‘Superstore’ Actress Lauren Ash Reacts To America Ferrera Exit: “It’s Heartbreaking” - Deadline Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:09 PM PST Superstore actress Lauren Ash shared a tribute to America Ferrera, after the series star and executive producer announced she is leaving the NBC comedy after five seasons. Ash, who plays Dina on the series alongside Ferrera's Amy, said the cast has developed a strong bond over the years. "The cast started this journey as strangers and quickly became family. The idea that one of our family members isn't going to be around anymore after 5 years, well, that's tough for me to accept," Ash wrote on Instagram Friday, shortly after Ferrera's surprise announcement that she will not be returning next season. "The thing is, as Dina and Amy's friendship grew, so did Lauren and America's. It's not gonna be the same without her," Ash added. "But, Superstore has always done an amazing job of reflecting real life situations and challenges. And these kinds of things are a part of life. People we love have to move away or move on all the time. And it sucks. And it's heartbreaking. But it's a real part of life."
The announcement of Ferrera's exit came two weeks after the series, from creator Justin Spitzer and Universal Television, was renewed for a sixth season. The show's current season wraps on April 16. In addition to starring and executive producing, Ferrera also directed four episodes of the single-camera comedy. A TikTok of a girl getting an abortion went viral and sparked a massive debate - Insider - INSIDER Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:47 PM PST
A viral TikTok video showing a teenage girl getting an abortion set off a fiery debate over abortion rights and how it was regarded on social media. User @cpcake21 posted the 20-second clip, which begins with an apparently positive pregnancy test belonging to her friend, Ashley. The girl shows off her stomach before the video follows them to a Planned Parenthood clinic, where they point out a solemn couple in the waiting room before cutting to Ashley on the table in a medical gown. The video, which was posted from a now-private profile but posted in some tweets, is overall lighthearted. Set to a remix of Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain," Ashley nervously laughs and fist pumps before she's in the exam room. —Austere Revered Wizard Will 🧙♂️ (@prophetw205) February 28, 2020 The video has no noticeable optics of the procedure or graphic footage, but its casual tone set off a bitter debate across social media on both sides of the abortion-rights spectrum. Conservative figures latched onto the video, calling it a distasteful take on a serious issue. Charlie Kirk, the president and founder of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, wrote on Twitter that the video was "sick & depraved," and blamed "the left." —Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) February 27, 2020 The video also caught the eye of Lila Rose, who currently serves as president of Live Action, a pro-life group that regularly posts anti-abortion content on TikTok. Rose slammed the video in one tweet as a show of "cruelty." In a later tweet, she urged her followers to pray for the girl shown in the video and against pro-choice policies. —Lila Rose (@LilaGraceRose) February 27, 2020 Abortion is a popular topic on TikTok, with videos under the #abortion and #prolife tags racking up more than 70 million views each, likely because the platform offers a wide array of ways users can comment their opinions on the matter. Some videos are similarly humorous takes on teenage girls going to Planned Parenthood for the procedures. One is set to one of the platform's popular sounds that begins with horn music before audio can be heard saying "a child...no." In addition to first-person takes on abortion experiences, there is a wide variety of video formats that creators use to voice their political opinions on abortion, from illustrating generational clashes to celebrating pro-life milestones like the annual March for Life. Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:37 PM PST NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Larry Kudlow, the president's chief economic adviser, stood in the White House briefing room on Friday urging the public — and the plunging financial markets — not to panic over the coronavirus outbreak, while Vice President Mike Pence spread a similar message to officials and residents at an event in Florida. Later, as the authorities revealed a second person in California had been found to be infected with the coronavirus without having any known risk factors, President Trump suggested the panic over the issue was being manufactured by his enemies. In South Carolina on Friday night at his latest freestyle "Keep America Great" rally, the president accused Democrats of treating alarm over the coronavirus as "their new hoax," and said the news media was in "hysteria mode" over his administration's handling of the outbreak, continuing an attempt to shift blame for a public health crisis onto his political adversaries. "Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus," Mr. Trump told a crowd of supporters, who roared in response. "They can't even count their votes in Iowa." "We have 15 people" with the virus "in this massive country, and because of the fact that we went early," referring to an earlier decision to close American borders to travelers from China, "we could've had a lot more than that." The president added that "so far, we have lost nobody" to the coronavirus. "It doesn't mean we won't," he said. (By late Friday, two more unexplained cases of the coronavirus had been confirmed in the West, one in Oregon and one in Washington State.) Mr. Trump, who overnighted this week in India and who, according to his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, has barely slept since, spent nearly 90 minutes mixing his views about the coronavirus with insults about the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates. He also sprinkled in free-associative rants about his popularity with black voters and topics further afield. The president at different points mused about the Rev. Al Sharpton's weight — "He looked better when he was heavy" — and the Academy Awards — "Seriously, the Academy