Actress Sydney Sweeney returns home to Spokane for fan visit at middle school - The Spokesman-Review Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:21 AM PST ![]() Actress Sydney Sweeney was nervous Monday morning. She wasn't headed down a red carpet, into a big audition, or performing in front of icons like Leonardo DiCaprio or Brad Pitt. She's done all of that, recently. Instead, she was about to face 30 students at Mountainside Middle School in north Spokane. Sweeney came back to her home town to speak to an eighth-grade class about the importance of education and to answer all their burning questions about her life on the big screen. At 22 years old, Sweeney has starred in the some of the most popular recent TV shows and movies. She played Cassie Howard in HBO's "Euphoria," a wildly popular teen drama that garnered 5.6 million viewers last season, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Sweeney also played Snake in "Once Upon A Time in … Hollywood," and Eden Spencer in "The Handmaid's Tale." Those roles have boosted her celebrity status and garnered her more than a million followers on Instagram. The actress was born in Spokane and lived on the South Hill much of her childhood. She attended Saint George's private school in north Spokane through much of middle school before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. "I always wanted to be an actress," Sweeney said. "I have a crazy, crazy imagination." She auditioned for a local indie film and was hooked on acting. So, the family decided it was time to pursue acting more seriously. At 12, Sweeney went to Los Angeles with her mom, Lisa Sweeney, to audition during pilot season, where casting directors and producers book roles for upcoming TV pilots. Not long after those first auditions, Sweeney and her mom moved to L.A.. She booked small parts on shows like "Criminal Minds" and "90210." She worked consistently in recurring TV roles and on indie films. "I built a lot of relationships and experience from those sets," Sweeney said. When Sweeney was 19, she booked a role on HBO's "Sharp Objects" and "Everything Sucks!" on Netflix. Since then she's been working nonstop. One of the biggest changes that has come with her fame, is being called a role model. "I had a little girl write me a letter and ask me to speak at her school and now I'm here," Sweeney said. "She said I'm a role model." That little girl was Grace Merrel, 13, who wrote to Sweeney as part of an assignment in teacher Drew Piper's elective class, where students wrote letters to people they look up to in the career they want to pursue. Merrel was looking up her favorite shows to write to an actress and saw that Sweeney was in "Everything Sucks!" Merrel said she wrote to Sweeney and "poured out her heart." Sweeney not only replied to Merrel's letter, but said she would come speak at her school. Merrel was overwhelmed. "I wanted to cry. I was so happy," Merrel said. "I've been nervous the whole day." Sweeney chimed in: "I've been nervous, too." Part of those nerves came from Sweeney having to talk about herself, she said. "I have horrible stage fright, which is so funny," Sweeney said. "I get more nervous having to be myself than the character because when you're a character you kind of let go of everything." While most of the character's Sweeney plays aren't appropriate for middle-schoolers, she said she hoped parents and young children could see the separation between Sweeney and her characters when it comes to being a role model for their children. "I know it might be hard for some parents because of the roles I do take on," Sweeney said. "I think that I can show them that education is important no matter what you do, that coming home and visiting your family when you can is important and staying humble is a good thing to be." Sweeney stressed the role that education plays in all aspects of becoming an adult not just your professional life but in balancing responsibility. "I missed a lot of school because of work but I had the grades to keep up school," Sweeney said. "It taught me how to balance work and homework and life and a social life." When she was about 15, she took an exam to exempt her from having to complete required school hours, have a teacher on set, and allowing her to work longer days. A lot of her peers, who also took the exemption exam, didn't finish high school, Sweeney explained, but her mother was adamant that Sweeney have a good education. "In the last couple months, somebody that we know that went the other route of quitting now wishes that they would have stayed in school," Lisa Sweeney said. Sweeney graduated from high school with straight As and was named valedictorian. She even attended college to study business before having to take time off last year to film "Euphoria." Many of the students asked about Sweeney's goals for the future, which include starting a production company, directing and writing. With Sweeney's busy schedule, she doesn't get back to Spokane as often as she would like but tries to visit in the winter to ski and in the summer to spend time at her family's lake house. "We dust her bedroom," Lisa Sweeney joked. But she firmly insisted her daughter is still a Spokane girl at heart. "I like coming to Spokane because it's just my family and no one is really like, 'Oh my god, it's Sydney,'" Sweeney said. "I can wear sweats and sweatshirts all the time." Jovic: I watch videos of myself from a year ago and think 'what's gone wrong?' - Goal.com Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:48 PM PST ![]() Luka Jovic has opened up on his disappointing form with Real Madrid this season, stating: "Sometimes I watch videos of my games last year and I think: 'What's gone wrong?'" Speaking to Sports Afternoon with Kristina, the former Eintracht Frankfurt forward has talked about the contrast between his goalscoring record last term, when he netted 27 times in 48 appearances, and his recent struggles. Since moving to Spain in the summer, he has only one goal to his name. That came courtesy of a header late in injury time against Leganes in La Liga, the fifth goal in a 5-0 win. Jovic has also tallied one assist in the league but, along with fellow new arrival Eden Hazard, he will have hoped for a much faster start with Zinedine Zidane's side. "Honestly, I'm not happy with the season because I know I can improve," he said. "Sometimes I watch videos of my games last year and I think: 'What's gone wrong?' "But we all know that Real Madrid is a huge club and difficult even for experienced players to get used to. Even more so for a 21-year-old they have paid €60 million for. "The pressure is massive, I'm battling at the moment without success. But I hope the situation changes." Despite Jovic's