Patrik Laine scored for the Jets, who failed to capitalize on five power plays in the second period. Winnipeg has lost seven of its last eight. Laurent Brossoit stopped 23 shots.

The defeat extended Winnipeg's longest losing streak of the season. The Jets are 1-7-1 in their last nine homes games.

Manchester United complete surprise loan signing of Ighalo - Goal.com

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:36 PM PST

Manchester United have signed attacker Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of the season.

The Red Devils began hunting for an extra striker after seeing top scorer Marcus Rashford sidelined for three months with a serious back injury earlier this month.

The likes of Raul Jimenez, Edinson Cavani and Danny Ings have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks, but some surprise names also began to crop up as the winter transfer deadline edged ever closer.

Article continues below

United reportedly enquired about loan deals for Leicester's Islam Slimani and Bournemouth forward Josh King, before ex-Watford frontman Ighalo emerged as their primary target.

After successful negotiations on deadline day, Ighalo will arrive at Old Trafford on a short-term deal in the coming days with Solskjaer excited to add to his attack.

"Odion is an experienced player. He will come in and give us an option of a different type of centre-forward for the short spell he's staying with us," he said.

"A great lad and very professional, he will make the most of his time here."

Ighalo, a childhood fan of the Red Devils, played for Watford between 2014 and 2017, scoring 20 goals in 30 Championship appearances to help the team gain promotion during his first full season at the club.

He transferred that form into the Premier League the following campaign, contributing 15 goals to the Hornets' cause as they successfully avoided the drop.

Ighalo was far less prolific in his final season at Vicarage Road however and ended up leaving the club to join Changchun Yatai in January 2017.

The Nigeria international scored 36 goals in 55 outings for the Chinese Super League club, before securing a move to Shanghai Shenhua last year.

Ighalo continued to find the back of the net regularly at club level in 2019, while also making his mark on the international stage.

He scored five goals during Nigeria's run to the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations, including the winning strike in their third-place playoff victory over Tunisia.

United will hope that Ighalo can produce the same kind of form over the next few months, as they fight for a place in the top four and in turn secure a return to the Champions League.

Solskjaer's newest signing is set to fly to Manchester from China in the coming days meaning he won't feature against Wolves at Old Trafford on Sunday, where  fellow January signing Bruno Fernandes could make his debut.

Hasty Pudding honors actress Elizabeth Banks - The Boston Globe

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:10 PM PST

Amid cheerleaders, trumpet players, and costumed performers, actress and filmmaker Elizabeth Banks paraded through the Harvard campus Friday afternoon as the Hasty Pudding Theatricals Woman of the Year.

"We are so proud to honor a filmmaker who has made it her own mission to support the arts," said Hasty Pudding Theatricals president Eli Russell.

During a traditional roast after the parade, the burlesque musical comedy group shepherded Banks through a series of cheeky activities. They instructed her to mime with a sock puppet, sing '90s anthem "Ice Ice Baby," and kiss a cardboard cutout of former costar Paul Rudd.

Two Hasty members, dressed as a baby and a cow, pecked Banks on both cheeks to round out the roast.

As ever, the troupe graced the honoree with a tiny gold Pudding Pot.

As the 70th woman feted by the Hasty Pudding, Banks joined a famed list of honorees including Meryl Streep, Scarlett Johansson, and Kerry Washington.

It was something of a homecoming for Banks, who grew up in the Western Massachusetts town of Pittsfield.

Banks has appeared in "The Hunger Game" franchise, "The Lego Movie" series, and "Love and Mercy." She also directed, wrote, produced, and appeared in "Charlie's Angels," which opened in November 2019.

Banks will also costar in the much-anticipated FX series "Mrs. America" with Cate Blanchett, Uzo Aduba, Rose Byrne, and Sarah Paulson.

Though women worked behind the scenes at the Hasty for years, the troupe only began casting women in 2018.

"Hasty Pudding is just one of those truly progressive institutions," Banks said sarcastically in the press conference. "You were founded and a mere 100-something years later, you let women join the party."

The roast was followed by a preview of "Mean Ghouls," the troupe's second production featuring men and women.

So what does Banks, a University of Pennsylvania alum, think of her alma mater's rivalry with Harvard?

"There's not much of a rivalry," Banks joked. "I believe Penn is a much better institution."

Broomfield native Abraham Rodriguez could be Colorado Rapids’ future in goal - The Denver Post

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:06 PM PST

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Chris Sharpe wasn't even looking for Abraham Rodriguez the day he discovered him.

The Colorado Rapids goalie coach was watching a Rapids Academy game about five years ago when someone tapped him on the shoulder and pointed to the field behind Sharpe. "Have a look at this kid."

And there Rodriguez was, an undersized, athletic kid who kept making spectacular plays.

"He came from nowhere," Sharpe said. "I turned around and here's this little kid darting around making unbelievable saves but super raw like no technique, no coaching. … We monitored him for a bit, but we had to have him."

Now 17, everything points toward Rodriguez becoming the newest homegrown talent within the Rapids organization. Already a professional, he signed a full-time contract with the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in August, where he shined in 2019. Named to the USL's 20-under-20 list, Rodriguez was the club's primary goalie.

