Inside the New York City Bodegas Going Viral on TikTok - The New York Times Posted: 22 Feb 2020 12:57 AM PST Inside the New York City Bodegas Going Viral on TikTokCaptured on video, the unique culture of the colorful corner stores is winning fans around the world. By The short video clip is filmed from behind a store counter. "If you get this question right," the cameraman, a store clerk, can be heard telling a customer, "you have five seconds to pick up whatever you want." "All right," says the customer, a man with a gray beard. "Ten times 10 minus 50," the clerk says. "Fifty!" the man answers instantly. "Five! Four!" the clerk shouts, counting down. The man turns around quickly toward the small store's shelves and bends down to reach for his prize. "Not my cat!" the clerk yells. The video has been viewed more than five million times on the video-sharing platform TikTok, elevating the profile of the clerk, Ahmed Alwan, and bodega culture itself. It's no longer necessary to live in New York to get a feel for the city's bodegas, thanks to Mr. Alwan and others who use TikTok to post funny video clips that highlight the stores' distinctive culture. They're going viral in the process. Mr. Alwan plays the math game with regular customers at Lucky Candy Deli in the Bronx. A 20-year-old borough native of Yemeni heritage, he has close to 500,000 TikTok followers and he has been featured in reports on CNN, Al Jazeera and several local television stations. ![]() New Yorkers have long regarded bodegas — the 24-hour neighborhood institutions where shoppers can pick up everything from sandwiches and snacks to iPhone chargers and cold medicine — with something like reverence. In a nod to the stores' significance to life in the city, the comedians Desus Nice and the Kid Mero, who are now known for their late-night show on Showtime, started a podcast called "Bodega Boys" in 2015. Part pantries, part community centers, bodegas are typically found in New York's working-class neighborhoods. They are hyperlocal businesses by nature. But because of social media, bodega culture is now winning fans around the world. "We're taking New York and putting it in the palms of people's hands," said John Calzado, 27, whose TikTok handle is @Mr_Nuevayol. Mr. Calzado, who was born and raised in Corona, Queens, has amassed over 370,000 followers on TikTok with videos that celebrate, and poke fun at, New York's Dominican culture. The videos have earned more than three million likes. "You can't have that culture without the bodega," he said. Stuffed with products in colorful packages and home to rotating casts of even more colorful characters, bodegas are highly visual settings. That makes them a great match for TikTok, where more than two million videos can be found under the "bodega" hashtag. For those in their teens and 20s, TikTok and other video-sharing platforms — rather than traditional TV, radio or more text-based apps like Facebook or Twitter — are the main tools for exploring unfamiliar cultures. "What's not obvious to many is how essential the social-video format has been to how Generation Z learns" about "new businesses, about culture, about politics," said Nikhil Srinivasan, a founder of the market-research firm Zebra IQ, which focuses on the demographic. That includes New York's unique corner stores. "I forget that there are people who don't know what bodegas are," said Ezzaddin Alsaedi, who immigrated from Yemen as a child and grew up in the Bronx. He goes by @izzy.tube on TikTok. "Everyone needs a bodega in their life" said Mr. Alsaedi, 20, adding that he did not understand how anyone could go more than a day without visiting one. He might be biased, he conceded: He has worked at his family's Bronx bodega, Happy Deli Grocery, since he was 15. Being there practically every day, Mr. Alsaedi said, he had gathered some hilarious tales. How could he not share them once TikTok came along, he said. "The daily life of what happens in a bodega, it's comedy," he said. "I think people like that my videos add a little comedy to their day." The clips that Mr. Calzado, Mr. Alsaedi and Mr. Alwan share are humorous. But Mr. Alwan's math game, in which he gives snacks away as prizes, is not just for laughs. The videos, he said, illuminated the generous, family spirit that bodega workers share with the people they serve. Most customers who appear in Mr. Alwan's videos are longtime regulars who have been known to take advantage of an unwritten honor code common to bodegas: Loyal shoppers can grab a few necessities on credit, with the understanding that they will settle up later. Mr. Alwan said that while he almost always obliged such requests, he