comments from Covington, however, as he sprinted out of the Octagon in protest after disagreeing with the stoppage by the referee in the final round.

Anna Karina, the French New Wave starlet who rose to international acclaim in films directed by her then-husband Jean-Luc Godard, has died. She was 79.

Karina died Saturday at 2.38pm in Paris from cancer, her agent Laurent Balandras told The Hollywood Reporter. Her husband Dennis Berry was by her side.

She and Godard were married from 1961-64, and she served as his muse in such memorable works as A Woman Is a Woman (1961) — for which she received a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival — Vivre sa vie (1962), Band of Outsiders (1964), Pierrot le Fou (1965) and Alphaville (1965).

The actress' productive career was not limited to the movies of Godard, however. She accumulated more than 50 feature credits, working with other major auteurs like Jacques Rivette, Luchino Visconti, Chris Marker, Volker Schlöndorff and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Karina also headlined a number of English-language productions, including Guy Green's The Magus (1968), J. Lee Thompson's Before Winter Comes (1968), George Cukor's Justine (1969), Tony Richardson's Laughter in the Dark (1969) and Jean-Yves Prate's ReginaRoma (1982), in which she starred alongside Anthony Quinn and Ava Gardner.

A former fashion model and actress in commercials, Karina had a side career as a French pop chanteuse, releasing two singles and an album for the 1967 musical Anna, with songs composed by Serge Gainsbourg. She released another album, Une histoire d'amour, in 1999, as well as two musical adaptations of classic stories by Hans Christian Andersen.

Born Hanne-Karine Blarke Bayer in Copenhagen in 1940, Karina was raised by her grandparents and her mother, who ran a clothing store. She began modeling at age 15 for Danish fashion magazines and was an extra on a few dozen movies.

When she was just shy of 18, Karina decided to try her luck in Paris. She was soon discovered by a modeling scout and began posing for such French fashion magazines as Elleand Marie Claire while also being featured in ads for Palmolive, Pepsodent and Coca-Cola.

It was during a run-in with Coco Chanel in 1958 that Hanne-Karine changed her name to Anna Karina, which the fashion designer told her sounded better. She used the moniker for her movie career, which began in earnest in 1960 with A Woman Is a Woman— just Godard's second feature to be released —and lasted until 2008 with Victoria, a road movie she directed as well as starred in.

The initial encounter between Godard, the enfant terrible of the French New Wave who was about to make his 1960 breakthrough masterpiece Breathless, and the young and unknown Danish model-actress did not go smoothly. It would serve as a preview of the fiery professional and personal relationship the two would have the next six years.

Godard saw Karina in a commercial and tried to cast her for a small role in Breathless. When he told her she would have to take her clothes off in front of the camera, she walked off the project, telling her friends that he was nothing more than a thug.

Still, the director went after her again, offering her the lead in Le Petit Soldat (made in 1960 by not released until 1963), in which she played a young heroine, Veronica Dreyer, who falls for an undercover French agent (Michel Subor) in Geneva during the Algerian War.

Known for his orneriness on the set, Godard nearly brought Karina to tears when shooting one of the film's best sequences, where she's interrogated by her lover and subjected to an impromptu photo seance. The production of Le Petit Soldat lasted for two months and was beset with problems, yet by the end of it, Godard and Karina had fallen in love.

They married in March 1961, with a first ceremony taking place in Switzerland and a second one in Paris that was attended by a who's who of French cinema at the time: François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jacques Rivette and Godard producer Georges de Beauregard. The wedding photos made the cover of the tabloid Paris-Match under the headline, "The New Wave Bride."

But their euphoria was short-lived. Karina, who was already pregnant at the time, lost the baby a few months later and became sterile. The remainder of their marriage was marked by an intense cinematic collaboration and a highly contemptuous off-screen relationship filled with reports of bitter disputes and extramarital affairs.

Still, some of their greatest work was done during that period: the deconstructed musical comedy A Woman Is a Woman, co-starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean-Claude Brialy; the stark black-and-white street drama Vivre sa vie, where Karina lights up the screen as a Paris prostitute; the tragic political pop thriller Pierrot le Fou, also with Belmondo; and the experimental sci-fi flick Alphaville.

The Godard-Karina alliance often has been compared to history's other major collaborations between filmmakers and actresses — Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich, Ingmar Bergman and Harriet Andersson, Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth and Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman, among them. The Nouvelle Vague couple was one of the more prolific of the bunch, making seven features and a short during their brief time together.