"There were nice moments down with the Switchbacks," the Broomfield native said. "I realized that I always had that fire in me to be on the next level. Even right now you know I'm still at a point where I want to move up to the next level and be the best I can be."

Currently, Rodriguez is with the Rapids at their preseason camp here in California.

The retirement of Tim Howard moved everyone up a spot on the Rapids' depth chart. With Clint Irwin and Andre Rawls the top options with the big club, it is likely Rodriguez spends most of the season starting for the Switchbacks. As the only one of the three under 25, he has plenty of time to develop into the Rapids' goaltender of the future.

"It's great playing with the older players," Rodriguez said. "The role of a goalie is being a leader and I have to be confident."

Rodriguez's goal is to be starting in burgundy and blue.

"Coming from the community I came from, stepping on the Rapids field would be awesome," he said. "Representing the Hispanic community would mean the world to me. I want to bring that Latino community with me out to the games."

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC

Broomfield native Abraham Rodriguez made a big impression with the Colorado Springs Switchbacks last season and is hoping to soon find a place with the Colorado Rapids.

Rodriguez is already known for the highlight saves he made after blocking two penalties last season in US. It's a captivating style that could very well win over the Rapids fan base.

At 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, he is a far cry from the typical burly goaltender used in the American game. While that may mean he initially gets overlooked, there are things he does that will undoubtedly turn heads.

Just ask the Rapids' Sharpe.

"It's not teachable," Sharpe said. "You can work on the big saves, but the biggest thing is that he does not want to get beaten. He's enjoyable to watch because he makes things that are hard look very simple."

Footnote. Two other Colorado teens from the Rapids Academy are also training with the team this month. Will Vint, 18, could be the next in line to go professional and Darren Yapi, a 15-year-old freshman at Northfield High School, is also here. Vint, a midfielder, spent time with that Manchester United Academy and then Atlanta United 2 of the USL. He is likely to see minutes with the Switchbacks and is spending camp shadowing Jack Price and Kellyn Acosta. Yapi was recently called up to the US U-17 national team as a forward and this is his first pro camp.

Cases of Wuhan coronavirus continue to rise rapidly as US bans travel from China - CNN

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:40 PM PST

According to Chinese health authorities, the number of confirmed cases grew by 2,102 on Friday, bringing the total to 11,791 nationwide. An additional 45 people died in Hubei -- the province at the epicenter of the outbreak -- and one person died in the megacity of Chongqing on Friday, as the number of fatalities reached 259.
The pronounced increase in cases and deaths show the virus is not slowing, even after over a week of much of Hubei being under partial quarantine and an extended Lunar New Year holiday. With most of China due to return to work on Monday, the concern will be how far the virus will now spread, and whether the country's economy can bear the type of further quarantines and travel restrictions that may be necessary to rein it in.
Washington announced Friday that it will impose a 14-day travel ban on all visitors from China, regardless of their nationality. US citizens arriving from Hubei, of which Wuhan is the capital, will have to undergo 14-days mandatory quarantine on arrival, while those traveling any other part of China will face screening and monitoring.
The mandatory quarantine is the first time the US has issued such an order in 50 years. The move came as the seventh case of the virus was confirmed in the US, an adult male in California who recently traveled to Wuhan.
China criticized the move, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying saying it went against World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations not to impose travel bans.
"A friend in need is a friend indeed. Many countries have offered China support in various means," she said. "In sharp contrast, certain US officials' words and actions are neither factual nor appropriate."
It may be part of a growing trend, however. The US ban comes after Singapore banned all visitors from mainland China, saying anyone who had been in the country in the past 14 days will not be able to visit or transit through the city state. Taiwan has also suspended visa applications for Chinese nationals, and banned entry to any from Hubei province.
Other countries have seen a wave of ugly xenophobia and racism directed at Chinese travelers and those of Chinese heritage. In a statement last week, health authorities in Toronto warned concerns about the virus and misinformation were creating "unnecessary stigma against members of our community."

How long will it go on?

China has allocated almost $4 billion to the fight against the virus, and sent thousands of doctors, nurses and military medics to Hubei to help out with relief in the epicenter of the outbreak.
Two purpose-built hospitals in Wuhan, constructed in under a week, are due to start accepting patients on Monday and Thursday respectively. They have 2,500 beds between them, and will be focused purely on dealing with confirmed and suspected cases of the coronavirus, providing some relief to Wuhan's stretched health system.
On Friday, the country's National Health Commission (NHC) said it was "confident in and capable of effectively containing the novel coronavirus epidemic, and eventually defeating it," following the WHO's classification of the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
The Lunar New Year holiday will be extended in Hubei to an "appropriate extent," the Communist Party group in charge of the virus response said Friday. People in Hubei who work elsewhere in the country were also "granted an extended holiday and were asked to stay put," according to state-run news agency Xinhua.
It remains unclear, however, how long parts of the country can continue to remain under lockdown, both from the perspective of making sure they are supplied with food and other necessary items, and from an economic point -- both the national finances and people's personal pocketbooks will be taking a massive hit from next week.
Worst of all, this sacrifice could be for nothing, with cases now reported in every province and region of China.
Researchers in Hong Kong on Friday estimated there could be more than 75,000 people in Wuhan alone infected with the virus. They warned that their model suggested that "epidemics are already growing exponentially in multiple major cities of China with a lag time behind the Wuhan outbreak of about 1-2 weeks."
Study author Gabriel Leung, chair of public health medicine at University of Hong Kong, said in a statement that their predicted number could be much higher than confirmed cases because "not everyone who is infected with (the virus) would require or seek medical attention," thus many may go uncounted. It may also be impacted by the delay between when someone gets infected, when they show symptoms, and when a lab is able to confirm.
Leung and his colleagues' findings come as researchers in the US and Germany confirmed previous suspicions that the virus could be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
"There's no doubt after reading this paper that asymptomatic transmission is occurring," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, after the research was published Friday. "This study lays the question to rest."