difficulties, Los Blancos are currently three points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga. They have been beaten only once in the league – a 1-0 defeat to Mallorca back in October – and they are still in contention for the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, where they face Manchester City later this month. Lacklustre start aside, Jovic feels that he has what it takes to turn things around at the Santiago Bernabeu. "In my country [Serbia], I still feel that there is a negative undercurrent when talking about my game at Real Madrid," he said. "But I am convinced that I will do well and that I will show that I am at Real Madrid because I have the quality [to be here]." Zidane, meanwhile, has also backed Jovic to make a success of his time with Los Blancos . "He is the future," his manager said last month. "He has to be calm. He is learning. "He's a boy who wants to learn a lot. He's very good. He'll get a lot of goals. We've backed him and you have to be calm with him." A Definitive Guide to Mobile SEO - Search Engine Journal Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:38 PM PST 3. Technical Aspects of Mobile SEONow let's look at the technical aspects of mobile SEO. When you optimize the SEO elements on a page, you should start with title tags, H1 headings, content, image alt text, URLs, and meta descriptions, just as you would doing standard SEO on your desktop site. Pay special attention to your title tags and meta descriptions. Mobile search results pages don't display as much information as desktop SERPs, so your titles and descriptions will be truncated to a much shorter length. Use those marketing skills to write shorter, more compelling titles and descriptions, so you'll make a better impression when you show up in mobile searches. It's critical that you don't block CSS or JavaScript. Older devices didn't support CSS or JavaScript, so it was common practice to block them – less code ensured faster load speeds. Now, Google's spiders want to crawl your site as humans see it. And if CSS and JavaScript are blocked, Google can't see what your page actually looks like, so you might experience visibility problems. Make sure you don't have any popups on your mobile site – they're incredibly annoying. Think about what you do when you're browsing the web. When you get to a site and a giant popup appears, you get frustrated and close it immediately. Your customers do the same thing. ![]() Make sure you're using schema markup. You should be using schema anyway, but it's even more important when you consider the size of mobile screens. And if you manage to get a rich snippet in search results, you're even more likely to stand out when people are searching for you. And finally, never, ever use Flash on your website! If you want your site to have animations or special effects, use HTML5 instead. 4. User ExperienceIt's more convenient to search on a mobile device, but because of that convenience factor, user experience is critical to success. So let's talk about the things you should optimize to make your user experience stellar. One of the most important UX issues on mobile sites is click size. Whether it's a menu button or a clickable element, you need to make sure the clickable area is large enough for finger taps. Along the same line, pay attention to the distance between clicks. If your clickable areas are too close together, users will get frustrated when they can't click what they're trying to click. Frustrated users are bad for business – they're probably going to bounce. Make sure your phone number is easy to see and is coded with a click to call link. Far too often, we see sites with unclickable phone numbers. Why do you have your number on your site? Because you want customers to call you! So make things easy for them – add the click to call link. ![]() Make sure your mobile menu is easy to navigate. If you've crammed a bunch of buttons into your menu, they'll stack vertically on mobile, and might not fit on the screen – users will have to scroll to see them all. If it's too hard for users to find what they're looking for, they're going to bounce and find the answer or the product elsewhere. Another massive mobile UX headache is forms. Most business owners and marketers don't put much thought into their mobile forms, thinking that the responsive site solves everything. The forms need to fit well on the screen, and they need to be easy to use. If the fields are too small, it's tough to click them to select them. But the biggest issue of all is the keyboard you use for your forms. There are several mobile keyboards available, and it's important to connect the right keyboard to each field. If a user needs to type in their name, you're cool with the standard keyboard. When the user needs to type in a phone number, set that field to pull up the number keypad instead of the standard keyboard. It's a simple code change that will drastically influence the number of form completions you'll see on mobile. Font size is also important. Pull up your site on your phone – is it easy to read? Is there enough space between lines? Don't try to use a smaller font to squeeze in more content on the smaller screen – in fact, you most likely need to do the opposite. Make it easy to read and your users will be happy. Make sure you're serving different image sizes on mobile. A full-screen image on a desktop is much larger than a full-screen image on a mobile device, so use your website code to serve up different images based on screen size. Don't load in huge images that you don't need to. If you've got a slideshow, serve mobile-specific images for it, making sure they fit on the screen of a mobile device. 5. Mobile Site SpeedPage load speed is a Google ranking factor – and since it's using a mobile-first algorithm, we know that mobile load speed is what matters. It's important, but note that your page load speed is really only going to affect your rankings if you're in the bottom range. The extremely slow sites get penalized – but once you've got a site that's loading within a few seconds, shaving another half second off your load time isn't going to help you rank any better. It will help you convert more customers, though. When you're browsing sites on your phone, there's nothing worse than going to a site that loads so slowly you feel like you're going to die. If that's the case, your users will bounce and go to your competitors instead. Most business owners and marketers have heard of Google's Page Speed Insights tool. It shares incredibly valuable insights into how you can speed up your site, but it doesn't really tell you how long your site takes to load. Use it for the suggestions it provides, but opt for another speed testing tool to tell you the actual load time. Now, we're going to share eight tips that will help your site to truly rock in terms of page load speed. ![]()