Awards has gone way, way down in ratings. You know why? Because they started attacking us, and we don't believe in it anymore. That's why." But he always found his way back to partisan politics. "On Jan. 31, I ordered the suspension of foreign nationals who have recently been in China from entering the United States," Mr. Trump said to loud cheers about his decision to seal the borders to travelers, "an action which the Democrats loudly criticized and protested, and now everybody's complimenting me." Experts have questioned the effectiveness of border closures and quarantines when so much about the coronavirus is unknown. Yet Mr. Trump appeared to tie his administration's response with his case for tighter immigration policies: "We must understand that border security is also health security." In recent days, the president has appeared more interested in his prospects for re-election than in conducting a measured response to a public health crisis. On Friday morning, Fox News — usually a reliable ally — drew Mr. Trump's ire for releasing polling that showed him faltering in matchups against potential rivals in November. "Worst Polls, just like in 2016 when they were so far off the mark, are the @FoxNews Polls," Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter. "Why doesn't Fox finally get a competent Polling Company?" (At the rally, he remarked that the unnamed Fox pollster "hates Trump's guts.") The Keep America Great rally in South Carolina, a state that Mr. Trump won handily in 2016, was intended to draw attention away from the Democratic primary, scheduled for Saturday. With both of the state's Republican senators, Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, in tow, the president became the latest national politician to visit a state that has been overwhelmed by them. Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and the billionaire businessman Tom Steyer, both running for the Democratic presidential nomination, are betting that South Carolina will revive their flagging campaigns, and the president had words for them. "I thought I knew all the wealthy people," he said of Mr. Steyer, whom he mocked as "Mr. Impeachment." He then teased Mr. Biden for mixing up the names of states he has visited. "He did that like seven times," Mr. Trump said. "If I did that once, it would be the end of the road, right?" he added. "They'd say Trump has lost it." He paused before saying, "They like to say that anyway, I guess." Mr. Trump poll-tested various candidates with the crowd — "We won't include Steyer, he's a loser" — before disparaging Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts as a "mean one" and dismissing Michael R. Bloomberg as "gone" and Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota as "not going to happen." The president then asked his supporters who they thought was the weaker candidate, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont or Mr. Biden. "Who the hell is easier to beat? Crazy Bernie? Or Sleepy Joe?" he said, before concluding that his best chances lie with Mr. Sanders. Among other topics, Mr. Trump assessed his own effectiveness with minority voters, regaling the crowd with a story about a "love fest" event at the White House at which he hosted African-Americans. His campaign recently announced a push to open storefronts in swing states targeting black voters with "Woke"-themed merchandise and pamphlets. "One of the things I asked them," Mr. Trump said, "I've been thinking about this for a long time — great people, some of them are here tonight — 'Do you like the name African-American or black?' And they said, 'Black!' all at the same time. True. I tell you. Because you say African-American or black. And they said almost, like, immediately, 'Black.'" On and off the rally stage, the president has zeroed in on Mr. Bloomberg for his performances in recent debates. Earlier Friday, Mr. Trump spread an unfounded Twitter rumor that Mr. Bloomberg was thinking of ending his presidential bid. "Shouldn't you be worrying about the coronavirus?" Mr. Bloomberg replied on Twitter. "Listen to your scientists. Prepare your people. Be the leader America needs. If only just this once." The South Carolina rally was just the latest stop on Mr. Trump's grievance roadshow. He has visited every state that has held a primary or caucus so far this year, making trolling Democratic candidates a cornerstone of his re-election campaign strategy. Democrats say that this penchant to chase them around the map is evidence that Mr. Trump is not confident about his chances. But Erin Cassese, a political science researcher at the University of Delaware who studies the psychology of voters, said that the president was capitalizing on the anger felt by Republican voters who have been bombarded with messaging they do not necessarily agree with. "There's how much you like your own party and then there's almost how much you dislike the opposing party," Ms. Cassese said. "I see Trump as riding the wave of negative partisanship by following Democrats through these early primary states. And the rally is kind of a pressure valve." At the rally, Mr. Trump summoned Mr. Graham, a fervent defender of the president's, onstage for a round of praise. "Do you know why you're going to win?" the senator asked Mr. Trump. "You've been a damn good president." Mr. Graham then thanked the president for putting up with what the senator described as never-ending obstacles, though Mr. Graham used an expletive instead. Later, as Mr. Trump spoke about immigration, he celebrated a federal appeals court ruling that determined that his administration would not have to provide funding to so-called sanctuary cities, and he recounted in grisly detail stories of an undocumented immigrant who had been arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. He said the man was also a member of the MS-13 gang, a vicious criminal organization. "He should never have been in our country," Mr. Trump said as the crowd roared and started a "Build the Wall" chant. "He should not have been allowed." Petry's goal in OT leads Canadiens past Hurricanes 4-3 - USA TODAY Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:27 PM PST MONTREAL (AP) — Jeff Petry scored 52 seconds into overtime, lifting the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. Phillip Danault, Max Domi