COVID-19 cases confirmed in east China prison - SHINE

Posted: 21 Feb 2020 12:37 AM PST

A total of 207 infection cases of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, have been confirmed in an eastern China prison, according to a press conference held by the Shandong provincial government on Friday.

The local authorities have completed nucleic acid tests of all relevant personnel in the Rencheng Prison in the city of Jining, reporting 207 confirmed cases. Currently, effective isolation and treatment measures have been taken for all confirmed patients.

On February 12, a prison officer was isolated in a hospital exhibiting symptoms such as coughing. He was diagnosed with novel coronavirus pneumonia after nucleic acid testing the next day.

The provincial government immediately put the prison under closed management and started health screenings and isolation work.

The Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Ministry of Justice attach great importance to the epidemic infection in the Rencheng Prison, giving specific instructions and sending personnel to guide the epidemic control work.

All people in close contact with the infected patients have been put under quarantine. The provincial government has organized to send experts from the whole province to assist medics in Jining to formulate personalized medical treatment plans for each patient.

Temporary hospitals are under construction, and medical equipment such as breathing machines and CT scanners and materials such as masks and protective clothing have been diverted from the whole province to Jining to address the need for treatment.

The provincial government has sent inspection teams to all prisons, detention centers and drug rehabilitation centers in the province to oversee epidemic prevention and control.

Eight officials have been removed from posts for the ineffective prevention and control of the epidemic situation in the prison, including Xie Weijun, secretary of the Party committee of the provincial department of justice, who is also the Party secretary of the Provincial Prison Administration, and Liu Baoshan, director of the Rencheng Prison.

GoFundMe to send bullied Australian boy in viral video to Disneyland raises $121K - New York Post

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 11:57 PM PST

More than $121,000 in charity money has been raised to send a bullied Australian boy filmed in a viral video sobbing after school to Disneyland.

Thousands of donors have chipped in to a GoFundme supporting the vacation for Quaden Bayles, 9, who was born with Achondroplasia dwarfism.

The outpouring of support was inspired by a heartwrenching video his mother posted of Quaden crying in the family car after another child at his school mocked him for his height.

"I wish I could stab myself in my heart," Quaden says through tears in the clip. "I want someone to kill me."

The page organizer, Brad Williams, wrote that he launched the fundraiser to show Quaden "there is good in the world" and claimed to be in touch directly with his mother, Yarraka Bayles.

"I'm setting up this GoFundMe to let Quaden know that bullying will not be tolerated, and that he is a wonderful human being who deserves joy," Williams wrote. "I want to fly Quaden and his mother to America, get them a nice hotel, and bring them to Disneyland."

Yarraka Bayles originally shared the video to illustrate the effects of bullying and to get parenting advice from others.

"I want people to know, this is the effect bullying has," she says in the video. "This is what bullying does. All it takes is one more instant, and you wonder why kids are killing themselves."

The clip has been viewed more than 15 million times since Bayles uploaded it to Facebook Tuesday, rallying encouragement from across the globe.

"Sending love to you from Minnesota!" wrote one contributor. "You are an amazing boy with so much to share with the world!"

Another added, "We love you Quaden and Family! Have a great trip from Somerset, MA, USA!"

Back home, athletes from the Indigenous Australian professional rugby league invited Quaden to lead the Indigenous All Stars team out onto the field for an upcoming match.

"Just want to wish you all the best brother," said Latrell Mitchell, one of the team's players, in a video to Quaden. "We know you're going through a hard time right now but the boys are here, we've got your back. We're here to support you, bud."

Viral ‘Skull Breaker Challenge’ Seriously Injures Unknowing 13-Year-Old Participant - NBC10 Boston

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 10:57 PM PST

A viral social media challenge is raising major safety concerns.

Paramedics raced to a middle school in Lawrence, Massachusetts, late last month after 13-year-old Kathleen DeJesus became an unknowing participant in the "skull breaker challenge," which is all the rage on platforms like TikTok.

"I was thinking, like, I feel like I was going to die," DeJesus said. "I was paralyzed. I fell, I had a concussion, and I was numb, I couldn't feel my legs, my foot, my hands, nothing."

The challenge involves having three people line up in a row to jump — except the two people on the outside don't jump, instead trying to kick the legs out from under the middle person.

"It is really the virality of the platform, said public relations CEO and professor David Gerzof Richard.

Richard says this challenge and ones that have come before, such as the "outlet challenge," aren't the last we'll see of this.

"The reason this is happening is because there's not adult supervision to say, 'Hey, wait a second, stop,'" Richard said. "You wouldn't see this on Facebook or Instagram at this point."

