Here are the top moments from the sixth Democratic debate in Los Angeles - CNBC Posted: 20 Dec 2019 12:01 AM PST ![]() Democratic presidential candidates (L-R) former tech executive Andrew Yang, South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), former Vice President Joe Biden Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Amy Klobuchar D-MN) and Tom Steyer participate in the Democratic presidential primary debate at Loyola Marymount University on December 19, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Mayor Pete Buttigieg finally got the top-tier treatment during the sixth Democratic presidential debate hosted in Los Angeles on Thursday, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar found the spotlight. The seven Democrats on stage, which also included former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., entrepreneur Andrew Yang and billionaire Tom Steyer, spent three hours at Loyola Marymount University in an at-times contentious debate that took place with less than two months before voters begin caucusing in Iowa, the first contest state. Biden remains the front-runner in national surveys, though Buttigieg has recently surged in the first contest states of Iowa and New Hampshire. Biden, who is 77, refused to commit to running for a second term if he won in 2020. "Let's see where we are, let's see what happens," he said. Buttigieg's rise made him a target — and Klobuchar took aim at his argument that he is the most electable contender because of his wins in South Bend. "Mayor, if you had won in Indiana, that would be one thing. You tried and you lost by 20 points," Klobuchar said, referring to Buttigieg's failed 2010 bid for state treasurer. The debate came one day after the House of Representatives voted for Trump's impeachment, setting him up to be the third president in history to face a Senate trial over whether he will be removed from office. Despite the harsh sparring, the Democrats on stage united in taking on Trump. "We know what a gift it would be to the future and to the country for literally anybody up here to become president of the United States compared to what we've got," Buttigieg said at one point. Here are the debate's top moments. Democrats sound off on Trump impeachmentDonald Trump Timothy A. Clary | AFP | Getty Images The debate kicked off Thursday night with a question on why the majority of Americans do not support impeachment and how they can make the case to voters. Six out of seven candidates focused on what they described as Trump's corruption. "This president has made corruption originally his argument, that he would drain the swamp. And yet he came to Washington, broke that promise and has done everything he can for the wealthy and the well connected," Warren said. Biden complained foreign leaders are viewed more favorably than the president of the United States, adding, "We need to restore the integrity of the presidency, of the office of the presidency." Steyer shifted the conversation to the upcoming impeachment trial in the Senate saying the witnesses the White House has prohibited from testifying should be called up. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has demanded that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell call administration officials including Acting Chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former National Security Advisor John Bolton to the witness stand. "If we want the American people to understand what's going on, we need to have the administration officials testify on television so we can judge," Steyer said during the debate. "The American people deserve to see the truth of these administrative people under oath so we can make up our mind." Yang broke with his rivals, saying Democrats must stop focusing on Trump and try to explain how they will make life better for the average voter. "The more we act like Donald Trump is the cause of all our problems, the more Americans lose trust that we can actually see what's going on in those communities and solve those problems," he said. "We have to stop being obsessed with impeachment, which unfortunately strikes many Americans as a ball game when you know what the score is going to be, and start digging in and solve all the problems that got Donald Trump elected in the first place." Sanders and Klobuchar part ways on coming USMCA voteDemocratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) reacts to Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) during the Democratic presidential primary debate at Loyola Marymount University on December 19, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Sanders and Klobuchar divided on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that will soon come to a vote in the Senate after the House of Representatives approved the measure late Thursday. The trade deal, an update to NAFTA, earned the support of an overwhelming majority of Democrats in the House after a push for stronger labor protections delivered the support of the AFL-CIO, the country's largest federation of labor unions. Sanders said the trade deal was a "modest improvement" that would do nothing to stop outsourcing, and that he would not support it. "What we need is a trade policy that stands up for workers, stands up for farmers," Sanders said. "And by the way, the word climate change, to the best of my knowledge, is not mentioned in this new NAFTA agreement at all — which is an outrage — so no, I will not be voting for this agreement." Klobuchar channeled Sen. Sherrod Brown, a fellow Midwesterner, "who has voted against every trade agreement that has come in front of him, and he's voting for this, and I am too." "I think this agreement, while Senator Sanders is correct there are some issues with it, is much better than the one originally proposed," Klobuchar said. After the debate, a Warren surrogate said the senator has not come to a final decision on how she will vote on the deal. "The senator is still considering all the different options," said Nelini Stamp, National Organizing Director at the Working Families Party. "She is considering what labor has to say, what community organizations have to say." Warren on critics who say her proposed tax hikes would stifle growth: 'They're just wrong'Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) speaks during the Democratic presidential primary debate at Loyola Marymount University on December 19, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Warren, who has proposed a bigger tax hike on the wealthy than anyone else in the race, was asked to answer criticism from economists who say her plans would stifle growth and investment. "Oh — they're just wrong," Warren responded, prompting cheers and applause from the Los Angeles crowd. Warren's wealth tax proposal includes slapping a 2% tax on net worth between $50 million and $1 billion and a 6% tax on wealth over 10 figures. Buttigieg offered an indirect rebuke to Warren in his response. While taxes on the wealthy will have to go up, Buttigieg said, politicians should make "promises that we can keep" without "the kind of taxation that economists tell us could hurt the economy." Buttigieg and Warren have sparred in recent weeks over transparency. Buttigieg, polling behind Warren in national polls, recently surpassed her in polls in the early contest states of Iowa and New Hampshire. Climate change takes center stageFirefighters try to control a back burn as the Carr fire continues to spread towards the towns of Douglas City and Lewiston near Redding, California on July 31, 2018. Mark Ralston | AFP | Getty Images The debate focused on climate change for what seemed like more time on Thursday than in earlier sessions. Moderator Tim Alberta, a chief political correspondent for Politico, asked whether candidates would support a federal program to subsidize the relocation of American families and businesses away from cities like Miami that scientists have said will be climate danger zones in decades to come. Sanders said the issue is not relocating people, but rather "whether we save