'The Good Place' Actress Jameela Jamil Reveals the Heartbreaking Reason She Once Stayed At A Party For Only 10 Minutes - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 11:38 PM PST

We may look at celebrities as perfect, but there's a lot more under the surface. Jameela Jamil, star of The Good Place, has taken it upon herself to be one of the many actors and actresses these days who are using social media to share their roughest moments. Read on to learn about one of hers.

Jameela Jamil stars in 'The Good Place'

Jameela Jamil
Jameela Jamil | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic

If you're familiar with Jamil, chances are it's because you've seen her on one very popular TV show. She stars in The Good Place, a sitcom that currently airs on NBC. And if you haven't heard of it, you're in for quite a treat.

Jamil portrays Tahani Al-Jamil, one of four central humans who find themselves together in the afterlife. However, they soon begin to realize that not all is as it seems. Jamil stars alongside Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, and a few faces that a newer on the scene, like hers.

She got her start in the UK as a presenter

Though The Good Place is technically Jamil's first acting gig, she has been a part of the entertainment industry for many years. Jamil got her start as the host of the Channel 4 morning show Freshly Squeezed, and her career only expanded from them.

Jamil was known primarily as a radio presenter, hosting the show The Official Chart on BBC Radio 1. She also once hosted a reality show called Playing It Straight on E4. So she spent quite a bit of time in the spotlight even before moving to the U.S.

Jamil has been open about her health struggles

Jamil has always been open with her followers on social media. She's spoken up about her health issues, from her breast cancer scare to her mental health struggles, and everything in between. And these aren't always easy topics to broach.

The actor's honesty is refreshing. Jamil even took to social media on World Mental Health Day, where she shared that she once tried to take her own life, and suffered from PTSD in the aftermath. "You have nothing to hide or be ashamed of. I feel you. I've been there," she wrote.

She shared a photo from 2009

In addition to those previously listed, Jamil also suffered from an eating disorder and body dysmorphia, which can be very common in show business and beyond. The actor decided to share a very personal moment from her past on social media, a little over ten years after it occurred.

"I didn't want to go to the event because I was convinced that I was 'too fat' and that I would be publicly shamed the next day," she said of the occasion documented in the photo, which was a party during London Fashion Week in Sept. 2009. "I was so weak, I only managed to stay for 10 minutes."

Jamil is championing an important cause

Because of her own struggles with accepting her body, Jamil has taken to fiercely advocating for body neutrality. She created the website I Weigh, which has grown significantly since she first launched it as an Instagram page.

Jamil has especially focused on what celebrities can do to help curb this issue with the public. She pushes back against famous people like the Kardashians, who have used their platforms to promote harmful items like weight loss teas and appetite suppressant lollipops.

Bruins score 4 goals in 1st period, top Capitals 7-3 - Boston.com

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 11:08 PM PST

BOSTON (AP) — Brad Marchand and Anders Bjork scored 27 seconds apart in a four-goal first period that chased Braden Holtby, and Charlie Coyle added a short-handed goal to help the Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 7-3 on Monday night.

Tuukka Rask made 39 saves to snap his five-game losing streak as the Bruins opened a 5-0 lead and sat on it while the Capitals outshot them 34-6 over the last two periods.

Boston was deprived of another score when Washington knocked the puck into its own net during a delayed penalty, but the officials had inadvertently whistled the play dead.

Patrice Bergeron had two goals, including an empty-netter that made it 7-3, and David Krejci had two assists and an empty-netter. Jake DeBrusk also scored for Boston, which stopped a three-game skid. The Capitals had won eight straight games in Boston and 16 of the previous 17 matchups overall.

Boston led 5-0 when Alex Ovechkin scored with about five minutes gone in the second period, and Lars Eller deflected one past Rask as a power play expired late in the third to make it 5-2. After Krejci's empty netter, Garnet Hathaway took advantage of a Bruins lapse to make it 6-3.

Holtby allowed four goals on 11 shots for Washington, which had won 10 of its previous 12 games. Ilya Samsonov replaced him to start the second period and stopped three of the four shots he faced in almost 38 minutes.

The Metropolitan Division-leading Capitals had won each of the two previous meetings this season, but the Atlantic-leading Bruins owned this one from the start. DeBrusk scored about five minutes in, and then Marchand made it 2-0 at 13:29 on the rebound of Pastrnak's shot.

Before the announcement could be completed, Coyle brought the puck out from behind Holtby and Bjork slapped it in to make it 3-0. Bergeron tipped in a shot from Pastrnak on a 5-on-3 advantage with a minute left in the period to give Boston a 4-0 lead.

The Bruins almost had another goal on one of the odder plays of the season.

Krejci was called for tripping Ovechkin behind the Washington net, but before Boston could gain possession the Capitals knocked the puck into their own goal. A replay confirmed an inadvertent whistle blew the play dead before the puck went in.

No matter. Coyle scored a short-handed goal on the ensuing power play to make it 5-0. It was the 100th goal of his career.

NOTES: Bruins D Zdeno Chara missed his first game of the season to have surgery on the jaw he injured during the Stanley Cup Final. According to the Bruins, the metal plate and screws doctors had inserted have become infected, so they will be removed. Chara hoped to be back for Friday's game against Buffalo. … Holtby was pulled for the second time this season. … Boston D Torey Krug left after a hit by Tom Wilson and did not return. Wilson received a 10-minute misconduct penalty for fighting with 6:34 left in the game.