Karina branched out to other directors and countries, working with Roger Vadim (1964's La Ronde), Rivette (1966's The Nun) and Michel Deville (1966's Tender Sharks) in France; Valerio Zurlini (1965's The Camp Followers) and Visconti (1967's The Stranger) in Italy; and Schlöndorff (1969's Michael Kohlhaas) and Fassbinder (1976's Chinese Roulette) in Germany.

In 1967, she released the hit singles "Roller Girl" and "Sous le soleil exactement," both written by Gainsbourg for Pierre Koralnik's Anna, which was broadcast on French television that year. Karina would continue to work as a singer in the decades that followed, performing live and releasing a second album in 1999.

After Godard, she was married to actor Pierre Fabre, actor-director Daniel Duval and writer-director Dennis Berry, who would cast her in his features Last Song (1987) and Chloé (1996), the latter alongside a young Marion Cotillard.

More than two decades after her divorce from Godard, Karina was thrown into a surprise reunion with him on a 1987 episode of the French talk show Lunettes noires pour nuit blanche, hosted by Thierry Ardisson. Obviously caught off-guard, she froze and broke out into tears, walking off the set before returning a few minutes later to have Godard tell her, "You don't come on TV to cry."

In 2017, Karina was crowned Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Speaking with Filmmaker magazine a year earlier, she reflected on what it was like to work with Godard, who was 10 years her senior, in the heyday of the French New Wave.

"Things have changed," she said. "But at the time, if you were a woman, you didn't really have a voice. If you were a woman it was just, 'Be beautiful and shut up.' "

T-Mobile’s 5G network: 4 reasons to switch, 4 reasons to wait - Tom's Guide

Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:33 AM PST

T-Mobile has thrown the switch on a new 5G network. And unlike previous 5G efforts by rival carriers that have been limited to a handful of cities — and only select areas of those cities, at that — T-Mobile's 5G network reaches across the country.

No more standing on street corners wondering if you can maintain a 5G connection. If you live in one of the areas where T-Mobile's 5G reaches — and with a network that covers 5,000 cities and 200 million people, the odds are more in your favor than ever — you're going to get consistent 5G coverage on a compatible 5G phone.

We had the chance to test T-Mobile's 5G service last week with a OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren. And while additional testing is required to produce a definitive verdict about that particular phone, we can confirm that T-Mobile's 5G service provides a consistent connection that even reaches indoors — something that 5G networks from rival carriers can't always claim.

So now's the time to grab a 5G phone, hop on T-Mobile's new network end enjoy the faster speeds and lower latency that have defined what 5G is supposed to be, right? For most people, probably not.

While launching a 5G network with the reach that T-Mobile's has to offer is certainly a big step, it's just another milestone in the 5G transition that's probably going to take a bit longer than the networking standard's fiercest advocates are willing to admit. There are plenty of solid arguments for taking advantage of T-Mobile's 5G network now, but just as many counter-arguments for continuing to play the waiting game.

Here's a closer look at why you might want to give T-Mobile's 5G network a try, and the reasons why it might make more sense to wait a little bit longer to see how 5G develops in 2020.

T-Mobile's 5G network is pretty far-reaching...

Head to T-Mobile's map of its 5G network, and enter in your hometown. While it's not a certainty that T-Mobile's 5G signal will reach you, you've got a better chance than you would with other carriers. Verizon's 5G network is limited to 18 cities right now, with Big Red targeting 30 cities by year's end. Sprint's 5G is only available in 9 cities.

Even more important, T-Mobile's 5G signal, which is built on low-band spectrum, can make its way indoors. During our Maui tests, we were able to stay steadily connected to T-Mobile's 5G network even from inside a hotel room. That's a stark contrast to millimeter wave-based 5G networks like Verizon's, which require you to be in the line of sight for a 5G tower and where signals have problems with physical obstructions like walls and windows.

...But T-Mobile's 5G speeds aren't that much faster than LTE

5G may be faster than LTE, but in this current iteration of T-Mobile's 5G network, that speed improvement isn't exactly life-changing.

As extensive as T-Mobile's coverage may be, it's not particularly fast — certainly nowhere near the 1 Gbps download speeds that are commonly touted as one of 5G's big benefits. That's because the low-band 600Mhz spectrum T-Mobile used for its nationwide network sacrifices faster speeds for wider reach.

