Victorian bushfires: Man found dead in home in East Gippsland - 7NEWS.com.au

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 11:38 PM PST

Bushfires raging in Victoria's East Gippsland have turned deadly, with the body of a man found in his home.

Mick Roberts had not made contact with family on Tuesday.

On Wednesday his niece Leah Parson posted online that he had died at his Buchan home.

'Very sad day'

"He's not missing anymore ... sorry but his body has been found in his house ...very sad day for us to srart (sic) the year but we're a bloody tight family and we will never forget our mate and my beautiful Uncle Mick," Ms Parsons wrote on the East Gippsland fire season 2019-2020 Facebook page.

Victoria Police said they were en route to the area and were aware of the situation.

'We will never forget our mate and my beautiful Uncle Mick.'

Earlier on Wednesday Premier Daniel Andrews said four people were still missing, but would not say what communities in East Gippsland the people belonged to.

"Everything is being done to try and establish the whereabouts of these people," he told reporters at the Bairnsdale incident control centre on Wednesday.

Four people are still missing in Victoria's Gippsland region as bushfires tore through hundreds of thousands of hectares

After spending more than a day on emergency alert, the highest possible fire warning, the threat in East Gippsland and at Corryong in northeast Victoria had been downgraded to watch and acts.

Risks remain

However, the risk of flare-ups remains. Conditions are expected to worsen on Saturday and dry lightning has continued to spark new fires.

Helicopters will fly out 90 firefighters stuck at the isolated coastal holiday town of Mallacoota near the NSW border so there can be a shift change.

"We've got choppers taking 90 firefighters out of the Mallacoota area, they can't be removed any other way - we're essentially doing a shift change by the air," Mr Andrews said.

"We've never done that before, getting firefighters that are essentially isolated in that Mallacoota community out and fresh teams going in."

More from 7NEWS.com.au on the bushfire crisis:

More than 500,000 hectares have been burnt as three fires in East Gippsland combined on Tuesday.

The blaze at Corryong has burnt 109,000 hectares and is also at risk of spreading and merging.

Confirmed property losses are 24 structures at Buchan, 19 at Sarsfield, 10 at Mallacoota and up to 15 at Cudgewa.

Power has been cut to more than 7000 properties at East Gippsland and more than 1800 in the northeast.

AusNet said it could take days to restore power because the fires were still burning and it was unsafe to attend and assess the extent of damage.

Phones down

Phones remain cut across much of the region and people are struggling to communicate with loved ones and get the latest information on the fire risk.

A boil water notice was put in place for Mallacoota from Tuesday to reduce public health risks.

A NSW police boat brought in water to Mallacoota on Tuesday and a Victoria water police boat is taking 1.6 tonnes of water on Wednesday.

A barge from Melbourne with two weeks' supply of food, water and fuel is also making its way to the town.

After a request from the premier on Tuesday, military personnel will start arriving to help with the relief effort.

Aircraft including Black Hawk helicopters are expected to land in the east of the state on Wednesday with other aircraft and naval vessels due in the coming days to help move people out of the area.

Naval vessels including HMAS Choules left Sydney bound for the East Gippsland coast on Tuesday evening and training vessel MV Sycamore has also been deployed.

Power play, four-goal first propel Kings past Flyers 5-3 - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:40 PM PST

LOS ANGELES — Adrian Kempe had a goal and an assist, Anze Kopitar added two assists and the Los Angeles Kings used a four-goal first period to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Kyle Clifford, Alex Iafallo, Tyler Toffoli and Martin Frk also scored for the Kings, who are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games. Jonathan Quick made 32 saves to snap a three-game losing streak.

It is Kopitar's second straight multi-point game and 10th of the season. His two assists also moved him past Luc Robitaille for fourth in franchise history. Kopitar has 598 in 14 seasons.

It is the first time since Nov. 26, 2014, at Minnesota, that the Kings scored four goals in the first 20 minutes. Thirteen of Los Angeles' 18 skaters ended up having a goal or assist in the game.

Justin Braun, Claude Giroux and Scott Laughton scored for Philadelphia. Brian Elliott allowed four goals on 15 shots in the first period before being replaced by Carter Hart at the first intermission. Hart made 13 saves.

Los Angeles came in 1 of 13 on the power play in its past five games, but converted on all three of its chances.

After Clifford opened the scoring at 5:31 of the first on a wrist shot., Iafallo redirected Kopitar's pass from the slot 86 seconds after Clifford's goal and Toffoli put in a rebound of his own shot at 8:54.

Kempe gave the Kings a 4-0 advantage with 2:08 remaining in the first when he finished off a two-on-one short-handed breakaway with a wrist shot. It was Los Angeles' fourth short-handed goal of the season and the fourth allowed by Philadelphia.

Bruan got his first goal of the season when his shot went off the skate of Kings' defenseman Matt Roy and past Quick.

