The latest on the NSW bushfires - 7NEWS.com.au

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 11:31 PM PST

NSW is in the midst of a day of catastrophic fire danger in a season that has now seen eight lives and hundreds of homes lost.

The latest information:

WHERE ARE THE FIRES?

There were 112 fires burning across the state on Saturday.

The Rural Fire Service said their main concerns were the Gospers Mountain megafire northwest of Sydney, the Green Wattle Creek blaze southwest of Sydney and the Grose Valley fire in the Blue Mountains.

They are also tackling fires in the state's south in the Shoalhaven area, between Batemans Bay, Ulladulla, and Sussex Inlet Road area, which are expected to close the Princes Highway.

WHAT'S THE DAMAGE?

The death toll rose from six to eight on Thursday night when two volunteer firefighters were killed after a tree fell into the path of their tanker near Buxton.

Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and 36-year-old Andrew O'Dwyer, who had been helping to battle the Green Wattle Creek blaze, died. The pair, both fathers, have been hailed as heroes.

Almost 800 properties have been lost so far this season and the RFS has warned that number is almost certain to rise.

About three million hectares of land has been burned so far this season.

WHAT WARNINGS HAVE BEEN ISSUED?

A seven-day state of emergency was declared on Thursday.

Catastrophic fire danger has been declared in the Greater Sydney, Illawarra/Shoalhaven and the Southern Ranges regions. There is extreme fire danger in the Greater Hunter and Central Ranges.

A statewide total fire ban remains in place.

WHAT IS THE FORECAST?

The mercury is expected to reach the mid-40s on Saturday afternoon along with strong winds and low humidity.

A southerly change is expected around 4pm to 6pm which will drop temperatures, however, it is also expected to play havoc with some fires, forcing them to change direction.

The RFS and NSW Police have strongly urged people to delay their travel until Sunday or after, with fears motorists could get trapped on roads if fires spread.

The Greater Western Sydney Highway at Marrangaroo has been closed while the Princes Highway on the South Coast is expected to be closed near Ulladulla, and the RFS said there's a "fair chance" the Hume Highway will also be affected.

Billie Eilish Covers Justin Bieber And Cradles Her Pet Tarantula In 'Carpool Karaoke' - MTV.com

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 11:31 PM PST

Billie Eilish is front and center in a new segment of "Carpool Karaoke" on The Late Late Show With James Corden. Joining the host for his commute to work, the singer ran through a couple of her tunes, a Justin Bieber classic, and surprisingly, a song from The Beatles. She also even found time to introduce Corden to her pet tarantula.

Eilish and Corden wasted no time. They hopped into "Bad Guy" and bounced around the car with the energy of having downed three Red Bulls prior to recording. Eilish joked that the song is "really, like, two notes," as they hummed its indelible melody.

Finding some quiet time after being at the top of their lungs for a few moments, Corden switched it up and struck up a conversation and asked if she's met some famous fans recently. She name-dropped Billie Joe Armstrong before then naming her idol Bieber and reflecting on meeting him at Coachella.

"For like all of Coachella weekend, I was like, 'Don't surprise me with Justin Bieber. I can't take it. I can't have to do a show and Justin Bieber's going to be there,'" she said. She ended up meeting him during Ariana Grande's set, noting how awestruck she was at seeing him. In honor of the Biebs, Eilish then blazed through an a capella rendition of "Baby."

Next came "All the Good Girls Go to Hell" in which Eilish twirled around the hair on her head like a hurricane, followed by "Ocean Eyes," throwing it back to her earliest days. In another conversation with Corden about how she first began singing at six years old, Corden breaks out a ukulele for her and she then briefly covers "I Will" by The Beatles. Is there anything she can't do!?

They wrap things up by taking a trip to Billie's childhood home for a tour that shows where the magic happens. Corden gets an up-and-close introduction to her tarantula that crawls on his hand while he goes ghostly white from fear. Once she retrieves her arachnid, she goes down memory lane, telling Corden that her brother, Finneas, told her that he would make her the biggest pop star in the world when they were younger.

Eventually, the pair head back on the road and, as the segment ends and Corden finally gets to work, the two sing "When the Party's Over." After a high five and Eilish telling Corden that she had a good time, we get one last glimpse of the car's bumper.

Check out the full "Carpool Karaoke" segment with Billie Eilish up above.

Vici Gaming earn fortuitous win vs. TNC Predator at the ONE Esports World Pro Invitational - Dot Esports

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 11:31 PM PST

This article is brought to you by StatBanana, the best Dota 2 strategy tool.

A matchup between two of the most recent finalists at a Dota 2 Major will undoubtedly be hyped, especially in the first round of a tournament where the losing team gets eliminated. Today's lower bracket series between Vici Gaming and TNC Predator at the ONE Esports World Pro Invitational didn't disappoint.

Despite VG racing out to early leads throughout the series, TNC held on by their fingertips through several nail-biting situations. VG eventually pulled off a 2-1 win, avoiding elimination and condemning TNC to eighth place.

Game one clearly started off in VG's favor. They looked fantastic in the laning phase, winning all three lanes and proceeding to crush fight after fight. Zeng "Ori" Jiaoyang had a fantastic start on Storm Spirit, picking off TNC one by one.

The early-game advantage went to Ori's head, however, and his greedy item choice in a Bloodstone didn't pay off. TNC managed to steal huge kills on the Storm Spirit, firmly turning the tables on the opposing Chinese team. TNC remained patient, content to draw out the game for their powerful Lifestealer and Kunkka on Kim "Gabbi" Villafuerte and Armel Paul Tabios, respectively.

VG's last-ditch effort was a Divine Rapier on Zhang "Eurus" Chengjun's Gyrocopter. But it wasn't meant to be for the Chinese team. It took 65 minutes, but TNC's restraint paid off and they took the first victory of the series after several tense standoffs.