Foreigners flee

With much of Hubei under effective quarantine for the foreseeable future, countries have begun airlifting their citizens from the stricken province. Two dozens countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and South Korea, have chartered planes to carry diplomats and citizens out of Wuhan.
Air traffic in the opposite direction is becoming increasingly sparse. More than 15 international carriers, including British Airways, Air Canada and American Airlines, have suspended some or all flights to and from mainland China.
Markets have dropped across the world on news of the virus' spread, and the expected hit to China's economy that it will result in.
The economic impact of the virus is still impossible to determine, but one state media outlet and some economists have said that China's growth rate could drop two percentage points this quarter because of the outbreak, which has brought large parts of the country to a standstill. A decline on that scale could mean $62 billion in lost growth.
China can ill afford that kind of hit. Growth last year was already the country's weakest in nearly three decades, as China contended with rising debt and the fallout from its trade war with the US.
Major banks have cut interest rates for small businesses and individuals in the worst-hit areas. And the Bank of China said it would allow people in Wuhan and the rest of Hubei province to delay their loan payments for several months if they lose their source of income because of the disruption.
Both tourism and China's film industry are taking a major hit already, with box office receipts at almost nothing since the outbreak. The spread of the coronavirus also threatens to cause job losses and push consumer prices higher, compounding economic woes that already exist.

For Trump administration, coronavirus quarantine presents a fine balancing act - CNBC

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:10 PM PST

Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar and members of the Trump Administration's Coronavirus Task Force hold a press briefing at the White House on January 31, 2020 in Washington, DC.

U.S. health officials have instituted a mandatory 14-day quarantine of Americans traveling from China, starting this Sunday, marking an extraordinary step in the Trump administration's efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus which has sickened more than 10,000 people in Mainland China.

"I want to stress the risk of infection for Americans remains low, and with these and our previous actions, we are working to keep the risk," Azar said Friday, as he declared a public health emergency due to the virus.

The emergency declaration provides funding for states and local health officials to deal with the viral outbreak, and flexibility to reassign federal health workers in their communities to help with the response. It is a measure often enacted during national disasters.

This is the first time the U.S. has declared a public emergency due to viral contagion since the outbreak of the Swine Flu epidemic between 2009 and 2010, and the first time in 50 years that the U.S. has imposed a mandatory quarantine order. Federal health officials have resisted such extraordinary measures until now.

"The problem of enacting a quarantine is that it's such a disruptive social measure, economically, socially, culturally … that you only use it as your last resort, like your nuclear option," said Dr. Howard Markel, professor at the University of Michigan school of public health, who has studied quarantines and epidemics. "They can work if they're done very early, but only as a temporary measure to tamp down cases," Markel explained, adding that it is prudent to check and observe travelers who may have been exposed to a new "poorly understood easily transmittable infection."

Former health officials say mandatory restrictions on travel present a difficult balancing act, between proactively trying to contain a virus, while at the same time trying not to be too heavy-handed.

"The way virus spreads and the way in which you combat it is a lot like a forest fire … find it early and be able to smother it before it spreads," said Michael Leavitt, former Health and Human Services Secretary during the George W. Bush administration.

In China, the government estimates five million people left Hubei province before travel restrictions were imposed. For the 50 million people who remain on lock-down in the region, travel restrictions are now entering their second week.

"I don't think that's necessarily something that that's irrational in their situation," said Leavitt, but added "it's quite unproductive, in most cases, to try to restrict movement to the point that commerce just can't move because truthfully, that means the supply chain isn't operating."

Beyond the potential economic dislocations that arise from quarantines, most experts say widespread mandatory restrictions are not the best tool to contain an epidemic. In Liberia, mandatory quarantine measures during the deadly Ebola outbreak five years ago, it resulted in a massive public backlash.

"It caused a lot of protests. People found it difficult to get the things they needed like food, and work to support their families," Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

"When governments take very heavy-handed measures … If (people) don't perceive those to be in their best interest, then, I really worry about the ability to implement other control measures that we know are going to be effective," she said.

Secretary Azar has been mindful of the need to maintain public trust. Last week he told CNBC that transparency is key part of containing the spread of the coronavirus, to get people who are infected to seek treatment and to help track down others who they may have exposed to the virus.

"This is what solves public health outbreaks of infectious disease. It has in every instance in the past. It's what we did with the latest measles outbreak. It's what we're doing now," he said.