Frk got his third goal in as many games 91 seconds into the third with a wrist shot on the power play. The Flyers closed the gap with goals by Giroux and Laughton, who returned to the lineup after missing seven games due to a groin injury.

NOTES: The last time the Kings scored four goals in any period was Feb. 5, 2019, at New Jersey. ... Iafallo extended his point streak to a season-best five games. He has two goals and four assists during the span. ... Giroux has a point in four straight games (one goal, three assists).

It's New Year's Eve. Let's Drop Something From The Sky - WFUV News

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:38 PM PST

Andrew Lichtenstein

by

12.31.19 8:01pm

As the new year rolls across the globe — first in independent Samoa, Tonga and Kiribati, the first countries to ring in the new year, and ending, in a poetic circle-of-life-kind of way, in American Samoa — in the U.S., people are getting ready to usher in 2020 by looking up and watching a giant object fall from the sky.

The most famous, of course, is the dazzling lighted New Year's Eve ball that slides down a pole in New York's Times Square.

The first ball dropped more than 100 years ago. It was 6 feet in diameter, made of iron and wood, weighed 700 pounds, and contained 100 lightbulbs, Business Insider reported.

But the "time ball" — born out of a maritime tradition to help ships at sea keep accurate time — has become much more high tech since then.

The one that will delight more than a billion people across the world tonight, is 12 feet in diameter, weighs 11,875 pounds, contains 2,688 Waterford crystals, and 32,256 LED lights.

The New Yorker reports, it is "an aluminum, geodesic skeleton covered in wedge-cut crystals and more than thirty-two thousand light-emitting diodes, which are capable of creating billions of kaleidoscopic color patterns."

It is the largest crystal ball in the world.

Yet, not everyone is equally mesmerized by the 19th-century-inspired contraption.

When the Moon Pie hits your eye

Revelers in Mobile, Ala., for instance, gather to count down as a 600-lb. electric Moon Pie logo is dropped down the side of a 34-story building.

The snack-based celebration began in 2008 and was the brainchild of City Councilman Fred Richardson.

The Moon Pie, for those who don't know, is a southern treat that's a lot like a s'more. It consists of a marshmallow smashed between two graham crackers and dipped in chocolate.

Since it was first invented at the turn of the century, the confection has become a favorite during Mardi Gras, when it is thrown from floats. Now, the metal Moon Pie sign is a huge draw for thousands from the Gulf Coast, Matt Anderson, special projects manager for the city of Mobile, told NPR.

"In the years since it started, it's become the largest New Year's Eve celebration in the central time zone," Anderson said.

Sushi in the sky with sequins

In balmy Key West, Fla., a drag diva named Sushi descends from the sky in a sequins-covered red high heel at the stroke of midnight.

"It started out as a fluke 22 years ago," Stephen Courter, who works the event, told NPR.

"But now the entire street is blocked off and it's become the central event that started the Key West excitement," Courter added.

Each year, Sushi, whose given name is Gary Marion, floats down in the red shoe draped in a custom-made gown that's kept top secret until the grand reveal at the New Orleans House.

This year, Courter says, the gown is inspired by the 1920s "but it's for a new version of the 20s."

"We've created a monster"

Meanwhile, partiers in Flagstaff, Ariz., gather to see a massive, multicolored pine cone descend from atop one of the city's historic hotels.

"What people don't know is that the first one I made I built it out of a plastic garbage can," Sam Green, told NPR.

Green and her husband, Henry Taylor, own the Weatherford Hotel, which started the tradition 20 years ago.

The idea for the pine cone drop came as the couple were gearing up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the hotel.

"It opened on New Year's Day in 1900, so in 1999 we said, we have to do something special," Green said.

That led to the plastic garbage can covered in hundreds of pine cones and lights. About 500 people showed up the first year.

"Now we've created a monster! It just gets bigger and bigger," Green laughed.

She expects about 15,000 people will show up to watch.

Why the pine cone?

Green says Flagstaff is near the biggest ponderosa pine forest in the world. "So it made sense," she said.

"Local sense of identity"

Rituals like these mark symbolic gatherings where people join together and decide that something is meaningful, Michelle Janning, a professor of sociology from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., told NPR.

"The things we choose to drop are visual symbols about the importance of the event or the place," Janning said. "So a big glittery ball may not symbolize the Midwest but something else might."

She said the pine cones and pineapples, and peaches all represent an effort by "people to carve out their own local sense of identity."

Janning added that the holidays can be difficult for a lot of people.

"So, doing something in a crowd is a resolution of some the angst around the holidays. A chance to be part of something bigger than you," she said.

Australia scrambles to reach thousands stranded by bushfires - FRANCE 24

Sydney (AFP)

Fire-ravaged Australia has launched a major operation to reach thousands of people stranded in seaside towns after deadly bushfires ripped through popular tourist areas on New Year's Eve.