The second game was a VG stomp. Even though they picked up the nerfed Morphling-Earthshaker combo, their strong laning set them up for success. Ori, this time on Timbersaw, proved to be unkillable, learning from the mistakes he made in the first game. TNC were faced with an overbearing advantage and conceded meekly.

For the third game in a row, VG went ahead off the back of a strong laning stage. TNC focused all their efforts on Gabbi's Morphling, leaving their other cores to fend for themselves in tough duels.

TNC didn't make the game easy for VG, however. Even at a disadvantage, the Major champions showed their mettle by pulling out fights that they had no reason winning. Yet, they were unable to take down Eurus' Slark, who capped off the game with a deathless performance. Eurus did as he pleased, putting VG on his back and avenging their MDL Chengdu Major grand finals loss.

TNC looked out of sorts on the new patch. They've been consistently losing their laning phases, but their incredible acumen in the mid game saw them pull off unlikely teamfight victories and gave them just enough momentum to take down their opponents. It's not a stretch to think that if TNC figured out how to accrue an early-game advantage in 7.23, they could have easily cruised into yet another trophy for the year. TNC's two-tournament winning streak will come to an end, but they still have a Major to look forward to.

VG's drafts were constantly on point, but questions have to be asked of star mid laner Ori. The player has improved dramatically over his VG career, but his performance in this series was lackluster. The majority of the blame for the first game's loss can be attributed to his overextensions on Storm Spirit against a team lacking disables, culminating in a longer series than expected. VG eventually won the series, but Ori will need to find his form for VG's championship aspirations to come true.

VG move on in the World Pro Invitational, facing off against European powerhouse Team Secret in the next series. The elimination match between East vs. West will take place tomorrow, with the winner guaranteeing themselves a top-four placing at the event.

Billie Eilish brings James Corden to her house and lets him meet her pet spider in this week's Carpool Karaoke. Watch it here - CNN

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 11:01 PM PST

In the latest installment of Carpool Karaoke, Corden was serenaded by 18-year-old pop prodigy Billie Eilish, who invited him into her family home to see where her career began and, most importantly, meet her pet tarantula.
The duo kicked off the segment with energetic renditions of "bad guy" and "all the good girls go to hell" from her breakout album "WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?"
After bopping to Eilish's hits, the host magically produced a ukulele from the back seat of the car and gave it to the singer. The star told Corden she wrote her first song on a ukulele when she was 7 years old.
After she strummed a few of her tunes on the ukulele, the pair sang her first hit song, "Ocean Eyes," which Eilish said she recorded at 13.
"That song is the reason that I have the life I have," she told Corden after he asked why she got so emotional singing the song.

They took a quick detour

Then, the pop star took Corden to her family home where it all began. The star still lives with her family in the house where she and her brother Finneus wrote and recorded "WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?"
Eilish gave Corden a tour of Finneus's room, which was packed with audio equipment, an upright piano, enormous rainbow plush pillows and the small whiteboard where the siblings planned out the album.
In a moment he regretted immediately, Corden told Eilish he would meet her pet tarantula.
"Can I be honest? I'm not good with spiders," he said nervously as Eilish went to get the arachnid.
"I don't know how I feel about this now that I can see," he said. "I feel like I said yes so quickly."
In an act of incredible bravery, the host allowed Eilish to put the fuzzy blue spider on his hand, letting loose a storm of f-bombs as the thing crept over his hand.
Corden became frantic when Eilish left the room, leaving the spider on his hand.
To his great relief, she came to the rescue and they made their way back into the car to sing one last song.
To top off the ride, the two drove through the streets of Los Angeles, singing Eilish's melancholic "when the party's over."

Jimmy Howard yields goal in third as Griffins lose at Iowa - MLive.com

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 10:27 PM PST

Jimmy Howard yielded a goal directly in front of the net at the 7:35 mark of the third period Friday as the Grand Rapids Griffins lost on the road to Iowa, 4-2.

Howard, making his second conditioning start with the AHL team as he rehabs from a groin injury Nov. 27, was beaten by Gerald Mayhew who took a nice feed along the boards from Kyle Rau, to break a 2-2 tie.

Mayhew stole the puck at center ice and added an empty netter in the final seconds.

Howard's first game with the Griffins was Tuesday in San Diego as he stopped 30 of 32 shots and thwarted all three attempts in a shootout to give the Griffins a 3-2 victory.

Howard practiced with the Griffins Thursday and traveled with the team to Des Moines, He expected to return to the Red Wings on Saturday and start in Sunday's game against the Arizona Coyotes.

"Over the years when you have injuries you learn what's best to come back," Howard said on Griffins Game Day that posted Friday. "Getting down here to play with the farm team is a good way for me."

Against Iowa, Howard yield goals late in the first and early in the second. He faced 29 shots.

The Griffins, after an early power play goal from Eric Tangradi, tied it at 2-2 with 3:32 left in the second on Matthew Ford's goal.

This was Howard first conditioning assignment with the Griffins since March 7, 2017, when he posted 21 saves in a 3-0 win at San Antonio.

He began his professional career in Grand Rapids and played for the Griffins from 2005-09.

