Here's an early look at the Galaxy Note 10 Lite - Tom's Guide Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:37 PM PST ![]() A Lite version of the Galaxy Note 10 may be hitting the market shortly, and now we have a pretty good idea of what it's going to look like, should it arrive before year's end. WinFuture.de posted what it described as official renders of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, a scaled-back version of Samsung's phablet that's expected to ship before the end of the year. We've been hearing Galaxy Note 10 Lite rumors since earlier this fall, but this is the first official-looking glimpse we've had of the rumored phone. (Previous renders weren't as detailed and were likely based on device specs.) The new leaked images show off a phone that looks an awful lot like the Galaxy Note 10 itself, only with a slightly wider, flatter display. That punch-hole cutout for the front camera remains in the upper center of the display, but flip around the Note 10 Lite, and you'll see a big difference from the rest of the Note 10 lineup. WinFuture.de's renders show off a phone with a rectangular camera bump in the upper left corner that houses three camera lenses. Presumably, these are the main camera, wide angle lens and telephoto shooter similar to the cameras on the regular Note 10. It's essentially the same camera array design featured on the iPhone 11 Pro and Pixel 4, and a departure from the vertical strip of cameras adorning the back of the Note 10. Samsung appears to be moving to this style of camera array, at least if you go by leaked renders. The latest renders for the Galaxy S11, due out early next year, show a similar array to what we're seeing for the rumored Note 10 Lite. We know very little about this rumored phone other than the speculation that the Note 10 Lite is allegedly coming out before the end of the year, and that it sounds similar to the Galaxy S10e, which provided a less expensive version of the Galaxy S10 by scaling back on a few features. To that end, WinFuture.de's report claims that the Note 10 Lite will run on the Snapdragon 855 and repeats a widely reported rumor that the new phone will return the headphone jack to Samsung's phablet. WinFuture places the cost of the phone at around €670, which is €270 less than the Note 10's €949 asking price in Europe at the moment. It's unclear if Samsung will bring the phone to the U.S. This latest Note 10 Lite reports comes just after Samsung's own support pages seemingly confirmed the existence of this model. Peloton actress Monica Ruiz to guest star on ‘The Bold and the Beautiful' - Fox News Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:35 PM PST ![]() Peloton holiday ad sparks 'sexist' outcry: Will it hurt the company in the long run?Home-fitness company Peloton faced heavy social media backlash for their holiday ad promoting its exercise bike. Commenters blasted the promotional video as 'sexist' and mocked its message. Marketing expert and founder of CMO Inc., Peter Horst, shares some insight on how Peloton can bounce back from such a public shaming and what the long term impact on the company might be. Actress Monica Ruiz got quite a career boost after starring in the controversial Peloton ad. Ruiz starred in a commercial for the exercise-equipment company that many online critics slammed as sexist and "a symbol of patriarchy" over the suggestion of a husband gifting his wife an exercise bike. Since then, Ruiz booked a gig with Ryan Reynolds' Aviation Gin, and will now appear in the daytime soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful," Fox News can confirm. KIM KARDASHIAN HAD TO EDIT ONE OF HER KIDS INTO A FAMILY PHOTO AGAIN According to Yahoo Entertainment, Ruiz is set to appear in two episodes of the show, airing on Jan. 29 and 30. The outlet noted that her role is "top secret" for the time being. In January, the soap also booked Kelleth Cuthbert, who went viral after handing out Fiji water at the Golden Globes, for a guest spot on the show. "The Bold and the Beautiful" has been on air for over 30 years and become the most-watched daytime drama in the world. In Aviation Gin's newest ad, Ruiz can be seen staring into space sadly at a bar with friends who tell her, "You're safe here," before toasting "to new beginnings." Hands-On With Apple's New 2019 Mac Pro - MacRumors Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:37 PM PST ![]() We picked up a base model Mac Pro and in our latest YouTube video, we unbox it and share some initial first impressions. The Mac Pro arrives in an absolutely massive box weighing over 85 pounds, so getting it out of the packaging is no simple task. There are tabs, lids, velcro straps, and more to contend with, ensuring the machine is secure in its packaging. Even out of the packaging, the Mac Pro is a heavy duty machine made from quality components, and that "cheese grater" design looks great in person. In reality, the lattice look is functional and meant to maximize airflow for quiet performance. We have the base model Mac Pro, priced at $5,999, with an 8-core 3.5GHz Xeon W processor from Intel, 32GB RAM, a Radeon Pro 580X GPU, and 256GB of SSD storage. We didn't opt for upgrades, but you can add everything from a 28-core processor to 1.5TB of RAM to 4TB of storage (soon to be 8TB), with a maxed out machine costing upwards of $52,000. Luckily, this is a machine designed to be highly upgradeable, so most of the components can be swapped out later. iFixit gave the Mac Pro a repairability score of 9/10, and said it was a "masterclass in repairability," which is definitely a first for an Apple product. We can swap out the GPU, add RAM, and take advantage of the eight PCIe slots, though upgrading the SSD will require Apple's assistance because they're tied to the machine's T2 security chip. We're going to be upgrading the RAM in our machine quite soon, so make sure to keep an eye out for that video. Taking the casing off of the