realized in January that the math problems could add a little fun to the transactions. "For me it wasn't about going viral," he said. "When I first started I didn't want to put myself on there. I just wanted the people to see the reactions from my customers and how it made them feel." Mr. Alwan has posted more than two dozen videos featuring math games. He is off screen in almost all of them. "It's not about helping me," he said. "It's about helping my customers." Mr. Alwan said he had inherited his altruistic spirit from his father, who has owned the bodega, a short walk from Crotona Park, for more than a decade. "When I was a little kid, anyone that would ask my dad for credit, he'd always help them." In the past month, Mr. Alwan said, math-game winners had been rewarded with more than $400 worth of goods. He covers the cost from the $350 paycheck he gets every two weeks. He started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for the groceries won during the game, and he has already raised around $9,000. He said that he would use the money to replace the items he gives away and to make donations to needy customers. The bodega workers who make TikTok videos all seem to feel that the relationship between customers and those who work in the stores is unique. "Going to your neighborhood bodega, it's kind of wholesome," Mr. Calzado said. "You know the guy behind the counter, you know the guys walking in. You feel comfortable. There's a sense of family. I think people can feel that. Or they want to." That feeling is part of what has sparked mass interest. Mr. Alwan, Mr. Calzado and Mr. Alsaedi all said they had received messages from around the United States, and beyond. "I have one commenter, I think from London or something, he said he's coming to New York and that I've got to get him a chopped cheese," Mr. Alsaedi said with a laugh, referring to the classic bodega sandwich. "Guys from England talking about coming to New York for a chopped cheese because of TikTok," he said. "That's crazy." Actress by Anne Enright: a writer performing at the peak of her powers - The Irish Times Posted: 22 Feb 2020 12:12 AM PST If you're reaching for a stage metaphor to describe Anne Enright's new novel, I suggest something involving screens, or trapdoors, or an illusionist's mirrored boxes. It's the only explanation for how Actress contains much more than seems possible for a 264-page novel. The setting is family, the subject fame, and the two go at it like knives from the start.
China's changed how it counts virus cases three times now. Here's why - CNN Posted: 21 Feb 2020 11:37 PM PST On Thursday, China announced just 394 new confirmed cases, the lowest number of daily infections reported in weeks. But on Friday, the confirmed number of cases in mainland China increased to 889, according to the country's National Health Commission. This fluctuation could be partly down to a change this week in what is counted as a "confirmed case" in Hubei province, the epicenter of the global outbreak. Here's what we know. How has China changed its method?Last week, Hubei province announced it would count "clinically diagnosed" cases in its numbers. These were patients who demonstrated all the symptoms of Covid-19 but either had not been able to get a test or were believed to have falsely tested negative. Hubei doctors could use CT scans to confirm such coronavirus infections without a test. That decision saw confirmed cases in Hubei province soar, with more than 15,152 new infections announced in mainland China on February 12 alone. Officials said the move to include clinically diagnosed patients was intended to help clear a backlog of suspected cases in Hubei. But on Thursday the government guidelines changed and "clinically confirmed" were excluded from the tally of confirmed cases. Now patients must have a positive lab test result to be counted in the tally. Other cases will be listed as "suspected." The World Health Organization (WHO) reacted to the change in their Friday situation report, noting: "Some previously reported 'clinically diagnosed' cases are thus expected to be discarded over the coming days as laboratory testing is conducted and some are found to be Covid-19-negative." Adding to the confusion is that on Friday, Hubei health authorities announced another new development. Tu Yuanchao, deputy director of Hubei Health Committee, said at a press conference that the provincial government has banned the practice of reducing the number of already confirmed cases. Tu said that all the cases that were confirmed but then retroactively dismissed as they no longer fitted the reporting requirements would be added