House of Representatives impeaches President Donald Trump - CNN

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 09:31 PM PST

The House voted almost entirely along party lines for two articles of impeachment to remove the President from office — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — sending the case to the Senate for a trial expected to start next month.
The impeachment votes marked the culmination of a sprawling and rapidly moving three-month Democratic investigation into allegations that the President pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rivals while withholding US security assistance and a White House meeting.
The House voted 230-197 to charge Trump with abuse of power and 229-198 to charge him with obstruction of Congress. The votes were largely split along party lines: just two Democrats voted against both articles, Reps. Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, who is expected to soon switch parties. A third, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted for one impeachment article. Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, voted present for both articles.
Republican-turned independent Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan voted to impeach Trump on both counts.
Trump's impeachment, which occurred 85 days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the opening of the impeachment inquiry, will have long-lasting ramifications across Washington and beyond. It will undoubtedly shape the legacies of the key players in the midst of it, from Pelosi and her committee chairs who led the impeachment proceedings to Trump and his staunchest defenders in Congress.
It's a scenario that appeared unlikely just months ago for Pelosi, who had resisted the push for Trump's impeachment from liberal advocates both inside her caucus and outside Capitol Hill. But then an anonymous whistleblower complaint changed the course of history for both Trump and his chief antagonist at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.
"We gather today under the dome of this temple of democracy to exercise one of the most solemn powers that this body can take: The impeachment of the President of the United States," Pelosi said Wednesday to kick off the impeachment debate on the House floor. "If we do not act now we would be derelict in our duty. It is tragic that the President's reckless actions make impeachment necessary. He gave us no choice."
Trump now joins a small club of Presidents who have been impeached by the House for "high crimes and misdemeanors" cited in the Constitution: President Andrew Johnson in 1868 and President Bill Clinton in 1998. President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before impeachment proceedings against him could reach the House floor.
Both Johnson and Clinton were acquitted by the Senate, and there's effectively zero chance the Republican-controlled Senate will remove Trump from office. But unlike Johnson and Clinton, who did not run again after they were impeached, Trump will face reelection less than a year after his impeachment, giving voters the opportunity to have the final word in November 2020.
'If I lose my seat over it, so be it': Moderate Democrats confront consequences of impeaching Trump
Trump has insisted he did nothing wrong in his "perfect" July call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which formed the basis of the whistleblower complaint. Trump tweeted repeatedly about the impeachment proceedings against him on Wednesday as the House debate unfolded.
"The House Democrats are surrendering the majority, their dignity," Trump said at a rally in Michigan after learning he'd officially been impeached. "They look like a bunch of fools."

Pelosi won't commit to sending articles

Wednesday's vote shifts the impeachment proceedings to the Senate, where a trial is expected in January. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Republican senators at a policy lunch Tuesday that he will announce by the end of the week the date for the start of the Senate trial, according to sources.
But Pelosi, at a news conference after the vote, would not commit to sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate, saying "that would have been our intention, but we'll see what happens over there."
McConnell addressed impeachment on the Senate floor later Thursday morning, calling the Democratic-led effort "the most rushed, least thorough, and most unfair impeachment inquiry in modern history." He said Pelosi's delay in sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate was a sign that "House Democrats may be too afraid to even transmit their shoddy work product to the Senate."
Democrats say that Trump was impeached because he abused his office by directing a pressure campaign for Ukraine to announce an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, conditioning $400 million in US security aid and a one-on-one White House meeting on the investigation. Then Trump covered up his misconduct, Democrats say, obstructing Congress by stonewalling all the subpoenas from Congress trying to investigate his conduct.
"His conduct continues to undermine our Constitution and threaten our next election," said House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat. "His actions warrant his impeachment and demand his removal from office."
House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who led the impeachment investigation, said that the President "was willing to sacrifice our national security by withholding support for a critical strategic partner at war in order to improve his reelection prospects."
"But for the courage of someone willing to blow the whistle, he would have gotten away with it," Schiff said. "Instead, he got caught. He tried to cheat, and he got caught."
But congressional Republicans condemned Democrats for rushing to impeach the President, charging that Democrats pushed forward with a partisan impeachment intended to beat Trump at the ballot box in 2020.
Warning lights are flashing for Democrats as they impeach Trump
"What we've seen is a process that's led to the most partisan and least credible impeachment in the history of America," said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
"What we've found here today is a president who did not do as being charged," said Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee. "The call itself, the two parties say no pressure. Nothing was ever done to get the money. In fact, they didn't even know the money was held."
"The people of America see through this. The people of America understand due process, and they understand when it is being trampled in the people's House," said Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee.

Day of intense partisan debate

The intense partisan debate over impeachment played out for hours on the House floor Wednesday on rapid-fire fashion ahead of the impeachment votes. In one-to-two minute speeches, Democrats and Republicans traded passionate arguments for why they were voting for or against impeachment. Back and forth they went: Democrats explaining the duty to impeach, followed by Republicans declaring that impeachment was a massive mistake.
Lawmakers on both sides referenced back to the Founding Fathers, to the history being made with Wednesday's votes and to the ramifications they were leaving for their children and grandchildren.
The floor fight is the same war that the two parties have waged for the past three months in the closed-door depositions and committee hearings after Pelosi opened an impeachment inquiry on September 24.
The investigation included testimony from 17 officials, 12 of whom appeared in public hearings. They described a months-long campaign led by the President's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to oust former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, followed by a push for Ukraine to announce the investigations that would benefit the President politically.
Several key officials, including acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton, refused to testify. Democrats, however, chalked up the defiance of subpoenas to evidence of congressional obstruction rather than fighting in court to force witnesses to appear — a move that could have prolonged the impeachment inquiry for weeks if not months.
Presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard votes 'present' on impeachment
Leading up to Wednesday's vote, no Republicans signaled they were considering voting to impeach the President. The looming question was whether moderate Democrats — the 31 who represented congressional districts Trump won in 2016 — would support impeachment.
One by one, almost every one of the 31 Democrats said they were compelled to vote for impeachment. Only Peterson, a veteran lawmaker from a deeply red rural Minnesota district, and Van Drew, who signaled he would soon switch parties, said they were opposed to impeachment altogether. Golden split the difference, voting for abuse of power and against obstruction of Congress.
For House Democrats, the next step to prepare for the trial is to name impeachment managers who will prosecute the case in the Senate. Wednesday's vote also paved the way for the House to approve a resolution announcing the managers — though they aren't likely to be named until the House sends the articles to the Senate.
This story has been updated with additional developments Thursday.

Why Is the Justice Department Treating T-Mobile Like a Client? - The New York Times

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 09:04 PM PST

Makan Delrahim, the head of the Justice Department's antitrust division, is paid by taxpayers to prevent corporate mergers that damage the public interest. Instead of doing this important police work, however, Mr. Delrahim has chosen to cast himself as a deal maker.