H5×WIN=W1N 2man Live - BARKS

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 11:04 PM PST

後悔なんてないと歌う「SWAG OUT」から始まり、 「DAYBREAK」から「Rock That Bea」へ。 そして「Talk to Me」へ。

WIN=W1Nの最後のパートは、「Psycho Breaker」と「We Walk On」大いに盛り上げH5へバトンをタッチする。

Later school start times improves sleep for students: Study - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 10:14 PM PST

New European research has found that giving teenagers a more flexible start time at school could help them get more sleep.

Led by researchers at Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, the new study looked at 102 students aged 15 to 19 years old. The team monitored the participants' sleep for three weeks before introducing a new flexible start time at their school, which allowed them to choose between an 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. start each day, and six weeks after.

The teenagers were required to record their sleeping patterns each day, with 65 asked to use a daily diary, and 37 wearing a wrist device that measured movement and periods of activity and inactivity. At the end of the study, the participants reported their overall level of satisfaction and their ability to concentrate in class and while studying.

The findings, published in the journal Sleep, showed that at first, the students made little use of the new flexible schedule, and chose to start school later just twice a week, which surprised the researchers.

However, on the days they did the later start time, the students slept for more than an hour longer than usual, regardless of their gender, grade, chronotype (whether they were naturally an 'early bird' or 'night owl') which the researchers say shows the benefit of a later school start time.

The students also reported being very satisfied with the new schedule, with the vast majority saying they slept better and were better able to focus on their studies.

"Perhaps the very fact that one can decide for oneself when to get up in the morning is sufficient to break the cycle and reduce the pressure," said co-lead author Eva Winnebeck.

The authors added that "flexible systems are a viable alternative for implementing later school starts to improve teenage sleep," noting that actively encouraging students to make use of the later start time is also important.

Hong Kong police use tear gas, batons in Christmas Eve clashes with protesters - FRANCE 24 English

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 09:14 PM PST

Issued on: Modified:

Hong Kong riot police fired rounds of tear gas at thousands of protesters, many wearing masks and reindeer horns, after scuffles in shopping malls and in a prime tourist district as anti-government rallies escalated into chaos on Christmas Eve.

Advertising

Protesters inside the malls threw umbrellas and other objects at police who responded by beating some demonstrators with batons, with one pointing his gun at the crowd, but not firing.

Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters who had occupied the main roads and blocked traffic outside the malls and nearby luxury hotels, including the Peninsula, in the Tsim Sha Tsui tourist district of Kowloon.

There was a heavy police presence into the night with hundreds of officers standing guard on the roads as thousands of Christmas shoppers and tourists, some wearing Santa hats, looked on.

Many families with children had congregated in the same area to view the Christmas lights along the promenade, the spectacular backdrop of Hong Kong island on the opposite side of the harbour.

The protests in Chinese-ruled Hong Kong, now in their seventh month, have lost some of the scale and intensity of earlier violent confrontations. A peaceful rally this month still drew 800,000 people, according to organisers, showing strong support for the movement.

Scores of black-clad, mask-wearing protesters chanted slogans including "Revive Hong Kong, revolution of our time," and "Hong Kong independence" as they roamed the malls.

"Lots of people are shopping so it's a good opportunity to spread the message and tell people what we are fighting for," said Ken, an 18-year-old student.

"We fight for freedom, we fight for our future."

Protesters target coffee chain

Around 100 protesters trashed a Starbucks inside a mall called Mira Place, breaking the glass counters displaying pastries and spraying graffiti on the walls.

The coffee shop chain has been a common target of protesters after the daughter of the founder of Maxim's Caterers, which owns the local franchise, condemned the protesters at a U.N. human rights council in Geneva.

Demonstrators have previously defaced Starbucks around the city, daubing anti-China graffiti on its windows.

The Civil Human Rights Front, which has organised some of the biggest marches involving more than a million people, has applied to stage another march on New Year's Day.

Police have arrested more than 6,000 people since the protests escalated in June, including a large number during a protracted, violent siege at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in mid-November.

Many Hong Kong residents are angry at what they see as Beijing's meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

China denies interfering and says it is committed to the "one country, two systems" formula put in place at that time and has blamed foreign forces for fomenting unrest.

In a video posted on her Facebook page, Chief Executive Carrie Lam wished Hong Kong citizens "a peaceful and safe Merry Christmas".

Lam has so far refused to grant protesters' demands which include an independent inquiry into police behaviour and the implementation of full universal suffrage.

China hosts regional talks with North Korean threats on table - FRANCE 24 English

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 08:44 PM PST

Issued on: Modified:

China hosted the leaders of squabbling neighbours South Korea and Japan for their first official meeting in over a year on Tuesday, flexing its diplomatic muscle with America's two key Asian allies and seeking unity on how to deal with a belligerent North Korea.

Advertising

The gathering in the southwestern city of Chengdu was held with the clock ticking on a threatened "Christmas gift" from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that could reignite global tensions over the country's nuclear programme.

Kim has promised the unidentified "gift" – which analysts and US officials believe could be a provocative missile test – if Washington does not make concessions in their nuclear talks by the end of the year.