6. AMP & AppsWe can't talk about mobile page speed without mentioning AMP and PWAs, which are two alternative options for providing faster-loading content for your users. AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages, which are created with a special coding language that is based on a stripped-down version of HTML and CSS and loads almost instantly. AMP tends to be mainly for news sites and wouldn't make much sense for many businesses, as those pages don't look as appealing as fully designed pages. Even worse, the AMP pages are stored on Google servers, and you get limited analytics data. If you're looking for a fast, streamlined user experience, apps are another option. Native apps allow you to do things that aren't possible on a website. There's a bit of a barrier to entry, though – there's no point in having an app if your customers and potential customers don't download it. You've also got to get the app approved by the App Store or Google Play. A progressive web app, or PWA, gives you the best of both worlds. A PWA is a hybrid between a mobile website and an app. You can download it directly from your browser without going to the App Store (or worrying about App Store approval). It looks like an app on the user's phone, but functions basically like a mobile website. PWAs are incredibly fast. Thanks to data caching, once the PWA has been used one time, users can load and use the app without even being on a network. It can even send push notifications and access other functions on the device – just like native apps. There's even a newer hybrid combo of PWAs and AMP, commonly called PWAMP, which are progressive web apps built on AMP pages. So, should you use one or the other, or any of the options at all? Each business is different, so there's no right or wrong answer. It also depends on your customers and audience, on how users find you, and on how they engage with you once you've been found. 7. Optimizing for LocalLet's finish up with talking about how to optimize your site for local. Mobile searches are inherently local. Google knows you're searching from a mobile device, and if that search has anything to do with local businesses, it's going to show localized results. ![]() A Google study showed that 76% of users who searched for something nearby visited a related business within 24 hours of searching. Even better, 28% of those visits resulted in a sale. If you haven't heard of it before, Local SEO is going to be your new best friend. You need to be sure your content is localized – it needs to reference the local area, and you should be including your city name in your content. Don't stuff the city name in, mention it conversationally. It's also helpful to write locally focused blog posts – they allow you to talk about specific information about the local area. You also need to be sure that your NAP information is displayed on every page of your site. NAP stands for name, address, and phone number. Make sure your phone number is click to call. Your NAP information needs to be marked up with Local Business schema – a type of code that shows Google that you're a local business. You should also use local optimization tactics when you're optimizing the important SEO elements on your pages. Include your location keyword phrase in your title tag, in your H1, and in your image alt text. Don't just add it to the end – try to make it conversational. Most website platforms allow you to customize your URLs, so include your location keywords in your URLs wherever possible. Finally, include your location keyword in your meta description. It won't help you with ranking, but since it appears under your blue link when you show up as a search result, it's helpful to include the location info to boost the likelihood of a clickthrough. You'll also want to shift your link building strategy and start targeting links from local businesses. Google's local algorithm values links from local businesses, even if the authority metrics are lower than what you're used to seeing. You'll need to be sure your Google My Business profile is claimed and fully optimized. It's a direct interface with Google that allows you to supply specific details about your business, and it's the first thing customers will see when searching for your business. Reviews play a big part in the local algorithm as well, so if you haven't been paying attention to reputation management, it's time to start working on getting more reviews. Citations are also important to the local algorithm. Citations are mentions of your NAP information on other websites. Basically, they're your directory listings. They're a foundational Local SEO signal, and Google expects to see the same NAP listed every time it sees your information on another site. Want to learn more about mobile SEO? Iowa official slams viral claim of suspicious voter registration activity as false - National Post Posted: 03 Feb 2020 10:20 PM PST A viral claim by a conservative activist group that voter registration numbers in Iowa are suspiciously large ahead of the first U.S. presidential nominating contest on Monday is false, a senior state government official said, and called on the group to end its "misinformation campaign." Iowa's Secretary of State Paul Pate, a Republican, said the claim by Washington D.C.-based group Judicial Watch that total registration numbers for caucuses in eight Iowa counties were larger than the eligible voter population had been disproven by official data. "It's unfortunate this organization continues to put out inaccurate data regarding voter registration, and it's especially disconcerting they chose the day of the Iowa Caucus to do this," Pate said in a news release posted on Twitter, criticizing their data as flawed. "They should stop this misinformation campaign immediately." Democrats start their hunt for a challenger to President Donald Trump in the November general election at the Iowa caucuses. Judicial Watch's Facebook post on Monday garnered 10,000 shares and, on Twitter, a tweet on Sunday from conservative student group Turning Point USA's president Charlie Kirk sharing the same information has been retweeted more than 40,000 times. Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton called Pate's denial of its claim "shameful." "It is shameful that the secretary state of Iowa would mislead Iowans and Americans about the accuracy of the state's registration rolls," he said in a tweet. Turning Point did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Social media companies are under pressure to police misinformation ahead of the November 2020 election after U.S. intelligence officials said that Russia used the sites as part of a cyber-influence campaign aimed at interfering in the 2016 presidential election – a claim that Moscow has denied. "We're seeing a recent uptick in activity spreading false info about widespread voter fraud," David Becker, the executive director of the Center for Election Innovation & Research, said on Twitter. "Again, the data on this is clear and conclusive – voter fraud is extremely rare." A Facebook spokesman told Reuters that Judicial Watch's post did not violate its voter suppression policies because it did not make misrepresentations about how to vote or whether a vote would be counted. The company later said that its third-party fact-checking partners had determined the post to be false, meaning a "false information" label would be placed on it whenever it is shared on Facebook. A Twitter spokesman also said tweets from Kirk and Judicial Watch did not violate its election integrity policy. Twitter's policy says that users are not allowed to post or share "false or misleading information intended to intimidate or dissuade voters from participating in an election." Last week the company announced it was turning on a tool to enable people to report misleading information. This Chinese doctor tried to save lives, but was silenced. Now he has coronavirus - CNN Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:59 PM PST Li explained that, according to a test he had seen, the illness was a coronavirus -- a large family of viruses that includes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Memories of SARS run deep in China, where a pandemic in 2003 killed hundreds following a government cover up. "I only wanted to remind my university classmates to be careful," he said. Li, a 34-year-old doctor working in Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the epicenter of the deadly coronavirus outbreak, told his friends to warn their loved ones privately. But within hours screenshots of his messages had gone viral -- without his name being blurred. "When I saw them circulating online, I realized that it was out of my control and I would probably be punished," Li said. He was right. Soon after he posted the message, Li was accused of rumor-mongering by the Wuhan police. He was one of several medics targeted by police for trying to blow the whistle on the deadly virus in the early weeks of the outbreak. The virus has since claimed at least 425 lives and sickened more than 20,000 people globally -- including Li. From an intensive care bed in hospital, Li told CNN he was confirmed Saturday to have contracted the virus. His diagnosis has sparked outrage across China, where a backlash is growing against state censorship around the illness and an initial delay in warning the public about the deadly virus. Summoned by the policeOn the same day in December that Li messaged his friends, an emergency notice was issued by the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission, informing the city's medical institutions that a series of patients from the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market had an "unknown pneumonia." The notice came with a warning: "Any organizations or individuals are not allowed to release treatment information to the public without authorization." In the early hours of December 31, Wuhan's health authorities held an emergency meeting to discuss the outbreak. Afterwards, Li was summoned by officials at his hospital to explain how he knew about the cases, according to state-run newspaper Beijing Youth Daily. Later that day, the Wuhan authorities announced the outbreak and alerted the World Health Organization. But Li's troubles did not end there. On January 3, Li was called to a local police station and reprimanded for "spreading rumors online" and "severely disrupting social order" over the message he sent in the chat group. In that message, Li said the patients had been diagnosed with SARS, citing the test result that showed the pathogen tested positive for the SARS virus with a high "confidence coefficient" -- a measure indicating the accuracy of the test. He clarified in a subsequent message that the virus was actually a different type of coronavirus, but the screenshot of his first message had already spread online. Li had to sign a statement -- which CNN has seen a photograph of -- acknowledging his "misdemeanor" and promising not to commit further "unlawful acts." He feared he was going to be detained. "My family would worry sick about me, if I lose my freedom for a few days," he told CNN over a text message on WeChat -- he was coughing too much and breathing too poorly to speak over the phone. Luckily, Li was allowed to leave the police station after an hour. The Wuhan police has not responded to CNN's request for comment at the time of publishing. The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission declined to comment. The ophthalmologist returned to work at Wuhan Central Hospital feeling helpless. He said: "There was nothing I could do. (Everything) has to adhere to the official line." On January 10, after unwittingly treating a patient with the Wuhan coronavirus, Li started coughing and developed a fever the next day. He was hospitalized on January 12. In the following days, Li's condition deteriorated so badly that he was admitted to the intensive care unit, and given oxygen support. On February 1, he tested positive for coronavirus. Playing down the outbreakFrom the start, the Chinese authorities wanted to control information about the outbreak, silencing any voices that differed with their narrative -- regardless of whether they were telling the truth. On January 1, the Wuhan police announced it had "taken legal measures" against eight people who had recently "published and shared rumors online" about the pneumonia-like illness and "caused adverse impacts on society." "The internet is not a land beyond the law ... Any unlawful acts of fabricating, spreading rumors and disturbing the social order will be punished by police according to the law, with zero tolerance," said a police statement on Weibo, China's Twitter-like platform. The police announcement was broadcast across the country on CCTV, China's state broadcaster, making it clear how the Chinese government would treat such "rumormongers." In the two weeks that followed, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission remained the only source for updates on the developments of the outbreak. Chinese scientists identified the pathogen as a new coronavirus on January 7. For about a week, no new confirmed cases were announced. Health authorities maintained there was "no obvious evidence for human to human transmission," no infection of healthcare workers, and that the outbreak was "preventable