Still, on Friday Azar warned that if the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S. likely rises over the coming days and weeks, the administration will continue to evaluate what further measures may be necessary.

American, Delta and United airlines suspend most US- China flights amid coronavirus outbreak - CNN

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:10 PM PST

For American Airlines, the nation's largest carrier, the decision comes after the union representing 15,000 pilots sued the company Thursday to immediately halt its US-China service, citing "serious, and in many ways still unknown, health threats posed by the coronavirus."
American (AAL) moved up its planned suspension of flights between the United States and mainland China beginning Friday. It had originally announced that flights between Los Angeles and Shanghai and Los Angeles and Beijing would be suspended from February 9. Its Hong Kong flights will continue to operate.
"Based on the U.S. Department of State's recent increase of the China Travel Advisory to a Level 4 (Do Not Travel), American is suspending its operations to and from the Chinese mainland beginning today through March 27," American said in a statement.
The union applauded the move. "Now that American is ceasing operations in China, the ultimate goal is that all our passengers and crew will remain safe and that was our main goal," Captain Dennis Tajer, a spokesperson for the Allied Pilots Association, told CNN Business.
Airlines around the world are suspending flights to China as the coronavirus spreads
Delta said Friday it was suspending all flights from the United States to China from February 6 until April 30. The airline said it's continuing routes until February 5 to "ensure customers looking to exit China have options to do so." It said that it will "continue to monitor the situation closely" and adjust its schedule accordingly.
Affected customers can request a refund, rebook their flight after the suspension lifts or speak with an agent for other options. Delta (DAL) currently operates 42 weekly flights between the United States and China, including daily service connecting Beijing and Detroit and Seattle, and Shanghai and Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles and Seattle.
United Airlines (UAL) also said Friday it was suspending flights from is US hub cities and Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai from February 6 to March 28. Until next week, the carrier will "operate select flights to help ensure our US-based employees, as well as customers, have options to return home," it said in a statement. United will continue to fly one daily route between San Francisco and Hong Kong.
The coronavirus, a potentially fatal respiratory disease, first emerged in Wuhan, China in early December and has since spread across China and appeared in some other countries, including the United States, Japan and India. The World Health Organization has declared the coronavirus epidemic a public health emergency of international concern.
Fears over the spread of the disease has forced both US and global carriers to amend their schedules as demand for China travel declines.
British Airways, Air Asia, Cathay Pacific, Air India, IndiGo, Lufthansa and Finnair have announced plans this week to slash the number of flights they are operating to China or stop flying to the country entirely. Other airlines are offering customers refunds.

Manchester United complete surprise loan signing of Ighalo - Goal.com

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:06 PM PST

Manchester United have signed attacker Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of the season.

The Red Devils began hunting for an extra striker after seeing top scorer Marcus Rashford sidelined for three months with a serious back injury earlier this month.

The likes of Raul Jimenez, Edinson Cavani and Danny Ings have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks, but some surprise names also began to crop up as the winter transfer deadline edged ever closer.

Article continues below

He scored five goals during Nigeria's run to the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations, including the winning strike in their third-place playoff victory over Tunisia.

United will hope that Ighalo can produce the same kind of form over the next few months, as they fight for a place in the top four and in turn secure a return to the Champions League.

Solskjaer's newest signing is set to fly to Manchester from China in the coming days meaning he won't feature against Wolves at Old Trafford on Sunday, where  fellow January signing Bruno Fernandes could make his debut.

Evgeny Kuznetsov just scored this Now You See Me-ass goal - Russian Machine Never Breaks

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:06 PM PST

The Washington Capitals are rinsing the Ottawa Senators so far on Friday night. Evgeny Kuznetsov made that domination show up on the scoreboard with this close-up street magic Criss Angel-ass goal.

Jakub Vrana drew the play — and Ottawa goalie Marcus Hogberg — into one corner, then promptly sent the puck to the opposite corner, where Kuznetsov was waiting. Before you could blink, the puck was buried under the white apron of the net.

From above:

Hogberg had no idea as he splayed out in front of Kuznetsov.

The fans, the play-by-play team, and even the on-ice Capitals were not immediately aware that a goal had been scored. Upon learning, they sure seemed amused.

Kuznetsov now has 17 goals on the season.

Tell Your Mama: T-Mobile’s Back in Super Bowl LIV - Yahoo Finance

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:46 PM PST

The spot features the hilarious and talented duo, Anthony Anderson and his real-life mama Doris putting T-Mobile's nationwide #5GThatWorks to the test.

Plus, the Un-carrier is giving away five 5G smartphones, every five minutes throughout the game.

Mama knows best. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) is back in the Super Bowl! Check out "Mama Tests 5G," starring Golden Globe and six-time Emmy nominee Anthony Anderson, and his real-life mama, Doris Hancox, right now here. In the spot, Doris puts T-Mobile's nationwide 5G network through its paces — from the beach, to her home, in an elevator and beyond. The 60-second spot will air during the fourth quarter on Sunday.

Plus, the Un-carrier is giving fans the opportunity to put T-Mobile's nationwide 5G to the test, just like Mama, with the first and only nationwide 5G phone giveaway ever. T-Mobile will give away five brand-new free Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G smartphones every five minutes throughout the entire game from kickoff to final buzzer! Fans can enter every quarter by tweeting #5GThat Works and #Contest for a chance to win. And EVERYONE can play, not just T-Mobile customers. Follow T-Mobile on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for more!

