It's Context, Not Length, That Determines The Success Of Mobile Video - AdExchanger Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:38 PM PST ![]() "On TV And Video" is a column exploring opportunities and challenges in advanced TV and video. Today's column is written by Jonathan Stringfield, vice president and global head of business marketing, measurement and insights at Activision Blizzard Media. Video advertising on mobile – a reasonably recent phenomenon – has increasingly spurred conversations about optimizations and best practices. The debates have focused on orientation (horizontal vs. vertical), format (pre- vs. mid-roll) and, perhaps most hotly contested, ad length. The prevailing wisdom of "shorter is always better" has started to show some cracks, as mobile innovation video darling Snapchat, a longtime bastion of shorter-form mobile, recently announced it would allow ads up to three minutes long on the platform. That's quite a shift from the previous 10-second limitation. Why the change? Certainly, one could assume that the opportunity to take on 15- or 30-second TV spots, which are almost never in short supply from advertisers, spurred the change. Alternatively, the answer could be that there is a real opportunity for longer ad spots on mobile, provided the right context and consumer mindset. If we disabuse ourselves of the notion that mobile video advertising is intrinsically relegated to shorter formats, will consumers accept longer ads on their phones, and are there any benefits for brands? The research seems to substantiate both of these questions in the affirmative, and like so many things in advertising impact, context is key. An IPG Media Lab study showed that a minimum of 15 seconds is generally needed to be truly persuasive, with both brand favorability and purchase intent increasing in a 15-second ad compared to a 5- or 10-second ad. When compared to 30-second and 45- to 60-second ads, both metrics increased even further. Kantar Millward Brown affirmed this perspective in a POV, "Optimizing Ads: Is Less Always More?", arguing that making ads shorter and more impactful does not necessarily make them more effective. Snapchat seems to be specifically embracing longer ads to be included in longer-format content experiences. These more leaned-in mobile experiences, which could include video on demand, gaming and streaming video, represent a natural opportunity for the ad length to fit the ad experience without damaging the consumer experience. This does not, of course, imply that advertisers should simply port all their 30-second ads from TV directly to all mobile applications. The reality is quite a bit more nuanced; much of the discourse on the best ad length for mobile video, and the lion's share of the insights, have been provided by feed-based social networks. It's entirely likely that shorter is better in these quick-scroll environments. However, in some lean-in contexts, there are opportunities for longer content to find a home. The takeaway for brands, agencies and advertisers is straightforward: Think about the context through which you are reaching your consumers, understand that it matters, and reconcile that there is not a one-size-fits-all strategy for mobile video. Of course, developing these strategies does not come without costs, as this implies a more nuanced mobile plan across a variety of touchpoints for consumers, including social, gaming, music, streaming, etc. I'd argue the creative license – and potential efficiencies in porting TV assets to mobile – more than make up for the investment, and thus provide a solid foundation for brands to increase their impact on mobile. The takeaway for publishers is perhaps no less clear, though maybe a somewhat bitter pill to swallow: They are leaving money on the table. TV spots will almost never be in short supply. While the ongoing recommendation to custom-fit video to specific quick-hit mobile environments is undoubtedly the right move from a consumer and brand impact perspective, it is asking brands to jump through a lot of hoops. The middle ground is perhaps to not simply put the burden on advertisers to clip videos to platform taste, but rather, think carefully about how the consumer experience with the platform can be enriched in a way where the value brands are providing shines through, even if it takes a little more time to do so. The Wuhan coronavirus death toll in mainland China has overtaken SARS - CNN Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:19 PM PST ![]() More than 360 people have died of the disease in China, the country's health authorities said Monday. The total number of cases in mainland China stood at 17,205 as of Sunday evening, an increase of over 2,800 on the previous day, or almost 20%. The 2003 outbreak of SARS -- another coronavirus strand -- infected 5,327 people in mainland China, with 349 deaths. The first death from the virus outside China was confirmed over the weekend. Philippine health officials said that a 44-year-old Chinese man died Saturday after flying into the country from Wuhan. So far, more than 175 cases have been reported outside of China -- the majority of them with a direct link to the country -- across more than 25 countries and territories worldwide. Many countries have begun closing their borders to visitors from China, with major airlines canceling flights to and from the country. Germany confirmed its 10th case on Sunday, and there were also new cases reported in South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Macao and Hong Kong. The United States, Australia and New Zealand have all announced that they will not allow foreign nationals who have traveled from or transited through China to enter. Nationals from those countries will face mandatory quarantine on arrival. Economic painIn China, Monday is supposed to be the first day back at work after an extended Lunar New Year holiday ended on February 2. However much of the country will not be returning, with multiple local authorities extending the break in an attempt to avoid further spread of the virus. Hubei, the central Chinese province of which Wuhan is the capital, will lengthen its holiday by an "appropriate extent," authorities said Saturday, while Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and the manufacturing provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang will also reportedly remain on holiday until at least next week. With much of China's economic heartland still closed, concerns are growing over the impact to the Chinese economy. The Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets -- which have been closed since January 24 -- plunged by around 10% on opening Monday. The People's Bank of China said Sunday it would inject 1.2 trillion yuan ($173 billion) into the Chinese markets in order to ensure "reasonably ample liquidity" in the banking system and keep currency markets stable. The net amount of liquidity being injected into the markets will be much lower, however. According to Reuters calculations using central bank data, more than 1 trillion yuan worth of other short-term bond sales will mature Monday. That brings the net amount of cash flooding into the markets down to 150 billion yuan ($21.4 billion). State news agency Xinhua on Monday published a defiant commentary headlined "Chinese economy resilient enough to counter virus shock." "The epidemic will eventually come to an end, just like the winter will fade away. The negative implications of the virus on the Chinese economy will be short-lived, and the economic fundamentals are solid enough to withstand its blow," Xinhua said. "Doomsayers take this chance to hype again the China-collapse theory. But seasoned observers disagree." It quoted a former chief economist at the Asian Development Bank saying that while the economic impact in the first quarter will likely be big, perhaps driving nationwide annual growth down a percentage point, "it will be substantially offset by above-the-trend growth in the rest of the year if the epidemic can be contained soon." Fight to control the virusIn Wuhan itself, the epicenter of the virus outbreak where most of the deaths have been reported, there was a glimmer of hope Monday, as the first of two purpose-built hospitals opened for business. The hospitals, built in about a week by thousands of workers on round-the-clock shifts and based on a similar plan used during the 2003 SARS outbreak, will be run by People's Liberation Army medical personnel. They will add thousands of extra beds to Wuhan's extremely strained medical system. Thousands