Navy ships and military aircraft were deployed alongside emergency crews Wednesday to provide humanitarian relief and assess the damage from one of the worst days yet in Australia's months-long bushfire crisis.

Three people have died and five others remain missing after the country's southeast was devastated by out-of-control blazes, while at least two schools and dozens of homes were feared destroyed.

Information was trickling out of coastal communities where thousands of holidaymakers and locals were thought to have seen in the New Year taking refuge from flames at surf clubs, as power outages and damage to telecommunications towers brought down phone lines and the internet.

New South Wales (NSW) Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said emergency services faced a "real challenge" trying to help injured people -- some reportedly suffering burns -- in isolated areas.

"We haven't been able to get access via roads or via aircraft. It's been... too dangerous and we simply can't access, nor can the people in these areas get out," he said.

- 'Ember attacks' -

But there was cheers and relief in the town of Mallacoota -- where towering columns of smoke turned the sky pitch black and nearby fires caused waves of "ember attacks" -- after around 4,000 people who had huddled on the foreshore ringed by fire trucks survived unharmed.

"I understand there was a standing ovation at the end of that for the firefighters," Victoria Emergency Management commissioner Andrew Crisp told public broadcaster ABC.

Cooler temperatures and lighter winds also provided a window of opportunity for relief efforts Wednesday, but there were concerns over new fires sparked late Tuesday in alpine regions.

There's a lot of people holidaying, again, up in those areas," Crisp said. "We'll be prioritising those and hitting them as hard as we can. We don't need any new fires."

Firefighters were racing to take advantage of the mild weather to contain dozens of blazes, as authorities warned the fire danger would spike again on Saturday.

"At the very least, weather conditions will be at least as bad as what they were yesterday," NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

This season's blazes have killed 13 people, destroyed more than 1,000 homes and scorched about 5.5 million hectares (13.5 million acres) -- an area bigger than Denmark or the Netherlands.

The unprecedented crisis has sparked street protests calling on the government to immediately act on climate change, which scientists say is creating a longer and more intense bushfire season.

Conservative Prime Minister Scott Morrison has come under increasing pressure for his response, which has included holidaying in Hawaii as the disaster unfolded and reiterating his steadfast support for Australia's lucrative coal mining industry.

Police fire tear gas as Hong Kong rings in New Year - Al Jazeera English

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:08 PM PST

Hong Kong police fired tear gas a few minutes into 2020 on Wednesday as pro-democracy protesters took their movement into the new year with midnight countdown rallies and an enormous march planned for January 1.

The city has been battered by more than six months of unrest with marches attended by millions, as well as confrontations in which police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets - and protesters have responded with petrol bombs.

More:

Before midnight on Tuesday, thousands of protesters gathered across the financial hub, including along the waterfront of Victoria Harbour and at nightlife hotspot Lan Kwai Fong.

Protesters at the harbourfront counted down chanting: "Ten! Nine! Liberate Hong Kong, revolution now!" as they lit up their phones in a sea of lights.

Smaller crowds of protesters in the Mong Kok district set fire to barricades early on Wednesday, prompting riot police to unleash 2020's first volleys of tear gas in response.

Shortly before the final day of 2019 drew to a close, police used water cannon to disperse protesters in the same area while, in nearby Prince Edward neighbourhood, officers arrested several protesters staging a candlelight vigil.

Earlier in the evening, thousands of people linked arms in human chains that stretched for miles along busy shopping streets and through local neighbourhoods.

They chanted slogans, sang: Glory to Hong Kong - a protest anthem - and held up posters calling for people to fight for democracy in 2020.

"Thanks to 2019, which tore off the ugly masks of the police and the government and let the people see the truth," said protester Kris, a medic who joined the protest.

"The movement is kind of like at its bottleneck now. Hopefully, a huge turnout at tomorrow's march could bring back people's passion," he added.

The city's traditional New Year Eve's bumper fireworks display was cancelled due to safety concerns, but a light show and smaller-scale fireworks took place instead.

Economic disruption

In late November, the city's pro-democracy camp scored a landslide victory in a municipal-level vote seen as a referendum on the Beijing-backed government's handling of political unrest.

The protest movement has since become quieter but sporadic clashes have persisted.

In a New Year's video message broadcast on state media, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Hong Kong's recent upheaval was concerning and that the "people of our motherland" expected stability in the restive city.

But protesters have promised to continue their effort to push for greater democratic freedoms and police accountability.

On Tuesday night, demonstrators also swarmed large shopping malls, which have become regular protest venues in an effort to cause economic disruption.

"2019 is a remarkable and special year for every single Hongkonger," 25-year-old teacher Sam told AFP news agency as he celebrated New Year's Eve with his family at the harbourfront.

