All or nothing for Guardiola against Real Madrid - MARCA.com

Real Madrid Catalan makes return to the Bernabeu

MARCA

The tie of the Champions League round of 16 is surely Real Madrid against Manchester City.

A lot of the focus will be on Pep Guardiola as he returns to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, a stadium that has marked his career.

Lots could change between now and March but, with City 14 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League, Guardiola's side's title defence is all but over already.

Having won the league twice before, Guardiola's targets are now firmly geared towards success on the European stage.

He's never guided Manchester City past the quarter-finals in the Champions League, with the club's furthest run - to the semi-finals under Manuel Pellegrini - coming the season before he arrived.

In fact, the Catalan coach hasn't had much luck in the competition since leaving Barcelona in 2012.

He enjoyed great duels with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu during his time at the Camp Nou, with a 6-2 victory a definite high point.

With five wins and a draw away at Real Madrid in charge of Barcelona, Guardiola's record at the Bernabeu was immaculate.

His Bayern Munich side also visited Chamartin when they were beaten 1-0 in the 2013/14 Champions League semi-final second leg after an initial 4-0 defeat in Germany.

Guardiola has lost just four of his 17 meetings with Real Madrid as a coach, but he's lost each of his last three games against them.

The current Manchester City boss remains an unpopular figure amongst Madridistas, with his most recent jab coming in February 2019 as he missed out Real Madrid on his list of the best teams of the decade.

If Guardiola is to avoid his joint-earliest elimination as a coach in the Champions League, he'll have to get past Real Madrid this time.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus Star Wars Edition: Gallery, specs, and more - Android Authority

Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:07 AM PST

A little well-known fact about me: I love Star Wars. When a new movie comes out, I not only see it opening night, but again the next morning so I can really watch it. So when Samsung announced it was launching a Galaxy Note 10 Plus (one of our favorite smartphones of 2019) with a Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker theme, I knew I had to get my hands on one.

This thing ain't cheap, and it's not for everyone, but damn if this doesn't make me excited for The Rise of Skywalker.

First, the box.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus Star Wars Edition box

samsung galaxy note 10 plus star wars edition box 1
  • What's in the box?
    • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus
      • Accessories: Wired AKG earbuds and quick charger
    • Samsung Galaxy Buds
    • Leather case for the Note 10 Plus
    • Commemorative plaque

Samsung didn't skimp on the box — it's one of the coolest packages I've seen. On the front sleeve, you'll find the one and only Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. Take the sleeve off, and you'll see his repaired helmet without the hood. This is definitely one of the more interesting aesthetic choices JJ Abrams took with Kylo Ren in The Rise of Skywalker. It looks awesome.

Flip up the lid and you'll see your first two goodies: a leather case on the left and a commemorative plaque on the right. Below that is a slide-out compartment that houses the phone and Galaxy Buds. And of course, the whole thing is decked out in Star Wars logos and little stars.

Samsung is giving buyers the full treatment here. This box is cool, and it better be for how much it costs.

The leather case

samsung galaxy note 10 plus star wars edition leather case 3

This is a really nice leather case for the Galaxy Note 10 Plus. The leather is soft and feels pretty high quality. Around back you'll find, again, a silhouette of Kylo Ren's mask with a Star Wars logo underneath. The inside of the case is a nice microfiber material and has a First Order logo engraved in the center.

The case is nice, but I don't think it's the most protective case out there. The top, right, and left sides are all covered completely, but the bottom of the phone is mostly exposed. Also, the edges on the front of the case don't extend over the display, so you won't want to put your phone screen-down with this case on.

My favorite part of the case is actually the way it accentuates the Note 10 Plus' camera module on the back. It lets through a bit of the red trim around the camera sensors, which provides some much-needed color accents to contrast the black-and-grey aesthetic.

The commemorative plaque

Samsung also includes a Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker commemorative plaque in the box. It doesn't do anything; it's just a plaque. It's a nice plaque, though!

It's pretty heavy and feels super solid. The whole thing has a matte texture and matches the phone quite well. It's a simple rectangle with, you guessed it, a Kylo Ren helmet popping out on the front.

The Galaxy Buds

Alright, now we're getting somewhere. The Star Wars Edition Note 10 Plus also comes with a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds. They're the exact Galaxy Buds we reviewed a few months ago, but these come with a new paint job. The 'buds and the charging case are all black, while the case has a stark red color on the inside. It's sleek.

The Galaxy Note 10 Plus

samsung galaxy note 10 plus star wars edition back glass design

Now to the good stuff. The Galaxy Note 10 Plus included in the box is unsurprisingly Dark Side-themed. The back and sides of the device are dark grey (it almost looks black when there's no light shining on it), while the camera module, power button, and volume buttons are deep red. Around back, under the Samsung logo, you'll see a big First Order logo and another Star Wars logo below that. The S Pen is also bright red, which I'm a huge fan of. If Samsung made a non-Star Wars black-and-red Galaxy Note 10, I'm sure a bunch of people would buy it.

It's not just the hardware that Samsung customized; the software has its own Dark Side theme too. My favorite part of this whole phone is the S Pen noise. When you take out the S Pen, it sounds like you're lighting up your lightsaber. I love it. Putting the S Pen back in its place makes it sound like you're putting away your lightsaber. Check it out below:

Once you boot on the device, you'll quickly notice that just about every part of this phone is Star Wars themed. The stock wallpaper that comes on the device is an up-close look at a First Order Sith Trooper from The Rise of Skywalker. If you're not a fan, you can change it to one of the other eight Star Wars wallpaper options. Available options include a close-up of Kylo Ren's helmet, one each of the Knights of Ren, another Kylo Ren wallpaper with his lightsaber drawn, and a trio of Sith Troopers.

The icons, settings menus, quick settings, Samsung keyboard, and navigation buttons all have their own Dark Side theme, too. The icons are black, white, and red and look very Star Wars-y. Some are just redesigns with simple lines, while the contacts icon, for instance, is a Stormtrooper helmet and the Samsung Internet icon is BB-8's head. An odd choice, but I can't say I hate it.

The keyboard is black and grey, and the quick settings and settings menu is made up of black, grey, and red accents. It's easy on the eyes, so fans of dark themes will be happy here. The dialer even has its own theme, while other apps — like Samsung Messages — has a simple black-and-red theme.

samsung galaxy note 10 plus star wars edition home screen display 2

Other little Star Wars-y sounds are found throughout the rest of the phone. Tapping any of the icons or hitting a navigation button triggers a generic little tech sound. It reminds me of something you'd hear when you click on a menu in a Star Wars video game. I think these sounds would get pretty annoying after a while.

