United Way 80% of the way to 2019-2020 campaign goal - WGEM

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 10:06 PM PST

Officials with the United Way of the Mark Twain area said they're on track to meet their goal for their campaign for the 2019-2020 year.

United Way officials recognized volunteers and organizations that help support the United Way's campaign this year at their annual meeting Thursday.

They said they're just over 80% of the way to their goal of $425,000, which will go towards various organizations in the community.

"Hopefully we can power through and get to that goal, because it does do great things in our community and allows agencies to extend hope, which is our theme this year, give hope to those in our surrounding communities," said United Way Campaign Vice President Justin Gibson

United Way officials said organizations that benefit from that include ones like the local YMCA, Douglass Community Services, NECAC, The Salvation Army and many more.

Weinstein's 1st defense witness attacks 'Sopranos' actress, surprised by texts - ABC News

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 09:50 PM PST

The defense's first witness in the Harvey Weinstein rape trial took the stand late on Thursday to challenge actress Annabella Sciorra's account of being raped by the disgraced producer and stumbled through a cross-examination when a series of texts he sent to Weinstein were read aloud in court to the witness' surprise.

Producer Paul Feldsher took the stand and testified that he was friends with both Weinstein and Sciorra, and said that during "an extremely long walk" in New York City in the early 1990s, "I remember Annabella saying to me that she'd done this crazy thing with Harvey."

Feldsher said under direct examination that there was no reason to believe the incident was forced or violent.

"There was no component of what she said that was shocking or alarming. I don't recall it being stressful. I think I would have been a horrible friend … I don't remember having any more conversation with her about it," he said.

Asked by a defense attorney what his understanding "of what this crazy thing was," Feldsher testified that "my understanding was that she fooled around with him."

But on cross-examination, a series of texts from Feldsher to Weinstein read aloud by prosecutor Joan Illuzzi undermined his credibility.

"Your appetites and ambitions for the things you wanted -- a script, a movie and, yes, a girl -- were, to put it mildly, voracious," Feldsher wrote to Weinstein after dozens of sexual misconduct allegations in the fall of 2017 turned Weinstein into a national pariah.

At another point, Feldsher acknowledged texting Weinstein that "Annabella is an a------" and, "I think the dogpile of women who are suddenly recalling repressed memories is hideous."

At one point the exasperated witness blurted out, "Listen, I'm learning a lot now and I had no idea that my text messages would end up in a courtroom."

He also admitted texting Weinstein to say in reference to Sciorra, "Well the rape version got her an agent at CAA, so there's that," and, conversely, that "if a lot of these girls had been my daughter I would have wanted to beat the shit out of you."

Feldsher stumbled through some of his explanations to Illuzzi.

"I was trying, obviously, my daughter's 13 so the thought of anyone in that context I found abhorrent at this point. I guess I was trying to put into context ... I was also trying to be a friend," he said.

Illuzzi asked Feldsher if it was true that "in the middle of telling Harvey Weinstein she's a liar and an a------," he texted Sciorra herself.

Feldsher appeared to acknowledge that he did.

It was not immediately clear from the testimony exactly when Feldsher sent the texts to Weinstein and Sciorra, but their content indicated they were sent after Sciorra's allegations against Weinstein first surfaced in the fall of 2017.

He was asked what he meant when he texted Sciorra, "Bella, Meryl Poster [former president of television at The Weinstein Co.] asked me for your number I should have asked you before I gave it to her. … I'm sorry for a lot of things. Current events are way too much for text but obviously acknowledgment goes to that awfulness."

Feldsher denied the "awfulness" he was referring to was Sciorra's newly surfaced allegation of being raped by Weinstein.

"The awfulness I'm talking about was Annabella was a 58-year-old woman unemployed with twins she couldn't support. I was talking about the circumstances of her life that put her in position where I felt she was making untrue allegations."

Feldsher acknowledged he didn't mean some of the things he said.

"Is it correct to say that you were saying things that you thought Harvey Weinstein wanted to hear?" Illuzzi demanded.

"Um, yes," he replied.

"And that's what you're doing today, aren't you sir?" Illuzzi thundered, marching across the courtroom toward the witness stand. "Aren't you saying things in this court that Harvey Weinstein wants to hear?"

"Categorically, no!" he shot back.

Asked to explain his "dogpile" comment, he insisted, "I meant a plethora not [the] animal."

At one point, Feldsher tried to explain that he wrote what he did to Weinstein out of pity.

"This was somebody I knew who was in trouble," Feldsher said. "I was talking to him partially because nobody else was. I felt badly that he was completely abandoned. I felt badly that it was difficult for him to be the recipient of due process."

Asked when he last met with defense attorneys, Feldsher said he met with them two days ago. Feldsher completed his testimony as court ended for the day.