of health workers, including PLA medics, have also been dispatched to help out in ordinary hospitals in the city and other parts of Hubei. But while Wuhan should be seeing some additional capacity Monday, Hong Kong will be seeing the opposite. Health care workers in the semi-autonomous Chinese city are due to go on strike over what they see as the failure of the city's government to fully shut the border with China. While border crossings have been slashed by around 80% and many flights to and from mainland China have been stopped, some connections are still open. There is widespread fear in Hong Kong -- where 15 coronavirus cases have been confirmed so far -- of a repeat of SARS, which infected more than 1,700 people and killed 286 in 2003. Most front line medical workers will not strike, their unions said, in order to continue serving the public, but backroom and support staff will walk out. Studying infectionMany countries have begun evacuating their citizens out of the worst hit areas of Hubei, while other nations, in addition to closing their borders to all visitors from China, are ordering mandatory quarantines of nationals returning home. Major airlines -- including British Airways, American Airlines, Air Canada and Lufthansa -- have canceled or slashed routes to China for the foreseeable future. Much of the concern is driven by the lack of a confirmed cure or treatment protocol for the virus, which appears to be far more contagious -- though not as deadly -- as SARS. About 10% of SARS cases resulted in death, while the toll from Wuhan coronavirus cases stands at about 2%. On Sunday, doctors in Thailand said they had successfully treated one Wuhan coronavirus patient with a combination of antiviral drugs. Dr. Kriangsak Atipornwanich, a doctor at Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok, said at a Ministry of Health news conference that he had treated a 71-year-old woman patient from China with a combination of drugs used in HIV and flu treatments. He said the patient had previously been treated only with anti-HIV drugs. Officials at the news conference said the latest lab test showed there was no trace of the virus in the patient's respiratory system. Hospitals in Beijing have previously reported using HIV drugs to treat coronavirus patients, though it is unclear if they have been successful. With some apparent good news came another worrying development, however. Scientists in China discovered over the weekend that fecal samples from patients infected with the Wuhan coronavirus tested positive for the pathogen. This means it is highly possible the virus can exist in and spread through contaminated fecal matter. Previously it had been thought the virus mainly spread through droplets emitted when a person coughs or sneezes, or through other direct contact. One of the major SARS outbreaks during the 2003 epidemic was in the Hong Kong housing estate of Amoy Gardens. There, the virus is believed to have spread "via aerosolized fecal matter through the internal sewer system," according to a report by the US National Institute of Medicine. Williams' shootout goal lifts Hurricanes past Canucks, 4-3 - WITN Posted: 02 Feb 2020 09:48 PM PST ![]() RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — For the second time in four games since returning from an extended offseason, Justin Williams scored the winning goal in a shootout on Sunday as he lifted the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 decision over the Vancouver Canucks. Williams wristed a shot inside the post to the right of Thatcher Demko, giving the Hurricanes a 2-1 edge in the shootout. Carolina goalie James Reimer then used his left pad to stop Bo Horvat to clinch the win. Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour was counting on Williams' experience when he chose him as the team's third skater in the shootout. Williams also scored the shootout winner in his first game back on Jan. 19 against the New York Islanders. "He's a pretty clutch guy. So that's your why," Brind'Amour said. "If you look at the numbers historically, he's probably one of our best. I haven't looked at it in a while, but it's a pretty easy decision throwing him out there." Carolina is 3-1 in four games since Williams rejoined the team. Williams also scored twice in regulation in a 4-1 win over Winnipeg on Jan. 21. On Sunday, the Hurricanes got goals in regulation from Nino Niederreiter, Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov as Reimer made 32 saves. Warren Foegele had a pair of assists for Carolina. Elias Pettersson scored twice, Tyler Myers added a goal and Oscar Fantenberg and J.T. Miller each had two assists for Vancouver, whose five-game winning streak was snapped. Demko made 29 saves, including an amazing stop with the shaft of his stick in overtime against Teuvo Teravainen after a cross-ice feed from Brett Pesce. "That was a very good hockey game," Canucks coach Travis Green said. "I thought our team was outstanding tonight. Tough game, tough building, against a team that was desperate. I thought it was a pretty intense game, probably fitting that it went into overtime and then a shootout." Carolina, which is headed out West for a four-game road trip, wrapped up a stretch of five straight home games with three wins, one loss in regulation and an overtime loss. Just as importantly, the Hurricanes appeared to dodge what could have been a serious injury to Pesce, one of their top defensemen. In the second period, Pesce was hit in the right wrist by a shot from the point and collapsed to the ice, which was quickly soaked with blood. He rushed off the ice and to the locker room for treatment. Brind'Amour said it appeared that the puck hit Pesce in a vein in a spot that had no padding. But he returned in the third period and played in overtime as well after suffering an injury that left even some of his teammates feeling squeamish. "When I saw his hand, I said, 'I don't want to see that,' because it was bleeding so much," Svechnikov said. Svechnikov, whose third-period goal had given the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead, said seeing Pesce return gave the team a boost. Later, the team got another lift when Williams took the ice for the shootout. "He's something special in a shootout," Svechnikov said. "You just sit on the bench confident because he is going to go in and score for us." The Canucks, meanwhile, were hardly despondent after adding a point in the standings to lift their season total to 65, which is second-best in the Western Conference. One day earlier, they posted an overtime win over the New York Islanders. "We battled hard after playing yesterday," Myers said. "I thought we came out pretty well tonight. A lot of positive to take from tonight." NOTES Hughes, the NHL's rookie points leader, added to his total with an assist on the game's opening goal. Hughes has 39 points on eight goals and 31 assists. The Canucks selected Hughes seventh overall in the 2018 NHL draft. ... Hurricanes points leader Teravainen has a three-game point streak, with six points on two goals and four assists during that time. … The Canucks didn't get called for a penalty until there was 9:06 remaining in the third period; the home crowd registered its disappointment with the officiating throughout the game. UP NEXT Canucks: Visit Boston on Tuesday in the fourth of five road games in a row. Hurricanes: At St. Louis on Tuesday for the opening game of a four-game road trip. President holds meeting following evacuation of Indonesians from China - ANTARA Posted: 02 Feb 2020 09:28 PM PST ![]() Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a press conference following the meeting that the Indonesian Government will temporarily ban direct flights from and to Mainland China. The policy will take effect at 00.00 a.m. local time on Wednesday. All visitors coming in from Mainland China, who had been there for 14 days are also temporarily banned from entering or having a transit in Indonesia, the Foreign Minister said. The government is also stopping the visa-free policy and issuance of visa on arrival towards Chinese nationals residing in Mainland China for the time being. Indonesian nationals are asked to not to travel to Mainland China. The limited meeting came after the government airlifted 243 Indonesian nationals, including five members of an advance team, from Wuhan, and have them returned to the country. They have arrived in Natuna and will undergo a 14-day observation period, joined by 42 personnel of the evacuation team. "A total of 285 people will undergo