Samsung also customized the boot animation, boot sound, and shutdown animation. When booting up, the Note 10 Plus shows Kylo Ren's helmet coming together, while shutting it down looks like you're coming out of hyperspace.

There's also a cool Sith Trooper-inspired always-on display.

samsung galaxy note 10 plus star wars edition always on display

Other than that, this is the same Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus we reviewed a few months ago. This model has 256GB of onboard storage with 12GB of RAM. This is also the Snapdragon 855-powered version.

I wish Samsung would make each one of these items available for purchase separately. Don't get me wrong — the whole big-box experience is cool — but $1,300 is a big asking price. Maybe sell the phone and leather case in one bundle and make the Galaxy Buds a separate purchase? Personally, I'd consider buying the Note 10 Plus Star Wars Edition with the leather case, but I don't really need the Galaxy Buds.

Also, and this is a given, if you aren't a fan of the Dark Side aesthetic or villians (though, there's no way Ben Solo won't be redeemed in TROS), you probably won't be a huge fan of this one. There's no Light Side equivalent Note 10 Plus with Rey and BB-8 plastered all over the place, but man, wouldn't it be great if there was?

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus Star Wars Edition Bundle

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus Star Wars Edition Bundle is for the true fans. It comes with a Dark Side-themed Galaxy Note 10 Plus (256GB) and a red S Pen, a Kylo Ren-themed leather case, a black/red pair of Galaxy Buds, and a commemorative plaque.

If you consider yourself a massive Star Wars fan, I don't think you'll be sorry with the Galaxy Note 10 Plus Star Wars Edition. Samsung put a lot of work into making this phone truly one of a kind. Although most of the changes are simply new color schemes and app overlays, little changes like the red S Pen (and that sweet lightsaber sound) and the shutdown animation make this phone a no-brainer for the Star Wars diehards. I can't recommend this enough if you're a Star Wars fan. Just be ready to pay up.

Dish Network CEO Ergen to take stand and defend T-Mobile/Sprint merger - Fox Business

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:33 PM PST

Once again all eyes are on Charlie Ergen.

The volatile Dish Network Chairman, who was the linchpin of the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division's decision to approve the $26.5 billion T-Mobile US, Inc. purchase of Sprint Corporation is expected to take the stand and testify in Federal Court Tuesday, and argue that a coalition of state attorneys general should not be allowed to block the controversial merger.

Ergen was central in the DOJ's decision to allow the merger by agreeing to purchase spectrum from the carriers and start a new, fourth wireless telephone company to address antitrust concerns. Specifically, the deal would eliminate a major provider and lead to higher prices for consumers.

Now Ergen is back on center stage; he's considered the top witness in persuading Senior U.S. District Judge of the Southern District of New York Victor Marrero to ultimately approve the deal by rejecting the government's argument that Dish's wireless company makes for a weak competitor.

On the stand, he's expected to say that Dish will be ready as a major competitor "on day one," which roughly translates to early 2020, said a person with knowledge of Ergen's testimony preparation.

SSPRINT CORP.5.19-0.02-0.38%
DISHDISH NETWORK CORPORATION34.47+0.34+1.01%

A Dish spokesman had no comment. A spokesman for New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is leading the AG court case to block the deal, had no comment.

Under the terms of its deal with the DOJ, Dish will acquire spectrum to start a new wireless carrier and prepaid businesses including Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile. Dish will act as a reseller—providing wireless services to Boost and Virgin customers by using the new T-Mobile's network. Dish has made a number of other commitments as part of its agreement with DOJ, including building out its ultra-fast 5G network by 2023.

In preparation for his testimony tomorrow, Ergen has been practicing with T-Mobile attorneys to make sure he adequately reinforces the company's principal argument: That its purchase of Sprint won't lead to price increases because of Dish's entry into the wireless business.

CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ON FOX BUSINESS

One of the key points at the center of the case brought by the 14 state attorneys led by New York AG James and California AG Xavier Beccera is that by merging T-Mobile and Sprint, the telecom sector will lose a legitimate 4th wireless carrier -- and higher prices for wireless services will follow. The state AG's contend that Dish simply doesn't have the infrastructure to become a competitive force in wireless by taking the place of Sprint as the nation's fourth major carrier.

Not only will Ergen need to defend Dish's ability to compete in the long-term, he will also need to show that he can provide quality service to prepaid customers through its purchase of Boost Mobile, which was part of the DOJ settlement. Prepaid services are wireless deals targeted for low-income people, and some industry observers are dubious that Ergen has a plan and will actually follow-through on serving prepaid customers or building out 5G.

"Ergen is going to come out swinging with his hands tied behind his back," Boost Founder Peter Adderton tells FOX Business. "Ergen can't compete with T-Mobile's prepaid brands but nobody is mentioning prepaid at the trial."

The state AGs filed their case to break up the T-Mobile Sprint merger on June 11th and the trial began on December 9. Current T-Mobile Chief Executive Office John Legere and soon to be T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert testified last week. Sprint Chairman Marcelo Claure and Sprint CEO Michael Combes testified Monday.

Several people close to the companies tell FOX Business they are cautiously optimistic the judge will be receptive to their case. In one round of questioning, Marrero appeared to criticize one of the AGs key economic analysts who tried to argue that T-Mobile's competitors— AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc.—won't look to compete by cutting prices with the newly merged entity.

Whether Ergen can persuade the judge of his ability to compete remains to be seen. The Dish chair is known for his capricious negotiating style leading some to believe he may pivot from the talking points he's been prepped on.

Mitch McConnell wants a show trial — but Democrats don't have to give him one - Salon

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:07 PM PST

Republicans have handed Democrats a political gift by making it clear they plan on acquitting President Trump after the most minimal Senate impeachment trial possible. The question is whether Democrats can seize this opportunity. In a divided Congress, House Democrats control one important weapon. According to many legal experts, they can withhold the articles of impeachment from the Senate — meaning that no impeachment trial can occur until the Republican Senate leadership agrees to some approximation of a fair and thorough process.

Last week Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that there would be "total coordination" between the White House and Senate Republicans in an impeachment trial. He later added that "there will be no difference between the president's position and our position as to how to handle this," saying that the case against Trump "is so darn weak." This is in spite of the fact that we know, beyond all reasonable doubt, that Trump withheld $391 million in military aid from Ukraine while asking that country's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to open an investigation into Vice President Joe Biden, one of Trump's most likely opponents in the 2020 election. Those facts do not prove that the president committed a crime — but that is not the standard for impeachment. The standard is whether there is reasonable evidence that a crime may have occurred — as in a criminal indictment — and that a trial is therefore necessary. That standard has been more than met, at least by anyone who isn't addled by the Cult of Trump.