The Civil Human Rights Front, the chief organiser of marches, hopes for a huge turnout at Wednesday's rally to urge the government to respond to the demands of the pro-democracy movement - which include an independent inquiry into the police, amnesty for arrestees and fully free elections.

Police have arrested nearly 6,500 people since June - nearly a third of them aged under 20.

"The youngsters have sacrificed a lot for justice ... 2019 is a wake-up call," a 63-year-old retiree, who gave his surname as Shiu, told AFP news agency.

"People will be more determined in the new year. People know that the future of Hong Kong depends on whether we can achieve the five demands."

The demonstrations were sparked by a now-abandoned bill to allow extraditions to the authoritarian mainland, but have since morphed into a popular revolt against Beijing's control - the biggest crisis since the former British colony's return to Chinese rule in 1997.

PHT Time Machine: Mario Lemieux’s 5 goals, 5 different ways - NBC Sports - Misc.

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:40 PM PST

Throughout the season we will be taking an occasional look back at some significant moments in NHL history. This is the PHT Time Machine. Today we look back back to Dec. 31, 1988 when Pittsburgh Penguins center Mario Lemieux became the first — and only — player to score five goals, five different ways in the same game.

It was 31 years ago Tuesday that Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux accomplished what was probably his most incredible single-game achievement: Scoring five goals in every possible way during an 8-6 win over the New Jersey Devils.

His goals: An even-strength goal, a power play goal, a shorthanded goal, a penalty shot goal (which was also while the Penguins were shorthanded), and an empty-net goal.

They are all in the featured video above. Notice the commentary just before the first goal that says the Penguins really need a "big game" from Lemieux. He delivered.

It was the first five-goal game of his career, while he also finished with eight total points, factoring into every single goal the Penguins scored. It was his second eight-point game of the season. He recorded at least five points in a game 12 different times, including three seven-point games. He finished the season with 199 points (while missing four games) but only finished second in the Hart Trophy voting behind Wayne Gretzky who had just finished his first season with the Los Angeles Kings. It remains one of the most controversial MVP votes in league history (read about that here).

Some other random facts from that game

  • His five goals gave him 43 for the season. It was only the Penguins' 38th game.
  • Not crazy enough? His eight points put him over the 100-point mark for the season. In game 38. It was the third-fastest climb to 100 points in league history, behind only a couple of early 1980s Wayne Gretzky seasons.
  • His first three goals (even-strength, power play, shorthanded) came in the game's first 10 minutes.
  • His shorthanded goal was already his seventh of the season. He would go on to score an NHL record (that still stands today) 13 shorthanded goals that season. He scored 10 the year before.
  • An underrated and completely overlooked performance in this game is that Kirk Muller, the No. 2 pick in the 1984 draft, just one spot behind Lemieux, had five points. His team lost by two goals. The 1980s were really something.
  • Speaking of, this was a classic 1980s game in the sense that there were 14 total goals and 68 total penalty minutes between the two teams. There were no fighting majors in the game, but New Jersey's Steve Rooney was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for cross-checking late in the first period.

This just seems to be one of those accomplishments that will be nearly impossible to duplicate in the modern game.

Consider the fact that any five-goal performances is almost unheard of now.

There have only been 11 five-goal games in the NHL since this performance by Lemieux, and two of those games belong to Lemieux himself.

There have only been three since 1996 (Marian Gaborik in 2007, Johan Franzen in 2011, and Patrik Laine in 2018).

Since the start of the 1979-80 season, there have only been 134 instances where a player recorded a hat trick with at least one even-strength goal, one shorthanded goal, and one power play goal. There is also the fact that penalties are down across the league from where they used to be (negating the number of power play and shorthanded chances players get) and penalty shots are now extremely rare.

It is probably the one feat in NHL history that you can say with probably 99.9 percent certainty that it will never be accomplished again.

Pope Francis smacks woman's hand to free himself from her grip - CNN

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:08 PM PST

The pope was making his way to the Nativity scene at the center of Vatican City.
As he walked away from the crowd, a woman grabbed his hand and yanked him toward her, video shows.
He became visibly upset and began slapping the woman's hand in an attempt to free himself from her grip, and he briefly shouted at the woman.
Prior to the incident, the woman had made a sign of the cross. She addressed the 83-year-old pope as she took his hand but it's unclear what she was trying to tell him.

'Humble' Messi stuns onlookers by training at local gym - Goal.com

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:40 PM PST

Lionel Messi has stunned Rosario locals after training in a public gym as he looks to keep fit over the festive season.

Currently on a break with Barcelona's next game not until January 4 against Espanyol, Messi was spotted working out back home in Argentina on New Year's Eve.

But rather than using his own private gym, the 32-year-old opted to train alongside his fellow countrymen and quickly caused quite a stir.

Article continues below

"He entered as one more, I could not believe it," gym worker Valentina Jure told Rosario Nuestro. "He used the machines like anyone else, he was smiling with everyone.