observations. Airlines scramble to enforce new coronavirus travel restrictions in 'imperfect system' - CNBC Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:59 PM PST ![]() The Trump administration's sweeping new travel restrictions aimed at combating the spread of the new coronavirus — announced Friday — took effect on Sunday afternoon, leaving airline employees around the world scrambling to enforce them. More than 17,200 people have fallen ill to the coronavirus worldwide so far, killing at least 361 people in China and a 44-year-old man in the Philippines, according to international health officials. The new travel rules prohibit foreigners who have been in China in the last 14 days from entering the U.S., unless they are an immediate family member of a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident or meet other exemptions. The U.S. is imposing a 14-day quarantine on citizens who have visited China's Hubei province — where Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus, is located — and self-quarantines for citizens who have been in China over the last 14 days. Hong Kong and Macau are exempt, according to the president's proclamation. The Transportation Security Administration on Sunday instructed airlines with flights to the U.S. from other countries to screen passengers before boarding to find out whether they've been in China recently, according to a security directive that was reviewed by CNBC. Check-in and gate agents or other employees are required to question travelers, look through recent reservations and possibly their passports for entry or exit stamps, according to the order, which provided examples of the stamps from China. Airlines recommended U.S.-bound travelers arrive at airports earlier than usual. TSA noted that it is not involved in screening air travelers bound for the U.S. from abroad but an agency spokeswoman said it "is requiring carriers to enforce portions of the President's proclamation that limit who may board a commercial aircraft destined for the United States." The airlines don't solely have to rely on passenger answers and must work with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to make a determination, the spokeswoman said. The restrictions are complex and will mean all travelers headed to the U.S. will likely get questioned, not just people coming directly from China, from where many carriers have already cut routes. From Mexico City to Rome to Dubai, airline staff or their local contractors will have to question all travelers before they can board a U.S.-bound flight in case they had traveled from China to another country before their flight to the U.S. The screening will apply to tens of thousands of travelers a day as a result. U.S. Customs and Border Protection figures show it processed an average of 371,780 people at U.S. airports each day in the last fiscal year, although February travel demand is much lower than in the summer. Some 14,000 people flew into the U.S. from China each day that year. Foreign travelers who fall under the U.S. restrictions will be denied boarding. The U.S. citizens and permanent residents who have been in China in the last 14 days must be rerouted into one of 11 airports — Atlanta, Chicago's O'Hare, Los Angeles International, San Francisco International, Honolulu, Seattle, Newark, Washington Dulles, Detroit, Dallas/Fort Worth, and New York's Kennedy Airport — for enhanced screening. "We realize this could provide added stress and prolong travel times for some individuals, however public health and security experts agree these measures are necessary to contain the virus and protect the American people," DHS acting Secretary Chad Wolf said in a statement on Sunday. "To minimize disruptions, CBP and air carriers are working to identify qualifying passengers before their scheduled flights. Once back in the U.S., it's imperative that individuals honor self-quarantine directives to help protect the American public." That means that if a U.S. citizen was in China and then traveled to Dublin with a later flight to Boston, the carrier would need to rebook them to one of those designated U.S. airports so they could be screened on arrival. Such a system relies on the self-reporting by passengers and how much information airline employees can confirm. "It's an imperfect system," said Henry Harteveldt, founder of travel consulting firm Atmosphere Research Group. "This is not the best approach. It relies on the honor system and some passengers are just not going to be truthful." It's not the first time airline employees have been tasked with enforcing new rules for travelers. Gate agents and others have had to screen travelers for what has been sometimes confusing restrictions, such as the 2017 in-cabin electronics bans and outright bans on citizens of several nations. Failing to follow restrictions can be costly as airlines are responsible for flying individuals without accepted documents back. They can also face fines of around $3,500, according to the International Air Transport Association, an airline trade group. After 'Roma' glory, actress Aparicio has new role -- activist - Yahoo News Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:21 PM PST ![]() Mexico City (AFP) - A year after the movie "Roma" catapulted her from obscurity to an Oscar nomination, Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio is using the spotlight to promote causes close to her heart: indigenous and women's rights in her country. Taking a break from film sets, the 26-year-old from the Mixtec community in the southern state of Oaxaca is dedicating this year to working as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for indigenous peoples. In her new role, Aparicio -- the first indigenous woman ever nominated for a best actress Oscar -- returned to school this week to give a talk at Harvard University's Mexico Conference 2020. In an interview with AFP in Mexico City, she said she understood that fame and her career would be "a series of ups and downs." "So the thing is to use this current high to lend visibility [to indigenous communities] and to explain to more people the things that I have been concerned about," she said. "It's been gratifying." Aparacio became an inspiration to many Mexicans when she earned rave reviews for her role in "Roma," by Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron. The film ended up winning three Oscars. Her "Roma" character Cleo is a domestic worker inspired by Cuaron's own childhood nanny. The film's success not only brought her international plaudits, but she ended up doing interviews and photo shoots for top magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair -- where indigenous faces are rare. Of course, the praise was accompanied by some vitriol on social media. Many with indigenous roots in Mexico have experienced discrimination, in a society that has been reluctant to acknowledge its own racism. "We are not new faces, we are simply the people we always were, but who nobody had ever bothered looking at before," she said. "May we never again be afraid to say, 'Enough! We exist too!'" - 'I am a feminist' - On the back of "Roma," Aparicio connected with many ordinary women in Mexico, and pushed celebrities to lend their support to the Latin American feminist movement. Chilean singer Mon Laferte invited Aparicio to appear in the video for her song "Plata Ta Ta," a high-octane reggaeton performance in which Aparicio wore a green headscarf, the international symbol of the struggle for women's rights. In her native Oaxaca -- the second place in Mexico after the capital to decriminalize abortion -- conservatives have criticized her liberal stance, but she is holding firm. "Every one of us is free to decide for themselves, depending on their situation," she said. "I am simply supporting the right which all women have: we are free to make decisions about our own bodies." Violence against women in Mexico -- 10 are killed every day, according to the United Nations -- and female empowerment come up often when Aparicio speaks, and she describes herself as a "feminist for equality." "I am a feminist and I always have been," she said. "Lots of times, people think being a feminist means being 'more than men' when in reality, it's just a question of seeking the equality that so many of us lack." - Back to her roots - Aparicio stumbled into the world of movies by chance. Having recently graduated as a teacher, she accompanied her sister to a casting call -- with no idea that she herself would be cast and it would change her life. Her sudden flurry