Advertisement:

One of the most influential Republican senators — Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who chairs the Judiciary Committee — has already said that he has made up his mind. "I'm not trying to pretend to be a fair juror here," Graham said last weekend on "Face the Nation." "What I see coming, happening today is just partisan nonsense."

In the face of this obvious bad faith, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has proposed a set of rules that were agreed upon by both parties for Bill Clinton's impeachment trial in 1999. There is no legal or ethical reason not to apply those rules to Trump's trial. Clinton, after all, was accused of lying under oath about an extramarital affair;Trump is accused of trying to blackmail a foreign leader into helping him discredit a political rival.

We have no idea how McConnell will respond to Schumer's not-so-bold suggestion that Democrats and Republicans should be held to the same standard. Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe recently tweeted that if McConnell "rejects these reasonable ground rules & insists on a non-trial, the House should consider treating that as a breach of the Senate's oath & withholding the Articles until the Senate reconsiders." He later clarified in a follow-up tweet that "by 'withholding' the Articles I don't mean not voting for them — I mean voting for them but holding off on transmitting them to the Senate."

Advertisement:

Tribe elaborated on this idea further in an email to Salon, comparing this process to a corrupt trial in criminal court:

Imagine this scenario: A prosecutor about to obtain a grand jury indictment learns that the foreman of the trial jury (whose members, for purposes of this thought experiment, we'll have to assume are known in advance, as is the case with the Senate though not in the typical criminal case) has threatened to let the accused decide how the trial will be conducted — and has intimated that it will be a "trial" in name only, one orchestrated in close coordination with defense counsel. Other key jurors also announce that they don't intend to listen to any evidence but have already made up their minds to acquit.

Republicans seem to believe they make Trump seem innocent — in the face of widespread public disapproval of his actions — by refusing to take the accusations against him seriously. Yet by more or less revealing that they don't care what Trump did, and will give him a pass no matter what, Republicans have offered Democrats an excellent opportunity to spin a Senate acquittal of Trump as proof that his entire party has been corrupted by him.

That was not exactly Tribe's point, which was more closely tied to legal procedure. In his scenario, he said, a scrupulous prosecutor would refuse to go forward with a fixed trial, and would instead ask the judge to replace the corrupt foreman, along with any other jurors who had clearly made up their minds about the defendant's guilt or innocence. That isn't likely to happen in this case, he continued:

Advertisement:

In the world of impeachment trials, it's unrealistic to imagine that the presiding judge, here the Chief Justice of the United States, would grant any such motion. The next best solution would seem to be the one I've been proposing: The "prosecutor," here whoever Speaker Pelosi designates as the House Managers, should proceed to pin down the indictment by having the full House vote for the two Articles of Impeachment approved last week by the Judiciary Committee, but should then hold that indictment in abeyance, letting it hang like the fabled Sword of Damocles over the heads of both the president and the Senate Majority Leader and those in his caucus who, like Senator Graham, have admitted they will happily violate their oaths of office and break the special oath they will take for purposes of impeachment.

Tribe concluded that Pelosi should let that sword keep hanging there until McConnell and Schumer can reach agreement "on how to conduct the closest possible approximation to a fair trial under the politically charged circumstances."

Would such a maneuver be legal and constitutional? Tribe admitted there is no precedent, but argued it would be "fully consistent with the text, structure, history, and purposes of the Impeachment Power as outlined in the Constitution."

Advertisement:

Allan Lichtman, a political history professor at American University, told Salon that Tribe's suggestion makes political as well as legal sense.

"On a matter as grave as removing a president, the Senate must hold a full trial with both sides able to call live witnesses and present relevant documents. If closed-minded Republicans in the Senate refuse to do so, the House's only recourse is to withhold the articles of impeachment until the Senate agrees to a real trial," Lichtman explained.

Nancy Pelosi's decision-making throughout the impeachment process has clearly been driven, to a significant degree, by political calculation — and especially by the fear that impeachment may damage the Democratic presidential nominee and the House majority in the 2020 elections. Lichtman rejects that argument. "Politically, a truncated process is of least help to Democrats," he said. "A longer process will enable Democrats to present their full case and to continue their investigations. There may well be more corruption to uncover."

Advertisement:

If Pelosi and Schumer can get Senate Republicans to agree to a full and fair trial, even in a partisan context where everyone understands acquittal is likely, then that trial should be held. If not, then sending articles of impeachment to the rigged Senate jury is both irresponsible and tactically stupid, the political equivalent of being gifted with the goose's golden egg and casually tossing it onto the floor.

The stakes are higher than simply winning or losing political office. As Salon columnist Heather Digby Parton wrote on Monday, in previous political eras leaders of different parties agreed "that to at least preserve the ideals behind our democratic system it was important to pay lip service to the spirit of the law."

For instance, during the Iraq war, the Bush administration committed war crimes. But officials didn't come right out and say, "Yes, we torture people. What are you going to do about it?" There were consequences to openly defying the law, which they knew could get quite serious down the road. They understood that to openly endorse war crimes was to let an ugly, dangerous genie out of the bottle. So they claimed it wasn't actually torture and pretended that they believed torture was wrong, insisting they would never do such a thing.

The old-fashioned trope that describes this is, "Hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue." It's certainly not an ideal way for leaders to behave. They should follow the law and the Constitution, and if they don't they should be held accountable. But declaring war on virtue altogether and embracing vice as your organizing principle is what mobsters and tyrants do. That's what's happening under President Trump."

In the summer of 1974, three powerful Republicans — Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott, House Minority Leader John Rhodes and Sen. Barry Goldwater, a conservative hero and former presidential nominee — visited President Richard Nixon at the Old Executive Office Building. Their mission was a grim one: Republicans in Congress, having confronted increasingly incriminating evidence the Watergate scandal, were no longer unified behind Nixon. Impeachment in the House was a certainty, and their message to the president was that he would almost certainly be convicted in the Senate.

Advertisement:

No one should idealize the Republican Party of the 1970s, which was beginning its rightward shift that would lead to the "Reagan revolution" a few years later. Well into the Watergate revelations, most Republicans Party continued to defend Nixon, and to portray the investigation as a partisan campaign to undo his 1972 re-election victory. (One of many echoes between that era and this one.)

When push came to shove, however, the Republicans of 1974 stood by a core principle of the conservative movement — respect for law and order. Nixon was clearly a criminal, and in the end even congressional Republicans who shared his political views refused to stand by him.

Today's Republican Party is manifestly not the party of 1974; no amount of evidence, it appears, will sway them against their Dear Leader. Democrats must face that reality and strategize accordingly. Both morally and politically, they can't risk surrender in a battle for justice, especially when truth is on their side.