back to the total tally. "These adjustments in numbers have attracted huge public attention, caused some doubts about the data. As a result, Ying Yong, secretary of the provincial Party committee, attached great importance to this issue. He explicitly ordered that no subtraction be allowed for already-confirmed cases and all subtractions be added back," Tu said. Why has China done this?China cited improved testing capacity of the novel coronavirus as the reason for changing the way confirmed cases are counted in Hubei province, officials said Thursday. Wang Guiqiang, director of the Society of Infectious Diseases of the Chinese Medical Association, said: "In order to resolve the conflict between diagnosis and treatment, in Hubei, such clinical diagnosis was introduced to enable timely treatment of possible patients and reduce fatality rate. "But now that the situation in Hubei has changed. The nucleic acid testing capability has been greatly improved. And now all suspected cases or unconfirmed cases can be tested for nucleic acids quickly. Nucleic acid testing is no longer an issue." Nucleaic acids -- such as DNA -- are the main information-carrying molecules of the cell. Nucleic acid tests analyze swabs taken from a patient's saliva or mucus and look for the genetic materials of the virus. However, scientists have pointed to problems with the nucleic acid test producing false negatives, meaning infected patients could be going undetected. There are also reports in parts of China that a shortage of testing kits and inaccurate results are leading to long delays in the diagnosis and treatment of coronavirus patients. What experts sayThe WHO has previously voiced support for the way China is counting coronavirus infections, and said Thursday it was encouraged by the drop in reported cases. Some experts, however -- including a former US Food and Drug Administration commissioner -- have expressed skepticism over taking China's figures at face value, given the government's track record of suppressing information about this epidemic and previous ones. But David Fisman, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Toronto, said the way that officials define cases of a virus often evolves as their understanding of the illness develops. "One could change a case definition for sort of nefarious reasons to create the illusion that the epidemic is getting better. In this case, China did exactly the opposite," he said. "They broadened their case definition when they needed to, in order not to miss cases, and now that things are under control they're narrowing it down again to make it consistent to easier to keep track of what's really going on." But Eric Feigl-Ding, an epidemiologist and visiting scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said to change track twice in one week was "very unusual." "It's very confusing to see true trends and makes elucidating them complicated," Feigl-Ding continued. "Did (the cases) really decrease or is it because you've been not reporting this the last few days?" Experts have also questioned the reliability of China relying solely on the lab test. "There's evidence that people don't test positive until much later in the in the disease course,' said Feigl-Ding. Asymptomatic cases not counted in ChinaChina's decision to not count patients who have tested positive in the lab but haven't shown any symptoms has also raised eyebrows. This differs from the reporting practice of countries around the world, said Feigl-Ding. For example, 11 Americans who were flown back to the US from Japan last week tested positive for the virus but showed no symptoms. Those asymptomatic patients are counted as confirmed cases in the US, but if they were in China they would not be. "It's extremely frustrating," said Feigl-Ding, who said attempting to count the number of global cases with such a discrepancy, "becomes an apples and oranges situation." He urged China to report how many lab-positive asymptomatic patients it has, as failing to do so prevent "for international comparisons." The US Centers for Disease and Control has said that asymptomatic patients can still be contagious and spread the virus. Is the outbreak under control? At a press conference on Thursday, the WHO's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that although data from China showed a decline in new infections, this was no time for complacency. Experts have warned there could be a renewed increase in cases once China properly returns to work -- hundreds of millions of people around the country have been on lockdown for weeks now. Smaller outbreaks continue to expand elsewhere, including