of globetrotting due to the success of "Roma" left her longing to return to her hometown of Tlaxiaco, a community of 40,000 people in the mountains who now see her as a star. "When I go back home, they say to me, 'What are you washing the dishes for? You just sit down, you're a celebrity!' and I quip back that the plates aren't going to suddenly slip out of my hands," she said. OneWest Bank Unveils Mobile App For SMBs - pymnts.com Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:38 PM PST CIT's Southern California branch network, OneWest Bank, unveiled a new mobile app to help small businesses meet their financial goals. "Small business owners are often on-the-go and are increasingly reliant on digital banking tools to keep up with their busy schedules," said Heather Ellison, head of Retail Banking for OneWest Bank in an announcement. "Our new app is an accessible and convenient solution for local entrepreneurs looking to manage their money digitally, from anywhere at any time." The business app of OneWest Bank lets small businesses digitally deposit checks, pay bills, schedule appointments, transfer funds between accounts at OneWest and find the closest branch. Customers using the app can also ask for funding to aid their working capital and equipment financing needs from their mobile devices. OneWest, for its part, provides a wide array of account features and products meant to help small businesses. Those offerings include Money Market Savings and OneBusiness Interest Checking accounts. OneWest also lets clients apply for equipment financing via its parent company, CIT, as well as its national Small Business Solutions arm. In separate news, a J.D. Power survey suggests small businesses have started to embrace mobile banking. The J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Small Business Banking Satisfaction Survey registered an 8 percent year-over-year increase in the percentage of small businesses that use the mobile banking app of their banks. J.D. Power's research also discovered a 20 percent year-on-year increase in satisfaction ratings across all small business banking experience aspects analyzed. Approximately two-thirds of small businesses that tap in the mobile app of their bank indicate they "definitely will" use their bank for another offering, in contrast to only 53 percent among small businesses that don't tap into mobile banking as of now. Small business mobile banking adoption is now at a higher rate than it is in the retail banking space, according to the survey. ![]() "Mobile" - Google News February 02, 2020 at 04:57PM https://ift.tt/38VQk1k OneWest Bank Unveils Mobile App For SMBs - pymnts.com "Mobile" - Google News https://ift.tt/2P9t7Cg Shoes Man Tutorial Pos News Update Meme Update Korean Entertainment News Japan News Update |
Philippines Reports First Coronavirus Death Outside China - The New York Times Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:57 PM PST ![]() HONG KONG — A 44-year-old man in the Philippines has died of the coronavirus, the first known fatality outside China, health officials said on Sunday, as the number of deaths jumped to more than 360 and other countries expanded travel restrictions in an effort to slow the spread of the outbreak. The man, whose name was not released, was a resident of Wuhan, China, the center of the outbreak. He died on Saturday after developing what officials called "severe pneumonia." "This is the first known death of someone with 2019-nCoV outside of China," the World Health Organization's office in the Philippines said in a statement, using the technical shorthand for the coronavirus. Philippine health officials said the man had arrived in the country on Jan. 21 with a 38-year-old woman. She remains under observation. Hours before the announcement, the Philippines said it was temporarily barring non-Filipino travelers arriving from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. In Hong Kong, a semiautonomous Chinese territory, a new union representing health care workers vowed to strike on Monday to force the city's government to ban travel from mainland China. Fears in the city escalated after another case was confirmed and officials could not rule out the possibility that the patient, an 80-year-old man, had been infected within Hong Kong. "We are very worried," Chuang Shuk-kwan, a health official, said at a news conference on Sunday. "Everyone should prepare mentally for the possibility that the disease is spreading within the community." Hours later, the government announced its 15th case, which appeared to confirm local transmission of the virus. A 72-year-old woman who had largely stayed at home was infected, likely via her son. He returned from a trip to Wuhan on Jan. 23. By Sunday, with infections standing at more than 14,000 worldwide, nations continued to expand travel restrictions and bar visitors from China. New Zealand said on Sunday that it would deny entry to visitors departing from or traveling through mainland China for two weeks starting on Monday. Citizens and residents of New Zealand will be allowed entry from China but will be required to quarantine themselves for 14 days, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said. "Ultimately, this is a public health decision," she said, adding that the restrictions were precautionary measures to keep New Zealand virus-free and to contain the worldwide outbreak. In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting of ministers in Jerusalem on Sunday to make national preparations "because we estimate that the virus will arrive," his office said in a statement. Along with preparations "to isolate those who have been infected and treat them" for two weeks at home, the country had temporarily closed "land crossings, seaports and airports to arrivals from China." Israeli citizens who visited China will be allowed to return, the statement said. In addition, about 1,700 Chinese construction workers whose work permits had expired and who were supposed to return to China this weekend would be granted extended stays in Israel. They are being allowed to keep working rather than being replaced by newly recruited laborers who could potentially arrive with the virus, according to Israeli news reports. The United States and Australia have also expanded travel restrictions, temporarily barring noncitizens who recently traveled to China. South Korea said on Sunday that it would deny entry to any foreigners who have traveled in the past 14 days to Wuhan and surrounding Hubei Province, the area at the center of the outbreak. In a move to help stop the spread of the virus in Wuhan, the Chinese authorities have fulfilled a promise to build a new 1,000-bed specialty hospital in the city within 10 days. About 1,400 military medics are to begin working there on Monday. South Korea's travel restrictions will take effect on Tuesday, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said, as the number of people testing positive for the coronavirus in South Korea increased to 15. Any South Korean returning home who has been in Hubei Province within the past two weeks will be subject to 14 days of self-quarantine and monitoring, the government said. It also said it would bar South Koreans from visiting China as tourists. Japan will bar noncitizens who traveled recently to Hubei. Taiwan is denying entry to Chinese nationals from Guangdong, a southern coastal province that has been battered by the virus, and travelers who recently visited the area. Vietnam recently barred almost all flights to and from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan until May 1, according to the United States Federal Aviation Administration. But Vietnam then eased its ban, allowing flights from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to continue while keeping the prohibitions in place for mainland China, the aviation authorities said. Taiwan, which is self-ruled but which China claims is part of its territory, complained on Sunday that it was being punished with flight restrictions because the World Health Organization considers it part of China. Italy included Taiwan in a ban on flights from China, a move that it announced after the W.H.O. declared the coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency. While Vietnam backtracked, Italy's ban remains, Taiwan's foreign minister told reporters. Taiwan has 10 confirmed cases, versus more than 17,000 in mainland China, said the foreign minister, Joseph Wu. "The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Taiwan is not higher than in most countries