The Times reported on Thursday that Mr. Delrahim worked assiduously this past summer to clear the way for the merger of two rival mobile phone companies, T-Mobile and Sprint, by helping to arrange for the two companies to sell some assets to a third company, Dish. Mr. Delrahim behaved like a man who wanted to make a deal. In text messages, which were disclosed as part of a related court case, he repeatedly coaxed and cajoled executives at the three companies, as well as federal officials who had the ability to block the merger.

Mr. Delrahim has cast his actions as a defense of the public interest. In announcing that the Justice Department had approved the merger in July, he said that he had been prepared to go to court to block the merger had Dish not participated in the agreement. The asset sales are intended to allow Dish to emerge as a viable new mobile phone company, filling the void when Sprint departs the marketplace.

But Mr. Delrahim was negotiating with himself. His campaign to secure Dish's participation amounted to a concerted effort to satisfy his own objections to the proposed deal. Rather than defending the public interest, he was working to defend T-Mobile's interests.

And the deeper problem is that Mr. Delrahim's behavior was not exceptional.

Since the 1980s, the federal government has maintained a permissive attitude toward corporate concentration, giving the benefit of the doubt to companies that want to get hitched. In the words of William French Smith, who served as attorney general under President Reagan and inaugurated the policy, "We must recognize that bigness in business does not necessarily mean badness, and that success should not automatically be suspect."

Even when the federal government does feel compelled to delay a merger, it almost always seeks to resolve its concerns by making a deal. Regarding mergers as generally beneficial, the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission seek to sand off rough edges by extracting promises of good behavior or requiring the companies to divest assets.

Under the guidance of Mr. Delrahim, Sprint has agreed to sell to Dish its prepaid mobile division, Boost, while T-Mobile has agreed to let Dish use its transmission network.

The government's reliance on such deal making, through consent orders, has some advantages. Suing to block a merger is time-consuming and expensive, and there is no guarantee of success. Also, sometimes the best answer is a compromise. And Mr. Delrahim deserves credit for several reforms. He has sought to avoid reliance on promises of good behavior, which are difficult to enforce. Instead, he has insisted that companies make structural changes, such as divesting lines of business. He has created an office to monitor corporate compliance. And he has changed the standard deal terms to make it easier for Justice Department officials to establish noncompliance.

In 2017, he made an example of General Electric, imposing a daily fine on the company until it complied fully with the promises it had made to win approval of a merger with Baker Hughes.

The problem with the government's emphasis on negotiated mergers is not in the quality of the negotiations, or the enforcement, but in the support for mergers itself. The premise that facilitating corporate concentration is generally in the public interest is fundamentally flawed.

The T-Mobile case illustrates the cost. T-Mobile and Sprint are fierce competitors. They have driven each other, and their larger rivals, Verizon and AT&T, to innovate and to hold down prices. The likely consequence of allowing them to merge is less innovation and higher prices. T-Mobile has promised not to raise prices for three years, a commitment that has value precisely because of what is most likely going to happen to prices thereafter. Similarly, the government's frantic efforts to turn Dish into a new competitor only reinforces that Sprint's departure from the marketplace is bad for consumers. But instead of making the simple and correct decision to block the deal, Mr. Delrahim worked hard to shepherd it through.

Indeed, he's still fighting on behalf of the mobile phone companies. A group of state attorneys general is trying to block the merger; Mr. Delrahim's text messages were disclosed as part of the evidence in that case. On Friday, the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission filed papers with the court defending the merits of the merger — and specifically Mr. Delrahim's deal.

T-Mobile and Sprint are big, profitable companies. They can hire their own lawyers.

Mr. Delrahim is paid by the American people. His clients need him to do his job.

Australia battles 'catastrophic' wildfires as PM rushes home - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 09:01 PM PST

PERTH, Australia — Australia's most populous state was paralyzed by "catastrophic" fire conditions Saturday amid souring temperatures, while one person died as wildfires also ravaged the country's southeast.

"Catastrophic fire conditions are as bad as it gets," New South Wales Rural Fire Services Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons told reporters. "Given we have a landscape with so much active fire burning, you have a recipe for very serious concern and a very dangerous day."

Areas in western Sydney were forecast to hit 47 degrees Celsius (115 Fahrenheit). A cooling change was expected to move through New South Wales late Saturday although authorities warned that strong winds could push fires in dangerous new directions.

New South Wales is in a seven-day state of emergency as around 2,000 firefighters battle 100 wildfires.

Two firefighters died Thursday battling blazes southwest of Sydney. Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, were in a truck convoy southwest of Sydney when a tree fell and caused the vehicle to roll off the road.

Authorities confirmed Saturday one person died and 15 homes were destroyed in South Australia as a wildfire ravaged the Adelaide Hills on Friday, just 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the state capital of Adelaide. Another person was critically injured after fighting to save his home from the fires.

It follows the death of a 24-year-old man in a road crash in South Australia on Friday, which sparked a fire in the area of the Murraylands.

Authorities said 23 firefighters and several police have also suffered injuries, as more than 40,000 hectares (98,842 acres) burnt across South Australia.

"It is going to be a real scene of devastation, especially for those people in the Adelaide Hills who have been most affected," South Australia Premier Steven Marshall said.

"We know that in addition to the buildings and vehicles lost there are very significant losses in terms of livestock, animals, crops, vineyards."

The annual Australian fire season, which peaks during the Southern Hemisphere summer, started early after an unusually warm and dry winter. Around 3 million hectares (7.4 million acres) of land has burnt nationwide during a torrid past few months, with nine people killed and more than 800 homes destroyed.

The devastation has put pressure on Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who has copped criticism for going on a family holiday in Hawaii during the wildfires crisis. He apologized on Friday for "any offence caused to any of the many Australians affected by the terrible bushfires by my taking leave with family at this time".