T-Mobile says to expect about a 20% improvement over the download speeds you'd get on its LTE network. We certainly saw that during our Maui testing, with speeds improving by as much as 36% over what we were getting on a phone connected to T-Mobile's LTE in the same location. But in that instance, our 5G-compatible OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren was seeing download speeds of 152 Mbps — fast, sure, but not exactly a record-setting pace. And in many locations around Maui, we were seeing sub-100 Mbps speeds, even on 5G, which were sometimes on par with our LTE-connected device.

The bottom line? 5G may be faster than LTE, but in this current iteration of T-Mobile's 5G network, that speed improvement isn't exactly life-changing.

T-Mobile's network is only going to get faster

Sure, T-Mobile's 5G may only be a little bit faster than its LTE network at present. But it's not going to always stay that way. T-Mobile says to expect a 10x improvement by 2024, though cynics with access to a calendar will note that big jump is five years out.

A more immediate improvement is just on the horizon, though. T-Mobile's proposed merger with Sprint has won all the necessary regulatory approvals. Once the two companies are combined, T-Mobile will be able to incorporate Sprint's mid-band spectrum into its own network. Mid-band delivers faster speeds than T-Mobile's current low-band offering, as we discovered when we tested Sprint's 5G network in Dallas and Los Angeles. Dallas was one of Sprint's first 5G markets, and speeds weren't much faster than LTE, similar to our experience with T-Mobile. But in Los Angeles, we saw speeds regularly topping 200 Mbps and sometimes reaching 450 Mbps.

T-Mobile and Sprint expect to join forces in 2020, expanding their 5G footprint.

Standing between T-Mobile and Sprint joining forces is a lawsuit filed by several states' attorneys general that are seeking to block the merger, fearing less competition in the wireless world. Even if T-Mobile and Sprint prevail in the lawsuit, don't expect a resolution until 2020 at the earliest. Still, with people holding onto their smartphones for longer these days, that 5G phone you buy now could see some serious speed gains in the future.

... But current 5G phones aren't entirely future-proof

Just one problem with the theory outlined above — while it's true that the 5G phone you buy today will benefit from the addition of Sprint's mid-band spectrum to T-Mobile's nationwide 5G network, they won't be able to work with millimeter wave-based networks like the ones T-Mobile has deployed in a half-dozen cities. And as everyone from carriers to chip suppliers like Qualcomm have pointed out, true 5G networks will incorporate every part from the spectrum — from the expansive reach of low-band to the faster speeds of millimeter wave.

In other words, if you buy a 5G phone that works on T-Mobile's network today, it's likely you'll see some speed gains as T-Mobile builds out its network. But top speeds may be beyond your reach unless you upgrade to a new handset. So why not put that 5G jump off until there are handsets that truly can take advantage of future advances in 5G networks?

T-Mobile has some pretty compelling deals on 5G phones

Up until now, one of the biggest barriers to making the leap to 5G outside of the limitations of 5G networks were the phones themselves. They're pretty expensive, even in this era of flagship phones with $999 starting prices. That even goes for the two 5G phones that work on T-Mobile's newly launched network — the $1,299 Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G and $899 OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren.

But T-Mobile's willing to make a deal to get you to hop on to its 5G network. You can get a free Note 10 Plus 5G when you buy another Note 10 Plus 5G and add a new line. (You can also defray some of the cost by paying off your 5G Samsung phone in 36 monthly installments.) The deal on the 5G-ready OnePlus phone — which costs the same as a Pixel 4 XL — is even better. Trade in an eligible phone — an iPhone 8 or later, Galaxy S9 or later, Galaxy Note 9 or later, Pixel 3, LG G8 or OnePlus 7 Pro — and you can get the 5G phone for free when you switch your wireless service to T-Mobile. Suddenly one of the biggest expenses in switching to 5G has been taken care of.

... But 5G phones are still pretty limited

You may have noticed that we've only mentioned two phones thus far. That's because those are the only two that work with T-Mobile's nationwide network. (The carrier also sells Samsung's Galaxy S10 5G, but that phone only works with millimeter wave-based networks, like the ones the Uncarrier has set up in six cities.)

More 5G phones are on the way. When it launched its network earlier this month, T-Mobile said it planned to offer 15 5G-capable phones in 2020. Surely, that total includes the iPhone 12, which is expected to add 5G capabilities when it arrives in the fall. And some of those anticipated 5G devices will be less expensive than the initial 5G-ready phones we saw this year. After all, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 765 chipset this month — a less expensive mobile processor with integrated 5G that's expected to broaden the range of 5G-ready phones in 2020.