and controllable." On January 31, Li wrote in a post on Weibo how he felt during that period: "I was wondering why (the government's) official notices were still saying there was no human-to-human transmission, and there were no healthcare workers infected." Then came a sudden jump in infections. Until January 17, the Wuhan authorities had only reported 41 cases of the virus. By January 20, that number had soared to 198. The central government took over and, on January 20, President Xi Jinping ordered "resolute efforts to curb the spread" of the coronavirus and stressed the need for the timely release of information -- it was the first time Xi had publicly addressed the outbreak. Later that evening, Zhong Nanshan, a government-appointed respiratory expert, known for fighting SARS 17 years ago, declared on state broadcaster CCTV that the new coronavirus was transmissible from person to person. Three days later, authorities placed an unprecedented lockdown on Wuhan, the economic engine and transportation hub of China's central heartland -- but five million people had already left the city for the Lunar New Year holiday. Now, the virus has spread to every region in the country, including the far western frontier of Xinjiang and the remote region of Tibet. In an interview with CCTV on January 27, Wuhan mayor Zhou Xianwang admitted his government did not disclose information on the coronavirus "in a timely fashion." He explained that under Chinese law on infectious diseases, the local government first needs to report the outbreak to national health authorities, and then get approval from the State Council before making an announcement. "For the late disclosure, I hope everyone can understand that this is an infectious disease, and relevant information has special channels to be disclosed in accordance with law," he said. Public uproarBy late January, the Wuhan government's mishandling of the outbreak was becoming well-understood in China. Many online thought of the group of eight "rumormongers," saying their early warnings could have saved hundreds of lives. Calls for the eight to be vindicated grew -- even in state media. Xi's call for the timely release of information was seen as a green light to report on the coronavirus and Chinese journalists began producing in-depth coverage and hard-hitting investigative reports. The state-run newspaper Beijing Youth Daily interviewed Li and the article went viral. The piece was censored within hours, but the uproar remained. As public anger mounted, China's Supreme Court on January 28 criticized the Wuhan police for punishing the "rumormongers." "It might have been a fortunate thing for containing the new coronavirus, if the public had listened to this 'rumor' at the time, and adopted measures such as wearing masks, strict disinfection and avoiding going to the wildlife market," the Supreme Court commentary said. Bowing to pressure, the Wuhan police issued a statement the next day, saying the eight people had only committed "particularly minor" misdemeanors for spreading "unverified information." It said they had only been summoned for a talk and not detained or fined. On Saturday, another "rumormonger" came forward with her story in the Chinese press. Xie Linka, an oncologist at Wuhan Union Hospital, told Chinese media she received a warning from police after sending an alert to her colleagues in a WeChat group on the evening of December 30. In the message, Xie relayed a warning from fellow doctors about an infectious disease: "Don't go to Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in the near future. Several people were found to have contracted an unknown pneumonia similar to SARS there. Today our hospital has received multiple patients from the market. Everyone please remember to wear masks and ventilate properly." Now recovering in a quarantine ward, Li said he was not sure if he was one of the eight "rumormongers." But he felt relieved after reading the Supreme Court commentary, taking it as a sign that the central government is against giving him a harsh punishment. On Li's Weibo, tens of thousands have left comments thanking him for speaking out and wishing him a speedy discovery. "Dr Li, you're a good doctor with conscience. I hope you stay safe and sound," read one of the top-rated comments. Others have questioned what could have been if Li's warning had been heeded. "If Wuhan had paid attention to [his warning] back then and taken active preventive measures," wrote another Weibo user, "where we stand now a month later could be a completely different picture." User-Error Problems With Mobile App for Iowa Caucuses Prompt Online Confusion - The New York Times Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:38 PM PST ![]() DES MOINES — Reports of Iowa precinct chairs struggling to use an app designed to help tally participation in the Democratic presidential caucuses on Monday fueled conspiracy theories on social media and raised questions about how smoothly the high-stakes nominating contest would unfold. Just hours before the beginning of the contest, the first of the 2020 elections, the headquarters of the Iowa Democratic Party received multiple calls from precinct chairs around the state reporting problems with the new app the party is using to calculate, tabulate and report results for the caucuses. The state party said nearly all of the calls were related to user-error problems, such as precincts in areas with bad cellphone service having problems downloading or logging into the app, or others simply asking about the app's functionality. Though the issues could possibly cause results to be delayed, the party said that it would not ultimately affect the reporting of results. Sean Bagniewski, the Democratic Party chairman in Polk County, the most populous county in Iowa, said that only 20 percent of his 177 chairs could get into the app, but he added that there were "no malfunctions." "We're telling everyone to phone it in," Mr. Bagniewski said, referring to the hotline the party has used for decades to report results. Yet those issues appeared to trigger speculation on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms that the app had been hacked, or that it was malfunctioning in a way that would benefit a certain candidate. "One of the risks of introducing apps like this, and new technology more generally, into elections, is that problems occur, as they inevitably do," said Matt Blaze, a professor of computer science and law at Georgetown University who studies election security. He added that while the problems could be malicious or just technical glitches, they added fuel to speculation that elections were not secure. "People might see this as evidence that the whole system is rigged and not vote at