Morrison said he would cut short his vacation and was expected to return to Sydney on Saturday, where he is due to visit the Rural Fire Service headquarters.

Debate has reignited on whether Morrison's conservative government has taken enough action on climate change. Australia is the world's largest exporter of coal and liquefied natural gas.

Fatih Birol, International Energy Agency executive director, believed Australia had missed opportunities to mitigate the impact of coal.

"I find the Australian energy debate far too emotional, far too nervous and far too hot. It is hotter than the climate change itself," he told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

Protesters on Thursday camped outside Morrison's Sydney residence demanding urgent action on climate change.

Morrison, who critics have deemed a climate change skeptic, conceded earlier this month that "climate change along with many other factors" contributed to the wildfires.

NSW holiday-makers urged to delay plans - 7NEWS.com.au

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 08:31 PM PST

Travellers in NSW are being urged to postpone their holiday plans amid dangerous bushfire conditions across large chunks of the state.

NSW Police assistant commissioner Karen Webb says the public should delay all non-essential travel.

In the video above: Heartbreak as firefighters killed in bushfires

"The NSW Police message to motorists is today is not the day to start your holiday," she told reporters at the NSW Rural Fire Service headquarters on Saturday morning.

"Delay your travel until tomorrow. Conditions will be much milder and you can have a better trip."

Fire danger is rated "catastrophic" on Saturday in greater Sydney, Illawarra-Shoalhaven and the southern ranges, and "extreme" in the Hunter, the ACT and the central ranges.

There are concerns the Hume Highway connecting Sydney and Canberra could be closed if the Green Wattle Creek bushfire south of Sydney spreads later in the day.

"There is every potential for the fire to spread further and cause concern not just for communities in that area but the potential for impact on the Hume Highway," RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons told reporters.

The NSW government has also warned that the Princes Highway out of Sydney could be closed.

Trains lines between Macarthur and Moss Vale have also been impacted.

The Great Western Highway has been closed in both directions west of Lithgow and the Old Hume Highway between Picton and Yanderra has also been closed.

Actress Brittany Murphy's half-brother believes she was killed - Page Six

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 08:16 PM PST

Friday marked the 10th anniversary of the death of actress Brittany Murphy. The star — known for her roles in films such as "Clueless," "8 Mile" and "Girl, Interrupted" — was pronounced dead Dec. 20, 2009, at the age of 32 under what many have since called questionable circumstances.

The primary cause of her death was listed as pneumonia and drug intoxication, but Murphy's half-brother, Tony Bertolotti, believes her husband, screenwriter Simon Monjack may have been inadvertently responsible for her passing. Both Monjack — who died just five months later — and Murphy's mother were in the home when she died.

"If you look at it from a distance, it's like, here's this young lady — a fairly healthy girl — she's home with her supposed husband and mother, and she died," Bertolotti observed to the Daily Mail. "How absurd is it? It's only in Hollywood that it's considered another day at the zoo. No one takes her to a hospital, which is just four miles away."

He continued, "I spent years looking at this, suppressing my own anger. I think Brittany was taken out. Who killed Brittany? She didn't die of natural causes."

Bertolotti — a retired saxophonist and composer — believes his former brother-in-law may have had something to do with Murphy's death, due to his "six-figure bank and business debt."

"I don't know what business decisions they were making at that time, but it [their deaths] sounds business-related to me," Tony asserted. "I've heard all sorts of crap, so what is true? I don't believe the drugs line that much, I don't buy it. I'm sure there was experimentation. But Brittany was conservative with that stuff, she was a bright girl."

Murphy's brother went on to say he believes someone has profited from her death, and that person may be the culprit.

"You've got to look at, who's collecting the money now? I don't know. Every time the movie comes on, someone is getting paid. Whoever's got the money knows the truth.

"There was a group of at least 15 to 30 people around Brittany, and you tell me that no one knows nothing," he continued. "Are you kidding? If I had the money to properly investigate her death, I'd go around all of them, but they wouldn't speak to me."

According to Bertolotti, their father, Angelo Bertolotti, also believed his daughter's death was due to foul play. Angelo himself died in January 2019.

"My father was up to it like a hound dog, but then [he] got sick and had a stroke. Till his dying day, he was obsessed with finding out what happened. He went up to a bunch of these people, but no one would talk to him. We couldn't find out anything. What's it all tell you? The thing is locked down."

Claudine Auger: French actress known for James Bond role dies aged 78 - BBC News

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 08:16 PM PST

French actress Claudine Auger, best known for her role alongside Sean Connery in the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball, has died at the age of 78.

She died on Wednesday in Paris following a long period of illness, her agency Time Art said.

Auger started out as a model, representing France and coming first runner-up in Miss World in 1958.

But she quickly developed a talent for acting, and landed roles including one in the 1962 film The Iron Mask.

A few years later in 1965, she shot to global stardom as Domino in Thunderball, the fourth film in the Bond franchise.

She was the first female co-star to the James Bond character, known as a "Bond girl", to be from France.

It was later revealed that the production team had rewritten the character for Auger. Domino was initially supposed to be Italian, but she became French.

"Bond girls" were rarely given recognition for their acting talents, with the focus at the time instead being on their physical appearance and swimsuits.

However, Auger approached the role as she would if she were "playing Molière" at a prestigious theatre, she told a TV interview in 1965.

It was "a game, the same thing", she said.

After Thunderball, Auger went on to have a fruitful career in French and Italian cinema throughout the late 1960s and 1970s.

Among her best known films are crime thrillers That Man George and Flic Story, and the romantic tragedy A Few Hours of Sunlight.

Jokowi inaugurates five members of newly formed KPK supervisory council - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 07:31 PM PST

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated on Friday five members of the newly established Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) supervisory council, as he expressed the hope that the members' wealth of experience and expertise would serve them well in their new positions.

Tapped by Jokowi to helm the supervisory council was Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean, who formerly served as KPK deputy commissioner between 2003 and 2007, the first term of the antigraft body after it was established.

