Veteran 'Will and Grace' actress Shelley Morrison dies at 83 - ABC News

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:50 PM PST

Shelley Morrison, an actress with a 50-year career who was best known for playing a memorable maid on "Will & Grace," has died

Shelley Morrison, an actress with a 50-year career who was best known for playing a memorable maid on "Will & Grace," died Sunday, her publicist said.

Morrison died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from heart failure after a brief illness, publicist Lori DeWaal told The Associated Press. She was 83.

Morrison played Rosario Salazar, a maid from El Salvador, in the original run of "Will & Grace" from 1999 to 2006, becoming part of a cast that won a Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble in a comedy series.

The character, originally written for a single episode, proved so popular in her interactions with co-star Megan Mullally that she would appear in 68 episodes during the NBC series' eight seasons.

"Rosario is one of my all-time favorite characters," Morrison said recently, according to a statement and biography announcing her death. "She reminds me a lot of my own mother, who loved animals and children, but she would not suffer fools. It is very significant to me that we were able to show an older, Hispanic woman who is bright and smart and can hold her own."

Eric McCormack, who starred as Will in the NBC sitcom, recalled Morrison on Twitter as a "beautiful soul" and wonderful actor. "Her work as Rosario, season after season, was as nuanced and real as it was hysterical," McCormack tweeted.

Besides the opportunity to portray a strong Latina, Morrison valued "Will & Grace" for its breakthrough TV depiction of gay characters, said her husband, Walter Dominguez.

"Shelley's greatest pride as an actress was in playing the indomitable Rosario, in a comedy series that furthered the cause of social equity and fairness for LGBTQ people. ... She believed that the best way to change hearts and minds was through comedy," Dominguez said in a statement.

Before "Will & Grace," Morrison was best known for playing Sister Sixto on "The Flying Nun" alongside Sally Field from 1967 to 1970.

She guest-starred on dozens of television series starting in the early 1960s, including "The Fugitive," "L.A. Law" and "Murder, She Wrote." Most recently, she voiced a character, Mrs. Portillo, on the Disney animated series "Handy Manny."

Born Rachel Mitrani to Jewish parents from Spain in the Bronx, New York, in 1936, Morrison spoke primarily Spanish as a child. She was often cast as Latina characters, but she played a range of ethnicities in theater, television and film.

Her movie roles put her in casts with Hollywood's biggest stars of several eras.

She appeared with Dean Martin in 1968's "How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life," with Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl" the same year, with Gregory Peck in 1969's "Mackenna's Gold," with Shelley Long in "Troop Beverly Hills" in 1989, and with Salma Hayek in "Fools Rush In" in 1997.

Morrison is survived by her husband of more than 40 years.

This story has been updated to correct the punctuation in the title "Will & Grace" and the spelling of Barbra Streisand's first name and Megan Mullally's last name.

Bruins Wrap: Three-Goal Third Gives Boston Comeback Win Vs. Canadiens - NESN

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:47 PM PST

It wasn't as easy as five days ago, but the Bruins extended their win streak to seven games thanks to three unanswered goals in the third period.

Boston trailed for much of the game, with Montreal leading from 1:58 after puck drop until the Bruins tied it in the final 20 minutes on David Pastrnak's 25th (!) goal of the season. David Backes potted the game-winner in his return to the lineup and Jake DeBrusk added one of his own to help give the Black and Gold a 3-1 win at TD Garden.

Joel Armia accounted for the Habs' only tally of the night.

Tuukka Rask turned away 28 pucks, while Carey Price stopped 31.

With the win, the Bruins moved to 19-3-5, while the Canadiens fell to 11-10-6.

Here's how it all went down.

VISITORS STRIKE FIRST
The Habs broke the scoreless tie just 1:58 into the game.

An ugly Zdeno Chara turnover behind the Bruins' net led to Armia easily taking the puck from the defenseman and backhanding it off Charlie McAvoy's skates and past Rask for the 1-0 lead.