"I can't believe it, my phone literally exploded. Journalists and people from all over the world wrote to me."

Funnily enough, while Messi kept fit on one of the treadmills his own Barcelona highlights just happened to be playing right in front of him.

Though no doubt spurring the six-time Ballon d'Or winner on as he trained, Valentina stressed Messi didn't purposely seek out his own highlight reel.

"I want to say that the channel with his goals was already set when he arrived," she said.

"I like to clarify it because people have written to me saying that it is self-centered but it was nothing like that - he was super humble with everyone while we were there."

After being held back by injuries at the start of the season, Messi quickly made up for lost time and went into the Christmas break with 13 La Liga goals from just 13 appearances.

Those goals have helped Barcelona to the summit of Spain's top flight with rivals Real Madrid trailling Ernesto Valverde's side by two points after 18 league matches.

While Messi is clearly doing his bit to stay fit over the holidays, Carlos Tevez has previously questioned the Argentine's workout regime, particularly when compared to Cristiano Ronaldo's.

"Lionel Messi, I never saw him in the gym. I've never seen him train to stop the ball or those exercises," Tevez said in 2018.

"It is all natural to him, but on penalties he trained - first he did not take them and now he shoots them all at the corner.

"Cristiano always stopped in the gym after training, for him it is an obsession and, being the best in everything, he always arrived at work early."

The theme for the Times Square New Year’s Eve bash is climate change - The Verge

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:38 PM PST

Times Square revelers will ring in the New Year to a theme of existential crisis tonight. Science teachers and students taking on the climate crisis will push the crystal button to trigger the ball drop in Times Square. Organizers of the annual New Year's Eve celebration in New York City choose a theme each year based on the biggest issues in the news, and this year that theme is climate change.

"[You'd] have to have a soul of Styrofoam not to be moved by the passion of young people demanding that we do better, and 'listen to the science' to start solving the problem," Tim Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance, said in a press release. He added that "you'd have to have your head buried" in sand not to be alarmed by 2019's environmental catastrophes.

Sydney, Australia rang in the new year amid protests calling for the city to cancel its fireworks because of devastating bushfires that have killed at least 10 people and forced thousands to evacuate just before the holiday. Scientists have warned that global warming intensifies droughts and heat waves feeding the flames.

2019 marks the close of the hottest recorded decade so far. More "climate emergencies" were declared this year than any ever before. Thousands of students across the world have walked out of classrooms throughout the year to demand faster action on climate change. The four high school seniors and two teachers who will initiate the ball drop are being recognized for their work to clean up local air and water, and organize a youth climate march.

Police fire tear gas as Hong Kong rings in New Year - TRT World

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:38 PM PST

Smaller crowds of protesters in the Mong Kok district set fire to barricades and riot police unleashed 2020's first volleys of tear gas in response.

Hong Kong police fired tear gas a few minutes into 2020 as anti-Beijing protesters took their movement into the New Year with midnight countdown rallies and a massive march planned for January 1.

The city has been battered by more than six months of unrest with marches attended by millions, as well as confrontations in which police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets - and protesters have responded with petrol bombs.

Before midnight on Tuesday, thousands of protesters gathered across the financial hub, including along the waterfront of Victoria Harbour and at nightlife hotspot Lan Kwai Fong.

Protesters at the harbour front counted down chanting "Ten! Nine! Liberate Hong Kong, revolution now!" as they lit up their phones in a sea of lights.

Smaller crowds of protesters in the Mong Kok district set fire to barricades - and riot police unleashed 2020's first volleys of tear gas in response.

Shortly before the final day of 2019 drew to a close, police used water cannon to disperse protesters in the same area while, in nearby Prince Edward neighbourhood, officers arrested several protesters staging a candlelight vigil.

Human chains

Earlier in the evening, thousands of people linked arms in human chains that stretched for miles along busy shopping streets and through local neighbourhoods.

They chanted slogans, sang "Glory to Hong Kong" - a protest anthem - and held up posters calling for people to fight for democracy in 2020.

"Thanks to 2019, which tore off the ugly masks of the police and the government and let the people see the truth," said protester Kris, a medic who joined protest.

"The movement is kind of like at its bottleneck now. Hopefully a huge turnout at tomorrow's march could bring back people's passion," he added.

The city's traditional New Year Eve's bumper fireworks display was cancelled due to safety concerns, but a light show and smaller-scale fireworks took place instead.

Economic disruption

In late November, the city's anti-Beijing camp scored a landslide victory in a municipal-level vote seen as a referendum on the Beijing-backed government's handling of political unrest.

The protest movement has since become quieter but sporadic clashes have persisted.

In a New Year's video message broadcast on state media, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Hong Kong's recent upheaval was concerning and that the "people of our motherland" expected stability in the restive city.

But protesters have vowed to continue their effort to push for greater democratic freedoms and police accountability.