Tumpak was inaugurated in Friday's ceremony at the State Palace alongside the council members who include Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) chairman and former Constitutional Court justice Harjono as well as former Supreme Court justice Artidjo Alkostar.

The other two members are deputy head of Kupang High Court Albertina Ho and Indonesia Sciences Institute (LIPI) senior political researcher Syamsudin Haris.

"We appointed [the KPK supervisory council members] from a diverse background," Jokowi told reporters on Friday, "We believe this is a good combination that will function well to control and oversee the KPK commissioner."

The supervisory council was established as mandated by the revised KPK Law, which was passed by the House of Representatives in September.

The revision was strongly opposed by student and antigraft activists given its relatively short deliberation process at the House and the inclusion of articles regarded as curbing the KPK's independence and authority, including the articles on the supervisory council.

According to the new KPK Law, the council is tasked with, among other roles, overseeing the work of the KPK commissioners, while the antigraft agency's wiretap search and seizure of evidence must also be carried out with the approval of the council.

"I hope that corruption eradication [efforts] can be conducted systematically so that they have a positive impact on the economy [and] our country," said Jokowi.

Aware of the criticism directed at the council, Syamsudin argued that the establishment of the KPK supervisory council reflected Jokowi's antigraft commitment.

"I believe this is a good chance for President Jokowi to show his commitment to the corruption eradication [campaign]," said Syamsudin

Australia's NSW braces for catastrophic fire conditions - Reuters Africa

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 06:31 PM PST

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Firefighters in the Australian state of New South Wales were bracing for "catastrophic" fire conditions on Saturday as temperatures well above 40C (104F) and strong winds were set to fuel more than 100 fires burning across the state.

FILE PHOTO: Firefighters work at the scene of a bushfires in Bilpin, New South Wales, Australia in this still image from a social media video December 15, 2019. Andrew Mitchell/Cottage Point Rural Fire Brigade via REUTERS

Authorities asked people to delay travel, at the start of what is normally a busy Christmas holiday period, warning of the unpredictability of the fires as winds of up to 70 kph (44 mph) were set to fan flames through the middle of the day.

"Catastrophic fire conditions are as bad as it gets," NSW Rural Fire Services Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons told journalists.

"They are the very worst of conditions. Given we have a landscape with so much active fire burning, you have a recipe for very serious concern and a very dangerous day."

Greater Sydney and two surrounding areas were rated as catastrophic for Saturday, and other areas were at extreme or very-high fire danger ratings.

Close to 10,000 emergency personnel would be working across NSW on Saturday, which the NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said was likely the largest emergency deployment the state had ever seen.

"They're there, four days before Christmas, to keep families safe," Elliott told media.

A southerly wind change is expected late on Saturday afternoon. It is forecast to bring winds of up to 90 kph (56 mph), which Fitzsimmons said would initially worsen fire conditions before leading to a dramatic drop in temperatures.

The Gospers Mountain mega fire, which has already burned almost 450,000 hectares (1.1 million acres) to the northwest of Sydney was upgraded to emergency status early on Saturday.

The death of two firefighters on Thursday night when their fire truck was struck by a falling tree as it travelled through the front line of a fire brought the wildfires death toll in New South Wales to eight since the start of October.

Shortly after the two deaths were announced, Prime Minister Scott Morrison issued a statement saying he would return as soon as possible from a family holiday in Hawaii, a trip that had drawn sharp criticism as the wildfires crisis deepened.

Australia has been fighting wildfires across three states for weeks, with blazes destroying more than 700 homes and nearly 3 million acres (1.2 million hectares) of bushland.

China Mobile Stock Is Cheap and Looks Like a Winner - Barron's

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 06:04 PM PST

China Mobile has 946 million mobile customers—10 times those of Verizon Communications or AT&T—and almost three times the U.S. population. | Illustration by Kevin Whipple

Few companies anywhere in the world come as big and as cheap as China Mobile.

The leader in the Chinese wireless market, China Mobile (ticker: CHL) has 946 million mobile customers—10 times those of Verizon Communications (VZ) or AT&T (T)—and almost three times the U.S. population. It has more than $100 billion in annual sales.

Related Data

Market Data Center: EMEA and Asia

So far, size has not translated into strong stock performance. The U.S.-listed shares of China Mobile traded on Friday at $41, about where they stood a decade ago.

Yet, with the stock now fetching just 11 times projected 2019 earnings of $3.80, China Mobile is worth a call. The company's outlook is improving with the recent rollout of next-generation 5G services. And it has a 4% dividend yield, after a 10% withholding tax.

"China Mobile is an underappreciated global giant about to see a positive catalyst with the 5G upgrade and upside potential for earnings and dividends," says Chris Lane, a Bernstein analyst who has an Outperform rating and a $51 price target on the stock.

Telecom Titans

How China Mobile stacks up against its Chinese rivals–and its U.S. peers.

Source: Bloomberg

Based on its price/earnings ratio, China Mobile trades at a slight discount to Verizon and AT&T. But the gap with the two U.S. giants swells when comparing enterprise value against cash flow, as measured by earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda. Enterprise value reflects equity market value plus net debt—or in the case of China Mobile, $47 billion in net cash.

" "China Mobile is one of the most secure companies in the world, but investors value [it] on the dividend and ignore other factors like the balance sheet." "

—Chris Lane, of Bernstein

China Mobile is valued at less than three times projected 2019 Ebitda, one of the lowest ratios for a large company anywhere. Verizon and AT&T are valued at eight times projected 2019 Ebitda, reflecting their significant debt. Many telecom investors favor such an enterprise-value/cash-flow ratio over a traditional price/earnings ratio because the former better captures financial strength.

Over the past two years, a 4G price war with rivals China Telecom (CHA) and China Unicom (CHU) has buffeted China Mobile. Its stock has fallen 15% and earnings were down nearly 15% in the first half of 2019. Lane, however, sees a 2% gain in the second half and 11% earnings growth in 2020, driven by higher-priced 5G services.