"Everyone knows, mamas don't mess around — and neither does T-Mobile. This year we came to play in the Super Bowl!" said John Legere, T-Mobile CEO. "And I can't think of a better combo than this hilarious real-life mother/son duo to share the story of our 5G network. Only T-Mobile has nationwide 5G. Go tell your mama!"

Last year, T-Mobile launched America's first — and still only — nationwide 5G network. The Un-carrier's 5G network covers more than 1 million square miles and reaches over 200 million people. Unlike Verizon 5G that can get blocked by walls, windows, people and even an umbrella and covers spotty patches of outdoor areas in just 34 cities, T-Mobile 5G provides far reaching coverage that can go through walls and works indoors and out in more than 5,000 cities and towns. And in parts of seven urban areas, T-Mobile has millimeter wave 5G for speedy, hotspot-like coverage outdoors.

If T-Mobile's merger with Sprint closes, the New T-Mobile will have the ability to build on this foundation by adding critical mid-band spectrum for far-reaching coverage and performance as well as additional millimeter wave spectrum for blazing-fast speeds in dense urban areas. Only this combination will deliver a 5G network with both coverage breadth and depth of performance.

Why Hope Is Fading for Sprint and T-Mobile - The Wall Street Journal

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:46 PM PST

Makan Delrahim, chief of the Justice Department's antitrust division, speaks in Laguna Beach, Calif., Oct. 22, 2019. Photo: Martina Albertazzi/Bloomberg News

In a 1931 essay, Winston Churchill marveled and fretted over the accelerating pace of industrial and technological change, predicting the cellphone and much else. He also acknowledged that the only solution for the problems of progress was more progress: "Mankind has gone too far to go back. . . . There are too many people maintained, not merely in comfort but in existence, by processes unknown a century ago."

Why does this apply to T-Mobile and its struggling partner Sprint ? Because their proposed wireless-industry merger is in deep trouble thanks to a regulatory circus that does little either to temper bad progress or facilitate good progress.

Though the nation's two expert agencies, the Justice Department and Federal Communications Commission, approved the deal with tweaks, 13 states, led by the attorneys general of New York and California, are suing to block it. They would be the first to deny it, but theirs is a campy exercise in "resistance" politics. Sadly, the Justice Department's Makan Delrahim outwitted himself and may have given them the means to prevail.

His FCC colleagues supported the deal with modest adjustments, but he decided he needed a more convoluted fix to appease antitrust critics. Now this fix is the deal's main weakness before a judge. And unhelpful were text messages introduced at trial showing him urging various interested parties, including Charlie Ergen of Dish Network, to get behind his fiddling. The New York Times delighted in editorializing that Mr. Delrahim's "campaign to secure Dish's participation amounted to a concerted effort to satisfy his own objections to the proposed deal."

Well sort of. His fix consisted of goodies dangled in front of Mr. Ergen, to lure him into becoming the country's fourth "national, facilities-based wireless operator," the role Sprint would be vacating by merging with T-Mobile.

The quotes need to be there for a reason. A decade ago, Justice opined that four such carriers were necessary to maintain competition, but this dubious axiom, which has never been tested and belongs to a different era, Mr. Delrahim apparently felt powerless to junk.

Then, the industry was growing; now the big challenge is how to provide growing bandwidth to a nongrowing customer base, at a steadily declining cost per bit. Teens use their smartphones to keep live video chat sessions open all day long, even when they have nothing to talk about. Consolidation may be the only way operators can invest to serve such emerging, hard-to-predict "5G" uses without going broke. Remember, this is happening at a time when 5G means cable operators will also be coming after wireless customers.

And yet, to hear the deal's opponents tell it, nothing has changed since the iPhone appeared in 2007. Federal District Judge Victor Marrero was urged to ignore the cable giants Comcast and Charter, though their extensive wired and Wi-Fi networks give them a substantial leg-up in the coming 5G "small cell" era.

The judge was urged to ignore the possible entry into the wireless fray of the big cloud operators Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft, never mind that just such a deal was the rumored subject of closed-door testimony by Mr. Ergen.

He was urged even to ignore the existence of today's thriving reseller industry, though these resellers wouldn't exist if they didn't have a marketing edge over the big four incumbents when it comes to certain consumer demographics.

Most implausibly, he was urged to believe Sprint and T-Mobile want to merge so AT&T and Verizon can raise prices. That is, the partners would shoulder the costs and risks of a deal for benefits that mostly accrue to their bigger rivals.

Alas, based on a statement by Judge Marrero to expect a quick ruling, Sprint stock has tanked. Mr. Delrahim's acrobatics were likely well-meaning—to help the economy keep evolving despite hurdles created by his own agency's precedents. The job of every honest appointee, after all, is partly to protect America from the bureaucracy. But he outsmarted himself by conceding that the deal was anticompetitive, if only by the lights of an antiquated and untested Obama-era axiom, and then proposing a fix the judge would be hard-pressed to believe in.