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that "we'll find out what the surprise is and we'll deal with it very successfully", joking that "maybe it's a present where he sends me a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test".

After the meeting with China, both Japan and South Korea urged the resumption of talks between Pyongyang and Washington – which have been largely deadlocked since a second summit between Trump and Kim in Hanoi collapsed at the start of this year.

The leaders of the three countries also promised to help promote dialogue to rid the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons.

Also on Tuesday, North Korean state media slammed Tokyo as a "political dwarf", saying North Korea's weapons tests "pose no threat" to Japan.

If the North fired an intercontinental ballistic missile in defiance of UN sanctions, it would contradict Trump's argument that he had succeeded in reducing risks from North Korea.

Former US national security adviser John Bolton, who was dismissed in September, on Monday criticised Trump's strategy and warned the North posed an immediate threat.

"The risk to US forces & our allies is imminent & more effective policy is required before NK has the technology to threaten the American homeland," tweeted Bolton.

South Korea, Japan leaders share first meeting in 15 months

The Tuesday gathering in China featured the first bilateral meeting between South Korea'n President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 15 months.

Ties between the two Asian leaders have hit rock bottom lately over trade issues and other disputes related to decades of bitter wrangling over Japan's 1910-1945 occupation of the Korean peninsula.

The United States has urged the pair to bury the hatchet – worried their poor relations were complicating diplomacy in Asia – although it has held off on direct mediation.

China is appearing to fill that void with the Chengdu event.

"As the region's major power, China hopes to show its diplomatic presence to the world by bringing the Japanese and South Korean leaders to the same table," Haruko Satoh, professor and expert on Chinese politics at Osaka University, told AFP.

Before leaving for China, Abe told reporters that links with Seoul remained "severe".

But Abe and Moon were photographed smiling and shaking hands, and made positive overtures at the start of their bilateral meeting.

The relationship between Japan and both Koreas is overshadowed by the 35 years of brutal colonisation by the Japanese – including the use of sex slaves and forced labour – that is still bitterly resented today.

Controversial court rulings

Ties began a downward spiral in recent months after a series of South Korean court rulings ordering Japanese firms to compensate wartime forced labour victims.

These infuriated Tokyo, who insisted the matter had been settled by a 1965 treaty between the two countries.

Seoul then threatened to withdraw from a key military intelligence-sharing pact, although it reversed course in November and agreed to extend it "conditionally".

Abe said he hoped "to improve the important Japan-South Korea relations and to exchange candid opinions", according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK.

On Tuesday, Seoul's presidential Blue House said Moon described the two countries as "the closest neighbours geographically, historically and culturally".

But at a press conference after the bilateral, Abe said it was "South Korea's responsibility" to resolve the issues.

"I urge the South Korean side to get the ball rolling to regain the soundness of Japan-South Korea relations," he said.

Samsung Galaxy Fold, Apple iPhone 11 to OnePlus 7 Pro: The flagships that defined 2019 - The Indian Express

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 06:44 PM PST

Written by Shruti Dhapola | New Delhi | Updated: December 24, 2019 7:21:39 pm
Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, Huawei P30 Pro, and more. We take a look at the phones that stood out for us in 2019 in the flagship category.

As 2019 comes to an end, it is time to take a look at the smartphones that defined the year. In the flagship segment this year, there was plenty of innovation on show, thanks to the foldable form factor display by Samsung, Huawei and Motorola.

Flagships this year were no longer about just big specifications and extra cameras on the back. They were about perfecting what users have come to expect from a flagship phone. We take a look at the phones that stood out for us in 2019 in the flagship category.

The best flagship phone: Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max

Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 Further proof of the iPhone 11 Pro's processing power can be seen from the fact that it is capable of shooting videos with all four cameras simultaneously (three at the back and the selfie camera on the front).

To the casual observer, it might have looked like that Apple was playing catch up with rivals with this year's iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. But there's no doubt in our minds that Apple completely redefined the experience this time and the Pro Max is the flagship winner. The iPhone 11 series was a big leap in terms of overall packaging, even if the design might not look so different from the front.

For one, Apple finally implemented the ultra-wide camera on both the iPhone 11 and Pro variants, but it was one of the best seen in the market, something which most other flagships have struggled to do perfectly. Its Night Mode further enhanced the photography department and the addition of Deep Fusion technology showed how it was pushing the camera's boundaries on the basis of its A13 Bionic chipset.

Further proof of the iPhone 11 Pro's processing power can be seen from the fact that it is capable of shooting videos with all four cameras simultaneously (three at the back and the selfie camera on the front). That's something which no other flagship offers till date.

But perhaps the best part of the new iPhone series was the all day battery life, even on the Pro Max, thus solving a major issue for many Apple users. Yes, the iPhone remains an aspirational device for many in India. But as the iPhone 11 series showed, it was certainly back at the top of the pack.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max review: Apple's best offering at the moment

The flagship that maintained the standard: Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ had a slightly bigger display this time, but then this is the series that started the trend of the big screen phone.

The Galaxy Note 10 this time came in two variants: the regular and the Note 10+ and Samsung continues to maintain the standard with this series. The Note 10+ was an improvement on all fronts, adding more to the S Pen with Air Gestures and more Bluetooth capabilities. The S Pen remains a feature that no other flagship offers and Samsung's execution is so flawless that no one is likely to come close anytime soon.