Boston went on the penalty kill with 5:22 left in the opening period when McAvoy was whistled for a high stick. Although the B's were unable to find a seam and get the puck out of the zone for a majority of the two minutes, Montreal did not capitalize and it remained a one-goal game.

The Canadiens held a slim 11-10 shot advantage after one.

SCORELESS, BUT SPICY SECOND
There were no goals from either side through the middle period, but the B's showed a spark toward the end of it.

Shea Weber hit Pastrnak and he responded by the top-line winger shoving him back. A melee sparked between the opposing lines, with DeBrusk and Brendan Gallagher getting tangled up before DeBrusk tackled Gallagher to the ice. Torey Krug was being held back as the rest of the squads went at each other at center ice. The kerfuffle resulted in Gallagher, DeBrusk going off for roughing, while Weber went to the box for interference.

Armia leveled Pastrnak moments later and knocked off the winger's helmet, but no penalty was called.

Boston didn't score and still found itself down 1-0 at the end of 40, but the team certainly got some life back into it. The B's outshot the Habs 10-8.

WELCOME BACK(ES)
Pastrnak finally got the B's on the board at the 6:16 mark of the third period.

The winger absolutely smoked one off the rush past Price from the right faceoff circle to make it 1-1 and extended his league lead to 25 goals.

The B's went on the power play when Nick Cousins was whistled for hooking Krug, and it allowed Boston to take its first lead of the game.

Backes, who was playing in his first game since Nov. 2, took a David Krejci feed and hammered it home from the high slot to make it 2-1 with 10:29 gone from the period.

DeBrusk then got in on the fun, potting the third unanswered goal for Boston with a beautiful give-and-go goal with help from Charlie Coyle.

And the Habs never could come back as the B's notched their seventh straight win.

UP NEXT
The Bruins get a day off before welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes to Boston on Tuesday. Puck drop from TD Garden is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Rashford has goal taken away by Premier League who credit Aston Villa keeper Tom Heaton - The Sun

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:17 PM PST

MARCUS RASHFORD has seen his headed goal cruelly awarded to Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton after a review.

The England striker thought he'd scored yet again for Manchester United as his fine run of form continued.

However, the Goal Accreditation Panel have deemed that it was actually an own goal.

With Aston Villa leading 1-0, Rashford turned a header onto the inside of the post shortly before half-time.

As the ball span across the line, it touched Heaton and went into the back of the net.

Replays initially appeared inconclusive as it appeared the ball may have spun into the far corner had Heaton not intervened.

Had the goal been given to Rashford it would have been the sixth game in a row he had netted in.

The goal made it 1-1 at Old Trafford but there was more drama to come.

Victor Lindelof put the Red Devils ahead with a back post header.

But just moments later, Tyrone Mings finished brilliantly from inside the box to level the score back up at 2-2 and that's how it finished.

It was a fine header from Rashford

SEA games in Philippines cancelled due to typhoon - Deccan Herald

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 06:43 PM PST

The Philippines has begun evacuating thousands of people, local officials said Sunday, as a powerful typhoon rumbling in from the Pacific forced Southeast Asian Games organisers to cancel or reschedule some events.

Forecasters expect Typhoon Kammuri to make landfall Monday evening or Tuesday morning, packing gusts of 170 kilometres (105 miles) per hour and maximum sustained winds of 140 kph.

The storm entered Philippine territory Saturday evening, shortly before President Rodrigo Duterte and boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao launched the Games with a colourful opening ceremony.

This year's Games in Clark, Manila and Subic, which run through to December 11, are already particularly complex with a record 56 sports across dozens of venues that are in some cases hours apart by car.

Outdoor events in Subic -- on the west coast of the main Philippine island of Luzon in the country's north -- were the first to be affected by Kammuri.

"The windsurfing has been cancelled until we have a more accurate picture of the weather," Ramon Agregado, the organising committee's head of the Subic cluster of venues, told AFP.