Rules Committee prepares for bipartisan warfare to decide full impeachment vote - Daily Mail

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:37 PM PST

Impeachment hearings are back: Congress readies ANOTHER marathon day as Rules Committee prepares for bipartisan warfare to decide exactly how full House debate and vote will take place as early as Wednesday

  • The articles of impeachment have one more stop before heading to the House of Representatives' floor
  • Tomorrow they'll be taken up in the Rules Committee, where 13 lawmakers will decide the length and tone of debate, among other details
  • The Rules Committee meets in a tiny room in the U.S. Capitol and is much smaller than Intelligence and Judiciary, which have handled impeachment so far

The articles of impeachment have one more stop in the House of Representatives before ending up on the floor: the House Rules Committee.

On Tuesday, Rules Committee members are poised to meet at 11 a.m. to hash out the length of debate, what can be said during debate, and other details - as Democrats aim for a full vote as early as Wednesday on the House floor.

Rep. Jim McGovern, a Democrat from Massachusetts, chairs this committee, which historically meets in a tiny committee room on the third floor of the Capitol Building.

Impeachment proceedings move to the Rules Committee, which is chaired by Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern

There's one more logistical hurdle before President Trump (pictured) is likely impeached. The articles of impeachment have to go through the House Rules Committee

This will be a change from the large Longworth chamber that's been the venue for the impeachment hearings thus far.

The committee, too, is much smaller than the House Intelligence and House Judiciary committees, which have handled impeachment proceedings so far.

There are just 13 members, and only four Republicans, with Oklahoma GOP Rep. Tom Cole serving as the current ranking member.

Some familiar faces will be in the room.

Reps. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat, Mary Gay Scanlon, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, and Debbie Lesko, a Republican from Arizona, serve on both the Judiciary Committee and the Rules Committee.

The Judiciary Committee met Thursday for a marathon 14-hour hearing that resulted in House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler declaring a postponed vote.

The Judiciary Committee voted out the two articles of impeachment Friday morning instead.

Lawmakers were then free to leave Washington for the weekend, with impeachment proceedings kicking off again with the Rules Committee Tuesday.

Lawmakers are expected to hash out a number of things - including the kind of language that is used on the floor, according to Roll Call

It's usually a no-no for members of Congress to disparage the president of the United States on the House floor, but since impeachment revolves around the president's misconduct, greater allowances will likely be made.

The committee will also discuss how much time members can debate the articles of impeachment.

The Rules Committee could vote on whether lawmakers can vote on articles individually or as a package.

And the members will decide if more amendments can be offered.

It was the amendment process that dragged on into the night Thursday, with GOP lawmakers pitching changes to the two articles.

But, because the party is in the minority, none of them stuck.

Android 10 is rolling out to Galaxy S10 phones on Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon - The Verge

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:33 PM PST

If you use a Samsung Galaxy S10 on Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon, you might be able to download Android 10 to your device right now.

9to5Google surfaced reports on Reddit earlier today that Android 10 was rolling out to Galaxy S10 phones in the US, so we asked each of the big four wireless carriers if they could tell us more about their plans for the rollout. They're the ones who have the final call to allow the software update to go through on these phones. Here's the state of the Android 10 rollout for Samsung Galaxy phones on each carrier.

  • AT&T: AT&T had no information to share.
  • Sprint: Sprint confirmed to The Verge that Android 10 is rolling out to the Galaxy S10 today and that Android 10 will roll out to the Note 10, Note 10 Plus, and S10 5G "soon."
  • T-Mobile: T-Mobile did not respond, but a support doc on the company's website says Android 10 was released to Galaxy S10 devices on December 15th.
  • Verizon: Verizon confirmed to The Verge that Android 10 is available for Galaxy S10 phones starting today, though you might have to check for the update in your settings to get it manually (which is advice that may apply to Sprint and T-Mobile customers as well).

And in another Reddit thread, users on Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile have been reporting throughout the day that they have the update.

For most Android releases, users on non-Google phones often have to wait for their carriers to bring the new Android software to their devices. 2018's Android Pie didn't arrive on Samsung devices until this past January, for example, so it's nice to see Android 10 arrive a month sooner than Android Pie did, by comparison. (Android 10 first rolled out for Google Pixel phones in the US in early September.)

In addition to the many new updates in Android 10, Samsung users will also get a refreshed version of its One UI, dubbed One UI 2. My colleague Dieter Bohn found the original One UI to be pretty good, and One UI 2 looks to have a lot small improvements to make things more consistent and efficient across the software:

After you install the update, head over to the gestures section of settings to see how they work now in Android 10 — and where you can tweak them a bit if you like. And as with any update, there's always the potential for bugs or UI weirdness, so if you're seeing something weird, check the question and bugs thread on the Galaxy S10 subreddit.

うれしいことに、フラッシュをたかなければスマホでの画像撮影や動画撮影、SNSにアップもOK(一眼レフカメラの持ち込みや、画像や動画の商用使用はNG)。

Trump on track to become third US president to be impeached

Republican Donald Trump is this week likely to become the third US president to be impeached when the Democratic-led House of Representatives votes on charges stemming from his effort to pressure Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden.

Trump faces one charge of abusing his power by asking Ukraine to investigate Biden, a leading Democratic contender to oppose him in the 2020 US presidential election, and one of obstructing Congress' investigation into the matter.

The president has denied wrongdoing and accused Democrats of a baseless and politically-motivated bid to oust him from power.

Trump has branded the entire impeachment drive a sham.

Nicky Morgan, who said before the election she was standing down as a member of Parliament and leaving politics, will stay on as culture secretary after she was hastily appointed to the unelected House of Lords, Johnson's office said Monday.

Other key positions in the Cabinet, including chancellor of the exchequer, home secretary and foreign secretary, are expected to remain unchanged.

McConnell announces run for 7th term after vowing to rig impeachment trial for Trump - The American Independent

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:37 PM PST

McConnell made his reelection bid official after saying that he will do whatever the White House wants in the impending impeachment trial against Donald Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed for reelection Friday for a seventh term, after he vowed to rig the impeachment trial for Donald Trump.

McConnell, the longest-serving U.S. senator in Kentucky history, has tied himself closely to Trump as he prepares to defend himself against a host of Democrats wanting to unseat him.

McConnell noted that among the four congressional leaders — the top-ranking Republican and Democratic leaders in both chambers — he's the only one from the U.S. heartland.

"What I do is look out for Middle America and, in particular, my favorite state in Middle America — Kentucky," McConnell told reporters at the state Capitol.

Talking about issues that hit home for Kentuckians, McConnell touted his role in making hemp a legal crop, saying the versatile plant might someday "be like tobacco used to be" as a staple for bluegrass state farmers. Kentucky has been at the national forefront of hemp's comeback among growers and processors.