on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan, where two deaths were confirmed Thursday, the first from the hundreds of cases on the ship, which has begun disembarking passengers after a 14-day quarantine this week. There have been 78 cases confirmed with no connection to the ship, raising concerns of a self-sustaining outbreak in the country. On Friday, South Korea recorded an additional 52 additional cases overnight, bringing its total to 156. In Singapore the infection rate continues to climb, with 85 confirmed cases. Similarly, in Hong Kong, there are 68 confirmed cases, and two deaths. Quaden Bayles viral conspiracy theory falsely claims he's 18-years-old - Insider - INSIDER Posted: 21 Feb 2020 07:57 PM PST
When the mother of Quaden Bayles, an Australian boy with a form of dwarfism, posted a video of her son to Facebook where he cried about being bullied at school and said he wanted to end his life, she probably had an idea her son's heartbreaking pleas could go viral. His mother, Yarraka Bayles, had posted online about her son before, achieving at least some degree of virality in the past, appearing multiple times on Australian television to raise awareness for her son's condition. "This is what bullying does," Bayles said in the video posted to Facebook, which has since racked up more than 24 million views. "Can you please educate your children, your families, your friends?" In less than a day, a GoFundMe created by American comedian Brad Williams, who has achondroplasia — the same form of dwarfism as Quaden — raised more than $366,000 from 16,500 unique donors across the world. The donations will go to Quaden and his mother to visit Disneyland in California, according to the GoFundMe page created by the comedian. Even actor Hugh Jackman got involved. The video was viral, and like with any viral trend, particularly where there is money involved, conspiracies arose and began trending on Twitter. When the GoFundMe had an unexpected success, the internet turned sour, inventing baseless conspiracy theories about Quaden's age"yall know that bullied 9 year old people raised over 200,000 dollars for and several celebs gave him attention???," one person wrote on Twitter, gaining nearly 300 retweets. "his names quaden bayles, hes 18 years old and actually rich and an instagram celeb...yall got scammed by an adult m-dget im screaming." Similar statements were echoed all over Twitter on Friday afternoon, as users debated whether the boy at the center of the viral video was a child, or was really an adult posing as a child. At the time this article was written, #QuadenBayles was the fourth-highest Twitter trend in the US, and "He's 9" was number 12. The same screenshot, taken from Facebook, was circulated on Twitter that claimed to out Quaden as an 18-year-old, not a 9-year-old. —shanrrr (@shanohni) February 21, 2020 "Just so you know.. he scammed everybody.. he's 18 has plenty of money and yeah everyone fell for it," the woman wrote in the Facebook post. "Now if I'm wrong please source your link and explain why to me. He's an Instagram celeb @quadosss and deleted captions pertaining to his 18th birthday post." —🌷✭ (@Trashnaldo) February 21, 2020 There's no evidence to suggest that Quaden and his mother are lyingIn a 2015 interview on Australian Network Ten's "Studio 10," Bayles was described as being four years old. "Quaden Bayles is four years old, and this little boy from Brisbane is a powerhouse," the "Studio 10" host said. "He's inspiring an amazing campaign to raise awareness about dwarfism. He's already been through several bouts of surgery with plenty of support from celebrities." In the clip, the anchors and his mother also discuss a previous viral clip of Quaden from October 2014. "That's when things started changing for us," Quaden's mother said in the nearly 5-year-old video. Bayles, who appears much younger than he does in the recent video, is occupied by a toy while his mother is interviewed by the "Studio 10" hosts. The interview was posted to YouTube on April 12, 2015, meaning if Quaden was 4-years-old at the time, he would either be 8, or at most 9, in February 2019. Conspiracy theorists have pointed to a website that lists him as an actor, model, extra and influencerA page for Bayles exists on a website called StarNow, which allows individuals to create profiles to find roles in acting and modeling. While the page includes photos of Bayles accounts and videos of his past appearances on television, like his aforementioned 2015 appearance on "Studio 10," the page does not list any acting credits beyond "previous unpaid speaking roles." He's listed as a "beginner, starting out" underneath the portion