A better approach would have been a confident and unequivocal unanimity by Justice and the FCC, saying the deal, with modest tweaks, advances the public interest in a dynamic, competitive broadband industry. Then the judge would have had something to work with against the arguments of the opponents. Churchill was prescient in anticipating cell service. He would have needed a darker crystal ball to anticipate a regulatory culture that steadily undermines the ability of technology to find answers to the challenges created by technology.

The week's best and worst from Kim Strassel, Kyle Peterson and Dan Henninger. Image: C-Span

Former actress testifies that Harvey Weinstein raped her and that he had a 'fragile ego' - CNN

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:10 PM PST

Editor's note: The following article contains sexually explicit language.
Jessica Mann took the stand Friday in Weinstein's trial in New York. Her testimony is connected to the most serious of the five charges against the Hollywood movie tycoon.
Mann described meeting Weinstein in Los Angeles in 2012 or 2013, how he seemed interested in her acting career and how the interactions went from discussions about the movie industry to two alleged rapes.
Harvey Weinstein assured a woman that he had a vasectomy before allegedly raping her, she testifies
Prosecutors have said Weinstein raped and sexually assaulted young women, including Mann, over the course of decades. Weinstein's lead attorney, Donna Rotunno, attacked the credibility of Mann's stories on Friday, suggesting instead that Mann lied and manipulated Weinstein.
Mann testified that whenever she spoke to Weinstein, she used "exaggerated" flattery and compliments because "his ego was fragile." She said several times that she was afraid to "trigger an anger" from Weinstein.
Weinstein's attorneys have described Mann's relationship with their client as consensual and "loving," and have highlighted one text that Mann sent to Harvey in February 2017.
"I love you, I always do. but I hate feeling like a booty call. :)" she wrote, according to attorney Damon Cheronis.

He'd talk about acting and offered scripts for a film, she says

Mann, who grew up in a small town in Washington state, met Weinstein at a party in Los Angeles in 2012 or 2013 when she was 25. In court, she recalled how he offered to teach her about the "history of the business" and met with him in several places, including a bookstore and an Italian restaurant.
But she said Weinstein asked her for a massage during what she thought was a professional dinner at the Peninsula Hotel in Los Angeles. She testified that she "very awkwardly" gave Weinstein a massage while he lay on the bed face down still wearing his pants.
Mann testified that Weinstein made her feel "stupid" and told her she was making a big deal when she said she didn't want to give him a massage.
After that incident Mann started receiving invitations to events and sometimes would still meet Weinstein to talk about acting. At one point, they met following a party and Weinstein told her that he would give her and a friend scripts for a film once they went to his suite. That night, he forced her to have oral sex, Mann testified.
Former production assistant testifies that Harvey Weinstein pinned her down and assaulted her
Mann said she fought to get away from him but eventually gave in and faked an orgasm to make him stop.
She testified about having "non-forcible sex" with Weinstein on multiple occasions over time as recent as 2016 and how they began a relationship, which she described as abusive.
Her relationship with Weinstein felt "like being discarded." He could be charming and informative but "behind closed doors it would be dependent upon if I gave him what he wanted," Mann said.
"It was like Jekyll and Hyde," Mann said of Weinstein's demeanor toward her.

He raped her at a hotel in New York, she testified

Weinstein first raped her in 2013 at a DoubleTree hotel in New York where he was supposed to meet her and her friends for breakfast, she testified.
Mann tried to stop him from getting a room, sort of causing a scene, and Weinstein pulled her away from the front desk and told her not to embarrass him. Inside the hotel room, she tried to run out, but he slammed the door twice as she grabbed the handle.
She then followed his orders to undress and get on the bed. He sounded "like a drill sergeant," Mann said.
Weinstein then laid on top of her and raped her, she testified.
After the alleged raped, Mann and Weinstein met her two friends for breakfast because she didn't want them to know what happened, Mann testified.
These are the women who plan to testify against Harvey Weinstein
Sometime later, Mann met Weinstein at the Peninsula Hotel in Los Angeles, where she had worked as a hairstylist, and told him that she was dating an actor. The producer became angry, yanked her up from a chair and screamed, "you owe me one more time," she testified sobbing.
Weinstein then demanded she take her clothes off and when she refused, Mann said, he ripped her pants "so hard and so fast off of me that I had three scratches down each leg to the top of my thighs to right above my knee."
He forcibly performed oral sex and raped her, she testified.
"I couldn't breathe he was so heavy on me," Mann said. "I just remember looking at the TV and staring at it."
Afterward, Weinstein told her that she could have her relationship now and become his "wing girl," Mann said.
He then apologized and justified the assault saying, "I just find you so attractive I couldn't resist," she recalled.
"We're friends, right?" Weinstein added, according to Mann.