and Brendan Gallagher scored in regulation for the Canadiens, who snapped a two-game skid despite giving up a 3-0 lead. Tomas Tatar had two assists. "We haven't been good with leads," Gallagher said. "We have to work through this and learn to play with the lead." It was the fifth consecutive home game in which the Canadiens failed to protect a multigoal cushion, and are 1-2-2 in those games. "We were better tonight," Gallagher said. "We were more aggressive. But at the same time, three pucks still end up in the back of our net. You have a two-goal lead or a three-goal lead, they need to be locked down." Charlie Lindgren made 27 saves in his first start since Feb. 4, when he won 5-4 in a shootout in New Jersey. Carey Price got the night off after playing 11 consecutive games. "Lindgren played a good game," coach Claude Julien said. "There was a lot of traffic in front of him on their goals. He made some big saves, especially in the dying seconds. "I'm pretty sure you're going to see him again. The goal is not to ride Price into the ground. The goal, as you saw tonight, is to give Charlie the opportunity to play here. And if he plays well, why not?" Haydn Fleury, Joel Edmundson and Justin Williams scored for the Hurricanes, who forced overtime after being down 3-0. "We can't chase games," Williams said. "Chase and chase and chase. It's exhausting. Our urgency from the start of the game just has to be better. It's just a mental thing. "Sometimes maybe you have to trick your mind to think you're down a goal to start the game." Carolina's goaltending troubles continued with both James Reimer (lower body) and Petr Mrazek (concussion) injured last week in Toronto. Backup Anton Forsberg, who also played Friday, allowed three goals on 20 shots before being pulled in the second period. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 18 of 19 saves in relief. The only goal Nedeljkovic let in was to Petry in overtime on a breakaway. The Canadiens had blown two-goal leads in their previous four home games (0-2-2), and they again didn't make it easy on Bell Centre fans. "It would definitely be a much different feeling in here if we were to lose in overtime, especially with the lead that late in the game," said Petry, who scored his 10th of the year. "It's a sense of relief to get the win. But we have to figure out a way to end it in regulation. We have to have that killer instinct, that mentality." Edmundson made it 3-2 at 1:14 of the third when his wrist shot from the blue line soared into the top corner of the net. Andrei Svechnikov was screening Lindgren on the play. After a back-and-forth third, Williams tied it for Carolina with 1:17 remaining by deflecting Edmundson's point shot. The Canadiens were leading 8-0 in shots when Danault completed a nice passing play from linemates Tatar and Gallagher to slide the puck five-hole on Forsberg. With the assist, Tatar set a career high with 59 points. Montreal started the second period with similar energy to the first and scored twice within 17 seconds to take a 3-0 lead. Domi capitalized on a scramble in front of Forsberg for his fourth goal in as many games at 3:46. With fans still cheering for Domi's goal, Gallagher fired a one-timer on a rebound from Tatar at 4:03 to end Forsberg's night. The Hurricanes got one back when Fleury threw a puck on net from the point that found its way through a couple of bodies and under Lindgren's glove at 7:45. With Williams in the penalty box for slashing, Lindgren denied Vincent Trocheck on the short-handed breakaway with five minutes left in the second. NOTES: The Hurricanes are one point behind Columbus for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. ... Montreal improved to 14-16-6 at home this year. ... Empty streets, economic turmoil as virus alters daily life - News 12 Brooklyn Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:37 PM PST By DAVID KLEPPER and MARI YAMAGUCHI TOKYO (AP) - The coronavirus has claimed its first victim in the United States as the number of cases shot up in Iran, Italy and South Korea and the spreading outbreak shook the global economy. Governments stepped up efforts to contain the disease. Saudi Arabia closed Islam's holiest sites to foreign pilgrims. In Japan, professional baseball teams played in deserted stadiums. The French government advised the public to forgo customary greeting kisses. Ireland and Ecuador among the countries reporting their first cases Saturday. More than 85,000 people worldwide have contracted the virus, with deaths topping 2,900. China recorded 573 new virus cases and 35 more deaths in the 24 hours through midnight Saturday, according to the National Health Commission. That raised the total for the country where the disease emerged in December to 2,870 deaths and 79,834 cases. In the United States, a man in his 50s in suburban Seattle became the first coronavirus death on U.S. soil. Officials say they aren't sure how the man acquired the virus because he had not traveled to any affected areas. "Additional cases in the United States are likely, but healthy individuals should be able to fully recover," President Donald Trump said. Officials announced heightened warnings about travel to certain regions of Italy and South Korea as well as a ban on travel to Iran. Many cases of the virus have been relatively mild, and some of those infected are believed to show no symptoms at all. But that can allow for easier spread, and concern is mounting that prolonged quarantines, supply chain disruptions and a sharp reduction in tourism and business travel could weaken the global economy or even cause a recession. South Korea, the second hardest hit country after China, reported 376 new cases on Sunday morning, raising its total to 3,526. Most of the cases in South Korea have been reported in the southeastern city of Daegu and nearby towns. Italian authorities say the country now has more than 1,100 coronavirus cases, with 29 deaths so far. Iran is preparing for the possibility of "tens of thousands" of people getting tested for the virus as the number of confirmed cases spiked again Saturday, an official said. So far, the virus and the COVID-19 illness it causes have killed 43 people out of 593 confirmed cases in Iran. Researchers reported the death rate may be lower than initially feared as more mild cases are counted. A