DeJesus hopes these challenges start trending in a safer direction.

"I just feel like it needs to stop, because it's getting out of hand," she said.

The seventh-grader says she still has concussion symptoms and will be in Boston Friday to see yet another doctor.

T-Mobile and Sprint finalize new merger terms, could close the deal as soon as April 1 - 9to5Mac

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 10:53 PM PST

Following the last major regulatory hurdle being cleared earlier this month, Sprint and T-Mobile have announced today that they've finalized the new terms for their merger. The two carrier say the deal could close as early as April 1, creating the "New T-Mobile."

As detailed by CNET, the new terms of the deal give Deutsche Telekom a larger stake in New T-Mobile. This change was made to improve the exchange ratio in the all-stock deal.

As part of the new terms of the deal, T-Mobile's parent company Deutsche Telekom will get a larger stake in the new company. The German telecom giant will own 43% of the new company. Meanwhile, Softbank, which is majority owner of Sprint, will own 24% of the new company with the remaining 33% being held by public shareholders.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the new terms of the deal prior to the official announcement from T-Mobile and Sprint.

In a statement this afternoon, current CEO of T-Mobile John Legere said the today's announcement is "another significant step forward toward closing this transaction." According to Legere, the goal remains to develop a nationwide 5G network:

"Throughout this journey, T-Mobile and Sprint have been singularly focused on one thing: building a supercharged Un-carrier that will offer U.S. consumers a broad and deep nationwide 5G network, more choice and greater competition. We are now on the threshold of achieving our goal," Legere said.

Current T-Mobile COO Mike Sievert is slated to become CEO of New T-Mobile once the deal closes. Legere will step down from his role of CEO, though he's expected to remain on the board of directors.

Earlier this month, the T-Mobile and Sprint merger received approval from the judge presiding over a lawsuit from attorneys general from 13 states and the District of Columbia. The lawsuit aimed to block the deal over concerns about higher prices and reduced competition.

China says two prisons reported nearly 250 cases of the new coronavirus - CNBC

Two prisons in China have reported nearly 250 cases of COVID-19 cases, with both inmates and prison guards getting infected.

On Friday, Xinhua news agency reported that 207 cases of the new coronavirus were reported in Rencheng prison as of Feb. 20. The state-owned agency was citing information from the Shandong provincial government.

Seven of those infected are prison officers while the rest are inmates, Xinhua said, adding that prison officers started reporting symptoms in early February.

Xie Weijin, the provincial judicial department chief was removed from his post, newspaper People's Daily said in a tweet. Xinhua said his departure was a result of inadequate epidemic prevention and control.

All are being treated and isolated, the state news agency added.

A jail in the Zhejiang province has also reported a total of 34 infections, including 27 new cases this week. All of them are inmates, according to Chinese media. Two officials were removed from their post in this case, reported the Global Times, another government-owned news outlet.

China's National Health Commission said there were 889 new confirmed cases as of Feb. 20, bringing the total confirmed cases to 75,465. The death toll in mainland China so far is 2,236.

"Jails are becoming the new battleground, Nomura economists said in a morning note on Friday, after pointing out that there's been a big sudden rebound of new cases outside Hubei.

Coronavirus Live Updates: A Surge of New Cases in South Korea - The New York Times

South Korea said on Friday that the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection rose to 156, a near tripling over three days.

Among the 52 new cases reported on Friday, 41 are in Daegu, a city of about two and half million people in the southeastern part of the country, and the surrounding region, South Korean disease control officials said in a statement. Among those, 39 of the new cases were connected to a church called Shincheonji.

Officials said a 61-year-old woman who had attended services at the church over the past two Sundays had been identified as a potential source of the spread of the virus.

The new figures give South Korea the world's second largest number of confirmed cases if those from the Diamond Princess cruise ship are not included in Japan's total. The vast majority of cases are in mainland China, which has reported more than 75,000 cases. Japan has 94 cases, which does not include the more than 600 people who had been on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

South Korea reported on Thursday what officials said could be its first death from the coronavirus. A 63-year-old patient with symptoms of pneumonia died on Wednesday at the Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo.

Chinese officials announced on Friday that 889 new cases of the coronavirus had been reported in the previous 24 hours, raising the overall total above 75,000.

The Coronavirus Outbreak

  • What do you need to know? Start here.