The Note 10+ had a slightly bigger display this time, but then this is the series that started the trend of the big screen phone. The design, the performance, the extra large 4300 mAh battery and the four cameras, Samsung ticked all the boxes with the Note 10+ making it the ideal upgrade for its loyal Note fanbase.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ review: S-Pen makes all the difference

The phone that stood out the most: Samsung Galaxy Fold

Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 Samsung Galaxy Fold set the standard for what to expect in a foldable phone.

If there was a phone that got everyone excited about the foldable form factor, it would be the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Yes, it had a rough start when it first went on sale in April with trouble over the screen, but Samsung did eventually manage to sort out of those issues and the Galaxy Fold was back for sale by September, and was eventually launched in India by October.

The Galaxy Fold set the standard for what to expect in a foldable phone. As we noted in our review, Samsung managed to ensure that "this was a very compact smartphone" which fit perfectly in the user's hand "despite its thick build" when it was folded. The company nailed the user interface as well on the newer foldable form factor, which will be crucial going forward in this form factor.

Despite the price tag of Rs 1,64,999, the Galaxy Fold certainly showed that a foldable phone could be popular and even managed to sell out in the first days in India. No, Samsung might not have sold one million units of this yet, but it has big plans for the foldable series. In 2020, Samsung is expected to showcase two new versions of the foldable phone and all eyes will be on these.

Samsung Galaxy Fold review: The fold has arrived, so have you

The flagship phone that redefined camera: Huawei P30 Pro

Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 But when it came to the camera, the Huawei P30 Pro was our choice given what it offered and this appears to be a space where the Chinese player is getting better each year.

Huawei had a troubled 2019 thanks to the US sanctions which has left a big question over its phones will run Android in the future. Still that doesn't mean the world's second biggest smartphone vendor is lagging behind. It showcased the Mate X, a stunning foldable phone, though it has only gone on sale in China for now. But when it came to the camera, the Huawei P30 Pro was our choice given what it offered and this appears to be a space where the Chinese player is getting better each year.

The Huawei P30 Pro came with four cameras at the back, implementing a 40MP main camera with what the company called a 'super-spectrum' lens, which had a brand new sensor that would dramatically brighten photos in extreme low-light scenarios. It also implemented an 8MP periscope zoom array with up to 50x digital zoom, a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera and time-of-flight lens for accurately measuring depth.

Huawei's P30 Pro camera was one of the highest rated at the time it launched and it was a phone designed for those who take mobile phone photography damn seriously.

Huawei P30 Pro review: Excellent cameras, great battery life

The comeback phone that got us all excited: Moto Razr 2019

Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 No doubt, the foldable form factor is supposed to be big in 2020 and Motorola's Razr clamshell could end up being one of the more popular ones, given it is so familiar and yet so different.

The rumours about this one started early, and this definitely had everyone excited. After all, the Motorola Razr series is an iconic one. The Moto Razr was back in 2019 in a familiar clamshell form with the new foldable display. While it might not be big on specifications, there's a lot of interest around this for sure.

It does away with a physical SIM slot and relies on an eSIM entirely, which is certainly a first on a phone. It looks like the Moto Razr 2019 might only go on sale in 2020, given the supply issues because of 'consumer demand'. Oh, and the phone appears to be 'Made in India' if one goes by some of the images we saw from unboxing videos that were shared online.

No doubt, the foldable form factor is supposed to be big in 2020 and Motorola's Razr clamshell could end up being one of the more popular ones, given it is so familiar and yet so different.

The flagship that remained value for money OnePlus 7 Pro, later OnePlus 7T Pro

Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 The OnePlus 7 Pro was an impressive flagship smartphone from all accounts.

The OnePlus series is usually awaited because it offers a flagship phone at a mid-range price and the company has perfected this formula. This year, it had a slightly different approach: a OnePlus 7 Pro and a OnePlus 7. The Pro variant was impressive on all accounts; a 90Hz display rate which put it ahead of the competition when it launched in May, a triple camera that was excellent and a smooth daily performance as always. The OnePlus 7 Pro was an impressive flagship smartphone from all accounts. Our team had no qualms recommending this to anyone who needed a flagship under Rs 50,000. The later the OnePlus 7T Pro variant builds on this, and remains an excellent choice as well.

OnePlus 7T Pro review: A good Android flagship

The phone that disappointed everyone: Pixel 4

Flagships of 2019, 2019 best flagships, top flagships of the year, Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T Pro, Google Pixel 4, Motorola Moto Razr 2019, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, Huawei P30 Pro, Flagships that defined 2019 Google Pixel 4 did not get rave reviews, the company might have hoped for.

What to say about the Pixel 4 and Google. This one did not prove to be a redeemer. Yes, Google decided Pixel 4 wasn't going to launch in India, thanks to the Soli Radar chip on the front because that frequency is not approved for commercial usage in the country. But that wasn't all. Google Pixel 4 did not get rave reviews, the company might have hoped for. There were security issues on the Face Unlock feature, white balance problems on the camera, issues with the display refresh rate, and the new Motion Sense feature was far from perfect. Perhaps fifth time will be a charm for Google?

Golden Globe predictions: Jennifer Lopez will hustle off with the supporting actress prize - Gold Derby

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 05:38 PM PST

"Marriage Story" star Laura Dern remains the Best Supporting Actress Oscar favorite, but it's different story at the Golden Globes. Dern is in second place in our odds there, trailing "Jenny from the Block" herself.