all. And that is the most tragic outcome." The rapid escalation of rumors and confusion across social media represents an early test for a Democratic Party still grappling with the effects of disinformation in elections as the party enters a critical stage of the 2020 primary race. Though the Democratic National Committee has devoted resources and has hired outside experts to help combat disinformation ahead of the 2020 election, multiple recent elections, including the Kentucky governor's race in November, have been targeted by malicious campaigns. Before the Iowa caucuses, officials at the D.N.C. and outside experts both cited disinformation as the greatest threat to the security of the caucuses. In the months leading up to caucus day, the D.N.C. held biweekly trainings and sessions with state officials on combating disinformation. This week, the national party sent multiple security officials to Iowa to monitor the threat. On Monday, state party officials emphasized that there would be no delays with results because of reported problems with the app. "The I.D.P. is working with any precinct chairs who want to use the optional tabulation application to make sure they are comfortable with it," Mandy McClure, the communications director for the Iowa Democratic Party, said in a statement. "We've always been aware that many precinct chairs prefer to call in results via a secure hotline, and have systems in place so they can do so." Though a mobile app was used in the 2016 caucuses, the state party chose a new vendor and app for 2020 to submit results electronically. For months, the party has been holding in-person training sessions around the state to help precinct chairs get comfortable with the app. But the Iowa Democratic Party, knowing that some of its precinct chairs have been running caucus locations for years based on a pen-and-paper system, kept open other lines for reporting, including the same phone-based hotline that has been used for years. The party also introduced a new preference card system for the caucuses that would create a rough paper trail. The new app was designed to improve the speed and efficiency of reporting election results, and was tested by law enforcement and security officials. But details of the app, including the type of security it uses, its basic structure and even its name, were a closely held secret by Democratic officials, leading to rumors and confusion over how, exactly, the app functioned. "The idea of keeping an app — particularly one that is going to be used by thousands of people at a public event — secret is really a fool's errand," Mr. Blaze said. Serious attackers, Mr. Blaze said, would have no trouble finding or identifying an app that had been deployed to so large a group. Secrecy, he added, only prevented cybersecurity experts and outside parties who could help Democratic officials by scrutinizing the app and offering guidance on how to secure it. Doubts over the app on social media began to surface last week, when news reports revealed that the app had been shared with precincts across Iowa. With little other information to go on, some candidates' supporters began circulating rumors on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms falsely claiming that the app was a ruse to allow the Democratic Party to secretly boost its candidate of choice. Tweets claiming that results from certain districts, or for certain candidates, would be erased from the app were quickly shared, despite being debunked. Democratic officials have struggled to contain other viral claims of voter fraud in the Iowa caucuses. A widely disputed tweet and video by the nonprofit conservative group Judicial Watch claimed that eight Iowa counties had more caucusgoers registered to vote than actual caucusgoers in their districts. The tweet and video were dismissed by Paul Pate, the Iowa secretary of state, who posted a link to the county-by-county voter registration guide. "They are updated monthly and available online for everyone to see," he wrote on Twitter. Facebook said it would not remove the video, but referred it to fact checkers. Neither Twitter nor YouTube responded to a request for comment, but as of Monday evening the video was available on all three social media platforms and had been viewed tens of thousands of times. Social media companies have largely taken the position that they will only remove content that tries to suppress voters, such as by giving a false date or location for voting. On the ground in Iowa, state party officials were using Twitter and other social channels to call attention to potential disinformation and to ask the public for help in identifying it. "Reminder to folks on caucus day: if you see ANY misleading information, we want to know about it," Kevin Geiken, the executive director of the Iowa Democratic Party, wrote on Twitter. "Email disinfo@iowademocrats.org or reply to this thread and we'll investigate ASAP!" Nick Corasaniti reported from Des Moines, and Sheera Frenkel from San Francisco. Iowa official slams viral claim of suspicious voter registration activity as false - Reuters Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:20 PM PST (Reuters) - A viral claim by a conservative activist group that voter registration numbers in Iowa are suspiciously large ahead of the first U.S. presidential nominating contest on Monday is false, a senior state government official said, and called on the group to end its "misinformation campaign." Caucus participants arrive to register in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. February 3, 2020. REUTERS/Brian Snyder Iowa's Secretary of State Paul Pate, a Republican, said the claim by Washington D.C.-based group Judicial Watch that total registration numbers for caucuses in eight Iowa counties were larger than the eligible voter population had been disproven by official data. Social media companies are under pressure to police misinformation ahead of the November 2020 election after U.S. intelligence officials said that Russia used the sites as part of a cyber-influence campaign aimed at interfering in the 2016 presidential election - a claim that Moscow has denied. "We're seeing a recent uptick in activity spreading false info about widespread voter fraud," David Becker, the executive director of the Center for Election Innovation & Research, said on Twitter. "Again, the data on this is clear and conclusive - voter fraud is extremely rare." A Facebook (FB.O) spokesman told Reuters that Judicial Watch's post did not violate its voter suppression policies because it did not make misrepresentations about how to vote or whether a vote would be counted. The company later said that its third-party fact-checking partners had determined the post to be false, meaning