    Updated Feb. 10, 2020

    • What is a Coronavirus?
It is a novel virus named for the crown-like spikes that protrude from its surface. The coronavirus can infect both animals and people, and can cause a range of respiratory illnesses from the common cold to more dangerous conditions like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS.
    • How contagious is the virus?
According to preliminary research, it seems moderately infectious, similar to SARS, and is possibly transmitted through the air. Scientists have estimated that each infected person could spread it to somewhere between 1.5 and 3.5 people without effective containment measures.
    • How worried should I be?
While the virus is a serious public health concern, the risk to most people outside China remains very low, and seasonal flu is a more immediate threat.
    • Who is working to contain the virus?
World Health Organization officials have praised China's aggressive response to the virus by closing transportation, schools and markets. This week, a team of experts from the W.H.O. arrived in Beijing to offer assistance.
    • What if I'm traveling?
The United States and Australia are temporarily denying entry to noncitizens who recently traveled to China and several airlines have canceled flights.
    • How do I keep myself and others safe?
Washing your hands frequently is the most important thing you can do, along with staying at home when you're sick.

The death toll went up by 118, to 2,236.

All but three of the new deaths were in China's central Hubei Province, the focus of the outbreak. Hubei was also the source of nearly three quarters of the new confirmed cases of infection.

The new count came one day after Chinese health authorities said they were using new criteria to count cases of the coronavirus. The move appeared to undo a change they made last week.

That earlier change allowed health officials in Hubei to count cases diagnosed in clinical settings, including with the use of CT scans showing lung infections, not just those confirmed using specialized kits to test for the virus.

On Thursday, officials said Hubei would now resume using the same criteria as the rest of the country. Cases will be considered confirmed only if the virus is found.

The World Health Organization said on Thursday that two new drug therapy trials to help fight the coronavirus are set to begin in China and that early results may be available within three weeks.

One trial involves an experimental antiviral drug made by Gilead. It has not yet been licensed for use.

The drug was tested against the Ebola virus in Congo, where it was not very effective. But when it was given to the first American known to be infected with the coronavirus, an unidentified man in Washington State, he recovered.

The second trial involves a combination of two anti-H.I.V. drugs that is sold as Kaletra in the United States and available in generic versions.

If either therapy helps prevent severe pneumonia, sepsis or organ failure in coronavirus patients, death rates may fall. Two other drugs — favipiravir and chloroquine — have also been discussed as potential treatments.

Eunice Chan, a physician in Hong Kong, removes her face mask only to shower, eat and drink. When her three daughters, ages 7, 9 and 12, gather around the dining table to eat, she takes her meal in another room.

"There's no more hugging, no more kissing," she said. "This is especially difficult for my youngest daughter."

Her self-imposed isolation is understandable. In Hong Kong, there have been two deaths and 68 confirmed cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. And the city shares a porous border with the mainland, where more than 100 people on average have died of the disease every day since Feb. 1.

The risks, and anxieties, in the Chan household are particularly high. Both Dr. Chan, 44, and her husband, Dr. Pierre Chan, 43, have taken extraordinary measures to treat their patients and protect their family.

Dr. Pierre Chan, a gastroenterologist at a public hospital and a member of Hong Kong's legislature, this month examined five patients infected with the coronavirus.

Though he was wearing full protective gear and his hospital did not require him to go into quarantine, he slept on the floor of his office for 14 days to avoid the possibility of infecting his daughters and his in-laws.

"I don't dare go home," he said. "I don't even dare to go into hotels. You never know: I could be asymptomatic. Maybe a tiny bit of the virus got onto my clothes."

Reporting was contributed by Donald G. McNeil Jr., Choe Sang-Hun, Roni Caryn Rabin, Carlos Tejada and Tiffany May.

Coronavirus live updates: China reports 118 more deaths, South Korea cases spike to cross 150 - CNBC

This is a live blog. Please check back for updates.

All times below are in Beijing time.

12:05 pm: China says foreign companies speeding up return to work

Overall, for foreign-invested enterprises in Shanghai, Shandong, Hunan and other areas, the rate of resumption of work has topped 80%, a representative for China's Ministry of Commerce said Friday at a press conference, according to a CNBC translation of his Mandarin remarks.

For Guangdong, Jiangsu and other major foreign trade provinces, the resumption of work has been rapidly increasing, the ministry said, noting that key businesses in foreign trade in provinces such as Zhejiang and Shandong have a resumption of work rate of around 70%.

Guangdong was the top source of China's exports by far in 2019, followed in order by Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Shandong, according to official data accessed through Wind Information.

By the end of the month, many places will have essentially have resumed work and production, the ministry said, without stating if it was referring just to foreign-invested enterprises. — Cheng

11:15 am: China's commerce ministry expects growth rate of Jan/Feb trade data to fall sharply

China's January/February growth rate of imports and exports are expected to fall sharply.