Mac Pro is a bit difficult because it's a tight fit and again, it's heavy, but once the casing has been removed, all of the internal components are easily accessible. There are both single wide and double wide PCIe slots, with the half-length slot preconfigured with Apple's I/O card. The I/O card features a 3.5mm headphone jack, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and two USB-A ports. There are also two HDMI ports, a spot for the power supply, and two 10GB Ethernet ports. You'll find two additional Thunderbolt 3 ports at the top of the tower near the power button. Going back to that lattice design, the Mac Pro is indeed as quiet as Apple promised. There are three fans on one side to optimize airflow, and the housing has been designed to act as a tight seal with internal ducts to maximize the thermal capacity. The Mac Pro comes with a nice braided power cable, a Lightning to USB cable with the same braided design, nifty black Apple stickers, and a high-quality instruction manual. It also ships with a silver and space gray aluminum Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard, which is a design unique to the new Mac Pro. The Mac Pro is an impressively built machine, and we're excited to put it through its paces and see what it can do. Stay tuned to MacRumors for more Mac Pro coverage, and let us know what you think of Apple's new machine. Anthony Cirelli’s overtime goal leads Lightning past Senators - Tampa Bay Times Posted: 17 Dec 2019 10:04 PM PST TAMPA — Anthony Cirelli was afraid to celebrate at first. After he ran to the goaltender on his overtime goal, Cirelli wanted to make sure the goal stood before he got too excited. The center had a couple of goals called back recently for goaltender interference. This time, however, the puck crossed the line before Cirelli reached the goalie. Good goal. Lightning win. "Still managed to hit the goalie but luckily this one went in," Cirelli said after Tuesday's 4-3 overtime win over Ottawa. "Once the guys jumped on the ice it was a lot of fun and huge that we got the two points." His running into a goalie and nullifying a goal has become something of a running joke in the Lightning's dressing room. Brayden Point, who assisted the goal, had a small chirp for his friend: "He crashing into the net quite a bit on his breakaways, but this time he was able to get the puck in first." On the other two would-be goals against Buffalo and Minnesota, Cirelli made contact with the goalies before the puck crossed the goal line. Maybe the puck would have gone in, but he pushed the goalies' pads and that made extra space. On Tuesday, Cirelli elevated the puck and didn't hit Marcus Hobgerg until after it crossed the line. "We're like 'try to shoot it before you get to the blue paint,'" coach Jon Cooper said. "I don't know if he did on this one either. (Just barely) But it worked out for us this time." Cooper appreciated Cirelli's burst of energy and speed on the play. He created a turnover deep in the Lightning's own zone, almost at the hashmark, then beat both of the Senators ahead of him. And that's in the game's 64th minute, having played three minutes more than his average. "That's what you get going to get out of him, since the day he joined this team," Cooper said. Gallery Photos: Lightning beat Senators 4-3 in overtime Cirelli has been rounding out the offensive side of his strong defensive game. In 31 games, he has 22 points, more than half of his total in 82 games last year. Part of that comes from playing in more offensive situations. Cirelli has moved from third to second line and is now playing with Steven Stamkos. Both halves of that statement scream offense. The Lightning needed that offensive production on Tuesday. They created chances throughout the night with 40 shots but couldn't put Ottawa away until the end. The team pressed for goals when it needed to protect the lead, an old problem resurfacing. The Lightning gave up a goal to Connor Brown 29 seconds after Point scored in the second period. Nikita Kucherov turned the puck over while cycling later in the period, which turned into a goal for Anthony Duclair to tie the game. They recovered by pressuring in the third period, including a big four-minute penalty kill. This time, they didn't let the game get away from them as they have in the past. But the Lightning still let it become a question. "We wanted to make sure you don't let one loss turn into two," Kevin Shattenkirk said about Saturday's loss to Washington. "We did a really good job in the third period, after we let them back into the game." The overtime went both ways, but the Lightning outshot the Senators 5-2. That's where Cirelli came in. "We need points," Cooper said. "Is it too early to look at the standings? Probably, but you look in the corner of your eye." The Atlantic Division is so tight that with the win, the Lightning jumped from sixth to fourth. They still have three games in hand on each team above them, but would have to win for them to mean anything. Contact Diana C. Nearhos at dnearhos@tampabay.com. Follow @dianacnearhos. 