The women's triathlon event was brought forward to Sunday, Agregado said, "so we could take advantage of the good weather". Duathlon events scheduled for Tuesday will now take place on Monday.

Agregado said that venues will not be changed, but in the event of bad weather the equipment will be taken down and put back together once the events are rescheduled.

Some local government units in central Bicol region urged people to begin leaing their homes on Saturday night.

By Sunday afternoon, more than 3,000 people were in evacuation centres, mostly in schools and gymnasiums in Camarines Norte, the disaster management office of the province said.

Most of them live in coastal areas and low-lying places where flash floods and landslides are possible due to heavy rains that will be brought by the typhoon.

No mandatory evacuation has been ordered yet, the disaster management office said.

School classes and government offices in some towns will be closed Monday and Tuesday in anticipation of the heavy rains.

The Philippines, which last hosted the Games in 2005, are aiming to win the most medals, and history is on their side: seven of the last 11 SEA Games hosts have topped the table, reflecting the tradition of rewriting the sporting programme to suit local strengths.

The hosts got off to a flying start on Sunday, scooping golds at the dancesport competition and triathlon, and topped the table with 17 medals by the afternoon.

Around 8,750 athletes and team officials are expected at this year's 30th edition -- the biggest ever -- and there are some 12,000 volunteers.

Organisers hope more than 500 million viewers will tune in on TV.

Young Tigers must keep spirits up, despite loss - New Straits Times

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 06:08 PM PST

"DON'T lose hope and fight on until the last drop of your blood."

That's my advice to the national Sea Games football team who were humbled 1-0 by the Philippines in Friday's Group A match in Manila.

Friday was indeed a 'black' day for Malaysian football.

In women's competition, the dominant Philippines thrashed Malaysia 5-0 to reach the semi-finals.

Of course, the defeat to the Filipino men's team, who we still regard as minnows in this region, is embarrassing considering that our national senior and youth sides have been making steady progress.

Coach Ong Kim Swee labeled the defeat as "shameful" and that everyone in the team should feel ashamed as Philippines showed more hunger to succeed.

For the record, it was Kim Swee's most embarrassing defeat in his fifth straight Sea Games outing as a coach.

Many now feel it's time for Kim Swee to go as he has been in the hot seat for a long time.

Most have even forgotten what he has achieved with the national youth team in the past.

Apart from guiding the team to the Sea Games title in 2011, he also masterminded Malaysia's famous 2-1 win over the Son Heung Min-led South Korea in last year's Indonesia Asian Games to top their group before being shown the door by Japan in the last 16.

He also guided the team to the quarter-finals of last year's AFC Under-23 Championship following the surprise 1-0 win over Middle East giants Saudi Arabia.

But now everyone seems to have forgotten his contributions.

True, the team had no business losing to the Philippines.

The team clearly lacked depth, especially in attack.

Akhyar Rashid and the six others with senior caps are also not performing up to expectations.

The absence of forward Safawi Rasid and US-based Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal could be one reason for their dismal run, with the synthetic pitch at the Rizal Memorial Stadium also being a contributing factor.

The seniors only reported for training a few days before the youth team left for Manila as they were with Tan Cheng Hoe's team for the World Cup qualifiers.

Many things did not go Kim Swee's way in the build up to the Sea Games, so it is unfair to blame him alone for the defeat.

However, it is not the end of the world yet.

Yes, Malaysia have lost to the Philippines, the rising football nation in the region, but they still have two more games to play — and make amends.

If Malaysia can beat Timor Leste and Cambodia, and other results go their way, they will be in the semi-finals.

There are passionate fans who cannot accept defeats. They, however, should keep cool and support Kim Swee's side until their final match instead of criticising the coaches and players.

Good luck in your next game, Young Tigers.

Panthers haunted by another missed opportunity at the goal line - Panthers.com

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 06:07 PM PST

"I didn't see anything open right away and tried to scramble and make a play and they got me," Allen said. "I'll go back and look at it and see where he was and see what they did, but if he was open, I've got to find him."