the planet for our children and our grandchildren." "The issue, as you should know what the scientists are telling us, is that they have underestimated the threat and severity of climate change. You're talking about the Paris Agreement, that's fine. Ain't enough. We have got to – and I've introduced legislation to do this – declare a national emergency. The United States has got to lead the world," Sanders said. "What I think we need to do," said Klobuchar, is "get back into the international climate agreement. I will do that on day one." Klobuchar noted that California Gov. Gavin Newsom's efforts to implement climate solutions in the face of a spate of deadly fires in the state, have been "defied every step of the way by the Trump administration." Buttigieg said he would involve the average person in the movement rather than relying on politicians in Washington. "I've seen politicians in Washington saying the right thing about climate change as long as I've been alive. All these plans we have to get carbon neutral by 2050," he said. "Their impact is multiplied by zero unless something actually gets done." Warren and Buttigieg spar over 'billionaires in wine caves'Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) speaks as South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg listens during the Democratic presidential primary debate at Loyola Marymount University on December 19, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Warren and Buttigieg delivered the big fight that everyone was waiting for following weeks of attacks between the two. After Warren criticized Buttigieg for a recent fundraiser hosted in a wine cave, Buttigieg accused Warren of issuing a "purity test" that she could not meet herself. "The mayor just recently had a fundraiser that was held in a wine cave full of crystals and served $900 a bottle wine. Think about who comes to that," Warren said, referring to an event Buttigieg held in Napa earlier this month. "We made the decision many years ago that rich people in smoke filled rooms should not pick the next president of the United States. Billionaires in wine caves should not pick the next president of the United States," she said. Buttigieg responded that he was "literally the only person on this stage who is not a millionaire or a billionaire." "Senator, your net worth is 100 times mine," he said. "We need the support from everybody who is committed to helping us defeat Donald Trump." Tough talk on ChinaThe candidates took a hard line on China's human rights track record, with some of the strongest language coming from Buttigieg. "If they do anything like Tiananmen Square...they will be isolated from the free world. And we will lead that isolation diplomatically and economically," the mayor of South Bend, Indiana said. The focus comes at a tense time in U.S.-China relations. China has rounded up its minority Uighur Muslim community into camps it says are designed to provide vocational training, but which critics describe as concentration camps. But the U.S. remains hugely reliant on China economically, both its manufacturing prowess and its consumers who buy U.S. products. Trump is in the midst of negotiating a trade deal with the country, with the terms of a "phase one" deal said to be agreed to, though details remain scant. Not everyone agreed with Buttigieg. Steyer took a more moderate stance. "We actually can't isolate ourselves from China. In fact, we have to work with them as a frenemy, people who disturb us, who we disagree with, but who in effect we are linked to in a world that is ever getting closer," he said. Klobuchar bombards ButtigiegDemocratic presidential hopeful Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar speaks during the sixth Democratic primary debate of the 2020 presidential campaign season co-hosted by PBS NewsHour & Politico at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California on December 19, 2019. Frederic J. Brown | AFP | Getty images Klobuchar tore into Buttigieg during a heated back-and-forth about electability and political experience. Klobuchar has trailed Buttigieg in national polls for months. Both have carved out more moderate positions than candidates such as Warren or Sanders and are viewed as direct competitors in races like the Iowa caucus. Klobuchar, who has largely focused her attacks on Trump rather than other Democrats, began by criticizing Buttigieg's previous remarks about the experience of other Democratic candidates. "I just think you should respect our experience, when you look at how you evaluate someone who can get things done," she said. Buttigieg, 37, the youngest primary candidate who has never won a statewide race in his home state of Indiana, pushed back by invoking his time in the military. "That is my experience, and it may not be the same as yours, but it counts, senator. It counts," he said. Klobuchar was undeterred: "That's not what this is about. This is about choosing a president." "We should have someone heading up this ticket that has actually won and been able to show they can gather the support that you talk about … and not just done it once. I have done it three times," she said. Buttigieg, who has served two terms as mayor of South Bend —with a population of just over 100,000 — fired back. "If you want to talk about the capacity to win, try putting together a coalition to bring you back to office with 80% of the vote as a gay dude in [Vice President] Mike Pence's Indiana," he said. Klobuchar followed up with perhaps her hardest hit of the night, referencing Buttigieg's loss in a 2010 bid to become Indiana state treasurer. "If you had won in Indiana, that would be one thing," she said. "You tried and you lost by 20 points." 2 Firefighters Die in Australia Fires and Scott Morrison Ends Vacation - The New York Times Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:31 PM PST ![]() MELBOURNE, Australia — Two volunteer firefighters died on Thursday night while battling ferocious blazes in the region surrounding Sydney, prompting Australia's prime minister, Scott Morrison, to say he would cut short a family vacation to Hawaii that had enraged constituents. The firefighters, Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, had been among a convoy trying to fend off wildfires southwest of Sydney when their truck hit a tree and rolled over, killing them and injuring three other passengers, the authorities said. They were the first firefighter deaths in a fire season that has overwhelmed the largely volunteer brigades battling the blazes. "This is an absolutely devastating event in what has already been an incredibly difficult day and fire season," the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said in a statement released on Friday. Both men were fathers to young children. "Our hearts are breaking," the service's association president, Brian McDonough, said in a statement. The deaths come as more than 100 out-of-control wildfires, stoked by extreme heat and strong winds, continue to rage in New South Wales. The state government has declared a state of emergency, and the smog reaches as far as Melbourne, where it blanketed the city. Catastrophic fire conditions have also been forecast in South Australia, where temperatures reached nearly 122 degrees yesterday, and asphalt roads have begun to melt in the record-breaking heat. With Australia literally on fire and melting, the prime minister's absence drew furious criticism from other ministers and the public, who this year have choked through hazardous pollution levels in Sydney and staged protests and strikes calling for urgent action to combat climate change. The hashtags #NSWfires and #wherethebloodyhellareya — a reference to a 2006 tourism campaign calling on people to come see the natural beauty of Australia — began trending on Twitter. An actress in the campaign, Lara Worthington, took aim at Mr. Morrison, who has played down any connection between climate change and the fires. In a statement released on Friday, Mr. Morrison said that "given the most recent tragic events" he would be