'Perversion', 'cover up': The eve of the Trump impeachment vote - Al Jazeera English Posted: 17 Dec 2019 09:37 PM PST Washington, DC - The eve of the US House of Representatives votes on whether to impeach President Donald Trump was full of name-calling, divisive rhetoric and fighting over next steps. Trump faces a near-certain impeachment on Wednesday on charges he abused power and obstructed Congress over his dealings with Ukraine. More:The impeachment process has deepened political divides in the United States as the country heads for the 2020 presidential election. Trump on Tuesday sent a sharply worded letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House, expressing his "strongest and most powerful protest" against impeachment. He said he was innocent of all the charges, and if Democrats proceeded they would be "declaring open war on American democracy". "I have no doubt the American people will hold you and the Democrats fully responsible in the upcoming 2020 election," Trump said. "They will not soon forgive your perversion of justice and abuse of power." The letter, which Trump said he did not expect to change anything but was for the "purpose of history", came as Republicans and Democrats fought over the rules of debate for Wednesday's expected impeachment votes. The House will debate and vote on two articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Pelosi called the letter "sick". She also wrote her own letter, urging her colleagues to "support and defend our constitutions from all enemies, foreign and domestic". "Tomorrow the House of Representatives will exercise one of the most solemn powers granted to us by the Constitution as we vote to approve two articles of impeachment against the president of the United States," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a letter to fellow Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday. "During this very prayerful moment in our nation's history, we must honor our oath to support and defend our constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic," she added. Wednesday's proceedings will kick off at 9am (14:00GMT) with debate on the rule governing the longer impeachment debate. After the rule is approved, there will then be six hours of debate, divided equally among Democrats and Republicans. A final vote is expected in the afternoon or early evening on Wedneday. Trump's Ukraine dealingsDemocrats accuse Trump of pressuring Ukraine to open an investigation the president's political rival and former vice president, Joe Biden, who is also a frontrunner in the 2020 Democratic presidential race. They also charge that the president obstructed their investigation by refusing to comply with subpoenas and directing members of his administration to do the same. The impeachment inquiry, launched in September following a whistle-blower complaint, was centred on a July 25 phone call during which Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to open an investigation into Biden and his son, Hunter, who had served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. There has been no evidence of wrongdoing by the Bidens. Trump also wanted Zelenskyy to investigate a debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 US presidential election. At the time of the call, the Trump administration was withholding nearly $400m in Congress-approved military assistance from Ukraine. Citing testimony by current and former US officials, Democrats also accuse Trump of leveraging a White House meeting that Zelenskyy wanted in exchange for the investigations. Wednesday's vote comes after more than two months of investigation in the House, including hours of testimony, hundreds of pages of reports by Democrats making their case for impeachment, dozens of witnesses and repeated denials of wrongdoing by the president. Impeachment in the 435-member House must be approved with a simple majority. The House votes are expected to play out largely along party lines. Some Democrats who are up for re-election in districts Trump won in 2016 have yet to announce how they will vote, but impeachment is expected. If Trump is impeached, the articles of impeachment will then be sent to the Senate for a trial. Top Senators trade jabsAs for what a trial would look like remained a point of contention for Republicans and Democrats, who traded barbs on Tuesday over the next steps. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the trial will be senators' "first order of business" when they return to Washington, DC, in January. He has indicated he would like a swift trial, but Democrats have requested at least four additional witnesses be heard, including acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and former Trump National Security Adviser John Bolton. McConnell on Tuesday appeared to reject that request, taking aim at the top Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer. "So, now the Senate Democratic leader would apparently like our chamber to do House Democrats' homework for them," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "And he wants to volunteer the Senate's time and energy on a fishing expedition to see whether his own ideas could make [House Intelligence] Chairman's [Adam] Schiff's sloppy work more persuasive than Chairman Schiff himself bothered to make it," he added. "From everything we can tell, House Democrats' slapdash impeachment inquiry has failed to come anywhere near - anywhere near - the bar for impeaching a duly elected president, let alone removing him for the first time in American history." But Schumer hit back, accusing McConnell of wanting to use the Senate to help "cover something up". "What is Leader McConnell afraid of? What is President Trump afraid of? The truth?" Schumer asked on the Senate floor. "If you're trying to conceal evidence and block testimony, it's probably not because the evidence is going to help your case. It's because you're trying to cover something up," Schumer added. McConnell later reportedly said he feels "optimistic" that Republicans and Democrats can agree on a "phase one" of the trial, which would include the presentation of the case and defence. "We'll see at that point whether there are 51 members of the Senate who want to take one of two directions - either going in the direction of witnesses or going in the direction of voting on the articles of impeachment," he was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying. A two-thirds majority vote is required in the 100-member Senate to convict and remove a president from office. The Senate is made up of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who caucus with the Democrats. At least 20 Republicans would have to vote with all Democrats and the two independents to remove the president. No US president has ever been removed from