a "false information" label would be placed on it whenever it is shared on Facebook. A Twitter (TWTR.N) spokesman also said tweets from Kirk and Judicial Watch did not violate its election integrity policy. Twitter's policy says that users are not allowed to post or share "false or misleading information intended to intimidate or dissuade voters from participating in an election." Last week the company announced it was turning on a tool to enable people to report misleading information. Mobile app errors could delay Iowa Caucus results - The Verge Posted: 03 Feb 2020 06:38 PM PST ![]() Monday's Iowa Caucus results could be delayed after precinct chairs reported trouble accessing a new mobile app used for reporting their final results, according to Bloomberg. There are nearly 1,700 caucus sites, and the chairs of each precinct are able to use a brand new mobile app this year to record the night's final results. But caucus leaders said Monday they were struggling to download and sign in to the new app only hours ahead of the event. The final results could be "delayed by a few hours," Bloomberg reported, but shouldn't affect the outcome of the caucus or the reporting of results. At the end of the event, some caucus volunteers who opted to use the app could be forced to read their results over the phone to state party leaders which is a more time-consuming process. The Iowa Democratic Party reiterated to Bloomberg that any issues with the new app shouldn't affect the outcome of the caucus or the reporting of results. Iowa Caucus leaders have relied on mobile apps to record results before. But the app causing problems is new and completely optional, according to a statement from Mandy McClure, the spokeswoman for the Iowa Democratic party. It tabulates results throughout each phase of the caucus ensuring more accurate reporting from volunteers. The New York Times reported that the app had been "tested and verified" by the Department of Homeland Security and cybersecurity experts before it launched this year. "We knew that technology gave us some opportunities in this process, but with those opportunities came different challenges," said Troy Price, the chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party, told the New York Times late last month. The 2020 Iowa Caucus is also the first time caucus-goers will be provided "paper ballots" or cards for recording their preferred candidate. The cards will be handed in at the end of the night, according to Recode. Charter's mobile service crosses 1M subscriber mark - FierceWireless Posted: 03 Feb 2020 05:38 PM PST ![]() Charter Communications said that its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service reached a total of 1.1 million mobile lines as of December 31, 2019. Charter added 288,000 Spectrum Mobile lines in the fourth quarter, with 948,000 mobile lines added in the full year 2019. The company launched its Spectrum Mobile service in July 2018, and has been adding subscribers at a steady clip. In the third quarter 2019 it added 276,000 mobile lines, up from 208,000 additions in the second quarter 2019. In its fourth quarter, the company's revenue of $11.8 billion grew by 4.7% year-over-year, primarily driven by residential revenue growth of 5.7% and small- medium-business revenue growth of 6.3%. Charter said its Q4 mobile revenue grew $147 million. Charter reinvested all of its mobile revenue for the quarter, saying it spent $151 million on mobile-related capital expenditures during the fourth quarter. For the full year 2019, capital expenditures totaled $7.2 billion, down from $9.1 billion in 2018, and included $432 million of mobile-related CAPEX. The Spectrum Mobile service rides on Verizon's nationwide wireless network. It's available to all new and existing Spectrum Internet customers who can choose an unlimited data plan for $45 a month per line, or by-the-gig at $14/GB. Charter and its cable competitor Comcast are both piling up subs. Comcast added 261,000 wireless subscribers in the fourth quarter, its largest gain yet in a single quarter, and putting it past the 2 million subscriber mark in total wireless customers. "Charter's haul of 288K wireless subscribers in Q4, along with Comcast's record gain reported last week, leaves the cable industry with more than 3 million wireless subscribers," writes MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett. "At an estimated $25-or-so of wholesale revenue per subscriber per month, the cable industry already annualizes to almost $1 billion of high-margin revenue for their MVNO partner." CBRS Charter executives have spoken about their interest in CBRS spectrum. They could build out some wireless infrastructure themselves and use the CBRS spectrum to run it. Chris Winfrey, Charter's CFO, said on last week's earnings call that the company will "likely participate" in the upcoming CBRS auction in June. Charter CEO Tom Rutledge said, "On the wireless situation it's really a math question of what's a cost to pay for your MVNO rate and what's the cost to build? There's no immediate plan to change our fundamental relationship with our carriers. But over time as the market evolves and speeds go up, and capacity goes up, the economics may change, and we'll take advantage of those through time as the marketplace unfolds." RELATED: Charter, Comcast could deploy strand-mounted wireless small cells Moffett said the "dirty little secret" is that by some estimates 10% of cell sites account for as much as 70% of traffic. "By building out facilities in only the densest areas, cable can offload a tremendous amount of traffic from the MVNO contract, dramatically lowering their variable costs with only minimal investment," writes Moffett. "That will then allow for either higher margins or, more likely, lower prices… and therefore even faster growth." Wi-Fi Speaking at a FierceWireless event in November, Charter SVP of wireless technology Craig Cowden said the company is considering using home-based Wi-Fi, that operates similarly to Comcast's Xfinity Wi-Fi product, to help offload more traffic for its Spectrum Mobile service. Cowden said Charter already uses public Wi-Fi hotspots to help offload traffic from Verizon's network. Charter has about the same number of these outdoor hotspots as Comcast. RELATED: Cowden says Charter is looking at more Wi-Fi for wireless offload But Comcast boosts its Xfinity Mobile MVNO offering with millions more of its in-home Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots. "We already offload significant traffic onto Wi-Fi," said Cowden. "Comcast has 19 million hotspots that are called home-as-a-hotspot, using the existing router in the home. We see a benefit of doing that." Posted: 03 Feb 2020 05:20 PM PST Shakira and Jennifer