"It's expected that the growth rate of imports and exports in January and February will fall sharply," due to blockages in logistics, delays in the resumption of work and other factors such as the Lunar New Year, Li Xinggan, director of the department of foreign trade at the Ministry of Commerce, said Friday at a press conference, according to a CNBC translation of his Chinese remarks.

Analysts have said the economic fallout from the outbreak on China's economy would be notable for at least one quarter, or more, if the spread of the disease is not meaningfully contained by March. Li added that preparation for the Canton Fair, a key event in Guangdong province for China's international trade, is still progressing as scheduled. The fair is set to begin in mid-April.

China often groups January and February data together to account for Lunar New Year volatility. The country's customs office abruptly announced earlier this month shortly before the scheduled release of trade data for January that it would be combined with February's data. — Cheng

10:07 am: China virus response group calls for greater protection of medical staff

A national-level meeting of China's leading virus response group on Thursday called for greater protection of medical staff.

A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that "unfortunate infections" in health care workers mostly occurred before Feb. 1 and in Hubei province, the epicenter of the coronavirus. "All-out efforts must be made to treat the infected medical workers and effective steps taken to forestall further cases in their ranks," the English-language release said. — Cheng

9:20 am: China reports 118 additional deaths

China said another 118 people have died, with most of them in Hubei province. That brings the total number of deaths in the mainland to 2,236 people, the National Health Commission said.

There were 889 new confirmed cases as of Feb. 20, bringing the total confirmed cases to 75,465, the commission said. More than 2,000 people were also cured and discharged on the same day. — Roy Choudhury

9:13 am: China consumers may be ready to spend when outbreak subsides

One strategist told CNBC that bored Chinese consumers will be ready to splash some cash once they can get out of their homes after the outbreak subsides.

"I'm quite optimistic that with most of the consumer part of the economy, people who've been cooped up in their apartments for the last several weeks are going to be ready to spend when they get out," said
Andy Rothman, investment strategist at Matthews Asia.

Many Chinese cities have turned into ghost towns as quarantines kick in and people stay away from crowds to reduce the risk of infection. "If there's demand for goods — which there certainly seems to be — factories will be running full-time to try and up for lost time," he said. – Huileng Tan

9:11 am: South Korea reports 52 new cases, total exceeds 150

The Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention said another 52 people were infected, bringing the total cases in the country to 156. Most of the new cases came from the city of Daegu, and 33 of them were linked to a church. Seoul also reported three additional cases. South Korea now has one of the highest number of cases outside mainland China. (see update 7:05 am) — Roy Choudhury

8:22 am: 2 Australian passengers from quarantined cruise ship test positive

Two out of 164 Australians who were flown back from the Diamond Princess cruise ship — that had been quarantined in Japan since early February — have tested positive, said Australia's chief medical officer, Professor Brendan Murphy.

The passengers were flown from Japan to a quarantine facility in Australia. None of them displayed any symptoms and did not test positive for the virus in Japan. After they were screened again in Australia, six of them began to display minor respiratory symptoms and fever, and two were subsequently confirmed. — Roy Choudhury

7:23 am: Hubei reports 115 new deaths, most of them in Wuhan

China's Hubei province said there were 115 additional deaths as of Feb. 20, which brought the total number of fatalities in the region to 2,144.

The Hubei Provincial Health Committee reported there were 411 new cases on Feb. 20, bringing the cumulative number of infections to 62,422. For the second day in a row, the number of confirmed new cases dropped significantly lower than 1,000 cases.

It is unclear if the steep decline is linked to a change in diagnosis protocol. What was previously termed "clinically diagnosed," or those confirmed through CT scans and symptoms, will now fall under the "suspected" category. They will no longer be counted as "confirmed" cases like they were in the previous diagnosis protocol.

The virus, first detected in Hubei capital Wuhan, has killed more than 2,000 people so far — about 10 people outside the mainland have died. — Roy Choudhury

Correction: This post has been updated to reflect that the number of new cases fell significantly below 1,000 in the last two days. It was originally misstated due to an editing error.

7:20 am: Amazon tells sellers it will take down listings for products that claim to kill coronavirus

Amazon is removing listings from its online marketplace that claim to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The company notified third-party merchants this week that it was taking down listings claiming to be a treatment, cure or remedy for the coronavirus, according to an email obtained by CNBC.