Wuhan hospital announces death of whistleblower doctor Li Wenliang - CNN

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 09:31 PM PST

Li Wenliang died of the virus in the early hours of Friday morning local time, Wuhan Central Hospital, where he worked, said in a statement. The confirmation follows a series of conflicting statements about his condition from the hospital and Chinese state media outlets.
"Our hospital's ophthalmologist Li Wenliang was unfortunately infected with coronavirus during his work in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic," the hospital said. "He died at 2:58 am on Feb 7 after attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful."
Li was among a number of supposed "rumormongers" detained in December for spreading news about the virus. He had warned about a potential "SARS-like" virus spreading in Wuhan. Nothing Li said was incorrect, but it came as officials in the city were downplaying the severity of the outbreak and its risk to the public.
There were more apparent efforts to control the narrative even after Li's death -- leading to widespread anger.
Earlier on Thursday night, several state media outlets had reported Li's death, following which Chinese social media erupted in mourning. Hours of confusion followed, with Wuhan Central Hospital releasing a statement saying Li was still alive and in critical condition, adding that they were "making attempts to resuscitate him."
State media subsequently deleted their previous tweets, only for the hospital to then confirm his death.
US honeymooners are stuck on coronavirus cruise ship -- and they don't know when they'll get to leave

Wuhan's whistleblower

Li had raised the alarm about the virus that ultimately took his life.
In December, he posted in his medical school alumni group on the Chinese messaging app WeChat that seven patients from a local seafood market had been diagnosed with a SARS-like illness and were quarantined in his hospital in Wuhan.
Soon after he posted the message, Li was accused of rumor-mongering by the Wuhan police.
He was one of several medics targeted by police for trying to blow the whistle on the deadly virus in the early weeks of the outbreak, which has sickened more than 28,000 people and killed more than 560. He later contracted the virus himself.
Li was hospitalized on January 12 and tested positive for the coronavirus on February 1.

Fury on social media

China's social media channels were awash with anger following news of Li's death.
The topics "Wuhan government owes Dr. Li Wenliang an apology," and "We want freedom of speech," soon began to trend on China's Twitter-like platform, Weibo. Each gained tens of thousands of views before disappearing from the heavily censored platform.
Another topic, called "I want freedom of speech," had drawn 1.8 million views as of 5 a.m. Friday morning local time (4 p.m. ET Thursday).
Top comments under the Wuhan Central Hospital's statement about Li's death included "I've learned two words: political rescue & performative rescue" and "Countless young people will mature overnight after today: the world is not as beautiful as we imagined. Are you angry? If any of us here is fortunate enough to speak up for the public in the future, please make sure you remember tonight's anger."
Several comments also marked the timing of the announcement. "I knew you would post this in the middle of the night," wrote one Weibo user.
"You think we've all gone to sleep? No. We haven't," said another.

Confusion over his condition

The Global Times first announced Li had died in a tweet at around 10:40 p.m. local time Thursday, linking to a report that cited friends and doctors at Wuhan Central Hospital.
It deleted the post several hours later. Other Chinese media outlets also deleted their reports of his death, without explanation. The World Health Organization released a message of condolence following the initial reports that Li was dead but later updated their statement to say they did not have any information about the doctor's status.
Wuhan Central Hospital issued a new statement confirming his death later that day.
The death toll and number of people infected by the Wuhan coronavirus continues to grow, with no signs of slowing despite severe quarantine and population control methods put in place in central China.
The number of confirmed cases globally stood at 28,275 as of Thursday, with more than 28,000 of those in China. The number of cases in China grew by 3,694, or 15%, on the previous day. There have been 565 deaths so far, all but two of which were in China, with one in the Philippines and one in Hong Kong.

This is a live blog. Please check back for updates.

All times below are in Beijing time.

11:43 am: Trump says he is confident of China's 'strength and resilience'

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke on the phone Friday morning Beijing time.

"President Trump expressed confidence in China's strength and resilience in confronting the challenge of the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak," said White House spokesperson Judd Deere in a tweet.

The two leaders talked about the spread of the virus, and Xi said China is doing all it can to fight the outbreak, according to the state-owned broadcaster CCTV.

"(Xi said) we have full confidence and full ability to overcome the epidemic. The long-term good prospects of China's economic development will not change," the report said, according to a CNBC translation of the Chinese text. — Cheng, Tan

10:55 am: Japan's Abe wants government to pull out all stops to limit economic impact

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has reportedly called on his government to take "all necessary steps" in order to limit the economic impact of the virus outbreak. That could include dipping into budget reserves, Reuters said.

"There's a risk the coronavirus outbreak could hurt consumption, so we need to watch developments carefully," Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura was quoted as saying on Friday, reported Reuters citing Jiji Press.

Japan, which is preparing to host the 2020 Summer Olympics in July and August, is also concerned about the impact on inbound tourism, the report said.

9:42 am: 41 new cases from Diamond Princess cruise ship docked in Japan

An additional 41 people on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which arrived at the Japanese port of Yokohama earlier this week, have tested positive.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases from the cruise ship to 61, said Japan's health ministry.

About 3,700 passengers and crew were placed under mandatory quarantine for two weeks after 10 people aboard the cruise liner tested positive. — Tan

9:22 am: Newborn in China becomes youngest case

A baby in Wuhan, who was born on Saturday, tested positive for the virus 36 hours after he was delivered, the Associated Press reported. Authorities said he was the youngest person known to be infected with the new coronavirus, according to the report.