office via the impeachment process laid out in the Constitution. Only two presidents - Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 - have been impeached. Five key Clasico questions - MARCA.com Posted: 17 Dec 2019 09:07 PM PST ![]() There are many factors that can decide any Clasico, from magical moments from special players to tactical manoeuvres that can change the course of a game. Wednesday's matchup between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be no different and it may well be influenced by any of the following factors. Casemiro will return in holding midfield for Real Madrid, which gives Fede Valverde a licence to roam around the rest of the pitch. It's unknown which role Zinedine Zidane will give the Uruguayan at the Camp Nou, but he might be persuaded to use the youngster to keep tabs on Lionel Messi. Zidane has used Mateo Kovacic in that role before and the Croatian did well until one mistake cost his team. However, Zidane's trust in Valverde is total and he could assign him to do the job. Every Clasico in the last decade has followed a similar pattern as Barcelona have had more of the ball than Real Madrid, and this season's statistics suggest that history could repeat itself on Wednesday. The Catalan side have had the highest average possession with 64.1 percent, while Los Blancos sit on an average of 58.5 percent. On the other hand, Real Madrid have seen much more of the ball in recent weeks and it has brought them results. Meanwhile, Barcelona are showing they're capable of playing differently to the tactics that Pep Guardiola installed. Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique have been the staples of their teams' respective defences over the past decade, but that doesn't prevent criticism coming their way. Their performances are under the microscope, although their teammates aren't innocent either. There's no room for mistakes in a Clasico and a major error could cost someone the game. Both coaches will enjoy pitting their wits in this tactical battle as they look to gain an advantage on each other. They will use players like Antoine Griezmann or Isco to destabilise the opposition and to pick the locks of their defences. Griezmann could play on the shoulders of Casemiro or Dani Carvajal, breaking between the lines to good effect. For the visitors, Isco could do the same job, creating confusion amongst Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Busquets. The Clasicos of the next decade will feature the likes of Ansu Fati, Rodrygo and Vinicius, but one of them could spring a youthful surprise and decide the final matchup of the 2010s. They're all expected to start on the bench, but they'll all hope to make a difference at some point during the encounter. Trump impeachment letter: What Trump sent Nancy Pelosi - Vox.com Posted: 17 Dec 2019 08:07 PM PST ![]() President Donald Trump seems angry. On Tuesday, the eve of the House's historic impeachment vote, the president sent a rambling, exclamation point-laden letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in which he rages at her and House Democrats, accusing them of pursuing an "invalid" and partisan impeachment inquiry against him. The six-page letter reads a bit like a compilation of Trump's greatest Twitter hits. "The Articles of Impeachment introduced by the House Judiciary Committee are not recognizable under any standard of Constitutional theory, interpretation or jurisprudence," Trump writes. "They include no crimes, no misdemeanors, no offenses whatsoever. You have cheapened the importance of the very ugly word, impeachment!" More than 700 historians and legal scholars have written to the House in support of impeachment, and three of the four law professors who appeared before the House Judiciary Committee testified that Trump's attempts to pressure Ukraine to investigate his 2020 political rival rose to the level of impeachment. Yet Trump, who we should note is not a constitutional scholar, asserts that House Democrats are breaking their allegiance to the Constitution and "declaring open war on American Democracy." "You dare to invoke the Founding Fathers in pursuit of this election-nullification scheme — yet your spiteful actions display unfettered contempt for America's founding and your egregious conduct threatens to destroy that which our Founders pledged their lives to build," the president writes. Trump goes on to address both articles of impeachment against him: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. In defending himself against abuse of power — specifically, withholding military aid and a White House meeting to pressure Ukraine to open investigations into the Bidens — he again claims his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was "totally innocent" and "perfect" and that the conversation "has been misquoted, mischaracterized, and fraudulently misrepresented." "I said to President Zelensky: 'I would like you to do us a favor, though, because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it.' I said do us a favor, not me, and our country, not a campaign." (The words "us," "me," and "our country" are all underlined in the letter.) Of course, Trump is himself mischaracterizing the actual conversation he had with Zelensky by leaving out the part of the White House's readout of the call where he asks Zelensky to "look into" the false allegation that Joe Biden, as vice president, got a Ukrainian prosecutor fired to thwart his investigation into Burisma, the Ukrainian gas company Biden's son Hunter served on the board of. In reality, Biden pushed for that prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, to be fired because he wasn't doing enough to investigate corruption in Ukraine. And it wasn't Biden's idea — it was an official Obama administration policy decision that was supported by several of America's Western allies. Nevertheless, Trump repeats these (again, false) allegations against Biden in his