Jennifer Lopez ("Hustlers") has opened up a big lead at 17/5 odds to Dern's 37/10 to take home the prize. All 11 of our Editors have Lopez winning, while eight Experts are backing her versus four for Dern. Our Top 24 users, however, are more split, with 11 each for Lopez and Dern; one is predicting Margot Robbie ("Bombshell") and another is going out on a limb for Kathy Bates ("Richard Jewell").

SEE Will Jennifer Lopez finally cash in her Golden Globes IOU more than two decades after 'Selena'?

Lopez, who's in second in our Oscar odds, is enjoying one of her best years ever, powered by her eye-popping turn in "Hustlers" that is the definition of weaponizing movie-star charisma and has reminded folks of the serious acting chops she first displayed two decades ago in films like "Selena" (1997) and "Out of Sight" (1998) before she turned to music and became a global superstar and brand. Her profile and trajectory are exactly the type that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is fond of, and let's not forget, the Globes was one of the first on the J.Lo train, having nominated her for Best Comedy/Musical Actress for "Selena."

Needless to say, a win for Lopez would be huge for her Oscar chances as she seeks her first nomination, especially as her main rival is a highly respected star who has yet to win an Oscar and whose film is a bigger Oscar contender than "Hustlers" is. Dern has also claimed more critics awards than Lopez at the moment.

As the first major awards show out of the gate, the Globes has often changed the course of many Oscar races as subsequent groups sometimes rubber-stamp or piggyback on their winners. Two years ago, Laurie Metcalf ("Lady Bird") and Willem Dafoe ("The Florida Project") were the critical favorites in the supporting races, but the Globes went to Allison Janney ("I, Tonya") and Sam Rockwell ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"), who steamrolled through the rest of the televised precursors to the nab their first Oscars. Could the same happen to Lopez in this truncated season?

Robbie is in third place in our odds, followed by Annette Bening ("The Report") and Bates.

PREDICT the Golden Globe film winners; change them until January 5

Be sure to make your Golden Globe film winners predictions today so that Hollywood insiders can see how their films and performers are faring in our odds. You can keep changing your predictions as often as you like until just before the ceremony on January 5. Before Donald Trump, three other US presidents faced impeachment - Hindustan Times

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 04:44 PM PST

Before Donald Trump, three other US presidents faced impeachment proceedings. None were ousted by impeachment, although Richard Nixon resigned rather than be impeached.

- 1868: Johnson survives by one vote -

Democrat President Andrew Johnson's push for reconstruction after the American Civil War, including by reintegrating the southern States into the Union, put him in conflict with the Congress.

Congress vetoed all his legislation including the "Black Codes" -- racist laws voted by representatives from the South.

In the impasse, Johnson fired his secretary of war, prompting Congress to launch impeachment proceedings -- the first in US history.

On February 24, 1868, the House of Representatives voted 11 articles of impeachment, notably over his attempt to replace an office holder appointed by the Senate.

But after a weeks-long trial, the Senate in May fell one vote short of the two-thirds majority required for a conviction.

Johnson stayed in office but lost his party's bid to run for the next elections, entering the Senate five years later.

- 1974: Nixon resigns before impeachment -

During Republican President Richard Nixon's 1972 campaign for reelection, burglars were sent to bug the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate building in Washington.

The operation was bungled and the burglars were caught, the scandal being revealed in investigative reporting by the Washington Post newspaper.

Nixon attempted to cover-up his involvement. But on July 24, 1974 the US Supreme Court ordered him to hand over clandestine recordings of his private Oval Office conversations which provided the proof that he and his top advisors had engaged in an elaborate cover-up of the crime.

On July 30, the House Judiciary Committee approved three impeachment articles: obstruction of justice, abuse of power and attempt to impede the impeachment process by defying committee subpoenas for evidence.

Before the articles could be considered by the House of Representatives, which would have almost certainly voted for his ouster, Nixon quit on August 9.

- 1999: Clinton acquitted -

In 1998, Democratic President Bill Clinton denied under oath a sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern nearly half his age.

Lewinsky at first also denied any improper relationship but later admitted to an affair, as Clinton eventually did. It led to calls for his impeachment for lying under oath and trying to cover up the affair.

On December 12-13, 1998, the House Judiciary Committee -- voting almost exclusively along party lines -- approved four articles of impeachment: two on perjury, a third on obstruction of justice and a fourth on abuse of power.

On December 19, the House of Representatives voted for impeachment on just two articles: perjury before a grand jury and obstruction of justice.

But at the Senate vote on February 12, 1999, the 45 Democratic senators stayed united against the 55 Republicans to block a two-thirds vote for conviction.

Clinton remained in office until the end of his term in 2001.

YouTube mobile app now lets you search with your voice while casting - Engadget

YouTube

You can now search for videos with your voice on YouTube mobile even while you're casting to a bigger screen. The Google-owned platform has announced the feature, which works on both iOS and Android devices, along with the revelation that it's now possible to watch YouTube in HDR on the PS4 and the PS4 Pro. YouTube's post also talked about the other capabilities it rolled out over the past year. Those include "Who's Watching," a feature that lets you switch between the profiles linked to the device you're watching on, as well as YouTube's debut on Amazon Fire TV devices.