"The baby was immediately separated from the mother after the birth and has been under artificial feeding. There was no close contact with the parents, yet it was diagnosed with the disease," Zeng Lingkong, director of neonatal diseases at Wuhan Children's Hospital, told Chinese TV.

It was not clear how the child got infected, AP said. — Tan

9:08 am: Moody's warns that Australian universities could be hit harder than their global peers

Moody's Investors Service said Australia's universities could face more immediate credit risks compared to their global peers, as travel restrictions on Chinese citizens will impact international enrolments and exchange programs.

Chinese students make up about 60% of the international students at Australia's top universities, and international students account for about 33% of the total student intake Down Under, the report said.

"While the impact will remain manageable if the coronavirus is contained within the next few months, a longer outbreak has the potential to materially dent revenue and cash reserves for Australian universities," according to Moody's. — Tan

8:40 am: Chinese social media erupts with condolences and anger over whistleblower doctor's death

On Friday morning, the two most popular hashtags on Weibo, China's version of Twitter, were about the death of Dr. Li Wenliang, the doctor who was reprimanded by the government when he first sounded the alarm on the coronavirus.

Users of WeChat, China's ubiquitous messaging app, also poured out condolences in their "moments" feed, which is akin to Facebook's news feed.

The comments ranged from respect and sadness over the loss of a "hero," to references of "Do you hear the People Sing" from Les Misérables and a remark from Li to Caixin news that, "A healthy society should not only have one voice." — Cheng

NEW YORK – Rookie Kieffer Bellows scored his first two NHL goals to help the New York Islanders rally for a 5-3 win over the last-place Kings on Thursday night.

Anders Lee had a goal and an assist, and Michael Dal Colle and Matt Martin also scored as the Islanders recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the second period to get their third win in five games (3-0-2). Derick Brassard had two assists and Thomas Greiss stopped 22 shots.

New York, splitting home games between the Nassau Coliseum and Barclays Center, improved to 6-0-3 in Brooklyn.

Ben Hutton had a goal and an assist, and Alex Iafallo and Trevor Lewis also scored for Los Angeles, which is last in the Western Conference and has lost eight of nine (1-7-1). Jonathan Quick finished with 28 saves and to fall to 1-9-1 in his last 11 starts.

Martin tied the score at 3 just 23 seconds into the third as he backhanded the rebound of Devon Toews' shot from the left point past Quick for his fourth.

Bellows, who scored his first NHL goal earlier in the game, gave the Islanders their first lead of the night as he scored on a sharp angle from the left side along the boards near the goal line with 7:50 left.

Lee capped the scoring as he hustled down the ice to knock in an empty-netter with 13 seconds left for his 17th.

Trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes, the Islanders pulled within one just 1:40 into the second as Johnny Boychuk's one-timer from the right point went in off Dal Colle's skate.

Lewis restored the Kings' two-goal lead 5 1/2 minutes later as he redirected Michael Amadio's shot in front past Greiss for his third.

Bellows, who had an assist in his NHL debut two nights earlier, pulled the Islanders to 3-2 as he converted a pass from Anthony Beauvillier past Quick from the left side with 9:38 left.

Hutton got the Kings on the scoreboard just past the midpoint of the opening period. Trailing the play, the defenseman got a pass from Adrian Kempe in the right slot and beat Greiss on the glove side for his third with 9:40 left. It came on Los Angeles' fourth shot on goal of the game.

Iafallo doubled the Kings' lead exactly 7 minutes later on their sixth shot. With the Islanders possessing the puck in their defensive zone, Iafallo stole the puck skated to his left and fired a shot that went in on Greiss' glove side for his 15th.

Chinese Doctor Who Raised Alert on Coronavirus Has Died, While The Outbreak Continues - ScienceAlert

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 07:31 PM PST

A Chinese doctor, among the first to raise the alert about China's new coronavirus, himself died from the pathogen on Friday, emphasizing the depth of a worsening crisis that has killed more than 560 people.

Global panic also spread, with thousands trapped on quarantined cruise ships.

Ophthalmologist Li Wenliang died at 2:58 am, Wuhan Central Hospital said in a post on its verified account on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

The 34-year-old sent out a message about the new coronavirus to colleagues on December 30, but was later among eight whistleblowers summoned by police for "rumour-mongering."

He later contracted the disease while treating a patient and has been hailed as a hero by Chinese internet users.

Li was among more than 28,000 people who have been infected in China, where authorities are struggling to contain the outbreak, despite ordering millions indoors in a growing number of cities.

Two dozen countries have confirmed cases of the respiratory disease, which emerged from a market selling exotic animals in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.

Thousands of holidaymakers on cruise ships in Hong Kong and Japan face an agonising wait to find out if more among them have been infected.

At least 20 people on the Diamond Princess - off Yokohama since Monday - have tested positive. Some 3,700 passengers and crew from more than 50 countries have been confined to quarters.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said another cruise ship, the Westerdam, was heading to the country with one confirmed case.