On Tuesday night, demonstrators also swarmed major shopping malls, which have become regular protest venues in an effort to cause economic disruption.

"2019 is a remarkable and special year for every single Hongkonger," 25-year-old teacher Sam told AFP as he celebrated New Year's Eve with his family at the harbour front.

"People's demands are loud and clear, but the government is not listening. In 2020, I really hope it will be a better year for all Hong Kong people."

The Civil Human Rights Front, the chief organiser of marches, hopes for a huge turnout at Wednesday's rally to urge the government to respond to the demands of the anti-government movement - which include an independent inquiry into the police, amnesty for arrestees and fully free elections.

Police have arrested nearly 6,500 people since June - nearly a third of them aged under 20.

"The youngsters have sacrificed a lot for justice...2019 is a wake-up call," a 63-year-old retiree, who gave his surname as Shiu, told AFP.

Watch: Fireworks and New Year's Eve celebrations as world welcomes new decade - Euronews

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 05:38 PM PST

From New Zealand to New York, millions around the world are set to enjoy spectacular firework displays to celebrate the arrival of 2020 — and the start of a new decade.

You can watch some of the biggest fireworks live in the video player above.

The Line Islands of the Pacific Ocean were the first to say goodbye to 2019, followed by Auckland, New Zealand, where half a ton of fireworks burst from the Sky Tower above the city centre.

In Australia, Sydney was given official permission to go ahead with its iconic pyrotechnics despite a total fire ban triggered by huge deadly wildfires. Other Australian cities, including Canberra, cancelled their celebrations due to the worsening wildfire risk.

In Beijing, there was a spectacular choreographed display of dancing and music. The tallest building in the world was the centrepiece of the United Arab Emirates' show, with fireworks framing the Burj Khalifa.

In France, more than 100,000 police and gendarmes were deployed across the country to keep crowds safe watching firework displays.

Athens' Acropolis was lit up by an impressive show of fireworks.

London's Big Ben, which had been silenced for more than a year by a major refurbishment, is expected to chime at midnight, while hundreds of thousands will celebrate Hogmanay in Edinburgh.

Here's a look at the best photos from New Year's celebrations around the world:

The best viral videos of 2019 - Mashable

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:42 PM PST

Can you believe that2019 is finally coming to an end?

These days it seems like the internet meme machine blows things up, only to forget about them a day later. So you may need a reminder of the best moments in the past year that united us all in tears, laughter, and occasionally, sweet, sweet keyboard rage.

Here are our picks for the top 17 videos the internet loved in 2019.

1. Dad drags his daughter through an airport

Captured on the first day of January, someone witnessed a dad lovingly dragging his daughter through Dulles International Airport by the hood of her jacket. According to the person filming, she wasn't screaming or crying, just chilling out and going for a ride. Big, big mood.

2. Gordon Ramsay's sweet suffering on Hot Ones

Revenge is a dish best served extremely, extremely hot. While many celebrities have tasted the dreaded hot sauce spread on this season of Hot Ones, none was more satisfying to watch than Gordon Ramsey. Although he's known for his fiery mouth, he gets absolutely wrecked. Who's the "idiot sandwich" now, Gordon?

3. How to make a Tyler, the Creator song

Indie rock singer/songwriter Left At London got a shoutout from Tyler, the Creator himself over a video she made breaking down his musical style to its essentials. She jokes about his lyrics, instrumentation choices, and themes of his albums — but it's a pitch perfect parody.

4. How would a sentient baguette move if it could?

Every year we're collectively forced to make a decision that absolutely tears apart the fabric of the internet. Yanny vs. Laurel. The Dress. This year it was how a baguette would move, if it were sentient.

5. Dad put a mic on a 4-year-old during hockey practice

What's better than tiny humans attempting to play sports? Capturing the real-time commentary gold from such activities. YouTuber Coach Jeremy mic'd up his son Mason while he was out on the ice and got some hilarious audio. The video even had an adorable sequel.

6. Keanu Reeves getting heckled at E3

Not every heckle is wholesome. But who can say a bad word to the internet's forever lord and savior, Keanu Reeves? Reeves made a surprise appearance onstage at E3 this year to announce his upcoming appearance in the game Cyberpunk 2077. An audience member took the opportunity to express how we all collectively feel about Keanu — that he is absolutely "breathtaking."

7. Tati Westbrook's callout of James Charles

If you haven't been following the Beautube drama to end all dramas, we suggest you read our breakdown of the series of events here. In the back-and-forth between makeup gurus James Charles and Tati Westbrook, we would've chosen Westbrook's initial callout as one of the most influential videos of the year so far, titled "BYE SISTER." But that's since been taken down. Like all good internet feuds, this one ended in the Notes app

8. Jeopardy! record-breaking single day winner

Whether or not you're a fan of Jeopardy!, James Holzhauer's record-breaking win is a feat worth watching. He beat the all-time record of highest winnings in a single day, taking home $131,127.