Defense says woman manipulated Weinstein

During cross-examination, Rotunno asked Mann whether she was using Weinstein and not the other way around.
Rotunno suggested that Mann tried to hide her relationship from her friend during their 2013 trip to New York because he was an agent in the industry and Mann was going to introduce him to Weinstein as a favor.
When Rotunno said that it would reflect badly on Mann if her friend knew of her sexual encounters with Weinstein, Mann agreed with her.
The defense questioned Mann about pretending to want consensual sex with Weinstein and lying to her friends about their relationship.
Mann was asked to read an excerpt from her personal blog in which she details a three-way sexual encounter similar to one she testified to earlier on Friday. She said the blog post was meant to be "expounded on" comedy and not meant to reflect all of the exact details of the incident.
The blog post describes an encounter that she planned with an older man and a beautiful Italian woman. In her post, she wrote that she stopped the three-way because she didn't like it but did not mention that she ran to the bathroom crying, as she testified in court. The blog post does not explicitly name Weinstein.
Weinstein's attorneys requested a mistrial twice on Friday, but the judge denied both motions. They claimed prosecutors withheld the existence of witnesses who could corroborate testimony from model Tarale Wulff, another of Weinstein's accusers. Later in the day, they said prosecutors withheld evidence about consensual sexual interactions between Mann and the producer.
Mann will return to the stand Monday to resume cross-examination.

Ighalo not the right player for Manchester United - Warnock - Goal.com

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:06 PM PST

Former Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has slammed Manchester United for trying to sign Shanghai Shenhua forward Odion Ighalo this month.

United are currently in search of attacking options following Marcus Rashford's back injury, and they have reportedly identified the former Watford striker as a potential signing on a temporary deal.

Ighalo left the Premier League in 2017 to join Changchun Yatai in the Chinese Super League where he spent two seasons before moving to Shanghai last February.

While speculations about a return to England continue to swirl, Warnock disclosed that the 30-year-old is not the right option for the Red Devils as he revealed his previous experience with his representatives back at Cardiff.

"I tried to sign Ighalo when I was at Cardiff. His salary was over six figures a week, £100,000, something like that. His agent tells you one thing, then the other," Warnock told Sky Sports News.

"Manchester United won't have that problem with the terms. I'm not sure he's the right player for United. He's not consistent and isn't the right type of player.

"They want young players. Why didn't they go for Danny Ings? He's someone similar to Marcus Rashford. It's desperation."

A Tale of 4 Telecom Giants: Is the T-Mobile-Sprint Merger Inevitable? - Yahoo Finance

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:46 PM PST

In April 2018, John Legere, the CEO of T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS), made the long-expected announcement that T-Mobile and Sprint (NYSE:S) had reached an agreement to merge in a $26 billion all-stock deal. The merger was tentatively approved by the Federal Communications Commission on June 28, 2018, and then the regulatory review process began. In July 2019, the merger received the approval of the U.S. Justice Department.

"This isn't a case of going from four to three wireless companies -- there are now at least seven or eight big competitors in this converging market," Legere said after the justice department approved the deal. "And in 5G, we'll go from 0 to 1. Only the New T-Mobile will have the capacity to deliver real, nationwide 5G. We're confident that, once regulators see the compelling benefits, they'll agree this is the right move at the right time for consumers and the country."

Before the deal could be completed, however, 14 state attorneys general sued to block the merger from happening. Their main argument is that reducing the number of U.S. nationwide telecommunications companies from three to four would result in less competitive pricing, driving up phone prices for everyone in the country.

Lawyers for the two sides of the case delivered their closing arguments in mid-January, and the final decision now rests on the shoulders of U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero, who did not offer a definitive date to expect his ruling.

The longer the final ruling on the case is delayed, the more Sprint's stock price declines, but regardless of whether the merger is allowed to go through, investors will likely see huge shakeups in the industry's landscape in the near future. 5G is coming, and the race to offer it nationwide has the potential to make or break the four (or three) telecom giants.

Where is America's Huawei?

Nearly a decade in the making, 5G tech - the next generation of mobile broadband - is set to revolutionize wireless communications. As shown in the chart below, shares of T-Mobile, Verizon (NYSE:V) and AT&T (NYSE:T), the three largest mobile wireless providers in the U.S., have seen their stock prices increase since 2018, when they began announcing that they were building out their 5G networks in major cities.

4812f4cf193f280f70b76ec9b08eb257.png

Despite being the second player to the 5G game after Verizon, Sprint's shares have declined approximately 24% since 2018, while net income plunged back into the negatives in fiscal 2019 after a profitable fiscal 2018.

1a76062199ec80fb0bd2073575740234.png

Sprint is not lagging behind its larger competitors in terms of 5G quality and coverage, but new tech tends to have a "flocking effect" on customers. When those looking for the best have no means to go about figuring out what the best is, they tend to go with the more prominent option, the one that has the greatest market exposure. If you ask which company has the "best" 5G, no one can give you a straight answer because there is none. One may be faster today, only to have another beat it the next month. One may have a larger network that came at the expense of speed or the completeness of said coverage. Misinformation abounds.

This flocking effect is what makes the fact that the U.S. has four main telecom giants competing to develop 5G unique. China's Huawei is the largest wireless networking company in the world and dominates the Chinese market, followed by Finland's Nokia (NOK) and Sweden's Ericsson (ERIC).

"As an American, it's disappointing, especially when I look at my career. The U.S. was the envy of the entire world in communications networks... now when I look at the competitive landscape with respect to telecommunications infrastructure technology, the U.S. is no longer a leader," Dan Hesse, former president and CEO of AT&T (1990s) and Sprint (2007-2014), said.