study by Chinese researchers published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine analyzing 1,099 patients at more than 500 hospitals throughout China calculated a death rate of 1.4%, substantially lower than earlier studies that focused on patients in the central city of Wuhan, where it started and has been most severe. Assuming there are many more cases with no or very mild symptoms, "the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%," U.S. health officials wrote in an editorial in the journal. That would make the new virus more like a severe seasonal flu than a disease similar to its genetic cousins SARS, severe acute respiratory syndrome, or MERS, Middle East respiratory syndrome. Also Saturday, a survey of Chinese manufacturers showed activity plunged in February by a wider margin than anticipated, adding to the virus's mounting economic toll. The monthly purchasing managers' index issued by the Chinese statistics agency and an industry group fell to 35.7 from January's 50 on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 indicate activity contracting. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced a 270 billion yen ($2.5 billion) emergency economic package to help fight the virus. Abe said at a news conference that Japan is at critical juncture to determine whether the country can keep the outbreak under control ahead of the Tokyo summer Olympics. Abe, who earlier announced plans to close all schools for more than a month through the end of the Japanese academic year sparked public criticism, said the package includes financial support for families and their employers affected by the closures. "Frankly speaking, this battle cannot be won solely by the efforts of the government," Abe said. "We cannot do it without understanding and cooperation from every one of you, including medical institutions, families, companies and local governments." Even in isolated, sanctions-hit North Korea, leader Kim Jong Un called for stronger anti-virus efforts to guard against COVID-19, saying there will be "serious consequences" if the illness spreads to the country. In other areas caught up in the outbreak, eerie scenes met those who ventured outside. Streets were deserted in the city of Sapporo on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido, where a state of emergency was issued until mid-March. Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan announced they would close, and big events were canceled, including a concert series by the K-pop group BTS. In France, the archbishop of Paris advised parish priests not to administer communion by placing the sacramental bread in worshippers' mouths. Instead, priests were told to place the bread in their hands. The French government cancelled large indoor events. Saudi Arabia closed off Islam's holiest sites in Mecca and Medina to foreign pilgrims, disrupting travel for thousands of Muslims already headed to the kingdom and potentially affecting plans later this year for millions more ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan and the annual hajj pilgrimage. Tourist arrivals in Thailand are down 50% compared with a year ago. In Italy, which has the most reported cases of any country outside of Asia, hotel bookings are falling. Premier Giuseppe Conte raised the specter of recession. The head of the World Health Organization on Friday announced that the risk of the virus spreading worldwide was "very high." U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the "window of opportunity" for containing the virus was narrowing. Economists have forecast global growth will slip to 2.4% this year, the slowest since the Great Recession in 2009, and down from earlier expectations closer to 3%. For the United States, estimates are falling to as low as 1.7% growth this year, down from 2.3% in 2019. Despite anxieties about a wider outbreak in the U.S., Trump has defended measures taken and lashed out at Democrats who have questioned his handling of the threat. Trump has accused Democrats of "politicizing" the coronavirus threat and boasted about preventive steps he's ordered in an attempt to keep the virus from spreading across the United States. ___ Klepper reported from Providence, R.I. Watch: Walker Zimmerman scores first goal in Nashville SC franchise history - MLSsoccer.com Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:27 PM PST Walker Zimmerman provided a moment Nashville SC fans will remember forever in the club's inaugural MLS match against Atlanta United at Nissan Stadium, scoring the first-ever goal in club history in the 28th minute. Nashville were down 1-0 after an early goal from Atlanta's Ezequiel Barco, but Zimmerman would find the leveler off a free kick from Hany Mukhtar, which the defender headed down into the box before snapping the finish past goalkeeper Brad Guzan and providing an epic moment for the raucous home crowd. Check it out below. That type of play is exactly why Nashville brought in Zimmerman via a trade with LAFC during the offseason. In his first game with his new team, the big center back already has his place in club lore. MLS PREDICT 6: Easy to play. Easy to win. AP FACT CHECK: Trump's viral spin on virus; Dem oversteps - The Columbian Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:47 PM PST WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has not proved to be the bearer of reliable information when calamity threatens and people want straight answers about it. That's happening again as he addresses the prospect of a coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. With numbers still low, but the first death in the U.S. now reported, the infectious disease risks not only public health but the economy he holds up to voters for his reelection. To date, his comments have largely seemed intended to put a positive spin on hard information from the scientists, as if he were wishing the problem away. Trump's comment Friday night, characterizing Democratic criticism of the administration's response to the virus as a "hoax," lent weight to the perception that he's minimizing the potential for harm in search of political gain. He emphasized Saturday that he does not consider the coronavirus threat a hoax — only the pushback from Democrats. Trump has a record of unreliability on this front. In one hurricane episode, he