The senator said he has steered hundreds of millions of federal dollars to Kentucky to help combat opioid abuse in a state plagued by drug problems.

McConnell also has been a key ally of Trump in putting conservative judges — some of them rated unqualified by the American Bar Association — on the federal bench.

McConnell has amassed a massive campaign fund, as has his highest-profile Democratic challenger, retired Marine combat pilot Amy McGrath, who narrowly lost a 2018 congressional race. As the top-ranking Republican in Congress, McConnell is a lightning rod for Democrats across the country who want to see him ousted from the Senate.

McGrath campaign spokesman Terry Sebastian cited Republican incumbent Matt Bevin's loss in this year's governor's race in his response to McConnell's reelection run.

"Kentuckians just fired Matt Bevin for trying to take away health care from thousands of people and Sen. McConnell is next. For 35 years, he has done nothing but sell out hard-working families for his own personal political interests, and just like our former governor, McConnell will be retired this election," Sebastian said in a statement.

McConnell downplayed the role Trump's impeachment could have in next year's elections.

"It seems like it may not play much of a role in the president's reelection campaign," McConnell told reporters. "There's considerable anecdotal evidence that in the battleground states, it's not going over very well. The two articles of impeachment are pretty weak."

McConnell later said that if impeachment isn't popular in swing states, then "it's probably not a popular move in Kentucky." Trump won Kentucky by a landslide in 2016 .

Asked if he thinks impeachment will be an issue by next fall, McConnell replied, "I would doubt it."

After speaking with reporters, McConnell stopped by the governor's office to chat for a few minutes with Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear, who ousted Bevin in last month's election.

IAG Japan

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:26 PM PST

Boeing will suspend 737 Max production in January - CNBC

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 04:37 PM PST

Boeing is planning to suspend production of its beleaguered 737 Max planes next month, the company said Monday, a drastic step after the Federal Aviation Administration said its review of the planes would continue into next year.

Boeing's decision, made after months of a cash-draining global grounding of its best-selling aircraft, worsens one of the most severe crises in the history of the century-old manufacturer.

The measure is set to ripple through the aerospace giant's supply chain and broader economy. It also presents further problems for airlines, which have lost hundreds of millions of dollars and canceled thousands of flights without the fuel-efficient planes in their fleets.

Boeing said it does not plan to lay off or furlough workers at the Renton, Washington, factory where the 737 Max is produced during the production pause. Some of the 12,000 workers there will be temporarily reassigned.

Boeing last week acknowledged that regulators' review of the planes — grounded since March after two crashes killed 346 people — would last until the following year, longer than the end-of-year approval the Chicago-based manufacturer was targeting.

Just how long Boeing will keep its 737 Max production line halted was not immediately clear, because it will depend on when regulators clear the plane to fly again. U.S. airlines have taken the planes out of their schedules until at least March. American last week said it doesn't expect to fly the planes before April.

"We know that the process of approving the 737 Max's return to service, and of determining appropriate training requirements, must be extraordinarily thorough and robust, to ensure that our regulators, customers, and the flying public have confidence in the 737 Max updates," Boeing said in a statement. "The FAA and global regulatory authorities determine the timeline for certification and return to service. We remain fully committed to supporting this process. It is our duty to ensure that every requirement is fulfilled, and every question from our regulators answered."

Boeing had repeatedly warned investors that it could further cut or suspend production of the planes altogether if the flight ban lasts longer than expected, as it has. Boeing slashed production by 20% in April to 42 a month after regulators ordered airlines to stop flying the planes.

Close to 400 Max planes were in global fleets when regulators grounded the planes in mid-March after two fatal crashes in a span of five months. Since then, Boeing has produced some 400 more of the jetliners, which are parked at its facilities in Washington state and elsewhere. The grounding, now in its 10th month, has prevented Boeing from delivering planes to customers, and the company said halting production would help it deliver the stored planes when the grounding is lifted.

Boeing shares, which fell more than 4% during the regular session, were down 1% in after-hours trading. Also on Monday, it declared a quarterly dividend, holding it steady at $2.055 a share.

Spirit AeroSystems, which makes fuselages for the 737 Max, was down more than 4% postmarket.

Smaller suppliers with smaller cash cushions are particularly vulnerable to the production pause, analysts said.

Hollywood Critics Association Names Kristen Stewart Actress of the Decade in the Same World Viola Davis Exists - The Root

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 04:35 PM PST

In a dystopian world where no other actress exists, Kristen Stewart has been named Actress of the Decade by the Hollywood Critics Association (HCA).

"We at the HCA are proud to announce that Kristen Stewart will receive the Actress of the Decade Award at our ceremony on January 9, 2020," The HCA tweeted from their official account on "Stewart's impressive filmography includes Seberg, Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria, The Runaways, and Charlie's Angels."

Notice how they didn't include her most notable claim to fame, Twilight. Because we, including the HCA, know damn well there's nothing "impressive" (or "filmography" for that matter) about that turn of events. Sure, Stewart went on to prove she could step away from the fanfare saga with more independent roles, but actress of the decade?! Come on.

Hmm. According to the HCA's official website:

The primary goal of the Hollywood Critics Association is to bring together a passionate group of critics to represent the voices of a new era in Hollywood. Our focus has always been to connect a diverse group of critics who capture the viewpoints of all backgrounds, not only in Hollywood but across the United States and abroad.

Diversity is incredibly important in film criticism and the HCA wants to make sure that all voices are represented within our group. In addition, we wanted to embrace critics who found new ways to criticize film whether that be through vlogs, webcasts, podcasts, or social media. New media is here to stay and so is the HCA.

Yeahhhh, I'm going to need the statistics of this "diverse" group to make sense of this. Hell, actually, it may be worse if a group rich with black critics and other critics of color all came together and picked Kristen when again, Viola Davis exists.

We're talking about the same Viola Davis who did the unthinkable and stole a scene from the Meryl Streep in Doubt. The same Viola Davis who is well on her way to becoming a working actor with EGOT status (why yes, she should win a Grammy for narrating an audiobook, have you listened to any of her award acceptance speeches ever in life?!)

The HCA was formerly known as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society (LAOFCS). After a much-deserved dragging by Black Twitter, perhaps it's time for yet another alias?

"This tweet proves the point that there are always multiple people who deserve an award," the HCA Twitter account responded to one of the many criticisms it received. "Lupita [Nyong'o] had 10 films, Margot [Robbie] had 17, Emma [Stone] had 18, Amy [Adams] had 16 and Kristen had 21. Each one of these actresses are incredibly talented and are all ideal candidates for this award. They will more than likely be awarded in future ceremonies."