Last week, CNBC reported that Amazon was one of several tech giants that met with the World Health Organization at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif. offices to discuss how to stop misinformation about the coronavirus on their platforms. 4:21 pm: Facebook pulls out of Game Developers Conference

Facebook is pulling out of next month's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco due to on-going concerns with the coronavirus outbreak. "GDC is always a highlight of our gaming event lineup, however the health of our employees and the wider games community comes before anything else," the company said in a blog post. "Due to the evolving health concerns surrounding COVID-19, Facebook's AR/VR and Gaming teams will not be attending GDC this year."

Facebook typically uses the Game Developers Conference each year to make announcements for its Oculus virtual reality division and its other endeavors in gaming. A company spokesman said Facebook will still make its planned announcements, but it will do so in a digital format. — Rodriguez

3:52 pm: S&P Global says Chinese banks could see bad loans double

Chinese banks may face increasing pressure from a rise in bad loans, according to a new report from S&P Global Ratings. The coronavirus epidemic could nearly double the number of questionable loans on the books of Chinese banks. The Chinese government has much of the country under lockdown to try to contain the outbreak, pressuring the finances of companies and consumers alike. Most of that economic impact will likely be felt in the first quarter of this year, the report said, with a recovery firmly in place by the third quarter.

Based on that slowdown, S&P Global estimates that the share of questionable loans could rise from 6.5% to 7.5% of all loans before the outbreak to a peak of about 10.5% to 11.5% in the aftermath of the epidemic. The rise in bad loans comes as Chinese bank regulators have been working to tighten accounting standards. S&P Global analysts said the coronavirus crisis will likely slow those reforms, as authorities focus instead on financial and social stability. — Schoen

T-Mobile, Sprint amend merger terms, SoftBank takes a hit - Reuters

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 07:53 PM PST

(Reuters) - T-Mobile US (TMUS.O) and Sprint Corp (S.N) said on Thursday that they had agreed on new merger terms that would reduce the stake of major Sprint shareholder SoftBank, while leaving the offer to other shareholders unchanged.

FILE PHOTO: Smartphones with the logos of T-Mobile and Sprint are seen in this illustration taken September 19, 2017. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration

Under the revised deal, SoftBank (9434.T) will hold about 24% of the combined entity, down from 27% under the earlier terms. T-Mobile's parent Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE) will hold about 43% of the combined entity, up from the 42% that the German group would have held.

Shares of Sprint were up 5% to $9.95, while T-Mobile fell 1.5% to $98 in trading after the bell.

SoftBank has agreed to surrender about 48.8 million T-Mobile shares acquired in the merger to the new company after the deal closes, changing the exchange ratio to 11 Sprint shares for each T-Mobile share, higher than the originally agreed 9.75 shares.

Sprint shareholders other than SoftBank will continue to receive the original exchange ratio.

SoftBank can get the shares back if the combined company hits stock price milestones, the companies said without disclosing the details.

Sources said SoftBank agreed to the change to avoid delaying the close of the merger. If the ratio for the Sprint common shareholders was changed, a new fairness opinion and a shareholder vote may have been required, which could have delayed the close by four months.

The companies now hope to close on April 1.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news.

Last week, a federal judge approved the merger deal, rejecting a claim by a group of states that said the proposed transaction would violate antitrust laws and raise prices.

New York on Sunday dropped its fight against the merger of the U.S. wireless carriers, saying the state would not appeal the judge's approval of the deal.

Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Hoettges said on Wednesday the new T-Mobile would have a market value of around $120 billion. That compares with $274 billion for AT&T (T.N) and $242 billion for Verizon <VZ.N

Samsung botches 'Find My Mobile' test, sends users '1' notification worldwide - AppleInsider

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 07:37 PM PST

A large number of Samsung smartphone owners around the world discovered a mysterious message on their devices overnight, a notification that the company admits was part of an internal test gone wrong.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, a new model recently launched by the company featuring a flexible display.

On Thursday morning, a contingent of Samsung Galaxy smartphone users discovered a notification was sent to their devices by Samsung. The push notification, as part of the company's Find My Mobile system, displayed the short message of the number "1" on smartphone screens.

It is unclear how many users were affected by the mysterious message, but indications show it was sent to as many users as possible via the Samsung device relocation service. What is known is that it is not limited to just a single country, with users around the world advising on social media of the message's appearance on their devices.

Along with providing a single character as the entire message, tapping the notification did nothing, when usually the action would take users to the relevant app. In some cases, users claimed the Find My Mobile app used a considerable amount of battery, though again with no indication for why it occurred.

Samsung told Yonhap News the message was sent as part of an "internal test," the message has "no effect on the customer's smartphone," and that it is "sorry for the inconvenience."