displayed a map doctored to reflect his personal and ill-founded theory that Alabama would take it on the chin. In another, he dismissed the Puerto Rico death toll as a concoction by Democrats. He was fast off the mark to describe the injuries suffered by U.S. service members from an Iranian missile attack as little more than headaches, when it turned out scores suffered traumatic brain injury. For their part, Democrats have been quick to criticize the Trump administration — at times too quick. Several presidential candidates described the federal response as hampered by Trump budget cuts, which have not happened, and by a decimated public-health bureaucracy, despite the top-of-class scientists steering the effort. Here are the facts behind some of the political rhetoric of the past week, on the virus and more. VIRUS OUTBREAK TRUMP: "We are rapidly developing a vaccine. … The vaccine is coming along well, and in speaking to the doctors, we think this is something that we can develop very rapidly." — news conference Wednesday. THE FACTS: No vaccine is imminent for the coronavirus. A candidate vaccine for the virus causing COVID-19 is approaching first-step safety tests, but federal experts say anything widely usable is probably more than a year away. "We can't rely on a vaccine over the next several months," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health. — — — TRUMP: "The level of death with Ebola — you know, at the time, it was a virtual 100%. … There's a very good chance you're not going to die. It's very much the opposite. You're talking about 1 or 2%, whereas in the other case, it was a virtual 100%. Now they have it; they have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we're very close to a vaccine." — news conference Tuesday in New Delhi. THE FACTS: "Close" is not correct. A vaccine has already been developed for Ebola. The FDA approved an Ebola vaccine in December. Even before its U.S. approval, it was being used in Congo to help stem the current outbreak. — — — TRUMP, on U.S. coronavirus cases: "We're going down, not up. We're going very substantially down, not up." — news conference Wednesday. THE FACTS: That was false assurance. He was referring to the fact that most of the people he cited as having COVID-19 in the U.S. are getting better. But that is not indicative of the spread or containment of the disease since most victims, by far, recover. Cases in the U.S. are almost certain to increase, his own officials have said repeatedly, and he acknowledged as much Saturday. — — — TRUMP: "The flu in our country kills from 25,000 people to 69,000 people a year; that was shocking to me. And so far, if you look at what we have with the 15 people, and they are recovering." THE FACTS: His remarks on the coronavirus risks are misleading. Scientists don't know enough about how deadly the new virus actually is, and so far it hasn't infected nearly as many people as the flu. Of the cases cited by Trump, they are not "all recovering." One died and four others are "very ill," he said Saturday. Flu deaths fluctuate depending on which strain is circulating and how well each year's vaccine is working, but Trump's cited range is in the ballpark. Two flu seasons ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there were 80,000 U.S. deaths, the highest death toll in at least four decades. This year's flu season isn't as deadly; so far this season, the CDC estimates there have been 16,000 to 41,000 deaths from the flu. As to COVID-19, an illness characterized by fever and coughing and in serious cases shortness of breath or pneumonia, there are now at least 60 cases in the U.S. In addition to the ones Trump cited, 45 were among groups the U.S. government evacuated and quarantined either from China or the Diamond Princess cruise ship. In the hardest-hit part of China, the death rate from the new coronavirus was between 2% and 4%, while in other parts of China it was 0.7%. In contrast, the death rate from seasonal flu on average is about 0.1%, said Fauci, of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. That's far lower than what has been calculated so far for COVID-19. But millions of people get the flu every year around the world, leading to a global annual death toll in the hundreds of thousands. — — — MIKE BLOOMBERG: "There's nobody here to figure out what the hell we should be doing. And he's defunded — he's defunded Centers for Disease Control, CDC, so we don't have the organization we need. This is a very serious thing." — Democratic presidential debate Tuesday. JOE BIDEN, comparing the Obama-Biden administration with now: "We increased the budget of the CDC. We increased the NIH budget. … He's wiped all that out. … He cut the funding for the entire effort." THE FACTS: They're both wrong to say the agencies have seen their money cut. Bloomberg is repeating the false allegation in a new ad that states the U.S. is unprepared for the virus because of "reckless cuts" to the CDC. Trump's budgets have proposed cuts to public health, only to be overruled by Congress, where there's strong bipartisan support for agencies such as the CDC and NIH. Instead, financing has increased. Indeed, the money that government disease detectives first tapped to fight the latest outbreak was a congressional fund created for health emergencies. Some public health experts say a bigger concern than White House budgets is the steady erosion of a CDC grant program for state and local public health emergency preparedness — the front lines in detecting and battling new disease. But that decline was set in motion by a congressional budget measure that predates Trump. The broader point about there being "nobody here" to coordinate the response sells short what's in place to handle an outbreak. The public health system has a playbook to follow for pandemic preparation — regardless of who's president or whether specific instructions are coming from the White House. Public-health experts outside government have praised the CDC's work so far and noted that its top scientific ranks have remained stable during the past three years. — — — HEALTH CARE BERNIE SANDERS: "What every study out there — conservative or progressive — says, 'Medicare for All' will save money." — Democratic debate. THE FACTS: Not true. Some studies say that, some don't. Sanders, a Vermont