Still, China Mobile's depressed stock reflects investors' worries about investing in a state-controlled company. The Chinese government owns 72% of the stock, whose main listing is in Hong Kong. Beijing seems more interested in making wireless services widely and cheaply available to the Chinese people than in generating returns for China Mobile shareholders. (Barron's wrote favorably about the company in 2017, when the stock traded around $50.)

Bernstein's Lane believes that the government should strike a better balance. "China Mobile can continue to build great networks and provide high-quality services at low prices, while still providing investors with good returns," he wrote this year.

The company has spent heavily in the past few years on its wireless network and a massive buildout of fiber to provide high-speed data connections. Since 2014, China Mobile broadband customers have gone from virtually zero to 175 million—U.S. industry leader Comcast (CMCSA) has 29 million broadband subscribers.

China Mobile's dividend outlook is critical to the stock. Unlike U.S. telecom operators, it doesn't pay fixed quarterly dividends. Its semiannual payouts are tied to earnings. During the first half of 2019, the dividend declined 16%, to 1.53 Hong Kong dollars (20 U.S. cents), but the company stated in its first-half earnings report on Aug. 8 that it would "strive to maintain a stable dividend per share for the full year." This implies a higher payout for the second half.

Lane argues that China Mobile can raise its payout without denting its big cash reserves. He has urged the company to lift its earnings payout ratio toward 75% in the coming years from its current 50%, which could provide a big lift to the stock.

Newsletter Sign-up

"The earnings are stabilizing, the dividend has scope to increase and the price/earnings multiple has room to expand," says Edmund Harriss, investment director with Guinness Atkinson Asset Management in London, a China Mobile holder.

Beijing's outsize influence may cause investors to shy away from China Mobile, but its stock still looks appealing with the company moving to a higher dividend payout ratio.

The 5G rollout, improving 2020 prospects, and the possibility of more-shareholder-friendly policies could all make China Mobile a surprise winner in the global telecom sector next year.

U.S. Navy bans TikTok from government-issued mobile devices - KFGO News

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 05:34 PM PST

By M.B. Pell and Echo Wang

(Reuters) - Earlier this week the United States Navy banned the social media app TikTok from government-issued mobile devices, saying the popular short video app represented a "cybersecurity threat."

A bulletin issued by the Navy on Tuesday showed up on a Facebook page serving military members, saying users of government issued mobile devices who had TikTok and did not remove the app would be blocked from the Navy Marine Corps Intranet.

The Navy would not describe in detail what dangers the app presents, but Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Uriah Orland said in a statement the order was part of an effort to "address existing and emerging threats".

TikTok did not return a request for comment.

TikTok is hugely popular with U.S. teenagers, but has come under scrutiny from U.S. regulators and lawmakers in recent months. The U.S. government has opened a national security review of the app's owner Beijing ByteDance Technology Co's $1 billion acquisition of U.S. social media app Musical.ly, Reuters first reported last month.

Last month, U.S army cadets were instructed not to use TikTok, after Senator Chuck Schumer raised security concerns about the army using TikTok in their recruiting.

A Navy spokesman said Naval and Marine personnel who use government issued smart devices are generally allowed to use popular commercial apps, including common social media apps, but from time to time specific programs that present security threats are banned. He would not give examples of apps that are allowed or those considered unsafe.

The Pentagon's Orland said the "Cyber Awareness Message" sent Dec. 16 "identifies the potential risk associated with using the TikTok app and directs appropriate action for employees to take in order to safeguard their personal information."

Trump impeached in historic House vote - MarketWatch

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 05:31 PM PST

MarketWatch photo illustration/Getty Images
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said President Donald Trump gave Democrats 'no choice' but to impeach him, as he called their effort an 'assault' on the country.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday became the third U.S. president in history to be impeached, as the Democratic-led House of Representatives approved abuse-of-power and obstruction-of-Congress charges against the Republican leader.

Voting after a day of rancorous partisan debate, the House backed the articles of impeachment against Trump largely along party lines. No Republicans supported either charge and only a few Democrats broke ranks on both articles.

The evening votes followed a months-long investigation into Trump, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing and called the proceedings a "witch hunt."

Investors have largely ignored the impeachment drama in Washington. Stocks finished Wednesday trading mixed, but equities have notched solid gains this year, with the S&P 500 SPX, +0.49%   up more than 27% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.28%   up over 21%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.42%   has advanced around 33%.

Now read: Why stock-market investors don't care about impeachment — and what it would take for that to change.

The Democrats' impeachment case rests on what they call Trump's abuse of power by withholding aid to Ukraine to pressure Kyiv to announce investigations that could politically benefit him. Democrats also charged Trump with obstructing Congress, by instructing his top advisers to defy subpoenas.

Now see: House Judiciary Committee approves articles of impeachment against Trump.

"If we don't act, we would be derelict in our duty. He gave us no choice," said Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, in remarks on the House floor.

Getty Images
Speaker Nancy Pelosi walks to the House floor at the U.S. Capitol, while the chamber readied for its historic impeachment vote on Wednesday.

The matter now moves to the Republican-controlled Senate, where a trial is expected to begin in January. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, told Fox News last week that there is "no chance" Trump will be removed from office. A January trial would come shortly ahead of the first presidential primaries of the 2020 election season, with Democrats choosing from a wide field of contenders seeking to take on Trump in November.

Pelosi added a bit of uncertainty Wednesday night by declining to say when the articles will get sent to the Senate so the trial can start, saying Democrats "haven't seen anything that looks fair to us" so far in the Senate's process.

Now see: Here's what's happening next in Democrats' effort to impeach President Trump.

Opening a "Keep America Great" rally in Battle Creek, Mich., on Wednesday night, Trump brushed off the action in the House. "It doesn't really feel like we're being impeached," he told supporters. Earlier in the day he called the Democrats' efforts "an assault on America," in a tweet.