The Snapdragon 765 will bring 5G to a wider array of phones in 2020.

Put another way, you could grab one of the two phones that are available right now for T-Mobile's 5G network. Or you could wait anywhere from six to nine months and have a lot more options to choose from for your first 5G phone.

If the cost of 5G phones has you gulping about what the new network standard will mean for your bottom line, T-Mobile offers one last incentive to make the 5G transition a little easier. It's not charging extra for 5G coverage.

The carrier includes 5G service with its standard unlimited plan. The Magenta plan costs $70 a month for one line, and discounts as additional lines brings the cost of unlimited data for a family of four to $160 a month. (At least, that's the normal price — under a current promotion, T-Mobile is waiving the cost of the fourth line, so you'll pay just $140.)

T-Mobile is promising a low-cost plan that includes 5G once its merger with Sprint is completed.

Free 5G doesn't sound like it will be a short-time promotion either. As part of its merger with Sprint, T-Mobile said it would offer the same or better rate plans for the next three years. It's also planning on including 5G coverage with a $15-a-month T-Mobile Connect plan that includes 2GB of data, though that plan is contingent on the Sprint merger moving forward.

... But other carriers are making progress, too

Perhaps the greatest reason to hold off on 5G, at least for now, is that it remains early days for the new network. And T-Mobile isn't the only carrier working to build out its 5G coverage.

This month, AT&T takes a step forward of its own, augmenting the millimeter wave-based 5G Plus service it's already launched in 21 cities with wider reaching low-band spectrum that will finally be available to customers outside of corporate users. AT&T's newly launched 5G effort isn't as extensive as what T-Mobile just launched — it will only be available in five cities initially with four more to come at an unspecified date — but it's an indicator that other carriers aren't standing in place. Verizon, too, is hoping to meet its goal of 30 cities with 5G coverage by year's end, with more to come in 2020.

The 5G landscape is going to continue to shift in 2020, from network reach to 5G performance to the types of phones that will connect via 5G. As tempting as it may be to jump on the first wave now that T-Mobile has taken 5G national, there's no harm in waiting a few more months to see what devices come out and how service improves.

Scoring depth on full display as Stars overwhelm Predators with four-goal second-period - The Dallas Morning News

Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:04 AM PST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The first round in the postseason went to the Stars in April. So did the first round of the regular season.

In a rematch of the first-round playoff series from last season and a prelude to next month's Winter Classic, the Stars used a four-goal second-period outburst to cruise by the Predators 4-1 on Saturday night in Nashville. It was a surgical decimation of the Predators in the second period, with Dallas capitalizing on Nashville mistakes and showcasing their own skill.

Blake Comeau scored a shorthanded goal — a laser off the near post and in — by slipping behind the Predators power play and receiving a long flip from Jason Dickinson. Roope Hintz beat Pekka Rinne between his legs with the quick release he's become known for this season.

Jamie Oleksiak — after a strong effort from Alexander Radulov to keep the puck in the offensive zone — scored his first goal since rejoining the Stars last season by tucking a backhand past Rinne. Andrew Cogliano pounced on a Ryan Ellis turnover, darted to the net, and roofed his own rebound.

It was a combination of jagged play from Nashville, and smooth finishing from Dallas. And it formed the latest chapter in a building rivalry.

"It seems like we've built a pretty good rivalry, especially with the playoff series we had last year and now the outdoor game this year," Comeau said. "We knew it was going to be a huge divisional game for us coming in to it."

"We know that we knocked them out of the playoffs last year," Stars interim coach Rick Bowness said before the game. "We know they're going to be coming hard, this is their first kick at us."

Bridgestone Arena hyped the matchup as a Winter Classic preview.

The video board hanging over the ice used the teams' specially designed logos for the event and not the primary motifs displayed on their jerseys Saturday night. In the crowd, for the first time at the same game, Stars and Predators Winter Classic jerseys were spotted in the same venue. The arena advertised Lynyrd Skynyrd's New Year's Eve concert in Dallas. The "Road to the Winter Classic" filming crew was in the building.

If the Cotton Bowl is as hospitable to the Stars as Bridgestone Arena has been recently, Dallas will be just fine on Jan. 1.