returning to Sydney as soon as possible and deeply regretted "the offense caused to any of the many Australians affected by the terrible bushfires by my taking leave with my family at this time." Speaking on local radio on Friday morning, he added that, "if it was possible not to be where I was this week, well, maybe. But this had been arranged some time ago and that's just how it was." He said he expected that Australians would be pleased he was returning, but added, "I don't hold a hose" and "I don't sit in a control room." The leader of the opposition party, Anthony Albanese, criticized the prime minister for his handling of the fires and suggested that volunteers should be compensated for the increasingly strenuous work that was being expected from them as fire seasons grow in length and intensity. "The government can't see through the smoke that's clouding our cities, our towns and our regions," Mr. Albanese told reporters on Thursday. "These fires," he added, "are not business as usual." Sharon Ellicott, the chief executive of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service Association, which represents volunteer firefighters, said that the association had historically been opposed to compensating volunteer firefighters, because it could damage the service's ethos. But, she added, "we're really in unprecedented times." In addition to the two firefighters who died, five others were injured in a nearby blaze, with three of them taken to the hospital suffering serious burns on Thursday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Kane has goal, 3 assists in Blackhawks' 4-1 win over Jets - USA TODAY Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:27 PM PST ![]() WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Patrick Kane was glad the Chicago Blackhawks kept their cool. Kane scored his 19th goal of the season and had three assists in the Blackhawks' 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night. It took Chicago 12:32 to get its first shot on goal in the second, and the Blackhawks were outshot 14-3 in the middle frame. "We were really happy with our start, not a great second, and would've been easy to be frustrated and not have a great third," Kane said. "But we came out and, like I said, scored early, which I think helped. "And then they got one, no real panic on the bench or anything, just kept playing solid, did the right things out there. Nice to build off that start we had and have a great third period, too." Robin Lehner made 36 saves, Alex Nylander had a goal and assist and Dominik Kubalik and Erik Gustafsson also scored to help the Blackhawks rebound from a 4-1 home loss to Colorado on Wednesday night. Tucker Poolman scored for Winnipeg and Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves. "We had a lot of good chances, a lot of shots to the net," Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers said. Cylander scored 59 seconds into the game on a two-on-one with Kane, shooting the puck high on Hellebuyck's glove side. Chicago made it 2-0 37 seconds into the third period, with Kane capitalizing on a turnover near Winnipeg's blue line and quickly feeding the puck to Kubalik for a breakaway. Winnipeg countered with Poolman's one-timer at 5:09. The Jets were called for too many men and Gustafsson took a pass from Kane and ripped a one-timer past Hellebuyck on the power play with 9:02 left. Kane capped the scoring with 3:21 left. "We were really happy with our start, not a great second, and would've been easy to be frustrated and not have a great third," Kane said. "But we came out and, like I said, scored early, which I think helped. "And then they got one, no real panic on the bench or anything, just kept playing solid, did the right things out there. Nice to build off that start we had and have a great third period, too." Chicago forward Brandon Saad left the game after he was checked into the boards by Jets defenseman Luca Sbisa. Saad fell and appeared to injure his right leg. ... "He's going to be out a couple weeks," Chicago coach Jeremy Colliton said. "We'll see. Obviously it's ankle and I don't have an exact timeline, but it's not day-to-day." NOTES: The Jets were 1-2-0 on their homestand. UP NEXT: Blackhawks: At Colorado on Saturday night. Jets: At Minnesota on Saturday. In debate, Democrats promise to make the case for Trump's impeachment - CNA Posted: 19 Dec 2019 10:01 PM PST LOS ANGELES: The Democratic US presidential candidates promised during a debate on Thursday (Dec 19) to make the case to a divided American public that the impeachment of President Donald Trump was necessary to protect the dignity and honor of the office. The day after the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump, many of seven contenders taking part in the debate acknowledged that the American public is split over the move, with Republicans largely opposing it and Democrats favouring it. But they said it is a fundamental question of right and wrong. READ: US House impeachment of Trump sets stage for trial in Senate"We cannot have a president with that temperament who is dishonouring the presidency of the United States," said US Senator Bernie Sanders, one of three senators in the debate who will sit as jurors in a trial of Trump in the Republican-led Senate that will determine whether he is removed from office. In a historic vote on Wednesday, the Democratic-led House voted to impeach Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress arising from his request that Ukraine investigate Democratic political rival Joe Biden. READ: The impeachment charges against US President Donald TrumpREAD: Trump and Ukraine: A chronology from phone call to impeachmentTrump became only the third US president to be impeached by the House. No president has ever been removed from office via impeachment. The Democratic candidates, who have all backed impeachment before, said they would try to convince the public of Trump's unsuitability for the office. "We have to prosecute the case against him, and that means we need a candidate for president who can draw the sharpest distinction," said US Senator Elizabeth Warren, another juror in the trial due next month. Democrats have pressed the Senate's Republican leaders to solicit testimony at the trial from Trump's top lieutenants like Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, and John Bolton, Trump's former national security adviser. "If President Trump thinks he should not be impeached, he should be not scared to put forward his own witnesses," US Senator Amy Klobuchar said. READ: Impeached Trump says Democrats 'consumed with hatred'With deep and widening partisan divisions in the United States, Biden made the case for the importance of Democrats being able to work with Republicans. "I refuse to accept the notion - as some on this stage do - that we can never never get to a place where we have cooperation again. If that's the case, we are dead as a country," Biden said. "If anyone has reason to be angry with the Republicans and not want to cooperate it's me," Biden added. "They have attacked me and my son and my family. I have no love. But the fact is, we have to be able to get things done." ![]() The debate was the sixth in the race to pick a Democratic challenger to Trump in the November 2020 election. The seven candidates taking part were the fewest since the debates began in the summer. But the debate's timing, coming a week before the holidays and amid the impeachment fireworks in Washington, could reduce the audience and the benefits for the Democrats as they seek a boost ahead of the first state nominating contest in Iowa on Feb 3. The race for the Democratic presidential nomination remains up for grabs seven weeks before the first votes are cast in Iowa. There is a three-way battle at the top of national polls among Biden, Sanders and Warren, with South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg rising to lead some polls in early voting states. The number of candidates on stage was narrowed from 10 last month in Georgia, and 12 in October, by tougher polling