senator, cites a recent medical journal article in The Lancet, which estimated "Medicare for All" would save more than $450 billion annually, or about 13%. But other studies have found a Sanders-like single-payer plan would cost more, partly because free health care would increase the demand for services. A study last fall from the Commonwealth Fund and the Urban Institute estimated that such a plan would increase national health spending by about $720 billion. A Rand study estimated spending would increase 1.8% under a national single-payer plan. — — — GUN CONTROL JOE BIDEN: "A hundred and fifty million people have been killed since 2007, when Bernie voted to exempt the gun manufacturers from liability." — Democratic debate. THE FACTS: Biden vastly overstated gun deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports about 413,000 gun deaths from 2007 to 2018, a far cry from 150 million, which equates to close to half the U.S. population. More than half of the gun deaths in 2018 were from suicide, says the CDC. His campaign acknowledged he misspoke. — — — AMY KLOBUCHAR: "I am the author of the bill to close the boyfriend loophole that says that domestic abusers can't go out and get an AK-47." BIDEN: "I wrote that law." KLOBUCHAR: "You didn't write that bill, I wrote that bill." BIDEN: "I wrote the bill, the Violence Against Women Act, that took (guns) out of the hands of people who abused their wife." KLOUBCHAR: "OK we'll have a fact check look at this." — Democratic debate. BIDEN: "No, let's look at the fact check. The only thing (is) that that boyfriend loophole was not covered, I couldn't get that covered. You, in fact, as a senator tried to get it covered and Mitch McConnell is holding it up on his desk right now." THE FACTS: Klobuchar, a Minnesota senator, correctly called out the former vice president for seeming to take credit for legislation closing the "boyfriend loophole." Biden conceded the point, then correctly pointed out that the loophole has not been eliminated in law. In short, Biden did write the legislation that became the Violence Against Women Act, one of his most prominent achievements. The 1994 law sets out services and specific protections for victims of domestic violence. Klobuchar took the lead in the Senate on legislation passed by the House that would extend the law's protections to help women who are threatened by abusive partners who are not a spouse, ex-spouse or parent of a common child — in other words, boyfriends or dating partners. But that effort, opposed by the National Rifle Association, has been hung up in the Senate. — — — WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE BLOOMBERG, responding to Elizabeth Warren's demand that he lift non-disclosure agreements for all women who signed them: "We are doing that, senator." — Democratic debate. THE FACTS: He hasn't done that. Bloomberg agreed to release three women from non-disclosure agreements in situations where they specifically identified an issue with him. But many more former Bloomberg employees have signed such agreements, having to do with the culture and work environment at his company. He hasn't freed them from their obligation to stay quiet about their complaints. — — — WARREN: "At least I didn't have a boss who said to me 'kill it' the way that Mayor Bloomberg is alleged to have said to one of his pregnant employees." BLOOMBERG: "I never said that." — Democratic debate. THE FACTS: The woman who made the allegation against Bloomberg recounted it in a legal filing. Former Bloomberg employee Sekiko Sekai Garrison, 55, filed a complaint against Bloomberg and his company with the New York Division of Human Rights in 1995. In Garrison's written complaint, she recounted several personal interactions with Bloomberg when she worked at the company. In one incident, Garrison said Bloomberg approached her near the office coffee machines and asked if she was still married, according to the complaint. Garrison says she responded that her marriage was great and that she was pregnant with her first child, and alleged that Bloomberg replied: "Kill it." Bloomberg has denied that the exchange happened, but in her complaint, she transcribed a voicemail she says Bloomberg later left on her voicemail, apologizing and saying he meant the "kill it" remark as a joke. Her complaint was eventually settled as part of a lawsuit with no admission of guilt, and she resigned from the company. — — — INDIA TRUMP: "Now, India has more people than any country, a little bit more than China." — news conference Tuesday in New Delhi. THE FACTS: He's getting ahead of population projections. India is projected to overtake China as the world's most populous country around 2027, according to the U.N.'s World Population Prospects report. — — — TRUMP, on India's leader, Narendra Modi: "Under Prime Minister Modi, for the first time in history, every village in India now has access to electricity." — rally Monday in Ahmedabad, India. THE FACTS: That's false. The Indian government says a village is considered electrified if at least 10% of homes and public buildings have electricity. According to the World Bank, about 99 million people, or 7% of India's population, still live in the dark. — — — TRUMP: "Six hundred million more people have access to basic sanitation." — rally Monday. THE FACTS: It's true that India has built more than 110 million new toilets since Modi's government came to power in 2014, leading to increased access to basic sanitation. But implementation has been spotty in a country where venturing into the fields to defecate has been widespread and accepted. More than 60% of India's 1.3 billion people live in more than 600,000 villages. Poor villagers who couldn't build toilets in their homes chose open fields, forests, ditches and other open spaces for defecation — and that cultural practice has been slow to change. A 2018 study conducted by the non-profit Research Institute for Compassionate Economics, for instance, found 44% of the rural population across four large states still defecate in the open. Nearly one-quarter of people in households with toilets also continued to defecate in the open, a figure unchanged from 2014, according to the study. After becoming India's prime minister, Modi promised to make India free of open defecation. He's acknowledged the task is not