of the page about modeling. "Hi I'm Quaden, I'm 8 years old and I'm one of only a few Aboriginal boys born with achondroplasia dwarfism," the bio on StarNow reads, though it's not clear when the bio was authored. "I'm currently based in Brisbane but often travelling. I love sports, animals, food, family and fashion. I have a big social media following for my bright and bubbly personality because I love making people laugh. I embrace my uniqueness and inspire people to be happy and appreciate the simple things in life." The page also features a link to a YouTube upload of Bayles' 25-minute episode of "Living Black," a current-affairs show that airs on Australian network SBS and features stories about Australia's indigenous community. The episode, which aired in 2015, followed Quaden and his mother as he prepared to have surgery on his brain and spine. In the video, Kayla Grant, the show's host, describes Quaden as a four-year-old. Instagram photos have also led to the conspiracies about his ageA couple of photos posted to Quaden's Instagram account seemed to be the place where the theory that he was 18 had originated from, as mentioned in the previous viral Facebook screenshot, as online sleuths and conspiracy theorists have suggested the photos were from his own 18th birthday party. One of the photos in question, which shows Quaden with four other boys is captioned "Happy 18th ma mah," which indicates that he was celebrating someone else's 18th birthday, and not his own. Another photo that also has the large, orange light-up "18" sign does not have a caption.
"So basically hes pretending to be a little kid taking the p-ss out of people with mental health and depression who want to kill them selves and making money off it because hes a little dwarf and is making a profit off it. This makes me even more mad because i used to be in a state of depression and i wanted to kill myself," one person commented under the photo posted to his Instagram page. The comments on the photos, uploaded on January 18, were mixed with some defended Quaden and his mother, while others expressed confusion or outrage over the situation. Yarraka Bayles has a history of posting about her son online, which provides a compelling case that he's actually a childQuaden's mother, Yarraka, has regularly posted photos and videos of her son to Facebook beginning in 2010 around the time he would have been born. In one album, which has photos posted from December 12 to December 15, 2011, a baby Quaden is celebrating his first birthday, according to captions on his photos. If Quaden celebrated his first birthday at the end of 2011, he would have celebrated his ninth birthday at the end of 2019. In 2017, his mother posted another album of photos to her public Facebook profile that purportedly shows him celebrating his seventh birthday. There's a similar album of her son's fifth birthday, shared on December 13, 2015. Yarraka Bayles did not return an Insider request for comment. While it's not possible to verify whether the video was staged as some have claimed, and while Insider has not verified Bayles' birth certificate, evidence suggests that the boy at the center of the internet's latest viral video is nine-years-old and not 18. Here's the story behind that viral backflip that's making everyone freak out - Mashable Posted: 21 Feb 2020 05:27 PM PST ![]() A horrifying video shows just how impressive VFX can be. An uncredited video of a backflip gone wrong went viral on Twitter this week, garnering more than 170,000 likes. In it, a man in stilettos tries to backflip, but when his heels make contact with the ground again, his body crumbles into gooey, fleshy chunks. It's unsettling, disgusting, and absolutely mesmerizing to watch. The original video is a collaboration between Shutter Authority, an Instagram account run by VFX artist Raghav Anil Kumar, and stunt YouTuber Jiemba Sands. "Watching a person break apart into pieces is certainly going to be horrifying," Anil Kumar said in an Instagram DM to Mashable. "But the way the pieces fall apart is more cartoony, much like the stuff we've see in Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry." Anil Kumar noted that Sands' content is usually surprising, like when he gracefully trips over a log or falls off a tree branch, but still ends up on his feet. "My goal was to up the levels on both those aspects and I think the idea worked," Anil Kumar said. "I tried to challenge myself to make something that's already unexpected even more unexpected, and Jiemba's content was the perfect fit for this." It clearly did work — Twitter and Instagram users expressed their shock.