Tweeting Wednesday morning, Trump said, "Read the Transcripts," referring to records of conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "This should never happen to another President again. Say a PRAYER!"

In a July call with Zelensky, Trump asked him to investigate Democrats and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is seeking his party's 2020 presidential nomination. Trump has defended that call as "perfect."

The daylong House debate featured Republicans like Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the top GOP member on the House Judiciary Committee, charging Democrats with trying to fulfill a goal originating in November 2016.

"You've been wanting to do this ever since the gentleman was elected," said Collins.

Democrats rejected that argument. "We will clarify that in America, no one is above the law," said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island said, "this is not about making history, this is about holding a lawless president accountable."

Another Republican, Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, likened the proceedings to the trial of Jesus Christ. "During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than Democrats have afforded this president in this process," he said.

Pelosi formally opened the impeachment inquiry on Sept. 24. In a letter to the speaker on Tuesday, Trump said she and her party were "declaring war" on American democracy. Pelosi called the president's six-page letter "really sick."

Two Democrats — Reps. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey and Collin Peterson of Minnesota — voted against the abuse-of-power charge. Van Drew is about to switch parties; Peterson hails from a district Trump won overwhelmingly and has said impeachment is a waste of time since the Senate is unlikely to remove him. Van Drew and Peterson also voted against the obstruction article, as did Jared Golden, a Democrat from a conservative Maine district. Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat running for president, voted "present" on both articles.

The vote on abuse of power was 230-197 and on obstruction of Congress it was 229-198.

As the House was debating Wednesday, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note TMUBMUSD10Y, -0.27%   rose three basis points to 1.93% and the U.S. dollar DXY, +0.31%   was up less than 1% against a basket of its major rivals.

"So far, impeachment has had essentially no market impact as traders do not expect the president will be removed from office," said Chris Low, chief economist of FHN Financial, in a note.

NSW Bushfires: Travellers told to put holidays on hold as 'catastrophic' fire danger closes highways, threatens homes - 7NEWS.com.au

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 05:31 PM PST

More homes in NSW are under threat as catastrophic fire danger once again hits the state, with hot, gusty winds and high temperatures taking hold.

Travellers have been advised to delay their Christmas getaways until at least Sunday, with police and the Rural Fire Service warning people not to put themselves in harm's way.

Watch the video above.

The Greater Sydney, Illawarra-Shoalhaven and southern ranges regions face catastrophic danger with high temperatures into the mid-40s expected.

The Greater Hunter and central ranges will experience extreme fire danger.

'Another tough day'

RFS deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said Saturday will be another "tough day" for firefighters, describing it as a "fairly sure thing" that more homes will be lost.

The Bureau of Meteorology said hot air will move eastwards and gusty northwest winds will present "very dangerous and challenging fire conditions".

A southerly change is expected to sweep up the coast on Saturday afternoon, hitting Sydney between 2pm and 6pm.

Part of the Princes Highway on the South Coast will be closed near Ulladulla, and the RFS said there's a "fair chance" the Hume Highway will also be affected.

The Rural Fire Service is mainly concerned about the Gospers Mountain mega-fire northwest of Sydney and the Green Wattle Creek blaze southwest of Sydney.

More on 7NEWS.com.au

They are also tackling fires in the state's south in the Shoalhaven area, between Batemans Bay, Ulladulla, and Sussex Inlet Road area.

Toll mounts

Two more families have been left devastated by blazes after firefighters Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, died.

The pair, both fathers who volunteered with Horsley Park Rural Fire Brigade, were killed when a tree fell into the path of their tanker, causing it to roll, as they were travelling in a convoy near the town of Buxton late on Thursday night.

Their deaths take the number of people killed in NSW this bushfire season to eight.

Almost 800 properties have been destroyed and about three million hectares of land destroyed.

All national parks in Greater Sydney are closed from Saturday until further notice, the state's environment department announced on Friday.

NSW Health has again urged people to take care as smoke from bushfires continues to lower air quality.

Residents and firefighters near the Green Wattle Creek blaze are preparing to face down the fire for another day amid warnings of deteriorating weather conditions.

Buxton south local Jeff Van Der Korput spent his 34th birthday on Thursday defending properties in the suburb from the firestorm with a homemade water tanker.

Equipped with a 2000 litre petrol water pump he fought off a grass fire on his neighbour's property and saved a ringtail possum by putting it inside a hat.

"The (Rural Fire Service) was tied up and I built (the water pump) two years ago because I was getting worried about how dry it was and we've had to use it," Mr Van Der Korput told AAP on Friday.

With no power and very little water coming from the mains, Mr Van der Korput said he was feeling "very uneasy" about conditions on Saturday.

'It's hot, it's windy, these fires just here are starting out of nothing again from yesterday.'

"It's hot, it's windy, these fires just here are starting out of nothing again from yesterday - all we can do is just sit here and be prepared...we don't have the ability to do much."

Catastrophic danger

Rogers warned the public not to take unnecessary risks.

"Do not put yourself in harm's way tomorrow," Rogers said on Friday.

"Do not put yourself near an isolated bush area. If your home is directly on the bush and it's not got a huge break you should think about relocating."

Within walking distance from Mr Van Der Korput's property is the site where two RFS members died on Thursday night when a tree fell onto their tanker.

'Everyone's sort of feeling it.

At the Buxton RFS station on Friday volunteer Peter Lockerbie - who's been with the Bundanoon RFS for 10 years - says the tragic event left local crews "gutted".

"Everyone's sort of feeling it," Mr Lockerbie told AAP on Friday.

"Today with the fire activity not being nearly as intense as yesterday, it's allowed us to have a chat with each other about it and share our thoughts.

"It gives us time to reflect on what happened ... because tomorrow when things start off again we need to be on our A-game."

とTAKUYA∞は咆哮し、「WE ARE GO」を4万5000人と大合唱。