He said no foreigners from the vessel, capable of carrying nearly 3,000 passengers and crew, would be allowed to disembark.

In Hong Kong, 3,600 people were spending a second night confined aboard the World Dream. Authorities conducted health checks after eight former passengers tested positive for the virus.

Hong Kong has been particularly nervous because the crisis revived memories of another coronavirus that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). It killed nearly 300 people in the city and another 349 on the Chinese mainland in 2002-2003.

Panic buying in semi-autonomous Hong Kong left supermarkets empty of toilet paper following false online claims of shortages, prompting authorities to appeal for calm.

One person has died after contracting the virus in Hong Kong.

While the death toll rises in China with the death of Li and others, experts have stressed that at two percent mortality, 2019-nCoV is far less deadly than SARS, which killed around 10 percent of the people it infected 17 years ago.

The outbreak has nevertheless been declared a global health emergency, prompting several governments to warn against travel to China and ban arrivals from the country, while airlines have halted flights and brought home their citizens.

Almost 200 Canadians showed up at the airport in Wuhan for the country's first evacuations, most on a commercial airliner chartered by Ottawa, officials said.

Germany's foreign ministry said it was working to bring home several nationals who had not made it out on a flight that reached Frankfurt last Saturday.

Saudi Arabia banned citizens and resident foreigners from travelling to China, while Air France-KLM extended its flight suspension by another month until March 15.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in a call that all countries should "follow World Health Organization guidelines on travel and health in a timely manner", state news agency Xinhua reported.

After Britain advised nationals to leave China, Beijing's ambassador to London said there should not be "such a panic."

Short of medical staff

China has enacted unprecedented measures to contain the virus, which spread during the Lunar New Year holiday in late January, when millions criss-crossed the country.

But deaths and new infections continue to rise, especially at the epicentre in Hubei province, where 18 cities housing 56 million people have been under virtual lockdown since late last month.

There is a shortage of 2,250 medical personnel in Hubei, deputy provincial governor Yang Yunyan said Thursday. The inability to offer health workers adequate protective gear is hindering the numbers that can be deployed on the front lines, he added.

With Hubei's capital Wuhan overwhelmed, authorities were due to open a second, 1,600-bed field hospital.

The first, with 1,000 beds, opened earlier this week, and authorities said they were converting public buildings into temporary medical facilities.

The central government has announced measures intended to ensure the supply of vital resources, with tax breaks for manufacturers of medical equipment.

"We must make all-out efforts across the country to meet the need for essential medical supplies and medical professionals in Hubei province," Premier Li Keqiang said, according to Xinhua.

BGI Group, a genome sequencing company in southern China, said it had opened a lab in Wuhan able to test 10,000 people a day.

Don't go out

More cities are ordering people to stay indoors.

They include Hangzhou, 175 kilometres (110 miles) from Shanghai, where fences block streets and loudspeakers tell people: "Don't go out!"

In Beijing - where streets remain eerily quiet - restaurants have been barred from accepting reservations for parties.

And in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi province which borders Hubei, pharmacists must send reports to the authorities on anyone buying fever or cough medicine.

The outbreak has also hit major businesses.

Workers making iPhones at tech giant Foxconn's plant in Henan province, bordering Hubei, will be quarantined for up to two weeks, the company said.

China said it would halve tariffs on US$75 billion worth of US imports, as part of a trade truce with Washington and as officials look to calm markets unnerved by the outbreak.

Talking cat asks owner 'Are you coming?' in viral TikTok video - Fox News

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 07:23 PM PST

The only thing better than a sassy cat is a talking sassy cat.

TikTok video purporting to show a cat asking its owner, "Are you coming?" has gone viral, and admittedly it's hard to believe.

'WORLD'S WORST CAT' GETS ADOPTED AFTER VIRAL AD

TikTok user and cat owner Ike Tommy got quite the surprise as he was recording his pet kitty in the bathroom. In the video, the cat appears to meow as she waits for her owner to return to the other room.

In what sounds exactly like a human person, the cat apparently asks Tommy if he's coming. The occurrence is so shocking, Tommy walks over to the feline to get a better view on the camera.

"What did you just say?" Tommy asked the cat.

Unsurprisingly the video went viral and has been viewed 1.8 million times on TikTok.

TikTokers couldn't get enough of the talking cat video, which has also garnered nearly 19,000 comments.

"And this is a proof that animals can talk," a TikTok user commented.

THE WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW: WHAT'S THE WINNINGEST BREED IN THE EVENT'S HISTORY?

"She tried playing it off with a meow," another person wrote.

One TikTok user said, "THAT'S SO SCARY BUT CUTE," while another wrote, "Lmao. She even looked like she was busted. Broke cat code."

Some users said they thought it was a baby talking before they realized the words were actually coming from the kitten. Others who own cats said they could attest to the fact that cats can indeed talk like humans.

"Dude, I swear cats CAN talk if they WANT to! My cat would say/howl "Noo, Noo, Noo!" during bathtime and other phrases too at different times," one person commented.

Another TikTok user offered maybe a more rational explanation for what transpired. "Cats actually do mimic our voices to communicate with us," a TikTok user wrote.