letter. Trump also cites Zelensky's statements that he did not feel pressured by the US president. That's true: Zelensky has, in fact, said this — something that Republicans have repeatedly cited as proof Trump did nothing wrong. Democrats, on the other hand, argue Zelensky is only saying this because he and his country are still reliant on US aid to fend off Russia and don't want to go against Trump publicly. On the obstruction of Congress charge, which he calls "preposterous and dangerous," Trump argues he was merely "asserting Constitutionally based privileges that have been asserted on a bipartisan basis by administrations of both political parties throughout our Nation's history" — though he fails to specifically mention that his administration has blocked subpoenas and document requests by the House. There's more in the letter — oh, so much more. But all of it is stuff Trump has previously said over and over at rallies, on Twitter, and anywhere else he happens to be. He accuses Democrats of both trying to undo the 2016 election and trying to stop him from winning in 2020 because they don't have a response to his accomplishments. He (accurately) notes that some House Democrats have floated impeachment long before this Ukraine scandal broke. (Of course, there have been legitimate concerns about Trump's presidency before now, including the obstruction of justice findings in special counsel Robert Mueller's report, but he leaves that part out). He rails against the "Russia Hoax" and the recent inspector general report on the Russia investigation (which documented legitimate abuses in the FISA system, but concluded the Russia investigation was appropriately predicated). The letter is Trump unleashed, but it's only a certain level of alarming, given that we've heard all of this before. However, it does make one thing extraordinarily clear: Trump is not pleased to be joining the list of presidents who've faced impeachment. At least he got a chance to vent his feelings for the record. "It is time for you and the highly partisan Democrats in Congress to immediately cease this impeachment fantasy and get back to work for the American People," Trump ends his letter. "While I have no expectation that you will do so, I write this letter to you for the purpose of history and to put my thoughts on a permanent and indelible record." "One hundred years from now, when people look back on this affair, I want them to understand and learn from it, so that it can never happen to another President again." Read Trump's full letter here. Hurricanes winger Andrei Svechnikov pulls off lacrosse-style goal for second time - CBSSports.com Posted: 17 Dec 2019 08:04 PM PST ![]() Only one player in NHL history has ever successfully pulled off the lacrosse-style goal, and now he's done it twice. Carolina Hurricanes winger Andrei Svechnikov accomplished the feat for the second time this season on Tuesday night, delivering a sick highlight in Winnipeg. The goal came during the second period of the Hurricanes-Jets game and saw the 19-year-old Svechnikov cradle the puck behind the goal line before tucking it over the right shoulder of Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to give the Canes a 3-2 lead. The second installment of the trickery might be more impressive than the first, especially considering it came against arguably the league's best goaltender this season. And here's a comparison of the two: Svechnikov had time to set up shop and methodically execute the first lacrosse-style tally, which came in an October game against the Flames. However, the Hurricanes winger had a much smaller window and faced a bit more intense pressure as he attempted to double down on Tuesday night. Still, he got the job done on both occasions. The move originated from Michigan's Mike Legg, who got creative during a college hockey game in 1996, and it has been replicated numerous times over the years, but never in the NHL until Svechnikov successfully pulled it off for the first time earlier this year. Now having done it twice, Svechnikov may be starting to take some ownership of the fancy maneuver. Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:37 PM PST ![]() President Donald Trump on Tuesday sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a raging, six-page letter in which he tore into the impeachment process currently underway, calling it an "illegal, partisan attempted coup." The letter came as the House gears up to vote this week on whether to make Trump only the third president in American history to be formally impeached. "By proceeding with your invalid impeachment, you are violating your oaths of office, you are breaking your allegiance to the Constitution, and you are declaring open war on American Democracy," the president said in his letter. "You are the ones interfering in America's elections. You are the ones subverting America's Democracy. You are the ones Obstructing Justice," Trump wrote to the California Democrat. "You are the ones bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your own selfish, personal, political, and partisan gain." Trump is expected to be formally impeached on two separate articles: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, both of which Democrats argue violate Trump's oath of office and his pledge to uphold the Constitution. The House is expected to vote on impeachment Wednesday. In its mixture of incredulity, outrage and defiance, the letter echoed many of Trump's tweets. "After three years of unfair and unwarranted investigations, 45 million dollars spent, 18 angry Democrat prosecutors, the entire force of the FBI, headed by leadership now proven to be totally incompetent and corrupt, you have found NOTHING!" Trump wrote. "Few people in high position could have endured or passed the test. You do not know, nor do you care, the great damage and hurt you have inflicted upon wonderful and loving members of my family," he continued. A