and fundraising eligibility requirements. In a party that prides itself on its diversity, the debate lineup has been criticized for being nearly all-white - Asian-American entrepreneur Andrew Yang is the only minority candidate to qualify. "It's both an honor and a disappointment to be the only candidate of color on the stage," Yang said. Killed firefighters identified as ScoMo cuts his holiday short - 3AW Posted: 19 Dec 2019 09:31 PM PST Scott Morrison has cut his family holiday short after two volunteer firefighters died while fighting the devastating NSW blaze. Geoffrey Keaton, 32 and Andrew O'Dwyer, 36 died when their truck rolled as they were fighting bushfires at Buxton, south-west of Sydney, overnight. The NSW Rural Fire Service said the vehicle was travelling in a convoy during firefighting operations when it hit a tree. Both men were fathers to young children, pictured in photos released by the RFS. "The service's thoughts are with all the firefighter's family, friends and fellow brigade members," the RFS said in a station. Two other firefighters have been placed in induced comas in hospital after suffering burns in a separate incident yesterday afternoon. Hours later, Prime Minister Morrison declared he would return home to Australia as soon as possible. The timing of his holiday has been criticised on social media, and Mr Morrison said he "deeply regrets" any offence. "Over the course of the past week I have been taking leave with my family," Mr Morrison said in a statement this morning. "Our leave was brought forward due to the need to cancel our scheduled leave in January because of our official government visit to India and Japan. "I deeply regret any offence caused to any of the many Australians affected by the terrible bushfires by my taking leave with family at this time. "I have been receiving regular updates on the bushfires disaster as well as the status of the search and treatment of the victims of the White Island tragedy. The Commonwealth's responsibilities have been well managed by the Acting Prime Minister, Minister Littleproud and Minister Payne. "Given the most recent tragic events, I will be returning to Sydney as soon as can be arranged." Posted: 19 Dec 2019 09:27 PM PST Arsenal teen sensation Gabriel Martinelli has spoken of the trips he made to train with Manchester United and his interactions with players such as Paul Pogba before joining the Gunners. Previously a relative unknown, Martinelli was plucked from his native Brazil as Arsenal forked out £6 million ($8m) to sign him from Ituano in July. The 18-year-old has made great strides since his arrival in north London, scoring eight goals in all competitions for the Gunners, with Jadon Sancho the only teenager in Europe's top five leagues to have contributed more goals in 2019-20 thus far. Martinelli, though, had previously spent time at United's Carrington training ground, and revealed that he spoke briefly with Pogba during one of his trips from South America. "There was a project between Ituano and Manchester United, and they always took a player. And I always came for these trips," he told DAZN. "I could neither speak English nor French, but he [Pogba] said 'tudo bem' (a common Portuguese greeting) and took the picture with me nicely, he was super humble. "Those training days were super important for me to adapt to the style of play, the players and how fast the game is here." Martinell's arrival at Arsenal came as something of a surprise given his low profile, particularly with the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Nicolas Pepe and Kieran Tierney being targeted by then-manager Unai Emery. And the player himself admits that he wasted no time in agreeing to join the beaten Europa League finalists despite there being other offers on the table. "I remember we played against Guarani, we won 2-1, and my agent called me. He said 'you have to decide, so what?'. Then he said it was Arsenal. Then you think, one of the best clubs in Europe. I said yes, I couldn't refuse. "There were some approaches, but Arsenal came in strong, and I made the right choice to be here." Despite being born in Sao Paulo and having represented Brazil at Under-23 level, Martinelli is also eligible to represent Italy at international level through his father. As reported by Goal in October, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is attempting to convince the youngster to switch his allegiance to the Azzurri as Roberto Mancini looks to add further young talent to his ranks. But Martinelli - who spent time training with Brazil's squad ahead of the 2019 Copa America - insists he is yet to make a decision on his international future, though he suggested that it would be a "dream" to represent the country of his birth. "I'm Brazilian, of course everyone wants to play with that yellow shirt, listen to their people singing. But I can play for Italy too. "I have nothing decided. Of course I want to play for Brazil, but I haven't defined it yet. It can be one or the other." Martinelli is likely to be in action on Saturday as Arsenal travel to Goodison Park to face Everton, with the Gunners set to appoint Mikel Arteta as Emery's permanent replacement ahead of the clash. At more than 600 locations across the country, from Arkansas to Colorado to New York, massive crowds gathered to demand that Trump be impeached and removed for abusing the power of the presidency and other offenses. "Trump did it. He admitted to it. The House confirmed it. And now he'll be impeached for it," Ezra Levin, co-executive director of Indivisible, said in a statement late Tuesday. "After tomorrow's House vote, Indivisible will focus our grassroots power on ensuring Trump's Senate allies don't get away with a sham trial and conspiratorial cover-up." MoveOn, which joined Indivisible and other advocacy groups in organizing the demonstrations, tweeted that "across the nation tonight, hundreds of thousands said with one voice that it's time to impeach and remove Trump."
According to an analysis by the Washington Post, the Democrat-controlled House has enough votes to approve the articles of impeachment against Trump without any Republican support. "Trump will be impeached if the House passes one or both articles by a simple majority (That means House Democrats need 216 votes given the current makeup of the House — there are a handful of vacant seats)," the Post reported Tuesday night. "A majority of House lawmakers have indicated their support for both articles of impeachment." Ahead of his likely impeachment, Trump on Tuesday lashed out at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). "It could not be more clear that Trump is a clear and present danger to our democracy — and that he must be impeached and removed," Sean Eldridge, founder of advocacy group Stand Up America, said in a statement. "That's why hundreds of thousands of Americans are taking to the streets… to demand Congress remove him from office." US Congress approves massive funding bills to avert government shutdowns - The Straits Times Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:31 PM PST ![]() WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - The United States Senate, rushing to meet a looming deadline, approved and sent to President Donald Trump a US$1.4 trillion (S$1.9 trillion) package of fiscal 2020 spending Bills that would end prospect of government shutdowns at week's end when temporary funding expires. By strong bipartisan margins and with White House backing, the Senate passed the two gigantic funding Bills for government programmes through Sept 30. Mr Trump is expected to sign both Bills into law before a midnight Friday deadline. Notably, the Pentagon would get US$738 billion for military activities - US$22 billion more than last year. Investments in domestic programmes range from child nutrition and college grants to research on gun violence for the first time in decades and money for affordable housing programmes that Mr Trump had opposed. The legislation also contains a series of new initiatives, including funding for Mr