The platform has more cast-related features in the works, as well. German site SmartDroid (via Android Community) has spotted what seems to an experimental feature rolling out to select Android users, which turns the mobile YouTube app into more of a bona fide remote control while you're casting.

At the moment, you can only pretty much use the app to pause, play and adjust the volume while you're casting to a TV. The updated controls, however, show a directional pad that makes it easier to browse videos, and include quicker access to captions and playback quality settings. You'll be able to access those new elements through the volume panel that pops up when you tap on the cast button -- that is, so long as you're one of the users lucky enough to get the feature.

Instagram influencers partied at a Saudi Arabian music festival — but no one mentioned human rights - msnNOW

UP NEXT

UP NEXT

On social media accounts of the followed and famous, the MDL Beast music festival was a rave true to form: fluorescent face paint, flashing lights and a star-studded lineup of DJs who spun dance music into the wee hours.

Officially, the festival was "revolutionary," "progressive" and "a remarkable first" — superlatives many of its influencer-attendees reiterated in posts seen by millions of followers on Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat during the three-day concert that concluded Saturday.

Subscribe to the Post Most newsletter: Today's most popular stories on The Washington Post

What didn't make it into their captions and tweets, however, was any reference to reports that document the human rights abuses of the festival's host, the government of Saudi Arabia.

The event — along with the stars who were invited and possibly paid to attend — was organized by the kingdom's entertainment authority and is part of its sweeping public relations strategy to showcase cultural changes. But critics say it also serves a much more insidious purpose: to rehabilitate Saudi Arabia's damaged international image after the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

The CIA concluded last year that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi's October 2018 assassination inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, contradicting Saudi Arabia's insistence that the crown prince had no advance knowledge of the plot.

On Monday, the kingdom announced that five people had been sentenced to death in Khashoggi's killing. The two most senior officials implicated in the case, including an adviser to the crown prince, were cleared of wrongdoing.

The people who attended the festival have abetted that effort, according to journalists, human rights experts and influencers who chose not to go.

Posts from MDL Beast's high-profile revelers were accompanied by the visual cues that often indicate a paid partnership. Some used the hashtags #ad, #MDLBeast partners or #MDLBeastbrandambassadors. Many tagged the festival's Instagram account @mdlbeast in all their flattering photo captions. Festival organizers did not respond to a request from The Washington Post to confirm whether they paid influencers to promote their event.

American actor Armie Hammer posted a series of photos to Instagram, where he has 1.2 million followers.

"What I just witnessed was truly special," he wrote. "It felt like a cultural shift. A change. Like Woodstock in the 1960′s."

But in the days since the event ended, others have been quick to point out the kingdom's ongoing restrictions of women's rights and the crackdown on political dissent that Mohammed has overseen — even as the government pursues projects like MDL Beast, which would have been unthinkable only several years ago.

The country just recently began to allow women to drive, and in August, a royal decree for the first time allowed women to travel without the permission of their husbands or a male relative. It took months for the government to release women's rights advocates who it had arrested and detained before those changes on what Amnesty International called "bogus charges." Loujain al-Hathloul, among the most prominent activists, has been imprisoned for a year and a half.

As Western festival-goers arrived in Riyadh in varying states of undress, the activist Rana Ahmad said Saudi women, forced to wear abayas and headscarves, would never be able to appear in public so dressed down.

"They enjoy their freedom here, while Saudi women are suffering and watching!" she wrote on Twitter. "It's really the worst feeling that you can't be free and treated differently just because you're a Saudi [woman]!"

Among the most vocal critics of the music festival and its brand ambassadors was Karen Attiah, a Washington Post opinion writer and Khashoggi's editor at the time of his death.

"The dark side of influencer culture is that it really is the ultimate expression of capitalism. Money over human lives," Attiah wrote on Twitter. "What good is your platform if you overlook Saudi regime's murder and torture for a few bucks?"

Attiah, who is writing a book about Khashoggi's work for The Post, called the influencers' financial kickbacks "blood money."

Also vocal in their criticism was the duo behind the Instagram account Diet Prada, which serves as a kind of watchdog over the fashion and beauty industry. In a weekend post, Diet Prada called on its 1.6 million followers to draw attention to the influencers who may have accepted money to promote the festival.

In a statement posted to social media, model Emily Ratajkowski said she turned down a paid invitation to attend and promote the festival even though she has "always wanted to visit Saudi Arabia."

"It is very important to me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, freedom of expression and the right to a free press," Ratajkowski wrote. "I hope coming forward on this brings more attention to the injustices happening there."

Transgender model Teddy Quinlivan claimed in an Instagram story post that the Saudi government had paid influencers to "positively promote travel and events" to the country and wrote that any influencer who was "promoting tourism to a place [that] openly kills journalists and LGBTQ people" was a "sell out."

"Extremely, profoundly disappointed to see people on my Instagram feed who traveled to Saudi Arabia as part of their government's image rehabilitation campaign," former Out editor and current GQ columnist Phillip Picardi wrote on social media. He encouraged any influencers who were unaware of Khashoggi's murder or the "ulterior motives" behind the Saudi government's invitation to call their agent, whose job, Picardi said, is to do risk assessment and research before accepting a paid partnership.