Even before Wright ran to the flat and turned his head, he said he fully expected to see the ball sailing towards him because of the way the play had been designed.

"I definitely thought I was going to get that ball, but I'll be the first one to tell you, the quarterback has the hardest job on the field," Wright said. "It's hard to see everybody. It's not his fault he didn't see me."

That pressure led to Allen's scrambling and, ultimately, a 23-yard sack and the end of the game.

Still, just as in Green Bay, a touchdown wouldn't have guaranteed victory. Trailing 29-21, the Panthers offense would have had to line right back up and do it all over again just to even the score with a two-point conversion – of which Carolina is only 1-of-3 this season. Even then, the game would still have to be won in overtime.

But without the ability to execute in these critical situations, whether they're for the win or the tie, the Panthers have come up empty-handed time and time again.

"It's haunted us all year. We've just got to be better," Wright said. "Any time that you have a chance to win a game and you don't pull it off, that's always the most heartfelt loss.

"If we got out there and just got our ass kicked, not to say you can deal with it, but it's like, 'OK, we got our ass kicked, let's regroup, let's bounce back. It's them close ones that are tough."

Veteran 'Will and Grace' actress Shelley Morrison dies at 83 - The Associated Press

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 06:05 PM PST

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shelley Morrison, an actress with a 50-year career who was best known for playing a memorable maid on "Will and Grace," died Sunday, her publicist said.

Morrison died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from heart failure after a brief illness, publicist Lori DeWaal told The Associated Press. She was 83.

Morrison played Rosario Salazar, a maid from El Salvador, in the original run of "Will and Grace" from 1999 to 2006, becoming part of a cast that won a Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble in a comedy series.

The character, originally written for a single episode, proved so popular in her interactions with co-star Megan Mullaly that she would appear in 68 episodes during the NBC series' eight seasons.

"Rosario is one of my all-time favorite characters," Morrison said recently, according to a statement and biography announcing her death. "She reminds me a lot of my own mother, who loved animals and children, but she would not suffer fools. It is very significant to me that we were able to show an older, Hispanic woman who is bright and smart and can hold her own,"

Before "Will and Grace," Morrison was best known for playing Sister Sixto on "The Flying Nun" alongside Sally Field from 1967 to 1970.

She was cast primarily as Latina characters, but she played a range of ethnicities in theater, television and film.

Her movie roles put her in casts with Hollywood's biggest stars of several eras.

She appeared with Dean Martin in 1968's "How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life," with Barbara Streisand in "Funny Girl" the same year, with Gregory Peck in 1969's "Mackenna's Gold," with Shelley Long in "Troop Beverly Hills" in 1989, and with Salma Hayek in "Fools Rush In" in 1997.

Morrison is survived by her husband of more than 40 years, Walter Dominguez.

Scott Morrison turns to Jacqui Lambie over medevac vote - 9News

Posted: 01 Dec 2019 04:43 PM PST

The prime minister will sit down with independent senator Jacqui Lambie to get her crucial support for the government's repeal of medevac laws.

The government is still licking its wounds over its failed union-busting bill and Scott Morrison needs Senator Lambie's vote for a win in the senate.

Senator Lambie continues to remain tight-lipped on her demands, saying it's a national security issue.

The medevac laws give doctors a greater say in transferring refugees from offshore detention to Australia for medical treatment.

Sources have told the newspapers that Senator Lambie wants to see offshore detainees resettled in New Zealand.

But Senator Lambie refused to reveal her conditions yesterday.

"I have given the government a choice," Senator Lambie told ABC's Insiders program.

She said she was negotiating with Mr Morrison and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton in good faith.

"We have put a lot of hours into this, from myself and my office, and we are doing everything we possibly can to make sure this is a great outcome," Senator Lambie said

New Zealand has long offered to take 150 refugees per year from Australia's offshore processing centres in Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

Both coalition and Labor governments have refused, saying it would lead to more asylum-seeker boats arriving.

Last week, the government was blindsided by One Nation who voted against its contentious industrial relations bill.