Coronavirus: The hit to the global economy will be worse than SARS - CNBC

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 06:31 PM PST

The new coronavirus outbreak will be worse for the global economy than the 2003 SARS epidemic was, data analysis firm IHS Markit predicts.

While both outbreaks originated in China, nearly two decades separate the SARS outbreak from the new coronavirus outbreak. In that time, China has grown from the world's sixth-largest economy to the second biggest today behind the U.S. The country has been a main growth driver worldwide, with the International Monetary Fund estimating that China alone accounted for 39% of global economic expansion in 2019.

"Coronavirus will have a larger negative effect on the global economy than the SARS outbreak in 2003," IHS Markit wrote, adding that China accounted for 4.2% of the global economy in 2003. The report says China now commands 16.3% of the world's GDP. "Therefore, any slowdown in the Chinese economy sends not ripples but waves across the globe."

SARS, which stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome, first emerged in China's Guangdong province before spreading to other countries. The virus infected about 8,000 people, claimed almost 800 lives worldwide and shaved 0.5% to 1% off China's growth in 2003, according to various estimates.

Though estimates vary, economists say that the SARS outbreak in China cost the global economy about $40 billion.

Most of the economic cost of the outbreak, though, "is not related to the virus," said CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council Gloria Guevara, who was the tourism minister for Mexico during the H1N1 outbreak. "It's related to the panic."

The long-term economic impact of the new coronavirus outbreak will be determined largely by China's containment measures, IHS Markit's report says. The Chinese government has quarantined Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, and, by IHS Markit's count, 11 provinces have extended the Chinese New Year holiday to keep workers at home and prevent the spread of the virus.

"If the current and unprecedented confinement measures in China stay in place until the end of February, and are lifted progressively beginning in March, the resulting economic impact will be concentrated in the first half of 2020," the report says, "with a reduction of global real GDP of 0.8% in Q1 and 0.5% in Q2."

If China ends those restrictions on Feb. 10, as is currently scheduled, the impact on the global economy will be much more limited, the report says. Most factories in China would be closed around this time for observance of the Chinese New Year, which is factored into expectations. However, the report says the outbreak threatens to severely hamper several industries, especially automotive manufacturing.

"The 11 Chinese provinces which have announced an extended holiday period are normally responsible for over two thirds of vehicle production in China," the report says.

Employees with Ford Motor and Fiat Chrysler who are able to do so are working from home this week, while production at both automakers' plants is scheduled to remain closed until at least next week, the companies confirmed to CNBC this week. Tesla has temporarily closed its stores in mainland China as of Sunday, Feb. 2, according to an online post from a company sales employee on that date.

General Motors, the largest U.S. automaker in China, last week told employees there that it will keep its Chinese factories shut down through Feb. 9

The uncertainty in China could also hamper global oil prices, the report says, adding that China accounted for half of the world's oil demand growth in 2019. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and some allies have been holding talks this week to respond to the outbreak.

T-Mobile continues to rack up customers - CNET

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 05:33 PM PST

As T-Mobile waits to hear whether it'll be able to consummate its marriage with Sprint, the company is still racking up new customers. T-Mobile also beat analysts' expectations for revenue and profit when it reported quarterly earnings Thursday.

The third-largest U.S. wireless carrier by subscribers said it added 1 million new postpaid customers, or customers who pay their bills at the end of the month. Such customers are considered valuable in the wireless industry. The figure was in line with estimates from research firm FactSet.

As for the financials, T-Mobile exceeded expectations. The company reported net income of $751 million, up from $640 million a year earlier. Excluding items, T-Mobile earned 87 cents per share, which beat analyst expectations of 83 cents. The company's revenue also increased to $11.88 billion, from $11.45 billion. This also beat analysts' average estimates.

T-Mobile's deal to acquire Sprint has been in a holding pattern for most of the past two years as it awaits a court decision after several states sued to stop the merger. The two companies delivered closing arguments last month. A decision is expected this month.

T-Mobile's strong growth is in stark contrast to that of Sprint, which has been limping along, losing customers and generating less revenue than analysts had expected. During the fourth quarter, Sprint reported it had 115,000 postpaid phone subscribers.

T-Mobile's subscriber growth in the fourth quarter is also outpacing that of rivals AT&T and Verizon. Last week, AT&T said it had added 229,000 postpaid mobile phone subscribers during the fourth quarter. Verizon added 790,000 new postpaid phone subscribers in the fourth quarter.

Though T-Mobile says there's likely to be more competitive pressure from cable providers like Comcast and Charter offering wireless service, it foresees subscriber growth continuing, with an expectation to add 2.6 million to 3.6 million customers for all of 2020. This would likely outpace AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile added a total of 4.5 million customers for all of 2019.

As for the deal with Sprint, T-Mobile CEO John Legere said he's confident the judge in New York federal court will approve the merger. When asked on the call with investors whether T-Mobile and Sprint might consider a spectrum-sharing arrangement if the deal were to fall through, Legere said he'd make two points: "One is the deal will be approved. Point No. 2: The deal will be approved."