affected," he said. "Other than China, no other country, no other country has had its flight banned by Italy." China has long sought to limit Taiwan's diplomatic relations and recognition at international bodies such as the W.H.O. Taiwan previously participated as an observer at the World Health Assembly, the group's governing body. But it has since been excluded as Beijing has increased pressure on Taiwan under President Tsai Ing-wen, who is skeptical about closer ties with Beijing. "It is not fair to the 23 million people in Taiwan, and it is not fair to other people who might otherwise obtain support from Taiwan if we were not excluded," Mr. Wu said. In Hong Kong, some residents are pushing for tougher restrictions on arrivals from mainland China. As many as 9,000 medical workers have pledged to strike beginning on Monday, a threat that alarms the territory's officials as they are struggling to contain the outbreak. The workers are demanding that Hong Kong close all checkpoints to visitors from mainland China, saying they represent a threat to health care workers. The workers plan to paralyze nonemergency and emergency services at hospitals, said the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance, a union formed during the city's antigovernment protest movement. "We believe such actions are our last resort," the alliance wrote in a statement on Saturday night. Under the plan, nonessential hospital staff members who belong to the union would not go to work on Monday. If the government did not close the border and heed their other demands by 9 p.m. local time, union members handling emergency services would also strike, the union said. Matthew Cheung, Hong Kong's No. 2 official, appealed to medical workers to reconsider, comparing them to guardians of the public. "At this critical moment, I believe the general public would count on medical personnel to fight against the epidemic together, in the spirit of professionalism," he wrote in a blog post on Sunday. Government officials in Hong Kong say that the number of visitors from the mainland and other countries had decreased significantly after they closed several border points and rail stations and cut flight arrivals by half. But several border locations remain open, and many medical workers fear being overwhelmed by a flood of visitors seeking treatment in Hong Kong's well-regarded health care system. They have also voiced frustrations about patients from mainland China hiding their travel and medical history, potentially endangering other patients. Reporting was contributed by Chris Buckley from Wuhan, China; Alexandra Stevenson and Sui-Lee Wee from Hong Kong; Choe Sang-Hun from South Korea; Jason Gutierrez from Manila; and David Halbfinger and Isabel Kershner from Jerusalem. Sam Lafferty's goal in first game back helps Penguins defeat Capitals - TribLIVE Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:48 PM PST ![]() WASHINGTON — Sam Lafferty's hot stretch continued Sunday when he helped the Penguins beat the Washington Capitals, 4-3. He scored the Penguins' first goal at 11 minutes, 46 seconds of the first period. It was his third goal in four games over a span of 10 days. Granted, two of those goals and three of those games were in the American Hockey League, but Lafferty will take whatever offense he can generate at any level of hockey. Recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday, Lafferty returned to the lineup after being assigned to the AHL on Jan. 21. He replaced forward Andrew Agozzino on the fourth line with Alex Galchenyuk and Anthony Angello on his wings. "It's been kind of all over the place," Lafferty said of his past week-and-a-half. "But being able to play a lot of hockey, which has been fun. It's nice to be on the road trip here and get a win today." Coming back from their 10-day break, the Penguins opted to leave Lafferty in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to give him more playing time than he had been seeing in the NHL of late. Over the previous 12 NHL games he was eligible for, he had been a healthy scratch for five of those games and missed two others with an illness. In the five games Lafferty played during that stretch, he averaged only 7:23 of ice time. During his three most recent games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Lafferty played more while serving as a top-six forward and produced two goals. (Time on ice statistics are not maintained for AHL games.) "Being able to play more minutes, you just get back to the basics and figure some stuff out," said the Hollidaysburg native. "It's definitely helpful. It's good. I feel more confident now." The goal he scored Sunday was pretty good. At 11:46 of the first period, Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom tried to skate the puck through the neutral zone up the right wing but lost the puck on a poke check by Galchenyuk. Lafferty claimed the loose puck at center ice, raced into the offensive zone with speed on the left wing and lifted a wrister from the left circle to the far side past goaltender Ilya Samsonov's glove. "A good turnover, a good play by (Galchenyuk) there," Lafferty said. "(Capitals defenseman Radko Gudas) was pretty far back because I think he wasn't really anticipating it. So I had some room to shoot and just let one go." It was Lafferty's fifth goal of the season and his first in the NHL since Nov. 30. It was also his first NHL point in 15 games. Lafferty professes his focus isn't on producing points. "No one really puts too much emphasis on that for me right now," Lafferty said. "It's just about playing the right way and back to the basics. What makes me tick as a player. Those are the most important things." His impact on the game went beyond his goal. "He's had a couple of strong games in Wilkes-Barre," Mike Sullivan said. "(A few) of the things that we like about Sam is his size and his speed. He's a guy that, when he's skating, he's very effective. We thought against an opponent like Washington, he might be a guy that we could utilize on that fourth line. He had a great game. He was skating out there. He was physical when he had an opportunity. He scores a huge goal for us." Lafferty logged only 5:41 of ice time on nine shifts but had three shots on three attempts and was 3 for 3 on faceoffs. By any measure, he had his most effective games in quite some time. "When young guys, particularly rookies, score, the whole bench lifts up because you're excited for him," said veteran defenseman Jack Johnson. "We need those young guys to be a big part of this. When we're on the ice with them, we don't treat them like rookies. We don't want them to feel that way. They're no different than guys that have been in the league for 10 years." Recalled three different times this season, Lafferty is hopeful his most recent will be his final. "It's more just a reminder that back to the basics, what it takes to be successful," he said of his most recent assignment to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. "I got back to some of those things. I feel like I'm playing good right now." Follow the Penguins all season long. Seth Rorabaugh is a Tribune-Review staff writer. You can contact Seth by email at [email protected] or via Twitter . Williams' shootout goal lifts Hurricanes past Canucks, 4-3 - New Haven Register Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:18 PM PST RALEIGH, N.C.