over. The World Bank previously said about 1 in every 10 deaths in India is linked to poor sanitation. — — — CHINA BLOOMBERG, on China's president, Xi Jinping: "In terms of whether he's a dictator, he does serve at the behest of the Politburo, their group of people. There's no question he has an enormous amount of power. But he does play to his constituency." — Democratic debate. THE FACTS: He's minimizing Xi's broad powers in China. Xi serves as the head of the ruling Communist Party's Politburo Standing Committee and is also head of state and leader of the party's military wing, the People's Liberation Army. The Politburo and its standing committee aren't generally viewed as a check on his power. Although Xi's moves to accumulate power have been criticized by some non-party intellectuals, he faces no clear rivals or constraints on his power. However, a faltering economy and the knock-on effects of the coronavirus outbreak that originated in China are seen as placing him under greater pressure than he has previously faced. — — — Associated Press writers Lauran Neergaard, Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar and Matthew Daly in Washington, Alexandra Jaffe in Charleston, South Carolina, Amanda Seitz in Chicago, and Emily Schmall in New Delhi contributed to this report. — — — EDITOR'S NOTE — A look at the veracity of claims by political figures. The Hornets currently sit in the relegation zone but are a point from safety with Aston Villa - who are 17th - in the Carabao Cup final this weekend. "First and foremost, I want us to play as well as we can play, that's really what it's about. "We don't like losing any game but we know we are certainly going to have to be at our best to give ourselves an opportunity in this game for sure. "Free hit? We're in the Premier League and we want to stay here and so if you go into games writing off a number of games because you're playing against the top sides then you limit your opportunities. Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:57 PM PST WEST SPRINGFIELD — As Greenfield's Jacob Bryant carried the puck down the left side of South Hadley's defensive zone, Aidan Roache slowly glided toward the Tigers' net from the opposite side. It was late in the third period, the Green Wave were on a power play for the rest of regulation and the game was tied. As a South Hadley defender stepped up to defend Bryant, he slid the puck over to Roache who was sitting near the far side post. Bryant scored off a one timer to give the Green Wave the lead with 1:11 to go in the game. South Hadley pulled it's goalie, Anthony Cigal, to get an extra skater on the ice in a last-ditch effort to equalize, but No. 1 Greenfield scored an empty-net goal and went on to defeat the No. 5 Tigers, 4-2, in the Western Massachusetts Division IIIA semifinals in West Springfield on Saturday. Greenfield advances to the Western Mass. Div. IIIA championship and will play No. 3 Wahconah on Mar. 5 at Olympia Ice Center. The Green Wave jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but South Hadley responded with back to back goals, one in the first period and another in the second period. "We have been trying to talk to these student-athletes all year-long about adversity," Greenfield coach Adam Bouchard said. "All the credit to these young men that skated hard out there. They skated for 45 full minutes. They were able to dig deep." Sam Knight opened the scoring for the Green Wave less than two minutes into the game. Knight used his stick skills to get around a South Hadley defender and scored from the right side of the goal inside the far post. Three minutes later, Bryant forced a turnover at South Hadley's blue line and scored from the low slot to double up on the Tigers. Greenfield continued to create scoring opportunities with an aggressive forecheck in the first period, but Anthony Cigal made multiple big saves to keep the Tigers in the game. "Anthony has been so strong all year," South Hadley coach Larry Camus said. "I made him a captain halfway though the season and he has excelled." Joe Cigal got the Tigers on the board with 7:09 left in the opening period with a wrist shot from the low slot. Less than a minute into the second period, the Tigers' Mike Mazza scored to tie the game. "I know for a fact a lot of our student-athletes said 'Oh, we just got up 2-0 real quick, we can let off the gas pedal a little bit'," Bouchard said. "That's when South Hadley started to pick it up. They really took it to us." South Hadley had a two-minute power play opportunity midway through the period, but Greenfield's PK unit kept the Tigers off the board. Mazza had a breakaway with less than a minute to go in the period, but Greenfield goalie Riley Drew made the stop. "In the second period I thought we took control," South Hadley coach Larry Camus said. Tension was high moving into the final period. Both teams had power play opportunities in the frame and both sides had goals waved off. South Hadley had a goal from Mazza waved off because the net was dislodged. A goal off a redirect from Greenfield was disallowed because of a high stick. The Tigers' Matt Brunelle was assessed a penalty for tripping with 1:42 to go in the game to give the Green Wave a power play for the remainder of regulation. Thirty seconds later, Roache slammed in the game-winner. "The really important part of that is that Rocahe was in the right seam," Bouchard said. "Bryant was able to pick his head up and find him there. ... That is a big power play goal, obviously for him, but more importantly for our program." The Green Wave's Portor Clancey scored an empty-net goal with under five seconds left to seal the Greenfield victory. Mazza was South Hadley's only senior this season. He came into Saturday's game with just over 100 career points for the Tigers. "He's been a great leader," Camus said. Moving forward into Thursday's sectional championship game against Wahconah, Greenfield will look to carry over some momentum from Saturday night's win. "When you have a late winner like that you have to take it right to the beginning of the next game," Roache said. Coronavirus live updates: China reports 573 new cases - CNBC Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:37 PM PST This is a live blog. Please check back for updates. All times below are in Beijing time.