Trump's military Space Force, raising the age for purchasing tobacco products to 21 from the current 18, and repealing some taxes that were intended to fund the Affordable Care Act health insurance, popularly known as Obamacare. About a year ago, the US government plunged into a record-long, 35-day partial shutdown after Congress refused to give Mr Trump the money he wanted to build a US-Mexico border wall - one that he previously insisted Mexico would finance. This time around, money for border security would stay level at US$1.37 billion, far below what Mr Trump had sought. Earlier this year, angered by Congress' refusal to give him the wall money, Mr Trump declared an "emergency" and took funds from other accounts appropriated by Congress and used them to build part of the border wall that was a central promise of his 2016 presidential campaign. Congressional and White House negotiators reached a deal on the spending bills to avert government shutdowns just days before Washington plunged into a different kind of political crisis: the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approving articles of impeachment against Mr Trump, a Republican. With Democrats and Republicans trying to demonstrate that they can get at least some legislative work done amid Mr Trump's impeachment, the administration and Democrats also worked out differences over a US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement, making for a flurry of pre-Christmas break action in Washington. The US$1.4 trillion in spending for so-called "discretionary" programmes, up from US$1.36 trillion last year, is separate from"mandatory" programmes like Social Security retirement benefits, which are automatically funded. The higher spending, coupled with tax cuts enacted in 2017, are contributing to widening budget deficits. The government spent US$984 billion more than it took in during the last fiscal year that ended on Sept 30, and the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office projects annual budget deficits averaging US$1.2 trillion over the next decade. A rapidly rising US national debt now stands at US$23.1 trillion, a level that some experts fear could eventually hobble the economy. Nancy Pelosi Hasn’t Had Time For Donald Trump’s “Sick,” “Ridiculous” Letter - The Mary Sue Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:31 PM PST Donald Trump sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a letter Tuesday, which basically reads like five and a half pages of angry tweets. On the eve of the House impeachment vote, Trump used the letter (which you can read in full here) to rail against Democrats. In the letter, Trump accuses Democratic lawmakers of violating the Constitution (they're not) and their oath of office (still nope) for "turning a policy disagreement between two branches of government into an impeachable offense." (That's not at all what this is. Asking a foreign government to investigate your political opponents is not a "policy disagreement," nor is obstructing a Congressional investigation.) Here are some other ramblings from Trump's letter: –"More due process was afforded to those accused in the Salem Witch Trials." –"You have developed a full-fledged case of what many in the media call Trump Derangement Syndrome and sadly, you will never get over it!" –"It is a terrible thing you are doing, but you will have to live with it, not I!" –"Even worse than offending the Founding Fathers, you are offending Americans of faith by continually saying you pray for the President when you know this statement is not true, unless it is meant in a negative sense." (I don't know how Trump knows for a fact what Pelosi does and doesn't pray for, but he seems to have some inside information here.) –"You conducted a fake investigation upon the democratically elected President of the United States, and you are doing it yet again." (He seems to be referring to the Mueller investigation which wasn't conducted by the House and also definitely wasn't fake. It resulted in dozens of indictments and prison sentences for a number of Trump's former aides.) Here's my favorite line, though: "One hundred years from now, when people look back at this affair, I want them to understand it, and learn from it, so that it can never happen to another President again." Because … same. That's the point of impeachment–to make sure future leaders don't think they can get away with these sorts of abuses. So what does Nancy Pelosi think of the letter? Turns out, she hasn't even read it. She's a bit busy after all, what with getting ready to impeach Trump and all. "It's ridiculous," she told CNN's Manu Raju Tuesday. "I mean, I haven't really fully read it, we've been working. I've seen the essence of it though and it's really sick."
Not reading long screeds written by the president is self-care and self-preservation, IMO. Why Pelosi hasn’t sent Trump impeachment articles to the Senate - Vox.com Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:31 PM PST ![]() With President Donald Trump now officially impeached, the House and Senate are at an unexpected standoff over what will happen next. That's due to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's surprising announcement late Wednesday that she would not yet take her expected next steps: selecting "impeachment managers" to make her case and officially transmitting the articles of impeachment to the Senate. At the moment, that doesn't mean too much, since Congress is leaving Washington for the holidays and the Senate wasn't going to begin an impeachment trial until January anyway. Still, it leaves the anticipated next step of the impeachment saga — Trump's Senate trial, which was expected to start (and end) in January — in at least some doubt. Pelosi said she was hesitant because she doubts that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will hold a fair trial, based on comments he made last week about being in lockstep with the White House. So, she reiterated Thursday morning, she decided not to act until "we see the process that is set forth in the Senate." Meanwhile, McConnell suggested in his own remarks on Thursday that what happens next is really up to Pelosi. He claimed her reluctance to transmit the articles was an admission that her case was weak. And, he said, "If the speaker ever gets her House in order, that mess will be dumped in the Senate's lap." And Trump, who has been eager for the Senate to acquit him, isn't happy about all this, as he made clear in a tweet Thursday morning:
The drama is only increasing, as the New York Times's Maggie Haberman reported that Trump's lawyers are "looking at various options for proceeding" with the trial in the Senate anyway, even if the House doesn't send over the articles. Trump's lawyers are even reviewing whether he was technically impeached if the articles have yet to be sent to the Senate, Bloomberg's Jennifer Jacobs and Justin Sink reported. So, what's going on? In part, this is clearly an attempt by Pelosi to try to get McConnell and Senate Republicans to make some concessions to Democrats about how Trump's trial should be run — specifically with regard to calling witnesses for testimony. The thinking behind this is that holding up the process might actually give Democrats leverage — because Trump, now that he's been impeached, desperately wants an acquittal in the Senate. (And his irate reaction on Twitter this morning proves that to be true.) That's the idea, but how it plays out will depend on several factors. Will McConnell, the actual key decision-maker here, budge? If he doesn't, will Pelosi keep holding out? And will Senate Republicans try to respond to Pelosi's procedural gamesmanship in kind? Once the House of Representatives impeaches the president, two things are supposed to happen next.