That said, he conceded that if by some chance the deal falls apart, there are a "myriad of things that Sprint and [T-Mobile] could consider doing" to get some of the benefits they'd gain if they merged. But he added confidently, "The deal will be approved."

T-Mobile execs also teased another Un-carrier announcement that it expects to make in the coming weeks. Legere didn't offer details but said an announcement was coming this quarter.

Coronavirus Whistleblower Dies From The Disease In China - NPR

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 05:31 PM PST

Coronavirus patients settle down in a large temporary hospital built two days ago in an exhibition center in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province. At another area hospital, a doctor who gave an early warning on social media about the virus has died. Barcroft Media/Getty Images hide caption

A Chinese doctor who was among the first to blow the whistle on the new coronavirus has died from the disease, the hospital treating him said on social media early Friday local time.

Li Wenliang, 34, an ophthalmologist based in Wuhan, was reprimanded in early January by local police authorities for "publishing falsehoods" after he mentioned in a WeChat group seven cases of a virus similar to SARS from a seafood market.

News of Li's death has triggered millions of reactions on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter. Most posts mourned him, called him a hero and commented with candle emojis, some with mourning poems. When Li was in critical condition late Thursday and early Friday local time, millions of people flocked to a livestream operated by local media outside the hospital, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Among the outpouring of grief, some asked for accountability and transparency surrounding his treatment and the larger picture of authorities' response to the virus.

The topics "Wuhan government owes Dr. Li Wenliang an apology" and "We want freedom of speech" soon began to trend on Weibo, before being deleted, CNN reported.

In a now-deleted interview with Beijing Youth Daily in late January, Li said that the report on SARS is not entirely accurate, although he didn't mean to be misleading. He also didn't mean to spread the information widely.

But he was trying to warn his old classmates, many of whom were practicing clinicians. He said he was later infected after treating a female patient with "unknown pneumonia."

On his personal Weibo account one week before he died, Li recounted his journey from seeing the coronavirus test result, to being reprimanded by the authorities for disrupting the social order, to being hospitalized.

"I was hospitalized on the 12th. At that time, I was still wondering, 'Why is there no announcement of people-to-people transmission, and why are no medical workers getting infected?'" he wrote.

He was diagnosed with coronavirus the next day. "The dust is settled now."

Li's death has prompted condolences from state media, including the People's Daily and the Global Times.

Li leaves behind one child and his wife, who is pregnant.

Jesus Ferreira - in action - tight shot - FC Dallas - March 23, 2019

FC Dallas youngster Jesus Ferreira continues to make waves ahead of the start of the 2020 MLS season.

Coming off a strong shift in his debut with the US men's national team in a 1-0 friendly win over Costa Rica on Saturday, the 19-year-old was back at it in FCD's preseason scrimmage against LAFC on Thursday, cashing home an amazing finish in the second period for his side's first goal of the match. With FCD trailing 1-0, Ferreira collected a feed from a teammate and set himself up with a volley from outside the penalty area and displayed some impressive composure in lashing it home to level the match.

It's quite the highlight. Check it out below.

Producer Bashes 'Liar' Actress and Defends 'Sex Addict' Pal Weinstein in Court - The Daily Beast

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:50 PM PST

Harvey Weinstein's legal team kicked off their defense on Thursday, calling former talent agent Paul Feldsher to testify about his close relationship with Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra.

Sciorra alleges Weinstein raped her in 1993 and 1994—a claim Feldsher said was not as visibly traumatic as she claimed on the witness stand. Recalling a conversation with Sciorra in the 1990s, he said the actress admitted she'd "done this crazy thing with Harvey."

"As I understand it all these years later, there was nothing that she told me that was shocking or alarming, there was nothing stressful," Feldsher said, adding that he would not have been such a "passive friend" not to follow up if Weinstein had done something. "My understanding was that she fooled around with him."

During cross-examination, Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi grilled Feldsher, a producer of several Miramax films, on his frequent communication with Weinstein over the past two years. He sent Weinstein emails about his unwavering "loyalty," referring to Sciorra as an "asshole" and "liar" whose "rape version got her an agent at CAA."

"I am loyal to you Harvey I will always have your back if you call on me. Honoring our agreement helps me know that you've got mine," Feldsher wrote in one text message. In another, he wrote: "I gotta tell you unless you make some sort of confession or you are proven legally guilty, I will continue to be the controversial cum inappropriate person who defends you."

"If a lot of those girls had been my daughter I would have wanted to beat the shit out of you," he wrote in a third message.

Felder admitted during cross-examination that he had discussed his testimony with Weinstein and he had "no idea" his text messages would end up in the courtroom. He described Weinstein as having a "voracious appetite" for sex. "It was my understanding that Harvey had a sex addiction for a long time," he said.

As the prosecution's first witness, Sciorra emotionally recounted to jurors how Weinstein allegedly showed up at her door after dinner, forced himself inside her 17th-floor apartment and raped her in the 1990s.

Weinstein, 67, faces five charges, including predatory sexual assault and first-degree rape, for assaulting two women who testified: Miriam Haleyi and Jessica Mann.