Anil Kumar learned VFX from watching YouTube tutorials. While he's always been interested in special effects — he started playing with video editing on his family's computer in 2004 — he credits the video sharing platform with actually teaching him how to edit. "I was always interested in movie making and VFX, even as a child way before YouTube," Anil Kumar said. "But YouTube over the last decade and a half has certainly made it easier to learn anything." In a behind-the-scenes video, Anil Kumar showed followers a step-by-step guide to making their own gory VFX. Using Adobe After Effects and Blender, he made a three dimensional model of Sands just as his toes would have touched the ground. Then, he animated the crumbling. After some refining, Anil Kumar erased Sands from the original video and replaced him with the model. He said the full process took "a couple of hours to actually make," and then an additional "few more" to tweak and perfect. He advises aspiring VFX artists to keep practicing. "Beyond a certain point, it's hard to find tutorials that actually teach you what you're going after," Anil Kumar said. "That's when we need to apply ourselves and all things we've learnt to create something that represents our vision." So keep applying yourself, and someday you too can disgust the internet with stunning special effects. BTS Talks "ON" and New Album in Apple Music Interview With Zane Lowe - Teen Vogue Posted: 21 Feb 2020 05:07 PM PST ![]() It's real: BTS has brought their new album Map of the Soul: 7 into the world. Now, BTS themselves are opening up about what inspired the record — and how far they've come since debuting in 2013. In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music's New Music Daily, BTS member RM (Kim Namjoon) explained that "ON" functions as a documentation of their career journey thus far. "It's like a big diary for our past seven years," he told New Music Daily. "Like, [a] shrink version of the whole BTS identity. It's, it's kind of about that, you know, we could stumble from time to time but we got back up." The high-energy "ON," which the group previewed on TikTok on Feb. 20, embodies that narrative. "It's very brief," he said. "When we say 'On' it's like, we on, or, like, on air. It's like, bring it on. We could like imagine it [as] many things. Yeah, so it's like a declaration for that we have admitted our destiny, you know, all the pains and all the shadows." And while those themes of destiny, of togetherness through trial and the power of BTS and their ARMY, are present all over the album, they're also especially apparent on new track "We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal," which features the lyrics (per Genius), "We were only seven/But we have you all now/After seven winters and springs/At the tips of our entwined fingers/Yeah, we got to heaven." Elsewhere in the interview, BTS answered the quintessential western interview question about who they'd like to collaborate with next (The Weeknd) and gushed about how fun it was to work with Halsey on "Boy With Luv." ("She was the nicest artist that we ever seen," RM said. "She was so honest. Very down to earth. She's very adorable.") In the flood of U.S. press this week, RM has also been inclined to joke about the seven members' glow-ups since 2013. When The Today Show asked RM to explain why BTS has become a "global sensation," the rapper replied, "There could be many reasons, but you know all the members, they're so cute and attractive..." But he was quick to follow up the accurate quip with a bigger reason: "Music truly transcends languages and nationalities and races," he told Today. A similar moment happened in the Apple Music interview. When reflecting on BTS's success over the past seven years, RM said, "Many things changed. Members got really handsome," to which his fellow bandmates nodded in agreement. But everything about BTS has grown and expanded over the course of their career. "Everything has been up scaled," he added, "like in 2013 we had a performance in front of, like, 300 people, 500 people. But now we're doing the stadium tour. So I think everything got bigger and happier." The explanation for that, according to the band, comes down to relatability — the idea that what BTS has created (and will continue to create) can be for everyone. "I think there are so many people in the world that experience same thing with us and that's why they can relate to us and our message," he said. "I think the sufferings that we have are all similar." Let us slide into your DMs. Sign up for the Teen Vogue daily email. Want more from Teen Vogue? The Sonic movie should have had people puking in their seats - The A.V. Club