Lopez weren't paid to perform the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show — but their roughly 15-minute set is still paying off. The "two little Latin girls" — as J-Lo dubbed the duo in an Instagram FB, +1.13% post just hours before their showstopping performance aired live on Fox FOX, +1.38% — performed a bilingual medley of 14 of their greatest hits during Sunday night's game, which saw the Kansas City Chiefs rally to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Miami. And with viral moments such as Shakira's meme-orable tongue flicking, J-Lo showing off her "Hustlers" moves while pole-dancing in a sparkling body suit, as well as the nods to the border crisis by showing kids in cages, viewers were still talking about #HalftimeShow2020 and its set list on Twitter TWTR, +1.82% and searching for the performances on Google GOOG, +3.61% well into Monday afternoon. Here it is below: As a result, those collected songs saw a whopping 1,013% sales increase in the U.S. on Sunday, Feb. 2, according to initial Nielsen Music sales data reported by Billboard. The singles sold 16,000 digital downloads all together on Sunday, which was up from a little more than 1,000 collectively on Saturday, Feb. 1. Shakira's gyrations generated the most sales so far, as her 2001 hit "Whenever, Wherever," was the initial best-seller with almost 4,000 sales on Feb. 2, which was a 1,194% increase compared over the day before. That was followed by her 2006 single "Hips Don't Lie" with 2,000 downloads on Sunday (a 1,126% increase from the day before). But J-Lo dominated on Amazon AMZN, -0.23%. A company spokesperson told MarketWatch that Alexa requests for the "Jenny on the Block" singer on Amazon Music rose more than 5x (426%) on game day compared to the previous Sunday, while Alexa requests for Shakira jumped 303%. Streams for J-Lo on Amazon Music also increased 432% on Super Bowl Sunday over the Sunday before, while Shakira's rose 150%. And in the hours after their halftime performance, Spotify SPOT, +3.68% streams of Lopez's music rose by more than 335% and Shakira's music by about 230%, compared to the same window a week ago. Shakira's "Empire" saw the biggest bump, however, with streams increasing 2,135%. While J-Lo commands $2.2 million for each performance on tour, according to Forbes, and Shakira rakes in $1.6 million, the women weren't paid for the show itself (although their expenses and production costs were covered by the NFL.) How to Set SMART Fitness Goals - pittsburghquarterly.com Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:18 PM PST ![]() Question: "I would like to get in better physical shape. I've tried to do this in the past but have always had trouble staying with an exercise program for any length of time. Any suggestions to help me stick with it?" Transforming fitness resolutions into reality will not occur by chance. That is where the importance of setting clear and appropriate goals comes into play. Your short-term fitness goals should define the day-to-day behaviors required to achieve an objective — the long-term goal. Short-term goals chart the course, establish benchmarks to measure progress and provide an opportunity to experience daily successes. Experts agree that SMART goals have the best chance of achieving the desired outcomes. The acronym SMART stands for goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-based. Setting your fitness goalsIt is safe to say that you won't hit the target if you don't have one! It is imperative that you clearly identify the desired outcomes and plan a series of steps that will ultimately lead you there. Consider the following guidelines when formulating your fitness goals: Write it down. Studies show that people who keep written goals have a better chance of achieving them. Written goals become a legitimate contract — with yourself. Be specific. The statement "I want to get in better shape" is a general desire, not a specific goal. A more specific, measurable goal would be "I will exercise a minimum of five days a week for 30 minutes each day." Likewise, the statement "I will perform 3 sets of 30 push-ups every-other day" is much more specific than "I will do push-ups every other day." Setting specific and measurable short-term goals will focus your efforts and provide an opportunity to evaluate progress. Be realistic. While it is essential to establish goals that stretch your physical and mental limits, it is equally important that your goals be attainable. Unrealistic expectations eventually lead to exercise dropout. Prioritize. Decide which aspects of "getting in better shape" are most important to you. Do you want to lose weight? Add muscle? Reshape your body? Prioritizing will enable you to effectively channel your efforts to produce maximum results in the shortest period. Set performance goals. Performance goals spell out what you will do, not necessarily what you will accomplish by doing them. The statement "I will walk two miles every day" is a performance goal within your control. In contrast, the statement "I will drop 15 pounds by my high school reunion next month" is an outcome goal. Goals based purely on outcomes are more vulnerable to failure because of circumstances beyond your control. Set action goals. Your goals should motivate you to action every day. View the completion of each daily goal as one small step taking you closer to your ultimate objective. Monitor progress. Short-term goals provide an ongoing measure of progress toward the realization of long-term goals. If there comes a point when you begin to question the effectiveness of your program, you will be able to look back and compare where you were then to where you are now. Set target dates. Set specific deadlines for the completion of each goal. A target date creates accountability and provides motivation. If you don't achieve the goal by the completion date, simply adjust and keep moving forward. Review and evaluate. Periodically take a step back and assess your progress. You may discover that your goal statements aren't challenging enough, that you are capable of more. On the other hand, if you are having difficulty sticking with the program, then it is possible you've set the bar too high. Make any necessary adjustments and continue moving forward. Experience success dailySetting SMART goals will establish patterns of behavior that can literally shape your physical future. The importance of experiencing success every day, however slight it may be, cannot be overstated. The effects of small successes are cumulative. What you do today, tomorrow and the next day will play a role in how you look and feel two months from now. As you begin to see tangible results, you will become motivated to reach for even greater heights.