The prosecution rested its case on Thursday after calling 27 witnesses over two weeks—including six women who graphically detailed their alleged sexual assaults. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty.

Don't let the goal total distract you from the fact that Charlie McAvoy is doing his job - 98.5 The Sports Hub

OTTAWA, ON - NOVEMBER 27: Charlie McAvoy #73 of the Boston Bruins looks on in a game against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on November 27, 2019 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Jana Chytilova/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images)

By Ty Anderson, 985TheSportsHub.com

When it came to Charlie McAvoy and his 55-game goal drought, I had convinced myself that he was either going to remain cursed forever and finish the year without a goal to his name or he was going to score the biggest goal possible to finally break through. In my head, that 'biggest goal' was, like, the winner in a division clincher against the Lightning or an overtime goal in the playoffs.

Now, not sure you'd consider an overtime winner over the Blackhawks as 'big,' but McAvoy will certainly take it.

As will his teammates, who by all means refused to let McAvoy get up from the ice in celebration, knowing what it meant to McAvoy to finally get on the board with goal No. 1.

"I know just from talking with [McAvoy] he was getting a little anxious about [not scoring]," Bruins defenseman Torey Krug told reporters after the win in Chicago. "That's natural and to be expected, but he hasn't let it affect what he does for us the rest of the way as far as being a great defenseman for this team and shutting down other teams' top lines and moving the puck and doing everything else well."

That last point from Krug is key, really. In other words: Don't let this meager goal total distract you from the fact that McAvoy, who skated in the 169th game of his NHL career last night, is already playing like exactly what the Bruins need on their backend.

And then some.

Among the group of 84 NHL defensemen to play at least 800 minutes of five-on-five hockey this season, McAvoy is currently surrendering the 10th-fewest on-ice scoring chances against per 60 minutes, at 23.29. This is the best mark among all Boston defensemen (Brandon Carlo is 20th, at 23.93). McAvoy is also averaging the 22nd-fewest high-danger scoring chances against per 60 minutes, at 9.55. That's third on the Bruins, behind Brandon Carlo (sixth-fewest in the NHL) and Zdeno Chara (12th-fewest in the NHL).

On the ice for 47 goals for and 38 goals against at five-on-five, McAvoy's plus-9 goal differential makes his goals-for percentage 55.29%. That's the 15th-best in the NHL. Some names around him in that stat include Seth Jones (13th), Aaron Ekblad (14th), Alex Pietrangelo (16th). Norris runaway John Carlson, meanwhile, is 9th in this stat (57.89%).

McAvoy's most favorable stat, however, comes in the high-danger realm. On the ice for 29 high-danger goals for, and just 19 against, McAvoy's 60% high-danger goals-for percentage is the 8th-best in the NHL. Only Zach Werenski, Victor Hedman, Roman Josi, Kevin Shattenkirk, Seth Jones, John Marino, and Carlo have stronger percentages here.

In terms of raw differentials, the Bruins are outshooting opponents 522-478 (plus-44), out-chancing teams 453-378 (plus-75), and besting them in high-danger scoring chances 185-155 (plus-30) with McAvoy on the ice for five-on-five action.

Bruins netminders are also posting a .921 save percentage when McAvoy is on the ice.

Moving beyond percentages and pure analytics, McAvoy has drawn 15 penalties at five-on-five (most among that group of 84), and his 90 blocked shots are the third-most. He also has 29 takeaways (sixth-most), and his 98 hits are the ninth-most. Break it down per 60 and McAvoy is dishing out the 10th-most hits per 60 (6.04), and blocking the fourth-most shots per 60 (5.54).

He's become a more complete defenseman, and while this may not be what the Bruins wanted out of McAvoy's third full season in the NHL (they wanted more of an offensive leap), there's no denying the idea that they have a top pairing ace.

So while goals are nice, these strengths should be enough if the rest of the Boston roster is doing their job.

If they get both like they have over these last two games, however, then the rest of the league should be put on notice.

Here are some other thoughts and notes from a 2-1 win over the 'Hawks....

Jonathan Toews says referees admit they screwed up on Chicago's would-be game-winning goal

Let's be real: The Blackhawks were screwed out of what should've probably been the game-winning goal with 1:05 remaining in the third period of a tied game. With a loose puck just ahead of a tumbling Olli Maatta, the Chicago defenseman fell to the ice, pushed the puck with his hands, but then appeared to get his stick on a puck sent Drake Caggiula's way.

Caggiula corralled the puck and fired it through Halak, and the Blackhawks jumped ahead in what was a must-win for them.

Goal or no goal? https://t.co/dMESFxq2d0

But the referees quickly shook their heads and decided that Maatta's pass was all hand and no stick.

Speaking with reporters after the loss, Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews says that the officials told him that they screwed it up on the call, and that the could should have counted for Chicago, who are currently three points out of a wild card spot.

"They made a mistake, blew the whistle," Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton said. "Not much you can say after that. It's done."