Pastrnak's NHL-best 38th goal caps 6-1 Bruins romp past Wild - GazetteNET Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:48 AM PST ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Boston Bruins used the break to recharge their power play. The time off sure didn't slow David Pastrnak down. Then again, few opponents have done that this season. The NHL scoring leader matched his career high with his 38th goal, Torey Krug scored twice and the Bruins had three power-play goals in the second period to surge past the Minnesota Wild 6-1 Saturday night. "Just trying to help my team. That's the way I help the most, so hopefully I can keep going," Pastrnak said. Brad Marchand had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who stayed strong out of their brief hiatus and improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Jaroslav Halak had 25 saves, holding the shutout until 5:29 was left on a shot by Mats Zuccarello. Then the Bruins tacked on two more goals after that, by Anders Bjork and Jake DeBrusk. Pastrnak, who also had two assists, broke a tie on the league leader board with Washington's Alex Ovechkin. After tallying 35 goals in 82 games in 2017-18 and 38 goals in just 66 games in 2018-19, the 23-year-old right wing from the Czech Republic reached 38 goals in his 53rd game this season. "He's not being selfish doing it. That's where we'll draw the line, if he's cheating behind everybody or making high-risk plays, and he's not," coach Bruce Cassidy said. David Krejci added two assists, one of five players with multiple points against goalie Devan Dubnyk. The Bruins converted all three of their man-advantage situations after scoring on two of four in a 2-1 win at Winnipeg on Friday night. They're second in the NHL on the power play at 27.3 percent, and they put on a clinic against the Wild. In their last four games before the break, the Bruins had an 0-for-15 slide. Krug, who used some slick stick work to finish a drop pass from Par Lindholm midway through the opening frame, scored again early in the second period off a setup by Marchand. The initial shot glanced off Dubnyk's outside shoulder, hit the post and went off Dubnyk's back to bounce in. Just 76 seconds later, after a second straight interference penalty on the Wild, Marchand's one-timer put the Bruins up 3-0. Then with 4:31 remaining before the second intermission, DeBrusk distracted Dubnyk during a save attempt, and the ever-dangerous Pastrnak, who was parked just outside a crowd around the crease, snagged the loose puck and snapped it in for the 4-0 lead. Pastrnak is on full-season pace for 59 goals. "He's such a happy kid. He loves the game," Krug said. "If he were able to do it, I think there'd be a lot of happy guys in this room." There wasn't much happiness down the hallway. "One of the keys to the game was no lazy penalties," Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said. "If you're not going to compete, you're going to get penalties, and we didn't compete hard enough. They won every battle. They won every race to the puck." The Bruins kept up their push for the Presidents' Trophy, now trailing the Capitals for the Eastern Conference lead by just one point with one more game played. Having revamped their roster last month by dumping veterans David Backes and Brett Ritchie, the Bruins could not have been happier about the way they skated out of the break. And Halak, whose steady goaltending has allowed for more rest for the stellar Tuuka Rask, delivered another winner. The Wild looked rusty out of their eight-day break for the All-Star Game and their bye week, starting their final push for a spot in the playoffs in precisely the wrong way. They began the day six points out of the second wild card with games in hand on most of the teams in front of them, but they're in 12th place in the Western Conference with only 31 games to go. With a few more performances like these, general manager Bill Guerin could be prompted to sell before the trade deadline on Feb. 24. "He's been frank with us that he's going to wait as long as he can," Wild defenseman Matt Dumba said, "but we've got to play better and we've got to show him that this is the group." The Wild have the worst penalty kill in the NHL over the last two months, with a 65.3 percent denial rate since Dec. 1, allowing goals on 26 of 75 short-handed situations. "If I start talking about it I'm going to start using names. I'm not going to talk about it," Boudreau said. "It's just obviously as bad as you can possibly get in this league." NOTES — Dumba, who wears No. 24 like the late Kobe Bryant did in the NBA, honored one of his favorite childhood athletes during warmups by wearing "Bryant" on his jersey. ... Krug had his fifth multigoal game in 507 career games. ... Wild center Ryan Donato, who was acquired last year in a trade with the Bruins for center Charlie Coyle, was scratched for the second straight game. ... From Arsenal outcast to Arteta's linchpin - Xhaka's remarkable road to redemption - Goal.com Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:48 AM PST It's been just over three months since Granit Xhaka seemingly sounded the death knell on his Arsenal career. As he trudged off the pitch at the Emirates Stadium with 29 minutes remaining of the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on October 27, the midfielder reached boiling point. With the boos from the home crowd ringing in his ears and having slung his captain's armband in the direction of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the much maligned Xhaka snapped. Up went the arms and then came the moment that most thought there would be no way back from. "F**k off' he clearly shouted to his own fans, who were by this point incensed. When he finally reached the touchline, Xhaka peeled off his shirt and and headed straight down the tunnel - with many believing it would be the last time we saw the Switzerland international in north London. Xhaka remained silent in the days that followed - despite increasing pressure to say sorry - and when he finally did break his silence, his post on social media was more of an explanation than an apology. "The scenes that took place around my substitution have moved me deeply," he said. "I love this club and always give 100 per cent on and off the pitch. "My feeling of not being understood by fans, and repeated abusive comments at matches and on social media over the last weeks and months have hurt me deeply. "People have said things like 'We will break your legs', 'Kill your wife' and 'Wish that your daughter gets cancer'. "That has stirred me up and I reached boiling point when I felt the rejection in the stadium. "In this situation, I let myself be carried away and reacted in a way that disrespected the group of fans that support our club, our team and myself with positive energy. That has not been my intention and I'm sorry if that's what people thought." Just a week later, Unai Emery confirmed Xhaka had been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy; he also admitted that he was unsure whether the midfielder would play for the club again, with Hertha Berlin keen to take him back to Germany. But now, just three months later and as Arsenal prepare to face Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon, Xhaka is at the heart of things once again. The final weeks of the Januray transfer window passed without even a hint of a departure. The 27-year-old is back in the side and one of the first names on the team sheet under new head coach Mikel Arteta. He's even donned the captain's armband again, albeit only for the final few seconds of the draw at Crystal Palace when Alexandre Lacazette threw it his way as he was being substituted. It's been a remarkable turnaround for Xhaka, one that few could have foreseen in the aftermath of that poisonous afternoon. The role Arteta has played in it deserves great credit. For an inexperienced coach, the way he has handled such a tricky situation has been exemplary. From almost the first day he arrived, he spoke of his desire to keep the midfielder. "When I was going from Arsenal to [Manchester] City to start coaching and we were looking in that position, he was one of the players on my list," Arteta said ahead of his first game in charge against Bournemouth on Boxing Day. "This is how much I liked him. I was happy when Arsenal signed him because I thought he was going to be a terrific player. "He has got stuck in a very difficult situation that, I think, was growing and growing and growing and one day it exploded. "Obviously it is difficult to change completely the scenario from where he was to a magnificent one. But I think we are in the right direction with him." Public words of support like that will not have gone unnoticed with Xhaka. He is a complex character, one who holds very strong beliefs and in the immediate aftermath of the incident against Crystal Palace he felt he had been wronged, not just by the fans but by the way Emery had treated him. At that time he wanted to go and he would have if Emery had stayed. But in Arteta he suddenly had a coach who was supporting him publicly and that was doing everything he could to make him stay in north London. "The way we want to play, if we get him on board he can be a tremendous player for the football club," said Arteta, while discussing Xhaka after the victory over Manchester United on New Year's Day. "I like the way he is, the way he lives, his professionalism, and the way he trains. Every time I am talking, he is listening and willing to learn and he is a great football player. "The way we want to play, there are not as many with his quality on the ball and the way he eliminates passes, and the range of his pass. I am delighted to have him." Since