9. Security camera captures a Dobby-like creature

Even though it's easier now than ever before to doctor photos and videos, we all can't help but love a good unexplained mystery. Vivian Gomez posted a video to Facebook of a security camera capturing an alien-like creature outside her home. It would have been terrifying, had it not looked like Dobby the house-elf from Harry Potter. At least we can all laugh the creepy vibes away this time.

10. Turtle ASMR

Little turtles eating little foods by a pond was certainly one of the more wholesome moments of 2019. These tiny reptiles brought a calming stability to an otherwise chaotic year. Perhaps the most crucial thing we learned in 2019 was that turtles can have a little watermelon, and that turtle ASMR is cute as (s)hell.

11. Real-life recreation of 'The Simpsons' New Orleans food tour

Designer and illustrator Katrin von Niederhäusern nailed this recreation of The Simpsons New Orleans food tour scene. Everything was perfect, from the food, to the reactions, to the camera angles. It's fair to say we have our first great Simpsons live-action, shot-for-shot remake. Your move, Disney.

12. Truck ends up on top of a house

Go ahead and file this one under "things we think just cannot happen until Canada proves us wrong." A dashcam captured the moment this rental truck veered off into a ditch before it was launched, landing on some unlucky person's roof. Nobody was hurt, thankfully, but it doesn't make anyone feel good to know one day they might look up and see a truck, of all things, plummeting toward them. Stay safe out there, people.

13. The Greta Thunberg Helpline

Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has had a spectacular year. Angry boomers who don't like Thunberg, on the other hand, have not. For those people, satirist Mark Humphries gave us the Greta Thunberg Helpline: For adults angry at a child. Do you need to rant to a stranger about a girl trying to bring awareness to climate change? Here's your chance. Except, not really.

14. Pup vibin' to "Sunflower"

Remember when the coolest dog in the universe was head bobbing to Post Malone and Swae Lee's "Sunflower" from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack? If you can't find anything to like about this video, then you're obviously not even looking.

15. Wheel of Fortune contestant's "loveless marriage"

Whew, this was incredibly awkward, at least until we found out it was a joke. This Wheel of Fortune contestant named Blair used his introduction to quip about his "loveless marriage" and for a second he really had us going. Of course he was joking, but the shock of this highly unusual gameshow intro is still with us.

16. That video bomb

One minute you're getting ready, brushing your teeth, dancing, making a fun video, and having a good time. The next? You're on the ground wondering what the hell just happened and why you're in pain. Then, it hits you: Your roommate just decked you with a caution sign and stole your perfectly harmless video. This viral moment served as a "cautionary" tale about wild and hilarious roommates.

17. Football Cat

Cats would take over the world if we let them, and this 2019 moment of a cat running onto the field during Monday Night Football promptly reminded us of that. The cat stole the show and became the internet's latest obsession. It's as if everyone forgot there was a game happening right in front of them.

Parts of this list were featured in "Best viral videos of 2019 (so far)" earlier this year.

New Year's: UK sees in 2020 with 'best fireworks London has ever seen' - Metro.co.uk

The capital has brought in 2020 with 'the best fireworks London has ever seen' as the UK enters one of its most important decades yet.

More than 100,000 have gathered around Victoria Embankment and cheered as they watched the impressive display light up the sky above the River Thames, to the soundtrack of some of the country's biggest hits.

Big Ben's chimes loudly rang out 12 times signifying the start of the display, before around 12,000 dramatic fireworks exploded in the air featuring music songs by Stormzy, Wiley and Bastille.

The theme of this year's display is based on London hosting a number of key games such in the Euro 2020 football tournament and the crowds could be heard proudly chanting 'it's coming home' towards the end of the show.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said he hoped the display would show the world that it is still a confident 'global city', as the UK prepares to leave the EU in the new year.

He said: 'Fairly or unfairly, people around the world saw the Brexit referendum vote as the UK somehow turning its back on the rest of the world, including Europe.

'The fear was, we would become insular, inward-looking, and what I'm keen to show is the opposite…

'And it's really important that we show the world who will be watching our fireworks that we are a confident, global, outward-looking European city.'

London's event sold out and travel on Transport for London (TfL) services will be free between 11.45pm on New Year's Eve and 4.30am on New Year's Day.

Meanwhile, Hogmanay celebrations began in Edinburgh, as crowds gathered for the city's annual street party, with around 100,000 visitors expected to attend the event.

Large fireworks shows will also take place in cities including Manchester, Cardiff, Newcastle, Inverness and Nottingham.

As Brits celebrated across the country, the prime minister focused the next decade's attention on Brexit and told the public it could look forward to 10 years of 'prosperity and opportunity'.