representative from Pelosi's office did not immediately respond to questions from CNBC about her reaction to the document. Trump appeared to acknowledge that the letter would have no formal effect on this week's House vote, but said he wanted his objections to be part of the trove of documents the impeachment will undoubtedly produce. "I write this letter to you for the purpose of history and to put my thoughts on a permanent and indelible record," Trump said. The president's missive also served to codify and formalize a wide range of protestations that Trump and House Republicans have worked to hone over the past three months, as the Democratic-controlled House conducted an impeachment inquiry into Trump. The purpose of the impeachment probe has been to determine whether the president abused his power by mounting a monthslong pressure campaign on the government of Ukraine, in order to force the war-torn U.S. ally to announce investigations into Trump's political opponents. The campaign included Trump's alleged conditioning of a coveted White House visit for Ukraine's newly elected president, as well as nearly $400 million in U.S. aid to the country, on its willingness to launch two investigations, one into the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, and another into a discredited conspiracy theory that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Provided the House approves the articles of impeachment, the proceedings will move to the Republican controlled Senate for a formal trial of the president, starting in the new year. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has signaled that members of Trump's party will support him and vote to acquit him of the charges, thereby preventing the president's removal from office. Read the entire letter, below. Sprint Ex-CEO Testifies in T-Mobile Merger Antitrust Trial - Market Realist Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:33 PM PST ![]() On Monday, Sprint's (S) ex-CEO Marcelo Claure testified that Sprint could survive without a merger deal with T-Mobile (TMUS), contradicting T-Mobile CEO John Legere. The T-Mobile and Sprint merger is facing an antitrust trial in a Manhattan federal court. Currently, about 14 Democratic state attorneys general are suing to stop the proposed $26 billion megamerger. The attorneys general argue that the consolidation of the third- and fourth-largest mobile operators in the US would hurt competition and wireless customers. Also, the plaintiffs argue that the deal would impact innovation and lead to higher prices. California and New York lead the multistate lawsuit. The court trial will likely end before Christmas. T-Mobile and Sprint argue that their combination is good for the US wireless industry. They suggest it would bring in healthy competition. If the deal goes through, the combined company could rapidly deploy a nationwide 5G network and eliminate duplicate costs. Meanwhile, the merger already has approval from the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission. These antitrust regulators approved the deal after Dish Network (DISH) agreed to purchase certain wireless assets from the proposed new T-Mobile. Dish would acquire Sprint's prepaid businesses for $1.4 billion and certain spectrum for $3.6 billion. However, the state attorneys general argue that Dish is accumulating FCC licenses for wireless spectrum and that the satellite TV provider has not yet showcased that it can deploy a wireless network. As a result, Dish would have to pay a $2.2 billion fine if its 5G network doesn't cover 70% of the US population by June 2023. T-Mobile and Sprint merger trial argumentsOn Monday, US Federal Judge Victor Marrero questioned Marcelo Claure about John Legere's testimony last week that Sprint can't survive without a T-Mobile merger. Legere had stated that the fourth-largest wireless carrier in the US would be "sold for parts" in the next two years if the merger deal doesn't go through. But according to a Bloomberg report on December 16, "Those are possibilities," Claure said. "I don't necessarily agree completely." He continued, "Sprint two years from now would be a very different from Sprint today, because we would cease to be a national competitor. … The company would likely have to borrow money and raise prices." Current Sprint CEO Michel Combes also testified on Monday. Combes stated that Sprint's alternative plan—if the T-Mobile merger doesn't get approval—is to concentrate on smaller markets. However, Sprint's network could still cover nearly 75% of the US population. Dish Network's chairman, Charlie Ergen, is likely to testify on Tuesday. Ergen is expected to defend the T-Mobile and Sprint merger deal and argue that the plaintiffs shouldn't be allowed to stop the transaction. According to a FierceWireless report on December 16, "Many investors believe that Ergen can be the swing factor in the trial," reports LightShed analysts. The report added, "We do not believe Dish has an ulterior motive to tank this deal based on prior discussions with Ergen and his team. That view has been further strengthened as we have gained a better understanding about the favorable structure and pricing of Dish's negotiated MVNO and after learning more about the struggles that Comcast has faced with its MVNO agreement with Verizon." Financial performanceIn the third quarter, T-Mobile's revenue of $11.1 billion was lower than analysts' estimate of $11.3 billion. The telecom company also reported an earnings of $1.01 per share, beating analysts' forecast for earnings of $0.96 per share. In comparison, Sprint reported earnings per share of -$0.07 on total revenue of $7.8 billion. For T-Mobile, analysts expect the fourth-quarter EPS to rise 12% year-over-year to $0.84. However, the revenue estimates of $11.8 billion reflect a year-over-year rise of 3%. Analysts expect Sprint's EPS to reach -$0.05 in December ended quarter—compared to -$0.03 in the year-ago quarter. They expect