Arteta was appointed, Xhaka has started every game barring the home defeat by Chelsea, which he missed due to illness, and has enjoyed his best run of form for a long time. Operating closely alongside Lucas Torreira, the pair have given Arsenal's back four the protection it was missing under Emery when Torreira was inexplicably used in a more advanced role and Xhaka was often left totally isolated. Defensively, Arsenal are much improved and Xhaka has been central to that improvement, often dropping back alongside the centre-backs to make a back three when the left-back bombs forward to support the attack. Xhaka even filled in as a makeshift centre-back himself for more than an hour at Chelsea after David Luiz's sending off, producing an excellent display next to Shkodran Mustafi as Arsenal snatched a 2-2 draw thanks to Hector Bellerin's late equaliser. The scenes that followed Bellerin's dramatic late strike at Stamford Bridge told their own story. Xhaka didn't just celebrate the goal with his team-mates, he celebrated it with the away fans. It felt like an incredibly important moment for Xhaka. Just three months earlier he was an outcast, now he was leading the celebrations with 3,000 supporters who had made the short journey across the capital. What happened at the Emirates back in October may not have been forgotten, but Xhaka's road to redemption at Arsenal is certainly well underway. Next stop, Burnley. ‘Saturday Night Live’ Holds Impeachment Trial With Alec Baldwin “Trying A Weinstein” - Deadline Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:51 AM PST 'Saturday Night Live' Holds Impeachment Trial With Alec Baldwin "Trying A Weinstein" - Deadline UPDATED with video: Senate Republicans rejected witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, so Saturday Night Live held its own version of the proceedings. In this weekend's cold open, the NBC sketch comedy series put together what it called "the trial you wish had happened." While Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts presided over the real trial, he got the boot on SNL's version and was replaced by Judge Mathis. "We 'bout to do this trial right!" declared Kenan Thompson as the fast-talking TV judge. Thompson quickly cast aside "sneaky little" Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, played by Beck Bennett, and demanded to hear from Trump's defense. Enter GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, played by Kate McKinnon, who was described as "living his best life." Related Story'SNL' Lets Go On 'Frozen 2': Elsa Comes Out, Olaf Sports Extra Carrot"Now I may be a simple country simpleton, but I have studied this from top to bottom," McKinnon said. Moments later, McKinnon's Graham admitted that wasn't exactly true. "No I studied my chances of getting reelected and it ain't gonna happen unless I kiss Mr. Trump's grits and tickle his biscuits and that's why I declare Mr. Trump's innocence," she said. Thompson's Mathis quickly lost patience with the cast of characters in the Senate and demanded to hear from the president himself. That was the cue for Alec Baldwin's return. Instead of walking in with Trump's usual confidence, Baldwin arrived pushing a walker with tennis balls on the bottom, a la Harvey Weinstein. "Your honor, I'm a very sick man. How could I withhold aid from the Ukraine," Baldwin insisted. "I can barely get around the house." Thompson demanded answers. "President Trump are you trying to Weinstein me right now?" he asked. "In which sense, because Harvey and I overlap in a few areas," Baldwin said to laughter. He then stated his case: "My defense is very simple your honor. I'm guilty, but it ain't no thang," Baldwin said with a touch of street flair. Thompson eventually ruled Baldwin's Trump was guilty. The reaction in the Senate? Everyone broke into song and belted out "Send in the Clowns." Houston Texans defensive end J.J. But it turns out Super Bowl Sunday is special to the star for another reason: she's celebrating her 43rd birthday. Shakira has spent the past few months counting down for Super Bowl LIV, which takes place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. It was first announced that the mother of two and JLo would headline the show back in September. SHAKIRA SHOWS OFF HER ABS IN HOT PINK BIKINI SHE DESIGNED "We are so excited to announce that global superstars Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will take the stage together for the very first time at the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show. We've been working closely behind-the-scenes with our longstanding partners at the NFL, and now alongside Roc Nation to bring these mega superstars together. It is a testament to our partnership and commitment to push the envelope of what is possible," Adam Harter, senior vice president of sports, media and entertainment at PepsiCo said in a statement. Shakira shared her excitement in her own post to Instagram. "It doesn't get any bigger than this! So excited about getting on that #SuperBowlLIV #PepsiHalftime stage! 🤩🔥 @jlo #nosvemosMiami #happybirthdaytomeee," she captioned the post. The 43-year-old has been working hard to prepare for Sunday. On Wednesday, Shakira shared a video with her dancers, who excitedly announced they only had "four days to go." The singer has also shared behind-the-scenes clips of her lifting weights and doing squats in the gym. "Getting ready for Super Bowl at the Miami Dolphins' Baptist Health Training Facility," she captioned a video posted earlier this week. The Colombian singer and dancer revealed in October that Jay-Z personally called her to extend the offer of performing with Lopez on NFL's biggest night, which his management company Roc Nation is producing. "He called me and he asked me if I wanted to be a part of that. And, of course, I didn't hesitate," she said. "I said, 'Of course, count on me.' Sundance Film Festival 2020 Award Winners: ‘Minari’ Takes Grand Jury Prize - IndieWire Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:51 AM PST Sundance Film Festival 2020 Award Winners: 'Minari' Takes Grand Jury Prize - IndieWire ![]() The 2020 Sundance Film Festival is coming to a close in Park City, and that means that this year's award winners have been announced. The awards spotlight standout films across the festival's various categories, including U.S. films spanning fiction and documentary, as well as foreign-made films, and NEXT and Midnight selections. This year's fest brought a bounty of riches that are continuing to attract buyers, including high-profile pickups from Neon and Hulu ("Palm Springs"), Sony Pictures Classics ("I Carry You With Me," "Charm City Kids"), Searchlight Pictures ("The Night House"), and more. The 2020 Sundance Film Festival broke a number of records, from diversity in its programming to sales. Culled from 15,000 submissions, the 2020 edition offered up a range of timely, boundary-pushing documentary and narrative storytelling, promising new voices and satisfying new heights from established filmmakers. (Check out IndieWire's roundup of the best 15 films out of Sundance here.) Netflix, which owned this year's Academy Awards nominations, is the distributor that came to the festival with the most titles, including the high-profile Taylor Swift documentary "Miss Americana" from director Lana Wilson as well as Sundance regular Dee Rees' latest effort, the Anne Hathaway-starring Joan Didion adaptation "The Last Thing He Wanted" (which was unfortunately excoriated by critics). Still, there are plenty of other buzzed-about titles up for grabs to the highest bidder from across Sundance's sections, like "Shirley," a psychodrama from "Madeline's Madeline" director Josephine Decker starring Elisabeth Moss and Michael Stuhlbarg as author Shirley Jackson and her husband. Meanwhile, Miranda July debuted her first film in nearly a decade, "Kajillionaire," currently in final talks for distribution from A24. Hulu has set its sights on Justin Simien's '80s-set horror satire "Bad Hair." Elsewhere, the festival's most controversial title, Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering's "On the Record," focused on a former music executive's accusations of sexual assault against Russell Simmons, and it's still on the prowl for a buyer after former executive producer Oprah Winfrey backed out of the project, which was set for release on Apple TV+. That distribution deal is no longer. Sundance 2020 winners are listed below. Alfred P. Quieter Response to Coronavirus in Countries Where China Holds Sway - The New York