A similar advisement was made on Samsung's support forums via a "care ambassador" for the company ahead of the statement's release, with the poster believing it was a test to prove that "services are working."

sk Hynix sends 800 workers home to self-quarantine against coronavirus - Blocks and Files

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 07:37 PM PST

sk Hynix, the Korean flash and DRAM maker, has sent home 800 workers from its Incheon campus in South Korea as a self-quarantine precaution against the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The company said a new recruit has showed symptoms of pneumonia and was transported to a nearby hospital for tests. The recruit had been in close contact with a coronavirus patient in Daegu, 300 kilometres southeast of Seoul, where South Korea's health authorities  have reported more than 10 COVID-19 cases.

sk Hynix has shut down its in-house clinic, visited by the new recruit, and also closed its education centre, sending 280 new recruits home.

The company's Incheon campus is 70 kilometres south of Seoul and employs some 15,000 workers. sk Hynix said the self-quarantine measure has not affected operations of the chip fabs on the site.

Why You Got a Weird '1' Notification on Your Samsung Android - Lifehacker

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 06:37 PM PST

Did you get a weird notification on your Samsung phone last night? You're not alone. Reports of a mysterious notification have been hitting the internet over the past day after some Samsung phones received a "Find my Phone" push notification that simply said "1," with no explanation.

That's only part of the mystery, though, as some users also noticed a spike in Find My Phone's battery usage along with the random alert. Users speculated about the cause and looked for any potential fixes for the battery issue, but no clear solutions have emerged.

The good news is the notification is nothing to worry about. Samsung says the alert was simply an accident. Basically, someone pressed a button they didn't mean to and sent out the mass notification during an internal test—it wasn't anyone trying to locate your device without your approval, though why it said "1" is unclear (and probably doesn't matter, unless you're really into numerology).

The battery issue, however, is another story. There's obviously a correlation, but Samsung's statement didn't address the issue. The Find My Phone feature doesn't normally use up battery like that under normal conditions, so hopefully, it was just a one-time fluke and not a bug. There's no need to start frantically changing your passwords, disabling notifications, or anything like that.

That said, if you wake up in the middle of the night and see a "2" on your smartphone, you might want to move your phone away from your head. You never know.

Soccer-Eriksen scores first Inter goal, Ajax lose at Getafe - Nasdaq

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 06:27 PM PST

By Brian Homewood

ZURICH, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen scored his first goal for the club since last month's move from Tottenham Hotspur to set up a 2-0 win at Ludogorets Razgrad in the Europa League on Thursday.

Manchester United were held 1-1 at Club Brugge and Getafe pulled off a surprise 2-0 home win over last year's Champions League semi-finalists Ajax in other round-of-32, first-leg ties.

Inter were frustrated by more than an hour by their Bulgarian opponents until Eriksen fired a low shot into the net from just outside the penalty area in the 71st minute.

Romelu Lukaku sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty, the Belgian striker's 22nd goal of the season, after Anicet Andrianantenaina was judged to have handled following a VAR review.

United were quickly in trouble in Belgium when Emmanuel Dennis lobbed the ball over Sergio Romero to give Brugge a 15th- minute lead, but Anthony Martial levelled in the 36th minute when he raced through to place a shot past Simon Mignolet.

United, with new midfield signing Bruno Fernandes on the bench, struggled to create many chances, although conditions were difficult with heavy rain and a strong wind.

Brazilian pair Deyverson and Kenedy scored in each half for Getafe against Ajax. Deyverson finished off a well-worked free kick to celebrate his European debut for the La Liga club with a goal after 38 minutes and Kenedy broke clear to add a second in the last minute.

In other matches, Daichi Kamada scored a hat-trick to help Eintracht Frankfurt to a 4-1 win over coach Adi Huetter's former club RB Salzburg.

Viktor Kovalenko scored the winner as Shakhtar Donetsk beat Benfica 2-1 and Sporting defeated Istanbul Basaksehir 3-1.

Youssef En-Nesyri equalised as Sevilla rescued a 1-1 draw at Cluj after Ciprian Deac had given the Romanians the lead with a penalty.

T-Mobile and Sprint Amend Merger Terms. The Deal Could Close in April. - Barron's

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 06:23 PM PST

Photograph by John MacDougall/AFP via Getty Images

T-Mobile US and Sprint have adjusted the terms of their long-sought merger, which recently cleared a major legal challenge. T-Mobile shareholders will own a slightly larger percentage of the new company than under the previous agreement. Such an adjustment had been widely expected by investors, with many expecting an even greater consideration to T-Mobile investors than the new deal announced on Thursday evening.

T-Mobile stock (ticker: TMUS) fell close to 2% in after-hours trading, while Sprint stock (S) jumped almost 5%.