Both are traditionally pro forma steps on the way to the start of the Senate trial. Except that on Wednesday night, Pelosi suddenly suggested things won't be so simple. She would not, she said, name impeachment managers or send the articles over "until we see what the process is on the Senate side." And on Thursday, the House announced it wouldn't hold any votes on a resolution regarding the appointment of impeachment managers until after the holidays — that means January 7 at the earliest. The justification Pelosi initially offered was that she wanted to wait so she could get a better sense of the Senate's plans and whether they'd be fair. She raised one concern (McConnell's comments) and raised one possible solution (witnesses). The concern was about statements McConnell made on Fox News last week. "Everything I do during this, I'm coordinating with the White House counsel," McConnell said December 12. "There will be no difference between the president's position and our position as to how to handle this." Democrats found these comments appalling and asserted that the fix was in. Pelosi cited those remarks Wednesday night, saying McConnell had made clear there wouldn't be a fair trial. What, exactly, could address this concern? "It's up to the senators to make their own decision, working together" on how to run the trial, Pelosi said. "Hopefully in recognition that there are witnesses the president withheld from us, there are documents the president withheld from us, and I would hope that information would be available to go to a trial, to the next step." This is an apparent reference to a request by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for testimony from four current or former administration officials: acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, former national security adviser John Bolton, White House aide Robert Blair, and Office of Management and Budget official Michael Duffey. (All of them have knowledge of Trump's hold on Ukraine aid.) Indeed, the strategy of passing and withholding the impeachment articles seems to have caught Democrats' eye after Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe proposed it in a Washington Post op-ed days earlier. This was the tactical justification Tribe offered: that a delay "could strengthen" Democrats' "hand in bargaining over trial rules with McConnell because of McConnell's and Trump's urgent desire to get this whole business behind them." Other Democrats have also floated further justifications for withholding the impeachment articles. For instance, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) told Politico's Kyle Cheney that a trial delay would let the House continue its investigation, strengthen its case, and further contest matters in court. And Brian Beutler of Crooked Media has argued that the impeachment push should be slowed down and expanded to other topics. But it's unclear whether Pelosi shares these objectives. Previously, it has seemed that she wants to get impeachment over with — not to expand it to other topics or to spend months on court battles. It's possible her thinking may have shifted on this, but that certainly would be a change. Just one week after McConnell announced there would be "no difference between the president's position and our position as to how to handle" impeachment, a difference became evident. Trump responded to Pelosi's move by insisting that the Senate could move forward with the trial and his acquittal whether Pelosi okays it or not. The Senate, Trump tweeted, "can set a date and put this whole SCAM into default if they refuse to show up!" And that may not be entirely far-fetched. Ross Garber, an attorney who's an expert on impeachment, has argued that the Senate can set a deadline for the appointment of impeachment managers and the transmission of the articles. But McConnell, who did not seem inclined toward that approach, gave a more cautious response. According to NBC's Geoff Bennett, McConnell said Thursday that it was "beyond me" how Pelosi and Schumer "think withholding the articles of impeachment gives them leverage." He added: "Frankly, I'm not anxious to have the trial," and that if Pelosi "thinks her case is so weak she doesn't want to send it over, throw me into that briar patch." Now, neither Trump nor McConnell showed any indication they were in the mood to make concessions to Democrats regarding witnesses and the trial. But there was a clear discrepancy. McConnell wants to yawn at Pelosi's move and let his Senate spend the time doing other things. Trump, though, wants Republicans to hit back with some procedural radicalism of their own so they can clear his name more quickly. It's not the first time Trump and McConnell have disagreed on impeachment. Trump hoped to use the trial to call witnesses such as Hunter Biden or Adam Schiff, to let his legal team grill them. But McConnell argued privately that this would be a mistake, that there wasn't support for this among moderate Republican senators, and that the better approach would be to have no witnesses at all and just get to a quick acquittal. McConnell reportedly brought Trump around on this, though, so he could do the same with regards to Pelosi's position. It's entirely possible that this is much ado about not very much. McConnell and Schumer met Thursday to discuss how the trial would work. It is possible they will reach some kind of agreement that Pelosi deems sufficient, and that we proceed on schedule to a January trial in the Senate. Also, some tea-leaf readers interpreted a newer set of comments from Pelosi on Thursday as somewhat downplaying what she said on Wednesday night. As CNN's Manu Raju, Ted Barrett, and Jeremy Herb wrote:
This could be mainly a bluff, or a bit of mischief, from Pelosi. She has room to do this because the trial isn't going to start anyway because of the holidays. But she may think that seriously delaying the trial with a procedural trick could be too tough to defend. Still, the issue of witnesses could be difficult to reach an agreement on. McConnell's private position is that he wants no witnesses. Publicly, he's taken the position that any decision on witnesses should be put off until after the trial begins, which is how the Senate handled it in 1999. But Schumer and Pelosi are demanding a commitment on witnesses now. Which leads us to the second possibility, that Pelosi isn't bluffing. That she, and Democrats, should be and are happy to delay the trial if they can't reach a deal they find sufficient — because no trial means no acquittal. Indeed, Tribe argued that impeachment itself is enough, and that McConnell's trial would be so compromised it would "fail to render a meaningful verdict." Still, an indefinite holdout by Pelosi won't necessarily be the end of the story either. Democrats will surely be hammered for playing political games with impeachment (though they will try to argue it's McConnell who's inappropriately politicized the process). The tactic could also backfire by annoying the swing-state and Trump-critical GOP senators whose votes Democrats would need for any impeachment measure. McConnell could stick to his current position, too, and say he's fine not having a trial. (That would be nice for his own senators facing tough reelection fights, like Susan Collins of Maine and Cory Gardner of Colorado). Or McConnell could be driven toward Trump's position and attempt to set a deadline or move forward with a trial, rather than given in to Pelosi's demands. Of course, none of this is likely to change the actual outcome of any trial. It takes 67 votes to remove a president, and Democrats only have 47 senators — 20 Republicans would have to defect. (Zero did in the House.) But it has created some intriguing last-minute drama over how the trial will look — and whether there will be one at all. Williams' multi-hyphenate resume includes the hits "Save the Best for Last," the Oscar-, Grammy- and Golden Globe-winning "Colors of the Wind" from Disney's "Pocahontas" and "Love Is" with Brian McKnight and film and TV roles including "Eraser," "Soul Food," "Dance With Me," "Shaft," "Ugly Betty," "Desperate Housewives" and "Daytime Divas." Williams also is known as the first African American woman to be crowned Miss America in 1983. Her crown was revoked after it was discovered that she had posed nude, but the Miss America