So, wait, the criteria (another thing I'd love to know!) was based on the number of credits during this decade? In that case, Jenifer Lewis and Loretta Divine deserve a Lifetime Achievement Award from the HCA, right?

Anyway, I will not have this utter disrespect of the G.O.A.T. known as Viola Davis. I said I will not have it, oh!

"I don't know her," Viola's Snot Bubble, the acclaimed supporting actor, told The Root in response to the HCA's decision.

At the start of every new year, everyone's all, "New year, new me." If I were being more honest with myself, though, it'd be, "New year, same me but 10 pounds heavier." But I digress. Are you ready to set a goal and, you know, actually stick to it? Same. Fortunately, there are some science-backed ways of conquering your goals. Let's dive into them, with a little help from the experts along the way.

How to Achieve Your Goals, According to Science

1. Write. It. Down!

Mary Allen, CPCC, MCC, author of The Power of Inner Choice and life coach of more than 21 years, tells Parade.com, "You've heard it before, but by writing down your goals, you're 42 percent more likely to achieve them, according to a study at Dominican University in California. It'll force you to get clear, and take a stand for what you want."

According to Forbes, there are two main reasons why writing down your goals works: external storage and encoding. External storage simply means that we're taking a thought and putting it on a physical location, like a piece of paper. Plain and simple, we make things more of a priority when we're reminded of them every single day.

Encoding helps by sending messages to our brain and helping to decide what gets put in our long-term memory and what gets tossed away. When you write things down, your ability to encode them improves.

Allen also encourages us to think long-term: "Take it one step further by creating a year-long vision. To do this, imagine it's exactly one year from today, then write a letter to yourself in the past tense, as though you are reflecting on your accomplishments achieved in 2020. This simple strategy allows you to connect mentally and emotionally with your goals. Clients find themselves almost automatically taking inspired actions to fulfill goals."

Moral of the story? Have a journal, whiteboard, or even a scrap piece of paper where you write down your goals and really let them sink in—every single day.

2. Make Your Goals SMART

"If your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and within a set time-frame, the odds of you actually accomplishing them go up," says Sami Main, a certified life coach and published author. "Setting goals works best when people can be as specific, and realistic, as possible. A lot of times, folks set too high of a standard for themselves and they get set up for failure instead of success."

You won't often hear people tell you to set the bar low, but when it comes to goals, smaller, more manageable ones might be the ticket. Hitting these mini-goals keeps you motivated and gives you an incentive to continue. And incentives can be everything. In fact, research has found that workplace incentive programs can boost performance by anywhere from 25 to 44 percent. Create a sort of incentive program for yourself, and you're on your way to success.

Being able to measure your goal is a biggie, too. It's not enough to say you want to lose weight (if that's your goal). You can't measure "lose weight." How many pounds do you want to lose? That's something that you can measure.

3. Determine Where You Are Stuck

"Find the hole in your tire," says Erica Diamond, certified life coach, weekly TV correspondent, author, speaker, and founder of the award-winning women's empowerment brand WomenOnTheFence.com. "First, think about your current state: Always looking forward to Friday? Can't seem to find your mojo? Free time still feel unmotivating? Even though you know you should make a change, it feels more comforting to stay where you are? ANSWER YES? That's ok. Self-awareness is first."

Let's say you have a goal to consistently get eight hours of sleep a night. But every time you get in bed, your mind is wired. Why? Where are you getting stuck?

Related: See You Later, 2019! Ring in 2020 with 100 of the Best New Year's Quotes

You then realize that you stop working immediately before going to bed, and that's the problem. Thus, your new goal might become to stop working at least one hour before bedtime.

4. Free Yourself to Focus

"In today's world, distraction is the enemy of success," adds Allen. "Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, found that the typical office worker is interrupted or switches tasks, on average, every three minutes and five seconds. We have email, text, social media, pop-up alerts, phone calls, employees, co-workers, and bosses who are interrupting our workflow. Roughly half of these are self-interruptions. So, if you're a stay-at-home mom or you work at home, these statistics apply to you too. It takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to get back where they left off. If you want to achieve your goals in 2020, concentrated focus is key.

Easier said than done? Probably. Thankfully, Allen also offers some actionable tips. "Challenge yourself to carve out at least two hours of distraction-free time a day. That means turning off your smartphone, closing email, and shutting off the TV. If at work, buy a pair of noise-canceling headphones to signal to others you're concentrating. Resist the urge to multi-task. Two hours a day equals 104 hours a year. That's enough time to write an entire book, work out to support weight loss, create a new product or business, or more."

5. Break Your Goal Up Into Bite-Sized, Doable Steps

Main reminds us to tackle baby steps instead of one overwhelming goal. "For example, you don't set a goal to run a marathon and then run one the very next day. You need to research, develop, and implement a training routine that works for you … Action steps help people make their big goals feel more doable because the steps are small and methodical."

Look at it as creating mini-goals that will help you reach your main goal. If you want to write a book, you might break this up into mini-goals like:

  • Draft three pages a day.
  • Write 500 words a day.
  • Write for 45 minutes uninterrupted each day.

These are much easier to digest and manage than "write a book."

6. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone More Often

"Getting off the fence and getting unstuck is about self-esteem," explains Diamond. "The more you go outside your comfort zone, the more you challenge yourself to be uncomfortable, the more you build your self-esteem and resilience muscle. The more resilient you are, the more confident you become in your decision-making and moving forward."

7. Hire a Coach

Allen reminds us that it's perfectly acceptable to ask for help. "Athletes have coaches to bring out their best. Nowadays, so do executives, business owners, professionals, and even stay-at-home moms. Approximately 500,000 people rely on coaches to help them set and achieve their goals faster by taking strategic action, holding them accountable, addressing obstacles, and creating a powerful mindset. To put it simply, a coach helps you maximize your professional and personal potential."

Really and truly, it's no different than having a personal trainer for the gym. A word of warning, though: "The coaching field is unregulated. No license is required. Consequently, anyone can call themselves a coach. Look for an ICF credentialed coach, ACC, PCC, or MCC. The highest level of accreditation is the Master Certified Coach (MCC) with the ICF. That means they've coached at minimum 2,500 hours. For you, it means accelerating your results in less time."

Main echos a similar sentiment, saying, "People can also set up an accountability system. This is usually why folks seek out life coaches, to have a person who isn't their significant other or a close family member help hold them accountable for the goals and action steps they've set out to do. It helps to have someone to check in with about your progress. For example, if you tell someone you're going to read three books this month, they're now expecting to hear about those books in a few weeks. You can even ask them to set a reminder to check in with you about that goal."