8 am: China reports 573 new coronavirus casesMainland China reported 573 new, confirmed coronavirus cases on Feb. 29, up from 427 on the previous day, the country's health authority said on Sunday. The number of deaths stood at 35, down from 47 on the previous day, bringing the total death toll in mainland China to 2,870. Of the deaths, 34 were in Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak. That province also saw 570 of the new cases. —Reuters 5:20 am: Coronavirus could turn US presidential campaign upside downShould the virus continue to spread, it may become impossible for the Democratic presidential campaigns in the United States to avoid changing their event schedules. As companies cancel events and limit travel in the name of caution, candidates are taking a risk by carrying on as normal. "I think we'll see, pretty soon, decisions by the campaigns to limit rope line and scale back events to small-town halls and use technology like streaming to reach voters," said Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration under Trump. Is brash Luis Amarilla the finisher for goal-starved Minnesota United? - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:57 PM PST When Minnesota United, which scored just 11 goals in its final 11 games last season, went looking for more goals, it found Paraguayan striker Luis Amarilla in an Ecuadorian playoff game that coach Adrian Heath scouted to see someone else. After United signed Amarilla in January, he declared he'll score 25 goals in MLS this season. Ike Opara, a United veteran who's not easily impressed, is impressed. "You know, Luis — I love the guy," the 2019 MLS Defender of the Year said. Opara likes Amarilla's audacity, loves his ability to finish at the goal. That's a quality the Loons lacked last season, when it all too often couldn't score in the field's final third. "You rarely see it right off the bat," Opara said, "but in the first 10 minutes of shooting drills, I'm like, 'This guy is legit.' And I rarely say that about anybody because you want to give them time to settle in. But, man, I tell you what: If we can create chances for him, he'll finish them. He's that good of a finisher." Amarilla scored 19 goals in 24 games during a breakout season last year in Ecuador's top division. He impressed Heath with his work rate and his movement inside the penalty area. Heath was surprised when Amarilla told him he'll score 25 goals this season. That would have been fourth in MLS last season, behind only LAFC's Carlos Vela (34), L.A. Galaxy's Zlatan Ibrahimovic (30) and Atlanta's Josef Martinez (27). If he reaches 25 in a season that starts Sunday in Portland, that's almost half the number the Loons scored all last season. "It's a goal that one sets for themselves," Amarilla said in Spanish through an interpreter. "I know that if I achieve it or not, I will continue trying. Obviously, they are elevated numbers, but I am capable of achieving it. Surely with the help of my teammates, it can be achieved." He scored three goals in his first two halves played during the preseason. He also impressed his new teammates with his willingness and ability to defend all over the field. "I've been trying to improve my game, because nowadays a player has to be complete, well-rounded," Amarilla said. "I try to look at other players like [Barcelona striker] Luis Suarez, like many forwards who have also helped defensively. My game comes from observing other players." Opara acknowledged Amarilla's scoring so far is only preseason, against varying competition, played with tired legs on both sides after two practices a day. "But at the end of the day, he was putting the ball in the back of the net, and that's important," Opara said. "He got chances, he scored them. If we can create chances with the games coming up, I like his chances for success." Amarilla scored twice — one a penalty kick earned by teammate Robin Lod's run with the ball in the box — in his first half against MLS competition Feb. 16 against New England in Portland. "Yes, I was surprised," he said, "but I intended to score goals." Heath praised Amarilla's confidence but questioned his math. "The only thing I do know, 25 is going to be a tall order," Heath said. "I told him that. But if we can create for him, he's going to score goals. He has really good movement. He has a really good appreciation where everybody is around him in the penalty area. More importantly, he always knows where the goalkeeper is. If we can get him enough balls in the box, he'll score goals. "But 25? We'll see. He'll probably be MVP of the league if he gets 25, which would be nice." Given the chance to revise his 25-goal prediction, Amarilla politely declined. "No, I would like to stick with that," he said. "But if it can be surpassed, it's welcomed." The Football World Reacts To Jordan Flores’ ‘Goal Of The Century’ - Pundit Arena Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:27 PM PST On Friday night, Dundalk midfielder Jordan Flores scored one of the finest goals the League of Ireland has ever seen in the Lilywhites' defeat to Shamrock Rovers. Flores met Michael Duffy's picture-perfect corner kick with a ridiculous volley as he whipped the ball into the top corner and past the helpless Alan Mannus in the Shamrock Rovers net. Dundalk lost the game 3-2 due to an excellent 83rd-minute goal from Jack Byrne. But Flores strike almost immediately went viral with RTÉ Soccer's original clip garnering three million views on Twitter.
FIFA's official Twitter account shared the volley and claimed it to be "potential candidate" for the prestigious Puskas Award – given to the year's best goal. The likes of Mundial Magazine, Goal and Spanish publication AS all also shared the clip, with the latter crowning it the Puskas Award winner for 2020 already.
Sky Sports News called it a "wonder-volley" and featured it on their bulletins on Saturday morning, saying that: "It's the kind of volley Zinedine Zidane would have been proud of."
Flores joined Dundalk last season from Championship side Wigan Athletic, following loan spells with Blackpool, Chesterfield and Ostersunds in Sweden. The 24-year-old's former club Wigan also took the time to share the clip of the goal from their Twitter account, praising their academy graduate.
The goal also made waves in America, coming in at number three on ESPN's top ten plays of the day. While their Sportscenter affiliate show tweeted footage of the volley.
Flores' finish was also admired by former and current players alike. Former Germany and Liverpool Didi Hamann midfielder claimed the volley to be the 'goal of the century'
Jack Byrne's winning goal may be overshadowed thanks to Flores' effort. However, he took the time to praise the Dundalk midfielder when speaking to RTÉ Sport following Friday's game. "I played with Jordan at Wigan and I know how good he is. He's an unbelievable footballer, so I was seeing trouble when the ball dropped to him at the edge of the box. "I can't say much about the strike; we couldn't have done much about it. It was just one of those things."