If you're a Bruins fan, you don't care. You don't care about the Blackhawks' feelings or their playoff race. You've also been on the wrong end of about a billion terrible calls over the last year plus. Like everyone has. But hey, just a reminder that this could not be reviewed, but potentially millimeter-off zone entires scored 45 seconds before a goal are fair game. Woof.

Kuraly-Coyle-Bjork line developing some chemistry together

It's been two games since Sean Kuraly rejoined the Boston lineup -- and to the left of a third line with Charlie Coyle and Anders Bjork -- and two games with the Coyle line looking straight-up fantastic for the Bruins. Together for both Tuesday night against the Canucks and Wednesday against the Blackhawks, the line has been together for just under 18 minutes of five-on-five play, and have outshot the opposition 16-6, and outscored them 2-0 after Kuraly's game-tying goal last night.

Kuraly's long-term fit for the Bruins is probably still in the middle of Boston's tone-setting fourth line between Joakim Nordstrom and Chris Wagner, but this trio continues to make Bruce Cassidy think about what he may have here.

The Bruins are in on everybody

If you caught last night's game on the NBC Sports Network broadcast, you got the privilege of hearing TSN's Bob McKenzie talk about the Bruins and their trade deadline aspirations. The Bobfather didn't exactly shock you, but the message seemed simple enough: The Bruins are in on everybody. Chris Kreider. Tyler Toffoli. Even the Jackets' Josh Anderson.

They're trying to see what's out there, and what the prices will be.

It's no surprise that Kreider is the top prize (it's believed that the Rangers want a comparable or better return than the one they got for Kevin Hayes last year), while Toffoli might be the next-best option for teams like the Bruins. The Anderson note is interesting, too, as McKenzie noted that while the Blue Jackets aren't eager to move Anderson, they are listening. Anderson, who has one goal and four points in an injury-interrupted 26-game year for Columbus, is a pending restricted free agent.

T-Mobile Stock Rises After It Beats Earnings and Revenue Estimates - Barron's

T-Mobile US ' business continued to perform well in the fourth quarter as it waits for a ruling on its long-sought merger with Sprint. The wireless operator reported earnings and revenue on Thursday evening that both beat analysts' estimates. Shares rose in after-hours trading.

T-Mobile (ticker: TMUS) reported 87 cents in earnings per share in the fourth quarter—up 16% from a year ago and ahead of the Wall Street consensus estimate of 83 cents per share. Sales in the period were $11.9 billion, up 4% and slightly above the $11.8 billion that analysts had expected.

Adjusted Ebitda, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, reached $3.2 billion, up 9% from the same period last year and ahead of the analyst consensus estimate of $3.1 billion. T-Mobile's free cash flow jumped 15% from a year ago to $1.4 billion in the fourth quarter—its highest level ever.

In 2020, T-Mobile sees $13.7 billion to $14.0 billion in adjusted Ebitda and $5.4 billion to $5.8 billion in free cash flow. Those figures were $13.4 billion and $4.3 billion, respectively, in 2019. The company also expects to take $200 million to $300 million in merger-related costs in the first quarter.

"Our results continue to show that the Un-carrier strategy works, and it delivers for both customers and shareholders," CEO John Legere said in a statement. "I couldn't be more confident and excited about our future and We Won't Stop!"

Nonetheless, T-Mobile sees its subscriber growth slowing in 2020. After adding 4.5 million postpaid subscribers last year, it expects to add 2.6 million to 3.6 million next year.

T-Mobile had preannounced its fourth-quarter subscriber numbers on Jan. 7. Its postpaid subscriber growth—referring to customers who receive a monthly bill, a closely watched metric for wireless companies—reached 1.3 million in the quarter, the company's 27th consecutive quarter above a million. Wall Street analysts had been expecting 1.1 million net new postpaid subscribers. T-Mobile also added 77,000 prepaid subscribers in the period and ended 2019 with a total subscriber base 86 million strong.

T-Mobile has been the U.S. wireless industry's best performer in recent years, chipping away at its larger rivals with its "un-carrier" strategy. It's taken market share thanks to lower prices and improving network quality.

In spring 2018, T-Mobile bid to acquire its smaller rival Sprint (S). The combination of the third and fourth-largest players in the U.S. mobile phone business—after Verizon Communications (VZ) and AT&T (T)—is meant to lead to greater scale, new wireless spectrum holdings, and cost synergies that will put the new T-Mobile in a stronger position for the 5G era.

Despite federal regulators' support for the deal, a coalition of state attorneys general took the companies to court to block the merger. They argue that it would reduce competition and lead to higher prices for consumers. A judge's decision could come in the next month.

Barron's recently called T-Mobile stock a winner no matter which way the merger ruling falls. Should the deal fail, T-Mobile's business remains solid and it can resume share buybacks, boosting its stock price. Either way, removing long-lasting deal uncertainty is a positive catalyst for the stock, which has stumbled in recent months.

Wall Street analysts are bullish on the stock: Eighty percent have a Buy or equivalent rating, while 20% recommend a Hold. No analyst rates T-Mobile a Sell. Their average target price is $92.43, about 12% above its $82.77 closing price on Thursday.

T-Mobile shares were up 0.3%, at $83.00, in after-hours trading.