8. Replace Old Habits With Better Ones

"If your goal is to change a habit, you're not alone. But it can be really difficult to change a habit 'overnight' or 'cold turkey.' Real, lasting change takes time and repetition to really sink in," explains Main.

Let's look at smoking, for instance. Research says that out of 100 people who try to quit cold turkey, at least 95 percent of them fail. Why? Simple. They're trying to completely remove something from their life, and it's abrupt and overwhelming.

Here's what Main suggests we do instead:

"One way to make it easier is to replace the habit you want to stop doing with something else. Instead of feeling like there's a void or something missing, you'll have a different action ready to go instead. For example, let's say you want to stop biting your nails. If you can dig a little deeper and figure out why you're biting your nails (i.e. are you anxious? are you bored? are you thinking through a problem?), you can figure out a replacement habit instead (i.e. reach out to a friend to talk about how you're feeling; use those minutes to catch up on emails or another task; grab a notebook to write out the problem you're trying to find a solution to). Everyone has different reasons for their habits, so figuring out what's behind your own can help you replace it with one that makes you feel better."

Forget piggy banks. Kids are using mobile apps for pocket money - CNN

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:33 AM PST

To reflect this trend, a flurry of mobile budgeting apps for children has sprung up worldwide: GoHenry, Osper and Gimi to name a few.
These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly subscription fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children's accounts, set limits and monitor transactions, while children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card that works like a debit card. The apps suggest minimum ages ranging from six to nine for the prepaid card.
Set to join the pocket money market is the digital bank Revolut, with its upcoming launch of Revolut Youth for seven to 18-year-olds. Parents who are already Revolut customers will be able to add their children to their account as secondary users, each with their own personal debit card. Parents can monitor the child's account through their existing app, while kids can download their own child-friendly version. Initial testing has begun, with the dedicated app for kids expected to become available in the United Kingdom in the first quarter of 2020.

Spend responsibly

The companies behind the apps argue that in an increasingly cashless society, they can be a valuable way of teaching young children about money.
Two thirds of adults globally are financially illiterate, according to Standard & Poor's Global Financial Literacy Survey, and one in four teenagers are unable to make even simple decisions on everyday spending.
These apps aim to overcome this, claiming to teach children financial concepts, such as budgeting, interest rates and income.
For instance, the Swedish app Gimi -— with 1.2 million users globally — has virtual savings jars where children can deposit money; parents can pay children interest as they save; and there is a chores feature, where parents can pay children for completing household tasks.
The account is attached to a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but expected to launch elsewhere in Europe in 2020.
Gimi, a pocket money app for kids, helps children to grasp complicated financial concepts such as interest rates
"Cash was the best way to teach financial literacy because it's so tangible and so easy to grasp," Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, tells CNN Business. "Now money is being transferred through some kind of cyberspace, which is really abstract and hard for anyone to understand."
Haglund believes the app can teach responsible spending habits, whereas schools tend to focus more on economic theory.
"You don't become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It's more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents' money when you're six to 12 years old," he says.
But Catherine Winter, managing director of financial capability at The London Institute of Banking and Finance, warns that while digital tools can help there needs to be a more structured approach to financial education.
The area should "have regular, dedicated, classroom time and ideally should be taught as a standalone subject," she said. "Children would then have the right context and foundation to get the most out of both the apps and their money."

A lucrative generation

The growth of digital banking has affected how parents doll out pocket money, with one in three parents in the United Kingdom doing it digitally, according to a recent report by the financial comparison website Money.co.uk.
As a whole, kids aged 13-19, are estimated to contribute £1.7 billion ($2.2 billion) into the UK economy each year, according to the Teenage Finance Report from financial services providers OneFamily.
"There's a big opportunity," Aurelian Guichard, the product owner for Revolut Youth, tells CNN Business.
"We have an app for adults ... so we will be able to build a transition from being a Revolut Youth user to becoming a normal user."
This could translate to customers for life, as according to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority only 3% of personal customers switch to a different bank in any year.

Encouraging spending or debt?

One concern is that introducing digital money apps to young children could help to encourage irresponsible spending habits.
"If children don't have a good foundation in financial capability, there's a risk that money apps could be seen as just another game," says Winter. "There's a risk that they won't learn about the real value of money and might develop bad money habits."
However, Haglund says children are protected from this as parents can monitor their spending habits and none of the services offer an overdraft so children cannot go into debt.
Plus, it is important for kids to learn and make mistakes, says Guichard.
"We want to help kids and teenagers gain financial skills for life, and the earlier you do that the better, because if you're going to make a mistake of £10 at eight, it's better than making a mistake of £1,000 when you're when you're 28," he says.

How Mobile Apps Are Lowering Drug Prices For Consumers - pymnts.com

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:33 AM PST

Winter hasn't officially started in the Northern Hemisphere, but it's cold and dreary enough in many places, and that means all those fun winter bugs are doing their jobs and making people ill. It also means that pharmacies — whether brick-and-mortar or online — are popular places, perhaps even part of a weekend to-do list that includes holiday retail shopping.

PYMNTS certainly hopes you are in good health, but if you are or have been sick, that your medication didn't cost too much, and that the process of buying it involved the least amount of friction possible. In fact, to get a better grip on the changes going on with medication retail purchases, and how the latest technology is indeed working on those friction and cost problems, PYMNTS recently caught up with Ramzi Yacoub, chief pharmacy officer for RxSense, the parent company of SingleCare — a digital and mobile service that enables consumers to compare pharmacy prices and receive discounts and retail offers.

"With healthcare the way it is, with high-deductible plans, and prices on the rise," Yacoub told PYMNTS, "we see significant opportunities in the drug discount space."

Rising Costs

Recent research supports that point. As PYMNTS has covered, the average U.S. family pays $20,000 a year in healthcare costs. That is sparking innovation and attempts at disruption in all parts of the massive healthcare industry, with its legacy systems and processes in many areas, along with its inherent complexity, presenting formidable obstacles to change.

However, as Yacoub explained, the rapid, ongoing shift to consumer use of digital and mobile technologies offers a "unique opportunity, from the tech perspective," for change. "Apps and mobile phones are one of the quickest ways to get information out of the patient," he said. "You can easily pull up the nearest pharmacy, and see what the cost will be."

That is, indeed, the ideal, as practiced by SingleCare. It functions similar to a medical discount card program (not insurance), and enables those price comparisons and access to discounts, often via the company's partnerships with retail drug providers, including some of the country's biggest chains.

That's not all, either. Via a mobile and digital feature, such as Drug Basket (newly launched, Yacoub noted, so he wasn't able to give meaningful metrics on performance just yet), consumers can enter all their medications and determine which pharmacy offers the best overall value. No one likes to drive to different pharmacies, after all. According to the Mayo Clinic, 20 percent of U.S. consumers take five or more medications, while more than 50 percent take at least two.