An image of a Glamour UK Instagram story that advertised the MDL Beast festival also circulated. The post was labeled as a "paid partnership" with the event organizers. Representatives from Glamour UK and its parent company, Condé Nast, did not respond to a request for comment from The Post.

In response to criticism from the Diet Prada account, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor said she wished to "agree to disagree."

" … Let's appreciate that the whole world is" problematic right now and "any step forward is something that I want to celebrate," she wrote on her Instagram story. "I was treated with immense respect and love as a Hindu brown female actor."

American actor Ryan Phillippe has also defended his attendance in the comments of the photos he posted to Instagram from Saudi Arabia. When a user asked him if he was getting paid to post about the festival, Phillippe did not answer the question but said he was traveling to "many places in the mid east."

"Find me a country without issues, I'll wait," Phillippe wrote. " … Things are changing and progressing rapidly in KSA and the people are lovely. Pay attention and quit virtue signaling, princess."

10 Little Moments Big Star Wars Fans Will Appreciate In Rise Of Skywalker - CinemaBlend

Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Because it served as the last chapter of the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not only needed to wrap up the main narrative arc of the Sequel Trilogy, it also needed to address and acknowledge events, people and more from the Prequel and Original Trilogies as well. Whether or not it managed to do all this effectively is up for debate, but one thing is inarguable: there were a lot of little moments sprinkled in the movie that longtime Star Wars fans will appreciate.

From quick lines of dialogue and moments that echoed scenes from earlier Star Wars movies, to reuniting with fan-favorite characters and revisiting familiar locations, we've gathered 10 moments in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that will put a smile on most, if not all the faces of folks who've enjoyed this franchise set in a galaxy far, far away.

Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back

Darth Vader's Voice

This had been spoiled ahead of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's release, but it's still worth pointing out. When Kylo Ren arrives at Palpatine's temple on Exegol, Darth Sidious tells the First Order's Supreme Leader that he's been every voice he's ever heard inside his head, but different voices say the latter half of the sentence. First we hear Andy Serkis' Snoke again (it turns out the former Supreme Leader was created by Palpatine), and then the final words are said by Darth Vader, reprised by James Earl Jones. We heard Jones briefly reprised the breathing impaired Sith Lord in Rogue One just three years ago, but it's nice he was able to contribute to the final installment of the Skywalker Saga too.

Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith

Palpatine's Revenge Of The Sith Callback

"The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural." Then-Chancellor Palpatine said this to Anakin Skywalker while telling him the "Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise" in Revenge of the Sith, and he said those same words to Kylo Ren when asked how he was still alive. Look, we still don't know the fully story of how Palpatine survived being tossed into the second Death Star's reactor, but judging by his use of that line, we can assume that his survival had something to do with the power to cheat death that he learned from Plagueis, though he still required complicated machinery to stay alive.

Han Solo in The Force Awakens

Han Solo Reappearing

Since he wasn't a Jedi or Force-sensitive (that we know of), most, if not all fans never expected to see Han Solo as a Force ghost. However, we were treated to one last appearance from the late smuggler in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker thanks to his son. After being stabbed by Rey and then healed by her, Kylo Ren felt more conflicted than ever while on top of the second Death Star's wreckage on Kef Bir. But then he was visited by a vision of Han, who urges his son to come back to the light. The scene then echoed their final encounter in The Force Awakens, but this time, Kylo finally rejected the dark, throwing his lightsaber away and becoming Ben Solo again. When he turned around, the vision of his father was gone.

Luke and Leia in A New Hope

Luke And Leia's Flashback

Like her brother Luke, Leia Organa was quite strong in the Force, and as was suspected, The Rise of Skywalker revealed that in the years after Return of the Jedi, she trained in the ways of the Force under Luke to become a Jedi. Thus, this flashback allowed us to see de-aged versions of the characters, appearing as they did at the end of the Original Trilogy. However, it turns out this the training snippet was saw came from Luke and Leia's last session, as the latter sensed that if she kept going down this path, it would lead to her son's death. So she set down her lightsaber and focused on politics instead, explaining why she didn't wear Jedi robes during the Sequel Trilogy or identify herself as a Jedi.

Yoda raising X-Wing in The Empire Strikes Back

Raising The X-Wing

Yoda was one of the greatest elements of The Empire Strikes Back, and one of the ways he shined was when he raised Luke Skywalker's X-Wing out of the Dagobah swamp after Luke felt the ship was too big to move with the Force and thought the Jedi Master wanted "the impossible." Over 30 years later, Luke did the same for Rey. After Force Ghost Luke convinced Rey not to give up and to travel to Exegol to face Palpatine, she wondered how she'd get there since she destroyed the ship she traveled to Ahch-To in, Kylo Ren's TIE Fighter. Luke had an easy solution: use the ship he'd traveled to the same planet in years earlier, which we briefly saw submerged in The Last Jedi. One raised X-Wing later, and Rey was on her way.

Wedge Antilles in The Empire Strikes Back

Wedge Antilles Returning

He may not have been one of the Original Trilogy's main characters, but Wedge Antilles was around for all three movies, having participated in the Battle of Yavin, the Battle of Hoth and the assault on the second Death Star in the Battle of Endor. After it was revealed that Wedge was a character in the novel Resistance Reborn, which takes place immediately after The Last Jedi, this prompted speculation about if he'd appear in The Rise of Skywalker. Sure enough, Denis Lawson did cameo as Wedge, as he was seen operating one of the Millennium Falcon's turrets during the climactic conflict.

Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith

Jedi Voices From The Great Beyond

At the beginning of The Rise of Skywalker, Rey was trying to communicate with the spirits of dead Jedi, but failed to do so. Cut to her clash with Palpatine, just when all seems lost, she hears the voices of those very Jedi she tried to reach earlier, with all of them lending their strength to her so she could defeat the Sith Lord once and for all. The best part of this sequence is that it's not just Jedi from past movies who are heard, but also a few individuals from the animated shows. You can look through our Rise of Skywalker cameos feature for the full list of voices, but suffice it to say that this was one of the movie's biggest pieces of fan service.

Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back

Seeing Some Familiar Planets

With Palpatine finally being killed (it has to stick this time, right?) and the Final Order's armada being destroyed, the galaxy far, far away was once again at peace. So just like in the special edition of Return of the Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker peeked at a few familiar planets that are now free. In order of appearance, we saw Bespin (Lando Calrissian's former home), Endor (where we saw an older Wicket, the main Ewok from Return of the Jedi, alongside his son, Pommet) and Jakku (where Rey spent the first chunk of her life). There was one other familiar world, but we'll get to that one in a bit.

Han's medal in The Rise of Skywalker

Chewbacca Finally Gets A Medal

There's no question that Chewbacca is one of the Star Wars franchise's greatest heroes, but many fans have taken umbrage with the fact that unlike Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, the Wookiee never received a medal for his contribution to the Battle of Yavin, despite the fact that he was next to Han the whole time! Well, over 30 years later, that was finally rectified, as at the end of The Rise of Skywalker, Maz Kanata gave Chewie Han's old medal, which Leia had kept safely, but with her gone, it rightfully was passed on to him. It's about time!

Lars homestead on Tatooine

The Lars Homestead

The Original Star Wars Trilogy began above and on Tatooine, so it was rather fitting that the Skywalker Saga ended there. After the celebrations were over, Rey traveled to the long-abandoned Lars homestead to bury Luke and Leia's lightsabers on the property, after which she ignited her own lightsaber (the first time we've seen a yellow blade in a Star Wars movie). When a passing local notes how no one's been on the Lars property for years and asks who Rey is, with Luke and Leia's Force Ghosts smiling on, Rey answers "Rey Skywalker" and looks on at Tatooine's twin suns. It was certainly poetic, though I'm hoping Rey doesn't permanently settle there since her family is elsewhere and that'd be the equivalent of living on Jakku again.

Let us know what other moments you enjoyed from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in the comments below. Be sure to start planning what theatrical offerings you'll see next year with our 2020 release schedule.

Cats: The Movie fans notice Judi Dench's hand, complete with WEDDING RING, clearly visible - Daily Mail

The newly-released movie version of Cats suffered another embarrassing moment when fans noticed Judi Dench's hand was clearly visible in one scene.

Tom Hooper's high-budget blockbuster, which was released last Friday, was panned by critics, with last-minute edits being made a day before the premiere.

And the latest faux pax to hit the movie saw Judi, 85, in character as Old Deuteronomy in one scene with her hand - complete with what appeared to be a wedding ring - clearly visible.

Eagle-eyed cinema-goers were quick to notice the mistake, with Variety author Jenelle Riley writing: 'This isn't a joke: CATS was rushed into theatres before being finished so a new version is being sent to theatres with updated effects.'

'How do you know if you have the old version? Look for Judi Dench's human hand, wedding ring and all.'

Judi was married to fellow actor Michael Williams until his death in 2001 and she is now in a relationship with David Mills, a conservationist.

The news of the embarrassing error comes after it emerged that the film has been re-edited by Hooper and reissued to cinemas.

The film is reportedly being updated because Hooper didn't finish working on it until the day before the world premiere, which was last Monday.

In an exchange on Twitter on Friday, it was revealed that the following note was sent to theaters playing the film: 'DCDC and Deluxe-Technicolor will be sending updated FTR-20 SMPTE DCPs of Cats which will include some improved visual effects. The runtime is unchanged.'

While the actual content of the movie will most likely remain unchanged, some visual effects may have been fixed or improved by the director and his post production team.

While Hooper won an Academy Award for directing the 2010 gem The King's Speech, which also won Best Picture that year, this film, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway musical, is suffering with a terrible 19 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Most of the reviews are fairly savage, including one summarized simply with the word, 'Woof', however the Daily Mail's own Brian Viner found he had a soft spot for the feline fiasco.

Praising the film, he wrote: 'Eight out of ten cinemagoers will enjoy it, as long as they go along prepared for what is essentially a feline-themed ballet.'

Jason Derulo, who stars as Rum Tum Tugger in the film, is himself rather displeased with critics' poor opinions, telling TMZ in New York City on Thursday that he thought the film is 'a deportation to another dimension.'

'Reviews don't matter man, reviews don't matter,' he also insisted, calling the film 'an incredibly brave piece of art.'

It should also be noted that the audience score for Cats on Rotten Tomatoes is considerably higher than the critic composite rating, standing at a much healthier 64 percent.

Nippon.com

Posted: 24 Dec 2019 12:21 AM PST