Thus, there are certain pressures on both the consumer and national sides that would make the T-Mobile-Sprint merger appealing, despite antitrust concerns. One less competitor would mean more attractive offerings for customers and increasing international competitive strength for the U.S. wireless companies.

The fourth competitor

During the trial to determine the fate of the merger, Sprint and T-Mobile's main counterargument for those concerned over the elimination of the fourth competitor was that Sprint would sell some of its assets to Dish Network (NASDAQ:DISH) so that Dish could develop its own 5G network.

The general agreement in the courtroom was that going down a competitor was bad news for consumers, so T-Mobile proposed that Dish could acquire Sprint's Boost Mobile and piggy-back on T-Mobile's network for seven years while it built out its own wireless 5G.

Regardless of whether or not Sprint and T-Mobile merge, there will still most likely be a fourth competitor. However, the market shakeup from 5G may not allow Sprint to continue as is.

Sprint has been losing customers in recent years, and this negative trend has been exacerbated by the news coverage surrounding the court case. Customers leaving the company are generally saying that Sprint is no longer a competitor, since it offers less service and coverage for the same price. As of June 2019, Sprint had 54.3 million mobile customers compared to Verizon's 151.5 million, AT&T's 153 million and T-Mobile's 84.2 million.

Analysts and investors alike are skeptical about Sprint's chances of surviving by itself if the merger doesn't go through. "Given we are in the late stages of the merger process, we have not even provided full-year guidance for fiscal 2019," a Sprint spokesperson told SDxCentral in October. "We have given some color on near-term trends, including our expectation that network cash capex should continue at current spending levels." This statement indicates that the company is concentrating its eggs in the merger basket.

If allowed, the merger will leave Dish to try to fill Sprint's shoes, and if blocked, the company has several options.

According to New Street analysts led by Jonathan Chaplin, "If the deal is blocked, we believe the business needs at least $5-$10 billion in new capital to engineer a turnaround. Even with the requisite capital, a turnaround would take years and may not succeed. SoftBank is adamant that they won't invest another penny in Sprint. If this deal fails, and if we take SoftBank at their word, Sprint is in a bleak spot."

To fund its struggling business, Sprint could sell some of its operations, of which spectrum would be ideal asset with many interested buyers. However, that would be like burning its lifeboat. Filing for Chapter 11 protection would be like signing its own death warrant, since it would be bowing out right before an expected period of intensive industry growth.

Another merger

In the end, even if the merger with T-Mobile is blocked, Sprint's best option may still be a merger - just with a different company.

Out of all the companies that could try competing with the other three U.S. wireless communications giants, Sprint is the only one that a reasonable chance, even if it has been losing business lately. A merger with a company that has high synergy potential could give it the scale and financial stability to remain competitive.

For example, Sprint might consider merging with Dish, as T-Mobile tried to do back in 2015. T-Mobile wanted to gain access to valuable spectrum that Dish had long held on to, but Dish shot down the deal. So far, Dish has stayed out of the wireless market, but the trial over the Sprint-T-Mobile merger put it in the spotlight as a willing competitor.

"We want to be in the business," Dish's CEO Charlie Ergen said during the trial. "Sprint doesn't want to be in the business. We do."

Arsenal sign Cedric Soares from Southampton - Goal.com

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:36 PM PST

Arsenal have completed the signing of Cedric Soares from Southampton.

The right-back has arrived on loan until the end of the season, when his current deal with the Saints will expire. Arsenal have an option included which could then see them hand the Portugal international a four-year contract in the summer.

Cedric becomes the Gunners' second new addition of the transfer window, following on from the arrival of Spanish centre-back Pablo Mari, who joined on loan from Flamengo.

Arsenal have paid Southampton a loan fee of just under £1 million for the 28-year-old and will cover his wages for the rest of the campaign, which are believed to be around £65,000 per week.

Speaking about his move to Emirates Stadium, Cedric said: "It's a dream come true being here, and being able to play for Arsenal is unreal.

"Arsenal is a top team. They are a very, very good club, with fantastic fans as well. They are known to be so well supported and for me, it's a pleasure to be here.

"Like I said, it's a dream come true because I always thought about coming here and imagined it, and seeing it happen is really amazing."

The addition of a new right-back will be a boost for Mikel Arteta, who doesn't have a like-for-like replacement for Hector Bellerin in his squad.

He has used Ainsley Maitland-Niles, a natural central midfielder, in that role at times while Calum Chambers would have been an option, but he has been ruled out for nine months having ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Cedric will also bring some versatility to Arteta's squad, as he can also operate on the left side of a back four.

"Cedric is a defender with good experience of the Premier League, and of course at international level," commented Arsenal's technical director Edu.

"He is another strong addition to our defensive unit who will provide our squad with quality. I know he is a player who plays with absolute full commitment and energy.

"We are all looking forward to going into the last stages of the season with Cedric as part of the club."

Arsenal fans may have to wait a little bit longer to see their new signing in action, however, as he is currently suffering from a knee problem which is expected to keep him sidelined for another three weeks.

Arteta's side face Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday before heading to Dubai for a mid-season break. They will return to action on Sunday, February 16 when Newcastle United visit Emirates Stadium.