Under the revised terms, shareholders will receive one T-Mobile share for each 11 Sprint shares they hold. That compares with the original 9.75 exchange ratio agreed in April 2018, which was more favorable to Sprint shareholders.

Newsletter Sign-up

T-Mobile's controlling shareholder, Deutsche Telekom (DTE.Germany), will own about 43% of the combined company, while Sprint's majority owner SoftBank Group (9984.Japan) will hold 24%. Public shareholders will own the remaining third of the new T-Mobile.

In addition, SoftBank will surrender almost 49 million T-Mobile shares at the time of the merger, which it can get back if the stock reaches certain price levels. That agreement essentially gives public shareholders a better price than SoftBank is getting in the deal.

"Today's announcement is another significant step forward toward finally closing this transaction!" said T-Mobile CEO John Legere in a statement Thursday. "Throughout this journey, T-Mobile and Sprint have been singularly focused on one thing: building a supercharged Un-carrier that will offer U.S. consumers a broad and deep nationwide 5G network, more choice and greater competition. We are now on the threshold of achieving our goal."

The companies also said Thursday that the combination could close as soon as April 1.

T-Mobile was able to eke out a better price in the deal because its business fundamentals have performed much better than Sprint's during the merger's lengthy regulatory review and legal challenge. The companies' stock prices have reflected the divergence.

Barron's recently called T-Mobile shares a winner whether its merger was approved or not.

Capitals' Alex Ovechkin ends drought with 699th career goal - ESPN

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 05:57 PM PST

Alex Ovechkin scored in the first period of the Washington Capitals' home game against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night, giving him 699 career goals.

The goal snapped a five-game streak without a point (tied for the longest of his career) for the Capitals star. He last scored Feb. 4, collecting a hat trick against the Los Angeles Kings.

Thursday night's game is ongoing.

Only seven players have scored 700: Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Jaromir Jagr, Brett Hull, Marcel Dionne, Phil Esposito and Mike Gartner.

Ovechkin's goal is his 22nd against Carey Price, tied for the third most in his career against a single goalie. The only goaltenders he has scored more goals against in his career are Marc-Andre Fleury and Henrik Lundqvist (24 each).

Pole vaulter nearly castrates himself in viral mishap - New York Post

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 05:57 PM PST

A freak pole vaulting accident turns out to be every man's worst nightmare.

Zach McWhorter, a 21-year-old student athlete from Brigham Young University, was nearly maimed during a routine practice run that was captured on video. He clears the bar with ease, but the clip takes a frightening turn when the pole, instead of falling safely to the side, wedges itself at the least opportune angle imaginable: directly beneath him, impaling his groin area.

McWhorter shared the horrifying video on popular social media platform, TikTok.

"That one time the pole went through my n–s…18 stitches later… RIP to my future kids," the video's caption reads. The post has gone viral with more than 18.7 million views and 3.6 million likes.

He also shared a graphic image of his underwear with a gaping hole through which the pole had torn.

"I could see right into my scrotum," he told Buzzfeed after the accident.

Lucky for McWhorter, his father is also his coach and a trained urologist.

"Immediately after the incident, we got in his car and drove to the hospital and he sewed me up. It required 18 stitches!" McWhorter said.

Shocking, it doesn't sound like there will be lasting effects.

"Fortunately, as far as I know, there is nothing wrong with my testicles — just a scar. One day, we'll find out if they function or not," McWhorter said.

The young athlete says he has learned an important lesson from the ordeal.

"Don't free-ball (wear shorts without spandex inserts)" and "always put a cap on the end of the pole."

Sprint, T-Mobile Revise Merger Terms - The Wall Street Journal

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 05:53 PM PST

T-Mobile's parent, Deutsche Telekom, will get a better exchange ratio in the all-stock deal.

Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. have agreed on new terms for their merger, as the wireless carriers race to close the deal after overcoming a federal court challenge.

The parties will improve the exchange ratio in the all-stock deal for T-Mobile's parent, Deutsche Telekom AG , the companies said in a written statement confirming an earlier Wall Street Journal report.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero last week allowed the deal to proceed by rejecting arguments from a group of state attorneys general seeking to block the merger as anticompetitive.

T-Mobile said after the court ruling that it was working to close the transaction as soon as April 1.

Originally, 9.75 Sprint shares were to be exchanged for each T-Mobile share. Under the revised deal, SoftBank Group Corp., which owns more than 80% of Sprint's common stock, will exchange the equivalent of 11 of its shares for each T-Mobile share. Sprint's other shareholders will continue to get the original exchange ratio.