Organization would reinstate her in its record books more than two decades later. Williams, 56, recently chatted about her music and TV success, being an advocate for equal rights and her celebrity crush ahead of her two holiday performances in downtown Spokane: You're headlining the Holiday Pops Concert with the Spokane Symphony on Dec. 21-22. Are you ready for the cold weather and snow? I live in New York, so I'm used to it. I'll have the proper gear. I've never been to Spokane, but I've heard that the Fox Theater is spectacular. I'll have to be extra fancy to match the décor. How much time will you have for rehearsal? We'll have a run-through the day of the first performance with the orchestra. The conductor and my musical director have been swapping emails about the setlist and times. We have so many Christmas songs and charts to adjust. I take the stage for the first time about 40 minutes into the first half, then there's an intermission, then I perform for about 60 minutes. Speaking of performing, you can sing pop, dance, R&B, adult contemporary, holiday, Latin, gospel and jazz. Do you have a favorite musical genre to perform? Hmmm … I like to perform what makes the most sense at the time, if that makes sense. I've had the same band with me for 22 years, and we can bring it hard. Subscriber audiences love show tunes, so, for a Broadway set, I'll adjust. I strive to make a connection – I'm a chameleon who sings music and hopes to make people happy. What is your favorite holiday song? The most effective songs need to be done beautifully and not be average. "Silent Night" always makes people well up. The melody is beautiful, and the tone and ambience are gorgeous. I love "Save the Best for Last." Actually, I love "Colors of the Wind," as well. What is your favorite song among your hits and catalog? When "Colors of the Wind" won the Academy Award in 2006, I will never forget that it won that night. And with "Save the Best for Last" at the Grammys, I was pregnant with my son who was eight weeks from coming. When Eric Clapton won, he acknowledged me for not getting the No. 1 spot with his song because of mine. I love the melody, and the fact that this opportunity then became a hit made it sweeter. Fans will always remember you as Wilhelmina Slater in "Ugly Betty." What has been your favorite role in television or film? Oh for sure Wilhelmina. She was written so well. We never knew where the show was going and what was going to happen. At our table reads, we would be like, "What?!" It was thrilling and exciting, and we would crack each other up. The cast was truly an ensemble. It felt like a Broadway ensemble. We were in it together working hard. We spent hours and hours together, and there was a genuine generosity. Another extraordinary experience for me was "Kiss of the Spider Woman." We made it completely different and our own. You are known for being a strong advocate for equal rights, especially with minorities and the gay community. Please speak to your advocacy. I was lucky because my parents are both music teachers, and they introduced me to the big city and Broadway shows and Alvin Ailey Dance – they introduced me to the arts. Mom had gay friends, and they were very elegant and had partners. Dad was friendly and knew the issues. Gay men have been a part of my life as an actor and dancer – cast mates and going to school in the 1970s and 1980s. I've had many friends die from AIDS over the years. I'm really fortunate to have had so many relationships that have touched me and are triumphant. At an early age, I was shown an example of equality, and that has been part of my human experience. What advice would you give a young woman today who wants to follow in your footsteps? Don't follow in my footsteps! Know your skill set – know your strengths – and go from there. Be involved in school and programs, have a mentor and improve your skills. I have been lucky to have had a supportive family and community. Please tell me about your current and longtime celebrity crush, Sting. (Laughs) Last Christmas, I sang with him again during Rob Mathes' holiday concert. I've been a hardcore fan ever since "Sister Moon." He's an incredible human being and musician, and he's still hot! Do you have any resolutions for the New Year? I will continue to go for more, and that doesn't mean I'm not happy where I am. Bring on more challenges. Give me more because I'm ready to do more. How a Top Antitrust Official Helped T-Mobile and Sprint Merge - The New York Times Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:34 PM PST ![]() WASHINGTON — As the $26 billion blockbuster merger between T-Mobile and Sprint teetered this summer, Makan Delrahim, the head of the Justice Department's antitrust division, labored to rescue it behind the scenes, according to text messages revealed this week in a lawsuit to block the deal. Mr. Delrahim connected company executives with the F.C.C. and members of Congress. And he gave executives insight into the thinking of Ajit Pai, the chairman of the F.C.C. who would also have to approve the merger. He is "open and willing" to discussions about the deal, Mr. Delrahim said in one text message in June, a month before regulators blessed the transaction. The messages between Mr. Delrahim and the executives involved in structuring one of the telecom industry's most significant mergers in generations provide a rare inside look at the hands-on work the Justice Department's top antitrust official undertook to shape the deal. While it is not unusual for a law enforcement official to work behind the scenes to help companies overcome antitrust concerns, efforts like the one undertaken by Mr. Delrahim are almost always hidden from view. The text messages show that he played a crucial role in bringing together top executives of T-Mobile, Sprint and another company, Dish, for negotiations. The Justice Department has said it would not have approved the merger without the emergence of another competitor like Dish. The Obama administration rejected an earlier proposed merger between the companies, and it remains deeply unpopular with some consumer groups who fear it will increase prices for Americans, especially in rural areas. Mr. Delrahim oversaw the often hostile talks between the companies, while pulling strings to get lawmakers and other regulators on board. "Had a generally good chat with the chairman," Mr. Delrahim wrote to Charles Ergen, the chief executive of Dish, the company that would prove crucial to the deal's passage. The following day he encouraged Mr. Ergen to lobby lawmakers to urge Mr. Pai to approve new deal terms that would give Mr. Ergen more time to build out a competitive telecom business. Mr. Ergen did so. He told Mr. Delrahim that he had "very good" meetings in Washington and that he talked to Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, about the deal, according to the text messages. When asked about the text messages, a Justice Department spokesman said that "the Antitrust Division is proud of its work in reviewing this important merger on behalf of the American consumer," but declined to comment further. T-Mobile and Dish declined to comment on the messages, which were submitted as evidence in a legal challenge to the merger led by the New York and California state attorneys general. Sprint didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. The messages also show that SoftBank, the Japanese conglomerate that owns the majority of Sprint, discussed lending Dish money to buy the assets it needed to become a telecom company. In such an arrangement, SoftBank would essentially be financing a competitor to its own company, Sprint. But SoftBank also stood to lose financially if a Sprint-T-Mobile merger did not happen. SoftBank declined to comment on Thursday. In one strained exchange, Mr. Ergen told John Legere, the chief executive of T-Mobile, that he was still working to get terms of a deal done, pending board approval and "any other issues from our/your team." "And waiting on Softbank to finance the deal?" Mr. Legere wrote. Mr. Ergen said