After notching just one regulation win in Nashville from 2013-18, the Stars have not lost in regulation in Nashville the last two seasons. Saturday's win improved them to 3-0-1 in the regular season on Broadway, plus a 2-1 playoff record when the loss came in overtime.

Radulov's two-point effort led the Stars on Saturday night, as he picked up assists on both Hintz and Oleksiak's goals. Since he was a healthy scratch last week against Winnipeg, Radulov has six points in four games.

"Rads was a hungry guy today," Bowness said. "When he's hungry, with his intensity, he's an effective player and he's hard to play against because he's just a dog on a bone. He won't let go. He's going to stay on that puck and keep fighting so give him credit."

Radulov added: "Sometimes it's clicking, sometimes it's going your way. It's a long season. There's going to be some times when things [are] not going to go your way. You just have to continue working, compete and win those little battles in the corners, in the zone, on the blue lines, on the boards. Simple as that."

While Radulov led the way for the Stars, depth scoring from Cogliano and Faksa was welcome, as were 37 saves from backup goaltender Anton Khudobin.

Oleksiak's first: Defenseman Jamie Oleksiak scored his first goal of the season, snapping an 82-game goalless drought (including playoffs). His last goal came over a year ago, on Nov. 5, 2018 as a member of the Penguins.

Oleksiak received a feed in the slot from Radulov and deked Pekka Rinne before depositing the puck in the vacant net. It was Oleksiak's first goal as a Star since Dec. 5, 2017.

The goal helps amplify Oleksiak's impact on the season so far this year, when he's been asked to play a top-four role alongside Miro Heiskanen. He's been active in the offensive zone, pinching down walls often. He's been physical in the defensive zone, using his 6-7 frame.

"Jamie Oleksiak, he's probably one of our most underrated players right now," Bowness said. "He has played very, very well all year for us. He's been very consistent. He can skate. He's doing everything we need him to do. He's earned the minutes. He's earned that top-four ranking and good for him.

"If you go back to last year, we missed him in that playoff series with St. Louis. We did. He was an important part of our team as the season went on. When he went down in the playoff series, that hurt us. He's picked up where he left off from last year so good for him."

FCC scoring: The Stars' FCC line — Radek Faksa, Andrew Cogliano and Blake Comeau — accounted for two goals on Saturday night, an unexpected injection of offense from the typical shutdown line.

Usually, the line is tasked with slowing down the opposition's best players. On Saturday night, the roles were reversed.

"We obviously have some assignments some nights with some of the other team's top lines," Comeau said. "But we're starting to hold on to pucks more. We're starting to generate more shots and that's something that we talked about coming into this year as a line was trying to provide some secondary offense."

Cogliano said: "We're just trying to contribute. I think we have a line that has to do certain things on a nightly basis to make our team good and make our team effective. Goals are bonuses and when we can provide them, it adds a lot to our team."

All three members of the line have the ability to chip in offensively and they've done so throughout their career. Comeau has five seasons of 30-plus points. Cogliano has seven such seasons. And Faksa is tied for third on the team with seven goals.

"We're not going to measure their value to the team on points," Bowness said. "Their leadership, playing the game the right way on a consistent basis, their ability to kill penalties. All those thing are just as important as any points they get."

Khudobin's house: The Stars have been great the last two seasons in Nashville, and Anton Khudobin is a big reason why. The backup goaltender has started four times in Bridgestone Arena and is 3-0-1 with a .967 save percentage and 1.25 goals against average.

He made 37 saves on Saturday night.

"He was there for us today all the way, especially at the beginning," Radulov said. "In the second period, when we scored one and two, he was there for us. They got a push and Anton was making key saves. That's huge."

Prior to joining the Stars, Khudobin was 0-4-0 in Nashville.

Lineup changes: Justin Dowling re-entered the lineup after he was a healthy scratch in the last three games, replacing Mattias Janmark, who missed the game with an upper-body injury. Dowling played on a line with Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski.

Defenseman John Klingberg was back in the lineup after missing Friday night's game due to a family illness. Taylor Fedun, who scored a goal in the overtime loss to Vegas, came out of the lineup.

There could have been a case for keeping Fedun (two goals and seven assists in 22 games) in the lineup over Roman Polak, who has played all but one game since he returned from a fractured sternum on Nov. 14.

"Roman's been doing a great job on the penalty kill, so we just want to keep him in there," Bowness said.