Boris Johnson will be watching London's display from television, as he is bringing in the next decade with girlfriend Carrie Symonds on the private Caribbean island of Mustique.

In his New Year message, the PM said that with the UK set to leave the EU on January 31, the Government could focus on the 'people's priorities'.

'As we say goodbye to 2019 we can also turn the page on the division, rancour and uncertainty which has dominated public life and held us back for far too long,' he added.

'We can start a new chapter in the history of our country, in which we come together and move forward united, unleashing the enormous potential of the British people.'

He said although the 'first item' on his agenda was to take Brexit out of the EU as soon as possible, he wants to be a 'prime minister for everyone', including the millions who backed Remain or did not vote Conservative in the general election.

'If you are one of them, I want to reassure you that I will be a prime minister for everyone, not just those who voted for me,' he said.

'I know that you love this country no less, simply because you voted for another party or wanted to Remain.

'More than that, I want to work with you, as friends and equals, as we build the future this United Kingdom deserves.

'So let's together make the 2020s a decade of prosperity and opportunity.'

He reiterated that the main concern on people's lists of priorities was more investment in the NHS.

'The NHS is a wonderful British invention, there for us and our families when we are ill, whatever our background and regardless of ability to pay. So the NHS will always be my top priority.'

Mr Johnson said he was also determined to make the UK 'the best place on Earth' for 'quality education and cutting-edge science'.

'Our vision is clear: to unite and level up across the whole United Kingdom – spreading opportunity more fairly – with better infrastructure, superb education and high technology,' he said.

This is a breaking story, more to follow…

Mobile public safety director defends officers in viral ‘homeless quilt’ photo - AL.com

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:29 PM PST

Mobile's executive director of public safety defended on Tuesday the two city police officers who were photographed in an "insensitive" viral social media post in which they posed next to what one of them called a "homeless quilt."

James Barber, who oversees the police and fire departments and is a former police chief himself, said that Officers Preston McGraw and Alexandre Oliver are "good officers" who showed "bad judgment."

"It was taken out of humor but, again, it was in bad taste and certainly offensive to a lot of people in making light of homeless situations," Barber said to AL.com, referring to the picture of McGraw and Oliver standing next to confiscated cardboard signs from people who allegedly were asking for handouts.

The signs were taped together and contained messages for help. McGraw and Oliver were photographed standing next to the "quilt" inside the Mobile Police Department. The image was posted to social media with the text, "Wanna wish everybody in the 4th precinct a Merry Christmas, especially our captain. Hope you enjoy our homeless quilt! Sincerely, Panhandler patrol."

Barber said, "It shouldn't overshadow the incredible work that Mobile police do every day. I certainly hate the fact it's reflected unfavorably on the Police Department because I do know the incredible work they do in keeping citizens safe."

Defending police

Barber's comments come one day after Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste, long an advocate for homeless people, apologized for the actions of the two officers and for the "insensitive gesture," which has been shared all over social media.

Charlette Solis, spokeswoman with the Mobile Police Department, said an administrative investigation is underway. The results could lead to determining what kind of corrective action is needed, she said. Both officers remain on active duty while the investigation is underway.

"We will take corrective action," Barber said.

Barber defended the department and police, in general, by citing what has been a difficult year for officer safety in Alabama. As of Monday, Alabama has experienced six law enforcement shooting deaths while in the line of duty during 2019, including the Jan. 20 killing of Mobile Police Officer Sean Tuder.

Overall, there have been seven law enforcement officers in Alabama who were killed while working in the line of duty. Only three states with much larger populations – California, New York and Texas – have had more during the past year.

"We have a Mobile Police Department that people should be proud of," said Barber. "Don't let one bad judgement call overshadow that. I guess the plane that lands won't be as spectacular as the one that crashes."

Asked if he thought the picture could lead to a social media policy change, Barber said, "I think all of us, and certainly the Police Department and citizens as well, have to be mindful of how we post on social media. It can be misinterpreted and go viral and cause a great deal of concern. But it should never outweigh the really good nature of these two officers and that they do their job every day."

He said the department's officers undergo sensitivity, implied bias and cultural diversity training. Barber served as Mobile's police chief from 2013-2017, when he was appointed to his current position.

Public statements

Barber didn't specifically mention the incident during his public remarks at Tuesday's council meeting. But he did continue to praise his department, as a whole, during the recognition of the Mobile Police Department's "Officer of the Month."

"It's fitting that we recognize the incredible work done that often times goes unnoticed," said Barber, acknowledging that police often face an "overdose of criticism."

Mobile City Council President Levon Manzie said he felt it was "unfortunate" that a small number of officers or actions can harm the profession. "We have fine first responders here in the city of Mobile," he said.

Afterward, Manzie told AL.com that he agreed with Battiste's position.

"I am happy that along with the leadership of the Police Department, will be taking corrective measures internally," Manzie said.