the company's revenues to fall 3.8% year-over-year to $8.3 billion. Analysts' recommendations and target pricesAmong the 22 analysts covering T-Mobile stock, 17 have a "buy" rating, up from 16 analysts in November month. About five analysts have a "hold" rating on the stock, unchanged from the last month. No Wall Street analysts rate TMUS stock as a "sell" right now. The analysts have given a 12-month mean target price of $90.16 on T-Mobile stock. The stock's price target represents potential upside of about 20% over the current stock price. Out of 17 analysts covering Sprint stock, two have a "buy" rating on the stock. Last month, only one analyst had a "buy" rating. About 13 analysts have a "hold" rating on the stock, with two having a "sell" rating, unchanged from the previous month. As of December 16, the analysts have given a 12-month mean target price of $6.43 on Sprint stock. Based on that day's closing price, this price target represents potential upside of about 23.9%. Stock performance and the T-Mobile–Sprint mergerSprint stock closed 0.4% lower on Monday and ended the trading day at $5.19. The stock was trading 35.6% below its 52-week high of $8.06. Meanwhile, the stock was trading 0.8% above the 52-week low of $5.15. At Monday's closing price, Sprint's market capitalization stood at $21.3 billion. On a year-to-date basis, Sprint stock fell around 10.8% due to merger uncertainty. In comparison, T-Mobile and AT&T (T) have returned 18.6% and 35.2%, respectively, year-to-date. Actress Hilarie Burton says Hallmark 'penalized' her 'for standing up for inclusivity' - NBC News Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:35 PM PST Actress Hilarie Burton says she walked away from a job with the Hallmark Channel in January after her requests for "diverse casting" were ignored. "Just going through some old emails from a #Hallmark job I was 'let go' from back in January," Burton wrote in a tweet Sunday. "I had insisted on a LGBTQ character, an interracial couple and diverse casting. I was polite, direct and professional." After executives gave her their notes on the script, Burton said that none of her requests were honored. Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings. "I was told 'take it or leave it'," Burton continued in a series of tweets. "I left it. And the paycheck. Sh---y being penalized for standing up for inclusivity." "I really wanted that job. It was close to my house. It paid really well. It was about the military, which you all know I hold dear." Burton said if faced with a similar situation, she would "walk away again in a heartbeat" and that "bigotry comes from the top and permeates the whole deal" at Hallmark. The actress and producer, who starred in the television drama "One Tree Hill" and has appeared in Hallmark Channel movies in the past, also acknowledged that her husband, actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, "works his a-- off" so she has "the luxury to choose morals over paying bills." "Not everyone has that! Nor should we be forced to be dependent," she said. "If I had to cover our mortgage and was told 'take it or leave it,' I'd be f-----d." Hallmark declined to comment on Burton's allegations Tuesday. The company apologized on Sunday after facing backlash for pulling television ads that featured brides kissing each other, following a petition from conservative groups objecting to the commercial. In a statement, Mike Perry, the president of Hallmark Cards, said the Hallmark Channel's parent company, Crown Media Family Networks, had been "agonizing" over its decision to remove the ad and the "hurt it has unintentionally caused." The announcement Sunday came after Zola, a wedding website service, said it would no longer advertise with Hallmark after the channel refused to air commercials that included same-sex couples. Hallmark said it would work to reinstate the same-sex wedding commercials. NBC News' parent company, NBCUniversal, and Comcast Ventures are investors in Zola. Tyler Seguin has goal in Stars 2-1 loss to Oilers - FOXSports.com Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:04 AM PST ![]() DALLAS (AP) – The NHL's top power play faced one of the league's best penalty-killing units and came out on top. Leon Draisaitl scored to propel Edmonton's red-hot power play, Mikko Koskinen made 34 saves and the Oilers beat the Dallas Stars 2-1 Monday night. That was the only power-play goal in six chances for Edmonton. "I like the chances of our power play," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. "Our power play is clicking along pretty good, even though (the Stars) make it tough on you." Edmonton has scored on an NHL-leading 31% of its power plays, including 10 man-advantage goals in its past eight games. The Oilers were going against a Dallas penalty kill ranked third in the league entering Monday – the Stars had killed 40 straight over their previous 11 home games dating to Oct. 29. "To take six penalties was not part of the program," Stars interim coach Rick Bowness said. "Our penalty killers did a great job of keeping us in the game." The Oilers scored twice in the first period, with Connor McDavid assisting on the goals by Zack Kassian and Draisaitl. Koskinen made 17 saves in the third period. He allowed only Tyler Seguin's goal with 2:37 to play after the Stars had pulled goalie Ben Bishop for an extra skater. It was Seguin's first goal in 12 games. "I want to produce," Seguin said. "I have just been the assist man as of late. So, it was nice to get one and I wish I could have got another one there in the last minute." Koskinen wasn't having any of that. He withstood a barrage of seven shots within 2 ½ minutes early in the third and had two more saves on a late-game Dallas power play. "It's pretty obvious that they're gonna put everything to the net when they're two goals behind," Koskinen said. "We protected the lead pretty well. The last three minutes was a little bit tougher. We