"Consumers are able to see where the best opportunity is," Yacoub said.

Larger Trends

That is certainly one possibility for innovation and disruption in the retail pharmacy space. Yet, as SingleCare seeks more data about the popularity and efficiency of Drug Basket, much more activity is going on in this increasingly competitive space. Amazon, of course, is trying to build out its medicine delivery service (among other healthcare initiatives from the eCommerce and logistics giant), while chains such as CVS, Walgreens and Walmart beef up their appeal via more health services at their pharmacies.

Kroger, meanwhile, launched its Rx Savings Club, which aims to significantly reduce the cost of prescription drugs for customers across the country. The program adds to the retailer's Wellness Your Way platform, and was developed in partnership with GoodRx. Through the club, customers have access to discounts on commonly prescribed, generic medications for widespread conditions in the U.S., including diabetes, asthma, mental health issues, women's health concerns, gastrointestinal health and heart health. The program provides up to 85 percent savings on thousands of prescriptions.

For SingleCare, its key future endeavors in innovation and disruption rely heavily on data and analysis. That part of the business is so important, in fact, that instead of farming those tasks out to a third-party vendor, the company has its own in-house analytics shop, Yacoub noted.

"We can do it in real time," he said. Of course, he added, it helps that SingleCare is operated by a pharmacy-focused company, and that the executives have ample pharmacy and healthcare experience.

How much of an advantage that will prove to be is not yet clear, but it does show the ways to do disruption and innovation in this space. With an aging population, and healthcare costs on the rise, one can bet that there will be ample innovation to come.

India police storm Jamia, AMU to break citizenship law protests - Al Jazeera English

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:07 AM PST

More than 100 students have been injured in India after baton-wielding police charged at them and fired tear gas at two federally-run universities where students were holding anti-citizenship law protests.

Students in capital New Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Uttar Pradesh state's Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) had been protesting since the new law was passed last week.

The contentious law grants citizenship to religious minorities - Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians - from neighbouring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, a provision critics say violates India's secular constitution.

More:

In South Delhi on Sunday, residents joined the JMI students as they tried to march towards Parliament to protest the exclusion of Muslims from the citizenship law.

Clashes erupted after police tried to disperse the demonstrators as they reached the Sarai Julena area near the university campus, with buses and private vehicles set on fire.

The police then stormed the JMI and fired tear gas into some classrooms. Indian media reports said students praying at a mosque were also attacked.

Nearly 100 students were detained following the violence, although university authorities said the students did not take part in the burning of vehicles.

"The police have entered the campus by force, no permission was given," said JMI's Chief Proctor Waseem Ahmed. "Our staff and students are being beaten up and forced to leave the campus," he told ANI news agency.

JMI Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar also backed the students, saying she was "hurt by the way my students were treated".

The detained students were released in the early hours of Monday after hundreds of activists and students from other New Delhi universities protested in front of the Delhi Police headquarters.

Solidarity protests were also reported from university campuses across the country in the wake of the police action.

Police entered library

Mohmmad Minhaj Uddin, a law student at the JMI, told Al Jazeera he sustained an injury to his eye after being beaten by the police.

"I don't know why I was beaten up. I wasn't even protesting. I was in the university library when police entered the campus," the 26-year-old told Al Jazeera.

"They broke the lock of the library gate and entered inside and beat everyone who came in their way," he said. "In panic, I fell on to the ground. They hit me on the eye."

Mohammad was rushed to al-Shifa Hospital in Jamia Nagar, where he received treatment.

A video showing police beating a group of students was widely shared on social media, while another video showing students walking with their hands raised caused outrage.

Officials at al-Shifa and Holy Family hospitals said more than 100 people with injuries were brought in following the clashes.

Delhi Police defended the police's action. "About 4,000 people were protesting and police did what they did to disperse them when the crowd burned buses," said Chinmoy Biswal, a senior police officer in the area. "If it had been a peaceful mob, it would have been dispersed peacefully."

He added that police entered the campus to maintain order and that six officers were wounded in the clashes.

Local authorities ordered all the schools around the JMI in the capital to remain closed on Monday. JMI had already announced on Saturday that it was closing early for the winter break.

Tension on AMU campus

Similar scenes erupted at AMU campus, about 130km (about 81 miles) away from the capital in Uttar Pradesh state, where police used tear gas and attacked students with sticks.

Thousands of students at the AMU, India's largest minority institution, had been protesting against the citizenship law at the main entrance of the university.

On Sunday, while they were gathered at the entrance, dozens of police officers entered the campus and attacked the students with batons, firing tear gas.

Media reports said Aligarh district authorities have ordered the closure of the university.

Muslims groups, opposition parties and rights activists in India say the new citizenship law is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist agenda to marginalise India's 200 million Muslims.

Modi, speaking at a rally in the eastern state of Jharkhand on Sunday, accused the opposition Congress party of inciting violence.

"Those who are spreading violence can be identified by their clothes," he said.

The Congress party, in turn, slammed Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying the government "has failed at its duty to maintain peace in the nation".

Sunday was the fifth straight day of protests in India against the citizenship law, with at least six people killed in the northeastern state of Assam.

People in the state, which has historically seen protests against undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants, fear the new law will encourage more immigrants to settle in the region.

Authorities have shut down the internet in several parts of the affected states in an attempt to maintain law and order.

Model and actor Payal Rohatgi was detained by Rajasthan Police from her Ahmedabad residence on Sunday allegedly for her comment on former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. "Payal Rohatgi has been detained. Case registered," said SP Mamta Gupta. According to sources, a police team led by an Inspector rank official has detained her. She is likely to be produced in Court on Monday. "I am arrested by @PoliceRajasthan for making a video on #MotilalNehru which I made from taking information from @google Freedom of Speech is a joke @PMOIndia @HMOIndia," tweeted Payal Rohatgi.

Earlier in December, a notice was served to the actor for allegedly posting an objectionable video relating to former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. "Rajasthan Youth Congress general secretary Charmesh Sharma has filed a complaint stating Payal Rohtagi has posted an objectionable video about JL Nehru, Indira Gandhi on Facebook on September 1. During the investigation, our team reached her residence in Mumbai. Later, we met Rohtagi at her parent's home in Gujarat. We have given her the notice to file a reply in the case," Lokendra Paliwal, Investigating Officer, Sadar Police Station, Bundi had told ANI. The complaint was filed by Sharma in October at Bundi Sadar police station, following which the police registered a case under 66 and 67 of the IT Act. Rohtagi had also posted a video on the social media apologising over the matter.