publicly this week that several potential lenders had emerged to help his company buy assets, including JPMorgan Chase and SoftBank. Sprint and T-Mobile, the third- and fourth-largest wireless companies, announced their latest merger plans in April 2018. The carriers promised their union would allow them to combine resources and bring the next generation of wireless broadband, known as 5G, for fifth generation, to rural America. They would have a combined 80 million United States subscribers. The Justice Department announced its approval of the deal in July, citing the creation of a fourth and new competitor in Dish, which would buy assets from Sprint and T-Mobile to become a telecom company. In a parallel review, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission announced it planned to approve the deal weeks later. The merger is being challenged in court by several states and cannot close until that lawsuit is resolved. State attorneys general in New York and California are unconvinced that Dish will provide true market competition. "Dish is a struggling satellite TV firm with no experience running a mobile wireless business — and no current mobile wireless business," Paula Blizzard, California's deputy attorney general, said on a call with journalists this month. "We cannot count on Dish one day in the future somehow growing into a viable wireless company equal to Sprint's reach today." Mr. Delrahim was pressured to block the merger throughout the department's review. Several Democratic lawmakers, consumer groups and state attorneys general said the deal would harm consumers by reducing the number of national wireless carriers to three from four. The reduction in competition would most likely lead to higher consumer wireless bills, the critics warned. To salvage the deal, the companies came up with a solution: bring in Dish Network to buy some of their wireless assets to form another competitor and maintain four national mobile carriers. Mr. Delrahim told reporters at a press event in July that the deal would not have passed muster without Dish, which had agreed to buy Sprint's prepaid wireless service, Boost, for $5 billion, as well as other assets from T-Mobile. "We were prepared to sue to block the deal," Mr. Delrahim said in July, when he announced his approval. In texts sent this May and June, Mr. Delrahim helped coordinate meetings between Mr. Ergen, Mr. Legere and Marcelo Claure, the chief operating officer of SoftBank and the chairman of the Sprint board, as they negotiated asset sales to Dish. "I anticipate being part of the meeting and then leaving it to you guys to hash out details as needed," Mr. Delrahim wrote in one text to Mr. Ergen about a meeting with Mr. Legere. The telecom executives gave Mr. Delrahim regular updates on their often difficult negotiations. Both T-Mobile and Sprint executives were frustrated at times with Mr. Ergen, who told them he needed time to get his board to approve aspects of the deal. "Why do you always play games. You got a deal of a lifetime and don't blow it," Mr. Claure told Mr. Ergen. "And you control your board." Mr. Legere and Mr. Ergen were sometimes hard to wrangle. At one point, when Dish sought funding from SoftBank, Mr. Legere was indignant. "You've crossed the line," he wrote. "For full disclosure (which may be a new term to you) I have told Makan I don't believe you are serious about doing a deal." Mr. Delrahim seemed aware of the friction. In one set of messages, he invited Mr. Ergen to a meeting the next day with Mr. Legere and Mike Sievert, the president of T-Mobile, in his conference room at the Justice Department. "2pm confirmed," Mr. Delrahim wrote. "I have not told John and Mike the meeting is w you yet, I will tell them in the AM." But the day the meeting was scheduled, Mr. Delrahim gave Mr. Ergen an update about a long talk he had held with Mr. Legere, Mr. Sievert and Mr. Claure. "John is going to reach out to you," Mr. Delrahim wrote. "May make good sense for you all to meet alone at 2, and then we all meet later today? I will make myself available." Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:16 PM PST Cicely Tyson is a living example of the tale that "black don't crack." The legendary actress turns 95-years-old today and remains one of the top billing actresses of our time. Ms. Tyson is booked and busy and shows that age is just a number. The map that she set forth has laid the path for some of the greatest black actresses of today, including women like Viola Davis, Kerry Washington and Taraji P. Henson who all held the lead roles in prime time shows throughout the past decade. She is an icon in the industry and the godmother of Tyler Perry's son. In celebration of Ms. Tyson's continuous legacy, here's a look back at her a few of her most profound roles throughout her career. ![]() Sounder (1972)Her role was relatively small but it was a foreshadow of the greatness that was to come. Based on the children's book of the same title, Sounder chronicles the story of a sharecropper family enduring poverty and hunger during the Great Depression. Ms. Tyson warmed two awards – the National Board of Review Award and the National Society of Film Critics for her work. She was also nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress for her role as the mother/matriarch of the family. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974)In the role that earned her an Emmy Award, The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman is considered Ms. Tyson's breakout role. The CBS movie told the story of a woman who was born into slavery on a Louisiana plantation – only to survive and ultimately become a central part of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. She showcased her acting chops by portraying the lead character from young adulthood into old age. She told the Hollywood Reporter in a 2019 interview why the role was significant to her, saying, "I never knew any of my grandparents," she said. "And to me, Jane was the grandparent who might have been." Roots (1977)The groundbreaking mini series shook American households by telling the story of Kunta Kinte, an African native who was sold into the slave trade after being abducted from his village and taken to the U.S. Ms. Tyson starred as Kinte's mom, Binta. She recalled how she prepared for the role when speaking with Oprah Winfrey 40 years after the series premiered. "I met Alex Haley after he finished writing the book and we spent a lot of time together," she said, "Because all I have to do is find someone who has something to say that will enrich my life and they can't get rid of mex And so, I was given the role of Kunta Kinte's mom." She also spent time in Africa on a personal journey to delve into her character. Madea's Family Reunion (2006)A large gap between where she started and where she is now but her role in Madea's Family Reunion gave a much needed lesson to the millennials of today. As Aunt Myrtle, Ms. Tyson gave a proud lesson on relationships when she gave a word of advice her niece who was secretly battling domestic violence. "Love is many things, "she began. "It's varied. One thing it is not and can never be is unsure." Another thought provoking scene was her character scolding the younger generation in her family for their inappropriate disposition in front of their elders and her demand for change. It went down as one of the most iconic scenes in a Tyler Perry film. Ms. Tyson has led a life full of purposeful work. Happiest of birthdays. You look not a day over 50! スター・ウォーズ「三部作」構成は、もうやめる? - GIZMODO JAPAN Posted: 19 Dec 2019 03:22 AM PST スター・ウォーズ「三部作」構成は、もうやめる? - GIZMODO JAPAN ![]() 「フォーマット変更するよー!」
2019-12-19 09:30:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiWmh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lmdpem1vZG8uanAvMjAxOS8xMi9rYXRobGVlbi1rZW5uZWR5LXNheXMtZnV0dXJlLXN0YXItd2Fycy1maWxtcy13aWxsLW1vdmUuaHRtbNIBXmh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lmdpem1vZG8uanAvYW1wLzIwMTkvMTIva2F0aGxlZW4ta2VubmVkeS1zYXlzLWZ1dHVyZS1zdGFyLXdhcnMtZmlsbXMtd2lsbC1tb3ZlLmh0bWw?oc=5 |