Times Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:24 AM PST ![]() BANGKOK — In Myanmar, loudspeakers broadcast advice from Buddhist monks: Seven ground peppercorns, exactly seven, placed on the tongue will ward off the coronavirus spreading across Asia and the world. In Indonesia, Terawan Agus Putranto, the health minister, advised citizens to relax and eschew overtime work to avoid the disease, which has killed more than 300 people and infected more than 14,000 others, mostly in China. "To prevent it is very easy as long as your immunity is good," Mr. Terawan said. And in Cambodia, Prime Minister Hun Sen told a packed news conference on Thursday that he would kick out anyone who was wearing a surgical mask because such measures were creating an unwarranted climate of fear. "The prime minister doesn't wear a mask," he said, "so why do you?" The World Health Organization has declared the epidemic, which appears to have originated in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, a global health emergency. But the message does not seem to be resonating in some parts of Southeast Asia, a magnet for Chinese tourists and workers. The region now has the largest cluster of coronavirus patients outside China. Some governments there have either played down the threat of the epidemic or openly worried about offending a superpower whose economic heft can propel their economies. Medical experts worry that a delayed response could hasten the spread of the disease. "Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.'s director general. On Sunday, the first overseas death from the virus, of a 44-year-old Wuhan resident who had died a day earlier, was reported in the Philippines. The virus has spread to about two dozen countries. Hours before the death was announced, President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines ordered a temporary entry ban on most travelers who had recently been in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Earlier in the week, Mr. Duterte, who has brought the Philippines closer to China while distancing it from the United States, said there was no reason to bar visitors from mainland China, bringing a barrage of criticism from local medical experts. "We are not as prepared as first-world countries," said Anthony Leachon, a Philippine health advocate who had urged a temporary entry ban, even if it risked riling Beijing. "Countries should break protocols to save their people." With 19 confirmed cases, Thailand has the second-largest number of cases outside China, followed by Singapore, with 18. Thailand announced on Friday that a Thai taxi driver had tested positive for coronavirus, most likely after coming into contact with a Chinese traveler. Yet even as the threat of human-to-human transmission grows, the country's health officials have counseled against undue concern. One of the confirmed cases in Thailand involved a Chinese man in the northern city of Chiang Mai who initially tested negative for the virus after being admitted to a hospital and was therefore transferred out of an isolation unit to a general ward, said Rungrueng Kitphati, a spokesman for the country's health ministry. "The chances of him spreading the disease is very low," said Mr. Rungrueng, noting that the space between beds in the general ward was more than a yard. "Our medical staff always wash their hands in and out. It will not be communicable to others." Yet in Wuhan, the coronavirus has infected medical workers, including a doctor who had raised the alarm about the mysterious virus in December, only to have the local government berate him for "illegal behavior." As the virus has spread across the region, some governments have remained in denial. At one hospital in Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, a slide show during a presentation on preventing the spread of coronavirus said: "Don't be so afraid of the coronavirus. It won't last long because 'made in China.'" "Health is not a joke, and the virus is not a joke either," said Aung Aung, a surgeon at Mandalay General Hospital. "I don't think Myanmar has the modern techniques to know whether the virus is here." On Friday, Myanmar announced its first suspected case, involving a Chinese man who had arrived by plane from Guangzhou. Myanmar does not have the capacity to test for this specific coronavirus, said U Zaw Htay, a government spokesman. Any samples will need to be sent to Thailand or Hong Kong, which could take up to a week. Even high-level officials have been trading in folk remedies. After a Facebook user in Myanmar wrote a widely read tribute to onions as a way to prevent transmission of the coronavirus, the chief minister of Tanintharyi Division, U Myint Mg, shared the post on his Facebook page. "The Chinese government has announced that people should consume and have on hand as many onions as they can," the post read, with no basis in fact. Cambodia has only one confirmed case of the deadly virus, involving a Chinese national in the boomtown of Sihanoukville, which has been remade by an influx of tens of thousands of Chinese workers. About 3,000 travelers from Wuhan have flown to Cambodia since the epidemic was announced last month, according to Cambodian civil aviation authorities. In a country with limited media freedoms, some Cambodians worry that the full scope of the virus's potential impact is not being reported for political reasons. The country's health minister suggested that Cambodia's hot and humid climate could ward off the coronavirus. And China has been pressuring countries not to ban its travelers, with a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman calling an entry ban enacted by the United States "not in keeping with the facts" and not "in keeping with friendship." Mr. Hun Sen, the prime minister, who has tethered his country close to China, has said he will not ban flights from China. Nor will he organize an effort to evacuate Cambodians from Wuhan, as other nations have done, he said, because they "have to continue staying there and joining with Chinese to fight this disease." "Is there any Cambodian or foreigner in Cambodia who has died of the disease?" the prime minister asked. "The real disease happening in Cambodia right now is the disease of fear. It is not the coronavirus that occurs in China's Wuhan city." Indonesia, where direct flights from Wuhan brought tourists to the holiday island of Bali, has not confirmed any cases of coronavirus, leading to concerns about lax monitoring of incoming passengers. The virus has been found in Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, three much less populous countries around Indonesia. Laos, a secretive socialist nation on the border with China, has also not confirmed any cases, even though a large number of Chinese tourists and workers cycle through the country. On Saturday, residents of the remote Natuna islands in Indonesia, on the southern shores of the South China Sea, gathered by the hundreds to protest a decision to quarantine about 240 Indonesians airlifted there from Wuhan. "People are upset," said Andes Putra, the head of Natuna's Parliament, noting that local officials had been given scant information about the virus. Like other countries in Southeast Asia, Indonesia depends heavily on Chinese tourism. On Thursday alone, 10,000 Chinese tourists canceled their trips to Bali, according to one industry association. But on Sunday, Indonesia said it was temporarily barring visitors from mainland China who had been there for 14 days. Mr. Terawan, the health minister, has suggested that the coronavirus will not affect people who exercise properly and sleep amply. "Don't fret," he said. "Just enjoy and eat enough." In Thailand, where normally bustling airports have been emptied of holidaymakers and tourism officials say that arrivals from China could drop by 80 percent in the first four months of this year, Anutin Charnvirakul, the public health minister, recommended temporarily revoking the country's visa-on-arrival program for mainland Chinese travelers. But more than 180,000 Chinese tourists who had entered Thailand over the past two months remain in the country, according to immigration officials. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha of Thailand called for Mr. Anutin to check in with tourism officials before submitting a formal proposal to the cabinet, a process that could take days. Reporting was contributed by Muktita Suhartono from Jakarta, Indonesia, Jason Gutierrez from Manila, Sun Narin from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Saw Nang from Mandalay, Myanmar.