Deutsche Telekom is to own about 43% of the combined company now, up from just below 42% when the deal was first announced nearly two years ago, the companies said. SoftBank's percentage will drop to approximately 24% from 27%. The remaining 33% is to be held by the public, up from 31%.

To effect the changes, SoftBank has agreed to surrender 48.8 million T-Mobile shares to the new company, to be called T-Mobile. Those shares could be reissued to SoftBank if T-Mobile's stock price reaches certain milestones beginning two years after the deal closes.

The original merger agreement allowed either party to walk away after Nov. 1, 2019, without paying a penalty. Both companies stuck with the deal over the following months, however, as they defended it in federal court. They argued the merger would create a more efficient network that would offset any harm to competition.

Given the downward slide of Sprint's shares amid continued customer defections since the tie-up was announced—as T-Mobile's growing customer base pushed up its stock—Deutsche Telekom was expected to push for an altered exchange ratio and a larger share of the new T-Mobile.

When the deal was announced, Sprint shares were trading around $6.50. Before the court ruling Feb. 11, Sprint's share price had sunk to $4.80. It has since jumped above $9. Sprint shares closed nearly unchanged Thursday at $9.48, and rose 5% in after-hours trading. T-Mobile shares closed down about 1% at $99.50, and fell a further 1% in after-hours trading.

The deal was valued above $26 billion when the carriers originally struck it in April 2018.

Both the U.S. Justice Department and Federal Communications Commission approved the combination last year after they secured concessions from T-Mobile and Sprint, the third- and fourth-largest U.S. wireless carriers by subscribers, respectively. Those concessions include an agreement that Sprint would sell airwaves and about nine million customer accounts to Dish Network Corp. to set up a fourth nationwide cellphone carrier.

The new agreement allows either company to walk away from the merger without penalty if the transaction hasn't closed by July 1.

T-Mobile executives have said the transition will be smooth, touting their experience handling a past combination with wireless provider MetroPCS.

The new T-Mobile will have more than 90 million U.S. customers and aims to nab more subscribers from AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. The three companies will dominate the U.S. wireless market, though they must also compete with more newcomers, including cable companies that resell service from large carriers.

T-Mobile and Sprint have spent more than seven years pursuing a combination in some form. The two companies abandoned previous attempts in 2013 and 2017 before their boards struck an agreement in early 2018 that would allow T-Mobile to take over its smaller rival, creating a company closer in size to Verizon and AT&T.

「2069年のエンターテインメントと遺品整理」SF小説で未来のマーケティングを描く③ - Agenda note (アジェンダノート)

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 05:29 PM PST

(Reuters) - T- Mobile US (TMUS.O) and Sprint Corp (S.N) are nearing an agreement on new merger terms and the final deal could be announced as soon as Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter.

Deutsche Telekom AG (DTEGn.DE), T-Mobile's parent, will own 43% of the combined company, up from just below 42% earlier, the report added. (on.wsj.com/2SO4bln)

T- Mobile US did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, while Sprint declined to comment.

That compares with $274 billion for AT&T (T.N) and $242 billion for Verizon (VZ.N).

Shares of T-Mobile rose 0.5% to $99.95, while Sprint was up 3.9% at $9.85 in after market trade.

Samsung accidentally sent a random message to Galaxy owners: Did you get the notification? - USA TODAY

Posted: 20 Feb 2020 05:07 PM PST

Did you receive a cryptic message last night that simply says "1"?

If so, it's probably because Samsung accidentally sent the random notice to a "limited" number of smartphone owners worldwide, the company confirmed early Thursday.

The weird push notification, which was reported by people on Twitter, was for Samsung's native "Find My Mobile" app. The notification seemingly would disappear after users tried to open it.

"Girlfriend and I just had exactly the same Samsung push notification," tweeted Michael Fisher, a product reviewer, just after midnight. " Her Note 10+ and my Galaxy Z Flip each alerted with a Find My Mobile notification. When tapped, it disappeared."

Is $13 too much for a box of cereal?  General Mills doesn't think so

Samsung's U.K. help team explained what happened after someone told the company that it was seemingly impacting "every Samsung phone in the world."

"Recently, a notification about 'Find My Mobile 1' occurred on a limited number of Galaxy devices," Samsung's UK arm tweeted. "This was sent unintentionally during an internal test and there is no effect on your device."

It's not the first time smartphone owners have reported receiving weird alerts due to telecom errors.

In November, thousands of people in the U.S. received text messages that were initially sent on Valentine's Day. The problem affected both iPhone and Android users, and it was widespread across multiple carriers. A third party IT-company claimed responsibility for the glitch.