Posted: 21 Feb 2020 04:57 AM PST The Sonic movie should have had people puking in their seats - The A.V. Club Every Friday, A.V. Club staffers kick off our weekly open thread for the discussion of gaming plans and recent gaming glories, but of course, the real action is down in the comments, where we invite you to answer our eternal question: What Are You Playing This Weekend? There's a glimpse in its opening moments at how crazy the Sonic The Hedgehog movie could have been. The camera pans across a lushly rendered version of the original game series' iconic Green Hill Zone, complete with those OSHA-defying ramps and loop-the-loops that appear to have naturally grown out of its neon-verdant foliage. It's the perfect playground for the kind of high-speed madness that the Sonic games embody at their best (and, frankly, worst, though more on that in a second). Unfortunately, a glimpse is all we get; before you know it, Sonic's surrogate owl mom, Longclaw, has been sent back to Ga'Hoole where she belongs—courtesy of Knuckles' evil cousins, who get blessedly little screen time—and the Ben Schwartz-voiced speedster is cursed to live out the rest of his life in rural Montana, tragically deprived of the giant springboards and collapsing dirt bridges he was born to traverse. Now, would a fully Moebius-based Sonic The Hedgehog movie have eventually turned into hideous, unwatchable CGI soup? Almost certainly. And would the need for a host of non-human characters have forced director Jeff Fowler and his team to dip even further into the Sonic universe's roster of soul-draining also-rans? Indubitably. (Nobody needs to see a Sonic movie version of Charmy Bee or Big The Cat. Nobody.) But given that Sonic The Hedgehog is a movie where a character primarily known for his speed spends most of his time riding around in a truck, even a taste of the sheer out-of-control adrenaline the apex Sonic games trade in would have been welcome, even if it did send the movie careening off the rails. Because that's the core, and the paradox, of all "good" Sonic games: They're platforming games where you can't see the next platform coming, because "gotta go fast" and "let's be careful here" are inherently opposed. In a genre built on precision, the most beloved Sonic games are powered more by hope, as you blindly fling yourself off of cliffs at maximum speed, vaguely praying that you'll hit the next part of whatever line the developers half-expected you to hit. It's exhilarating when it works and infuriating the rest of the time, which tends to be a skosh more than good game design would seemingly dictate. But then that's the price you paid signing on for the ultimate video game expression of "speed is good." Do you think this Sonic would care that the internet thought he looked like a human-toothed homunculus dredged up from a dentist's darkest hell? Heck no: He's too busy bouncing off a spike you never saw coming because he didn't realize that this cliff was one you're supposed to jump off, instead of just running. It's a vibe his screen counterpart could use more of. With no disrespect to James Marsden or Ben Schwartz—the latter of whom exudes almost herculean charm in his efforts to save leaden jokes despite being exiled in the voice-over booth—the only performer embodying the real Sonic energy in the movie is Jim Carrey, who hurls himself at ad-libs and weird facial expressions with the same brio of a Sonic Mania player saying, "Fuck it, I'm just going to hold right until something good happens or I die." Instead, the majority of the movie has the feeling of those unfortunate mid-2000s Sonic games where Sega tried to capture both blinding speed and clarity, and ended up with big old dollops of slow-moving nothing instead. (Looking at you, every single 3D Sonic game.) A Sonic The Hedgehog movie too afraid to cut loose with speed—to awkwardly slam into five proverbial walls for every one run executed with flawless energy—is one that fails to capture the essence of the character. The Sonic movie should have left audiences lurching out of the aisles in fits of hedgehog-induced motion sickness, horfing up the popcorn-laden vomit of the happily disoriented. Instead, these viewers listlessly rise, stomachs depressingly settled, and untouched by the chaos that is this franchise's most distinctive stock in trade. 2020-02-21 06:00:00Z https://news.google.com/__i/rss/rd/articles/CBMiWmh0dHBzOi8vZ2FtZXMuYXZjbHViLmNvbS90aGUtc29uaWMtbW92aWUtc2hvdWxkLWhhdmUtaGFkLXBlb3BsZS1wdWtpbmctaW4tdGhlaXItMTg0MTc4MDI0ONIBXmh0dHBzOi8vZ2FtZXMuYXZjbHViLmNvbS90aGUtc29uaWMtbW92aWUtc2hvdWxkLWhhdmUtaGFkLXBlb3BsZS1wdWtpbmctaW4tdGhlaXItMTg0MTc4MDI0OC9hbXA?oc=5 |