handled it, so we're happy for that." He was protecting an early 2-0 lead. McDavid passed to Zack Kassian in the slot for a wrist shot past Bishop at 8:07. Draisaitl scored on Edmonton's second power play with a wrist shot from the right circle at 14:13. He took a pass from Alex Chiasson across the crease for Draisaitl's 21st goal this season, sixth on the power play. The Oilers have 34 power-play goals. "We were able to get another one on the power play," Chiasson said. "It gives us a chance to breathe and establish our game and just play the way we're capable of playing, not trying to open it up." Bishop finished with 26 saves. Edmonton ended a four-game losing streak (0-3-1) and pulled even with Pacific Division leader Arizona at 42 points. "Our goaltender was really good," Tippett said, "especially in the third when they pushed hard." Dallas had a five-game point streak (4-0-1) before the loss. The Stars are 2-1-1 since Rick Bowness took over as interim head coach, including three games in the last four nights. NOTES: McDavid has 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 11 career games against Dallas. … McDavid (59 points) and Draisaitl (57) are 1-2 in the NHL scoring race. … Edmonton's six power plays were the most against Dallas since the Stars faced eight on Nov. 5 against Colorado. Seven of the nine penalties in the game were for tripping. … Oilers D Oscar Klefbom played 30:32 and blocked a game-high 6 shots. The Stars had just eight blocks in the game; Edmonton had 20, 10 in the third period. UP NEXT Oilers: Complete a two-game trip at St. Louis on Tuesday. Stars: Play on Thursday at Tampa Bay in the first of two games in two nights in Florida. Boosted by strong economy, Trump's popularity edges up during impeachment - The Times of Israel Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:37 AM PST ![]() WASHINGTON — Strong economic figures have helped US President Donald Trump to his highest approval ratings ever, despite impeachment, a new poll found Monday. Although the Quinnipiac University survey said Trump has a high of 43 percent for his job approval, that's still far below nearly all previous presidents in modern times at the same point in their administration. According to the poll, carried out December 11-15, 52 percent of Americans still disapprove of Trump's job performance. Trump has been mired in those unusually low ratings for nearly his entire presidency. But the latest figures show a progression indicating support growing for Trump despite the impeachment process threatening his presidency. The House of Representatives could vote to impeach for abuse of office and obstruction of Congress as early as this Wednesday. A Quinnipiac poll earlier in December had 41 percent approval and 55 percent disapproval, while an October poll, done before impeachment hearings began, put those figures at 38 and 58 percent. Much of the support for Trump appears to be linked to positive feelings about the economy, which is in a period of strong growth, with record low unemployment. Nearly three quarters, 73 percent, saw the economy as good or excellent, the poll found. "That view of a strong economy seems to be helping President Trump match his highest job approval rating since being elected, despite facing becoming the third president in US history to be impeached," said Quinnipiac polling analyst Mary Snow. The poll found little changed figures on impeachment, with 45 backing Trump's impeachment and removal from office and 51 percent opposing. Support for impeachment and removal back in October was at 45-48 percent. Not surprisingly, the poll looks radically different when the answers are divided by party. Ninety five percent of Republicans oppose removing Trump from office, while 86 percent of Democrats are in favor. Estonia apologises after minister mocks Finnish PM by calling her "a sales girl" - FRANCE 24 Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:37 AM PST ![]() Issued on: Modified: Estonia apologised to Finland on Monday after Estonia's interior minister mocked Finland's new prime minister -- the world's youngest-serving government leader -- as "a sales girl" and questioned her ability to run the Nordic country. Advertising Mart Helme, 70, Estonian interior minister and leader of the populist far-right party Ekre, on Sunday ridiculed Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, 34, and her government, in which four out of five coalition leaders are women under 35. "Now we see how one sales girl has become a prime minister and how some other street activists and non-educated people have also joined the cabinet," Helme said on his party's radio talk show. His comments prompted the opposition to call for his resignation, while Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid asked Finland's President Sauli Niinisto to pass on her apologies to Marin and her government. Social Democrat Marin, who has spoken about growing up in a disadvantaged family, worked as a cashier before studying at university and embarking on a political career. "I'm extremely proud of Finland. Here a poor family's child can educate themselves and achieve their goals in life. A cashier can become even a prime minister," Marin wrote on Twitter. Helme, a former Estonian ambassador to Russia, is known for outspoken statements that regularly embarrass Prime Minister Juri Ratas and his Centre Party, Ekre's coalition partner. Ekre was accepted for the first time into a government coalition in April, after Ratas lost parliamentary elections but clinched a deal with Ekre to stay in power. Estonian opposition leader Kaja Kallas said on Monday the opposition would organise a no-confidence vote in parliament if Helme does not resign after his comments about Finland's new leaders. Previous such attempts have failed. "The interior minister has offended the Finnish government and personally attacked the newly-appointed Finnish prime minister," she said in a statement.
